Abstract
BACKGROUND Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, extensive testing was undertaken by independent clinical laboratories (ICLs), yet limited research exists on this matter. Drawing from Green Cross Laboratories (GC Labs)' pandemic response experience, this study seeks to offer insights for preparation for the next pandemic. METHODS This retrospective study analyzed the outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (SARS-CoV-2 rRT PCR) tests administered by GC Labs for COVID-19 diagnosis, upon request by different organizations, between February 2020 and April 2022. The distribution of institutions that requested the tests, the type of tests, and the positive rate were analyzed. We investigated resource allocation details. RESULTS ICLs were responsible for conducting 85.6% of all tests carried out under South Korea's COVID-19 testing policy during the pandemic. The availability of free testing regardless of symptoms led to a significant increase in the use of pooled tests, which accounted for more than 80% of all tests conducted after August 2021. The gender and age distribution of COVID-19 cases nationwide and GC Labs' positive cases were similar. When we analyzed the positive rate by requesting organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite an overall nationwide positivity rate of 35%, high-risk facilities exhibited a positivity rate of less than 5% by maintaining preemptive testing. The most notable increase in resources during the pandemic was seen in human resource input. CONCLUSIONS South Korea's ICLs were able to conduct large volumes of testing during the COVID-19 pandemic because of their logistics and computer systems, scalable testing space, and trained testing personnel. They also had the flexibility to bring in additional resources to expand testing capacity because they are specialized testing organizations. Hence, ICLs could execute the pooled test that the government had introduced for extensive general population screening. The preemptive periodic testing of high-risk populations kept the positive rate much lower than in the general population. This study's findings will aid in refining mass testing-based policies for the next pandemic.

Abstract
Aberrant fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) activation/expression is a common feature in lung cancer (LC). In this study, we evaluated the antitumor activity of and the mechanisms underlying acquired resistance to two potent selective FGFR inhibitors, AZD4547 and BAY116387, in LC cell lines. The antitumor activity of AZD4547 and BAY1163877 was screened in 24 LC cell lines, including 5 with FGFR1 amplification. Two cell lines containing FGFR1 amplifications, H1581 and DMS114, were sensitive to FGFR inhibitors (IC50<250 nm). Clones of FGFR1-amplified H1581 cells resistant to AZD4547 or BAY116387 (H1581AR and H1581BR cells, respectively) were established. Receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) array and immunoblotting analyses showed strong overexpression and activation of Met in H1581AR/BR cells, compared with that in the parental cells. Gene set enrichment analysis against the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database showed that cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathways were significantly enriched in H1581AR/BR cells, with Met contributing significantly to the core enrichment. Genomic DNA quantitative PCR and fluorescent in situ hybridization analyses showed MET amplification in H1581AR, but not in H1581BR, cells. Met amplification drives acquired resistance to AZD4547 in H1581AR cells by activating ErbB3. Combination treatment with FGFR inhibitors and an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)/Met inhibitor, crizotinib, or Met-specific short interfering RNA (siRNA) synergistically inhibited cell proliferation in both H1581AR and H1581BR cells. Conversely, ectopic expression of Met in H1581 cells conferred resistance to AZD4547 and BAY1163877. Acquired resistance to FGFR inhibitors not only altered cellular morphology, but also promoted migration and invasion of resistant clones, in part by inducing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Taken together, our data suggest that Met activation is sufficient to bypass dependency on FGFR signaling. Concurrent inhibition of the Met and FGFR pathways may have synergistic clinical benefits when targeting FGFR-dependent LC.

Abstract
WIN-34B showed analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in various animal models of pain and osteoarthritis. However, the molecular mechanism by which WIN-34B inhibits pain and inflammation in vivo remains to be elucidated. We investigated the molecular mechanisms of the actions of WIN-34B using various in vitro models using fibroblast-like synoviocytes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA FLSs), RAW264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages. WIN-34B inhibited the level of IL-6, PGE2, and MMP-13 in IL-1β-stimulated RA FLSs in a dose-dependent manner. The mRNA levels were also inhibited by WIN-34B. The level of PGE2, NO, IL-1β, and TNF-α were inhibited by WIN-34B at different concentrations in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The production of NO and PGE2 was inhibited by WIN-34B in a dose-dependent manner in LPS-stimulated peritoneal macrophages. All of these effects were comparable to the positive control, celecoxib or indomethacin. IκB signaling pathways were inhibited by WIN-34B, and the migration of NF-κB into the nucleus was inhibited, which is consistent with the degradation of IκB-α. Taken together, the results suggest that WIN-34B has potential as a therapeutic drug to reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators.

Abstract
To determine whether adiponectin may have synergistic effects in combination with the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β regarding the production of proinflammatory mediators during arthritic joint inflammation, synovial cells from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients were treated with adiponectin, IL-1β, and their combination for 24 h. Culture supernatant was collected and analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for levels of IL-6, IL-8, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Adiponectin-mediated intracellular signaling pathways were investigated to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying their synergy. The association of proinflammatory mediators with adiponectin was investigated in the synovial fluid of arthritis patients. Adiponectin functioned synergistically with IL-1β to activate IL-6, IL-8, and PGE2 expression in RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes; Levels of VEGF, MMP-1, and MMP-13 were not synergistically stimulated. Adiponectin and IL-1β each increased the expression of both adiponectin receptor 1 and IL-1 receptor 1. However, adiponectin and IL-1β did not synergistically support the degradation of IκB-α or the nuclear translocation of NF-κB. Synergistically increased gene expression was significantly inhibited by MG132, an NF-κB inhibitor. Supporting the in vitro results, IL-6 and IL-8 levels were positively associated with adiponectin in synovial joint fluid from patients with RA, but not osteoarthritis (OA). In conclusion, adiponectin and IL-1β may synergistically stimulate the production of proinflammatory mediators through unknown signaling pathways during arthritic joint inflammation. Adiponectin may be more important to the pathogenesis of RA than previously thought.

Abstract
Taheebo, the purple inner bark of the Bignoniaceae tree Tabebuia avellanedae Lorentz ex Griseb, which is found in tropical rain forests in northeastern Brazil, has been used as a traditional medicine for various diseases for more than 1,500 years. In the current study, various animal models were used to demonstrate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of its ethanolic extract, thereby investigating its potential as a therapeutic treatment for diseases with pain and inflammation. In the hot plate and writhing tests for the in vivo analgesic effect test of Taheebo, a 200 mg/kg dose of the extract induced a significant anti-nociceptive effect and increased the pain threshold by approximately 30% compared with the control. In vascular permeability and tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA)‑, arachidonic acid- and carrageenan-induced paw edema tests for anti-inflammatory effects, treatment with 200 mg/kg Taheebo led to significant anti-inflammatory effects and inhibited inflammation by 30-50% compared with the control. At 100 mg/kg, the extract decreased the levels of pain and inflammation in all tested models, but the degree of inhibition was not statistically significant. The results suggest that the ethanolic extract of the inner bark of Tabebuia avellanedae has the potential to be developed as a therapeutic or supportive drug against diseases with accompanying pain and inflammation, including osteoarthritis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether thymosin β4 (Tβ4) levels are increased in the serum of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, and if this increase is associated with RA disease activity and resistance to treatment. Blood samples from 40 patients with RA were collected at baseline and 6 months after starting treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD) and/or tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α blocker. Serum levels of Tβ4 were measured by ELISA. Tβ4 levels (mean ± standard deviation) in RA patients were significantly (approximately tenfold) higher than in healthy controls (577.4 ± 67.92 vs. 56.61 ± 5.72 ng/mL). Serum Tβ4 levels in patients with severe disease activity before therapy were slightly higher than in patients with moderate disease activity (662.4 ± 491.5 vs. 462.5 ± 305.3 ng/ml, P > 0.05). Tβ4 levels were significantly associated with disease activity according to the 28-joint Disease Activity Score. The mean Tβ4 level at baseline in the DMARD treatment group was significantly lower than in the DMARD + TNF-α blocker treatment group. Tβ4 levels were increased in the serum of patients with RA and were positively associated with disease activity. Levels of Tβ4 may also be relevant in determining or predicting resistance to RA treatment. Further studies are necessary to determine if Tβ4 is an appropriate therapeutic target for controlling inflammation associated with RA.

Abstract
In this study, data from a pandemic H1N1 outbreak in Korea were analyzed according to time, geography (districts), and age. A total of 252,271 samples collected nationwide were referred to the Greencross Reference Laboratory from June 2009 to February 2010 for H1N1 confirmation testing. Of these samples, 105,300 (41.7%) were H1N1-positive. With time, positivity was highest (57.0%) from October 26 - November 1 (4 weeks after Chuseok). The positive rates among districts show the highest value in Ulsan City (63.1%) and the lowest in Gyeongnam Province (32.8%). The positive rates for ages 0-2, 3-5, 6-11, 12-17, 18-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and > 60 yr were 17.0%, 33.1%, 56.2%, 55.5%, 55.3%, 41.5%, 28.2%, 30.5%, 31.1%, and 16.8%, respectively, indirectly indicating propagation of H1N1 through schools. Pandemic control should involve school-targeted strategies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine whether the inflammatory milieu and/or hypoxia induces the dedifferentiation of synovial cells into mesenchymal stem-like cells, which may contribute to the tumor-like growth of synovial cells. Expression of mesenchymal stem cell markers (CD24, CD44, CD90, CD106, CD146 and Stro-1) was compared among cultured fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis (OA), bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM MSCs) and normal dermal fibroblasts. After the cells were stimulated with pro-inflammatory cytokines for 3 days under hypoxia or normoxia, the stem cell markers were analyzed by FACS. CD44 and CD90 were expressed constitutively in all four cell types. Only the BM MSCs strongly expressed CD146. The expression of stem cell markers was similar between FLSs from RA and those from OA patients. In addition, the expression levels in FLSs were similar to those in normal dermal fibroblasts. The stimulation of FLSs and dermal fibroblasts with IL-1β or a mixture of cytokines under hypoxia did not induce a marked change in the expression of stem cell markers. These results indirectly suggest that the pro-inflammatory milieu may be not sufficient to induce the dedifferentiation of FLSs in arthritic joints.

Abstract
We examined whether the expression and activation of pro-matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 varies from that of pro-MMP-13 in the joint fluid of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. To do this, joint fluid was collected from 34 RA and 34 OA patients. The collagenase (pro-MMP-1 and MMP-13, total MMP-1, and MMP-13), gelatinase (total MMP-2 and MMP-9), stromelysin (total MMP-3), matrilysin (total MMP-7), uPA, and tissue inhibitor of MMP (TIMP) levels were measured by ELISA. The level of total MMP-1 in RA joint fluids was similar to that of the OA joint fluid. In contrast, the level of total MMP-13 in the RA group was significantly higher than that of the OA group. Among various MMPs (MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, and MMP-9), only MMP-9 was strongly associated with total MMP-13 in both RA and OA. The level of uPA was also strongly associated with MMP-13 in RA but not OA, while the level of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 was not significantly different between RA and OA. In conclusion, MMP-9 and uPA might be involved in the activation of pro-MMP-13 through unknown mechanisms in arthritic diseases.

Abstract
Inflammation in the joint of rheumatoid arthritis is a complex immune reaction facilitated by various factors, such as cytokines, cells and hypoxia. Thus, we evaluated their relative capacity to produce proinflammatory mediators in response to IL-1beta, TNF-alpha or IL-17 under hypoxia or normoxia in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) and macrophages. The level of IL-6 expression was strongly increased in both FLSs and THP-1 macrophages in response to IL-1beta and TNF-alpha, but the level by TNF-alpha was less than that by IL-1beta. In contrast, the expression of IL-8 in both cell types was strongly stimulated by both IL-1beta and TNF-alpha. In FLSs, PGE(2) production increased only in response to IL-1beta; and no effect was observed in THP-1 cells and TNF-alpha-stimulated FLSs. In addition, the production by IL-17 was extremely low when compared with those induced by IL-1beta or TNF-alpha in FLSs and THP-1 cells. Hypoxia (2% O(2)) decreased IL-1beta-stimulated production of PGE(2), even though it increased the expression of mRNA and protein of COX-2. These results suggest that IL-1beta and TNF-alpha differentially regulate gene expression in FLSs and macrophages under hypoxia or normoxia.

Abstract
Introduction The objective of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory, nociceptive, and antiarthritic effects of piperine, the active phenolic component in black pepper extract. Methods The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of piperine was tested on interleukin 1β (IL1β)-stimulated fibroblast-like synoviocytes derived form patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The levels of IL6, matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs), cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were investigated by ELISA and RT-PCR analysis. The analgesic and antiarthritic activities of piperine were investigated on rat models of carrageenan-induced acute paw pain and arthritis. The former were evaluated with a paw pressure test, and the latter by measuring the squeaking score, paw volume, and weight distribution ratio. Piperine was administrated orally to rats at 20 and 100 mg/kg/day for 8 days. Results Piperine inhibited the expression of IL6 and MMP13 and reduced the production of PGE2 in a dose dependant manner at concentrations of 10 to 100 μg/ml. In particular, the production of PGE2 was significantly inhibited even at 10 μg/ml of piperine. Piperine inhibited the migration of activator protein 1 (AP-1), but not nuclear factor (NF)κB, into the nucleus in IL1β-treated synoviocytes. In rats, piperine significantly reduced nociceptive and arthritic symptoms at days 8 and 4, respectively. Histological staining showed that piperine significantly reduced the inflammatory area in the ankle joints. Conclusions These results suggest that piperine has anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antiarthritic effects in an arthritis animal model. Thus, piperine should be further studied with regard to use either as a pharmaceutical or as a dietary supplement for the treatment of arthritis.

Abstract
Mizoribine is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) that is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. However, clinical use of the drug is restricted to a few Asian countries due to a lack of comprehensive evidence on its effectiveness. The inhibitory effect of the drug on human osteoclastogenesis was investigated in the hopes of providing some clear evidence. Mizoribine was found to inhibit in vitro osteoclastogenesis in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the size of the pit area was closely related to the number of osteoclasts in a bone resorption assay. However, mizoribine did not affect the phosphorylation of MAP kinase (p38, JNK, ERK), the degradation of IkappaBalpha, or receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) expression in fibroblast-like synoviocytes stimulated with IL-1beta. These results suggested that mizoribine may partially suppress osteoclastogenesis, leading to progressive bone erosion by inhibiting the growth or the signaling pathway of precursor cells to form osteoclasts rather than fibroblast-like synoviocytes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Hepatic steatosis occurs frequently in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Recently, several studies suggested that steatosis plays an important role as a cofactor in other liver diseases such as hepatic fibrosis, hepatitis, and liver cancer. In contrast to HCV, however, the molecular mechanism by which HBV mediates hepatic steatosis has not been clearly studied. Here, we show the molecular mechanism by which hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) induces hepatic steatosis. METHODS Lipid accumulation and the expression of various lipid metabolic genes were investigated in HBx-transfected Chang liver cells, HepG2-HBx stable cells, and HBx-transgenic mice. RESULTS Overexpression of HBx induced hepatic lipid accumulation in HepG2-HBx stable cells and HBx-transgenic mice. It also up-regulated the messenger RNA and protein levels of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1, but not peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha). Moreover, we also determined that the expression of HBx increases PPARgamma gene expression as well as its transcriptional activity in hepatic cells, mediated by CCAAT enhancer binding protein alpha activation. Finally, we showed that HBx expression is able to up-regulate the gene expressions of various lipogenic and adipogenic enzymes in hepatic cells. CONCLUSIONS We showed that the increased HBx expression causes lipid accumulation in hepatic cells mediated by sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 and PPARgamma, which could be a putative molecular mechanism mediating the pathophysiology of HBV infection.

Abstract
The gradual loss of telomeric DNA can contribute to replicative senescence and thus, having longer telomeric DNA is generally considered to provide a longer lifespan. Maintenance and stabilization of telomeric DNA is assisted by binding of multiple DNA-binding proteins, including those involved in double strand break (DSB) repair. We reasoned that declining DSB repair capacity and increased telomere shortening in aged individuals may be associated with decreased expression of DSB repair proteins capable of telomere binding. Our data presented here show that among the DSB repair proteins tested, only the expression of Ku70 and Mre11 showed statistically significant age-dependent changes in human lymphocytes. Furthermore, we found that expressions of Ku70 and Mre11 are statistically correlated, which indicate that the function of Ku70 and Mre11 may be related. All the other DSB repair proteins tested, Sir2, TRF1 and Ku80, did not show any significant differences upon aging. In line with these data, people who live in the regional community (longevity group), which was found to have statistically longer average life span than the rest area, shows higher level of Ku70 expression than those living in the neighboring control community. Taken together, our data show, for the first time, that Ku70 and Mre11 may represent new biomarkers for aging and further suggest that maintenance of higher expression of Ku70 and Mre11 may be responsible for keeping longer life span observed in the longevity group.

Abstract
Terminal differentiation of hematopoietic cells follows a precisely orchestrated program of transcriptional regulatory events at the promoters of both lineage-specific and ubiquitous genes. Here we show that the transcription factor ATF2 is associated with the induction of granulocytic differentiation, and the molecular interaction of ATF2 with a tissue-specific coactivator activating signal cointegator-2 (ASC-2) potentiates the differentiation procedure. All-trans retinoic acid (RA) induced the phosphorylation and expression of ATF2 in the early and middle phase of granulocyte differentiation, respectively. The activation of granulocyte-specific gene expression is increased with the concerted action of another basic regionleucine zipper factor, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBPalpha), and ASC-2, which function in a cooperative manner. The interaction between ATF2 and C/EBPalpha in RA-treated cells was enhanced by the ectopic expression of ASC-2. ATF2-mediated transactivation was also increased by co-transfection of ASC-2. This resulted from the direct protein interaction that the N-terminal transactivation domain of ATF2 interacts with the central region of ASC-2. Furthermore, the molecular interaction of ATF2 and ASC-2 was stimulated by RA treatment and inhibited by p38beta kinase inhibitor. Taking these results together, these results suggest that the differentiation-dependent expression and phosphorylation of ATF2 protein physically and functionally interacts with C/EBPalpha and coativator ASC-2 and synergizes to induce target gene transcription during granulocytic differentiation.

Abstract
This paper deals with interaction between a bubble and fluid around it, visualized by a moving object flow image analyzer (MOFIA) consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) moving object image analyzer (MOIA) and two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV). The experiments were carried out for rising bubbles of various sizes and shapes in stagnant water in a vertical pipe. In the MOFIA employed, 3D-MOIA was used to measure bubble motion and PIV to measure fluid flow. The 3D position and shape of a bubble and the velocity field were measured simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the interaction was characterized by the shape, size and density of a bubble. Concretely, they showed the characteristics of bubble motion, wake shedding, and flow field.

Abstract
Adipocyte differentiation is a very complex process in which whole-cell changes are accompanied. Among them, type I procollagen gene has been shown to specifically decrease during adipocyte differentiation; however, little is known about the molecular mechanism. To examine how type I procollagen gene expression is regulated at the level of transcription during adipocyte differentiation, 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cell line was used as an in vitro model. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that mRNA expression of type I procollagen gene was dramatically reduced during adipocyte differentiation. Time-course analysis indicated that decrease in mRNA expression occurred at early stage of differentiation. Studies on several stable cell lines showed that transcriptional activities of both alpha1 and alpha2 promoters decreased significantly during adipocyte differentiation. Despite extensive deletion-promoter analyses, however, we could not identify the cis-element responsible for the switch-off of type I procollagen gene during adipocyte differentiation, suggesting that the transcriptional repression of this gene occur through general transcription machinery rather than a specific cis-element. In conclusion, down-regulation of type I procollagen mRNA expression during adipocyte differentiation is due to repression of its promoter activity through general transcription machinery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to calculate the size and the computed tomography (CT) number of normal parotid and submandibular glands and to evaluate their relationship with respect to sex, age, and obesity in the Korean population. STUDY DESIGN The authors investigated the axial CT images of 42 healthy volunteers. The maximum cross-sectional area (MCSA) was used as an indicator of the size of the gland. Three regions of interest on axial scans were selected to calculate the mean CT number. RESULTS There was a significant decrease in the mean MCSA of the submandibular gland and the CT number of both glands with age. The MCSA of the submandibular gland in males was larger than that in females. There was a close correlation between the parotid and the submandibular glands with respect to the CT number, as well as between the left and right glands with respect to the MCSA and the CT number. The body mass index was positively correlated with the MCSA of the parotid gland, whereas the body mass indexes and the CT numbers of both glands were negatively correlated. CONCLUSIONS Both age and obesity are closely correlated with the size and the CT number of the major salivary glands. Moreover, the correlation between the CT numbers of the parotid and the submandibular glands may be used for diagnostic purposes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was performed to assess the diagnostic and quantifying ability of digital subtraction images for simulated apical root resorption, as well as to compare the diagnostic accuracy of conventional intraoral radiographs with digital subtraction images for this condition. STUDY DESIGN Digital and intraoral radiographs of 10 sound maxillary central incisors and those with simulated apical root resorption were taken with varying horizontal and vertical angulations of the x-ray beam. Paired t tests were used to compare the lengths of the sound teeth on the images with their actual lengths, and the estimated amount of simulated apical root resorption was compared with the actual amount of tooth loss by means of Emago software. The diagnostic accuracy for detecting lesions was also evaluated on conventional intraoral radiographs and digital subtraction images through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the actual lengths and those measured on the reconstructed images of the sound teeth. The calculated amounts of apical root resorption showed no statistically significant differences in comparison with the actual amounts (P >.05). The diagnostic accuracy of the conventional intraoral radiographs in detecting the lesions was low (ROC area = 0.6446). CONCLUSION A quantitative analysis of small amounts of apical root resorption can be performed by means of digital subtraction radiography.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to evaluate the usefulness of early diastolic notch depth in predicting adverse perinatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN Uterine artery Doppler velocimetry is widely applied in predicting pregnancy outcomes. Recent studies of uterine artery early diastolic notch have demonstrated its usefulness as a marker for fetal well-being. The early diastolic notch represents the reflected blood flow of uteroplacental circulation. This study was carried out under the hypothesis that when early diastolic notch is present evaluating its depth plays a significant role in predicting poor pregnancy outcomes. Its ability to predict adverse perinatal outcomes was evaluated in 198 pregnant women with early diastolic notch after 28 weeks' gestation. RESULTS The incidence of adverse perinatal outcome (5-minute Apgar score <7, cesarean delivery because of fetal distress, admission to neonatal intensive care unit, fetal growth restriction, or perinatal death) was 90.5% when the notch index was </=0.70. When the notch index range was 0.70 to 0.79, 0.80 to 0.89, and >/=0.90, the respective incidences were 72.3%, 46. 9%, and 28.1%. CONCLUSION This study suggests that evaluating notch depth in the presence of early diastolic notch on uterine artery velocimetry during the third trimester would be a useful method for predicting adverse perinatal outcomes.

Abstract
To evaluate the clinical efficacy of alpha-interferon(IFN-alpha) plus cis-platinum in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). 56 inoperable patients with HCC were divided into IFN-alpha plus cis-platinum treated group (n = 30) and no antitumor therapy group (n = 26). The survival of IFN-alpha plus cis-platinum treated patients was significantly better than that of patients who received no antitumor therapy (p = 0.001). Median survival time was 33 weeks and 14.0 weeks, respectively. The cumulative estimated survival rates of our IFN-alpha plus cis-platinum treated group (93.5% at 3mo, 75.0% at 6mo) were for longer than that of the no antitumor therapy group (84.6% at 3mo, 57.7% at 6mo). Objective tumor regression, greater than 50% was observed in 13.3% (4 of 30) of patients receiving IFN-alpha plus cis-platinum. By the univariate analysis, the absence of portal vein thrombus (p < 0.05), alkaline phosphatase lesser than 280 U/L (p = 0.001), total bilirubin less than 2.0 mg% (p < 0.05), serum triglyceride less than 155 mg/dl (p < 0.05) were shown to be the factors most significantly favoring a better survival. By the multivariate analysis, using Cox proportional hazards model, IFN-alpha plus cis-platinum treated group (p = 0.0001), alkaline phosphatase less than 280 mg/dl (p = 0.005), the absence of portal vein thrombus (p = 0.020) were independent favorable prognostic factors. We conclude that IFN-alpha plus cis-platinum is useful in patients with inoperable HCC and the above favorable prognostic factors may also be useful in the design and analysis of future clinical trials of systemic chemotherapy for HCC.

Abstract
Oil sorption capacities of various natural and man-made fibrous sorbents were compared in a simulated seawater bath containing oil. Natural sorbents such as milkweed, kapok, cotton, and wool showed higher sorption capacities than man-made sorbents such as polyester, polypropylene, viscose rayon, nylon 6, nylon 66, and acetate. Sorption capacities of the natural sorbents were over 30 g oil/g fiber. No definite advantages were observed using man-made bicomponent and biconstituent fibers over regular man-made fibers with respect to their sorption capacity. Analyses of sorption mechanisms using an environmental scanning electron microscope revealed that an oil deposit disappeared from the fiber surface after a certain time interval in milkweed, kapok, and cotton. This suggested that the sorption of oil in these fibers occurred through capillary action, probably due to their hollow lumens. Contrarily, adsorption, a surface phenomenon, would be the most prominent mechanism for oil sorption of wool fibers due to large amounts of surface wax, irregular scaly surfaces, and crimp. Effects of both adsorption and absorption were shown in the oil sorption of man-made fibers, depending upon the type and shape of the sorbent. Dumbbell-like oil deposits were seen on the fiber surface in certain oleophilic man-made fibers, because of a partial wetting of oil on the fiber surface. For some hydrophilic man-made fibers such as polyvinylalcohol and copolymer of isobutylene-maleic anhydride, the physical configuration of the fiber was a decisive factor in determining oil sorpton capacity of the sorbents.

Abstract
A 65-year-old male patient presented multiple cutaneous nodules on trunk and an erythematous inflammatory lesion resembling erysipelas on left side of neck. Result of skin biopsies disclosed groups of metastatic adenocarcinoma cells in the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and lumina of the lymphatic vessels. Histopathologic examination of the stomach, along with the gastroscope, established that the cutaneous metastasis was of stomach origin.
