Abstract
OBJECTIVE Animal hoarding is a special manifestation of Hoarding Disorder, characterized by the accumulation of animals and failure to provide them with minimal care. The main objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the characteristics of animal hoarding with a focus on the profile of affected individuals and accumulation behavior features. METHODS A systematic search of the literature using the electronic databases MEDLINE, SCOPUS and LILACS was conducted until October 2022. We included case series (n ≥ 10) and cross-sectional studies assessing animal hoarding. RESULTS 374 studies were initially retrieved. Most studies were classified as poor quality and significant risk of bias. 538 individuals with animal hoarding were evaluated. These individuals were predominantly middle-aged, unmarried females who lived alone in urban areas. Most residences presented unsanitary conditions. Recidivism rates varied from 13-41%. Cats and dogs were the main hoarded species, mostly acquired through unplanned breeding and found with lack of hygiene; diseases; injuries; and behavioral problems. Animal carcasses were found in up to 60% of the properties. CONCLUSION Animal hoarding is a complex condition that requires urgent attention. More research is necessary to develop effective strategies that can save community resources, improve animal and human welfare, and prevent recidivism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bipolar Disorder type 1 (BD1) and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) share similar behavioral and cognitive symptoms, rendering the differential diagnosis between them a clinical challenge. We investigated the accuracy of social cognition measures to differentiate bvFTD from BD. METHODS We included three groups of participants: early-onset BD1 (in remission, n = 20), bvFTD (n = 18), and cognitively healthy controls (HC, n = 40), matched for age, schooling, and sex. All participants underwent cognitive assessment including the facial emotion recognition (FER) and the modified faux-pas tests, which assess mentalizing. RESULTS Compared to HC, BD1, and bvFTD patients underperformed on both social cognition measures. BD1 and bvFTD did not differ on the FER's or faux pas tests' total score, although bvFTD patients had significantly higher difficulties than BD1 to detect social faux-pas (p < 0.001, d = 1.35). CONCLUSIONS BD1 and bvFTD share deficits in the core social cognition functions. These findings should be considered in the development of tasks aiming to improve the clinical differentiation between both disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Scientific data regarding the prevalence of COVID-19 neurological manifestations and prognosis in Latin America countries is still lacking. Therefore, the study aims to understand neurological manifestations of SARS-CoV 2 infection and outcomes in the Brazilian population. METHODS This study is part of the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry, a multicentric cohort, including data from 37 hospitals. For the present analysis, patients were grouped according to the presence of reported symptoms (i.e., headache; anosmia and ageusia; syncope and dizziness) vs. clinically-diagnosed neurological manifestations (clinically-defined neurological syndrome: neurological signs or diagnoses captured by clinical evaluation) and matched with patients without neurological manifestations by age, sex, number of comorbidities, hospital of admission, and whether or not patients had underlying neurological disease. RESULTS From 6,635 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, 30.8% presented reported neurological manifestations, 10.3% were diagnosed with a neurological syndrome and 60.1% did not show any neurological manifestations. In patients with reported symptoms, the most common ones were headache (20.7%), ageusia (11.1%) and anosmia (8.0%). In patients with neurological syndromes, acute encephalopathy was the most common diagnosis (9.7%). In the matched analysis, patients with neurological syndromes presented more cases of septic shock (17.0 vs. 13.0%, p = 0.045), intensive care unit admission (45.3 vs. 38.9%, p = 0.023), and mortality (38.7 vs. 32.6%, p = 0.026; and 39.2 vs. 30.3%, p < 0.001) when compared to controls. CONCLUSION COVID-19 in-hospital patients with clinically defined neurological syndromes presented a higher incidence of septic shock, ICU admission and death when compared to controls.

Abstract
Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a cognição socioemocional e as funções executivas em pacientes com Transtorno Depressivo Maior unipolar. A amostra incluiu 22 pacientes entre 36 e 93 anos de idade (M = 59,32; DP = 12,89) e 23 indivíduos controles entre 30 e 81 anos de idade (M = 63,00; DP = 13,56). Além de dados demográficos, foram avaliados sintomas de ansiedade e de depressão, empatia, teoria da mente, reconhecimento de emoções, controle inibitório, flexibilidade cognitiva e fluência verbal. Não houve diferença estatística significativa entre os grupos quanto à idade e à escolaridade. Os pacientes apresentaram significativamente mais ansiedade, depressão e angústia pessoal do que os controles. Indivíduos com sintomas depressivos mais graves apresentaram menor velocidade de processamento.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by mood swings. Psychosocial interventions, such as psychoeducation, play an essential role in promoting social rehabilitation and improving pharmacological treatment.
AIM To investigate the role of psychoeducation in BD.
METHODS A systematic review of original studies regarding psychoeducation interventions in patients with BD and their relatives was developed. A systematic literature search was performed using the Medline, Scopus, and Lilacs databases. No review articles or qualitative studies were included in the analysis. There were no date restriction criteria, and studies published up to April 2021 were included.
RESULTS A total of forty-seven studies were selected for this review. Thirty-eight studies included patients, and nine included family members. Psychoeducation of patients and family members was associated with a lower number of new mood episodes and a reduction in number and length of stay of hospitalizations. Psychoeducational interventions with patients are associated with improved adherence to drug treatment. The strategies studied in patients and family members do not interfere with the severity of symptoms of mania or depression or with the patient's quality of life or functionality. Psychoeducational interventions with family members do not alter patients' adherence to pharmacotherapy.
CONCLUSION Psychoeducation as an adjunct strategy to pharmacotherapy in the treatment of BD leads to a reduction in the frequency of new mood episodes, length of hospital stay and adherence to drug therapy.

Abstract
Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers are of great relevance in clinical research, especially after the AT(N) framework. They enable early diagnosis, disease staging and research with new promising drugs, monitoring therapeutic response. However, the high cost and low availability of the most well-known methods limits their use in low and medium-income countries. In this context, Millipore xMap® Luminex may be a cost-effective alternative. In our study, using INNOTEST® as reference, we assess the diagnostic accuracy of Millipore xMap® and propose a cutoff point for AD. Methods: We performed lumbar puncture of seven older individuals with clinically defined AD, 17 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and 11 without objective cognitive impairment-control group (CG). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers concentrations for aB42, p-Tau, and t-Tau were measured by INNOTEST® and Millipore xMap®, and then the techniques were compared to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the new test and to define a cutoff. Results: INNOTEST® and Millipore xMap® measurements showed all correlations >0.8 for the same biomarker, except for t-Tau that was 0.66. Millipore xMap® measurements showed a robust accuracy for all biomarkers, with AUC higher than 0.808 (t-Tau), and the best for Aβ42 (AUC = 0.952). The most accurate cutoffs were found at 1012.98 pg/ml (Aβ42), 64.54 pg/ml (p-tau), 3251.81 pg/ml (t-tau), 3.370 (t-Tau/Aβ42), and 0.059 (p-Tau/Aβ42). Conclusion: Given its good accuracy and cost-effectiveness, Milliplex xMap® tests seems a reliable and promising tool, especially for low and middle-income countries.

Abstract
Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a chronic a multifactorial psychiatric illness that affects mood, cognition, and functioning. BD is associated with several psychiatric conditions as well clinical comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular diseases. The neurobiology of BD is complex and multifactorial and several systems have been implicated. Considering that the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) plays an important role in cardiovascular diseases and that recently evidence has suggested its role in psychiatric disorders, the aim of the present study is to summarize and to discuss recent findings related to the modulation of RAS components in BD. A systematic search of the literature using the electronic databases MEDLINE and LILACS was conducted through March 2019. The search terms were: "Bipolar Disorder"; "Renin Angiotensin System"; "Angiotensin 2"; "Angiotensin receptors"; "Angiotensin 1-7"; "ACE"; "ACE2"; "Mas Receptor". We included original studies assessing RAS in BD patients. Two hundred twenty-two citations were initially retrieved. Eleven studies were included in our systematic review. In the majority of studies (6 of 8), the ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism did not differ between BD patients and controls. BD patients presented higher plasma renin activity in comparison with controls. The studies evaluating the RAS molecules in BD are very scarce and heterogeneous. The literature suggests a potential role of RAS in BD. Further studies are necessary to investigate this relationship.

Abstract
To investigate the clinical manifestation, disease course, and prognosis of migraine patients with or without personality disorders. This cross-sectional study evaluated 61 patients with migraine diagnosed according to the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Personality disorders were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-II). Migraine severity was assessed with the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6). We also used a structured clinical interview to diagnose comorbid mood disorders. Of the 61 patients, 20 (32.8%) had personality disorders. Personality disorders included obsessive-compulsive 14/61 (23.0%), avoidant 6/61 (9.8%), borderline 6/61 (9.8%), paranoid 6/61 (9.8%), schizoid 2/61 (3.3%), histrionic 1/61 (1.6%) and dependent 1/61 (1.6%) types. Compared to migraine patients without personality disorders, comorbidity with any personality disorders was associated with an increased frequency of chronic migraine (p < 0.001) and more severe headache as assessed by the HIT-6 (p < 0.001). Comorbidity with personality disorders was associated with more severe forms of migraine symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this article was to evaluate the cognitive status of remitted patients with bipolar disorder (BD) using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Frontal Assessment Battery, and Brief Assessment of Cognition in Affective Disorders (BAC-A). The BAC-A is a comprehensive test battery addressing the cognitive domains compromised in BD. We also aimed to analyze potential clinical and immune predictors of cognitive performance in BD. METHODS Remitted patients with BD (M ± S.E: 43.80 ± 10.87 years) and age-matched controls (M ± S.E: 43.52 ± 11.72) were administered clinical questionnaires and cognitive tests. Inflammatory plasma levels (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ, TNFα, IL-17A, sTNFR1, and sTNFR2) were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We generated a global cognitive performance index based on BAC-A scores. Multivariate analyses compared cognitive and immune measures across groups. A regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between global cognitive performance, clinical and immune parameters in BD. RESULTS Remitted patients with BD performed poorly on tasks of affective processing, verbal memory, working verbal memory, and executive functioning. Patients with BD presented higher plasma levels sTNFR1, TNFα, IFN, IL2, IL4, IL6, IL10, and IL17compared with controls. Education and MMSE were found to be positively correlated with global cognitive performance. IL6 plasma levels were negatively correlated with global cognitive performance. CONCLUSION The major determinants of poor cognitive performance in BD were education and IL6 plasma levels.

Abstract
There is great evidence linking neurotrophic factor (NF) dysfunction with Parkinson's disease (PD) pathophysiology. This study was conducted to evaluate plasma levels of NFs and their possible associations with clinical symptoms in PD. For this purpose, 40 PD patients and 25 controls were subjected to a clinical evaluation and peripheral blood draw. Plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), pro-BDNF, neurotrophin 3, neurotrophin 4, nerve growth, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor and ciliary neurotrophic factor were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There was no significant difference between PD patients and controls regarding the plasma levels of the evaluated NFs. In addition, NF levels were not associated with disease duration, degree of motor or functional impairment, cognitive performance or severity of depressive symptoms. In conclusion, although NFs may play relevant roles in the pathophysiology of PD, the circulating levels of these molecules are not necessarily changed in patients with PD.

Abstract
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular autoimmune disease characterized by skeletal muscle weakness which can impact motor function and, furthermore, produce negative impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL). OBJECTIVE To evaluate the predictors for HRQOL in patients with MG. METHODS Eighty patients were evaluated with the MG Foundation of America classification and the MG Composite scale. HRQOL was estimated by the MGQOL15, while anxious and depressive symptoms were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). RESULTS The mean age of patients was 41.9 years with mean illness duration of 13.5 years. Almost half of the patients (43.75%) had significant anxiety and more than a quarter (27.50%) had depressive symptoms. Factors that influenced the HRQOL in MG were skeletal muscle weakness and anxiety and depressive symptoms (p < .001 in logistic regression model). CONCLUSION Anxiety and depressive symptoms, besides motor symptoms, influence HRQOL in MG. Mental health must be a clinical focus in addition to the treatment of somatic symptoms during the course of MG.

Abstract
AIM Although accelerated aging profile has been described in bipolar disorder (BD), the biology linking BD and aging is still largely unknown. Reduced levels and/or activity of a protein named Klotho is associated with decreased life span, premature aging and occurrence of age-related diseases. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate plasma levels of Klotho in BD patients and controls. METHODS Forty patients with type 1 BD and 30 controls were enrolled in this study. After clinical evaluation, peripheral blood samples were drawn and plasma levels of Klotho were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Patients with BD and controls presented similar age and sex distribution. The mean ± SD length of illness was 24.00 ± 12.75 years. BD patients presented increased frequency of clinical comorbidities in comparison with controls, mainly arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hypothyroidism. Both patients with BD in remission and in mania exhibited increased plasma levels of Klotho in comparison with controls. There was no significant difference between patients in mania and patients in remission regarding the levels of Klotho. CONCLUSION Klotho-related pathway is altered in BD. Contrary to our original hypothesis, our sample of patients with BD presented increased plasma levels of Klotho in comparison with controls. Elevated levels of Klotho in long-term BD patients may be associated with the disorder progression. Further studies are needed to better understand the role of Klotho in BD and other mood disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Changes in immune system have been reported in schizophrenia. This study aimed to evaluate the involvement of IL-33, a member of the IL-1 cytokine family, in schizophrenia and its association with cognitive performance in these patients. METHODS Forty patients with chronic schizophrenia and 40 healthy subjects participated in the study. Serum levels of IL-33 and sST2 (soluble form of the IL-33 receptor) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Patients were evaluated with the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) and the Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale (SCoRS). RESULTS Patients with schizophrenia and controls presented similar serum levels of IL-33 and sST2. Levels of both markers were positively correlated with cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia. CONCLUSION We found a significant correlation between IL-33 and sST2 levels and cognition in schizophrenia. Our results might help in the understanding of how immune markers are associated with cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. It remains to be determined whether the association between IL-33/sST2 and cognition is restricted to patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. The cause of neurodegeneration in PD is not completely understood, and evidence has shown that inflammatory/immune changes may be involved in PD pathophysiology. Herein, we aimed to determine the profile of the peripheral immune system in patients with PD in comparison with controls. Forty patients with PD and 25 age- and gender-matched controls were enrolled in this study. From these, 23 PD patients and 21 controls were included in the immunophenotyping analyses. Peripheral blood was drawn on the same day of the clinical assessment and submitted to plasma separation for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or cytometric bead array. Immunophenotyping analyses of the peripheral blood were performed by flow cytometry. We found that patients with PD presented peripheral immune changes evidenced by decreased percentage of T lymphocytes (CD3+ cells), especially activated T lymphocytes (CD4+CD25+ cells), when compared with controls. In line with these results, we also found decreased plasma levels of the cytokines IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNF, IFN-γ, and IL-17A in the PD group. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the production of cytokines by peripheral blood mononuclear cells harvested from healthy young donors was reduced after exposure to the anti-parkinsonian drugs levodopa and pramipexole. Our data corroborate the hypothesis that immunological mechanisms are involved in PD. It is not clear whether the differences that we have found are due to adaptive mechanisms or to changes associated with PD, including pharmacological treatment, or even directly related to the disease pathophysiology. Future studies are needed in this regard.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between Toxoplasma gondii infection and the development of bipolar disorder (BD) has long been investigated, yet to date it is still poorly understood and documented. The aim of this review is to derive a summary estimate of the strength of the association between infection with T. gondii and BD from the available published studies. METHODS A systematic review was performed using PubMed, LILACS, PsycINFO, and Embase databases. Studies which included a proportion of seropositive BD patients and controls were further examined in a meta-analysis. RESULTS One hundred eighteen citations were initially retrieved. Thirteen studies were included in our systematic review. Eight out of these thirteen studies were included in our meta-analysis. Statistical analyses showed that T. gondii infection is associated with with BD (OR=1.26). LIMITATIONS Small sample size was the major limitation among the studies that carried out serological analyses. In addition, the available studies did not have enough information on disease status/severity or type of bipolar disorder. Also, it was not possible to analyze pregnancy status or perinatal infection. Future studies addressing the aforementioned topics are clearly needed. CONCLUSIONS Despite heterogeneous results, patients with BD are more likely to be infected by T. gondii than controls. Early T. gondii infection might predispose the development of BD. T.gondii infection is becoming clinically relevant in psychiatric disorders and future mechanistic studies are required to elucidate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

METHODS MEDLINE/PUBMED, The Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials, SciELO and LILACS were searched for studies published until December 2014. Included articles were: prospective studies; including patients older than 18 years, diagnosed with periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis submitted to non-surgical periodontal treatment; with a control group receiving no periodontal treatment; with outcomes including at least one marker of rheumatoid arthritis activity. Methodological quality of the studies was assessed using PEDro scale. Quantitative data were pooled in statistical meta-analysis using Review Manager 5. RESULTS Four articles were included. Non-surgical periodontal treatment was associated with a significant reduction of DAS28 (OR: -1.18; 95% CI: -1.43, -0.93; p<0.00001). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, patient's assessment of rheumatoid activity using visual analogical scale, tender and swollen joint counts showed a trend toward reduction (not statistically significant). CONCLUSIONS The reduction of DAS 28 in patients with rheumatoid arthritis after periodontal treatment suggests that the improvement of periodontal condition is beneficial to these patients. Further randomized controlled clinical trials are necessary to confirm this finding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Childhood obesity has been associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to compare plasma levels of traditional metabolic markers, adipokines and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type 1 (sTNFR1) in overweight, obese and lean children. We also assessed the relationships of these molecules with classical metabolic risk factors. METHODS This study included 104 children and adolescents, which were grouped as: lean (n=24), overweight (n=30), and obese subjects (n=50). They were subjected to anthropometrical, clinical and laboratorial measurements. All measurements were compared between groups. Correlation analyses were also performed to evaluate the association between clinical data, traditional metabolic markers, adipokines and sTNFR1. RESULTS Fasting glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were comparable in lean, overweight and obese subjects. Plasma levels of sTNFR1 were similar in lean and overweight subjects, but significantly increased in obese group. Leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels did not differ when overweight were compared to obese subjects. However, all adipokines differed significantly when lean subjects were compared to overweight and obese individuals. Plasma levels of adiponectin were negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI), whereas leptin, resistin and sTNFR1 concentrations positively correlated with BMI. CONCLUSION Our results showed significant differences in circulating levels of the evaluated markers when lean, overweight and obese individuals were compared, suggesting that these biomarkers may change from lean to overweight and from overweight to obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of PD remains elusive. The renin-angiotensin-system (RAS) has recently been implicated in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. This study aimed to compare plasma levels of components of the RAS of individuals with PD with controls. We also investigated the association between these circulating markers and motor, depressive and cognitive parameters. METHODS Thirty PD patients and twenty controls were subjected to clinical evaluation, including cognitive and depressive symptoms assessment. Plasma levels of Angiotensin (Ang) I, Ang II, Ang- (1-7), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and ACE2 were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). RESULTS PD patients presented lower plasma levels of Ang I, Ang II and Ang- (1-7) than control individuals. Among PD patients, lower circulating levels of angiotensins were associated with increased severity of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study showing that peripheral levels of RAS components are changed in PD and associated with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the frequency of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their parents, in comparison with children and adolescents without developmental disorders. Methods: Anthropometric measures were obtained in 69 outpatients with ASD (8.4±4.2 years old), 23 with ADHD (8.5±2.4) and 19 controls without developmental disorders (8.6±2.9) between August and November 2014. Parents of patients with ASD and ADHD also had their anthropometric parameters taken. Overweight was defined as a percentile ≥85; obesity as a percentile ≥95; and underweight as a percentile ≤5. For adults, overweight was defined as a BMI between 25 and 30kg/m2 and obesity as a BMI higher than 30kg/m2. Results: Children and adolescents with ASD and ADHD had higher BMI percentile (p<0.01) and z-score (p<0.01) than controls, and increased frequency of overweight and obesity (p=0.04). Patients with ASD and ADHD did not differ between them in these variables, nor regarding abdominal circumference. Parents of children with ASD and ADHD did not differ between themselves. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with ASD and ADHD are at a higher risk of overweight and obesity than children without developmental problems in the community.

Abstract
Objetivo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades psicométricas da versão em português da Escala de Responsividade Social-2 (ERS-2) para crianças e adolescentes com transtorno do espectro autista (TEA). Métodos A ERS-2 foi respondida pelos pais de 90 pacientes com TEA e 25 controles saudáveis. Análises quanto à validade discriminante, índices de confiabilidade e separação, de adequação e calibração dos itens pelo modelo Rasch foram realizadas. Resultados A ERS-2 demonstrou boa consistência interna (alfa de Cronbach = 0,952), um ponto de corte de 41, sensibilidade de 96,8%, especificidade de 100% e valor preditivo negativo de 99,9% para a identificação de TEA. As subescalas apresentaram, de forma geral, adequação ao modelo. No entanto, alguns itens se apresentaram pouco consistentes do ponto de vista estatístico (correlação item-total negativas e misfitting). O mapa de itens mostrou má cobertura da variável latente, especialmente no espectro mais leve do TEA. Conclusão Os resultados deste estudo mostraram que a versão em português da ERS-2 pode ser utilizada como ferramenta de triagem para o reconhecimento de TEA em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros. A escala pode ter versões futuras aprimoradas com a substituição dos itens com pior desempenho.

Abstract
Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a associação do sono, depressão e ansiedade em pacientes com migrânea. Métodos Cinquenta pacientes do sexo feminino, provenientes de um centro terciário de tratamento de cefaleias, com o diagnóstico de migrânea segundo os critérios da International Headache Society, foram incluídas neste estudo. As pacientes foram avaliadas com os seguintes instrumentos: Migraine Disability Assessment test (MIDAS), Headache Impact Test (HIT), Hospital Anxiety (HADS-A) and Depression Scale (HAD-D), Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh (IQSP) e Escala de Sonolência de Epworth (ESE). Resultados As pacientes apresentaram alta prevalência de sintomas de ansiedade (60%) e de depressão (42%), má qualidade do sono (80%) e sonolência diurna (36%). Foi demonstrada correlação positiva entre a gravidade dos sintomas de ansiedade e HIT (p = 0,018; ρ = 0,334), ESE (p = 0,002; ρ = 0,426) e IQSP (p = 0,002; ρ = 0,426). Correlação positiva também foi demonstrada entre a gravidade dos sintomas depressivos e HIT (p < 0,001; ρ = 0,532), ESE (p = 0,035; ρ = 0,299) e IQSP (p = 0,016, ρ = 0,34). Não houve associação entre a qualidade do sono, a sonolência diurna e a gravidade da migrânea. A pontuação na HAD-D foi o principal preditor de impacto grave da migrânea. Conclusão Apesar da alta frequência de distúrbios do sono, o principal fator relacionado ao impacto da migrânea foi a gravidade dos sintomas depressivos.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The etiopathogenesis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is largely unknown, but it seems to involve dysfunction in several biological systems. Among many possible biological pathways, the immune system has emerged as potentially involved. Recent studies have shown association between cytokines (molecules that mediate immune cell interaction) and ASD. Adipokines are cytokines secreted mainly by adipose tissue and may have systemic effects. The main objective of this study was to compare the plasma levels of three adipokines between patients with ASD and healthy controls. Another aim was to correlate the levels of these adipokines and the severity of autistic symptoms as measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). METHODS We collected plasma from 30 patients and 19 controls and measured the levels of adiponectin, leptin and resistin using a commercially available kit. We also used the SRS as a tool to assess the severity of autistic symptoms. RESULTS We found decreased levels of resistin, increased levels of leptin and unaltered levels of adiponectin in plasma from ASD subjects in comparison with controls. There was also a negative correlation between the levels of adiponectin and the severity of symptoms as assessed by the SRS. CONCLUSION There are significant changes in the plasma levels of adipokines from patients with ASDs. They suggest the occurrence of systemic changes in ASD and may be hallmarks of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study tested the hypothesis that the low-grade inflammation presented in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with expansion of activated T cells, and this activated state may be due to a lack of peripheral regulatory cells. METHODS Specifically, we investigated the distribution of monocytes and lymphocyte subsets, and investigated Th1/Th2/Th17 cytokines in plasma by flow cytometry. Twenty-one BD type I patients and 21 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited for this study. RESULTS BD patients had increased proportions of monocytes (CD14+). Regarding lymphocyte populations, BD patients presented reduced proportions of T cells (CD3+) and cytotoxic T cells (CD3+CD8+). BD patients also exhibited a higher percentage of activated T CD4+CD25+ cells, and a lower percentage of IL-10 expressing Treg cells. CONCLUSIONS Our data shed some light into the underlying mechanisms involved with the chronic low-grade inflammatory profile described in BD patients.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is unknown, and the immune system has been appointed to play an important role. The interleukin 33 (IL-33), a member of the IL-1, may act as an alarmin. This study aimed to evaluate plasma levels of IL-33, sST2, and IL-1β in 30 patients with ASD in comparison with 18 controls matched by gender, age and maternal age at childbirth. Patients did not differ from controls in IL-33, sST2, and IL-1β plasma levels. Alarmin levels were not correlated with age, and neither was influenced by clinical parameters. Our results undermine the role of IL-33/ST2 in ASD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluate the levels of a neurotrophic factor and some neurotrophins in the plasma of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). DESIGN This study enrolled 30 children with ASD and 19 healthy children. Plasma levels of the neurotrophins BDNF, NGF, NT3, NT4 and of the neurotrophic factor GDNF were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. SETTING The etiopathogenesis of ASD is largely unknown, but it seems to involve dysfunction in several biological systems. One of these systems comprises the neurotrophic factors, which are molecules involved in many processes in the central nervous system, including neuronal survival, synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Recent studies have shown association between neurotrophic factors and ASD. RESULTS No differences in plasma BDNF, NGF, NT3, NT4 and GDNF were found between ASD and control. Neurotrophic factors are not altered in ASD. CONCLUSIONS These molecules may play a minor role in ASD.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric condition associated with elevated frequency of clinical comorbidities and cognitive impairment. The neurobiology of BD is not completely understood. Recent evidence has implicated immune dysfunction in its physiopathology. Here, we review several data supporting the presence of immunological dysfunction in BD: (i) increased frequency of autoimmune diseases; (ii) distinct immune cell profile; (iii) release of/altered cytokines by stimulated mononuclear cells; (iv) elevated levels of circulating immune markers, and (v) inflammatory changes in the central nervous system. We also discuss the interplay between immunological dysfunction and neuroprogression in BD.

Abstract
Inflammatory mechanisms have been implicated in a series of neuropsychiatric conditions, including behavioral disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and affective disorders. Accumulating evidence also strongly suggests their involvement in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). This study aimed to evaluate plasma levels of inflammatory biomarkers, and their association with cognitive performance and other non-motor symptoms of PD. PD patients and control individuals were subjected to various psychometric tests, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI). Biomarker plasma levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). PD patients exhibited worse performance on MMSE and the programming task of FAB, and presented higher soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor (sTNFR) plasma levels than control individuals. Among PD patients, increased sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 concentrations were associated with poorer cognitive test scores. After multiple linear regression, sTNFR1 and education remained a significant predictor for FAB scores. Our data suggest that PD is associated with a proinflammatory profile, and sTNFRs are putative biomarkers of cognitive performance, with elevated sTNFR1 levels predicting poorer executive functioning in PD patients.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder of complex physiopathology that has been associated with a pro-inflammatory state. The aim of the present study was to investigate intracellular pathways associated with inflammatory signaling, assessing the phosphorylation levels of transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of euthymic BD patients and healthy controls. Fifteen BD euthymic type I patients, and 12 healthy controls matched by age and gender were enrolled in this study. All subjects were assessed by the Mini-International Neuropsychiatry Interview and the patients also by the Young Mania Rating Scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Phosphorylation levels of p65 NF-κB subunit, and MAPK ERK1/2, and p38 were assessed by Western blot and flow cytometry. Plasma cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL6, IL-10, IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-17A) were measured using cytometric bead arrays. Western blot and flow cytometry analyses showed increased phosphorylation levels of p65 NF-κB subunit, and MAPKs ERK1/2, and p38 in BD patients in euthymia in comparison with controls. BD patients presented increased pro-inflammatory cytokines levels in comparison with controls, and TNF-α correlated with the levels of phosphorylated p65 NF-κB. The present study found increased activation of MAPK and NF-κB pathways in BD patients, which is in line with a pro-inflammatory status.

Abstract
In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the levels of neurotrophins (NF) of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in different stages of treatment and their relationship with OCD clinical features. Forty patients with OCD and 40 healthy controls had Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), and Glial Cell-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GNDF) plasma levels measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Patients with OCD were further examined with the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS). Patients with OCD exhibited significantly lower levels of BDNF and significantly increased levels of NGF as compared to healthy controls. In OCD, statistically significant negative correlations between BDNF levels and number of working days lost per week were found. Additional analyses revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between both NGF and GDNF and severity of washing symptoms. Plasma levels of NF were not affected by age, age at OCD onset, gender, major depressive disorder, the relative dose of serotonin-reuptake inhibitors being prescribed, or the use of antipsychotics. Our findings suggest that patients with OCD may exhibit a particular NF profile, with functional impairment correlating with BDNF levels and severity of washing symptoms correlating with NGF and GDNF levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the plasma levels of cytokines in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as compared with healthy controls and to investigate whether there is any association between their concentrations and OCD clinical and therapeutic features. METHODS Forty patients with OCD and 40 healthy controls had their plasmas assessed for a range of cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, or TNF-α), chemokines (CCL2, CCL3, CCL11, CCL24, CXCL8, CXCL9, CXCL10), and other mediators (TNF soluble receptors sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Patients with OCD were further examined with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview, the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised, and the Beck Depression Inventory. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, patients with OCD exhibited significantly increased plasma levels of CCL3, CXCL8, sTNFR1, and sTNFR2. Among patients with OCD, there was a positive correlation between relative antidepressant dose and sTNFr2 levels. Furthermore, although the levels of sTNFR1 correlated positively with the severity of washing symptoms, CCL24 levels correlated negatively with the severity of hoarding. CONCLUSIONS The levels of certain immune markers are increased in adult patients with OCD and seem to vary according to predominant symptoms dimensions. Other studies are required to establish whether our findings truly reflect immunologic dysfunction in OCD or are the result of other hidden confounding factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE General paresis of the insane is a late and severe form of neurosyphilis characterized by nonspecific neuropsychiatric symptoms. There are a limited number of case reports of mood disorders presenting in neurosyphilis, with depressive illness being the most common. METHODS We performed a literature review of case reports of secondary bipolar disorder induced by syphilitic infection. RESULTS Herein reported is a case of a 53-year-old woman who initially presented with symptoms of mania and depression, mimicking bipolar disorder, but was subsequently diagnosed with general paresis of the insane. CONCLUSION The present case report emphasizes that if a substantial delay occurs in syphilis diagnosis and management, the patient may have a very poor prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the old Kraepelinean concept that bipolar disorder (BD) does not evolve with cognitive decline, the presence of cognitive impairment, especially executive dysfunction has been recognized in BD patients. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and pro-inflammatory molecules are important contributors to the pathophysiology of BD, and imbalance in peripheral levels of these molecules may be implicated in the cognitive decline observed in BD patients. We aimed to investigate the executive performance of BD type I euthymic patients and its relation with the plasma levels of BDNF, TNF-α and its related soluble receptors (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2). METHODS We evaluated executive functioning through the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB). Plasma levels of BDNF, TNF-α, sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 25 euthymic type I BD patients and 25 age and gender matched healthy controls. RESULTS BD patients had an impairment in executive functioning (p<0.006), particularly sensitivity of interference (p=0.02), inhibitory control (p=0.02), and increased BDNF plasma levels (p=0.001) in comparison with controls. Plasma levels of TNF-α were correlated with inhibitory control in BD patients (ρ=0.50, p=0.02) while motor programming was negatively correlated with sTNFR2 plasma levels (ρ=-0.47, p=0.02) in controls. Executive function correlated with age and MMSE, but not with BDNF, neither was influenced by psychiatric and clinical comorbidities nor medications in use. CONCLUSION BDNF is altered in BD but do not correlate with executive functioning.

Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is the most widely distributed neurotrophin in the CNS, where it plays several pivotal roles in synaptic plasticity and neuronal survival. As a consequence, BDNF has become a key target in the physiopathology of several neurological and psychiatric diseases. Recent studies have consistently reported altered levels of BDNF in the circulation (i.e., serum or plasma) of patients with major depression, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. Correlations between serum BDNF levels and affective, cognitive and motor symptoms have also been described. BDNF appears to be an unspecific biomarker of neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by neurodegenerative changes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neuro-trophins are critically involved in neuro-plasticity, the impairment of which is a major role-player in bipolar disorder (BD), and their altered levels have been recently advocated in the patho-physiology of this affective malady. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the plasma levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) in BD patients in comparison with control subjects. METHODS Forty-nine BD type-I individuals (30 in mania and 19 in euthymia) and 36 healthy controls were assessed by Mini-plus, Young mania and Hamilton depression rating scales. NGF levels were detected by ELISA. RESULTS Plasma NGF concentrations were decreased in BD patients when compared to that seen with controls. BD individuals in mania had lower NGF levels than euthymic patients or controls. NGF levels were negatively correlated with the severity of mania. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to evaluate NGF levels in BD patients, providing further support to the hypothesis of impaired neuro-plasticity in BD. These data also suggest that NGF measurement could be used for the biological marker for manic state.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the plasma levels of TNF-α and its soluble receptors (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2) in BD patients in mania and euthymia in comparison with control subjects. We evaluated 53 BD patients (34 in mania and 19 in euthymia) and 38 healthy subjects. All subjects were assessed by the Mini-International Neuropsychiatry Interview (MINI-Plus). Contexto: O transtorno bipolar tipo I está comumente associado a comorbidades clínicas e psiquiátricas, mas ainda há poucos dados disponíveis sobre pacientes brasileiros. Objetivos: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a prevalência de comorbidades clínicas e psiquiátricas em uma amostra brasileira de pacientes bipolares tipo I. O objetivo secundário foi investigar as associações de características clínico-demográficas e comorbidades com tentativas de suicídio. Métodos: Foram incluídos neste estudo 94 pacientes bipolares tipo I. O diagnóstico psiquiátrico foi determinado utilizando-se a avaliação Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-Plus). O diagnóstico de comorbidades clínicas foi baseado na história clínica e no acompanhamento de clínicos gerais. Resultados: As comorbidades mais prevalentes nos pacientes bipolares foram: transtorno de ansiedade generalizada (19,20%), dependência de substâncias (43,60%), hipertensão arterial (29,80%), diabetes mellitus (17,00%), dislipidemia (22,30%) e hipotireoidismo (19,10%). Não foram encontradas diferenças estatísticas em relação às características demográficas ou à prevalência de comorbidades nos grupos com e sem tentativa de suicídio. Conclusão: Pacientes bipolares atendidos em serviço psiquiátrico apresentam elevada prevalência de comorbidades psiquiátricas e clínicas. Nessa população, tentativas de suicídio não se associam com a presença de comorbidades ou características demográficas.

Abstract
Recent data indicate that neurotrophins may play a role in the physiopathology of bipolar disorder (BD) and may be useful as biomarkers of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the plasma concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in BD patients, and to correlate their levels with clinical parameters. BDNF was measured in plasma from 53 BD type I subjects (34 during mania and 19 during euthymia) and 38 healthy controls by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA). Patients were assessed by a structured clinical interview (Mini-plus), Young mania and Hamilton depression rating scales. Plasma BDNF levels were significantly increased in patients with mania (P</=0.001) and euthymia (P</=0.001) when compared with controls, but did not correlate with any clinical parameters. BDNF concentration was higher in BD patients with 10 or more years of disease. BDNF plasma levels were increased in BD patients, mainly in those with a longer course of disease. In line with previous studies, it is conceivable that BDNF may play a role in the pathophysiology of BD.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: A SCoRS é uma medida coprimária de avaliação da cognição na esquizofrenia, baseada em entrevista, relacionada à performance cognitiva e ao funcionamento no mundo real. Em sua versão original, envolve entrevistas com pacientes e informantes. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi buscar evidências de validade de construto convergente e de fidedignidade da versão brasileira da SCoRS (SCoRS-Br) em contextos sem disponibilidade de informantes qualificados. MÉTODO: Foram incluídos 49 pacientes com diagnóstico de esquizofrenia, segundo o DSM-IV. A validação de construto convergente foi realizada utilizando-se o teste R1 e o Miniexame do Estado Mental (MEEM) como instrumentos-padrão. Estimativas de correlação foram avaliadas pelo método de Pearson. Avaliou-se, ainda, a consistência interna da SCoRS. RESULTADOS: A correlação de Pearson entre os resultados da SCoRS sob a perspectiva do entrevistador e os resultados do teste R1 mostrou-se baixa, mas significativa. O coeficiente de Cronbach foi de 0,8829 para a SCoRS examinador e 0,8468 para a SCoRS paciente e o split-half foi de 0,811 e 0,806, respectivamente. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados evidenciam a validade convergente e fidedignidade da SCoRS, mesmo empregada sem a utilização de informantes. Estudos são necessários para a investigação dos demais critérios de validação.

Abstract
As alterações cognitivas são características centrais na esquizofrenia. Elas permanecem relativamente estáveis durante todo o curso da doença, não sendo secundárias a outros sintomas ou a efeitos colaterais de psicofármacos. Estão diretamente ligadas a prejuízo funcional e a pior qualidade de vida dos pacientes. Diversos estudos vêm sendo realizados no sentido de caracterizar as principais alterações cognitivas na esquizofrenia, identificar suas bases neurobiológicas e padronizar instrumentos de pesquisa, fundamentais para o advento de novos alvos para intervenções farmacológicas na esquizofrenia. O objetivo deste trabalho foi fazer uma atualização sobre o assunto.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the polarity of the first mood episode may be a marker for suicidal behavior, particularly the violent subtype. METHOD: One hundred and sixty-eight patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder (DSM-IV) were grouped according to type of first episode: depression or manic/hypomanic. Groups were compared for demographic and clinical variables. We performed logistic regression in order to test the association between first episode polarity and suicidal behavior. RESULTS: We found that depressed patients have a lifetime history of more suicide attempts. However, univariate analysis of number of suicide attempts showed that the best model fits the bipolar II subtype (mean square = 15.022; p = 0.010) and lifetime history of psychotic episodes (mean square = 17.359; p = 0.021). Subgrouping the suicide attempts by subtype (violent or non-violent) revealed that manic/hypomanic patients had a greater tendency toward attempting violent suicide (21.2 vs. 14.7%, X² = 7.028, p = 0.03). Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed this result. CONCLUSION: Depressed patients had more suicide attempts over time, which could be explained by the higher prevalence of bipolar II subtype in this group, whereas manic/hypomanic patients had a lifelong history of more frequent violent suicide attempts, not explained by any of the variables studied. Our results support the evidence that non-violent suicide attempters and violent suicide attempters tend to belong to different phenotypic groups.
