Dual disintegration of microalgae biomass for cost-effective biomethane production: Energy and cost assessment

The present study aims to enhance the biomethane production potential of microalgae via a dual disintegration process. During this process, the microalgae biomass was firstly subjected to cell wall weakening by thermochemical disintegration (TC) (50 to 80 °C), pH adjustment with alkali, NaOH (6 to 10) and time (0 to 10 min) and, secondly, by bacterial disintegration (BD). TC-BD disintegration was comparatively higher (33 %) than BD (24 %), TC (8.5 %), and control (7 %). A more significant VFA accumulation of 2816 mg/L was recorded for TC-BD. Similarly, a greater substrate anaerobic biodegradability was achieved in TC-BD (0.32 g COD /g COD) than BD (0.21 g COD /g COD), TC alone (0.09 gCOD/g COD) and control (0.08 g COD /g COD), respectively. The TC-BD achieves a positive net profit and an energy ratio of + 0.12 GJ/d and 1.03. The proposed dual disintegration has a promising future for commercialization.

Sustainable power production from petrochemical industrial effluent using dual chambered microbial fuel cell

Dual chambered microbial fuel cell (DMFC) is an advanced and effective treatment technology in wastewater treatment. The current work has made an effort to treat petrochemical industrial wastewater (PWW) as a DMFC substrate for power generation and organic substance removal. Investigating the impact of organic load (OL) on organic reduction and electricity generation is the main objective of this study. At the OL of 1.5 g COD/L, the highest total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal efficiency of 88%, soluble oxygen demand (SCOD) removal efficiency of 80% and total suspended solids (TSS) removal efficiency of 71% were seen, respectively. In the same optimum condition of 1.5 g COD/L, the highest current and power density of about 270 mW/m2 and 376 mA/m2 were also observed. According to the results of this study, using high-strength organic wastewater in DMFC can assist in addressing the issue of the petrochemical industries and minimize the energy demand.

Green chemical and hybrid enzymatic pretreatments for lignocellulosic biorefineries: Mechanism and challenges

The greener chemical and enzymatic pretreatments for lignocellulosic biomasses are portraying a crucial role owing to their recalcitrant nature. Traditional pretreatments lead to partial degradation of lignin and hemicellulose moieties from the pretreated biomass. But it still restricts the enzyme accessibility for the digestibility towards the celluloses and the interaction of lignin-enzymes, nonproductively. Moreover, incursion of certain special chemical treatments and other lignin sulfonation techniques to the enzymatic pretreatment (hybrid enzymatic pretreatment) enhances the lignin structural modification, solubilization of the hemicelluloses and both saccharification and fermentation processes (SAF). This article concentrates on recent developments in various chemical and hybrid enzymatic pretreatments on biomass materials with their mode of activities. Furthermore, the issues on strategies of the existing pretreatments towards their industrial applications are highlighted, which could lead to innovative ideas to overcome the challenges and give guideline for the researchers towards the lignocellulosic biorefineries.

A review on the lignocellulosic derived biochar-based catalyst in wastewater remediation: Advanced treatment technologies and machine learning tools

Wastewater disposal in the ecosystem affects aquatic and human life, which necessitates the removal of the contaminants. Eliminating wastewater contaminants using biochar produced through the thermal decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is sustainable. Due to its high specific surface area, porous structure, oxygen functional groups, and low cost, biochar has emerged as an alternate contender in catalysis. Various innovative advanced technologies were combined with biochar for effective wastewater treatment. This review examines the use of LCB for the synthesis of biochar along with its activation methods. It also elaborates on using advanced biochar-based technologies in wastewater treatment and the mechanism for forming oxidizing species. The research also highlights the use of machine learning in pollutant removal and identifies the obstacles of biochar-based catalysts in both real-time and cutting-edge technologies. Probable and restrictions for further exploration are discussed.

Effect of thermal-calcium peroxide mediated exopolymer release on disperser pre-treatment for efficient anaerobic digestion

The present study aimed to improve the hydrolysis potential of paper mill sludge through a two-phase disintegration process. In Particular, attention was focused on removal of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) i.e. deflocculation of sludge in order to improve the efficiency of subsequent disperser disintegration. During deflocculation, carbohydrate, protein and deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA) were used as assessment parameters. During disintegration, soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and suspended solids (SS) reduction were used as assessment index to evaluate the efficiency of disintegration. A greater EPS removal was attained while deflocculating the sludge at calcium peroxide dosage of 0.05 g/g suspended solids (SS) and at a temperature of 70 °C. When comparing the disintegrated samples, a clear variation was noted in deflocculated and disintegrated sludge (19.2%) than the disintegrated sludge alone (13.5%). This clearly shows the need for deflocculation prior to disintegration. Likewise, a higher biomethane production of 0.214 L/g COD was achieved in deflocculated and disintegrated sludge than the pretreated sludge alone. Deflocculation reduces sludge management cost from 170 USD (Disperser alone (D alone disintegration)) to 51 USD (Thermal calcium peroxide mediated-Disperser (TCaO2-D disintegration), indicating the efficiency of the proposed disintegration.

Microplastics as emergent contaminants in landfill leachate: Source, potential impact and remediation technologies

A significant amount of plastic waste is generated each year on a global scale, in which the maximum quantity of plastic waste is typically dumped in landfills in various parts of the world. Moreover, dumping plastic waste in landfills cannot address the issue of proper disposal; it simply delays the process. Exploiting waste resources entails environmental hazards because plastic wastes buried in landfills gradually break down into Microplastics (MPs) due to physical, chemical, and biological effects. The possibility of landfill leachate as a source of MPs in the environment has not received much attention. Without systematic treatment, MPs in leachate increase the risk to human health and environmental health since they contain dangerous and toxic pollutants and antibiotic resistance genes transmitted by leachate vectors. Due to their severe environmental risks, MPs are now widely recognized as emerging pollutants. Therefore, the composition of MPs in landfill leachate and the interaction of MPs with other hazardous contaminants are summarised in this review. The available potential mitigation or treatment methods of MPs in landfill leachate as of now, along with the drawbacks and challenges of the present leachate treatment for eliminating MPs, are described in this review. Since it is unclear how MPs will be removed from the current leachate facilities, it is crucial to develop innovative treatment facilities as quickly as possible. Finally, the areas that require more research to provide complete solutions to the persistent problem of plastic debris are discussed.

Combined sodium citrate and ultrasonic pretreatment of waste activated sludge for cost effective production of biogas

This study aimed to pretreat the waste activated sludge (WAS) by ultrasonication in an energy efficient way by combining sodium citrate with ultrasonic pretreatment at 0.03 g/g suspended solids (SS) of dosage. The ultrasonic pretreatment was done at various (20-200 W) power levels, sludge concentration (7 to 30 g/L), sodium citrate dosages (0.01 to 0.2 g/g SS). An elevated COD solubilization of 26.07 ± 0.6 % was achieved by combined pretreatment at a treatment time of 10 min, ultrasonic power level of 160 W when compared to individual ultrasonic pretreatment (18.6 ± 0.5 %). A higher biomethane yield of 0.26 ± 0.009 L/g COD was achieved in sodium citrate combined ultrasonic pretreatment (SCUP) than ultrasonic pretreatment (UP) 0.145 ± 0.006 L/g COD. Almost 50% of the energy can be saved through SCUP when compared to UP. Future study evaluating SCUP in continuous mode anaerobic digestion is vital.

Microbial Exopolysaccharide Composites in Biomedicine and Healthcare: Trends and Advances

Microbial exopolysaccharides (EPSs), e.g., xanthan, dextran, gellan, curdlan, etc., have significant applications in several industries (pharma, food, textiles, petroleum, etc.) due to their biocompatibility, nontoxicity, and functional characteristics. However, biodegradability, poor cell adhesion, mineralization, and lower enzyme activity are some other factors that might hinder commercial applications in healthcare practices. Some EPSs lack biological activities that make them prone to degradation in ex vivo, as well as in vivo environments. The blending of EPSs with other natural and synthetic polymers can improve the structural, functional, and physiological characteristics, and make the composites suitable for a diverse range of applications. In comparison to EPS, composites have more mechanical strength, porosity, and stress-bearing capacity, along with a higher cell adhesion rate, and mineralization that is required for tissue engineering. Composites have a better possibility for biomedical and healthcare applications and are used for 2D and 3D scaffold fabrication, drug carrying and delivery, wound healing, tissue regeneration, and engineering. However, the commercialization of these products still needs in-depth research, considering commercial aspects such as stability within ex vivo and in vivo environments, the presence of biological fluids and enzymes, degradation profile, and interaction within living systems. The opportunities and potential applications are diverse, but more elaborative research is needed to address the challenges. In the current article, efforts have been made to summarize the recent advancements in applications of exopolysaccharide composites with natural and synthetic components, with special consideration of pharma and healthcare applications.

Augmentation in polyhydroxybutyrate and biogas production from waste activated sludge through mild sonication induced thermo-fenton disintegration

In this study, an innovative approach was developed to enhance the hydrolysis through phase-separated pretreatment by removing exopolymeric substances via mild sonication followed by thermo-Fenton disintegration. The exopolymeric substances fragmentation was enhanced at the sonic specific energy input of 2.58 kJ/kg total solids. After exopolymeric substance removal, the disintegration of biomass by thermo-Fenton yield the solubilization of 29.8 % at Fe²⁺:H₂O₂ dosage and temperature of 0.009:0.036 g/g suspended solids and 80 °C as compared to thermo-Fenton alone disintegration. The polyhydroxybutyrate content of 93.1 % was accumulated by Bacillus aryabhattai at the optimum time of 42 h, while providing 70 % (v/v) pre-treated supernatant as a carbon source under nutrient-limiting condition. Moreover, the biogas generation of 0.187 L/g chemical oxygen demand was achieved using settled pretreated sludge. The pretreated sludge sample thus served as a carbon source for polyhydroxybutyrate producers as well as substrate for biogas production.

A review on current advances in the energy and cost effective pretreatments of algal biomass: Enhancement in liquefaction and biofuel recovery

The main downside of utilizing algal biomass for biofuel production is the rigid cell wall which confines the availability of soluble organics to hydrolytic microbes during biofuel conversion. This constraint reduces the biofuel production efficiency of algal biomass. On the other hand, presenting various pretreatment methods before biofuel production affords cell wall disintegration and enhancement in biofuel generation. The potential of pretreatment methods chiefly relies on the extent of biomass liquefaction, energy, and cost demand. In this review, different pretreatments employed to disintegrate algal biomass were conferred in depth with detailed information on their efficiency in enhancing liquefaction and biofuel yield for pilot-scale implementation. Based on this review, it has been concluded that combinative and phase-separated pretreatments provide virtual input in enhancing the biofuel generation based on liquefaction potential, energy, and cost. Future studies should focus on decrement in cost and energy requirement of pretreatment in depth.

Technological advances in the production of carotenoids and their applications- A critical review

Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments that are widely distributed in algae, fungi, bacteria, and plants. Carotenoids play a significant role in the food, feed, cosmetic, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. These pigments are effectively considered as a health-promoting compounds, which are widely used in our daily diet to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, acute lung injury, cataracts, neural disorders, etc. In this context, this review paper demonstrates the synthesis of carotenoids and their potential application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. However, the demand for carotenoid production is increasing overtime, and the extraction and production are expensive and technically challenging. The recent developments in carotenoid biosynthesis, and key challenges, bottlenecks, and future perspectives were also discussed to enhance the circular bioeconomy.

Algal biomass to biohydrogen: Pretreatment, influencing factors, and conversion strategies

Hydrogen has gained attention as an alternative source of energy because of its non-polluting nature as on combustion it produces only water. Biological methods are eco-friendly and have benefits in waste management and hydrogen production simultaneously. The use of algal biomass as feedstock in dark fermentation is advantageous because of its low lignin content, high growth rate, and carbon-fixation ability. The major bottlenecks in biohydrogen production are its low productivity and high production costs. To overcome these issues, many advances in the area of biomass pretreatment to increase sugar release, understanding of algal biomass composition, and development of fermentation strategies for the complete recovery of nutrients are ongoing. Recently, mixed substrate fermentation, multistep fermentation, and the use of nanocatalysts to improve hydrogen production have increased. This review article evaluates the current progress in algal biomass pretreatment, key factors, and possible solutions for increasing hydrogen production.

Enhanced biohydrogen generation through calcium peroxide engendered efficient ultrasonic disintegration of waste activated sludge in low temperature environment

Waste activated sludge is a renewable source for biohydrogen production, whereas the presence of complex biopolymers limits the hydrolysis step during this process, and thus pretreatment is required to disintegrate the sludge biomass. In this study, the feasibility of utilizing waste activated sludge to produce biohydrogen by improving the solubilization by means of thermo CaO₂ engendered sonication disintegration (TCP-US) was studied. The optimized condition for extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) dissociation was obtained at the CaO₂ dosage of 0.05 g/g SS at 70 °C. The maximum disintegration after EPS removal was achieved at the sonic specific energy input of 1612.8 kJ/kg TS with the maximum solubilization and SS reduction of 23.7% and 18.14%, respectively, which was higher than the US alone pretreatment. Thus, this solubilization yields higher biohydrogen production of 114.3 mLH₂/gCOD in TCP-US sample.

Production and recovery of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from waste streams - A review

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are the more attractive sustainable green plastic, and it has the potential to replace petroleum-based plastics (PBP) in the global market. Recently, most of the developed and developing countries have banned the use of traditional PBP. This increases the demand for green plastic production and positively impacts the global market. Producing green plastic from various waste streams such as whey, animal, and crude glycerol will be eco-friendly and cost-effective. However, the factors influencing the environmental sustainability of PHA production from different waste streams are still unclear. This review could be reinforced concrete to researchers to gather deep knowledge on techno-economic analysis, life-cycle assessment, environmental and ecological risks caused during PHA production from different waste streams.

Algal biorefinery towards decarbonization: Economic and environmental consideration

Algae biomass contains various biological elements, including lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, making it a viable feedstock for manufacturing biofuels. However, the biggest obstacle to commercializing algal biofuels is their high production costs, primarily related to an algae culture. The extraction of additional high value added bioproducts from algal biomass is thus required to increase the economic viability of producing algae biofuel. This study aims to discuss the economic benefits of a zero-carbon economy and an environmentally sustainable algae resource in decarbonizing the environment through the manufacture of algal-based biofuels from algae biomass for a range of potential uses. In addition, research on the algae biorefineries, with an emphasis on case studies for various cultivation methods, as well as the commercialization of biofuel and bioenergy. Overall, the algal biorefinery offers fresh potential for synthesizing various products.

Phase separated pretreatment strategies for enhanced waste activated sludge disintegration in anaerobic digestion: An outlook and recent trends

A significant ecological problem was developed on disposing the enormous amounts of waste activated sludge (WAS) produced by traditional wastewater treatment. There have been various attempts recently originated to develop innovative methods for substantial sludge treatment. The most frequently used approach for treating sludge to produces methane and reduces sludge is anaerobic treatment. The hydrolysis phase in WAS limits the breakdown of complex macrobiotic compounds. The presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in biomass prevents the substrate from being hydrolyzed. Enhancing substrate hydrolysis involves removal of EPS preceded by phase separated pretreatment. Hence, a critical assessment of various phase separated pretreatment that has a remarkable effect on the anaerobic digestion process was documented in detail. Moreover, the economic viability and energy requirement of this treatment process was also discussed. Perspectives and recommendations for methane production were also provided to attain effectual sludge management.

Dispersion assisted pretreatment for enhanced anaerobic biodegradability and biogas recovery -strategies and applications

Disperser assisted homogenization is a promising mechanical based disintegration process to improve the substrate biodegradability and biogas recovery from biomass. During dispersion, the extent of liquefaction relies on the dispersion parameters and biomass properties. Hence, assessment of the optimal parameters varies with type of disperser and biomass. Dispersion assisted homogenization of some biomass such as sludge is not only studied in lab scale but also investigated in full scale plants providing positive outcome. For instance, the large-scale investigation of disperser homogenization has attained nearly 40-50 percent increment in bioenergy recovery. However, research gaps in terms of energy and cost efficiency still exists. This review paper outlines the impact of disperser parameters, its efficiency in biomass disintegration and biogas recovery. It has been proposed to combine homogenization process in the bioenergy generation to investigate the energy and cost efficiency of the entire process.

Bioelectrochemical systems in aid of sustainable biorefineries for the production of value-added products and resource recovery from wastewater: A critical review and future perspectives

Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have the potential to be used in a variety of applications such as waste biorefinery, pollutants removal, CO₂ capture, and the electrosynthesis of clean and renewable biofuels or byproducts, among others. In contrast, many technical challenges need to be addressed before BES can be scaled up and put into real-world applications. Utilizing BES, this review article presents a state-of-the-art overall view of crucial concepts and the most recent innovative results and achievements acquired from the BES system. Special attention is placed on a hybrid approach for product recovery and wastewater treatment. There is also a comprehensive overview of waste biorefinery designs that are included. In conclusion, the significant obstacles and technical concerns found throughout the BES studies are discussed, and suggestions and future requirements for the virtual usage of the BES concept in actual waste treatment are outlined.

Biohydrogen production from waste activated sludge through thermochemical mechanical pretreatment

Generation of excess sludge in large quantities from wastewater treatment plant face huge problem in terms of handling and management, whereas it possess higher organic and inorganic constituents and thus it can be used as a feedstock for the generation of biofuel with proper disintegration techniques.In this regard, an effort has been made in this study to combine thermo-chemo-disperser pretreatment for the disintegration of paper mill waste activated sludge for the production of biohydrogen in an energy efficient way. These combinations of thermo-chemo-disperser (TCD) tend to be effective in disintegration and possess 24.3% COD solubilization and higher suspended solid reduction of 18.8% at the specific energy usage of 2081.82 kJ/kg TS. The pretreatment with TCD technique shows the biohydrogen production of 120.2 mLH₂/gCOD as compared to thermochemically pretreated alone (73.6 mLH₂/gCOD) sample. Thus, the combined process was considered to be potentially effective in sludge disintegration.

Advances in algal biomass pretreatment and its valorisation into biochemical and bioenergy by the microbial processes

Urbanization and pollution are the major issues of the current time own to the exhaustive consumption of fossil fuels which have a detrimental effect on the nation's economies and air quality due to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and shortage of energy reserves. Algae, an autotrophic organism provides a green substitute for energy as well as commercial products. Algal extracts become an efficient source for bioactive compounds having anti-microbial, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancerous potential. Besides the conventional approach, residual biomass from any algal-based process might act as a renewable substrate for fermentation. Likewise, lignocellulosic biomass, algal biomass can also be processed for sugar recovery by different pre-treatment strategies like acid and alkali hydrolysis, microwave, ionic liquid, and ammonia fiber explosion, etc. Residual algal biomass hydrolysate can be used as a feedstock to produce bioenergy (biohydrogen, biogas, methane) and biochemicals (organic acids, polyhydroxyalkanoates) via microbial fermentation.

Mild hydrogen peroxide interceded bacterial disintegration of waste activated sludge for efficient biomethane production

Regardless of the issue of sludge management all over the world, the role of phase separated pretreatment prior to anaerobic digestion are more promising in terms of energy efficient biomethane production. However, the effect of phase separated pretreatment (dissociation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) followed by biological pretreatment in a two-step process) must be sensibly evaluated from various perceptions to consolidate its effectiveness in sludge management and bioenergy recovery. In this study, mild hydrogen peroxide induced bacterial pretreatment (H₂O₂-BP) was employed as phase separated pretreatment to investigate the effectiveness of EPS dissociation prior to biological pretreatment on sludge solubilization and biomethanation. The novelty of this study is the application of mild dosage of hydrogen peroxide at sludge pH for the removal of EPS layer with lesser formation of recalcitrant substances which thereby enhances the disintegration by enzyme secreting bacterial and methane generation. The outcome confirmed that the higher EPS dissociation was achieved at H₂O₂ dosage of 8 μL per 100 mL of sludge with negligible cell lysis. An extractable EPS of 172.8 mg/L was obtained after H₂O₂ treatment. The higher sCOD solubilization of 22% and the suspended solid reduction of 17.14% were achieved in hydrogen peroxide followed by bacterial pretreatment (H₂O₂-BP) as compared to of bacterial pretreatment alone (BP) (solubilization-11% and suspended solids reduction-9.3%) and control (C) sludges (solubilization-5% and suspended solids reduction-4.3%). The methane generation for H₂O₂-BP sludge is 0.174 L/gCOD which is higher than BP (0.078 L/gCOD,) and C sludge (0.02175 L/gCOD). A higher biomass solubilization and increased biomethanation in H₂O₂-BP revealed that dissociation of EPS prior to bacterial pretreatment increases the surface area for bacterial pretreatment facilitating easier accessibility of substrate and enhanced biomethanation.

Surfactant induced microwave disintegration for enhanced biohydrogen production from macroalgae biomass: Thermodynamics and energetics

This research work aimed about the enhanced bio-hydrogen production from marine macro algal biomass (Ulva reticulate) through surfactant induced microwave disintegration (SIMD). Microwave disintegration (MD) was performed by varying the power from 90 to 630 W and time from 0 to 40 min. The maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilisation of 27.9% was achieved for MD at the optimal power (40%). A surfactant, ammonium dodecyl sulphate (ADS) is introduced in optimal power of MD which enhanced the solubilisation to 34.2% at 0.0035 g ADS/g TS dosage. The combined SIMD pretreatment significantly reduce the treatment time and increases the COD solubilisation when compared to MD. Maximum hydrogen yield of 54.9 mL H₂ /g COD was observed for SIMD than other samples. In energy analysis, it was identified that SIMD was energy efficient process compared to others since SIMD achieved energy ratio of 1.04 which is higher than MD (0.38).

Current advances and future outlook on pretreatment techniques to enhance biosolids disintegration and anaerobic digestion: A critical review

Waste activated sludge (biosolids) treatment is intensely a major problem around the globe. Anaerobic treatment is indeed a fundamental and most popular approach to convert organic wastes into bioenergy, which could be used as a carbon-neutral renewable and clean energy thus eradicating pathogens and eliminating odor. Due to the sheer intricate biosolid matrix (such as exopolymeric substances) and rigid cell structure, hydrolysis becomes a rate-limiting phase. Numerous different pretreatment strategies were proposed to hasten this rate-limiting hydrolysis and enhance the productivity of anaerobic digestion. This study discusses an overview of previous scientific advances in pretreatment options for enhancing biogas production. In addition, the limitations addressed along with the effects of inhibitors in biosolids towards biogas production and strategies to overcome discussed. This review elaborated the cost analysis of various pretreatment methods towards the scale-up process. This review abridges the existing research on augmenting AD efficacy by recognizing the associated knowledge gaps and suggesting future research.

Impact of light on microalgal photosynthetic microbial fuel cells and removal of pollutants by nanoadsorbent biopolymers: Updates, challenges and innovations

Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) with microalgae have huge potential for treating wastewater while simultaneously converting light energy into electrical energy. The efficiency of such cells directly depends on algal growth, which depends on light intensity. Higher light intensity results in increased potential as well as enhancement in generation of biomass rich in biopolymers. Such biopolymers are produced either by microbes at anode and algae at cathode or vice versa. The biopolymers recovered from these biological sources can be added in wastewater alone or in combination with nanomaterials to act as nanoadsorbents. These nanoadsorbents further increase the efficiency of PMFC by removing the pollutants like metals and dyes. In this review firstly the effect of different light intensities on the growth of microalgae, importance of diatoms in a PMFC and their impact on PMFCs efficiencies have been narrated. Secondly recovery of biopolymers from different biological sources and their role in removal of metals, dyes along with their impact on circular bioeconomy have been discussed. Thereafter bottlenecks and future perspectives in this field of research have been narrated.

Process optimisation for production and recovery of succinic acid using xylose-rich hydrolysates by Actinobacillus succinogenes

Succinic acid (SA) is a top platform chemical obtainable from biomass. The current study evaluated the potential of Actinobacillus succinogenes for SA production using xylose-rich hemicellulosic fractions of two important lignocellulosic feedstocks, olive pits (OP) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and the results were compared with pure xylose. Initial experiments were conducted in shake flask followed by batch and fed-batch cultivation in bioreactor. Further separation of SA from the fermented broth was carried out by adapting direct crystallisation method. During fed-batch culture, maximum SA titers of 36.7, 33.6, and 28.7 g/L was achieved on pure xylose, OP and SCB hydrolysates, respectively, with same conversion yield of 0.27 g/g. The recovery yield of SA accumulated on pure xylose, OP and SCB hydrolysates was 79.1, 76.5, and 75.2%, respectively. The results obtained are of substantial value and pave the way for development of sustainable SA biomanufacturing in an integrated biorefinery.

Recent advances in commercial biorefineries for lignocellulosic ethanol production: Current status, challenges and future perspectives

Cellulosic ethanol production has received global attention to use as transportation fuels with gasoline blending virtue of carbon benefits and decarbonization. However, due to changing feedstock composition, natural resistance, and a lack of cost-effective pretreatment and downstream processing, contemporary cellulosic ethanol biorefineries are facing major sustainability issues. As a result, we've outlined the global status of present cellulosic ethanol facilities, as well as main roadblocks and technical challenges for sustainable and commercial cellulosic ethanol production. Additionally, the article highlights the technical and non-technical barriers, various R&D advancements in biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation strategies that have been deliberated for low-cost sustainable fuel ethanol. Moreover, selection of a low-cost efficient pretreatment method, process simulation, unit integration, state-of-the-art in one pot saccharification and fermentation, system microbiology/ genetic engineering for robust strain development, and comprehensive techno-economic analysis are all major bottlenecks that must be considered for long-term ethanol production in the transportation sector.

Impact of novel deflocculant ZnO/Chitosan nanocomposite film in disperser pretreatment enhancing energy efficient anaerobic digestion: Parameter assessment and cost exploration

This paper proposed to interpret the novel method of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) removal in advance to sludge disintegration to enrich bioenergy generation. The sludge has been subjected to deflocculation using Zinc oxide/Chitosan nanocomposite film (ZCNF) and achieved 98.97% of solubilization which enhance the solubilization of organics. The obtained result revealed that higher solubilization efficiency of 23.3% was attained at an optimal specific energy of 2186 kJ/kg TS and disintegration duration of 30 min. The deflocculated sludge showed 8.2% higher solubilization than the flocculated sludge emancipates organics in the form of 1.64 g/L of SCOD thereby enhancing the methane generation. The deflocculated sludge produces methane of 230 mL/g COD attained overall solid reduction of 55.5% however, flocculated and control sludge produces only 182.25 mL/g COD and 142.8 mL/g COD of methane. Based on the energy, mass and cost analysis, the deflocculated sludge saved 94.1% of energy than the control and obtained the net cost of 5.59 $/t which is comparatively higher than the flocculated and control sludge.

Algal-based system for removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater: A review

The bioremediation of emerging pollutants in wastewater via algal biotechnology has been emerging as a cost-effective and low-energy input technological solution. However, the algal bioremediation technology is still not fully developed at a commercial level. The development of different technologies and new strategies to cater specific needs have been studied. The existence of multiple emerging pollutants and the selection of microalgal species is a major concern. The rate of algal bioremediation is influenced by various factors, including accidental contaminations and operational conditions in the pilot-scale studies. Algal-bioremediation can be combined with existing treatment technologies for efficient removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater. This review mainly focuses on algal-bioremediation systems for wastewater treatment and pollutant removal, the impact of emerging pollutants in the environment, selection of potential microalgal species, mechanisms involved, and challenges in removing emerging pollutants using algal-bioremediation systems.

Algae biorefinery: a promising approach to promote microalgae industry and waste utilization

Microalgae have a number of intriguing characteristics that make them a viable raw material aimed at usage in a variety of applications when refined using a bio-refining process. They offer unique capabilities that allow them to be used in biotechnology-related applications. As a result, this review explores how to increase the extent to which microalgae may be integrated with various additional biorefinery uses in order to improve their maintainability. In this study, the use of microalgae as potential animal feed, manure, medicinal, cosmeceutical, ecological, and other biotechnological uses is examined in its entirety. It also includes information on the boundaries, openings, and improvements of microalgae and the possibilities of increasing the range of microalgae through techno-economic analysis. According to the findings of this review, financing supported research and shifting the focus of microalgal investigations from biofuels production to biorefinery co-products can help guarantee that they remain a viable resource. Furthermore, innovation collaboration is unavoidable if one wishes to avoid the high cost of microalgae biomass handling. This review is expected to be useful in identifying the possible role of microalgae in biorefinery applications in the future.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates synthesis using acidogenic fermentative effluents

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are natural polyesters synthesized by microbes which consume excess amount of carbon and less amount of nutrients. It is biodegradable in nature, and it synthesized from renewable resources. It is considered as a future polymer, which act as an attractive replacement to petrochemical based polymers. The main hindrance to the commercial application of PHA is the high manufacturing cost. This article provides an overview of different cost-effective substrates, their characteristics and composition, major strains involved in economical production of PHA and biosynthetic pathways leading to accumulation of PHA. This review also covers the operational parameters, various fermentative modes including batch, fed-batch, repeated fed-batch and continuous fed-batch systems, along with advanced feeding strategies such as single pulse carbon feeding, feed forward control, intermittent carbon feeding, feast famine conditions to observe their effects for improving PHA synthesis and associated challenges. In addition, it also presents the economic analysis and future perspectives for the commercialization of PHA production process thereby making the process sustainable and lucrative with the possibility of commercial biomanufacturing.

Alkali activated persulfate mediated extracellular organic release on enzyme secreting bacterial pretreatment for efficient hydrogen production

The present investigation is proposed to assess the competency of Sodium Persulphate (SPS) induced enzyme secreting bacterial pretreatment in enhancing the generation of biohydrogen from waste activated sludge (WAS). Alkali activated SPS of dosage 0.015 g/g SS has been opted to disseminate the floc structure to fortify the release of Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) into aqueous phase. This removal of EPS enhances the bacterial disintegration fostering 18.71% of suspended solids reduction and 21% of COD solubilization which was comparatively higher than bacterially pretreated (BP) and control (C) sludge. Biohydrogen production of control (C), bacterially pretreated (BP) and SPS mediated bacterially pretreated (SPS-BP) sludge were found to be 32.2 mLH₂/g COD, 48.3 mLH₂/g COD and 103.8 mLH₂/g COD respectively. The net energy production of SPS - BP is 0.01 kWh which is higher than the C and BP sample during the entire treatment and obtained energy ratio greater than 1.

Dynamic membrane bioreactor for high rate continuous biohydrogen production from algal biomass

This study aimed to achieve continuous biohydrogen production from red algal biomass using a dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR). The DMBR was continuously fed with pretreated Echeuma spinosum containing 20 g/L hexose. The highest average hydrogen production rate (HPR) of 21.58 ± 1.59 L/L-d was observed at HRT 3 h, which was higher than previous reports for continuous H₂ production from biomass feedstock. Metabolic flux analysis revealed that butyric acid and propionic acid were the major by-products of the H₂-producing and H₂-consuming pathways, respectively, of the algal biomass fermentation. Hydrogen consumption by propionic acid pathway could not be prevented completely by heat treatment. PICRUSt2 analysis predicted that Clostridium sp., Anaerostipes sp., and Caproiciproducens sp. might significantly contribute to the expression of both ferredoxin hydrogenase and propionate CoA-transferase. This study would provide the design and operational information on high-rate bioreactor for continuous hydrogen production using biomass.

Management of microbial enzymes for biofuels and biogas production by using metagenomic and genome editing approaches

Non-renewable fossil fuels such as bitumen, coal, natural gas, oil shale, and petroleum are depleting over the world owing to unrestricted consumption. Biofuels such as biodiesel, biobutanol, bioethanol, and biogas are considered an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives of fossil fuels. For energy sustainability, the production of advanced biofuels is required. The advancement of genetic and metabolic engineering in microbial cells played a significant contribution to biofuels overproduction. Essential approaches such as next-generation sequencing technologies and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing of microbial cells are required for the mass manufacture of biofuels globally. Advanced "omics" approaches are used to construct effective microorganisms for biofuels manufacturing. A new investigation is required to augment the production of lignocellulosic-based biofuels with minimal use of energy. Advanced areas of metabolic engineering are introduced in the manufacture of biofuels by the use of engineered microbial strains. Genetically modified microorganisms are used for the production of biofuels in large quantities at a low-cost.

Advancement of green technologies: A comprehensive review on the potential application of microalgae biomass

Microalgae have drawn significant interest worldwide, owing to their enormous application potential in the green energy, biopharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. Many studies have proved and stated the potential of microalgae in the area of biofuel which is economically effective and environmentally friendly. Besides the commercial value, the potential of microalgae in environmental protection has also been investigated. Microalgae-based process is one of the most effective way to treat heavy metal pollution, compared to conventional methods, it does not release any toxic waste or harmful gases, and the aquatic organism will not receive any harmful effects. The potential dual role of microalge in phytoremedation and energy production has made it widely explored for its capability. The interest of microalgae in various application has motivated a new focus in green technologies. Considering the rapid population growth with the continuous increase on the global demand and the application of biomass in diverse field, significant upgrades have been performed to accommodate green technological advancement. In the past decade, noteworthy advancement has been made on the technology involving the diverse application of microalgae biomass. This review aims to explore on the application of microalgae and the development of green technology in various application for microalgae biomass. There is great prospects for researchers in this field to delve into other potential utilization of microalgae biomass not only for bioremediation process but also to generate revenues from microalgae by incorporating clean and green technology for long-term sustainability and environmental benefits.

Mechanical-biological treatment of municipal solid waste: Case study of 100 TPD Goa plant, India

A long-term feasibility analysis of a 100 ton per day mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant for municipal solid waste (MSW) valorization and material and energy recovery was carried out. It involves the material recovery and segregation stage (MRSS), organic extraction (pulping), thermophilic anaerobic digestion (AD), composting, effluent treatment plant (ETP), and biogas genset stages producing: 11.90% recyclables, 33% refused derived fuel (RDF), 5% compost of total waste received, 70 m³/day recyclable water and 0.435 MWh/day electricity. The biogas and methane yield were 0.535 and 0.350 m³/kg VS_added (avg.), respectively, with 40% VS removal (avg total solids (TS) 10%). Less than 3% (inert) of total waste received was subjected to landfill disposal. The MBT plant's revenue generation is 995 US$ per day/148 tons ($ 6.72/ton) waste processed. The gross OPEX is 24 US$/ton making the net OPEX of 17 US$/ton (minus revenue), which could be considered as the excellent OPEX for MSW based MBT plants as per global benchmarks. Further, local usage of RDF can significantly reduce the OPEX to 14 US$/ton, as almost 16% of the OPEX goes towards RDF disposal to cement companies located at a distance of 200-500 km from the MBT plant site. As per LCA study, the total GHG emissions have been calculated to be -25.68 tons CO₂ eq./100 tons MSW. The negative emissions result from the export of electricity, compost, and RDF as well as recycling of paper and plastic products. Our study presents a cutting-edge scenario of all-inclusive recycling, recovery, and reuse loop of MSW direly required for accomplishing a circular economy.

A review on anaerobic digestion of energy and cost effective microalgae pretreatment for biogas production

Microalgae is considered as a renewable and sustainable biomass to produce bioenergy and other high-value products. Besides, the cultivation of microalgae does not need any fertile land and it provides opportunities for climate change mitigation by sequestering atmospheric carbon-dioxide (CO₂), facilitating nutrient recovery from wastewater and regulating industrial pollutions/emissions. Algal biomass harvested from different technologies are unique in their physio-chemical properties that require critical understanding prior to value-addition or bioenergy recovery. In this review, we elaborate the importance of cell wall weakening followed by pretreatment as a key process step and strategy to reduce the energy cost of converting algal biomass into bioenergy. From the energy-calculations, it was measured that the cell wall weakening significantly improves the net-energy ratio from 0.68 to 1.02. This approach could be integrated with any pre-treatment options, while it reduces the time of pre-treatment and costs of energy/chemicals required for hydrolysis of algal biomass.

Enhanced phytoextraction of multi-metal contaminated soils under increased atmospheric temperature by bioaugmentation with plant growth promoting Bacillus cereus

The co-occurrence of environmental stresses such as heavy metals (HM) and increased atmospheric temperature (IAT) pose serious implications on plant growth and productivity. In this work, we evaluated the role of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and its effectiveness on Zea mays growth, stress tolerance and phytoremediation potential in multi-metal (MM) contaminated soils under IAT stress conditions. The PGPB strain TCU11 was isolated from metal contaminated soils and identified as Bacillus cereus. TCU11 was able to resist abiotic stresses such as IAT (45 °C), MM (Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cd), antibiotics and induced in vitro plant growth promotion (PGP) by producing siderophores (catechol and hydroxymate) and indole 3-acetic acid even in the presence of MM under IAT. Inoculation of TCU11 significantly increased the biomass, chlorophyll, carotenoids, and protein content of Z. mays compared to the respective control under MM, IAT, and MM + IAT stress. A decrease of malondialdehyde and over-accumulation of total phenolics, proline along with the increased activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbic peroxidase were observed in TCU11 inoculated plants under stress conditions. These results suggested MM and/or IAT significantly reduced the maize growth, whereas TCU11 inoculation mitigated the combined stress effects on maize performance. Moreover, the inoculation of TCU11 under IAT stress increased the MM (Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cd) accumulation in plant tissues and also increased the translocation of HM from root to shoot except for Ni. The results of soil HM mobilization further indicates that IAT increased the HM mobilizing activity of TCU11, thus increasing the concentrations of bio-available HM in soil. These results suggested that TCU11 not only alleviates MM and IAT stresses but also enhances the biomass production and HM accumulation in plants. Therefore, TCU11 can be exploited as inoculums for improving the phytoremediation efficiency in MM polluted soils under IAT conditions.

A review on energy and cost effective phase separated pretreatment of biosolids

Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) existent in anaerobic sludge proves to be a barrier for sludge liquefaction and biomass lysis efficiency. Hence EPS deaggregation heightens the surface area for the subsequent pretreatment thereby uplifting the sludge disintegration and biomethanation rate. This review documents the role of EPS and its components which inhibits sludge hydrolysis and also the various phase separated pretreatment methods available with its disintegration mechanism to enhance the biomass lysis and methane production rate. It also illustrates the effects of phase separated pretreatment on the sludge disintegration rate which embodies two phases-floc disruption and cell lysis accompanied by their computation through biomethane potential assay and fermentation analysis comprehensively. Additionally, energy balance study and cost analysis requisite for successful implementation of a proposed phase separated pretreatment on a pilot scale level and their challenges are also reviewed. Overall this paper documents the potency of phase separated pretreatment for full scale approach.

Solubilisation of fruits and vegetable dregs through surfactant mediated sonic disintegration: impact on biomethane potential and energy ratio

This study investigates the symbiotic effect of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) coupled with sonication of fruits and vegetable dregs (FVD) on disintegration and subsequent energy efficient methane production. The liquefaction of FVD experiments was conducted by varying dosage of surfactant from 0.001to 0.01 g/g SS for 60 min in mechanical shaker. The optimised dosage of surfactant was combined with sonication. Finally, the combined pretreatment and sole pretreatment were assessed using methane potential assay. The results revealed that at optimised conditions (sonication specific energy of 5400 kJ/kg TS, CTAB dosage of 0.006 g/g SS), the maximum liquefiable organics release rate and solids reduction of CTAB mediated sonic disintegration (CSD) were found respectively to be 27% and 17% more than the ultrasonic disintegration (16% and 10%). CSD was noticed to be superior than ultrasonic disintegration (UD) based on highest volatile fatty acid yield (2000 mg/L vs. 1250 mg/L) and biochemical methane potential (203 mL/g COD vs. 144 mL/g COD). CSD achieved energy ratio of 0.9 which is greater than ultrasonic disintegration energy ratio 0.4.

Biowaste-to-bioplastic (polyhydroxyalkanoates): Conversion technologies, strategies, challenges, and perspective

Biowaste management is a challenging job as it is high in nutrient content and its disposal in open may cause a serious environmental and health risk. Traditional technologies such as landfill, bio-composting, and incineration are used for biowaste management. To gain revenue from biowaste researchers around the world focusing on the integration of biowaste management with other commercial products such as volatile fatty acids (VFA), biohydrogen, and bioplastic (polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)), etc. PHA production from various biowastes such as lignocellulosic biomass, municipal waste, waste cooking oils, biodiesel industry waste, and syngas has been reported successfully. Various nutrient factors i.e., carbon and nitrogen source concentration and availability of dissolved oxygen are crucial factors for PHA production. This review is an attempt to summarize the recent advancements in PHA production from various biowaste, its downstream processing, and other challenges that need to overcome making bioplastic an alternate for synthetic plastic.

Novel framework of GIS based automated monitoring process on environmental biodegradability and risk analysis using Internet of Things

A proper method on real-time monitoring of organic biomass degradation and its evaluation for safeguarding the ecosystem is the need of the hour. The work process designed in this study is to demarcate the anaerobic digestion potential using kinetic modelling and web GIS application methods. Wastewater source that causes pollution are identified through satellite maps such as solid earth, drain system, surface of earth structure, land filling and land use. The grabbed data are utilized for identifying the concentration of sludge availability. Based on literature resource multi influencing factor techniques are introduced along with overlay method to differentiate digestion potential of sludge source. This study optimizes the biodegradation potential of domestic sewage at different sludge concentrations in a pilot model operated with the samples identified through topographical drainage survey. The materialization of devices is using the Internet of Things (IoTs), that is pragmatic to be the promising tendency. Kinetic study, methanogenic assay test are performed with three different cation binding agents to find its solubilization potential and methane evolution, which is further subjected to digestion potential in anaerobic conditions for possible application in the field of environmental science. Risk analysis reveals that land filling method will have highest impact on maintaining sustainable environment. The results outcome on natural biodegradation may be used for individual house hold wastewater management for the locality.

Techno-economic assessment of various hydrogen production methods - A review

Hydrogen is a clean fuel that could provide energy incentives and reduce environmental impacts, if production platform is carefully selected and optimized. In specific, techno-economic and sensitivity analysis of the existing hydrogen production platforms and processes is need for an hour to boost the future hydrogen economical aspects. This will have greater impact on future hydrogen production project designs and developing new approaches to reduce the overall production costs to make it as cheaper fuel. The sensitivity analysis of various hydrogen production process such as pyrolysis, gasification, steam reforming of natural gas, dark fermentation, photobiolysis, water electrolysis and renewable liquid reforming were reviewed to evaluate their merits and demerits along with cost-effectiveness. On economic view point, steam reforming of natural gas is efficient, low cost and best methods for hydrogen production. A future research is required to reduce energy input and trapping carbon dioxide emission using membrane models.

Integrated biorefinery routes of biohydrogen: Possible utilization of acidogenic fermentative effluent

Biohydrogen production and integration possibilities are vital towards hydrogen economy and sustainability of the environment. Acidogenic fermentation is acquiring great interest and it is one of the prime pathways to produce biohydrogen and short chain carboxylic acids. In addition to hydrogen recovery, simultaneously nearly 60 percent of the organics may get converted to ethanol, 1,3propanediol and organic acids. Besides, these organics (fermentative effluents) can be used indirectly as a raw material for the generation of value- added products such as biolipid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, excess hydrogen, methane and electrical energy recovery. In this regard, this review has been assessed as a valuable biorefinery for biofuel and value- added products recovery. The biorefinery can be used to minimize entire cost of the approach by obtaining extra profits.

A review on valorization of spent coffee grounds (SCG) towards biopolymers and biocatalysts production

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are an important waste product millions of tons generated from coffee consumption and could be effectively utilized for various applications due to their high organic content. SCG can be used as a potential feedstock to develop coffee-based biorefinery towards value-added products generation through various biotechnological processes. Considerable developments have been reported on emerging SCG-based processes/products in various environmental fields such as removal of heavy metals and cationic dyes and in wastewater treatment. In addition, SCG are also utilized to produce biochar and biofuels. This review addressed the details of innovative processes used to produce polymers and catalysts from SCG. Moreover, the application of these developed products is provided and future directions of the circular economy for SCG utilization.

Immobilized ZnO nano film impelled bacterial disintegration of dairy sludge to enrich anaerobic digestion for profitable bioenergy production: Energetic and economic analysis

Proper treatment and disposal of sludge is a substantial task around the biosphere. To address this issue, sludge deflocculation using photocatalyst was opted to enhance bacterial disintegration which in turn accelerate sludge digestion anaerobically. During this investigation, Direct current (DC) sputtering together with annealing process was used to immobilize Zinc oxide (ZnO). This immobilized ZnO removes the extracellular components at 15 min. The deflocculation mediated bacterial pretreatment induced 22.9% of soluble organics solubilization which auguments the biodegradability to 0.195 g COD/g COD during anaerobic digestion. The quantity of methane generated by deflocculated sludge was 39.2% higher than sludge with bacterial disintegration only with maximum methane yield of 437.14 mL/g COD. Hence, the outcome of the proposed work confirmed that the method is scalable with a net profit of 27 USD with the maximum methane generation of 413.1 kWh. Additionally, this method reduced 57% of dry sludge (solid).

Impervious and influence in the liquid fuel production from municipal plastic waste through thermo-chemical biomass conversion technologies - A review

Plastic waste is an environmental burden substance, which poses a high threat to the society during disposal. Rather than disposal, recycling of this waste to liquid fuel gains importance owing to its high utility. Among various techniques, thermo-chemical recycling techniques hold more benefits in generating high value added liquid fuels. In this review, the details of municipal plastic waste generation are provided with a brief description of the plastic waste management option and importance of recycling is explained. The overview of the thermo-chemical treatment focusing on the pyrolysis, gasification and hydrocracking process was elaborated. Catalysts mediated pyrolysis have wide-open their prospective for the generation of bio-oil, hydrocarbons, syngas and deterioration of undesired substances. Generally, advance development of enthusiastic catalysts for the synthesis of bio-oil would be vital for scaling up the pyrolysis process to succeed in commercial manufacture of biofuels from waste plastics. Overall rate treatment depends on operating parameter which determines the process efficiency and product yield. Hence, critical assessment of various parameter that has remarkable effect in the thermo-chemical treatment process was documented in detail. Moreover, endorsements of liquid fuel production, economic viability, and energy requirement of the treatment process, were delivered to attain effectual plastic wastes management.

Cost effective biomethanation via surfactant coupled ultrasonic liquefaction of mixed microalgal biomass harvested from open raceway pond

The present study aimed to enhance the biomethanation potential of mixed microalgae via cost effective surfactant coupled ultrasonic homogenization (SCUH). Mixed microalgae biomass was harvested using a coagulant (Alum) from a raceway pond. The harvested algal biomass was subjected to ultrasonic homogenization (UH) by varying the power from 100 to 180 W. A maximal soluble organic release of 2131 mg/L was achieved at an ultrasonic input energy (UIE) of 25200 kJ/kg TS. In order to enhance soluble organic release and to reduce energy spent, the optimized condition of ultrasonic pretreatment was coupled with varying sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) dosage. A higher solubilization of 30.5% was achieved at a UIE of 4200 kJ/kg SS with surfactant dosage of 0.02 g SDS/g SS for SCUH. SCUH showed higher methane production of 358 mL/g COD when compared to UH (185.9 mL/g COD), SCUH was economically feasible than UH.
