Selective (sono)photocatalytic cleavage of lignin-inspired β-O-4 linkages to phenolics by ultrasound derived 1-D titania nanomaterials

Catalytic conversion of lignin to value-added aromatic compounds is still an open challenge, since the selective cleavage of the linkages interconnecting the aromatic molecules, especially the β-O-4 ones, is not efficiently achieved yet. Herein, novel titania-based nanostructured materials were synthesized using low-power-low-frequency ultrasound that demonstrated high efficiency for the selective cleavage of Cα-Cβ bond of β-O-4 linkages of lignin-inspired model compounds. Going a step ahead, experiments of sonophotocatalytic valorization of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol were contacted for the first time, where the exposure to ultrasound leading to better conversion and selectivity towards the desired products in the case of the novel ultrasound-synthesized nano-photocatalyst. Mechanistic insights showcased that photogenerated holes are the main active species in the catalytic process. In general, this research work provides a green, effective, and cost-effective approach for the selective and efficient catalytic lignin valorization.

Structural Modification Strategies, Interfacial Charge-Carrier Dynamics, and Solar Energy Conversion Applications of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Photocatalysts

Over the past few decades, organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) as novel photocatalyst materials have attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of photocatalytic applications due to their excellent photophysical (chemical) properties. Regarding practical application and future commercialization, the air-water stability and photocatalytic performance of OIHPs need to be further improved. Accordingly, studying modification strategies and interfacial interaction mechanisms is crucial. In this review, the current progress in the development and photocatalytic fundamentals of OIHPs is summarized. Furthermore, the structural modification strategies of OIHPs, including dimensionality control, heterojunction design, encapsulation techniques, and so on for the enhancement of charge-carrier transfer and the enlargement of long-term stability, are elucidated. Subsequently, the interfacial mechanisms and charge-carrier dynamics of OIHPs during the photocatalytic process are systematically specified and classified via diverse photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods, such as time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, transient photocurrent densities, and so forth. Eventually, various photocatalytic applications of OIHPs, including hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and photocatalytic conversion of organic matter.

Tuning the physicochemical features of titanium oxide nanomaterials by ultrasound: Elevating photocatalytic selective partial oxidation of lignin-inspired aromatic alcohols

The research for "green" and economically feasible approaches such as (photo)catalysis especially for biomass valorization such as selective oxidation of biomass derived compounds like aromatic alcohols to corresponding aldehyde by avoiding the harsh reaction conditions and the addition of reagents concentrate the focus of attention the last years. Hence, design and development of novel photocatalyst for the partial selective oxidation is highly desirable. In this research work, ultrasonication of different frequencies (22, 40, 80 kHz) and different amplitudes was utilized as synthesis tool in order to obtain novel materials by precipitation method. The synthesized samples were characterized by using different techniques such as N₂ sorption, TEM, XPS, XRD, thermal analysis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The synthesized sample by using low ultrasound frequency (22 kHz) and amplitude showed a mixed morphological and structural nature consisting of asymmetric 1-dimensional (nanorods-like), layered nano-structures and not well-defined areas, leading to elevate for metal oxide specific surface areas up to 155 m²/g. The observed 1-D nanostructures have diamentions in the range of 20-60 nm. This sample revealed the highest photo-oxidation efficiency for the selective conversion of two biomass-derived, and more specifically lignin-inspired model compounds, benzyl alcohol and cinnamyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and cinnamyl aldehyde, respectively, and hence the highest yield towards the desired aldehydes. The selective photo-oxidation activity was retained even after 5 photocatalytic cycles, while no leaching of Ti was recorded.

Unravelling the Interfacial Dynamics of Bandgap Funneling in Bismuth-Based Halide Perovskites

An environmentally friendly mixed-halide perovskite MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_{9- x} I_x with a bandgap funnel structure has been developed. However, the dynamic interfacial interactions of bandgap funneling in MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_{9- x} I_x perovskites in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) system remain ambiguous. In light of this, single- and mixed-halide lead-free bismuth-based hybrid perovskites-MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_{9- y} I_y and MA₃ Bi₂ I₉ (named MBCl-I and MBI)-in the presence and absence of the bandgap funnel structure, respectively, are prepared. Using temperature-dependent transient photoluminescence and electrochemical voltammetric techniques, the photophysical and (photo)electrochemical phenomena of solid-solid and solid-liquid interfaces for MBCl-I and MBI halide perovskites are therefore confirmed. Concerning the mixed-halide hybrid perovskites MBCl-I with a bandgap funnel structure, stronger electronic coupling arising from an enhanced overlap of electronic wavefunctions results in more efficient exciton transport. Besides, MBCl-I's effective diffusion coefficient and electron-transfer rate demonstrate efficient heterogeneous charge transfer at the solid-liquid interface, generating improved photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. Consequently, this combination of photophysical and electrochemical techniques opens up an avenue to explore the intrinsic and interfacial properties of semiconductor materials for elucidating the correlation between material characterization and device performance.

Bandgap Funneling in Bismuth-Based Hybrid Perovskite Photocatalyst with Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

The photocatalytic system using hydrohalic acid (HX) for hydrogen production is a promising strategy to generate clean and renewable fuels as well as value-added chemicals (such as X₂ /X₃ ^- ). However, it is still challenging to develop a visible-light active and strong-acid resistive photocatalyst. Hybrid perovskites have been recognized as a potential photocatalyst for photovoltaic HX splitting. Herein, a novel environmentally friendly mixed halide perovskite MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x with a bandgap funnel structure is developed, i.e., confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and density functional theory calculations. Due to gradient neutral formation energy within iodine-doped MA₃ Bi₂ Cl₉ , the concentration of iodide element decreases from the surface to the interior across the MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x perovskite. Because of the aligned energy levels of iodide/chloride-mixed MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x , a graded bandgap funnel structure is therefore formed, leading to the promotion of photoinduced charge transfer from the interior to the surface for efficient photocatalytic redox reaction. As a result, the hydrogen generation rate of the optimized MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x is enhanced up to ≈341 ± 61.7 µmol h^-1 with a Pt co-catalyst under visible light irradiation.

Enhanced uranium removal from acidic wastewater by phosphonate-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica: Surface chemistry matters the most

The removal of uranium species from aqueous phases using non-hazardous chemicals is still an open challenge, and remediation by adsorption is a prosperous strategy. Among the most crucial concerns regarding the design of an efficient material as adsorbent are, except the cost and the green character, the feasibility to be stable and effective under acidic pH, and to selectively adsorb the desired metal ion (e.g. uranium). Herein, we present a phosphonate functionalized ordered mesoporous silica (OMS-P), prepared by a one-step co-condensation synthesis. The physicochemical features of the material were determined by HR-TEM, XPS, EDX, N₂ sorption, and solid NMR, while the surface zeta potential was also measured. The removal efficiency was evaluated at two different temperatures (20 and 50 °C) in acidic environment to avoid interferences like solid phase formation or carbonate complexation and the adsorption isotherms, including data fitting with Langmuir and Freundlich models and thermodynamic parameters are presented and discussed. The high and homogeneous dispersion of the phosphonate groups within the entire silica's structure led to the greatest reported up-todays capacity (345 mg/g) at pH = 4, which was achieved in less than 10 min. Additionally, OMS-P showed that the co-presence of other polyvalent cation like Eu(III) did not affect the efficiency of adsorption, which occurs via inner-sphere complex formation. The comparison to the non-functionalized silica (OMS) revealed that the key feature towards an efficient, stable, and selective removal of the U(VI) species is the specific surface chemistry rather than the textural and structural features. Based on all the results and spectroscopic validations of surface adsorbed U(VI), the main interactions responsible for the elevated uranium removal were proposed.

Polydopamine Films with 2D-like Layered Structure and High Mechanical Resilience

Highly oriented, layered, and mechanically resilient films of polydopamine (PDA) have been synthesized from the air/water interface. The films show a unique layered structure, as shown by scanning and transmission electron studies (SEM/TEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), which resemble that of 2D layered materials. The films exhibit a composition typical of PDA-based materials, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); moreover, the samples present the distinctive resonance modes of PDA-based nanomaterials in Raman and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments. The presence of highly ordinated 3-4 protomolecule stacking, taking place at the air/water interface, with a unique eumelanin-like supramolecular arrangement is presented. Moreover, the films show superior mechanical resilience with E = 13 ± 4 GPa and H = 0.21 ± 0.03 GPa, as revealed by nanoindentation experiments, making them highly resilient and easily transferable. Finally, the ordering induced by the interface opens many possibilities for further studies, including those regarding the supramolecular structure on PDA due to their similarity to 2D layered materials.

Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Diformylfuran by Visible Light-Driven Photocatalysis over In Situ Substrate-Sensitized Titania

Solar energy-driven processes for biomass valorization are priority for the growing industrialized society. To address this challenge, efficient visible light-active photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of biomass-derived platform chemical is highly desirable. Herein, selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was achieved by visible light-driven photocatalysis over titania. Pristine titania is photocatalytically inactive under visible light, so an unconventional approach was employed for the visible light (λ=515 nm) sensitization of titania via a formation of a visible light-absorbing complex of HMF (substrate) on the titania surface. Surface-complexation of HMF on titania mediated ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) under visible light, which efficiently catalyzed the oxidation of HMF to DFF. A high DFF selectivity of 87 % was achieved with 59 % HMF conversion after 4 h of illumination. The apparent quantum yield obtained for DFF production was calculated to be 6.3 %. It was proposed that the dissociative interaction of hydroxyl groups of HMF and the titania surface is responsible for the surface-complex formation. When the hydroxyl groups of titania were modified via surface-fluorination or calcination the oxidation of HMF was inhibited under visible light, signifying that hydroxyl groups are decisive for photocatalytic activity.

Titania/chitosan–lignin nanocomposite as an efficient photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under UV and visible light

Developing functional materials from biomass is a significant research subject due to its unique structure, abundant availability, biodegradability and low cost. A series of chitosan–lignin (CL) composites were prepared through a hydrothermal method by varying the weight ratio of chitosan and lignin. Subsequently, these CL composites were combined with titania (T) to form a nanocomposite (T/CL) using sol–gel and hydrothermal based methods. T/CL nanocomposites exhibited improved photocatalytic performance in comparison with sol–gel and hydrothermally prepared pristine titania (SGH-TiO₂), towards the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BnOH) to benzaldehyde (Bnald) under UV (375 nm) and visible light (515 nm). More specifically, the 75T/CL(25 : 75) nanocomposite (a representative photocatalyst from the 75T/CL nanocomposite series) showed very high selectivity (94%) towards Bnald at 55% BnOH conversion under UV light. Whereas, SGH-TiO₂ titania exhibited much lower (68%) selectivity for Bnald at similar BnOH conversion. Moreover, the 75T/CL(25 : 75) nanocomposite also showed excellent Bnald selectivity (100%) at moderate BnOH conversion (19%) under visible light. Whereas, SGH-TiO₂ did not show any activity for BnOH oxidation under visible light. XPS studies suggest that the visible light activity of the 75T/CL(25 : 75) nanocomposite is possibly related to the doping of nitrogen into titania from chitosan. However, according to UV-visible-DRS results, no direct evidence pertaining to the decrease in band-gap energy of titania was found upon coupling with the CL composite and the visible light activity was attributed to N-doping of titania. Overall, it was found that T/CL nanocomposites enhanced the photocatalytic performance of titania via improved light harvesting and higher selectivity through mediation of active radical species.

Combining titania with chitosan–lignin composites results in an active and selective photocatalyst for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under green light (515 nm).

Metal Organic Frameworks as Desulfurization Adsorbents of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT from Fuels

Ultradeep desulfurization of fuels is a method of enormous demand due to the generation of harmful compounds during the burning of sulfur-containing fuels, which are a major source of environmental pollution. Among the various desulfurization methods in application, adsorptive desulfurization (ADS) has low energy demand and is feasible to be employed at ambient conditions without the addition of chemicals. The most crucial factor for ADS application is the selection of the adsorbent, and, currently, a new family of porous materials, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), has proved to be very effective towards this direction. In the current review, applications of MOFs and their functionalized composites for ADS are presented and discussed, as well as the main desulfurization mechanisms reported for the removal of thiophenic compounds by various frameworks. Prospective methods regarding the further improvement of MOF's desulfurization capability are also suggested.

Mechanochemical Forces as a Synthetic Tool for Zero- and One-Dimensional Titanium Oxide-Based Nano-photocatalysts

A new field where the utilization of mechanochemistry can create new opportunities is materials chemistry, and, more interestingly, the synthesis of novel nanomaterials. Ball-milling procedures and ultrasonic techniques can be regarded as the most important mechanochemical synthetic tools, since they can act as attractive alternatives to the conventional methods. It is also feasible for the utilization of mechanochemical forces to act synergistically with the conventional synthesis (as a pre-treatment step, or simultaneously during the synthesis) in order to improve the synthetic process and/or the material's desired features. The usage of ultrasound irradiation or ball-milling treatment is found to play a crucial role in controlling and enhancing the structural, morphological, optical, and surface chemistry features that are important for heterogeneous photocatalytic practices. The focus of this article is to collect all the available examples in which the utilization of sonochemistry or ball milling had unique effects as a synthesis tool towards zero- or one-dimensional nanostructures of a semiconductor which is assumed as a benchmark in photocatalysis, titanium dioxide.

Thermo-Photocatalysis: Environmental and Energy Applications

Catalysis is an integral part of a majority of chemical operations focused on the generation of value-added chemicals or fuels. Similarly, the extensive use of fossil-derived fuels and chemicals has led to deterioration of the environment. Catalysis currently plays a key role in mitigating such effects. Thermal catalysis and photocatalysis are two well-known catalytic approaches that were applied in both energy and environmental fields. Thermo-photocatalysis can be understood as a synergistic effect of the two catalytic processes with key importance in the use of solar energy as thermal and light source. This Review provides an update on relevant contributions about thermo-photocatalytic systems for environmental and energy applications. The reported activity data are compared with the conventional photocatalytic approach and the base of the photothermal effect is analyzed. Some of the systems based on the positive aspects of thermo- and photocatalysis could be the answer to the energy and environmental crisis when taking into account the outstanding results with regard to chemical efficiency and energy saving.

Lignin-Based Composite Materials for Photocatalysis and Photovoltaics

Depleting conventional fuel reserves has prompted the demand for the exploration of renewable resources. Biomass is a widely available renewable resource that can be valorized to produce fuels, chemicals, and materials. Among all the fractions of biomass, lignin has been underutilized. Due to its complex structure, recalcitrant nature, and heterogeneity, its valorization is relatively challenging. This review focuses on the utilization of lignin for the preparation of composite materials and their application in the field of photocatalysis and photovoltaics. Lignin can be used as a photocatalyst support for its potential application in photodegradation of contaminants. The interaction between the components in hybrid photocatalysts plays a significant role in determining the photocatalytic performance. The application of lignin as a photocatalyst support tends to control the size of the particles and allows uniform distribution of the particles that influence the characteristics of the photocatalyst. Lignin as a semiconductive polymer dopant for photoanodes in photovoltaic cells can improve the photoconversion efficiency of the cell. Recent success in the development of lignosulfonates dopant for hole transport materials in photovoltaics will pave the way for further research in lignin-based high-performance organic electronic devices.

Development of photocatalyst coated fluoropolymer based microreactor using ultrasound for water remediation

Formation of thin layers of photocatalyst in photo-microreactor is a challenging work considering the properties of both catalyst and the microchannel material. The deposition of semiconductor materials on fluoropolymer based microcapillary requires the use of economical methods which are also less energy dependent. The current work introduces a new method for depositing nanoparticles of TiO₂ on the inner walls of a hexafluoropropylene tetrafluoroethylene microtube under mild conditions using ultrasound technique. During the ultrasonication process, changes in the polymer surface were observed and characterized using Attenuated Total Reflectance spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Confocal Microscopy. The rough patches form sites for catalyst deposition resulting in the formation of thin layer of TiO₂ nanoparticles in the inner walls of the microtube. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO₂ coated fluoropolymer based microcapillary was evaluated for removal of phenol present in water.

Multichannel Charge Transfer and Mechanistic Insight in Metal Decorated 2D-2D Bi2 WO6 -TiO2 Cascade with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Promising semiconductor-based photocatalysis toward achieving efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion is an ideal strategy in response to the growing worldwide energy crisis, which however is often practically limited by the insufficient photoinduced charge-carrier separation. Here, a rational cascade engineering of Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated 2D/2D Bi₂ WO₆ -TiO₂ (B-T) binanosheets to foster the photocatalytic efficiency through the manipulated flow of multichannel-enhanced charge-carrier separation and transfer is reported. Mechanistic characterizations and control experiments, in combination with comparative studies over plasmonic Au/Ag NPs and nonplasmonic Pt NPs decorated 2D/2D B-T composites, together demonstrate the cooperative synergy effect of multiple charge-carrier transfer channels in such binanosheets-based ternary composites, including Z-scheme charge transfer, "electron sink," and surface plasmon resonance effect, which integratively leads to the boosted photocatalytic performance.

Wheat bran valorisation: Towards photocatalytic nanomaterials for benzyl alcohol photo-oxidation

In this work, we have successfully synthesized a set of titania photocatalytic nanocomposites by the incorporation of different TiO₂ content on wheat bran residues. The obtained catalysts were characterized by different techniques including UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) while their photocatalytic activity was investigated in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol under UV light irradiation. Benzaldehyde yields were ca. 20%, with conversion in the systems of ca. 33% of benzyl alcohol by using 10%Ti-Bran catalyst, as compared to 33% yield to the target product (quantitative conversion of benzyl alcohol) using commercial pure TiO₂ (P-25). The photocatalytic activity results indicate that designed waste-derived nanomaterials with low TiO₂ content can efficiently photocatalyze the conversion of benzyl alcohol with relative high selectivity towards benzaldehyde.

Photoactive Hybrid Catalysts Based on Natural and Synthetic Polymers: A Comparative Overview

In the present review, we would like to draw the reader's attention to the polymer-based hybrid materials used in photocatalytic processes for efficient degradation of organic pollutants in water. These inorganic-organic materials exhibit unique physicochemical properties due to the synergistic effect originating from the combination of individual elements, i.e., photosensitive metal oxides and polymeric supports. The possibility of merging the structural elements of hybrid materials allows for improving photocatalytic performance through (1) an increase in the light-harvesting ability; (2) a reduction in charge carrier recombination; and (3) prolongation of the photoelectron lifetime. Additionally, the great majority of polymer materials exhibit a high level of resistance against ultraviolet irradiation and improved corrosion resistance. Taking into account that the chemical and environmental stability of the hybrid catalyst depends, to a great extent, on the functional support, we highlight benefits and drawbacks of natural and synthetic polymer-based photocatalytic materials and pay special attention to the fact that the accessibility of synthetic polymeric materials derived from petroleum may be impeded due to decreasing amounts of crude oil. Thus, it is necessary to look for cheap and easily available raw materials like natural polymers that come from, for instance, lignocellulosic wastes or crustacean residues to meet the demand of the "plastic" market.

Sonocatalysis: A Potential Sustainable Pathway for the Valorization of Lignocellulosic Biomass and Derivatives

Abstract

Lignocellulosic biomass represents a natural renewable chemical feedstock that can be used to produce high value-added chemicals and platform molecules. Nowadays, there are extensive studies on a variety of aspects concerning the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass into desirable products. Among the current technologies for biomass conversion some require extreme conditions along with high temperatures and pressures. Therefore, major technological innovations based on more economical and environmental methodologies are currently developed both in academic laboratories and in industry. In this context, ultrasound-assisted catalysis constitutes an alternative method offering new strategies to upgrade biomass. The possibility of combining catalysis with sonication indeed provides avenues that are worth exploring for the valorization of lignocellulosic compounds into value-added chemical feedstocks. In this mini-review, the available sonochemical systems are first presented, with a focus on the most important ultrasonic parameters, which is intended to provide a mechanistic background. Next, this contribution aims to provide insight into the most recent developments along with prominent examples in the field of sonocatalysis applied to the chemical transformation of lignocellulosic biomass and its derivatives.

Sustainable hybrid photocatalysts: titania immobilized on carbon materials derived from renewable and biodegradable resources

This review comprises the preparation, properties and heterogeneous photocatalytic applications of TiO2 immobilized on carbon materials derived from earth-abundant, renewable and biodegradable agricultural residues and sea food waste resources. The overview provides key scientific insights into widely used TiO2 supported on carbonaceous materials emanating from biopolymeric materials such as lignin, cellulose, cellulose acetate, bacterial cellulose, bamboo, wood, starch, chitosan and agricultural residues (biochar, charcoal, activated carbon and their magnetic forms, coal fly ash) or seafood wastes namely eggshell, clamshell and fish scales; materials that serve as a support/template for TiO2. Heightened awareness and future inspirational developments for the valorisation of various forms of carbonaceous functional materials is the main objective. This appraisal abridges various strategies available to upgrade renewable carbon-based feedstock via the generation of sustainable TiO2/carbon functional materials and provides remarks on their future prospects. Hopefully, this will stimulate the development of efficient and novel composite photocatalysts and engender the necessary knowledge base for further advancements in greener photocatalytic technologies.

Insight on the Interaction of Methanol-Selective Oxidation Intermediates with Au- or/and Pd-Containing Monometallic and Bimetallic Core@Shell Catalysts

Using density functional theory (DFT), the interaction of crucial molecules involved in the selective partial oxidation of methanol to methyl formate (MF) with monometallic Au and Pd and bimetallic Au/Pd and Pd/Au core@shell catalysts is systematically investigated. The core@shell structures modeled in this study consist of Au(111) and Pd(111) cores covered by a monolayer of Pd and Au, respectively. Our results indicate that the adsorption strength of the molecules examined as a function of catalytic surface decreases in the order of Au/Pd(111) > Pd(111) > Au(111) > Pd/Au(111) and correlates well with the d-band center model. The preadsorption of oxygen is found to have a positive impact on the selective partial oxidation reaction because of the stabilization of CH3OH and HCHO on the catalyst surface and the simultaneous intensification of MF desorption. On the basis of a dynamical matrix approach combined with statistical thermodynamics, we propose a simple route for evaluating the Gibbs free energy of adsorption as a function of temperature. This method allows us to anticipate the relative temperature stability of molecules involved in the selective partial oxidation of methanol to MF in terms of catalytic surface.

Heterogeneous photocatalytic nanomaterials: prospects and challenges in selective transformations of biomass-derived compounds

Heterogeneous photocatalysis has become a comprehensively studied area of research during the past three decades due to its practical interest in applications including water-air depollution, cancer therapy, sterilization, artificial photosynthesis (CO2 photoreduction), anti-fogging surfaces, heat transfer and heat dissipation, anticorrosion, lithography, photochromism, solar chemicals production and many others. The utilization of solar irradiation to supply energy or to initiate chemical reactions is already an established idea. Excited electron-hole pairs are generated upon light irradiation of a wide-band gap semiconductor which can be applied to solar cells to generate electricity or in chemical processes to create/degrade specific compounds. While the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis for pollutant abatement and mineralisation of contaminants has been extensively investigated, a new research avenue related to the selective valorisation of residues has recently emerged as a promising alternative to utilise solar light for the production of valuable chemicals and fuels. This tutorial review will focus on the potential and applications of solid photonanocatalysts for the selective transformation of biomass-derived substrates.

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is becoming increasingly important due to the variety of its applications and multidisciplinary aspects. Applications such as water/air detoxification-disinfection, solar-energy storage, high-value-chemical production, optoelectronics, and sensors are some of the most promising. In recent years, the development of environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient procedures for material synthesis that could substitute the old ones has been on demand. Unconventional and soft techniques, such as sonication, offer enormous possibilities for the synthesis of a broad spectrum of nanostructured materials, among them photocatalysts. This Review will focus the readers' attention on ultrasound-induced methodologies used for the preparation of nanostructured photocatalysts (e.g., supported nanoparticles, semiconductors) and their application in the photocatalytic oxidation of organic contaminants.
