Abstract
Botscintigrafie is een zeer gevoelige techniek om vroege veranderingen in de metabole activiteit van botstructuren weer te geven, zoals verhoogde bloedperfusie en/of verhoogde botremodellering. Botscintigrafie is uiterst geschikt als gevoelige diagnostische tool in het mankheidsonderzoek van de hond maar moet wegens de beperkte specificiteit gecombineerd worden met structurele beeldvormingstechnieken. In deze retrospectieve studie werden 194 patiënten opgenomen die mankten op de achterpoten en/of pijn vertoonden op de achterhand in de periode van 2001 tot en met 2020. Vierenzestig honden werden in de studie ingesloten op basis van patiëntengegevens. Bij de geselecteerde honden werden de bevindingen van de botscintigrafie vergeleken met de vaststellingen op andere beeldvormingsmodaliteiten die eventueel vooraf uitgevoerd werden en met de beeldvorming die achteraf gebeurde op basis van de scintigrafiebeelden. Uit deze retrospectieve studie kan besloten worden dat botscintigrafie zijn nut bewijst bij aandoeningen, waarbij het voorgaande onderzoek niet conclusief was.

Abstract
Portosystemic shunts (PSS) are rare vascular anomalies in cats. Transsplenic portal scintigraphy (TSPS) can aid in diagnosing PSS in cats. Although the actual performance of the scan remains the same between species, it is questionable whether the generally accepted transit time of seven seconds for small dogs can be applied to cats, thereby influencing shunt fraction (SF) calculation. In this study, normal mean transit time and SF were determined in a population of cats without PSS following two methods established in canine medicine. For both, the mean ± SD transit time was calculated as 6.75 ± 1.58 seconds and 7.40 ± 1.64 seconds respectively, without significant difference between both methods. The results confirmed the validity of the generally used transit time of seven seconds for SF calculation in cats. The average normal SF (± SD) for the cats in this study was 0.73 % (±0.74; range 0.11-2.48%).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to describe the clinical and diagnostic characteristics, as well as outcomes of radioiodine treatment in dogs with hyperthyroidism caused by a non-resectable ectopic thyroid tumour. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study reviewed the medical records between 2008 and 2018 of dogs diagnosed with hyperthyroidism secondary to a non-resectable ectopic thyroid tumour and treated with radioiodine. RESULTS Five dogs were included in the study. Three dogs had sublingual ectopic tumours, of which one also had a unilateral cervical thyroid tumour. The remaining two dogs were diagnosed with an ectopic thyroid tumour at the level of the caudal pharynx and the heart base, respectively. All cases were treated with radioiodine. The size of the ectopic masses decreased after radioiodine treatment. Total thyroxine concentrations returned to reference ranges in all dogs. Further, clinical signs of hyperthyroidism disappeared after treatment in all patients. One dog developed myelosuppression secondary to radioiodine treatment. The dog with metastasis had a very short survival compared to the four dogs without metastasis (3 months compared to 7, 36, 50 and 24 months, respectively) and succumbed most likely to thyroid-related problems. In the remaining four dogs, their quality of life improved. They died due to diseases unrelated to the ectopic thyroid tumour. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Radioiodine therapy should be considered as a treatment option in dogs diagnosed with hyperthyroidism due to a non-resectable ectopic thyroid tumour.

Abstract
At the request of the Main Commission of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), Task Group 107 (TG107) was set up to consider the issue of radiological protection of the patient in veterinary medicine. TG107, who authored this article, brought together information relating to the use of diagnostic imaging and radiation oncology in veterinary medicine. A number of specific areas were identified that appeared to be appropriate for attention by ICRP. These included the use of dose quantities and units, the need for re-evaluation of stochastic and deterministic risks from ionising radiation in animals, and the growing use of imaging and therapeutic equipment for animals that is little different from that available to humans. TG107 unanimously recommended that it was both appropriate and timely for ICRP to consider and advise on these issues, and the Main Commission agreed. This paper summarises the findings of TG107.

Abstract
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been proposed as a treatment for several neuropsychiatric disorders in human beings, but the neurobiological effects of rTMS in dogs have not been investigated to date. A proof of concept study was designed to evaluate the effect of rTMS on cerebral perfusion, measured with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), in dogs. An accelerated high frequency (aHF)-rTMS (20Hz) protocol was applied to the canine left frontal cortex. To accurately target this area, eight dogs underwent a 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan before stimulation. The left frontal cortex was subjected to five consecutive aHF-rTMS sessions with a figure-of-eight coil designed for human beings at an intensity of 110% of the motor threshold. The dogs underwent 99mTc-d,1 hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (HMPAO) SPECT scans 1 week prior to and 1day after the stimulations. Perfusion indices (PIs) were determined semi-quantitatively; aHF-rTMS resulted in significantly increased PIs in the left frontal cortex and the subcortical region, whereas no significant differences were noted for the other regions. Behaviour was not influenced by the stimulation sessions. As has been observed in human beings, aHF-rTMS applied to the left frontal cortex alters regional cerebral perfusion in dogs.

Abstract
Hypericin (Hyp) is a necrosis-avid compound that can be efficiently labelled with radioiodine for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Before 131 I-Hyp can be considered as a clinically useful drug in a combination therapy for canine cancer patients, evaluation of its toxicity is necessary. The aim of this study was to investigate the biodistribution and tolerance of a single dose administration of 131 I-Hyp. Three healthy dogs were included. 131 I-Hyp at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg and an activity of 185 MBq was intravenously injected. The effects on physical, haematological and biochemical parameters were characterized and the biodistribution and elimination pattern, the effective half-life and dose rate were assessed. Drug-related adverse events were limited to mild gastrointestinal signs, resolving within 48 hours. No significant differences were found in blood haematology and serum biochemistry before and after treatment. Following administration, highest percentage of injected dose (%ID ± SD) was found in the liver (5.5 ± 0.33), the lungs (4.17 ± 0.14) and the heart (3.11 ± 0.78). After 24 hours, highest %ID was found in colon (4.25 ± 1.45) and liver (3.45 ± 0.60). Clearance from all organs was effective within 7 days. Effective half-life was established at 80 hours, and the dose rate fell below <20 μSv/h at 1 m within 1 day. The current study reveals that single dose treatment with 131 I-Hyp at the described dose is well tolerated by healthy dogs and supports the use of radioiodinated hypericin in a combination therapy for canine cancer patients.

Abstract
In the first part of this review article, thyroid anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology are reviewed to continue more specifically on hyperthyroidism, the most common thyroid disorder in cats. The diagnostic work-up of this disorder is discussed with emphasis on thyroid gland imaging. Scintigraphy is most commonly used and best suited to assess thyroid function, which will be discussed extensively in the second part of this review article. All other available imaging modalities do not offer a functional assessment and are therefore of limited use in the diagnosis and evaluation of hyperthyroidism.

Abstract
Although real-time ultrasonography is feasible in awake cats, cats are frequently anesthetized with propofol, if they are uncooperative or during perioperative ultrasonographic examinations. Propofol induces hypotension in cats and may cause venous vasodilation that redistributes blood volume in abdominal organs and organomegaly. In this paper, ultrasonographic adrenal measurements are compared before and during intravenous propofol anesthesia in healthy cats. No significant effect of propofol anesthesia on adrenal size was found, and the observed differences were small and clinically irrelevant. Therefore, it can be concluded that propofol anesthesia does not prevent ultrasonographic diagnosis of adrenomegaly.

Abstract
Background Prognostic markers for dogs with thyroid tumors are limited. Hypothesis/Objectives To identify clinical, pathologic, and immunohistochemical prognostic factors for dogs with thyroid tumors. Animals Seventy dogs with thyroid neoplasia. Methods Retrospective study. Dogs with thyroid neoplasia were included when follow‐up information and formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded tumor samples were available. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed for thyroglobulin, calcitonin, Ki‐67, and E‐cadherin. Correlation of tumor variables (diameter, volume, localization, scintigraphic uptake, thyroid function, IHC) with local invasiveness and metastatic disease was performed on all tumor samples. Forty‐four dogs treated by thyroidectomy were included in a survival analysis. Results Fifty dogs (71%) had differentiated follicular cell thyroid carcinoma (dFTC) and 20 (29%) had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). At diagnosis, tumor diameter (P = .007; P = .038), tumor volume (P = .020), tumor fixation (P = .002), ectopic location (P = .002), follicular cell origin (P = .044), and Ki‐67 (P = .038) were positively associated with local invasiveness; tumor diameter (P = .002), tumor volume (P = .023), and bilateral location (P = .012) were positively associated with presence of distant metastases. Forty‐four dogs (28 dFTC, 16 MTC; stage I–III) underwent thyroidectomy. Outcome was comparable between dogs with dFTC and MTC. Macroscopic (P = .007) and histologic (P = .046) vascular invasion were independent negative predictors for disease‐free survival. Although time to presentation, histologic vascular invasion and Ki‐67 were negatively associated with time to metastases, and time to presentation was negatively associated with time to recurrence, no independent predictors were found. E‐cadherin expression was not associated with outcome. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Prognostic factors have been identified that provide relevant information for owners and clinicians.

Abstract
In this study the use of the high resolution Micro-Single Photon Emission Tomography (HiSPECT) system with a radioactive bonemarker, (99m)Tc-oxidronate, was evaluated in dogs with coronoid pathology and/or flexor enthesopathy. Sixty-five elbows of 34 dogs were included. CT and HiSPECT were performed on all elbows, arthroscopy on 59. Tracer uptake in 8 anatomical regions was graded according to two models. Increased activity in the medial epicondylar region was associated with flexor pathology on CT (P=0.0002) and arthroscopy (P<0.0001) and increased uptake in the medial coronoid (P<0.0001) and the medial condylar area (P<0.013) with coronoid pathology. Uptake in the remaining areas was not associated with both pathologies. In conclusion, the improved resolution of the HiSPECT system allows identification of increased tracer uptake in the anatomical regions involved in coronoid pathology and flexor enthesopathy. This modality may improve the diagnostic potential of the bone scan in canine elbow disease.

Scintigraphy is an extremely sensitive tool for the detection of early changes in bone metabolism. Sixty-eight lame dogs underwent a scintigraphic examination. For each elbow lateromedial (LM), caudomedial (CdM) flexed and caudomedial (CdM) extended scintigraphic views were obtained. Semi-quantitative analysis was performed to determine radiopharmaceutical uptake at the medial coronoid process (MCP) and at the attachment of the flexor muscles at the medial humeral epicondyle, normalised to activity registered in either the total elbow joint or the radius/ulna. MCP pathology/flexor enthesopathies were divided into simple (containing one abnormality) or complex (containing more than one abnormality) lesions. The influence of different views or normalisation procedures on sensitivity and specificity was evaluated. MCP lesions were detected on radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and/or arthroscopy in 49 elbows, with 13 simple and 36 complex lesions. Flexor enthesopathy was diagnosed in 54 elbows, with 14 simple and 40 complex lesions. In seven elbows only degenerative changes were present, whereas in 50 elbows no abnormalities could be detected. MCP lesions were best detected with the CdM extended view, whereas for flexor enthesopathy the CdM flexed view offered the best result. To detect simple lesions, the normalisation procedure to the elbow gave the best result, whereas normalisation to the radius/ulna was the best choice for complex lesions. This study suggests that semi-quantification is a valuable method in case of simple pathology, especially when MCP lesions are considered. For elbows with complex lesions, the quantification procedure is less reliable.

Abstract
Recombinant human thyrotropin (rhTSH) was developed after bovine thyrotropin (bTSH) was no longer commercially available. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) as an aid to diagnostic follow-up of differentiated thyroid carcinoma in humans and for thyroid remnant ablation with radioiodine. In addition, rhTSH is used in human medicine to evaluate thyroid reserve capacity and to enhance radioiodine uptake in patients with metastatic thyroid cancer and multinodular goiter. Likewise, rhTSH has been used in veterinary medicine over the last decade. The most important veterinary use of rhTSH is thyroidal functional reserve testing for the diagnosis of canine hypothyroidism. Recent pilot studies performed at Ghent University in Belgium have investigated the use of rhTSH to optimize radioiodine treatment of canine thyroid carcinoma and feline hyperthyroidism. Radioiodine treatment optimization may allow a decreased therapeutic dosage of radioiodine and thus may improve radioprotection. This review outlines the current uses of rhTSH in human and veterinary medicine, emphasizing research performed in dogs and cats, as well as potential future applications.

Abstract
In human medicine, recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone (rhTSH) increases thyroid radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU), allowing radioiodine-131 ((131)I) dose reduction and greater efficacy in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer and multinodular goiter. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of rhTSH, administered 24 h and 48 h before radioiodine-123 ((123)I), on the thyroid RAIU in healthy dogs. Seven healthy euthyroid beagles were randomly allocated to 3 groups (2 groups of 2 dogs and 1 group of 3 dogs) in a prospective, blinded, crossover study. At Week 1, 1 group received (123)I for a baseline RAIU; 1 group received 100 μg of rhTSH IV 24 h before (123)I, and 1 group received 100 μg of rhTSH IV 48 h before (123)I. All dogs received 37 MBq of radioactive (123)I IV, and thyroid RAIU was determined 8 h, 24 h, and 48 h thereafter. The study was designed in such a manner that each dog received the 3 treatments and a wash-out period of 3 wk was respected in between. Blood samples were taken for measurement of serum total thyroxine (TT4) and thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations at baseline and 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 48 h after rhTSH administration. Recombinant human TSH caused no significant change on thyroid RAIU. The overall mean thyroid RAIU significantly decreased during the study independent of the treatment. Recombinant human TSH significantly increased serum TT4 concentration, which peaked 6 h after rhTSH administration. Compared to baseline, serum TSH concentration remained higher at 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 48 h. However, a statistically significant difference was reached only at 6 h and 12 h after rhTSH administration. No adverse effects of rhTSH were observed during the study. Further studies are needed to determine the best timing and dosage of administration of rhTSH in healthy and thyroid carcinoma dogs.

Abstract
Hyperthyroidism can mask co-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Previous studies showed that post-treatment renal azotemia can be predicted by pre-treatment assessment of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). We hypothesized that treatment of hyperthyroidism may have different effects on glomerular and tubular function and these changes might be predicted by additional pre-treatment variables than GFR. Serum total T4 (TT4), creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood pressure (BP), body weight (BW), GFR, urine specific gravity (USG), urinary protein/creatinine ratio (UPC) and retinol binding protein/creatinine ratio (uRBP/c) were evaluated before and 1, 4, 12 and 24 weeks post-treatment with radioiodine ((131)I) in 21 non-azotemic hyperthyroid cats. Cats were divided 24 weeks post-treatment into group A (normal kidney function, n=16) and group B (impaired kidney function, n=5). Serum TT4, GFR, UPC and uRBP/c decreased significantly after treatment for the complete group and group A (P<0.05), although GFR and uRBP/c did not change in group B. Serum creatinine and BW increased significantly from 1 week after treatment (P<0.05). There was no change in BUN, USG or BP. Pre-treatment serum TT4, GFR and USG differed significantly between group A and B (P<0.05). GFR at 4 weeks after treatment and maximum decrease in GFR could be partially predicted by a formula using pre-treatment GFR, serum TT4, serum creatinine, BUN and/or USG. Significant changes in kidney function occur within 4 weeks post-treatment and none thereafter. Pre-treatment measurement of GFR, USG and serum TT4 can have possible predictive value regarding the development of post-treatment renal azotemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the diagnostic merits of scintigraphy in dogs with clinically obscure lameness origin. METHODS In 43 dogs, the scintigraphic findings were compared with the results of subsequent radiological, computed tomography and/or arthroscopic findings and/or additional neurological examination. RESULTS In all dogs, focal increased uptake was found in one or more joints or bones. The presence of associated pathology was confirmed by radiography, computed tomography and/or arthroscopy of the limb region of interest. Additional neurological examination was performed when indicated. In cases of elbow pathology, unilateral involvement of the elbow was confirmed with computed tomography/arthroscopy in 14 cases, while bilateral increased uptake could not be confirmed with radiography or computed tomography in three cases. Three dogs showed an increased activity in one joint on the bone scan, while computed tomography, arthroscopy or radiography revealed bilateral joint disease. Generalised mild increased radionuclide uptake in all joints and bones was observed in the lame limb in 15 forelimbs and five hindlimbs. Generalised prominent uptake of an entire limb was noted in three cases suffering from neurological disease. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Scintigraphy may provide information on areas of increased radionuclide uptake, thereby aiding in the localisation of obscure lameness. Generalised mild increased uptake of radionuclide in all joints and bones in the lame limb may occur in the older dog. The generalised prominent uptake, seen in three cases with neurological disease, may resemble reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome seen in human beings.

Abstract
[123I]-iodo-L-phenylalanine was successfully evaluated for gamma camera imaging in vivo in tumor-bearing athymic mice and in humans with brain tumors. Here, we report the use of this tracer in two dogs with synovial cell sarcoma of the tarsus. [123I]-iodo-L-phenylalanine was quantitatively prepared as a kit formulation using the Cu(1+) +-assisted nucleophilic exchange. Rapid [123I]-2-iodo-L-phenylalanine tumor accumulation was observed with good tumor to background contrast and rapid clearance in these two dogs. This radiopharmaceutical is a promising alternative tumor tracer to overcome the known limitations of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose and, when labelled with radioiodine-131, has the potential to be used for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
This review describes the advantages and disadvantages of radiography, ultrasonography, and nuclear medicine in the 2 most frequent thyroid pathologies of the dog: acquired primary hypothyroidism and thyroid neoplasia. Ultrasonography and scintigraphy remain the 2 most indicated imaging modalities for these thyroid abnormalities. However, as in human medicine, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging also have potential indications. This is especially the case in the evaluation of the extent, local invasiveness, and local or distant metastases of thyroid neoplasia. Based on experience with different imaging modalities in people, we suggest future directions in the imaging of the canine thyroid gland.

Abstract
The analysis of iodinated peptides resulting from chloramine-T (CAT), Iodo-Beads, Iodo-Gen and lactoperoxidase iodination reactions in the preparation of nanomole quantities 125I and 123I labelled tracers is described. Seven different model peptides were evaluated, varying in molecular weight from 294 (LY-dipeptide) to 2518 (obestatin containing 23 amino acid residues). Two different RP-C18 columns were used, each with a different gradient system based on aqueous formic acid and acetonitrile. Electrospray ionization (ESI) ion trap mass spectrometry was used for identification of the chromatographic eluting components of the reaction mixtures, while UV (DAD) served quantitative purposes. Non-, mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-iodinated peptides (respectively NIP, MIP, DIP, 3IP and 4IP) eluted in that order and were well separated from each other. An empirical model was derived. The applicability of this approach was demonstrated by the analysis of different reaction mixtures.

Abstract
The involvement of the serotonergic system in the pathophysiology of suicidal behaviour has been established through indirect and direct research on serotonin and its metabolites and on serotonin transporters and receptors. Indirect research results include a reduced 5-HIAA in cerebrospinal fluid in violent suicide attempters and a blunted increase in prolactin after a fenfluramine challenge. Direct post-mortem research demonstrated an increase in 5-HT2A receptors. Direct in vivo functional imaging with PET or SPECT demonstrated a reduction in 5-HT2A binding index in suicide attempts in anxious and depressed suicide attempters and an increase in 5-HT2A binding in impulsive suicide attempters. These results are in keeping with 5-HT2A binding studies in depressed patients and impulsive animal research. Interestingly, both an increase and a decrease in 5-HT2A binding index seem to normalize with SSRI treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Involvement of the serotonergic system in impulsive aggression has been demonstrated in both human and animal studies. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of citalopram hydrobromide (a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) on the 5-HT(2A) receptor and brain perfusion in impulsive-aggressive dogs by means of single-photon emission computed tomography. METHODS The binding index of the radioligand (123)I-5-I-R91150 was measured before and after treatment with citalopram hydrobromide in nine impulsive-aggressive dogs. Regional perfusion was measured with (99m)Tc-ethyl cysteinate dimer (ECD). Behaviour was assessed before treatment and again after 6 weeks of treatment. RESULTS A correlation was found between decreased binding and behavioural improvement in eight out of nine dogs. The 5-HT(2A) receptor binding index was significantly reduced after citalopram hydrobromide treatment in all cortical regions but not in the subcortical area. None of the dogs displayed alterations in perfusion on the post-treatment scans. CONCLUSION This study supports previous findings regarding the involvement of the serotonergic system in impulsive aggression in dogs in general. More specifically, the effect of treatment on the 5-HT(2A) receptor binding index could be demonstrated and the decreased binding index correlated with behavioural improvement.

Abstract
The pattern of the specific 5-HT2A (5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptor) antagonist 123I-5-I-R91150 was measured in 10 healthy dogs without neurologic and behavior abnormalities. Eight cortical regions (left and right fronto-, temporo-, parieto-, and occipitocortical area), one global subcortical region (including the thalamic system) were compared with a reference region lacking receptors; that is, the cerebellum. The 123I labeled radioligand was injected intravenously 100-200 minutes before acquisition. Both transmission and emission data were obtained with a triple head gamma camera equipped with high-resolution fanbeam collimators. The emission data were corrected for scatter and attenuation. To delineate different cerebral regions more accurately, the regions of interest (ROI) defined in a former study on brain perfusion measured with 99mTc-ethyl cysteinate dimer (ECD) in the same dogs were used. The co-registration of the 99mTc-ECD and the 123I-5-I-R91150, obtained from each dog, was realized with the help of corresponding transmission maps. By normalizing each regional cerebral activity to the activity observed in the cerebellum, the regional radioactivity (binding index) could be relatively quantified. Highest brain uptake was noted in the frontocortical brain areas (right: 1.85, left: 1.89), followed by the temporocortical region (right: 1.58, left: 1.56). Least uptake was noted in the more caudal and middle brain regions [occipito- (right: 1.46, left: 1.41), parietocortical (right: 1.30, left: 1.26), and striatal region (1.19)]. No gender nor age influence was noted in this series. The 123I labeled serotonin-2A receptor ligand seems to have similar cortical binding in the normal canine brain, as shown in humans and other animal species. A frontocortical to occipitocortical (rostrocaudal) binding index gradient was identified within the dog, which has not been seen in imaging studies from humans and other animal species. The significance of these results will need further investigation. This normative data can be used to compare regional brain uptake of the 123I-radioligand to dogs with behavioral disorders related to the serotonergic system, in future studies.

Abstract
There is increasing interest in mapping receptors in vivo by using functional imaging modalities such as single photon emission tomography (SPET) and positron emission tomography (PET). Since SPET is a more accessible functional imaging modality than PET and, overall, it is more economical, radioligands suitable for this technique are in greater demand. Recently, 123I-5-I-R91150, a radioligand with high selectivity and affinity for 5-HT(2A) receptors in the brain, was introduced for SPET. This study reports on the whole-body distribution and brain uptake of the selective 123I-5-I-R91150 ligand in four normal dogs. The frontal to cerebellar ratio of uptake in time was determined in three dogs. Time-activity curve of venous blood was determined in one dog. Maximal global brain uptake was found at 10-60 min post-injection. Higher brain uptake was noted in the frontal cortical areas compared to the cerebellum. The frontal-cerebellar ratio reached the highest values at 90-180 min. Reversibility and pharmacological selectivity of ligand binding was demonstrated through displacement and blocking studies with the 5-HT(2A) receptor antagonist ketanserin. This study demonstrates that the specific 5-HT(2A) iodinated ligand can be used for imaging and semi-quantification of the 5-HT(2A) receptors in the canine brain in vivo by using SPET.

Abstract
This case report describes the use of the 99mTc-labeled radiopharmaceutical ciprofloxacin (Infecton) in a case of hip prosthesis loosening in a dog. Serial planar radiographs were not conclusive, and culture of the synovial fluid was negative. Antibiotic treatment did not result in improvement of the lameness. Scintigraphy was performed with 99-Tc-Infecton, a tracer claimed to be specific for infection. Antibiotic treatment was interrupted 6 weeks prior to the examination. Planar and tomographic images at 3 h and at 24 h postinjection showed increased activity along the acetabulum and the proximal femoral bone surrounding the femoral prosthesis, indicating focal infection. Bacteriology performed after removal of the implant revealed Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract
Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the brain using perfusion tracers allows estimation of regional brain perfusion. This allows in vivo examination of brain function in the setting of neuropsychologic and pathophysiologic changes. However functional imaging data on brain perfusion in dogs are limited. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the scintigraphic regional perfusion pattern of the normal canine brain. Ten healthy shepherd type dogs were injected with 925 MBq Technetium-99m ethyl cysteinate (ECD) 20 minutes before the examination. Acquisition was performed using a triple head gamma camera equipped with fanbeam collimators. Uniform attenuation correction and triple energy window correction were applied. Computed tomographic images were obtained from the same dogs, reoriented along the orbito-meatal axis and SPECT perfusion data were coregistered to the CT-volume data. Based on morphological and suggested brain divisions, regions-of-interest (ROIs) were defined for the bilateral frontocerebral, temporocerebral, parietocerebral, occipitocerebral, cerebellar, thalamic, and striatal area. Regional count density was normalized on total counts. All dogs had the highest uptake in the thalamic/striatal area compared to a rather homogeneous cerebral uptake. No significant left/right count differences were found, but a rostro-caudal gradient (+12-13%) was present. In this group, age and gender did not influence the perfusion pattern.

Abstract
The clinical and radiographic findings in 21 ponies with laminitis and its treatment and results are described. All ponies received non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. All were fed hay and no concentrates. They were box rested for varying periods depending on clinical improvement. Dorsal hoof wall resection was performed in 11 ponies and all regained complete soundness. To shorten the period of non-activity, working ponies were shod and the hoof wall defect was packed with technovit or a combination of glue with cotton cuttings. Ten were treated conservatively; two recovered completely, four remained lame and four were killed because of recurrent laminitis.
