Abstract
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is the most common form of post-transplant glomerulonephritis. We describe a case where a biopsy proved that early recurrence of FSGS on postoperative day 1 was the cause of delayed graft function. A 39-year-old man, on hemodialysis for 15 years due to polycystic kidney disease, received a cadaveric renal transplantation. On postoperative day 1, his hourly urine output decreased from 700-800 mL to 50 mL. The graft biopsy showed a mild acute kidney injury confusing nephrotic syndrome. On postoperative day 45, his creatinine level increased to 3.02 mg/dL with severe proteinuria. A kidney biopsy showed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. On postoperative day 120, his creatinine level elevated again, concomitant with proteinuria. A kidney biopsy showed FSGS with antibody-mediated rejection. After plasmapheresis, his creatinine level decreased to 1.3 mg/dL with mild proteinuria. Once active in the allograft, de novo FSGS is a potentially aggressive process. In this case, it could be managed because of an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abscess of native kidney is a rare postoperative event after renal transplantation. This report describes a case of back pain, fever and pyuria caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) in a patient who underwent renal-transplantation. CASE REPORT A 40-year-old man, presenting with hypertension and renal failure, underwent renal transplantation 1 month previously. He developed sudden intense back pain and fever (39°C). There was normal blood flow in graft kidney but there were the swelling and cyst of right native kidney. We aspirated the pus in native kidney and performed the native nephrectomy. The carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) was isolated as in pus and native kidney. We performed the tigecyline monotherapy during 3 weeks. He recovered without complication after treatment. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, no report in the literature to date describes abscess in native kidney secondary to CRAB in a renal transplant. Infections caused by CRAB have become critical for immunosuppressed patients. The presence of complication greater risk, by an organism whose pathogenicity and virulence are not yet elucidated should determine an aggressive empirical antimicrobial therapy.

Abstract
The current study was designed to estimate the pork quality traits using metabolites from exsanguination blood and postmortem muscle simultaneously under the Korean standard pre- and post-slaughter conditions. A total of 111 Yorkshire (pure breed and castrated male) pigs were evaluated under the Korean standard conditions. Measurements were taken of the levels of blood glucose and lactate at exsanguination, and muscle glycogen and lactate content at 45 min and 24 h postmortem. Certain pork quality traits were also evaluated. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis including stepwise regression were performed. Exsanguination blood glucose and lactate levels were positively correlated with each other, negatively related to postmortem muscle glycogen content and positively associated with postmortem muscle lactate content. A rapid and extended postmortem glycolysis was associated with high levels of blood glucose and lactate, with high muscle lactate content, and with low muscle glycogen content during postmortem. In addition, these were also correlated with paler meat color and reduced water holding capacity. The results of multiple regression analyses also showed that metabolites in exsanguination blood and postmortem muscle explained variations in pork quality traits. Especially, levels of blood glucose and lactate and content of muscle glycogen at early postmortem were significantly associated with an elevated early glycolytic rate. Furthermore, muscle lactate content at 24 h postmortem alone accounted for a considerable portion of the variation in pork quality traits. Based on these results, the current study confirmed that the main factor influencing pork quality traits is the ultimate lactate content in muscle via postmortem glycolysis, and that levels of blood glucose and lactate at exsanguination and contents of muscle glycogen and lactate at postmortem can explain a large portion of the variation in pork quality even under the standard slaughter conditions.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) encoded by the myosin heavy chain (MHC) genes are muscle-specific miRNAs (myomiRs) and regulate the expression of MHC isoforms in skeletal muscle. These miRNAs have been implicated in muscle fibre types and their characteristics by affecting the heterogeneity of myosin. In pigs, miR-208b and miR-499 are embedded in introns of MYH7 and MYH7b respectively. Here, we identified a novel single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in intron 30 of MYH7 by which porcine miR-208b is encoded. Based on the association study using a total of 487 pigs including Berkshire (n = 164), Landrace (n = 121) and Yorkshire (n = 202), the miR-208b SNP (g.17104G>A) had significant effects on the proportions of types I and IIb fibre numbers (P < 0.010) among muscle fibre characteristics and on drip loss (P = 0.012) in meat quality traits. Moreover, the SNP affected the processing of primary miR-208b into precursor miR-208b with a marginal trend towards significance (P = 0.053), thereby leading to significant changes in the levels of mature miR-208b (P = 0.009). These SNP-dependent changes in mature miR-208b levels were negatively correlated with the expression levels of its target gene, SOX-6 (P = 0.038), and positively associated with the expression levels of its host gene, MYH7 (P = 0.046). Taken together, our data suggest that the porcine miR-208b SNP differentially represses the expression of SOX-6 by regulating miRNA biogenesis, thereby affecting the expression of MYH7 and the traits of muscle fibre characteristics and meat quality.

Abstract
A high level of androstenone in porcine adipose tissue is a major factor contributing to boar taint. Porcine hydroxy-delta-5-steroid dehydrogenase, 3 beta- and steroid delta-isomerase 1 (3β-HSD, also known as HSD3B1) plays a key role in the hepatic metabolism that catalyzes androstenone to β-androstenol. Therefore, 3β-HSD is a candidate gene for boar taint. This study aimed to investigate functional 3β-HSD polymorphisms in Duroc pigs. We found eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the full-length porcine 3β-HSD. Four of the SNPs had restriction enzyme sites, and we genotyped them in 147 uncastrated male Duroc pigs using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Pigs with the GG genotype at the g.165262G>A locus (SNP5) had significantly lower androstenone levels than did those with other genotypes (P = 0.030). SNP5 also was associated with differences in 3β-HSD mRNA levels: pigs with the GG genotype had higher levels than those with other genotypes (P = 0.019). The SNP5 polymorphism could affect the hepatic catabolism of androstenone and consequently impact androstenone accumulation in the adipose tissue. Therefore, SNP5 in the 3β-HSD of Duroc pigs could be a useful selective marker for decreasing boar taint.

Abstract
Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the porcine MYOD1 gene were used for association analysis and haplotype construction to evaluate the effects of their substitution. Four hundred and three pigs of Yorkshire and Berkshire breeds were used. The mRNA expression levels of MYOD1 were examined. The g.489C>T and g.1264C>A SNPs were significantly associated with several muscle fiber characteristics, the loin eye area, and lightness. Particularly, animals having hetero-genotypes of both sites showed good performance both in lean meat production and meat quality traits. The results of haplotype substitution were similar to the associations of individual SNPs. Moreover, the 2 SNPs had significant effects on mRNA expression. Therefore, the g.489C>T and g.1264C>A SNPs in MYOD1 may be meaningful DNA markers that can be used for improving important porcine economic traits.

Abstract
The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1A (encoded by PPARGC1A) is involved in the formation of type I fibres. Therefore, the PPARGC1A gene can be considered as a functional candidate gene for muscle fibre type composition and meat quality in pigs. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of the p.C430S polymorphic site in exon 8 of the PPARGC1A gene with muscle fibre characteristics and meat quality traits. The polymorphism was genotyped by PCR-RFLP using AluI restriction enzyme on a total of 152 Yorkshire pigs. Statistical analyses revealed that the p.C430S genotypes significantly affected number (P < 0.05) and area (P < 0.01) of type I muscle fibre, and were significantly associated with muscle pH (P < 0.001) and lightness(P < 0.01). On the basis of these results, we suggest that the p.C430S polymorphism can induce variation of type I fibre formation in porcine longissimus dorsi muscle and that it can be used as a meaningful molecular marker for better meat quality.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare parameters associated with pork quality, muscle fiber, and eating quality among various breeds, and to examine if differences in eating quality were associated to pork quality and muscle fiber characteristics. For carcass and pork quality, although there were significant differences among breeds, the values of parameters in all pigs were assigned a normal quality class, a likely outcome of the similarity in the area percentage of type I and IIB fibers. For eating quality, pork loins from Berkshire pigs were more tender and full of pork flavor than Landrace and Yorkshire pigs. Except juiciness and mouth coating, over 20% of the variability in the eating quality parameters can be explained by pork quality traits and muscle fiber characteristics using multiple regression analysis. Furthermore, differences in muscle pH(24h), cooking loss, shear force, and NPPC marbling score could explain a large proportion of variation in eating quality parameters associated with the texture of pork.

Abstract
The objective was to examine the relationship of trained panel sensory scores of cooked pork with fatty acid composition, muscle fiber type, and meat quality characteristics from Berkshire pigs. No or few associations were found between the panel sensory scores of cooked meat, especially tenderness attributes, and fatty acid composition; however, intramuscular fat content positively correlated with off-flavor score (r=0.31). On the other hand, the morphological characteristics of muscle fibers were correlated with panel sensory values. Muscles with smaller cross-sectional area and higher density of fibers were more closely associated with softer, more tender panel scores and a lower number of chews than muscles with larger fiber area and lower density of fibers. The water holding capacity test of filter-paper fluid uptake was moderately correlated with panel scores of softness (r=0.33), initial tenderness (r=0.38), chewiness (r=0.40), juiciness (r=-0.27), flavor intensity (r=-0.23), and off-flavor (r=0.30). Panel sensory values of Berkshire pig meat was moderately related to postmortem meat quality, especially water holding capacity. A more thorough understanding of the relationships between fatty acid composition and muscle fiber type with palatability is needed.

Abstract
Pig breeding is aimed at improving lean meat production ability as well as meat quality, and muscle fibre characteristics may be important for enhancing these traits. Therefore, new molecular markers have been demanded for selecting lean meat production ability and meat quality in live animals. Myogenin belongs to the MyoD gene family, and is a candidate gene responsible for muscle fibre characteristics. We identified a new single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) site in the 5' upstream region of the myogenin gene (nucleotides C and T). A total of 252 pigs of three breeds were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism using BspCNI. Additionally, they were genotyped for the previously detected MspI site in the 3'-flanking region (alleles A and B). The CCBB diplotype had the highest frequency over breeds, followed by TCBB and CCAB. The other diplotypes were not found in studied pigs. Association analysis performed for the markers found that the TCBB diplotype has desirable effects on the total number of fibres (p < 0.002), fibre cross-sectional area (p < 0.06), and loin eye area (p < 0.001) than the other diplotypes. Moreover, the diplotype had the highest muscle pH value (p < 0.07) and all meat quality traits were near the upper limit of the normal range as a reddish pink, firm and non-exudative (RFN) pork. Therefore, we suggest that selection for the myogenin diplotypes could improve total muscle fibre number, size and lean meat production ability with good meat quality.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of the study was to conduct a preliminary clinical trial to assess whether adjunctive topical corticosteroids improve outcomes in bacterial keratitis and, if no difference was found, to determine the feasibility and sample size necessary for conducting a larger trial to answer this question. METHODS In this single centre, double-masked clinical trial, 42 patients with culture-confirmed bacterial keratitis at Aravind Eye Hospital in India were randomised to receive either topical prednisolone phosphate or placebo. All patients received topical moxifloxacin. The primary outcome was best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) at 3 months, adjusting for enrolment BSCVA and arm. Other pre-specified outcomes included re-epithelialisation time, infiltrate/scar size and adverse events. RESULTS Compared with placebo, patients in the steroid group re-epithelialised more slowly (hazard ratio 0.47, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.94). There was no significant difference in BSCVA or infiltrate/scar size at 3 weeks or 3 months. To have 80% power to detect a two-line difference in acuity, 360 cases would be required. CONCLUSIONS Although corticosteroid treatment resulted in a statistically significant delay in re-epithelialisation, this did not translate to a significant difference in visual acuity, infiltrate/scar size or adverse events. To assess the effect of steroids on acuity, a larger trial is warranted and feasible.

Abstract
This study examined the relation between glycogen, lactate content and muscle fiber type composition, and evaluated their influence on postmortem glycolytic rate and meat quality. Muscle samples were classified based on their glycogen and lactate content at 45min postmortem. Muscles with low glycogen and high lactate levels showed low muscle pH(45min) and high R-values. However, muscles with low glycogen and lactate levels showed normal rates of postmortem glycolysis and normal meat quality. On the other hand, muscles with high glycogen and lactate content showed rapid postmortem glycolysis, paler surface color, higher drip loss, and higher extents of protein denaturation than muscles with high glycogen and low lactate content. These results may be partially explained by muscle fiber type composition. Muscles with low glycogen and lactate content at early postmortem are composed of significantly higher fiber type I and lower fiber type IIB as compared to muscles with high glycogen and lactate content.

Abstract
T helper type 1 (Th1) cells perform a critical role in fighting intracellular organisms, and interleukin-12 (IL-12) is known to promote a Thl response. This study was conducted to identify whether an IL-12-independent Th1 reaction is induced by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in human beings. It was found that different intracellular microorganisms could induce IFNgamma but not IL-12 production. Induction of IFNgamma production by VZV was associated with IFNalpha production and phosphorylation of both the signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 (STAT-1) and STAT-4 in lymphocytes. In contrast, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) induced IL-12 production in association with STAT-4 but not STAT-1 activation. Anti-IFNalpha but not anti-IL-12 antibodies blocked the VZV-induced Th1 polarization. A patient with an IL-12 receptor beta1 chain deficiency showed a normal VZV- but not a normal BCG-induced Th1 reaction, further supporting the concept of an IFNalpha-mediated, IL-12-independent Th1 reaction in response to certain intracellular infections. Identification of the early Th1 polarization induced by IFNalpha versus IL-12 in response to specific viruses may enable the development of better therapeutic strategies tailored to different infections.

Abstract
As much of the sterilization process involves heat treatment during the preparation of milk on an industrial scale, the unpredictable measures of the process are an essential issue in determining the quality of the milk. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the major protein change(s) of whey proteins in processed milk and extend the knowledge for future reference in the dairy industry. Using a native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, we showed almost a 90% loss and denaturation of beta-lactoglobulin (LG), but not alpha-lactalbumin (LA), in some brands of the processed and dry milks. Immunochemical analysis using Western blotting revealed that part of the loss was attributed to the formation of large multiple forms of LG in the processed product. Such denaturation was presumably associated with the heating procedure used in the process. Essentially, LG was the only major fraction converted to aggregates in milk heated at 95 degrees C for 30 min on 2-dimensional PAGE. The detailed thermal denaturation of purified LG and LA at various temperatures (50 to 95 degrees C) and time (5 to 960 s) were investigated using a circular dichroic analysis. The maximal changes of ellipticity at 205 nm (converting beta-structure to disordered structure) were correlated to heating temperature and time. There were no significant conformational changes of LG at temperatures below 70 degrees C for as long as 480 s. Pronounced and rapid changes occurred between 80 to 95 degrees C in a time-dependent manner. Fifty percent of the maximal changes could be reached within 15 s. In conclusion, the unique chemical and immunochemical loss and conformational changes made LG a superior marker for evaluating the thermal processing of milk. The detailed thermal denaturation curves of LG constructed with its time and temperature in this study provide a valuable reference for the dairy industry. We postulate that heat treatment over 80 degrees C in 15 s may induce a significant denaturation of milk LG.

Abstract
Neonates are known to have poor cellular immunity, especially poor Th1 response. We investigated how neonatal mononuclear cells raised different Th1/Th2 reactions in response to different antigens. Employing Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) extract and varicella zoster virus (VZV) as antigens, we assessed Th1/Th2 reactions as demonstrated by IL-4/IFNgamma production and mRNA expression, and transcriptional factors T-bet/GATA-3 mRNA expression in mononuclear cells from human umbilical cord blood (CBMC). Results showed that VZV induced a dramatic increase of IFNgamma production by adult peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), whereas VZV did not drive CBMC to release significant IFNgamma production (1614.7+/-362.0 vs. 49.0+/-29.3,p<0.005). However, Der p induced higher IFNgamma production by CBMC than VZV (298.1+/-171.8 vs. 49.0+/-29.3, P=0.047). In contrast, VZV did not induce significant IL-4 production either by CBMC or by PBMC. Der p induced a comparative IL-4 production by CBMC and PBMC (2.58+/-0.84 vs. 2.04+/-0.37, p>0.05). A real-time RT-PCR analysis of IL-4 and IFNgamma mRNA expression showed that VZV induced a significantly higher IFNgamma, but not IL-4, mRNA expression in PBMC than CBMC. Der p did not induce significant difference of IFNgamma or IL-4 mRNA expression in PBMC and CBMC. VZV enhanced Th1-related transcription factor T-bet mRNA expression, in association with later down-regulation of Th2-related GATA-3 mRNA expression in PBMC. However, VZV did not up-regulate T-bet or down-regulate GATA-3 expression significantly in CBMC. In contrast, Der p induced an early GATA-3 expression and later T-bet expression in CBMC. These results suggest that different antigens trigger various Th1/Th2 reactions in PBMC and CBMC resulting from kinetic changes of T-bet/GATA-3 expression.

Abstract
Erythema multiforme (EM) is an immune-mediated disease categorized into EM minor and EM major, also called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The presence of mucosal involvement differentiates erythema multiforme major from erythema multiforme minor. Many drugs and agents can induce Stevens-Johnson syndrome. We report a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. Lymphopenia with a significant decrease of CD4+ T cells in the blood and predominant CD4+ T cells in the skin vesicular fluid was found. The improvement of lymphopenia was associated with disease recovery. In a retrospective chart review of patients treated in our hospital over the past 3 years, we found that 5 patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome all had lymphopenia (< 1.50 x 10(9)/L; average 0.99 x 10(9)/L), whereas 13 other patients with erythema multiforme minor demonstrated normal lymphocyte counts (average 3.13 x 10(9)/L), with the exception of one patient with herpes infection showing lymphopenia. These results suggested that an immunopathogenesis involving redistribution of CD4+ T cells might contribute to the development of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Further studies to investigate the involvement of CD4+ T cells in Stevens-Johnson syndrome may implicate a specific strategy to prevent fatal Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Abstract
PURPOSE To correlate the in vivo hydrogen 1 ((1)H) magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopic features of the chronic hepatitis-involved liver with the histopathologic stages of fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-five patients with chronic hepatitis were examined with (1)H MR spectroscopy, which was performed in the right hepatic lobe. The peak areas of glutamine and glutamate complex (Glx), phosphomonoesters (PME), glycogen and glucose complex (Glyu), and lipid were measured on the liver spectra. The histopathologic features were correlated with the in vivo (1)H MR spectroscopic findings at each stage of chronic hepatitis. Fifteen healthy volunteers also were included as a control group. RESULTS (1)H MR spectroscopy depicted Glx, PME, Glyu, and lipid in all livers. In the normal livers, the calculated mean (+/- SD) relative metabolite-to-lipid ratios of Glx, PME, and Glyu were 0.14 +/- 0.04, 0.03 +/- 0.01, and 0.21 +/- 0.04, respectively. The mean value of each metabolite-to-lipid ratio was significantly different between all stages of chronic hepatitis, and with the exception of the mean ratio at the interval between stages 0 and 1 (P > .05), the mean value increased significantly with increasing stage (P < .05). A pronounced peak was demonstrated at 3.9-4.1 ppm at (1)H MR spectroscopy of all stages of chronic hepatitis except stage 0. CONCLUSION The increased Glx, PME, and Glyu levels relative to the lipid content with chronic hepatitis indicated the severity of fibrosis and thus were concordant with the histopathologic stages. In vivo (1)H MR spectroscopy might be a substitute for liver biopsy in the diagnosis and staging of chronic hepatitis.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains chemoresistant and, therefore, the principal treatment of HCC is surgical resection. After a 9-year-old boy with huge HCC with lung metastasis received the 5 cycles of chemotherapy (cisplatin and Adriamycin), the lung metastasis had been resolved completely and the size of HCC in liver had decreased. Right hepatic trisegmentectomy was performed, and then the additional 3 cycles of chemotherapy was given. Currently, the patient shows no recurrence of HCC 42 months after surgical extirpation.

Abstract
Gallbladder paraganglioma is a very rare tumor and so far only a few cases have been reported. Most of these were asymptomatic and were found incidentally during operation. Recently, we experienced a gallbladder paraganglioma that gave rise to hemorrhage, which in turn caused acute cholecystitis. Our case involved a 45 year-old female patient complaining of an intermittent right upper abdominal pain. After a preoperative evaluation, cholecystectomy and lymphadenectomy were performed under the impression of gallbladder cancer with acute cholecystitis. Postoperative pathologic examination revealed a hemorrhagic gallbladder paraganglioma accompanied by acute cholecystitis. Immunohistochemical staining of the chief cells for neuron specific enolase, chromogranin and synaptophysin were positive. Sustentacular cells also stained positively for S100 protein.

Abstract
A 54-year-old woman presented with a huge palpable mass on left upper quadrant of the abdomen. After preoperative work-up, a cystic disease of pancreatic tail or accessory spleen was initially suspected. We performed exploratory laparotomy and resected both the spleen and a 15 x 11 cm-sized huge cystic mass containing a part of solid component which extended continuously to the pancreatic tail. The solid component, comprising the upper portion of the resected cyst, was reddish brown and granular like as normal splenic tissue. The inner surface of the cyst was smooth and was filled with yellowish white material. Histologic examination showed an epidermoid cyst originating in the accessory spleen of the pancreatic tail lacking hair or skin appendages.

Abstract
Rupture of the colon caused by high pressure compressed air is a rare, unique and traumatic intra-abdominal injury. As the use of compressed air in industrial work has increased, so has the risk of associated pneumatic injuries from its improper use. Recently we experienced a case of pneumatic rupture of the sigmoid colon accompanied by tension pneumoperitoneum, which caused respiratory distress. The patient's respiration was very rapid with the rate of 44 breaths per minute. On arterial blood gas analysis, pH was 7.40, pO2 68 mmHg, pCO2 44 mmHg, and SaO2 90%. Chest X-ray film showed marked pneumoperitoneum and an elevated diaphragm. The respiratory distress was severe and required immediate relief by emergency decompression peritoneocentesis before surgical intervention consisting of the serosal tear repair, colonic rupture colostomy and abdominal cavity irrigation. A follow up operation 2 months later for colostomy repair completed the patient's recovery.

Abstract
We report the case of a 64-year-old man who presented with a hepatic mass and macronodular cirrhosis. The pathologic findings revealed a lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma arising in the hepatobiliary tract that was morphologically identical to nasopharyngeal undifferentiated carcinoma. However, this tumor was not associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection in molecular studies. Macronodular cirrhosis associated with hepatitis C virus was present in the background liver.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare the ability of CT angiography to depict the pancreaticoduodenal arcades and the dorsal pancreatic artery using the techniques of three-dimensional (3D) volume rendering, maximum intensity projection (MIP), and shaded-surface display (SSD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS Twenty-seven patients were selected at random from a group of 42 patients undergoing arterial-phase helical CT angiography before liver transplantation. CT angiograms were constructed from identical data sets using 3D volume rendering, MIP, and SSD. RESULTS Seventy-two vessels were evaluated in 27 patients. Three-dimensional volume rendering depicted 24 anterior and 22 posterior arcades and 26 dorsal pancreatic arteries; combined MIP and SSD depicted 14 anterior and 13 posterior arcades and 19 dorsal pancreatic arteries. Thirty vessels with diameters of between 2 and 3 mm were well seen with 3D volume rendering but were incompletely depicted with MIP and SSD. Sixteen vessels with diameters of greater than 3 mm were well seen using all three techniques. Twenty-six vessels with diameters of less than 2 mm were faintly seen with 3D volume rendering but were unidentifiable with MIP and SSD. CONCLUSION Three-dimensional volume rendering is superior to MIP and SSD in the depiction of pancreaticoduodenal arcades and dorsal pancreatic arteries. Unlike the other rendering techniques, 3D volume rendering can also show relationships between these vessels and pancreatic parenchyma and adjacent structures.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficient and phosphate deficient states were produced in young rats by the use of synthetic diets. Whole blood ATP, serum calcium and phosphorus and the ash, phospholipid, hexosamine and hydroxyproline contents of metaphyseal bones of control and rachitic rats were measured after 4 weeks on the diets. There was a decrease in whole blood ATP and serum phosphorus of the rachitic rats, and in the contents of ash, phospholipid and hexosamine of the rachitic metaphyses, while the hydroxyproline contents of the rachitic bones were higher than those of the controls. Subcutaneous injection of ATP or inorganic phosphate in rats, fed a low phosphate diet deficient in vitamin D, caused an increase in serum phosphorus and blood ATP levels and in metaphyseal ash contents. It is suggested that some of the metabolic disturbances in rickets are due to alteration in ATP production.

Abstract
Rats were injected with 17 beta-estradiol benzoate intramuscularly and the collagenolytic activity of the rat bones was assayed by measuring the degradation of purified reconstituted 3H-proline- and 3H-hydroxyproline-labeled collagen. A diminution of the collagenolytic activity which could be recovered from the culture medium of estrogen-treated rat bone was observed. However, the addition of estrogen to the enzyme using the same assay revealed no diminution of collagenolytic activity. These results suggest that the diminution of collagenolytic activity in the culture medium of estrogen-treated rat bone is due to an alteration in the production or activation of collagenolytic activity.

Abstract
The 85Sr uptake and the phospholipid, collagen, and mucopolysaccharide content of metaphyseal and diaphyseal rat bone were investigated. 85Sr uptake was higher in the metaphysis, which contains more organic material, than in the diaphysis. Metaphyseal bone contained more phospholipid, proline, hexosamine, and hexuronic acid, but less hydroxyproline, than diaphyseal bone. Lecithin, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin were the principal phosphatides of both regions of bone; metaphyseal bone contained slightly more lecithin but there were no significant differences in the percentages of the other two neutral phosphatides. The ratio of hexosamine to hexuronic acid was 1.1 for the metaphysis and 2.4 for the diaphysis. Intravenous administration of polyuronides led to a significant decrease in the strontium uptake of bone.

Sulfated polysaccharide from Hypnea japonica and 45Ca was administered into growing rat by intubation or intravenous injection. 45Ca uptake and changes in the phospholipid, collagen, and mucopolysaccharide contents of the metaphyseal and diaphyseal bone were determined. The administration of the polysaccharide caused an increase in 45Ca uptake and in the content of phospholipid and hexosamine of the matrix with a diminution in the hydroxyproline content.
