Abstract
Malignant theileriosis of sheep and goats caused by Theileria lestoquardi is considered to be among the most important tick borne diseases in the Sudan. Information on the prevalence of the disease in different parts of the Sudan is limited. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of the disease in five states of the Sudan using molecular and serological assays. A total of 393 blood and serum samples from clinically asymptomatic sheep were analysed using nested reverse line blot (nRLB) and loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), as well as an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results indicated a sero-prevalence of 33.8% while RLB and LAMP assays revealed molecular prevalences of 29.5 and 22.6% respectively. The prevalence of Theileria lestoquardi varied significantly according to the geographical origin of the infected animals, whereas age and gender did not have a significant effect. RLB data indicated that T. lestoquardi usually occurred as a co-infection with the non-pathogenic Theileria ovis. Using RLB as a gold standard, a sensitivity of 68.1% and a specificity of 96.4% were recorded for LAMP and a sensitivity of 75.9% and a specificity of 83.8% for ELISA. The Kappa coefficient between nRLB and LAMP indicated a significant level of agreement (0.692), but only moderate concordance (0.572) between nRLB and ELISA. The results of the present study confirm and extend earlier findings regarding the widespread of T. lestoquardi infections in sheep in the Sudan. The data provide evidence that should enable the veterinary authorities to deploy appropriate control measures.

Abstract
In this study the predictions and probabilities of calcium carbonate scale formation and corrosion occurrence inside Gumry Field Process Facilities (GFPF) and produced water injection process units (PWTP) was carried out. This was done calculating the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), Ryznar Stability Index (RSI), Puckorius Scaling Index (PSI). The samples results for LSI index and PSI index were compared and found that all samples under threaten of calcium carbonate scale. The samples results for RSI index and found that all samples under formation of heavy calcium carbonate scale. Special excel computer program was designed to calculate the (LSI, RSI, PSI). The scale was cleaned and removed by 10% diluted hydrochloric acid and commercial scale inhibitor.

Abstract
The prevalence of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi infections in the north-eastern Free State Province of South Africa was determined by examination of thin and thick Giemsa-stained blood smears, IFAT and PCR. No parasites were detected by microscopy from any blood samples collected at five study sites, Qwaqwa, Kestell, Harrismith, Vrede and Warden. Of the tested serum samples, 28/29 (96.5%), 20/21 (95.2%) and 42/42 (100%) were positive by IFAT for T. equi infections in Harrismith, Kestell and Qwaqwa, respectively, and 5/29 (17.2%), 13/21 (61.9%) and 30/42 (71.4%) were sero-positive for B. caballi infections in Harrismith, Kestell and Qwaqwa, respectively. All DNA samples from the study sites were negative for B. caballi infections by PCR, but five samples, two from each of Kestell and Warden and one from Vrede, were PCR positive for T. equi infections. The high prevalence of antibodies against T. equi and B. caballi in the sampled horses indicates that the animals had been exposed to T. equi and B. caballi infections but the absence of parasitaemia and very low number of positive PCR samples, however, imply that T. equi and B. caballi are endemically stable in the north-eastern Free State Province.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To define a safe and effective dose of Dysport for treating hip adductor spasticity. METHODS Patients with definite or probable multiple sclerosis, and disabling spasticity affecting the hip adductor muscles of both legs, were randomised to one of four treatment groups. Dysport (500, 1000, or 1500 Units), or placebo was administered by intramuscular injection to these muscles. Patients were assessed at entry, and 2, 4 (primary analysis time-point), 8, and 12 weeks post-treatment. RESULTS A total of 74 patients were recruited. Treatment groups were generally well matched at entry. The primary efficacy variables-passive hip abduction and distance between the knees-improved for all groups. The improvement in distance between the knees for the 1500 Unit group was significantly greater than placebo (p = 0.02). Spasm frequency was reduced in all groups, but muscle tone was reduced in the Dysport groups only. Pain was reduced in all groups, but improvements in hygiene scores were evident only in the 1000 Unit and 1500 Unit groups. Duration of benefit was significantly longer than placebo for all Dysport groups (p<0.05). Adverse events were reported by 32/58 (55%) Dysport patients, and by 10/16 (63%) placebo patients. Compared with the two lower dose groups, twice as many adverse events were reported by the 1500 Unit group (2.7/patient). The incidence of muscle weakness was higher for the 1500 Unit group (36%) than for placebo (6%). The response to treatment was considered positive by two thirds of the patients in the 500 Unit group, and by about half the patients in the other groups. CONCLUSION Dysport reduced the degree of hip adductor spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, and this benefit was evident despite the concomitant use of oral antispasticity medication and analgesics. Although evidence for a dose response effect was not statistically significant, there was a clear trend towards greater efficacy and duration of effect with higher doses of Dysport. Dysport treatment was well tolerated, with no major side effects seen at doses up to 1500 Units. The optimal dose for hip adductor spasticity seems to be 500-1000 Units, divided between both legs.

Abstract
Myasthenia gravis (MG) and experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) are caused by auto-antibodies against the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) at the postsynaptic membrane. To evaluate the extent to which the humoral immune response against AChR operates in the pathogenesis of EAMG, we immunized B-cell knockout (microMT) and wild type C57BL/6 mice with AChR in complete Freund's adjuvant. The ability of AChR-primed lymph node cells to proliferate and secrete IFN-gamma in response to AChR and its dominant peptide alpha 146-162 were intact in microMT as in wild type mice. Similar levels of mRNA for IFN-gamma, IL-4 and IL-10 in AChR-reactive lymph node cells were detected in microMT and wild type mice. However, microMT mice had no detectable anti-AChR antibodies and never developed clinical EAMG. We conclude that B-cells are critically required for the genesis of clinical EAMG, but not for AChR-specific T-cell priming.

Abstract
Disturbances of memory, concentration and motor function are often reported by patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The present study objectively evaluated these behavioural problems using a computerized test battery measuring memory, attention and motor skills. Fifty-seven CFS patients were compared with 19 matched controls and all subjects completed the performance test battery and filled in questionnaires measuring psychopathology and mood. The patients reported significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety, physical symptoms and cognitive failures than the controls. Similarly, they reported more negative affect at the time of testing. The patients were slower on psychomotor tasks, showed increased visual sensitivity and impaired attention. Digit span and free recall were not impaired but retrieval from semantic memory and logical reasoning were slower. None of the performance differences between patients and controls could be attributed to differences in psychopathology. These results agree with recent findings from other laboratories, and it is now time to consider the nature of the neurological dysfunction underlying these effects.
