Abstract
BACKGROUND Orofacial clefts are characterized by a frequent occurrence of dental anomalies. Numerous studies demonstrate the high prevalence of dental aplasia, supernumerary teeth, and hypoplastic teeth in patients with cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P), yet the therapeutic consequences are rarely discussed. This study explores prevalence, localization, and association between primary and secondary dentition in a large European collective and begins to evaluate the significance of dental anomalies in the therapeutic course of patients with CL/P. METHODS The medical reports of 1070 patients with different entities of CL/P who presented to our clinic within a 15-year investigation period were evaluated retrospectively. Dental anomalies were classified into three different diagnostic groups: dental aplasia, supernumerary teeth and hypoplastic teeth. The statistical analyses included studies of the frequency and localization of dental anomalies in different cleft entities as well as of the association between primary and secondary dentition and the therapeutic consequences. RESULTS Uni- or bilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) (47.5%) occurred most frequently, followed by cleft palate only (CPO) (32.9%) and cleft lip with or without alveolus (CL ± A) (19.6%). Dental anomalies were found significantly more often on the side of the cleft. Aplastic permanent teeth were mostly found in patients with CLP (54.8%), while supernumerary permanent teeth occurred primarily in patients with CL ± A (21.7%). Patients with CPO presented dental aplasia but no patient with CPO showed supernumerary teeth. The occurrence of dental aplasia in the primary dentition significantly increases the probability of aplastic teeth in the permanent dentition. Dental anomalies, in particular dental aplasia, significantly increase patients' need for subsequent orthodontic therapy and orthognathic surgery. CONCLUSION Dental aplasia and hypoplasia are common in patients with CL/P not only in the cleft area but in the whole dentition. In the event of dental aplasia in the primary dentition, the frequency of aplastic teeth in the permanent dentition is significantly higher. Additionally, the need for therapeutic interventions, especially concerning orthognathic surgery, seems to be significantly higher in patients with CL/P who are affected by dental anomalies. Clinicians should take this into account when creating long-term treatment plans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study is to develop and validate a specific screening instrument for assessing the quality of life (QoL) of patients with orofacial clefts. The Cleft-Screen-Questionnaire (CSQ) aims at identifying the main problematic areas and is intended for the routine use in everyday clinical practice to constantly evaluate the conditions' and treatments' effects on patients' well-being. METHODS First, a pool of 58 questions is created by collecting items from validated questionnaires previously used for assessing the QoL in cleft populations. After the removal of duplicate questions, the questionnaires are answered by 152 patients from a tertiary care center. A factor analysis followed by the calculation of Cronbach's alpha as a reliability measurement led to the final CSQ presented here. RESULTS The applied factor analysis resulted in five factors. Items showing low factor loadings (seen as <0.5) were excluded initially. Accordingly, factor analysis led to a preliminary number of 43 items. A reliability analysis using Cronbach's alpha and corrected alpha if item deleted showed an overall moderate to high reliability (seen as: 0.6-0.9). After excluding questions with increasing alphas if item deleted, analyses yielded in a final number of 38 questions. CONCLUSION The final 38-item CSQ is a reliable instrument for evaluating the health-related QoL of cleft patients.

Abstract
Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is the most important opportunistic pathogen in causing nosocomial infections and, furthermore, poses a permanent threat for severe chronic infections in patients with cystic fibrosis or COPD. The transmembrane protein CD26 with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) activity shows an increased expression in inflamed tissue. We tested whether CD26/DPP4 deficiency leads to reduced inflammation and decreased structural damage when infected with PA. Methods CD26/DPP4+ and CD26/DPP4− rats were instilled intratracheally with NaCl (controls) or with PA. Six hours later, bacterial distribution was detected with the in vivo imaging system 200 (IVIS). Lungs were then processed for molecular biology, light and electron microscopy and analyzed qualitatively, quantitatively and stereologically. Bacterial numbers were determined in homogenized lungs. Results Compared to saline treated controls, in both infected groups (1) the acinar airspace was significantly increased, (2) the volume density of the alveolar epithelium was significantly decreased, (3) the septal thickness was significantly reduced, (4) more than 40% of the alveolar epithelial surface was damaged, and up to 36% of the epithelial surface was covered with edema. In infected CD26− rats, the increase in lung weight was significantly less pronounced, the portion of edematous alveolar airspace was significantly lower and the part of edema interspersed with PA was decreased significantly. Conclusions CD26/DPP4 deficiency resulted in reduced pulmonary edema under sublethal PA infection, implicating a role for CD26 in infection progression. The partly pronounced structural damage may mask further possible influences of CD26 on the inflammatory response.

Abstract
We developed a high repetition rate optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) laser system based on fiber-laser-seeded Innoslab to generate few-cycle pulses around 2 µm with passively stable carrier-envelope phase (CEP) by difference frequency generation (DFG). Incorporating a piezo mirror before the DFG stage permits rapid CEP control. The OPCPA system is seeded by a stable supercontinuum generated in bulk material with the picosecond Innoslab pulses. Few-cycle pulses with durations of 17 fs and energies of over 100 μJ were produced in a single OPCPA stage. Three different nonlinear crystals: BBO, BiBO, and LNB were tested in the final parametric amplifier, and their average power related limitations are addressed.

Abstract
A simple and easy to implement technique for femtosecond pulse characterization is proposed and experimentally verified. It is based on the introduction of a known amount of dispersion (by controlling the number of passes through dispersive material) and subsequent recording of the spectral positions of second harmonic peaks obtained in a non-linear crystal. Such dependence allows for direct retrieval of the pulse spectral phase. The presented pulse characterization method is beneficial especially for broadband pulses, where the second harmonic spectrum exceeds the detection bandwidth of a single spectrometer.

Abstract
Excessive sedentary time is detrimentally linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature mortality. Studies have been investigating the use of activity-permissive workstations to reduce sedentary time in office workers, a highly sedentary target group. This review systematically summarizes the evidence for activity-permissive workstations on sedentary time, health-risk biomarkers, work performance and feasibility indicators in office workplaces. In July 2013, a literature search identified 38 relevant peer-reviewed publications. Key findings were independently extracted by two researchers. The average intervention effect on sedentary time was calculated via meta-analysis. In total, 984 participants across 19 field-based trials and 19 laboratory investigations were included, with sample sizes ranging from n = 2 to 66 per study. Sedentary time, health-risk biomarkers and work performance indicators were reported in 13, 23 and 23 studies, respectively. The pooled effect size from the meta-analysis was -77 min of sedentary time/8-h workday (95% confidence interval = -120, -35 min). Non-significant changes were reported for most health- and work-related outcomes. Studies with acceptability measures reported predominantly positive feedback. Findings suggest that activity-permissive workstations can be effective to reduce occupational sedentary time, without compromising work performance. Larger and longer-term randomized-controlled trials are needed to understand the sustainability of the sedentary time reductions and their longer-term impacts on health- and work-related outcomes.

Abstract
We study experimentally the critical depinning current I(c) versus applied magnetic field B in Nb thin films which contain 2D arrays of circular antidots placed on the nodes of quasiperiodic (QP) fivefold Penrose lattices. Close to the transition temperature T(c) we observe matching of the vortex lattice with the QP pinning array, confirming essential features in the I(c)(B) patterns as predicted by Misko et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 177007 (2005)]. We find a significant enhancement in I(c)(B) for QP pinning arrays in comparison to I(c) in samples with randomly distributed antidots or no antidots.

Abstract
We investigate experimentally a Josephson vortex ratchet--a fluxon in an asymmetric periodic potential driven by a deterministic force with zero time average. The highly asymmetric periodic potential is created in an underdamped annular long Josephson junction by means of a current injector providing an efficiency of the device up to 91%. We measured the ratchet effect for driving forces with different spectral content. For monochromatic high-frequency drive the rectified voltage becomes quantized. At high driving frequencies we also observe chaos, subharmonic dynamics, and voltage reversal due to the inertial mass of a fluxon.

Abstract
We report two cases of patients suffering from multiple tumors in the lungs with questionable origin. In these cases, the expression of Surfactant-apoprotein-A (SP-A) by the tumor cells has been a helpful feature in the process of diagnosis by indicating primary carcinomas of the lungs. Surfactant-apoprotein-A is expressed by the pneumocytes II in lung tissue and a portion of non-small cell lung carcinomas and has not yet been found to be expressed by other tumors when detected immunohistochemically by use of the monoclonal antibody PE-10. We analyzed formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens of different malignancies with pulmonary location for the expression of SP-A by the use of PE-10 with other antibodies against additional epitopes such as the thyroid transcription factor-1. In normal lung areas a distinct staining of the pneumocytes II has been observed. All the control sections of primary and metastatic nonlung-carcinoma specimen in our study remained negative. The monoclonal antibody PE-10 used in this study provides high specificity when compared to the results obtained with polyclonal antibodies. One of the two cases reported, a mucinous carcinoma of the lungs, had been negative for thyroid transcription factor-1 but positive for SP-A. Thus, SP-A detected by immunohistochemistry using the monoclonal antibody PE-10, together with other parameters such as thyroid transcription factor-1, may be a useful tool for individual diagnosis of malignomas located in the lungs with a questionable primary origin. Abstract
A disturbed cellular DNA content is of potential diagnostic and prognostic relevance in urinary bladder cancer. To evaluate the prognostic significance of individual chromosomal aberrations in superficial bladder cancer, specimens of 105 tumors (67 pTa, 38 pT1) were examined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). FISH allows quantitation of chromosomes on a cell by cell level. Centromere probes for the chromosomes Y, 1, and 17 were used. There was a strong association between polysomies of the chromosomes 1 (found in 46% of tumors) and 17 (40% of tumors, P < .0001). Polysomies (1 and 17) were significantly more frequent in pT1 than in pTa tumors (P < .0001 each). In pTa tumors, polysomies of both chromosomes were linked to a high risk of recurrences; polysomy 17 was associated with an increased risk of progression (P < .05 each). There was no significant association between polysomies and an unfavorable prognosis in pT1 carcinomas. Previous studies had suggested a prognostic role of Y losses in bladder cancer. However, Y losses were not linked to recurrences or tumor progression in pTa or pT1 tumors of 67 male patients. These data show that marked genetic differences exist between pTa and pT1 carcinomas. They also indicate that polysomies of different chromosomes may have prognostic relevance in pTa urinary bladder cancer.

Abstract
Thirty-four women with bulimia nervosa and 34 women without bulimarexic symptoms (but matched for age, weight, deviance from ideal weight, and educational status) were compared as to how liberated their attitude towards the woman's role in society (= their sex role attitude, SRA) and their actual own behavior as females (= their sex role behavior, SRB) were. The degree to which their general attitude towards sex role and their own sex role behavior differed from each other was also investigated. Experimental and control group were also compared concerning their sex role related locus of control (SRLC). SRA and SRB were significantly less liberated in the bulimarexic group than in the control group. In addition, the bulimarexic group showed a wide gap between their general attitude (SRA) and actual behavior (SRB) as to the degree of liberation. No such discrepancy was found in the control subjects. The sex related locus of control data showed that bulimarexic women had significantly higher external and fatalistic control, and lower internal control than the comparison subjects.
