Abstract
The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is an early warning system that predicts clinical deterioration. The impact of the NEWS on the outcome of healthcare remains controversial. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing an electronic version of the NEWS (E-NEWS), to reduce unexpected clinical deterioration. We developed the E-NEWS as a part of the Health Information System (HIS) and Nurse Information System (NIS). All adult patients admitted to general wards were enrolled into the current study. The “adverse event” (AE) group consisted of patients who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), were transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU) due to unexpected deterioration, or died. Patients without AE were allocated to the control group. The development of the E-NEWS was separated into a baseline (October 2018 to February 2019), implementation (March to August 2019), and intensive period (September. to December 2019). A total of 39,161 patients with 73,674 hospitalization courses were collected. The percentage of overall AEs was 6.06%. Implementation of E-NEWS was associated with a significant decrease in the percentage of AEs from 6.06% to 5.51% (p = 0.001). CPRs at wards were significantly reduced (0.52% to 0.34%, p = 0.012). The number of patients transferred to the ICU also decreased significantly (3.63% to 3.49%, p = 0.035). Using multivariate analysis, the intensive period was associated with reducing AEs (p = 0.019). In conclusion, we constructed an E-NEWS system, updating the NEWS every hour automatically. Implementing the E-NEWS was associated with a reduction in AEs, especially CPRs at wards and transfers to ICU from ordinary wards.

Abstract
Objective: Better glycemic control for hospitalized diabetic patients significantly reduces health expenditures and improves disease outcomes. We developed a dynamic dashboard with a remote management system and evaluated its impact on inpatient glycemic control. Methods: This was an observational institution-wide study; study participants were enrolled from a 1,500-bed public medical center from 2016 to 2018. We evaluated the impact of a dynamic dashboard system, which analyzed and monitored all glucose data with virtual glycemic management recommendation by a team of endocrinologists, over 3 × 1-year periods: 2016 (pre-implementation), 2017 (development), and 2018 (implementation). Results: A total of 51,641 discharges with 878,159 blood glucose measurements were obtained during the 3-year period. After implementation of the dashboard system, the proportion of patients with poor glycemic control (hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia) was reduced by 31% (from 10.2 to 7.0 per day per 100 patients with glucose monitoring; P<.001); hyperglycemia decreased by 25% (from 6.1 to 4.6 per day per 100 patients with glucose monitoring; P<.001), and hypoglycemia decreased by 45% (from 4.2 to 2.3 per day per 100 patients with glucose monitoring; P<.001). Furthermore, the trend in the proportion of patients within the treat-to-target range showed significant improvement (P<.001) during the development period, with effectiveness maintained throughout the implementation period. Conclusion: We successfully installed a dynamic, electronic medical records-based dashboard monitoring system to improve inpatient glycemic control. The system, supported by a team of endocrinologists via remote recommendations, could efficiently fill an important need for improved glycemic management among hospitalized adults. Abstract
In the present study, a hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) model of cardiomyocytes was established to investigate the effects of long non-coding RNA (LncRNA) Nuclear Enriched Abundant Transcript 1 (NEAT1) and microRNA (miR)-520a on H/R-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Flow cytometry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining were used to evaluate cell apoptosis. Luciferase activity assay was used to investigate whether miR-520a targets NEAT1. Results revealed that NEAT1 was significantly upregulated and miR-520a was downregulated in the ischemia/reperfusion myocardium and the cardiomyocytes that received H/R treatment. Further study demonstrated that knockdown of NEAT1 and overexpression of miR-520a serves a protective role against H/R-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. miR-520a directly targets NEAT1 and its expression level is negatively correlated with that of NEAT1. The findings suggested that NEAT1 and miR-520a may protect cardiomyocytes from apoptosis through regulating apoptotic proteins B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2-associated X protein, and altering cleaved caspase3 expression levels.

Abstract
RATIONALE Adult renal neuroblastoma (NB) is extremely rare, and there have been only a few cases previously described in the literature. We report a case of adult renal NB and summarize the clinical and imaging features of the reported cases. PATIENT CONCERNS A 41-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with a chief complaint of gross hematuria that had persisted for a month. Nonenhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a hypodense right renal mass without calcification. Enhanced CT showed an infiltrative, heterogeneously enhancing right renal mass with retrocaval lymphadenopathy and right renal vein thrombus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that the right renal mass was isointense relative to the renal parenchyma on nonenhanced T1-weighted images; it showed mixed hypointensity and hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, and heterogeneous enhancement with a hyperintense rim on fat-saturated, enhanced T1W images. The initial impression was renal cell carcinoma (RCC). DIAGNOSES Adult renal neuroblastoma. INTERVENTIONS Right nephroureterectomy with lymph node dissection was performed. The pathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of renal NB with retrocaval lymphadenopathy and retroperitoneal metastasis. OUTCOMES After surgery, the patient received 6 courses of chemotherapy, and no recurrence was observed during a 24-month follow-up period. LESSONS The clinical picture of adult renal NB is that of a 44-year-old woman, presenting with an abdominal or renal mass about 13cm in size, accompanied by hypertension, hematuria, or pain. In contrast to CT features described in previous literature, no tumor calcification is mentioned in these adult renal NB cases. It is difficult to differentiate renal NB from RCC based on CT or MRI. However, biopsy, urinary catecholamine levels, and metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scan may aid in presurgical diagnosis.

Abstract
Esophageal cancer (ESCC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-associated mortality in China. The present investigation reveals that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including long ncRNAs (lncRNAs), exert a significant effect on the initiation, development and metastasis of malignant tumors, including ESCC. However, to the best of our knowledge, the function of non-protein-coding genes that host small nucleolar RNAs has not been investigated in cancer, particularly in ESCC. The expression of small nucleolar host gene 6 (SNHG6) in 70 ESCC tissues and paired adjacent tissues was measured by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Analysis demonstrated that SNHG6 expression was significantly increased in ESCC tissues, and associated with tumor size (P=0.040) and Tumor-Node-Metastasis stage (P<0.01). Knockdown of SNHG6 may inhibit proliferative and colony-forming abilities, and induce apoptosis, in ESCC cells. To the best of our knowledge, the data from the present study indicated for the first time that SNHG6 was upregulated in ESCC tissues and cell lines. This novel lncRNA may exert a marked effect on the generation and progression of ESCC, potentially providing a novel perspective on ESCC diagnosis and management.

Abstract
Recent evidence indicates that E2F1 transcription factor have pivotal roles in the regulation of cellular processes, and is found to be dysregulated in a variety of cancers. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are also reported to exert important effect on tumorigenesis. E2F1 is aberrantly expressed in gastric cancer (GC), and biology functions of E2F1 in GC are controversial. The biological characteristics of E2F1 and correlation between E2F1 and lncRNAs in GC remain to be found. In this study, integrated analysis revealed that E2F1 expression was significantly increased in GC cases and its expression was positively correlated with the poor pathologic stage, large tumor size and poor prognosis. Forced E2F1 expression promotes proliferation, whereas loss of E2F1 function decreased cell proliferation by blocking of cell cycle in GC cells. Mechanistic analyses indicated that E2F1 accelerates GC growth partly through induces TINCR transcription. TINCR could bind to STAU1 (staufen1) protein, and influence CDKN2B mRNA stability and expression, thereby affecting the proliferation of GC cells. Together, our findings suggest that E2F1/TINCR/STAU1/CDKN2B signaling axis contributes to the oncogenic potential of GC and may constitute a potential therapeutic target in this disease.

Abstract
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNA) are a novel class of transcripts with no protein coding capacity, but with diverse functions in cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, and metastasis. The lncRNA PVT1 is 1,716 nt in length and located in the chr8q24.21 region, which also contains the myelocytomatosis (MYC) oncogene. Previous studies demonstrated that MYC promotes PVT1 expression in primary human cancers. However, the expression pattern and potential biologic function of PVT1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still unclear. Here, we found that PVT1 was upregulated in 105 human NSCLC tissues compared with normal samples. High expression of PVT1 was associated with a higher tumor-node-metastasis stage and tumor size, as well as poorer overall survival. Functional analysis revealed that knockdown of PVT1 inhibited NSCLC cell proliferation and induced apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo RNA immunoprecipitation and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays demonstrated that PVT1 recruits EZH2 to the large tumor suppressor kinase 2 (LATS2) promoter and represses LATS2 transcription. Furthermore, ectopic expression of LATS2 increased apoptosis and repressed lung adenocarcinoma cell proliferation by regulating the Mdm2-p53 pathway. Taken together, our findings indicated that PVT1/EZH2/LATS2 interactions might serve as new target for lung adenocarcinoma diagnosis and therapy. Mol Cancer Ther; 15(5); 1082-94. ©2016 AACR.

Abstract
Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide, and the biology of this cancer remains poorly understood. Recent evidence indicates that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are found to be dysregulated in a variety of cancers, including HCC. Taurine Up-regulated Gene 1 (TUG1), a 7.1-kb lncRNA, recruiting and binding to polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), is found to be disregulated in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, its clinical significance and potential role in HCC remain unclear. Methods and results In this study, expression of TUG1 was analyzed in 77 HCC tissues and matched normal tissues by using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). TUG1 expression was up-regulated in HCC tissues and the higher expression of TUG1 was significantly correlated with tumor size and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage. Moreover, silencing of TUG1 expression inhibited HCC cell proliferation, colony formation, tumorigenicity and induced apoptosis in HCC cell lines. We also found that TUG1 overexpression was induced by nuclear transcription factor SP1 and TUG1 could epigeneticly repress Kruppel-like factor 2 (KLF2) transcription in HCC cells by binding with PRC2 and recruiting it to KLF2 promoter region. Conclusion Our results suggest that lncRNA TUG1, as a growth regulator, may serve as a new diagnostic biomarker and therapy target for HCC. Abstract
Rats generate sweeping whisker movements in order to explore their environments and identify objects. In somatosensory pathways, neuronal activity is modulated by the frequency of whisker vibration. However, the potential role of rhythmic neuronal activity in the cerebral processing of sensory signals and its mechanism remain unclear. Here, we showed that rhythmic vibrissal stimulation with short duration in anesthetized rats resulted in an increase or decrease in the amplitude of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) in the contralateral barrel cortex. The plastic change of the SEPs was frequency dependent and long lasting. The long-lasting enhancement of the vibrissa-to-cortex evoked response was side- but not barrel-specific. Local application of dl-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid into the barrel cortex revealed that this vibrissa-to-cortex long-term plasticity in adult rats was N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor-dependent. Most interestingly, whisker trimming through postnatal day (P)1-7 but not P29-35 impaired the long-term plasticity induced by 100 Hz vibrissal stimulation. The short period of rhythmic vibrissal stimulation did not induce long-lasting plasticity of field potentials in the thalamus. In conclusion, our results suggest that natural rhythmic whisker activity modifies sensory information processing in cerebral cortex, providing further insight into sensory perception.

Abstract
AIM This meta-analysis aimed to determine whether interferon (IFN) therapy could improve clinical effects of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection-related primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after surgery. METHODS An electronic search from January 1998 to December 2012 was conducted to identify comparative studies evaluating IFN therapy on recurrence and survival after surgical treatment of HCC. RESULTS The estimated odds ratios (OR) for the 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rates of HBV-related HCC were 3.37 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18-6.27), 2.36 (95% CI, 1.45-3.83), 1.81 (95% CI, 1.21-2.72) and 1.93 (95% CI, 1.35-2.75), respectively; and the OR for the 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-year recurrence rates were 0.63 (95% CI, 0.44-0.91), 0.84 (95% CI, 0.60-1.18), 0.88 (95% CI, 0.63-1.22) and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.56-1.07), respectively. The overall survival rates of HCV-related HCC were significantly higher in IFN groups than in control groups at 1, 2, 3 and 5 years (OR, 2.10; 95% CI, 0.96-4.55; OR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.01-2.89; OR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.09-2.83; and OR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.97-4.65, respectively); and the recurrence rates of IFN groups were lower than control groups at 1, 2, 3 and 5 years (OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.38-0.92; OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.41-0.81; OR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.41-0.80; and OR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.36-0.75, respectively). CONCLUSION In conclusion, IFN therapy in this meta-analysis shows a significant clinical effect in postoperative patients of HCC, particularly in HCV-related HCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The PI3K/PTEN/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway has been implicated in resistance to cisplatin. In the current study, we determined whether common genetic variations in this pathway are associated with platinum-based chemotherapy response and clinical outcome in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. METHODS Seven common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in core genes of this pathway were genotyped in 199 patients and analyzed for associations with chemotherapy response, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS Logistic regression analysis revealed an association between AKT1 rs2494752 and response to treatment. Patients carrying heterozygous AG had an increased risk of disease progression after two cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy compared to those with AA genotype (Adjusted odds ratio (OR)=2.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00-4.77, which remained significant in the stratified analyses). However, log-rank test and cox regression detected no association between these polymorphisms in the PI3K pathway genes and survival in advanced NSCLC patients. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that genetic variants in the PI3K/PTEN/AKT/mTOR pathway may predict platinum-based chemotherapy response in advanced NSCLC patients in a Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cumulative evidence suggests that MLH1, the key component in the mismatch pathway, plays an important role in human cancers. Two potential functional polymorphisms (-93G>A and I219V) of MLH1 have been implicated in cancer risk. The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize the evidence for associations. METHODS Eligible studies were identified by searching the electronic literature PubMed, ScienceDirect and Embase databases for relevant reports and bibliographies. Studies were included if of case-control design investigating MLH1 polymorphisms (-93G>A and I219V) and cancer risk with sufficient raw data for analysis. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were used to evaluate the strength of associations. RESULTS Our meta-analysis from 33 published case-control studies showed the variant A allele of -93G>A polymorphism to be associated with increased risk in all genetic models (AA vs. GG: OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.03-1.44), especially among non-Asians (AA vs. GG: OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.04-1.58). For the I219V polymorphism, however, there was no main effect associated with overall cancer risk in any genetic model. CONCLUSIONS The meta-analysis suggested that the MLH1 -93G>A polymorphism may be a biomarker of cancer susceptibility. Large sample association studies and assessment of gene-to-gene as well as gene-to-environment interactions are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
NBS1 plays important roles in maintaining genomic stability as a key DNA repair protein in the homologous recombination repair pathway and as a signal modifier in the intra-S phase checkpoint. We hypothesized that polymorphisms of NBS1 are associated with hepatic cancer (HCC) risk. The NBS1 rs1805794 C/G polymorphism has been frequently studied in some cancers with discordant results, but its association with HCC has not been investigated. Moreover, studies of the 3'UTR variant rs2735383 have not touched upon HCC. This study examined the contribution of these two polymorphisms to the risk of developing HCC in a Chinese population. NBS1 genotypes were determined in 865 HCC patients and 900 controls and the associations with risk of HCC were estimated by logistic regression. Compared with the rs1805794 GG genotype, the GC genotype had a significantly increased risk of HCC (adjusted odds ratios [OR]=1.41; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.11-1.80), the CC carriers had a further increased risk of HCC (OR=2.27; 95% CI=1.68-3.14), and there was a trend for an allele dose effect on risk of HCC (p<0.001). Also, we found that the risk effect of rs1805794 CC+CG was more pronounced in HCC patients that drank (OR=2.28, 95% CI=1.55-3.29 for drinkers; OR=1.31, 95% CI=1.00-1.77 for nondrinkers). However, there was no significant difference in genotype frequencies of rs2735383 G/C site between cases and controls. These findings suggest that rs1805794 C/G polymorphism in NBS1 may be a genetic modifier for developing HCC.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the toxic response in auditory cortex of guinea pigs caused by cis-platinum (DDP), and the protective role of melatonin in this effect. METHODS Cis-platinum and melatonin were injected peritoneally. LDH, MDA, NO in the auditory cortex were detected by spectrophotometeR. RESULTS The body weight of the guinea pigs was diminished by peritoneal injection of Cis-platinum for 7 days (P < 0.01). Peritoneal injection of Cis-platinum induced the increased leakage of LDH (P < 0.05 vs injection of normal saline). This effect was reduced by injection of MT (P < 0.05). The content of MDA in the auditory cortex was also increased because of injection of Cis-platinumv for 7 days (P < 0.01) and MT reduced this effect (P < 0.05). The change of NO in the auditory cortex was not statistically significant after injection of Cis-platinum or Cis-platinum with MT. CONCLUSION Peritoneal injection of Cis-platinum could destroy neurons in the auditory cortex. This effect could be reduced by melatonin by an anti-free radials mechanism.

Abstract
A direct solid sampling electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (SoS-ETAAS) method for ultratrace analysis of powdered niobium pentaoxide for Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni and Zn has been developed. The elements K, Mg, Na and Zn could be determined without any chemical modification. However, in the determination of the elements Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni, serious matrix-caused non-spectral interferences and background occurred which made their determination impossible. This problem was remedied by conversion of the niobium pentaoxide matrix into the thermally stable niobium carbide by using methane atmosphere during the pyrolysis stage. The development resulted in establishing an extraordinary powerful method for the analysis of niobium pentaoxide in term of limits of detection, accuracy, simplicity and analysis time. Quantification was performed using calibration curves measured with aqueous standard solutions. The accuracy was checked by comparing the results with those obtained by ETAAS in analysis of slurries and digests of the sample. Due to almost complete freedom of blank and high applicable sample amounts (up to 15 mg), extremely low limits of detection (0.5-2 ng/g) were achieved.

Abstract
Guanylin is a mammalian peptide homologue of heat-stable enterotoxins that acts on intestinal guanylate cyclase to elicit an increase in cyclic GMP. We have isolated a cDNA encoding an apparent precursor of guanylin from a human intestinal cDNA library. The mRNA is expressed at high levels in human ileum and colon. Human guanylin stimulated increases in T84 cell cyclic GMP levels, displaced 125I-labelled heat-stable enterotoxin (STa) binding to this cell line, and stimulated increases in short-circuit current (Isc) of isolated rat proximal colonic mucosa. This peptide may play a role in regulating fluid and electrolyte absorption in human intestines.

Abstract
Recombinant tissue factor pathway inhibitor (rTFPI) has been expressed in four mammalian expression systems using human SK hepatoma, mouse C127, baby hamster kidney (BHK), and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells as hosts. On sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the immunoaffinity purified rTFPIs all show broad bands and the mean molecular weight of SK hepatoma and C127 rTFPIs (M(r) approximately 38,000) appear larger than those of BHK and CHO rTFPIs (M(r) approximately 35,000). All these proteins inhibit factor Xa and appear to bind factor Xa with 1:1 stoichiometry. The ability of these proteins to inhibit tissue factor-induced coagulation in plasma was examined using a prothrombin time assay. The relative activities of SK rTFPI:C127 rTFPI:BHK rTFPI:CHO rTFPI were found to be 28:15:2.1:1. By Western blot using specific antisera against the amino- and carboxy-termini of TFPI as probes, it is found that all the immunoaffinity purified rTFPIs possess approximately equal amounts of the amino terminus, but the C127 and BHK rTFPIs are deficient in carboxy terminus and the CHO rTFPI is essentially devoid of this region of the protein. Mono S chromatography allowed separation of the full-length and the truncated molecules with high and low anticoagulant activities, respectively. The above results suggest that proteolysis of the carboxy terminus of TFPI occurs to different extent when TFPI is expressed in different cells and that the carboxy terminal region of the TFPI molecule is important for the inhibition of tissue factor-induced coagulation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Lipoprotein-associated coagulation inhibitor produces feed-back inhibition of tissue factor (tissue thromboplastin)-induced coagulation in the presence of factor Xa Recombinant lipoprotein-associated coagulation inhibitor (rLACI) was tested for its ability to modify thromboplastin-induced intravascular coagulation in a rabbit model that allows monitoring of iodine-125 fibrin accumulation/disappearance in the lung and sampling of blood for the measurement of coagulation parameters. Infusion of thromboplastin into the rabbit caused a rapid increase of radioactivity over the lungs, possibly due to the accumulation of 125I fibrin in the lungs, followed by a rapid decline of radioactivity, suggestive of removal of fibrin from the lungs. Thromboplastin also caused a rapid decrease of systemic fibrinogen that was accompanied by a lengthening of the activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time. The effect of coinfusion of rLACI with thromboplastin or bolus injection of rLACI before thromboplastin infusion was studied. At a high dose of rLACI (800 micrograms/kg body weight), the thromboplastin-induced radioactivity increase in the lungs and the systemic fibrinogen decrease were completely suppressed. The activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time of the plasma samples lengthened, possibly due to the presence of thromboplastin in circulation. The thromboplastin-induced radioactivity increase over the lungs was not completely suppressed by lower doses of rLACI (135 to 270 micrograms/kg body weight), but these doses of rLACI prevented systemic fibrinogen decrease. At a bolus dose of 23 micrograms/kg body weight, rLACI provided 50% protection of the fibrinogen consumption (fibrinogen decreased to 82% compared with 65% in rabbits treated with thromboplastin alone). These results show that rLACI is effective in the inhibition of thromboplastin-induced coagulation in vivo.

Abstract
A polyclonal antibody against a synthetic peptide corresponding to amino acids 3-25 of mature lipoprotein-associated coagulation inhibitor (LACI) was raised in rabbits. The antibody was used to study the production of LACI by Hep G2 hepatoma, Chang liver, and SK hepatoma cells, and to purify LACI from the culture media. By using an amidolytic assay for factor Xa, it was found that the culture media from these liver-derived cell lines contain inhibitors of factor Xa. In Hep G2 hepatoma culture medium, approximately 50% of Xa inhibitory activity was due to LACI. In the Chang liver and SK hepatoma culture media over 95% of the Xa inhibitory activity was due to LACI. The LACIs were purified from these media by immunoaffinity chromatography on an anti-LACI-lg-Sepharose 4B column and preparative sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The purified LA-CIs varied in molecular weight depending on whether the media were concentrated before chromatography. An Mr approximately 38,000 LACI was obtained by chromatography of unconcentrated media. Chromatography of concentrated media yielded a LACI of Mr approximately 35,000 with the same amino-terminal sequence, suggesting partial proteolysis in the carboxyl-terminal region. In addition, an Mr approximately 25,000 form of LACI was also present. The purified Mr approximately 38,000 and approximately 35,000 LACI species from the above cells possess similar specific activities when measured by an anti-Xa/amidolysis assay. To study the role of LACI in the control of coagulation, pooled human plasma was depleted of LACI antigen by immunoaffinity absorption and reconstituted with varying amounts of purified LACI to examine the effect on tissue factor (TF)-induced coagulation. LACI depletion shortens the time of TF-induced clotting of plasma and the clotting time is linearly related to the LACI concentration after reconstitution. These results suggest that LACI plays an important role in limiting TF-induced coagulation in human plasma. Comparison of the potencies of various purified LACIs in the prolongation of TF-induced coagulation revealed that LA-CIs from different sources are not equivalent. The plasma LACI, SK hepatoma LACI, and Chang liver LACI are approximately 7-, 6-7, and 1.3-fold higher in specific activity than Hep G2 hepatoma LACI in the TF-induced clotting assay when compared on an anti-Xa/amidolysis unit basis, suggesting possible differences in post-translational modification of these LA-CIs.

Abstract
Soft-tissue wounds of both hind legs in 15 dogs were inflicted by spherical steel bullets. Histologic and ultrastructural changes were observed in the contusion zone and the concussion zone at 6, 12, and 24 hr after wounding. Histologically, it was shown that at 6 hr after wounding, there were degeneration and necrosis of myofibers and interstitial hemorrhage and edema in the contusion zone, while some fibers still appeared to have normal structure in the outer layers. In the inner layers of the concussion zone close to the entrance, there was focal necrosis of myofibers. Histologic changes at 12 and 24 hr after wounding were similar to those at 6 hr but there were more inflammatory reactions. A considerable number of ultrastructural changes were seen in the contusion zone at 6 hr after wounding, such as loss of sarcomeres, vacuolization and pyknosis of mitochondria, swelling of sarcoplasmic reticulum, irregular arrangement of Z-lines, breaking of some capillary endothelial cells, etc. However, in the concussion zone, the changes were much less than those above mentioned, although karyons and karyomeres of some monocytes appeared to be gathering to the side of cytoblast. On the whole, the ultrastructural changes were not so severe at 12 and 24 hr as those at 6 hr after wounding. Also, the characteristic features of the wound caused by high-velocity steel bullets were not similar to those caused by 5.56-mm high-velocity missiles. The severity of damage at the entrance of wound track caused by steel bullet was more marked than that at the exit.

Abstract
A quick and simple method for establishing permanent rumimal fistulae is described. A frozen cannula is forced into the rumen in a manner similar to the use of a trocar. Minimal equipment is required, and the entire operation can be performed in 15 to 20 min in sheep or 30 min in cattle. The technique has been used successfully to fistulate seven sheep and two cows.
