Abstract
A high brightness and low energy spread (∆E) ion source is essential to the production of a high-quality primary ion beam applied in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). A compact 13.56 MHz radio-frequency (RF) ion source with an external planar spiral antenna has been developed as a candidate ion source for the production of negative oxygen ion beams for SIMS application. This ion source is designed with a three-and-a-half-turn water-cooled planar antenna for RF power coupling, a multi-cusp magnetic field for effective plasma confinement, and a three-electrode extraction system. The experimental results show that more than 50 µA negative oxygen ion beams have been extracted, which consist of 56% O-, 25% O2-, and 19% O3-. The ion energy distribution of the negative oxygen ion beam exhibits a Gaussian distribution with a minimum ∆E of 6.3 eV. The brightness of the O- beam is estimated to be 82.4 A m-2 Sr-1 V-1. The simulation, design, and experimental study results of this RF ion source will be presented in this paper.

Abstract
In recent years, laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery have been widely used, and various intraoperative image navigation systems have also developed rapidly. However, the liver itself has a complex vessel and duct system, which increase the difficulty of liver surgery. The augmented reality image navigation system combines the three-dimensional reconstructed image of the liver with the real liver anatomy, which presents the specific relationship between the tumor location and the surrounding vessels for the surgeon. Compared with other intraoperative image navigation methods, augmented reality has its unique advantages. This paper provides an overview of current advances in registration technology in augmented reality image navigation system, and focuses on its applications in liver surgery, including laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. Finally, the technological problems and difficulties still faced at present are summarized, and future directions worth studying in this field are proposed.

Abstract
Space charge effect of intense ion beam has critical influence on separation efficiency in the electromagnetic isotope separator. In this paper, a ribbon beam extraction system with slit electrodes for an electromagnetic isotope separator was designed and studied. The extracted beam currents were varied from 10 to 40 mA and the corresponding extracted beam energies were 40 keV and 100 keV respectively. The simulated output beam density distributions were used in the subsequent multi species particle transmission simulation with the space charge effect included. The separated isotope beam spot distributions at the focal plane were simulated under different space charge compensation factors and thus the optimum operation gas pressures in vacuum box were roughly estimated. For the case of high intensity and high power isotope beam collection, an isotope collector with a deceleration electrode was proposed to mitigate the effect of high power beam bombardment and the resultant temperature rising on the collector surface.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of left cardiac sympathetic denervation(LCSD) for long QT syndrome(LQTS) patients with either recurrence on drug therapy intolerance/refusal. Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study. The cases selected from 193 patients with LQTS who were enrolled in the Chinese Channelopathy Registry Study from November 1999 to November 2012. This study selected 28 LQTS patients with either recurrence on drug therapy intolerance/refusal and underwent LCSD surgery in the Peking University People's Hospital or Beijing Tongren Hospital. The patients were allocated into 3 groups: high-risk group(n=13, baseline QTc ≥550 ms or symptomatic in the first year of life or highly malignant genetics); intermediate-risk group(n=10, 500 ms≤baseline QTc<550 ms, symptomatic after the first year and without highly malignant genetics); low-risk group(n=5, baseline QTc<500 ms, symptomatic after the first year and without highly malignant genetics). LCSD was performed with the traditional supraclavicular approach or video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Patients were regularly followed up until 20 years after the surgery. Data were collected before and 1 year after surgery and at the last follow-up. Patients' electrocardiograph(ECG), cardiac events and surgery-related complications were recorded. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to determine the cardiac event-free survival based on different risk stratification and genotypes. Results: A total of 28 LQTS patients, aged 20.5 (15.0, 37.5) and underwent LCSD surgery, were enrolled in this study, including 23(82.1%) women. There were 11(39.3%) patients treated with traditional approach while 17(60.7%) with VATS-LCSD. There were 19(67.9%) patients had positive genetic test results, including 4 LQT1, 12 LQT2, 1 LQT1/LQT2 mixed type, and 2 Jervell-Lange-Nielsen (JLN) syndrome. The median follow-up period was 189.3(138.7, 204.9) months. The dropout rate was 10.7%(3/28) while 3 patients in the intermediate-risk group were lost to follow-up. Horner syndrome occurred in 1 patient (in the high-risk group). Sudden cardiac deaths were observed in 3 (12.0%) patients (all in the high-risk group), and 12 patients (48.0%) had syncope recurrences (2 in low-risk group, 3 in intermediate-risk group and 7 in high-risk group). A significant reduction in the mean yearly episodes of cardiac events was observed, from (3.5±3.3) before LCSD to(0.2±0.1) at one year after LCSD and (0.5±0.8) at last follow up(P<0.001). The mean QTc was shortened from (545.7±51.2)ms before the surgery to (489.0±40.1)ms at the last follow-up (P<0.001). Among the 20 patients with basic QTc ≥500 ms and completing the follow-up, the QTc intervals of 11(55.0%) patients were shortened to below 500 ms. The event free survival rates for any cardiac events after LCSD decreased sequentially in the low-, intermediate- and high-risk groups, and the difference was statistically significant (χ²=7.24, log-rank P=0.026). No difference was found in the event free survival rates among LQT1, LQT2 and undefined gene patients (χ²=5.20, log-rank P>0.05). Conclusions: LCSD surgery can reduce the incidence of cardiac events and shorten the QTc interval in patients with LQTS after the long-term follow-up. LCSD surgery is effective and safe for patients with LQTS ineffective or intolerant to drug therapy. However, high-risk patients are still at a high risk of sudden death after surgery and should be actively monitored and protected by combined therapies.

Abstract
Objective: To establish an animal model of trichloroethylene (TCE) -induced liver cancer following chronic exposure and to understand the changes in SET expression and histone acetylation, potentially serving as a molecular mechanism for TCE-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Methods: B6C3 mice at 6 weeks were treated with TCE at a series of doses (500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg) by gastric gavage, with corn oil used as the negative control and carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) as the positive control. The serum and liver were sampled for the determination of biochemical indexes and pathological examination after 56 weeks of chemical exposure. Western blot was used to determine the levels of SET, H2AK9ac and HDAC1 expression. Results: The overall survival rate of the mice in various groups was 90.4% (141/156) , with no statistical difference between groups (P>0.05) . Compared with the negative control, the organ coefficient for the liver in the high dose TCE group and the positive control group were significantly increased (P<0.05) . The levels of ALT, AST, LDH and BUN in the all the three TCE groups and the positive control were significantly higher than those in the negative control (P<0.01) . CREA levels in the 1000 and 2000 mg/kg TCE groups were significantly higher than those in the negative control (P<0.05) . Statistical increases in the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and the activities of ALT and AST in various doses of TCE-exposed mice as compared with the control were observed (P<0.01) , in a dose-dependent manner. In the 1000 and 2000 mg/kg of TCE treated mice, levels of SET and H2AK9ac were increased (P<0.05) , while HDAC1 was decreased (P<0.05) , Compared to the tissue adjacent to liver cancer, in the 1000 and 2000 mg/kg TCE groups, the levels of SET were increased (P<0.05) , while HDAC1 was decreased (P<0.05) , and H2AK9ac increased in the 2000 mg/kg group. Conclusion: The hepatocellular carcinoma mouse model induced by chronic exposure to trichloroethylene was successfully established, with enhanced SET protein expression and H2AK9ac in the hepatic tissue.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing hydroxy selenomethionine (OH-SeMet) on performance, selenium (Se) deposition in the breast muscle, quality and oxidative stability, and expression of selenoprotein encoding genes of breast meat of the native slow-growing yellow-feathered broiler birds. A total of 375 one-day-old local yellow male birds were randomly assigned into 5 dietary treatments, supplemented with Se 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mg/kg in the form of OH-SeMet. Each treatment consisted of 5 replicates and each replicate had 15 birds, the birds were fed on basal diet containing corn and soybean meal, and the experiment lasted for 63 d. The results showed that dietary Se supplementation linearly increased (P < 0.001) Se contents in both serum and muscle, no significant changes (P > 0.05) were observed on growth performance, yield of breast, meat color, and intramuscular fat deposition of the breast muscle. Dietary Se addition improved water-holding capacity, the pH24h value, and tenderness of breast muscle, evidenced by a linear decreases of shear force (P < 0.05), accompanied by lower thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and higher glutathione reductase activity. The mRNA abundance of selenoprotein encoding genes also responded to dietary Se levels. It is concluded that, dietary supplementation with OH-SeMet improved muscular Se deposition and meat quality of the native yellow birds, with enhanced antioxidant capability and regulation in selenogenome.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the application value of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and adiponectin (ADPN) in the judgment of liver inflammation in chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods: A total of 159 cases with NAFLD (21 cases), chronic hepatitis B virus infection (57 cases), and chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with NAFLD (81 cases) were collected between June 2016 to December 2018, and the visited patients diagnosis were confirmed by histopathological examination of the liver. ROS and ADPN level retained in serum was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Histopathological examination of liver tissue was used as the gold standard to discuss the diagnostic value of the serum in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with NAFLD for the occurrence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. One-way analysis of variance was used for the comparison among multiple groups, and LSD-t test was used for pairwise comparison between groups. Measurement data for non-normal distributions were expressed as M (P25, P75). Comparisons between groups were performed using the Mann-Whitney U or Kruskal-Wallis H test. Chi-square test was used to compare the count data between groups. Correlation analysis was performed using Spearman correlation analysis. Histopathological grouping of liver tissue was used as the gold standard, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the regression formula. Results: (1) In patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with NAFLD, the levels of ROS in the non-hepatic steatosis group and the mild hepatic steatosis group were significantly lower than those in the moderate and severe hepatic steatosis group, while the ADPN level in the non-hepatic steatosis group was significantly higher than liver steatosis group, P < 0.05. (2) The results of correlation analysis showed that ROS was significantly correlated with NAS score, change in the degree of fatty liver and lobular inflammation (all P < 0.05).There was a significant negative correlation between ADPN and the change in the degree of fatty liver (P < 0.05). (3) Logistic regression analysis results showed that the diagnostic formula for chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis was 0.02 × controlled attenuation index + 0.584 × white blood cells/10(9) + 0.587 × ROS-10.982. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve of the subject was = 0.896. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value were 97.1%, 71.2%, 64.2%, and 97.9%. Conclusion: ADPN and ROS have certain reference value in differentiating the change in the degree of fatty liver and inflammation in chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with NAFLD and the diagnostic formula has higher application value in the diagnosis and exclusion of chronic hepatitis B virus infection combined with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Abstract
An isotope enrichment system for 39Ar has been developed at the Institute of Modern Physics, which is designed to increase the abundance of 39Ar in the incident sample gas. With intense Ar+ beams produced by a 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source and a high mass resolution spectrometer system, Ar isotopes are evidently separated on the target plane and selectively collected by an Al target. The separated Ar isotopes have been identified on the target plane, which is consistent with the simulations. According to the recent cross-checked results with atom trap trace analysis, a high enrichment factor of 39Ar has been successfully achieved. This paper will present the design and test results of this system.

Abstract
A negative oxygen ion source is under development to produce O- and O2 - beams used for a secondary ion mass spectrometer at Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), and both filament and radio frequency (RF) schemes are tested. The filament driven ion source, which was initially designed for H- production, has a 10-pole multicusp plasma chamber, two sets of virtual magnetic filters, and a 3-electrode extraction system. The RF scheme, which is improved by changing a RF back plate from the filament ion source, has an external planar spiral RF antenna behind an AlN window. The RF power system consists of a continuous wave (CW) 13.56 MHz/2 kW power supply, a capacitive automatching network and a water-cooled flat RF antenna made from a 6-mm copper tube. Oxygen and carbon dioxide gases are used to produce O- and O2 - ion beams, and ion composition is analyzed by using a Wien filter. However, the lifetime of filaments sustains from several minutes to hours before fracture occurred while the RF one can work stably with no maintenance, and the experiment results will be given on O- ion production with two different technologies using our ion source test facility.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate alteration of proteins profile in malignant transformation bronchial epithelial cells(16HBE-T) induced by hexavalent chromium[(Cr(VI))] and analyze the expression level of SET protein, then to provide some new insights for the carcinogenesis mechanism of Cr(VI). Methods: Total protein was extracted from 16HBE cells and was alkylated and desalinated before digested into peptides. The products were labeled with Tandem Mass Tag (TMT) and identified using LC-ESI-MS/MS. Results: A total of 3 517 proteins were found, expression differences greater than 1.5 or less 0.67 times were to found have 185 and 201 proteins, respectively. Gene enrichment analysis revealed that differential proteins were mainly involved in autophagy, DNA damage repair, RNA processing and other biological processes. Western blot results showed the expression level of SET was significantly increased while downregulated in histone H3K18/27 acetylation and p53 protein. Conclusion: Proteins involved in multiple biological processes altered in 16HBE-T cells and regulation mode of SET inhibiting histone H3K18/27 acetylation regulating transcriptional activity of p53 may paly an important role in Cr(VI)-association carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonlinear optical microscopic (NLOM) imaging technique shows its high resolution imaging features in histocytology. The purpose of this study was to investigate NLOM imaging technique as a useful tool for a donor kidney quality assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-three pretransplant kidney biopsies from adult donors were analyzed retrospectively. Each specimen was paraffin-embedded and sectioned into 2 consecutive 5-μm thick sections. One section was stained with Masson trichrome, and the other was left unstained for NLOM imaging using second harmonic generation combined with two-photon excited fluorescence (SHG/TPEF). The pretransplant kidney quality was assessed by an experienced pathologist using the Remuzzi scoring system, which characterizes renal tissue morphology into 4 aspects: tubular atrophy, interstitial fibrosis, glomerulosclerosis, and vascular injury. The K coefficient was used to measure the consistency of the Remuzzi scores between conventional Masson trichrome stained images and SHG/TPEF images. RESULTS NLOM imaging technology can capture high-resolution tissue images from unstained renal tissue, is easy to operate, and shortens time-consuming histological processing procedures. No significant differences (P > .05) were found between the Remuzzi scores of the SHG/TPEF images and the Masson trichrome stained images. The high κ coefficients (0.804-0.895) showed a good consistency between these 2 techniques. CONCLUSION The NLOM technique is suitable for renal tissue imaging and could potentially be used for routine pretransplant kidney evaluation in clinical settings.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the trichloroethylene-induced alteration of methylation on the promoter region of SET and related mechanisms in hepatic L-02 cells. Methods: L-02 cells were treated with different concentrations of TCE(0 mmol/L, 1 mmol/L, 2 mmol/L, 4 mmol/L, 8 mmol/L) for 24 h. The genomic DNA were then extracted and modified by bisulfite sodium. The DNA methylation was then analyzed using bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP). Results: The overall methylation on promoter region of SET was decreased along with the increased concentrations of TCE in hepatic L-02 cells. Moreover, 73 CpG islands were found abnormally altered, among which 9 were predicted in transcriptional factor binding regions. Conclusion: The decreased levels of CpG islands in the transcriptional factor binding region may contribute to the elevation of SET in TCE-induced hepatotoxicity.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of miRNA acting in regulating multi-directional differentiation ability of mesenchymal stem cell in treatment of osteoporosis (OP), with the aim of finding a new idea and approach for clinical treatment of OP. Estrogen deficiency-induced OP mice model was established by means of ovariectomy (OVX). Additionally, a sham group was set up for control. Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMMSCs) of OVX group (O/BMMSCs) and BMMSCs of sham group (S/BMMSCs) were separately cultured. Then surface markers of BMMSCs were detected. Multi-directional differentiation ability was identified in the two groups by giving cells targeted induced stimulation. It was found that the bone trabecula, bone density and bone volume fraction of distal femoral metaphysis in the OVX group were much lower than those of the sham group. Moreover, trabecular bone space in the OVX group became larger; O/BMMSCs and S/BMMSCs both had normal expression of surface markers as well as potentials of osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation; O/BMMSCs had a weaker osteogenic capability but a stronger adipogenic capability than S/BMMSCs. All the findings suggest that the regulatory effect of miRNA on multi-directional differentiation ability plays a vital role in the treatment of OP, and there is a close correlation between them; deficiency or functional defect of BMMSCs can result in the occurrence of OP.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the relationship between genetic changes and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) susceptibility, and to screen for the key single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci in the HAPE-susceptibility gene, by investigating the SNPs occurring in hypoxia-related genes in HAPE-susceptible and control (non-susceptible) populations. This research was conducted on Han recruits, who travelled to the Lhasa plateau (altitude, 3658 m). Ten loci located on ten genes extracted from the HAPE and healthy populations were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, and subsequently sequenced. The investigated genes included those coding for aldosterone synthase 2 (CYP11B2), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), surfactant protein A2 (SP-A2), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), nitric oxide synthetase (NOS), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), prolyl hydroxylase (EGLN1), and zinc finger protein A20. The gene distribution of each SNP loci and its correlation with HAPE was analyzed. Statistical analyses of the genotype frequencies of the SNPs revealed significant differences in the ACE (rs4309), EGLN1 (rs480902), SP-A2 (rs1965708), HSP70 (rs1008438), PAI-1 (rs1799889), and NOS (rs199983) expressions between the HAPE and healthy control groups (P < 0.05); therefore, these SNP loci were believed to indicate HAPE susceptibility. HAPE is correlated with multiple- SNP loci. A correlation analysis between genetic polymorphism and HAPE susceptibility revealed that 6 hypoxia-related genes were key sites accounting for HAPE. These findings could help assess the risk of HAPE in populations expressing different genotypes, in order to reduce the occurrence of HAPE.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Haemophilic arthritis is the most universal clinical appearance of haemophilia. Treatment of this disease has become an important and difficult issue worldwide until recently. OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and safety of five in one therapy for graded treatment of haemophilic arthritis. METHODS Haemophilic arthritis was classified into grades I-IV according to severity and the standards of De Palma and Cotler. Under no application of FVIII/FIX replacement therapy state, the effect of five in one therapy (intra-articular cavity drug injection, oral drug preparation, physiotherapy, and prevention of haemorrhage and infection evoked by puncture) was observed in 1527 affected joints of 750 cases of haemophilic arthritis. RESULTS After 20 days treatment, all grade I and II, 94.98% of grade III and 56.16% of grade IV affected joints were completely relieved; 5.02% of grade III and 41.47% of grade IV affected joints were basically relieved; and 2.38% of grade IV were partially relieved. This resulted in short-term complete and basic relief of 98.56% (1505/1527) of all affected joints. After follow-up of 1-6 years, 86.97% of the affected joints were completely relieved, without any adverse reaction or complication. CONCLUSION The results suggest that five in one therapy is safe and effective for treatment of haemophilic arthritis, and provides a convenient, cost-effective way of preventing and treating deformity caused by haemophilic arthritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insufficient length of right renal vein (RV) increases the difficulty of venous anastomosis and blocks the promotion of transplantation of both kidneys, which could significantly reduce operative time and donor numbers. This study sought to discover a quick, safe method of venous anastomosis for right kidney donation. METHODS Three venous anastomotic methods (n = 20 in each group) were used for right donor kidney heterotopic transplantation: End-to-side, vena cava bypass, and modified end-to-end, namely, harvesting the right donor kidney with a part of the vena cava and then anastomosing the proximal end to the recipient RV followed by a ligation of the distal end. The conventional end-to-end venous anastomosis was used for left donor kidney orthotopic transplantation as a control (n = 60). We compared operative times and complications. RESULTS The operative time of the modified end-to-end group (18.45 ± 0.69 minutes) and end-to-side group (17.95 ± 1.54 minutes) were both less than the vena caval bypass group (32.60 ± 2.84 minutes); (P < .05), but equal to the control group (17.60 ± 1.89; P > .05). The overall complication rate among the modified end-to-end group (2/20) was less than those for the end-to-side (8/20) and vena caval bypass groups (9/20; P < .05), but similar to the control group (7/60; P > .05). CONCLUSION A modified end-to-end technique is the preferred venous anastomotic method for right donor kidney transplantation.

Abstract
Since the revision of the National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle in 2001, significant progress has been made in balancing the amino acid composition of dairy cow diets. In formulating such diets, it is important not only to satisfy requirements for rumen degradable protein and rumen undegradable protein, but also to ensure a balanced ratio between the first two limiting amino acids, lysine and methionine, as well as with other amino acids. A lysine to methionine ratio of 3 : 1 in metabolisable protein (when using the NRC model) increases the cost-efficiency of diets and milk yield, and renders milk production more predictable. Moreover, balancing amino acids gives the opportunity to formulate diets with less rumen-undegradable protein, improves the cow’s health and reproductive performance, and decreases nitrogen excretion.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) strain (HuN4) is poorly understood. Therefore, highly pathogenic PRRSV strain (HuN4) and its derivative strain (HuN4-F112) (obtained by propagation in MARC145 cells for 112 passages) were inoculated into a total of 48 PRRSV-sero-negative pigs (age: 4-5 weeks) by the intranasal route. Virological, pathological and in situ hybridization analyses were performed. The results exhibited that pigs infected with HuN4 showed a loss of appetite, decrease in body weight, raised body temperature and respiratory symptoms, along with interstitial pneumonia lesions. In the HuN4 group, multifocal interstitial pneumonia with macrophage infiltration was found in the lung. The lesions in the lymph node were characterized by collapsed follicles, depletion of germinal centres and reduction in lymphocytes. Perivascular cuffing and glial nodules were observed in the brains of some pigs. By comparison, the HuN4-F112 group had milder lesions. PRRSV was detected in macrophages, alveolar epithelial cells and vascular endothelial cells in the tonsil and lymph nodes. The PRRSV amounts in the pigs infected with HuN4 were 10(5) -10(9) copies/ml in the blood and 10(10) -10(11) copies/g in the lung tissues, whereas the virus amounts with HuN4-F112 were 10(2.15) -10(3.13) copies/ml in the blood and 10(3.0) -10(3.6) copies/g in the lung. Our results demonstrate that the PRRS HuN4 virus infects alveolar epithelial cells, macrophages and vascular endothelial cells causing diffuse alveolar damage and lymph node necrosis. Its higher pathogenicity compared with HuN4-F112 virus may be explained in part by higher replication rate in the previously mentioned organs.

Abstract
1. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of total removal of dietary inorganic phosphorus and reduced energy and protein, without and with phytase supplementation, on the performance, egg quality and bone composition of laying hens. 2. Lohmann pink-shell hens were randomly assigned at 56 weeks of age to 5 treatments for 20 weeks as follows: (1) a positive control (PC) with 155 g CP/kg, 11·09 MJ ME/kg, calcium (Ca) 3·40% and non-phytic phosphorus (NPP) 0·26%, (2) a negative control (NC1) diet based on PC diet with Ca decreased to 3·30% and NPP to 0·14%, (3) NC2 diet was formulated on the basis of NC1 diet with 152·7 g CP/kg, 10·90 MJ/kg, (4) NC1 and (5) NC2 supplemented with phytase (300 FTU/kg) each. 3. Feed intake, hen-day or hen-housed egg production, egg number per hen-housed, and final body weight were depressed with NC1 and NC2 diets, but restored by phytase inclusion. There were no significant differences between the dietary treatments for feed conversion efficiency, rates of cracked and broken eggs, egg-shell thickness or egg-shell strength. Mortality was significantly increased by NC2 diet without phytase. Tibia ash was significantly decreased by both NC1 and NC2 diets. Bone strength, and Ca and P contents in tibia ash were significantly increased by phytase inclusion in the NC1 diet. 4. In conclusion, the NC1 and NC2 diets significantly depressed performance and tibia quality, but the addition of phytase (300 FTU/kg) significantly improved performance and tibia integrity.

Abstract
The calculation of thermal conductivity for complex material systems is a challenging problem in computational materials science. Its key point is to calculate heat flux. In this work, we derive a concise formula for this purpose based on the equation of motion and then use it to study the thermal conduction properties of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), which is a widely used plastic-bonded explosive (PBX). The results are in fair agreement with experiments and show a distinct thermal conduction anisotropy for HMX single crystals. Then we investigate some key issues of thermal conductivity, such as its temperature-dependence and composition-dependence. A series of interesting results are obtained.

Abstract
This study compared the accuracy of measurements of the skull base made using computed tomography (CT) images and an image-guided surgery system with those made using scientific callipers in order to evaluate the practicability of replacing conventional direct anatomical measurements with digitized techniques in skull base surgery. Important bony landmarks and parameters were measured using the three different methods in 25 cadaver skull bases. No statistically significant differences were observed between the methods. Coefficient of variation calculations indicated that data obtained from CT images was the most stable. Digital methods of navigation have the potential to reflect individual skull base anatomical features more accurately than traditional group-based data, but it is important to assess their accuracy. This study demonstrated that CT imageology and image-guided surgery systems can provide accurate anatomical measurements. Digital methods are also more flexible and less variable, and may have wide applications in this field. Though not perfect, digital imaging is a promising tool for skull base surgery.

Abstract
This retrospective analysis of the clinical records of 42 patients was used to study the clinical significance of a classification system for posterior petrous meningiomas. According to clinical manifestations and radiological images, posterior petrous meningiomas were classified into three types: type I (cerebella type; 12 patients), tumours involved and compressed the cerebellum; type II (cranial nerve type; 16 patients), tumours involved the cranial nerves; and type III (combined type; 14 patients), tumours involved more than one structure such as the cerebellum, cranial nerves and the brain stem. All patients underwent microneurosurgery and the total resection rate was 90%. It was more difficult totally to resect type II and III tumours than type I tumours and the post-operative functional outcomes were worse. Microneurosurgical techniques and skills are critical to increase the total resection rate of posterior petrous meningiomas in order to decrease the mortality and disability rates.

Abstract
The effects of foliar spraying with spermidine (Spd) on the subcellular distribution and chemical speciation of Cd in Typha latifolia L. in hydroponic system were investigated. Increased Cd concentration in the medium caused an increase of Cd concentration in all tissues and all subcellular fractions, with the highest Cd level occurring in roots, followed by rhizomes and leaves and the greatest accumulation was in cell walls, soluble fraction and organelle containing fractions ranked next, respectively. The greatest amount of Cd was found in the extraction of 1 mol.L(-1) NaCl, followed by 2% HAC, deionized water, 80% ethanol, residues and the least in 0.6 mol.L(-1) HCl. The subcellular distribution and different chemical forms of Cd both decreased after Spd application and were more inhibited by 0.25 than 0.50 mmol.L(-1) Spd, especially in roots at 0.10 mmol.L(-1) Cd treatment. It could be suggested that the retention of Cd in roots, cell walls binding with metal, metal ion compartmentation in vacuoles and Cd forms existing in undissolved and integrated with pectates and protein play an important role in Cd detoxification and Spd could enhance the tolerance of cattail to Cd stress.

Abstract
An intrinsic plastic Cu(45)Zr(46)Al(7)Ti(2) bulk metallic glass (BMG) with high strength and superior compressive plastic strain of up to 32.5% was successfully fabricated by copper mold casting. The superior compressive plastic strain was attributed to a large amount of randomly distributed free volume induced by Ti minor alloying, which results in extensive shear band formation, branching, interaction and self-healing of minor cracks. The mechanism of plasticity presented here suggests that the creation of a large amount of free volume in BMGs by minor alloying or other methods might be a promising new way to enhance the plasticity of BMGs.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of two distinct enzyme preparations on nutrients' digestibility and growth performance of growing pigs fed diets based on corn, soya bean meal and Chinese double-low rapeseed meal (DLRM). The two enzyme preparations were Enzyme R, a preparation extracted from fermentation of a non-GMO fungus Penicillum funiculosum, developed for multi-grain and multi-animal species; and Enzyme P, a xylanase preparation from Trichoderma longibrachiatum, for pigs fed corn-based diets only. Both enzymes were tested at 0, 0.25 and 0.50 g/kg feed using 70 crossbred male pigs (Large Yorkshire x Landrace) in five dietary treatments and seven replicates in each treatment, for growth period from 27 to 68 kg live weight in 49 days. Results showed that the supplementation of both enzymes (1) increased total-tract digestibility of dietary energy from 77.5% (control) to 81.4% (Enzyme R, p < 0.05) and 81.9% (Enzyme P, p < 0.05); of neutral detergent fibre from 41.0% (control) to 57.8% (Enzyme R, p < 0.05) and 60.0% (Enzyme P, p < 0.05); (2) improved average daily gain from 786 g (control) to 829 g (Enzyme R, p < 0.05) and 846 g (Enzyme P, p < 0.05); and numerical increases in feed intake from 1.96 kg/pig/day (control) to 2.01 (Enzyme R) and 2.00 (p > 0.05) and feed conversion ratio from 2.50 (control) to 2.42 (Enzyme R) and 2.36 (Enzyme P, p < 0.05); (3) there was a dose response but no significant differences were observed in enzyme efficacy between the two enzyme preparations. The present study demonstrated beneficial effects of applying xylanase-based enzymes to improve feeding values of pig diets based on corn, soya bean meal and DLRM.

Abstract
The full length of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class IIB cDNA was cloned from a Chinese population of Paralichthys olivaceus by homology cloning and rapid amplification of cDNA ends-polymerase chain reaction (RACE-PCR). The MHC IIB genomic sequence is 1,864 bp long and consists of 34-bp 5'UTR, 741-bp open reading frame, 407-bp 3'UTR, 96-bp intron1, 392-bp intron2, 85-bp intron3, and 109-bp intron4. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the putative MHC class IIB amino acid of the Chinese P. olivaceus shared 28.3% to 85.4% identity with that of the reported MHC class IIB in other species. A significant association between MHC IIB polymorphism and disease resistance/susceptibility was found in Chinese P. olivaceus. Thirteen different MHC IIB alleles were identified among 411 clones from 84 individuals. Among the 280 (268) nucleotides, 32 (11.4%) nucleotide positions were variable. Most alleles such as alleles a, b, c, d, e, f, j, k, i, m were commonly found in both resistant and susceptible stock. Via chi2 test, allele d was significantly more prevalent in individuals from susceptible stock than from resistant stock, and their percentages were 23.80% and 7.14%, respectively. In addition, allele g occurred in 9 and allele h in 4 of 42 resistant individuals that were not present in the susceptible stock; their percentages were 21.4% and 9.52%, respectively. Although allele l was found only in 8 individuals from the susceptible stock, its percentage is 19.05%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the activity of daphnetin(DPNT) against the exo-erythrocytic stage of rodent malaria. METHODS Groups of ten male ICR mice were infected by intraperitoneal injection with sporozoites of P. yoelii. Mice were administered daphnetin 0.5 hr postinfection on d0 and once per day for three additional consecutive days(d1-d3) by the i.g. route. The effects of daphnetin at various dosages and those of the combination of daphnetin with primaquine were assessed by the number of mice with negative Giemsa-stained slides from tail blood on the seventh day after infection and by the average number of red blood cells (RBC) infected in 1,000 RBC observed on the eleventh or twelfth day after infection. We also observed the effect of daphnetin on the concentration of Hb in ICR mice. RESULTS Daphnetin exhibited no detectable antimalarial effect on the exo-erythrocytic stage of P. yoelii, while the antimalarial efficacy of DPNT 50 mg/(kg.d) combined with 5 mg/(kg.d) PQ, was comparable to PQ 10 mg/(kg.d) x 4 d i.g. in mice infected with sporozoites of P. yoelii. The concentration of Hb in ICR mice administered with DPNT 50 mg/(kg.d) x 4 d decreased on the eighth day after administration. CONCLUSION Daphnetin alone showed no anti-exoerythrocytic activity in vivo. The combination of DPNT 50 mg/(kg.d) with PQ 5 mg/(kg.d) showed promising antimalarial efficacy comparable to that of PQ 10 mg/(kg.d). Administration of DPNT caused anemia in ICR mice.

Abstract
Connexin 43 (Cx43), a structural component of gap junctions, is believed to function as a tumor suppressor gene. Previously, we showed that expression of Cx43 suppresses cell proliferation and tumorigenicity of human glioblastoma cells [Huang et al., Cancer Res 58:5089-5096, 1998] and enhances apoptosis in response to chemotherapeutic agents [Huang et al., Int J Cancer 92:130-138, 2001]. In the present study, we demonstrated that expression of Cx43 in human glioblastoma cells potentiated an apoptotic program under low-serum conditions. The Cx43-mediated effect was coupled with a decreased expression of the specific apoptosis-inhibitor bcl-2. Overexpression of bcl-2 in Cx43-transfected cells conferred resistance to apoptosis induced under low-serum conditions, suggesting that the Cx43-mediated apoptosis under low-serum conditions is regulated, in part, through the downregulation of bcl-2 expression. Furthermore, application of the phosphatidylinositol-3'-OH kinase inhibitor LY294002 specifically induced apoptosis in Cx43-transfected cells. Our results demonstrate a new role of Cx43 in the mediation of apoptosis under low serum conditions.

Abstract
In order to elucidate the intrinsic mechanism underlying proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes during ontogenesis, CD34(+) cells were isolated from human fetal liver (FL) with a high-gradient magnetic sorting system (MACS) and were incubated in liquid suspension with 50 and 100 ng/ml of thrombopoietin (TPO) and in MegaCult(Tm) -C semi-solid culture system with 0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, and 200 ng/ml of TPO. The cell number, colony number of CFU-Mk, platelet-associated antigen phenotype, and DNA ploidy of CD41(+) cells were examined from d 0 to d 12 in culture. The expression patterns of cyclins B1, D1, and D3 were also analyzed by using immunoblot and flow cytometry. TPO stimulated proliferation of CD34(+) cells of FL from 1 x 10(5)/ml to 13.12 +/-4.06 10(5)/ml with 95% of CD41a(+) cells and 3% of CD34(+) cells after 12 d of culture. Most of the megakaryocytes (MKs) derived from FL were in 2 N ploidy class, and few in 4 N ploidy class, but no megakaryocytes ploidy class was higher than 4 N. The effect of TPO on the formation of CFU-Mk colonies from FL derived CD34(+) cells is shown in a dose-response curve. The expression of cyclin B1 increased progressively and the high level of cyclin B1 was maintained in FL CD34(+) cells induced by TPO during 12 d of culture. A high level of cyclin B1 appeared on FL derived MKs of G1 phase at d 12. The expression of cy-of cyclins D1 and D3 gradually increased in FL CD34(+) cells, which was induced by TPO during the initial 6-day incubation. Afterwards, the level of cyclins D1 and D3 decreased progressively, particularly in MKs which were in G2+M phases. These data suggest that (1) TPO induced proliferation and differentiation of FL derived CD34(+) cells through upregulation of cyclin B1 in G2+M phases and cyclins D1 and D3 in all phases of cell cycle, and (2) Continuing high level of cyclin B1 and decreases of cyclins D1 and cyclin D3 on MKs in G2+M phases may contribute to a retardation of MK endoreduplication.

Abstract
Previous studies demonstrated that hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) is a tumor promoter in the rat liver epithelial cell line T51B. We investigated the pathway linking H(2)O(2) to tumor promotion. H(2)O(2) can directly induce tyrosine phosphorylation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). H(2)O(2) and epidermal growth factor exerted similar effects on the induction of early growth response genes, disruption of gap junction communication, triggering of calcium inflow, and promotion of transformation. Furthermore, the effect of H(2)O(2) on tumor promotion was blocked by abrogation of EGFR activation. Our results suggested that tumor promotion by H(2)O(2) is mediated mainly through activation of EGFR in T51B cells.

Abstract
A temperature-sensitive, elongation-deficient mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana was isolated. At the non-permissive temperature of 31 degrees C, the mutation impaired tissue elongation; otherwise, tissue development was normal. Hypocotyl cells that had established cell walls at 21 degrees C under light-dark cycles ceased elongation and swelled when the mutant was shifted to 31 degrees C and darkness, indicating that the affected gene is essential for cell elongation. Analysis of the cell walls of mutant plants grown at 31 degrees C revealed that the cellulose content was reduced to 40% and the pectin content was increased to 162% of the corresponding values for the wild type grown at the same temperature. The increased amounts of pectin in the mutant were bound tightly to cellulose microfibrils. No change in the content of hemicellulose was apparent in the 31 degrees C-adapted mutant. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy suggested that the structure of cellulose bundles was affected by the mutation; X-ray diffraction, however, revealed no change in the crystallite size of cellulose microfibrils. The regeneration of cellulose microfibrils from naked mutant protoplasts was substantially delayed at 31 degrees C. The recessive mutation was mapped to chromosome V, and map-based cloning identified it as a single G-->A transition (resulting in a Gly(429)-->Arg substitution) in KORRIGAN, which encodes a putative membrane-bound endo-1,4-beta-glucanase. These results demonstrate that the product of this gene is required for cellulose synthesis.

Abstract
Objective. To explore prior noise exposures or sound conditioning as a moderator of hearing loss produced by traumatic exposure to low or middle-frequency noise. Method. Two experimental groups of guinea-pigs were conditioned using a 0.5 kHz octave band noise (OBN) at 85 dB, 6 h/d for 4 d. The subjects were allowed to recover for 3 d after conditioning. Then the first group was exposed to a 0.5 kHz OBN at 110 dB for 1 h, the second group was exposed to 1 kHz OBN at 110 dB for 1 h. Two control groups received 0.5 kHz and 1 kHz OBN respectively at 110 dB for 1 h without prior sound conditioning. Result. Hearing threshold shifts recorded at 48 h after the high-level noise exposure in conditioned groups and control groups demonstrated that conditioning provided significant protection on hearing threshold shift from low or middle frequency noise exposure. Histological examination revealed significantly less hair cell loss in the conditioned than in the control groups. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in red blood cell (RBC) of conditioned groups were significantly lower as compared with that of the control groups. Conclusion. Low-frequency conditioning provided significant protection not only on hearing threshold shift caused by noise of the same frequency, but also on that caused by middle frequency noise.

Abstract
The vegetative growth of Arabidopsis thaliana can be divided into two phases. The transition from the juvenile (early) phase to the adult (later) phase is associated with changes in several morphological features of leaves, such as the shape of leaf blades, the number of trichomes and patterns of venation. In a screening of mutants with altered morphological identities of leaves, we found one which we named juvenile leafless and misshapen shoot apical meristem (jam). The mutation represented a new allele of the WUSCHEL (WUS) gene, and, in its presence, plants produced no juvenile leaves. Analysis of the morphology of mutant plants revealed that all the rosette leaves had characteristics of adult leaves. The formation of the first rosette leaf in the wus(jam) mutant was markedly delayed, and occurred at the almost same time as formation of the third or fourth leaf in wild-type plants. In the wild-type, these leaves correspond to the first adult leaves. Analysis by RT-PCR showed that transcripts of WUS accumulated in shoot apices and roots, but not in cotyledons and leaves. The present results suggest that the WUS gene controls the morphological traits of rosette leaves either directly or indirectly. In view of the predicted function of the WUS gene, namely maintenance of stem cells within the shoot apical meristem, we suggest that the lack of juvenile leaves in the mutant might have been caused by interruption of leaf initiation during the juvenile phase or by halting of an entire process of formation of juvenile leaves.

Abstract
Three large-insert genomic DNA libraries of common wheat, Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring, were constructed in a newly developed transformation-competent artificial chromosome (TAC) vector, pYLTAC17, which accepts and maintains large genomic DNA fragments stably in both Escherichia coli and Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The vector contains the cis sequence required for Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer into grasses. The average insert sizes of the three genomic libraries were approximately 46, 65 and 120 kbp, covering three haploid genome equivalents. Genomic libraries were stored as frozen cultures in a 96-well format, each well containing approximately 300-600 colonies (12 plates for small library, four for medium-size library and four for large library). In each of the libraries, approximately 80% of the colonies harbored genomic DNA inserts of >50 kbp. TAC clones containing gene(s) of interest were identified by the pooled PCR technique. Once the target TAC clones were isolated, they could be immediately transferred into grass genomes with the Agrobacterium system. Five clones containing the thionin type I genes (single copy per genome), corresponding to each of the three genomes (A, B and D), were successfully selected by the pooled PCR method, in addition to an STS marker (aWG464; single copy per genome) and CAB (a multigene family). TAC libraries constructed as described here can be used to isolate genomic clones containing target genes, and to carry out genome walking for positional cloning.
