Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholecystectomy is routinely performed during living donor hepatectomy both to see the structure of the biliary tract and to determine the demarcation line based on the biliary tract junction. This study aims to present the general histopathological features of the gallbladder specimen obtained from living liver donors (LLD). METHODS Data from 2577 LLDs who underwent living donor hepatectomy (n = 2511) or aborted living donor hepatectomy (n = 66) in our Liver Transplantation Institute between September 2005 and June 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. Age, gender, macroscopic (length, diameter, and wall thickness), and microscopic (histopathological) features of the gallbladder of the LLDs were recorded for use in this study. RESULTS A total of 2493 LLDs (men: 1486, women: 1007) with a median age of 29 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 13) met the inclusion criteria in this study. The median length, width and wall thickness of the gallbladder specimens were measured as 70 mm (IQR: 20), 50 mm (IQR: 20), and 2 mm (IQR: 1), respectively. The most common histopathological findings are normal structure (2026; 81.3%), chronic cholecystitis (n = 446; 17.9%), adenomyomatosis (n = 9), and papillary hyperplasia (n = 6), respectively. The most common pathologic findings in the gallbladder lumen are cholesterolosis (n = 207; 0.4%), cholelithiasis (n = 53), cholesterol polyp (n = 31), and noncholesterol polyp (n = 19), respectively. Significant differences were detected between the male and female genders in terms of age (P < .001), height (P < .001), weight (P < .001), body mass index (P < .001), gallbladder width (P = .001), gallbladder length (P < .001), histopathological finding (content) (P < .001), and lymph node around the gallbladder (P = .015). CONCLUSIONS The results we obtained in this study are true gallbladder pathologies that can be detected in healthy people. In this study, it was shown that the diameter and size of the gallbladder were larger in men, whereas the incidence of cholesterolosis and cholelithiasis was higher in women.

Abstract
Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular tumor caused by human herpes virus type 8 (HHV8). Gastrointestinal involvement of KS is rare and most commonly clinically silent. Gastrointestinal KS may mimic gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) histologically as the tumor formed by morphologically spindle-shaped cells, which is mostly located in the mucosa and submucosa. In the present study, we describe a case of Kaposi sarcoma that was first diagnosed in the gastrointestinal tract of a 73-year-old female patient who presented to the clinic with nausea and diarrhea. Immunohistochemical staining showed cytoplasmic CD117 expression both in stomach and colon biopsies. Although involvement of KS is rarely seen in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), the differential diagnosis of low-grade spindle cell lesions without significant pleomorphism, KS should definitely be considered, and it should be known that CD117 positivity is also present in these neoplasms.

Abstract
Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with spindle cell morphology is a rare variant that can be seen in extranodal regions. Because the spindle cell dominant morphology in lymphoma is extremely unusual, the diagnosis can easily be missed in many organ systems. We present a case of an 82-year-old male patient with complaints of abdominal pain and swelling. He operated with the preliminary diagnosis of cecum tumor and ileum perforation. Tumoral proliferation was observed originating from the submucosa and infiltrating the muscularis propria, with the features of mostly spindle-shaped, having round-shaped nuclei in some of the cells, and having relatively narrow cytoplasm. A panel of immunohistochemical stains were performed to rule out the possibilities of sarcoma, carcinoma, or melanoma. Diffuse strong positive reaction was observed for CD45, CD20, CD19, CD22, Pax5, and CD30. The case was reported as spindle cell variant of DLBCL based on the present findings. As far as we know, this is the first case described in the colon. We emphasize that pathologists should be reminded of lymphoma as a differential diagnosis of spindle cell tumors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is one of the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in recent years, and some modifications have emerged to improve its efficacy. Melissas has described SG plus jejuno-ileal bypass (JIB), which has reported good results in a few studies. We performed this procedure in 21 cases and in one case, we observed acute liver failure (ALF) that has not been reported before. CASE PRESENTATION A 38-year-old female (BMI: 56.1 kg/m2) underwent laparoscopic SG plus JIB. There was no sign of diarrhea, malnutrition or liver failure for eight months and her BMI was 43.0 kg/m2. At the 9th month, she was hospitalized for abdominal pain, jaundice and ALF. The patient was treated by plasmapheresis and molecular absorptive recirculation system. She was planned to undergo liver transplantation but died of multiorgan failure on the 40th day of hospitalization. CONCLUSION ALF can be observed following SG plus JIB. JIB reversal before compromising liver functions should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
Early or late posttransplant opportunistic infections are among the leading complications after liver transplant. The source of early posttransplant opportunistic infections is usually the patient, the implantation of an infected graft, contamination during a surgical procedure, or invasive interventions performed at the intensive care unit. A 10-year-old male patient with Wilson disease (Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease Score of 42, Child-Pugh score of 12, total bilirubin 40 mg/dL, platelet count 55000/mL, hemoglobin level 6.3 g/dL, albumin level 1.7 g/dL, urinary copper level 4305 μ/24 h) was closely monitored in the pediatric intensive care unit of our liver transplantation center for care of a worsened general status. A deceased-donor liver transplant was performed using a right lobe liver graft (ex vivo split) obtained through the national organ sharing network. The patient developed rightward deviation of eyes and altered consciousness after the procedure and underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography examinations. The cranial magnetic resonance image, taken on the third postoperative day, revealed lesions consistent with embolic infarction, and the computed tomography scan, taken on the eighth day, showed intracerebral hemorrhage. Decompressive craniotomy, which included hematoma drainage and catheter placement, was performed. Culture and histopathologic examinations of the hematoma material revealed a Penicillium species of fungi. However, the patient died before a definitive diagnosis was made. The aim of this report is to raise awareness on early posttransplant opportunistic infections of the central nervous system presenting with intracranial hemorrhage following liver transplant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver tissue situated outside the liver with a hepatic connection is usually called an accessory liver, and that without a connection to the mother liver, is called ectopic liver tissue.
AIM To identify studies in the literature on ectopic liver tissue located on the gallbladder surface or mesentery.
METHODS We present two patients and review published articles on ectopic liver tissue located on the gallbladder surface accessed via PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Google databases. Keywords used included accessory liver lobe, aberrant liver tissue, ectopic liver tissue, ectopic liver nodule, heterotopic liver tissue, hepatic choristoma, heterotopic liver tissue on the gallbladder, and ectopic liver tissue on the gallbladder. The search included articles published before June 2020 with no language restriction. Letters to the editor, case reports, review articles, original articles, and meeting presentations were included in the search. Articles or abstracts containing adequate information on age, sex, history of liver disease, preliminary diagnosis, radiologic tools, lesion size, surgical indication, surgical procedure, and histopathological features of ectopic liver tissue were included in the study.
RESULTS A total of 72 articles involving 91 cases of ectopic liver tissue located on the gallbladder surface or mesentery were analyzed. Of these 91 patients, 62 were female and 25 were male (no gender available for 4 patients), and the age range was 5 d to 91 years. Forty-nine patients underwent surgery for chronic cholecystitis or cholelithiasis, and 14 patients underwent surgery for acute cholecystitis. The remaining 28 patients underwent laparotomy for other reasons. Cholecystectomy was laparoscopic in 69 patients and open in 11 patients. The remaining 19 patients underwent various other surgical procedures such as autopsy, liver transplantation, living donor hepatectomy, Whipple procedure, and liver segment V resection. Histopathologically, hepatocellular carcinoma was detected in the ectopic liver tissue of one patient.
CONCLUSION Ectopic liver tissue is a rare developmental anomaly which is usually detected incidentally. Although most studies suggest that ectopic liver located outside the gallbladder has a high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, this is not reflected in statistical analysis.

Abstract
Intra-abdominal aggressive fibromatosis is a locally aggressive tumor mostly originating from the mesentery or retroperitoneal space, infiltrating adjacent tissues, and very rarely metastasizing to distant organs. There are only two case reports in the English language literature where intra-abdominal aggressive fibromatosis originated from the intestinal wall. In this study, we aimed to report a case of aggressive fibromatosis originating from the muscularis propria layer of the duodenum and invading pancreas. Another interesting aspect of this case is that a primary paraduodenal hydatid cyst was incidentally detected in the surgical specimen. A 46-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with postprandial nausea and vomiting. A contrast-enhanced abdominal computerized tomography revealed a mass lesion with a size of 100 mm × 80 mm which originated from the distal pancreas and compressed the gastric pilor externally. Upon exploration the distal part of duodenum, proximal jejunum, and pancreatic mass were noted to form a conglomerated structure. Therefore, the fourth part of the duodenum, a 25 cm part of the proximal jejunum, distal pancreas, and the spleen were excised en-bloc. The pathology report of the specimen indicated fibromatosis with a diameter of 55 mm that originated from the muscularis propria of the duodenum and extended into the pancreatic parenchyma. There was also an incidentally detected 10 mm paraduodenal hydatid cyst. No tumor recurrence was detected at a follow-up period of 24 mo. In conclusion, the most ideal treatment of desmoid-type fibromatosis is surgical resection of the mass lesion with clean surgical borders. Although rare, this tumor may originate from the intestinal wall. Histopathological verification is of great significance for a proper diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Transarterial chemoembolization is a potential risk factor for hepatic artery damage, which may lead to severe consequences. We aimed to investigate this controversial issue in our population of liver transplant patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between March 2006 and December 2016, a total of 262 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma underwent liver transplant at our institution. Of these, 22 (8.4%) had preoperative transarterial chemoembolization. We retrospectively reviewed the data of all patients, comparing those who did and did not undergo transarterial chemoembolization. RESULTS The groups were similar in terms of patient sex, mean age, mean alpha-fetoprotein levels, and Milan criteria. The nontransarterial chemoembolization group had a significantly higher mean Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score. Hepatic artery thrombosis after liver transplantation was diagnosed in 6 of 22 patients (27%) in the transarterial chemoembolization group and in 12 of 240 patients (5%) in the nontransarterial chemoembolization group (P = .002). Retransplant was performed in 5 of the 6 patients with hepatic artery thrombosis in the transarterial chemoembolization group and 3 of the 12 patients in the nontransarterial chemoembolization group (P = .04). CONCLUSIONS In patients who undergo transarterial chemoembolization before liver transplantation, the incidence of hepatic artery thrombosis and retransplantation is significantly higher than in those who do not undergo this intervention. The tissues should be carefully handled at the time of transplantation to prevent trauma that may cause intimal dissection in the fragile vessels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Drug induced acute toxic hepatitis can be idiosyncratic. Albendazole, a widely used broad spectrum antiparasitic drug is generally accepted as a safe drug. It may cause asymptomatic transient liver enzyme abnormalities but acute toxic hepatitis is very rare. Case Report : Herein, we present the case of 47 year old woman with recurrent acute toxic hepatitis after a single intake of albendazole in 2010 and 2014. The patient was presented with symptoms and findings of anorexia, vomiting and jaundice. For diagnosis, other acute hepatitis etiologies were excluded. Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method (RUCAM) score was calculated and found to be 10, which meant highly probable drug hepatotoxicity. Within 2 months, all pathological findings came to normal. RESULT There are a few reported cases of albendazole induced toxic hepatitis, but at adults, there is no known recurrent acute toxic hepatitis due to albendazole at this certainty according to RUCAM score. CONCLUSION Physicians should be aware of this rare and potentially fatal adverse effect of albendazole.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Wilson disease is a rare genetic disease with clinical and histopathologic differential diagnostic challenges. In this study, we evaluated the histopathologic findings of explanted livers in Wilson disease, with special emphasis on copper histochemistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our study group was recruited by reviewing archived histopathology reports and the liver transplant clinic patient records retrospectively for patients who had liver transplant for Wilson disease between January 2010 and June 2015, at Turgut Ozal Medical Center. Archival slides were reevaluated. When needed, relevant clinical and laboratory data were obtained from patient medical records. RESULTS During the selected period, there were 33 patients fitting the study criteria (22 male, 11 female, mean age of 22 ± 11 y). All patients had mild to moderate septal inflammation. We found that 29 patients (88%) showed glycogenated hepatocyte nuclei and 27 patients (79%) showed nuclear pleomorphism. Other histopathologic findings were cholestasis (48%) and macrovesicular steatosis (39%). There was no special finding in hilar regions except for 2 patients who had recanalized portal vein thrombosis. In terms of copper histochemistry, 2 copper stains, Timm silver sulfide and rhodanine, were performed in all cases, with orcein staining only done for 25 of the cases. Positivity rates for these copper stains were 85%, 82%, and 36%. Periodic acid-Schiff-diastase- and periodic acid-Schiff-positive granules were detected in 7 of 33 patients (21%). Iron deposition was seen in 12 patients (focal and/or minimal in 11, more than focal in 1). There was no dysplasia or malignancy in any of the patients. CONCLUSIONS On routine hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides, detection of glycogenated hepatocyte nuclei and the finding of the nuclear pleomorphism should alert the pathologist for the possibility of Wilson disease, especially with cryptogenic liver disease. Timm stain is a more convenient histochemical stain in revealing copper deposition in liver.

Abstract
Spinal cord haemangioblastomas are rare central nervous systems tumours, and haemorrhage.It is an uncommon occurance. We report a 28-year-old pregnant patient who presented with paraplegia due to acute haemorrhage of a spinal haemangioblastoma. Magnetic resonance imaging showed extensive syrinx cavities, an intramedullary lesion at the T4-T5 spinal cord level e, and a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Digital subtraction angiography showed the feeding artery and dilated tortuous draining vein within the dural sac. The lesion was deemed a haemangioblastoma. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Postoperatively, the paraplegia improved and the patient was able to walk within 2 weeks. Imaging is important for early diagnosis to prevent patients persistent neurological deficits.

Abstract
We evaluated the ability of apricot to attenuate apoptosis and oxidative stress developed during the process of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) and radiotherapy in the liver of rats bearing liver damage. Fifty female Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups; (i) normal control rats; (ii) rats fed with standard diet with apricot (20%), (ii) rats fed with standard diet and administrated 6 gray radiotherapy with Co 60 device applied to a single fraction, (iv) rats fed with standard diet and administered intraperitoneally DMBA (20mg/kg), (v) rats fed with standard diet and administered DMBA and 6 gray radiotherapy, (vi) rats fed with standard rat diet and administered DMBA and supplemented apricot, (vii) rats fed with standard diet supplemented apricot administered DMBA and radiotherapy (RT) for 6weeks. Expression of Bax, caspase 3, and glutathione activity decreased in the liver but liver expression of NF-κB, AP-1, CREB, Bcl-2 and ALT, AST, 5'NT, MDA, NO levels increased in DMBA-induced liver damage rats. In conclusion, the results suggest that apricot supplementation and irradiation given in combination, offer maximum protection against DMBA-induced hepatic carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, due to modern lifestyles and exposure to chemical carcinogens, cancer cases are steadily increasing. From this standpoint, azoxymethane (AOM), a chemical carcinogen which causes de novo liver damage, and resveratrol, which is an antioxidant found in foods and protects against oxidative stress damage, are of interest. We here aimed to evaluate whether resveratrol could protect the liver tissues from the effects of AOM. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was conducted in 4 groups, each consisting of seven rats, the first receiving only AOM (2 times per week, 5 mg/kg), group 2 AOM and resveratrol (2 times a week, 20 mg/kg), group 3 assessed only as a control and group 4 administered only resveratrol. At the end of the seventh week, the rats were sacrificed. Rat liver MDA, NO, GSH levels were analyzed biochemically, as well as the tissues being evaluated histopathologically. RESULTS MDA and NO increased in AOM group as signs of increased oxidative stress. The group concomitantly administered resveratrol was been found to be significantly decreased in MDA and NO levels and increased in GSH activity. However, there were no significant findings on histopathological evaluation. CONCLUSIONS In the light of these results, resveratrol appears to exert protective effect on oxidative stress in the liver tissue due to deleterious effects of chemical carcinogens.

Abstract
Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the head and neck region, associated with Castleman's disease (CD), is an extremely rare entity. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case demonstrating the transformation of the former into the latter as documented in the same lymph node disection material. A 45-year-old female presented to our hospital with right sided neck swelling. Radiologic imaging showed a well defined 3.5 x 3.5 cm mass of soft tissue at the right side of the neck with multiple bilateral cervical lymph nodes. Excision of the right neck mass with lymph node disection was performed. Microscopic examination and immunohistochemical findings showed features of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The associated lymph nodes exhibited changes consistent with hyaline-vascular type CD, follicular dendritic cell hyperplasia and foci of overgrowth in which FDCS possibly evolved. This report confirms the evolving of FDCS in the setting of follicular dendritic cell hyperplasia occurring in Castleman's disease.

Abstract
Human orf is a viral zoonotic infection caused by Parapoxvirus. The skin lesions of human orf can be misdiagnosed as cutaneous anthrax leading to overtreatment and also fear. This study was conducted to analyze an outbreak which led to deaths among kids and lambs in the same flock, and skin lesions in some persons who were living on the same farm that were initially diagnosed as cutaneous anthrax by a practitioner. Eight patients with skin lesions and eleven persons who had no skin lesion were considered as patients and control groups, respectively. The cultures obtained from the lesions of all patients were negative for Bacillus anthracis. The diagnosis of skin lesions was done by clinical findings, histopathological examination and PCR as human orf. To be under 20 years of age, direct contact with the animals, and contact with flayed skin of sick animals were the risk factors for human orf (Odds Ratio 7.5; 95% Confidence Interval 1.02-54.54, OR 12.25; 95% CI:1.3-100.9, OR 16.67; 95% CI:1.65-148.20, respectively). Orf should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of skin lesions resembling anthrax. For control and prevention of orf, transmission routes should be known; good hand hygiene and other personal protective measures have to be implemented.

Background
 High mammographic density is associated with up to a 6-fold increased risk of breast cancer. Pathways responsible for this increased density are unknown. We hypothesize that specific molecular pathways exist that are associated with increased mammographic density and breast cancer risk, and may therefore be used to identify potential targets for chemoprevention.
 Methods
 Histologically confirmed normal breast tissue was collected from women undergoing breast surgery who had available demographic data and mammograms for review. Breast parenchymal density was classified according to the American College of Radiology's Breast Imaging – Reporting and Data System reporting system. Quantitative classification of mammographic parenchyma was performed using thresholding method and percent density. Women with low (less than 50%) versus high (greater than 50%) breast density were compared. Double-stranded cDNA was synthesized from the normal breast tissue using an oligo-dT primer containing a T7 RNA polymerase promoter, followed by in vitro transcription with biotinylated ribonucleotides. The labeled cRNA was hybridized to Affymetrix HG U133Plus2 chips which comprise ∼28,600 genes to determine gene expression patterns. Immunohistochemical analysis (IHC) of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, proliferation (Ki67) and COX2 expression was performed.
 Results
 Sixty-two women were identified, 26 (42%) had high, and 36 (58%) had low mammographic density. Neither age, menopausal nor hormone receptor status influenced the gene expression pattern. Seventy-three genes had differential expression between normal breast tissue with high and low mammographic density (p<0.001, fold change>1.5) and had a low false discovery rate (<10%). Of these 73 differentially expressed genes, network and canonical pathway analysis demonstrate decreased TGFβ signaling (TGFBR2, SOS, SMAD3 and CD44 expression) in dense breast relative to non-dense breast. By IHC, Ki67 (stroma) and COX2 expression were significantly higher in dense breasts (p<0.05) on univariate analysis, and only COX2 expression in the stroma was statistically significant at (p<0.01) on multivariate analysis.
 Conclusion
 TGFβ ligands are currently the only growth factors known to prevent mammary epithelial cell proliferation. TGFβ has been reported to influence COX-2 expression, and these molecules are highly differentially expressed in individuals at high risk of developing breast cancer. These results suggest that COX2 inhibition should be further investigated for breast cancer prevention despite possible increase in cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Nitroimidazole derivatives are commonly used in the treatment of protozoal and anaerobic infections, and reports of their hepatotoxicity are rare. We report a case of severe hepatitis due to the long-term (8 weeks) use of ornidazole. A 27-year-old woman presented for evaluation of elevated serum transaminase and total bilirubin levels. Liver biopsy revealed portal inflammation, hepatocellular and canalicular cholestasis, porto-portal and portocentral bridging fibrosis, and a tendency to form nodules. No aetiological factors associated with chronic liver disease were identified. The abdominal ultrasonographic findings were compatible with chronic liver disease. We therefore made the diagnosis of severe hepatitis resulting from the long-term use of ornidazole. We conclude that nitroimidazole derivatives may lead to serious liver damage, especially in female patients.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the incidence of Enterobius vermicularis in the appendices of the adult population and a possible relationship between E. vermicularis and acute appendicitis. E. vermicularis was identified in 18 (2%) of 890 patients. Six hundred sixty-five operations were performed for presumptive diagnosis of acute appendicitis, and E. vermicularis was found in 12 (2%) patients. The histopathological examination revealed acute inflammatory cells in four cases (33%). Three of these four specimens included luminal ova and one E. vermicularis. Histopathological examination of six cases revealed E. vermicularis in 225 incidental appendectomies with no evidence of either acute or chronic inflammatory cells. This study suggests a relationship between the presence of E. vermicularis ova and acute inflammation, but the presence of the pinworm in the lumen of the appendix is coincidental. On the other hand E. vermicularis in the appendix lumen can cause symptoms of acute appendicitis.

Abstract
Cholestasis, or impaired bile flow, occurs in a wide variety of liver diseases and causes hepatic damage by retention and accumulation of toxic hydrophobic bile salts inducing persistent inflammation and oxidative stress. In the present research, we studied the effect of leflunomide, a novel immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory agent against autoimmune disease, on hepatic damage produced by double ligature of the extrahepatic biliary duct in Wistar Albino rats. Cholestasis was done by double ligature and section of the extrahepatic biliary duct (BDL). Leflunomide was given i.g. 10 mg/kg/day. The severity of cholestasis and hepatic injury was determined by changes in the plasma enzyme activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and levels of direct bilirubin. Malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), nitric oxide (NO), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined to the oxidative status in the liver tissue. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and levels of tissue hydroxyproline (HPR) were determined to neutrophil activation and collagen accumulation, respectively. Further, histological changes were studied. Treatment with leflunomide markedly reduced serum transaminase activities as compared to BDL rats. At the same time leflunomide significantly inhibited increases in liver MDA, PC and NO levels and also attenuated the depletion of CAT and SOD in the liver after bile duct ligation. Similarly, increase in tissue MPO activity and HPR due to BDL was also attenuated by leflunomide treatment. These findings were supported by histopathological findings. These findings suggested that leflunomide can attenuate hepatic damage in extrahepatic cholestasis by prevention of oxidative stress and inflammatory process.

Abstract
The high capacity of liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (PH) is well known. This study investigated the role of the antioxidant defense system in regeneration among Wistar-albino male rats subjected to 70% partial hepatectomy after a pretreatment period of 2 weeks with eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) rich fish oil (FO), first pressed virgin olive oil (OO), or vitamin E. The control group of 10 rats underwent PH only. On postoperative day 3, all rats were humanely killed. Liver sections of animals treated with FO or vitamin E showed significant increases in regeneration within both liver parenchyma and cut surface compared with the control group (P < .05). Liver sections of OO displayed an insignificant increase in liver regeneration (P > .05), with less increase in parenchyma than of the cut surface. The enhancement of the liver parenchymal regeneration in the FO group was significantly greater than that of the vitamin E group. Concerning liver function tests (LFT), there was no significant difference among the groups. When the treatment groups were compared to the control group glutathione (GSH) levels were increased and content of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were decreased. Based on these results, we concluded that after 70% PH in rats, the liver parenchyma and cut surface regeneration were greatest with FO and least with OO treatment. Both FO and vitamin E served to improve the antioxidant defense system more than OO treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Bacterial translocation (BT) has been implicated in the development of infectious complications in many serious clinical conditions such as fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). We aimed to investigate the effects of Gingko biloba (GB), vitamin E (Vit E) and melatonin on intestinal oxidative damage and BT in thioacetamide (TAA)-induced FHF in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 42 rats were divided into five groups. Group 1 (n = 8) was the control group. Group 2 (n = 10) was the TAA group, in which rats received 350 mg/kg TAA daily by the intraperitoneal (ip) route for 3 days. Oral 100 mg/kg GB per day was administered to group 3 (n = 8), oral 200 mg/kg Vit E per day to group 4 (n = 8) and ip 3 mg/kg melatonin per day to group 5 (n = 8) 48 h prior to the first TAA injection and was continued for 5 consecutive days. RESULTS When compared with the control group, serious hepatic and intestinal oxidative damage, increased Escherichia coli counts in ileal aspirates and high BT frequencies were observed in the TAA group (all p < 0.0001). Only GB treatment attenuated hepatic oxidative damage (p < 0.0001). There was no difference in intestinal oxidative damage, E. coli counts in ileal aspirates and BT frequency between TAA and the other antioxidant treatment groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that intestinal oxidative damage plays a major role in the development of BT by disrupting the barrier function of intestinal mucosa.

Abstract
SUMMARY A Song's nasolacrimal duct stent was placed in a patient with epiphora due to primary nasolacrimal duct obstruction and the stent was kept for 32 months. Mitomycin C 0.02% eye drops four times a day were prescribed for four weeks following polyurethane stent placement procedure. No epiphora-related complaints occurred for thirty months after then the epiphora started. Nasolacrimal stent was removed from nasal cavity endoscopially and the tissues within the extruded stent were examined histopathologically. The patient's complaints were relieved following stent removal. Dacryocystogram revealed normal passage and a filling defect within the lacrimal sac. Macroscopic evaluation of the stent revealed a firm mass in the stent mushroom, causing complete obstruction. Pathological examination of the mass revealed chronic inflammation, increased connective tissue and vascular proliferation. Nasolacrimal polyurethane stents can be removed easily by nasal approach. Nasolacrimal passage may be left open temporarily after stent removal. The use of Mitomycin C drop is a novel approach in nasolacrimal stent placement cases. However, when the long-term results of endoscopic and external dacryocystorhinostomy are considered, further research is needed on the biocompatibility of stent material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Primary impact to the spinal cord causes rapid oxidative stress after injury. To protect neural tissue, it is important to prevent secondary pathophysiological mechanisms. Etomidate, a strong antiexcitotoxic agent, stimulates the gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. The purpose of this study was to investigate neurobehavioral and histological recovery and to evaluate the biochemical responses to treatment of experimental spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats with etomidate or methylprednisolone (MP) or both etomidate and MP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-two rats were randomly allocated into six groups: a control group (laminectomy alone), a trauma group (laminectomy+trauma), a methylprednisolone group (30 mg/kg MP), an etomidate group (2 mg/kg), a methylprednisolone and etomidate combined treatment group (30 mg/kg MP and 2 mg/kg etomidate) and a vehicle group. Six rats from each group were killed at the 24th hour after the injury. Malondialdehyde, glutathione, nitric oxide and xanthine oxidase levels were measured. Neurological functions of the remaining rats were recorded weekly. Six weeks after injury, all of those rats were killed for histopathological assessment. RESULTS Etomidate treatment revealed similar neurobehavioral and histopathological recovery to MP treatment 6 weeks after injury. Combined treatment did not provide additional neuroprotection. CONCLUSION Etomidate treatment immediately after spinal cord injury has similar neuroprotection to MP. In spite of different neuroprotection mechanisms, combined treatment with MP and etomidate does not provide extra protection.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to investigate the effects of methylene blue (MB) on NO production, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation in lung injury during different stages of sepsis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 20): group C, sham operated; group CMB, sham operated and receiving MB (25 mg/kg, i.p.); group S, sepsis; group SMB, sepsis and receiving MB (25 mg/kg, i.p.). Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The MB dose was administered after CLP. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups (n = 10) which were sacrificed at 9 or 18 h after the surgical procedure. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and MPO activity, total nitrite/nitrate and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the lung tissue were measured. Lung injury was graded from 1 (injury to 25% of the field) to 4 (diffuse injury) by the pathologist. RESULTS In group SMB, while SOD and CAT increased in both early and late sepsis periods, GSH-PX increased significantly only in the early sepsis period when compared with group S. Increase in lung MPO activity after CLP-induced sepsis was prevented by MB administration. MB significantly decreased to nitrite/nitrate and MDA levels both in early and late sepsis periods when compared with group S (p < 0.05). Group S showed a marked increase in neutrophil infiltration into the interstitial space and thickening of the alveolar septa, whereas the alveolar damage score was lower in the SMB group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION MB reduced the MPO activity and lipid peroxidation by both decreasing oxidative stress and NO overproduction in the lungs, which resulted in the attenuation of lung injury after CLP-induced sepsis in rats.

Abstract
Schwannomas are encapsulated benign tumours arising from nerve sheath cells, of which ancient schwannoma is one of five variants. Since the first description, only a few ancient schwannomas have been reported in different locations in the head and neck region. In the parotid gland, this tumour is very rare. In this report, a 41-year-old female patient with an ancient schwannoma of the parotid gland is presented and the data of this patient compared with other (comparable) cases described in the literature.

Abstract
Findings of renal osteodystrophy in cranial bones are not uncommon and include osteomalacia, osteosclerosis, erosion of the cortical bone, brown tumors and resorption of the lamina dura. However, massive thickening of the cranial vault and facial bones, called uremic leontiasis ossea, have been reported very rare. In the present article, we describe the case of an uncooperative female patient with a brown tumor, involving the left maxillary sinus and massive thickening of the cranial vault and facial bones, secondary to severe secondary hyperparathyroidism during 8 years of regular hemodialysis treatment.

Abstract
The established relationship between tamoxifen and the development of endometrial cancer causes differential diagnostic problems between metastatic and primary uterine neoplasms. A 45-year-old woman underwent modified radical mastectomy because of left-breast cancer. She presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding 6 years later, while still on tamoxifen therapy. The endometrial curettage revealed undifferentiated adenocarcinoma. She underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salphingoopherectomy as well as pelvic and periaortic lymphadenectomy. Microscopic examination revealed neoplastic cells which formed sheets and duct-like structures in the endometrium. The pattern was not that of a primary endometrial tumour and an immunohistochemical staining was performed using human breast gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 (GCDFP-15) which was found out to be positive in the tumour cells. A diagnosis of metastatic ductal carcinoma of the breast in the uterus was rendered. Uterine metastasis should be kept in mind in patients with a history of breast cancer who are on tamoxifen therapy.
