Observations with KIDs Interferometer Spectrum Survey (KISS)

We describe the preliminary on-sky results of the KIDs Interferometer Spectrum Survey (KISS), a spectral imager with a 1 deg field of view (FoV). The instrument operates in the range 120–180 GHz from the 2.25m Q-U-I JOint TEnerife telescope in Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Canary Islands), at 2 395m altitude above sea level. Spectra at low resolution, up to 1.45 GHz, are obtained using a fast (3.72 Hz mechanical frequency) Fourier transform spectrometer, coupled to a continuous dilution cryostat with a stabilized temperature of 170mK that hosts two 316-pixel arrays of lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors. KISS generates more than 3 000 spectra per second during observations and represents a pathfinder to demonstrate the potential for spectral mapping with large FoV.We give an overall description of the spectral mapping paradigm and we present recent results from observations, in this paper.

Millimetric Sardinia radio Telescope Receiver based on Array of Lumped elements kids

MISTRAL is a millimetric camera working in the W-band (78–103 GHz) which will take data from the Sardinia Radio Telescope, the Italian 64-m radio telescope located 50 km form Cagliari, at 600m above the sea level, in Sardinia. It is being built as a facility instrument by the Sapienza University for INAF, that manages the radio telescope, under a PON contract. It will consist of a compact cryostat hosting the re–imaging optics, cooled at 4K, and a 408–pixel array of photon–noise limited lumped element kinetic inductance detectors fabricated at CNR-IFN and cooled at a base temperature lower than 300mK. MISTRAL will be able to investigate a long list of scientific targets spanning from extragalactic astrophysics to solar system science, with high angular resolution (~ 12 arcsec), including Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect measurements and the study of the Cosmic Web.

KISS: a spectrometric imager for millimetre cosmology

Clusters of galaxies are used to map the large-scale structures in the universe and as probe of universe evolution. They can be observed through the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. In this respect the spectro-imaging at low resolution frequency is an important tool, today, for the study of cluster of galaxies. We have developed KISS (KIDs Interferometer Spectrum Survey), a spectrometric imager dedicated to the secondary anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The multi-frequency approach permits to improve the component separation with respect to predecessor experiments. In this paper, firstly, we provide a description of the scientific context and the state of the art of SZ observations. Secondly, we describe the KISS instrument. Finally, we show preliminary results of the ongoing commissioning campaign.

Balloon-borne Cosmic Microwave Background experiments

Stratospheric balloon experiments play a unique role in current Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) studies. CMB research has entered a precision phase, harvesting the detailed properties of its anisotropy, polarization and spectrum, at incredible precision levels. These measurements, however, require careful monitoring and subtraction of local backgrounds, produced by the earth atmosphere and the interstellar medium. High frequencies (larger than 180 GHz) are crucial for the measurements of interstellar dust contamination, but are degraded by atmospheric emission and its fluctuations, even in the best (cold and dry) sites on earth. For this reason, new balloon-borne missions, exploiting long-duration and ultra-long duration stratospheric flights, are being developed in several laboratories worldwide. These experiments have the double purpose of qualifying instrumentation and validating methods to be used on satellite missions, and produce CMB science at a relatively fast pace, synergically to ground-based CMB observatories.

CALDER: neutrinoless double-beta decay identification in TeO[Formula: see text] bolometers with kinetic inductance detectors

Next-generation experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay must be sensitive to a Majorana neutrino mass as low as 10[Formula: see text]. CUORE , an array of 988 TeO[Formula: see text] bolometers being commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, features an expected sensitivity of 50-130[Formula: see text] at 90 % C.L. The background is expected to be dominated by [Formula: see text] radioactivity, and can be in principle removed by detecting the small amount of Cherenkov  light emitted by the [Formula: see text] signal. The Cryogenic wide-Area Light Detectors with Excellent Resolution project aims at developing a small prototype experiment consisting of TeO[Formula: see text] bolometers coupled to high-sensitivity light detectors based on kinetic inductance detectors. The R&D is focused on the light detectors in view of the implementation in a next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment.

Joint analysis of BICEP2/keck array and Planck Data

We report the results of a joint analysis of data from BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck. BICEP2 and Keck Array have observed the same approximately 400  deg^{2} patch of sky centered on RA 0 h, Dec. -57.5°. The combined maps reach a depth of 57 nK deg in Stokes Q and U in a band centered at 150 GHz. Planck has observed the full sky in polarization at seven frequencies from 30 to 353 GHz, but much less deeply in any given region (1.2  μK deg in Q and U at 143 GHz). We detect 150×353 cross-correlation in B modes at high significance. We fit the single- and cross-frequency power spectra at frequencies ≥150  GHz to a lensed-ΛCDM model that includes dust and a possible contribution from inflationary gravitational waves (as parametrized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio r), using a prior on the frequency spectral behavior of polarized dust emission from previous Planck analysis of other regions of the sky. We find strong evidence for dust and no statistically significant evidence for tensor modes. We probe various model variations and extensions, including adding a synchrotron component in combination with lower frequency data, and find that these make little difference to the r constraint. Finally, we present an alternative analysis which is similar to a map-based cleaning of the dust contribution, and show that this gives similar constraints. The final result is expressed as a likelihood curve for r, and yields an upper limit r_{0.05}<0.12 at 95% confidence. Marginalizing over dust and r, lensing B modes are detected at 7.0σ significance.

Cosmology from MAXIMA-1, BOOMERANG, and COBE DMR cosmic microwave background observations

Recent results from BOOMERANG-98 and MAXIMA-1, taken together with COBE DMR, provide consistent and high signal-to-noise measurements of the cosmic microwave background power spectrum at spherical harmonic multipole bands over 2<l less similar to 800. Analysis of the combined data yields 68% (95%) confidence limits on the total density, Omega(tot) approximately 1.11+/-0.07 (+0.13)(-0.12), the baryon density, Omega(b)h(2) approximately 0.032(+0.005)(-0.004) (+0.009)(-0.008), and the scalar spectral tilt, n(s) approximately 1.01(+0.09)(-0.07) (+0.17)(-0.14). These data are consistent with inflationary initial conditions for structure formation. Taken together with other cosmological observations, they imply the existence of both nonbaryonic dark matter and dark energy in the Universe.

Baffling and Shielding System for a Millimeter-Wave balloonborne Telescope

We describe a balloonborne telescope devoted to millimeter observations of diffuse sky radiation and optimized with a custom set of baffles and shields. The basic idea of the shield design is to shape the surfaces as roof mirrors to redirect the stray radiation in the opposite direction of incidence. The baffles are used to stop radiation close to the field of view. In this way we are able to avoid most of the unwanted radiation. We successfully operated this telescope (ARGO) during two flights, in 1989 and 1993, while detecting the faint structures of the cosmic microwave background at degree scale.

High-performance wobbling subreflector for the Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory 2.6-m telescope

The Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory 2.6-m Cassegrain telescope has been designed to allow high-sensitivity observations in the millimeter spectral range. For this purpose, in order to reduce unwanted contributions from local foregrounds, we adopted a sky-chopping technique, by wobbling the telescope subreflector. We describe the design and performance of the wobbling system, which can endure external forced two and three fields square-wave modulation and includes features such as high frequency, high amplitude, high duty cycle, low microphonics, and high stability.
