Abstract
The introduction of carbon black particles as packaging material for liquid chromatography columns dates back to the late 70's, in an attempt to overcome common drawbacks associated with silica-based packings. The latter consisted of the difficulty in eliminating or shielding the polar residual silanol groups, responsible for secondary interactions with non-polar ligands, but also the fragility and instability of the bonded ligands. Since then, numerous advances have been made in the synthesis of carbon-based stationary phases, achieving excellent objectives in terms of chromatographic performance and versatility, mainly related to the possibility of working under a wide range of pH (1-14) and temperature (higher than 200 °C). The purpose of this review is to summarize the most significant advances in the synthesis and application of the porous graphitic carbon phase (PGC), in the last decade. Literature reports based on the use of PGC columns are focused on the analysis of a wide range of chemicals, spanning from polar compounds to apolar polymers. More in detail, polar analytes have included both small molecules and larger biomolecules (such as oligo- and polysaccharides, peptides, and glycopeptides), with special emphasis on additional selectivity for isomer separation. On the other hand, applications devoted to the analysis of non-polar analytes could benefit from the use of high temperatures, allowing for the achievement of satisfactory separations within reduced analysis time.

Abstract
The validity of omega 3 fatty acids (ω3 FAs), mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as dietary supplements has been widely proved. It's well known in fact, that they protect against cardiovascular diseases, reduce the levels of triacylglycerides (TAGs) and cholesteryl esters (CEs) in blood, and have anti-inflammatory activity. For these reasons, in the last few years the production of dietary supplement containing ω3 has increased significantly. In this context, the possibility to obtain ω3 and other high value molecules from alternative sources as fish waste, in accordance with the principles of circular economy, becomes an enormous attractive. In addition, the opportunity of creating new products, with greater health benefits, represents an interesting challenge. The current study was focused on the extraction of ω3 fatty acids and peptides from tuna waste industry, to realize a new dietary supplement. To this purpose, a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method was developed to separate, isolate, and enrich the different fractions subsequently used to produce an innovative formulate. The obtained supplement was characterized in terms of fatty acids esterified ester (FAEE) composition by gas chromatography (GC) coupled to both flame ionization detection (FID) and mass spectrometry (MS), and content of heavy metals by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The effects of ω3 supplementation on metabolism and circulating lipid profiles was tested on 12 volunteers and assessed by GC-FID analysis of whole blood collected on paper support (Dried Blood Spot, DBS) at the beginning of the study and after thirty days. The results of plasma fatty acids levels after 30 days showed a significant decrease in the ω6/ω3 ratio, as well as the saturated/polyunsaturated fatty acids (SFA/PUFA) ratio, compared to subjects who took the ω3 ethyl esters unformulated. The novel formulated supplements proved to be extremely interesting and promising products, due to a significant increase in bioavailability, that makes it highly competitive in the current panorama of the nutraceutical industry.

Abstract
The present research aimed to retrieve key information about the genuineness of Sicilian lemon essential oils by evaluating simultaneously the chiral and isotopic data of target terpene components. With respect to previous literature references, where chiral recognition and isotope discrimination were performed by distinct gas chromatographic methods, this study aimed to develop a single analytical approach. To overcome limitations associated to monodimensional gas chromatographic approaches, an enantio‑selective multidimensional gas chromatographic approach coupled to isotopic ratio mass spectrometry and to parallel single quadrupole detection (Es-MDGC-C-IRMS/qMS) was developed. Thanks to the features of this system, enantiomeric excesses and target δ13C of the chiral and achiral components were evaluated in a single gas chromatographic run, allowing to reduce total time analysis, as well the consumption of electricity, solvents and samples. Moreover, due to the capability to baseline separate the enantiomeric couples, further considerations were done about the specific δ13C value of the target separated enantiomers. Dealing with the genuine lemon oils analysed, a different δ13C value was found between the enantiomers of the same chiral component, namely (-) and (+) of α and β-pinene, suggesting a different isotopic fractionation related to a specific biosynthetic pathway. This research aimed to evaluate the reasons behind this behaviour, paving the way to newer considerations in the field of authenticity assessment.

Abstract
Separation science plays a crucial role in the isolation of novel compounds contained in complex matrices. Yet their rationale employment needs preliminary structure elucidation, which usually requires sufficient aliquots of grade substances to characterize the molecule by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. In this study, two peculiar oxa-tricycloundecane ethers were isolated by means of preparative multidimensional gas chromatography from the brown alga species Dictyota dichotoma (Huds.) Lam., aiming to assign their 3D structures. Density functional theory simulations were carried out to select the correct configurational species matching the experimental NMR data (in terms of enantiomeric couples). In this case, the theoretical approach was crucial as the protonic signal overlap and spectral overcrowding were preventing any other unambiguous structural information. Just after the identification through the density functional theory data matching of the correct relative configuration it was possible to verify an enhanced self-consistency with the experimental data, confirming the stereochemistry. The results obtained further pave the way toward structure elucidation of highly asymmetric molecules, whose configuration cannot be inferred by other means or strategies.

Abstract
During the Covid-19 pandemic, health agencies worldwide have recommended frequent handwashing and sanitizing. A variety of hand gel products were made available on the market, often with fragrances added to curtail the strong smell of alcohol. Commonly used Citrus fragrances contain volatile aroma constituents and non-volatile oxygen heterocyclic compounds (OHCs), consisting mostly of polymethoxyflavones, coumarins, and furocoumarins. The latter have long been investigated for their phototoxic properties, and their safety as cosmetic product ingredients has been debated recurrently. To this concern, twelve commercial Citrus-scented products were investigated in this study. An extraction method was optimized for thirty-seven OHC compounds, obtaining absolute mean recovery values in the 73.5-116% range with only few milliliters of solvent consumption. Analysis by ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection evidenced that three samples did not conform to the labeling requirements for fragrance allergens (coumarin) laid down by the European Union Regulation on Cosmetic Products. The total furocoumarin (FC) content of the samples investigated was in the 0.003-3.7ppm range, with some noteworthy exceptions. Specifically, in two samples, the total FCs were quantified as 89 and 219 ppm, thus exceeding the safe limits recommended up to a factor of 15. Finally, the consistency of the volatile fingerprint attained by gas chromatography allowed drawing conclusions on the authenticity of the Citrus fragrances labeled, and several products did not conform to the information reported on the label concerning the presence of essential oils. Besides the issue of product authenticity, analytical tools and regulatory actions for widespread testing of hand hygiene products are urgent, to protect consumers' health and safety.

Abstract
BackgroundPatients waiting for a kidney transplant by far exceed available organs. AB0 incompatible living donor kidney transplantation (AB0i LDKT) represents an additional therapeutic strategy, but with higher risk for complications. We aimed at evaluating outcomes of AB0i LDKTs compared to compatible (AB0c) controls at our Institution.MethodsRetrospective matched case – control study (1:2) comparing AB0i vs. AB0c LDKTs from March 2012 to September 2021. Considered outcomes: graft function, acute rejection, sepsis, CMV infection, BK virus reactivation, death-censored graft survival, patient survival.ResultsSeventeen AB0i LDKTs matched to 34 AB0c controls. We found excellent graft function, comparable in the two groups, at all considered intervals, with an eGFR (ml/min/1.73 m2) of 67 vs. 66 at 1 year (p = 0.41), 63 vs. 64 at 3 years (p = 0.53). AB0i recipients had a statistically significant higher incidence of acute rejection, acute antibody-mediated rejection and sepsis within 30 days (p = 0.016; p = 0.02; p = 0.001), 1 year (p = 0.012; p = 0.02; p = 0.0004) and 3 years (p = 0.004; p = 0.006; p = 0.012) after surgery. There was no difference in CMV infection, BK virus reactivation, death-censored graft survival between the two groups. Patient survival was inferior in AB0i group at 1 and 3 years (88.2 vs. 100%; log-rank p = 0.03) due to early death for opportunistic infections. AB0i LDKTs spent longer time on dialysis (p = 0.04) and 82.3 vs. 38.3% controls had blood group 0 (p = 0.003).ConclusionsAB0i LDKT is an effective therapeutic strategy with graft function and survival comparable to AB0c LDKTs, despite higher rates of acute rejection and sepsis. It is an additional opportunity for patients with less chances of being transplanted, as blood group 0 individuals.

Hyphenated techniques combining chromatographic and spectroscopic methods are the gold standard to effectively handle the emerging challenges in the analysis of unknown chemical components in mixtures, and in this regard the coupling of liquid chromatography to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (LC-FTIR) is no exception. While earlier attempts to couple LC to IR spectroscopy relied almost entirely on offline techniques, clear motivations for implementing online LC-FTIR instrumentation emerged from the need for shorter analysis time, a higher degree of automation and sample throughput, better reproducibility, and reduced contamination. Most recent designs of LC-FTIR concepts have aimed to combine the advantages of both approaches by means of a solvent-elimination interface. The hyphenated instrumentation and method presented in this research are based on a pneumatically assisted LC-FTIR interface, relying on a small-scale self-regulating spray dryer to attain desolvation of the LC eluent stream while retaining the spatial and temporal resolution of the dissolved substrates. Focused deposition of the dried analytes occurs onto a ZnSe disc for continuous transmission mid-IR analysis at a resolution of 4 cm-1. The optimization of the LC-FTIR technique is discussed in terms of interface parameters, limits of detection, and limits of quantification for a pair of furanocoumarin isomers differing in the position (linear or angular type) of the furan ring fused to coumarin. Finally, confident discrimination between the two closely related molecules was attained by matching the experimental FTIR spectra in a dedicated library. The quality match factors obtained were higher than 99% for both molecules. The limit of identification (LOI) was determined experimentally as the minimum amount of substance yielding a library-searchable IR spectrum (affording a quality match factor higher than 90%). Specifically, LOI of 0.6 μg and 1.25 μg was determined for psoralen and angelicin, respectively.

Abstract
The use of IRMS as a GC detector has a history going back decades, however the critical issue of wrong δ13C measurements resulting from impure peaks has been often underestimated. To this regard, multidimensional separation techniques are effective tools to improve the reliability of the data, with respect to those obtained after monodimensional analysis. The present research aims to draw attention to one critical issue, related to the reliability of the δ13C data obtained by means of monodimensional GC-C-IRMS. Although already known from the literature, such aspect has been greatly overlooked, as is reflected in the few papers reporting the use of MDGC, among the plethora of published research dealing with GC-C-IRMS applications. Hereby, a set of natural samples of complex composition were analysed to investigate the presence of minor or even undetected coelutions, and to which extent it affected the isotope ratio determination. Apart from chromatographic effects, and issues related to analytes conversion to CO2 prior to IRMS measurement, unpredictable co-elutions with compounds, either resulting from oxidation or intentionally added in fraudulent practices, could also contribute to a shift of the δ13C data, up to 10‰ and higher. Last, the influence of column bleed was investigated, as affecting the determination of the δ13C data for compounds that were eluted at high temperatures. It was finally demonstrated by the selected key studies that implementation of MDGC separation is mandatory to prevent the aforementioned issues, aiming to guarantee accurate results. In the light of the above conclusions, and considering the level of automation of heart-cut devices nowadays available, routine practice of MDGC results highly recommendable in any IRMS applications.

Abstract
Among the phencyclidine (PCP) and synthetic cathinone analogs present on the street market, 3-methoxyphencyclidine (3-MeO-PCP) is one of the most popular dissociative hallucinogen drugs, while 3-methylmethcathinone (3-MMC) is a commonly encountered psychostimulant. Numerous 3-MeO-PCP- and 3-MMC-related intoxication cases have been reported worldwide. Identification of the positional isomers of MeO-PCP and MMC families are particularly challenging for clinical and forensic laboratories; this is mostly due to their difficult chromatographic separation (particularly when using liquid chromatography–LC) and similar mass spectrometric behaviors. 3-MeO-PCP and 3-MMC were identified in two powders, detained by two subjects and seized by the police, by different analytical techniques, including liquid chromatography-high-resolution accurate-mass Orbitrap mass spectrometry (LC-HRAM-Orbitrap-MS), and solid deposition gas chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (sd-GC-FTIR). LC-HRAM-Orbitrap-MS allowed us to assign the elemental formulae C18H27NO (MeO-PCP) and C11H15NO (MMC) through accurate mass measurement of the two MH+ ions, and the comparison of experimental and calculated MH+ isotopic patterns. However, MH+ collision-induced product ions spectra were not conclusive in discriminating between the positional isomers [(3-MeO-PCP vs. 4-MeO-PCP) and (3-MMC vs. 4-MMC and 2-MMC)]. Likewise, sd-GC-FTIR easily allowed us to differentiate between the MeO-PCP and MMC positional isomers unambiguously, confirming the presence of 3-MeO-PCP and 3-MMC, due to the high-quality match factor of the experimental FTIR spectra against the target FTIR spectra of MeO-PCP and MMC isomers in a dedicated library. 3-MeO-PCP (in contrast to 3-MMC) was also detected in blood and urine samples of both subjects and analyzed in the context of routine forensic casework by LC-HRAM-Orbitrap-MS following a simple deproteinization step. In addition, this untargeted approach allowed us to detect dozens of phase I and phase II 3-MeO-PCP metabolites in all biological specimens. Analysis of the extracted samples by sd-GC-FTIR revealed the presence of 3-MeO-PCP, thus confirming the intake of such specific methoxy-PCP isomer in both cases. These results highlight the effectiveness of LC-HRAM-Orbitrap-MS and sd-GC-FTIR data in attaining full structural characterization of the psychoactive drugs, even in absence of reference standards, in both non-biological and biological specimens.

Abstract
The present work aims to a promising re-utilization of the massive waste derived from the tuna fishing industry, for which by-products can represent more than 50% of the original material. Due to the considerable content in polyunsaturated fatty acids and noble proteins, such wastes can be used as primary source of functional ingredients in the production of nutraceuticals. The composition of the lipid and protein tuna fractions was investigated by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods (in wastes and edible parts), and a preliminary characterization of potential bioactive peptides was achieved. Automated sample preparation allowed speeding up the analytical workflow, while allowing for highly sensitive and selective lipid characterization. The ω3 fatty acid content was found higher in waste products compared to the muscle, in terms of fatty acids as well as complex lipids. As for peptides, extraction by isoelectric solubilization/precipitation was performed, followed by enzymatic digestion and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Furthermore, the use of bioinformatics tools highlighted the presence of potential antimicrobial peptides in the samples investigated.

Abstract
Background Aging and mortality of patients on waiting lists for kidney transplantation have increased, as a result of the shortage of organs available all over the world. Living donor grafts represent a significant source to maintain the donor pool, and resorting successfully to allografts with arterial disease has become a necessity. The incidence of renal artery fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) in potential living renal donors is reported to be 2–6%, and up to 4% of them present concurrent extra-renal involvement. Case presentation We present a case of renal transplantation using a kidney from a living donor with monolateral FMD. Resection of the affected arterial segment and its subsequent replacement with a cryopreserved iliac artery graft from a deceased donor were performed. No intraoperative nor post-operative complications were reported. The allograft function promptly resumed, with satisfying creatinine clearance, and adequate patency of the vascular anastomoses was detected by Doppler ultrasounds. Conclusion Literature lacks clear guidelines on the eligibility of potential living renal donors with asymptomatic FMD. Preliminary assessment of the FMD living donor should always rule out any extra-renal involvement. Whenever possible, resection and reconstruction of the affected arterial segment should be taken into consideration as this condition may progress after implantation.

Abstract
The increasing number of synthetic molecules constantly introduced into the illicit drug market poses a great demand in terms of separation and identification power of the analytical tools. Therefore, forensic laboratories are challenged to develop multiple analytical techniques, allowing for the reliable analysis of illicit drugs. This goal is accomplished by means of spectroscopy measurements, usually after a separation step, consisting of liquid (LC) or gas (GC) chromatography. Within the wide range of hyphenated techniques, the coupling of GC to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) provides a powerful identification tool, also allowing discriminating between isobars and isomers. In this research, the effectiveness of GC-FTIR is demonstrated, in achieving structure elucidation of 1-pentyl-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole, commonly known as JWH-018, a synthetic cannabinoid identified as component of illegal “incense blends.” Moreover, solid deposition FTIR enabled for boosting the sensitivity of the technique, over conventional flow (light pipe) cells, scaling down the limit of identification to the ng scale. Calibration curves for JWH-018 standard were obtained in the 20–1,000 ng range, and the limit of detection and limit of quantification were assessed as equal to 4.3 and 14.3 ng, respectively. Finally, the proposed methodology has been adopted for the identification of active principles in a real “street” sample seized by the law enforcement, consisting of an herbal matrix containing four different synthetic cannabinoids belonging to the JWH class. The correct identification of such compounds, with a high degree of chemical similarity, demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed approach for reliable analysis of complex mixtures of illicit drugs, as viable alternative to widespread mass spectrometry-based approaches.

Abstract
The transmission of cancer from a donor organ is a rare event but has important consequences. Aim of this systematic review was to summarize all the published evidence on cancer transmission in kidney recipients. We reviewed published case reports and series describing the outcome of recipients with donor-transmitted cancer until August 2019. A total of 128 papers were included, representing 234 recipients. The most common transmitted cancers were lymphoma (n = 48, 20.5%), renal cancer (42, 17.9%), melanoma (40, 17.1%), non-small cell lung cancer (n = 13, 5.6%), neuroendocrine cancers comprising small cell lung cancer (n = 11, 4.7%) and choriocarcinoma (n = 10, 4.3%). There was a relative lack of glioblastoma and gastrointestinal cancers with only 6 and 5 cases, respectively. Melanoma and lung cancer had the worst prognosis, with 5-years overall survival of 43% and 19%, respectively; while renal cell cancer and lymphomas had a favorable prognosis with 5-years overall survival of 93 and 63%, respectively. Metastasis of cancer outside the graft was the most important adverse prognostic factor. Overall reporting was good, but information on donors' cause of death and investigations at procurement was often lacking. Epidemiology of transmitted cancer has evolved, thanks to screening with imaging and blood tests, as choriocarcinoma transmission have almost abolished, while melanoma and lymphoma are still difficult to detect and prevent.

Abstract
Abstract
18F-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) has been used to evaluate aortic stenosis. It is know that its uptake is related with microcalcification. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between 18F-NaF uptake by the aortic valve and by the main arterial vessels and cardiovascular risk.
Twenty-five hypertensive patients without known cardiovascular disease or aortic stenosis underwent PET-CT with 18F-NaF. Cardiovascular risk was assessed through the ASCVD risk calculator. The patients had a mean age of 64.0±8.6 years and 56% were males. The mean ASCVD risk was of 28.8±19.0 (IQR: 10–48.5). The uptake of 18F-NaF assessed through the corrected uptake per lesion (CUL = max SUV – mean blood-pool SUV) was of 0.49±0.14 (IQR: 0.44–0.57) and the mean uptake in the aortic, coronary and carotid territories was of 0.66±0.21 (IQR: 0.53 - 0.76).The patients were classified according to the ASCVD: Group A: patients with a risk above the 50thpercentile of the ASCVD risk distribution (50thpercentile=25), 12 patients) and Group B: patients with a risk under or equal to the 50thpercentile of the ASCVD risk distribution, 13 patients.
The uptake of 18F-NaF in the aortic valve (AoV)and in the main vascular territories (VT) were evaluated in both groups: A vs B: AoV CUL = 0.57±0.09 vs 0. 42±0.14, p=0.005; VT= 0.78±0.16 vs 0.54±0.20, p=0.003. We also evaluate the relation between AoV uptake and VT uptake and they were significantly related (r=0.69, p=0.0001).
In conclusion on this study microcalcification of the aortic valve and in the main vessels, evaluated through 18F-NaF uptake, were related between them and with cardiovascular risk reinforcing the importance of cardiovascular risk prevention in aortic valve degeneration and vascular atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Rind color of some high-value PDO cheeses is related to the presence of carotenoids, but little is known about the structure of the pigmented compounds and their origin. Our objective was to describe the carotenoids extracted from the rind of a French cheese, Fourme de Montbrison, and to compare them with the pigments produced by a bacterial strain used as an adjunct culture in the cheese ripening process. Eleven carotenoids were detected in the cheese rinds or in the biomass of Brevibacterium linens. Most of the carotenoids from the rinds belonged to the aryl (aromatic) carotenoid family, including hydroxylated and non-hydroxylated isorenieratene. Chlorobactene, a carotenoid rarely found in food products, was also detected. Agelaxanthin A was identified in the cheese rinds as well as in the B. linens biomass. Occurrence of this compound was previously described in only one scientific publication, where it was isolated from the sponge Agela schmidtii.

Abstract
In this work the morphologic features of Pele’s hair formed during three different eruptions of Kilauea volcano have been investigated: fountaining from Kilauea Iki’s 1959 Episode 1, weak explosive activity from Halemaumau lava lake and littoral explosions at Waikupanaha (2009). Morphological studies were performed by optical, stereo- and scanning electron microscopy. For the first time 3D image analysis was carried out by synchrotron radiation X-ray computed microtomography, which allowed a high-resolution 3D reconstruction of the internal structure of each Pele’s hair, highlighting several differences in terms of number density, elongation and shape of the vesicles between the samples from the three eruptions. We identified three main parameters determining these differences: initial size of the magma droplet, ejection velocity and magma viscosity. Pele’s hair erupted during the Kilauea Iki’s fountaining shows the highest thickness and the least elongated shape of the vesicles, though it is related to fast ejection of a low viscosity magma. We therefore suggest that the size of magma droplets is the main parameter influencing the morphology and inner textures of the Pele’s hair. The comparison with Pele’s hair of similar eruptions elsewhere demonstrates that there is no univocal correspondence between eruptive style and Pele’s hair texture.

Abstract
Offline multidimensional supercritical fluid chromatography combined with reversed-phase liquid chromatography was employed for the carotenoid and chlorophyll characterization in different sweet bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) for the first time. The first dimension consisted of an Acquity HSS C18 SB (100 × 3 mm id, 1.8 μm particles) column operated with a supercritical mobile phase in an ultra-performance convergence chromatography system, whereas the second dimension was performed in reversed-phase mode with a C30 (250 × 4.6 mm id, 3.0 μm particles) stationary phase combined with photodiode array and mass spectrometry detection. This approach allowed the determination of 115 different compounds belonging to chlorophylls, free xanthophylls, free carotenes, xanthophyll monoesters, and xanthophyll diesters, and proved to be a significant improvement in the pigments determination compared to the conventional one-dimensional liquid chromatography approach so far applied to the carotenoid analysis in the studied species. Moreover, the present study also aimed to investigate and to compare the carotenoid stability and composition in overripe yellow and red bell peppers collected directly from the plant, thus also evaluating whether biochemical changes are linked to carotenoid degradation in the nonclimacteric investigated fruits, for the first time.

Abstract
Cordia verbenacea D.C. (Boraginaceae, Varronia curassavica Jacq. synonym) is a medicinal plant, native from Brazil, especially the leaves are used in folk medicine. The aim of this study was to extend the characterization of the volatile fraction of the essential oil obtained from this plant, by using GC-FID, GC-MS, and chiral GC. Moreover, to further clarify the composition of the volatile fraction, preparative multidimensional-GC (prep-MDGC) was used to collect unknown compounds, followed by NMR characterization. Specifically, the chemical characterization, both qualitative and quantitative, of the volatile fraction of the essential oil obtained from Cordia verbenacea cultivated in the Minas Gerais area (central area of Brazil) was investigated for the first time. The principal components from a quantitative point of view were α-pinene (25.32%; 24.48g/100g) and α-santalene (17.90%; 17.30g/100g), belonging to the terpenes family. Chiral-GC data are reported for the enantiomeric distribution of 7 different components. Last, to obtain the complete characterization of the essential oil constituents, prep-MDGC analysis was used to attain the isolation of two compounds, not present in the principal MS databases, which were unambiguously identified by NMR investigation as (E)-α-santalal and (E)-α-bergamotenal, reported for the first time in Cordia verbenacea essential oil.

Abstract
The aging of the on-dialysis population raises the issue of whether to propose elderly patients for kidney transplantation and how to manage their immunosuppression. This study aimed to analyze the outcome of kidney transplantation on an Italian series of elderly recipients. We included in this retrospective study all patients over 60 years, receiving a deceased-donor kidney transplantation from January 2004 to December 2014 in two north Italian Centers. We analyzed the correlation of recipient age with graft's and patient's survival, delayed graft function, acute cellular rejection (ACR), surgical complications, infections, and glomerular filtration rate. Four hundred and fifty-two patients with a median age of 65 years were included in the study. One-, 3-, and 5-year patient's and graft's survival were, respectively, of 98.7%, 93%, 89% and 94.4%, 87.9%, 81.4%. The increasing recipient age was an independent risk factor only for the patient's (P=.008) and graft's survival (P=.002). ACR and neoplasia were also associated to a worse graft survival. The reduced graft survival in elderly kidney recipients seems to be related more to the increasing recipient's age than to the donor's features. In this population, the optimization of organ allocation and immunosuppression may be the key factors to endorse improvements.

Abstract
The enhanced sample collection capability of a heart-cutting three-dimensional GC-prep system is reported. In its original configuration, a highly pure component can be usually collected after the last (3D) column outlet by means of a dedicated preparative station. The latter is located after the last chromatographic column, and this poses the requirement for multiple heart cuts even for those components showing satisfactory degree of purity after the first (or second) separation dimension. The feasibility to collect pure components after each chromatographic dimension is here described, employing a three-dimension MDGC system equipped with high-temperature valves, located inside the first and second GC ovens, with the aim to improve the productivity of the collection procedure. In addition to a commercial preparative collector located at the 3D outlet, two laboratory-made collection systems were applied in the first and second dimension, reached by the effluent to be collected trough a high-temperature valve switching the heart-cut fraction between either the detector (FID), or the collector. Highly pure sesquiterpene components were collected, namely: patchouli alcohol after the first column [poly(5% diphenyl/95% dimethylsiloxane)], α-bulnesene after a second column coated with high molecular weight polyethylene glycol, and α-guaiene after an ionic-liquid based column (SLB-IL60), used as the third dimension. Purity levels ranging from 85 to 95% were achieved with an average collection recovery of 90% (n=5). The following average amounts were collected per run: 160μg for α-guaiene, 295μg for α-bulnesene, and 496μg for patchouli alcohol.

Abstract
The task of lipid analysis has always challenged separation scientists, and new techniques in chromatography were often developed for the separation of lipids; however, no single technique or methodology is yet capable of affording a comprehensive screening of all lipid species and classes. This review acquaints the role of supercritical fluid chromatography within the field of lipid analysis, from the early developed capillary separations based on pure CO2 , to the most recent techniques employing packed columns under subcritical conditions, including the niche multidimensional techniques using supercritical fluids in at least one of the separation dimensions. A short history of supercritical fluid chromatography will be introduced first, from its early popularity in the late 1980s, to the sudden fall and oblivion until the last decade, experiencing a regain of interest within the chromatographic community. Afterwards, the subject of lipid nomenclature and classification will be briefly dealt with, before discussing the main applications of supercritical fluid chromatography for food analysis, according to the specific class of lipids.

Abstract
Bauhinia forficata Link. is utilised as an antidiabetic in Brazilian folk-medicine; furthermore, its antioxidant properties suggest a potential usefulness in the prevention of diabetes complications associated with oxidative stress. The contribution of a flavonoid-rich fraction (FRF), HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS characterised, to the antioxidant and cytotoxic properties of B. forficata hydro-alcoholic leaves extract was evaluated for the first time. Both extract and FRF showed radical-scavenging activity and reducing power with a strong relationship with the flavonoid content found; hence, flavonoids are mainly responsible for the primary antioxidant activity of B. forficata extract. The extract significantly decreased FO-1 cell viability at the higher concentrations. FRF did not exert any effect; thus, flavonoids do not appear to be responsible for the cytotoxicity of the extract. The extract resulted virtually non-toxic against both Artemia salina and normal human lymphocytes, demonstrating potential selectivity in inhibiting cancer cell growth. Finally, no antimicrobial activity was observed against the bacteria and yeasts tested.

Abstract
Background: Rhamnus alaternus (Rhamnaceae) L. has been traditionally used for treatment of many diseases. Objective: In this study, we determined the antioxidant/free radical scavenger properties, the flavonoid profile and the cytotoxicity of aqueous and methanolic extracts obtained by maceration from Algerian R. alaternus bark, like also of aqueous extract prepared by decoction according to the traditional method. This to estimate the usefulness of the drug traditional preparation and compare it with those made in the laboratory. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using five different redox-based assays, all involving one redox reaction with the oxidant. High-performance liquid chromatography/diode array detection/electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis was used to identify and quantify the flavonoids content. Cytotoxicity on human monocytic leukemia cells (U937) was also carried out. Results: All the extracts tested showed a good antioxidant/free radical scavenger activity and a similar flavonoid fingerprint. However, the methanolic one presented the best antioxidant activity that can be due to the highest flavonoid amount and significantly reduced the proliferation of leukemia cells. The results confirm that the extract prepared by decoction contains efficient antioxidant compounds and this justifies in part the therapeutic and preventive usefulness. Moreover, the methanolic extract exerted excellent cytotoxicity on U937 that could be attributed to kaempferol and rhamnocitrin glycosides.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to investigate the polyphenolic profile of a pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) extract from Algeria and evaluate its biological activity. The total polyphenol content of the extract was determined as 1.373 mg of gallic acid equivalents (±0.0046), whereas the flavonoids were determined as 0.098 mg of quercetin (±0.0015). The determination of the complete polyphenolic profile of the extract was achieved by liquid chromatography with an RP-amide column in combination with photodiode array and mass spectrometry detection through an electrospray ionization interface. A total of 18 compounds were identified, of which five were reported for the first time in the sample tested. Quercetin rhamnoside was the most abundant compound (82.6 μg/g of fresh pepper) followed by quercetin glucoside (19.86 μg/g). The antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effects were also determined. For the antimicrobial tests assessed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, kaempferol showed the strongest inhibitory effect followed by quercetin and caffeic acids. In the study of the cytotoxicity of the extract, the cancer cells (U937) were more affected than the normal cells (peripheral blood mononucleated cells), with more than 62% inhibition at the highest concentration.

Abstract
This study reports on a large series of 200 dual kidney transplantations (DKTs) from expanded criteria donors (ECDs) and proposes specific ways to optimize outcomes. Data concerning 200 DKTs performed in the last 14 yr were retrospectively analyzed. Kidneys from high-risk ECD were allocated for use in DKTs on an old-for-old basis after histological assessment. Different surgical techniques and immunosuppressant regimens were used over time, and the outcomes are discussed. Donors and recipients were a median 73 (70-77) and a 62 (58-67) yr old, respectively. Delayed graft function occurred in 31.5% of cases, and acute rejection in 13.5%. Patient and graft survival at five yr were 90.4% and 85.8%, respectively. Unilateral kidney placement was preferred for 75% of patients, and was associated with a low rate of surgical complications. Our current standard therapy comprising low-dose calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) associated with mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors (mTOR) and steroids appears to offer the best risk/benefit profile for elderly patients undergoing DKT. In our experience, outcomes after DKT can be improved by: (i) kidney clinical-histological assessment; (ii) unilateral kidney placement; (iii) minimal use of CNI associated with mTOR.

Abstract
The review, as can be deduced from the title, focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects of the use of mass spectrometry as a third, added dimension to a comprehensive LC (LC × LC) system, generating the most powerful analytical tool today for non-volatile analytes. The first part deals with the technical requirements for linkage of an LC × LC system to an MS one, including the choice of the mobile phase (buffer and salts), flow rate (splitting), type of ionization (interface); advantages and disadvantages of off-line and on-line methods are discussed, as well. A discussion of the various aspects of instrumentation is provided, both from a chromatographic and mass spectrometry standpoint, with particular emphasis directed to the choice of column sets, spatial resolution, mass resolving power, mass accuracy, and tandem-MS capabilities. The extent to which mass spectrometry may be of aid in unraveling column-outlet multicompound bands is highlighted, along with its effectiveness as a chromatographic detector of excellent sensitivity, universality yet with potential in terms of selectivity and amenability to quantitative analysis over a wide dynamic range. The following section of the review contains significant applications of comprehensive two-dimensional LC coupled to MS in different areas of research, with details on interfaces, column stationary phases, modulation and MS parameters. It is not the intention of the authors to provide a comprehensive description of the techniques, but merely to discuss only those aspects which are essential for successful applications of the LC-MS combination. The reader will be acquainted with the enormous potential of this hyphenated technique, and the factors and instrumental developments that have concurred to make it emerge to a central role in specialized fields, such as proteomics.

Abstract
The research of new tyrosinase inhibitors is currently important for the development of skin whitening agents; particularly, birch leaves extracts are included in many skin cosmetic products. In this study, the potential ability of Betula pendula leaves ethanolic extract (BE) was evaluated on mushroom tyrosinase activity. Results showed that BE was capable to inhibit dose-dependently l-DOPA oxidation catalyzed by tyrosinase. The inhibition kinetics, analyzed by Lineweaver-Burk plots, showed a noncompetitive inhibition of BE towards the enzyme, using l-DOPA as substrate. The inhibitory mechanism of BE as studied by spectrophotometric analysis, demonstrated its ability to chelate copper ion in the active site of tyrosinase. In addition, BE exhibited Fe(2+)-chelating ability (IC(50)=614.12±2.14 μg/mL), reducing power and radical-scavenging properties (IC(50)=137.22±1.98 μg/mL). These results suggest the usefulness of birch leaves extracts in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for their skin-whitening and antioxidant effects. Determination of the polyphenolic compounds in BE extracts was afterward achieved by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (PDA) and mass spectrometry (MS) detection. A total of 25 compounds were positively identified, through the complementary analytical information, and are reported in such a matrix for the first time. Knowledge on the qualitative composition and contents of these natural sources in fact represents mandatory information, for rational consumption and correlation of the beneficial effects to the specific amounts.

Abstract
A non-aqueous reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography method was developed, and optimized for triacylglycerol analysis in a Brevoortia tyrannus (menhaden) oil sample. Four columns were serially coupled to tackle such a task, for a total length of 60 cm of shell-packed stationary phase, and operated under ultra high pressure conditions. As detection, positive-ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry was used to attain identification of the analyzed sample components. A number of 137 triacylglycerols containing up to 19 fatty acids, with 14-22 carbon atom alkyl chain length and 0-6 double bonds, were positively identified in the complex lipidic sample. This is the first work that reports an extensive characterization of the triacylglycerol fraction of menhaden oil.
