Development of microbial fuel cell integrated constructed wetland (CMFC) for removal of paracetamol and diclofenac in hospital wastewater

Hospital wastewater management has become a significant concern across the globe due to the presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and other toxic substances, which can potentially disrupt ecosystems. The presence of recalcitrant PhACs in hospital wastewater increases the difficulty level for conventional wastewater treatment systems. Furthermore, incorporating advanced oxidation-based treatment systems increase capital and operation costs. To reduce treatment costs, low-cost innovative technology, i.e., composite constructed wetland and microbial fuel cell system (CMFC), has been developed for higher treatment efficiency of PhACs in hospital wastewater along with simultaneous bioelectricity generation as an additional outcome. In this study, influencing operating parameters, such as initial chemical oxygen demand (COD), electrode spacing, and substrate-to-water-depth ratio, were optimized for two plant species: water hyacinth (WH) and duckweed (DW). The optimized systems were run in batch and continuous mode for WH-CMFC and DW-CMFC to treat synthetic hospital wastewater with paracetamol and diclofenac, and the bioelectricity generation was monitored. DW-CMFC system depicted better treatment efficiency and voltage generation as compared to WH-CMFC. In continuous mode, the DW-CMFC system exhibited a removal of 95.3% COD, 97.1% paracetamol, and 87.5% diclofenac. WH-CMFC and DW-CMFC achieved power densities of around 21.26 mW/m2 and 42.93 mW/m2, respectively. The fate of PhACs during and after treatment and toxicity analysis of the transformation products formed were also carried out. Higher bio-electricity generation and efficient wastewater treatment of the DW-CMFC make it a sustainable option for hospital wastewater management.

A comprehensive appraisal on status and management of remediation of DBPs by TiO2 based-photocatalysts: Insights of technology, performance and energy efficiency

Disinfection has been acknowledged as an inevitable technique in water treatment. However, an inadvertent consequence of generation of carcinogenic and mutagenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) is associated with the reaction of disinfectants and natural organic matter (NOM) present in water. More than 700 DBPs have been identified in drinking water. The conventional processes carried out in WTPs do not optimally ensure NOM elimination, which evokes the need for the incorporation of other processes. In this context, several physicochemical and advanced oxidation processes (AOP), such as adsorption, membrane techniques, photocatalysis, etc., have been studied for the removal of NOM from water. Photocatalysis using semiconductors has been one of the most proficient technologies, which utilizes light energy for the degradation of recalcitrant organics. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive appraisal on the performance of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) based photocatalysts in the remediation of DBPs concerning the efficacy and energy requirements of the system. Furthermore, the effect of process parameters, such as pH, catalyst dose, light intensity, etc. on the efficacy of the process was also studied. It was observed that conventional P25-TiO₂ powders were efficient in the degradation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (up to 90%). However, low photocatalytic activity under visible light activation is one of its significant downsides. Several modifications on the catalyst surface in many studies exhibited advantages, such as high humic acid (HA) degradation under visible light. Furthermore, doped TiO₂ catalysts have shown high total organic carbon (TOC) degradation. The photocatalytic systems have achieved a better decrease in trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) when compared to haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP). The energy requirements of the photocatalytic systems are determined by electrical energy per order (EE/O), which has been observed to be lesser for doped TiO₂ and engineered TiO₂ catalysts when compared with P25-TiO₂ powders. Carbon, iron, silver, etc., based catalysts can be a promising alternative to TiO₂-based photocatalysts for the degradation of NOM, although further research is required in this direction. The present review provides critical highlights on the uses, opportunities, and challenges of TiO₂-based photocatalytic techniques for the management of DBPs and their precursors pertaining to an emerging area of water treatment.

Application of a new baffled horizontal flow constructed wetland-filter unit (BHFCW-FU) for treatment and reuse of petrochemical industry wastewater

The shortage of water resources and generation of large quantum of wastewater has posed a significant concern to the environment and public health. Recent research on wastewater treatment has started to focus on reusing wastewater for different activities to reduce the stress on natural water resources. Constructed wetland (CWs) is a low-cost wastewater treatment option. However, some drawbacks include large areal requirements and the need for tertiary treatment units for reusable effluent. In this study, a novel composite baffled horizontal flow CW filter unit (BHFCW-FU) was developed to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional CW. The BHFCW-FU planted with Chrysopogon zizanioides provided a nine times longer flow path, and the adjoined variable depth dual media filter reduced the total area requirement and served as a polishing unit. On average, the BHFCW-FU with horizontal sub-surface flow regime could efficiently remove around 93.93%, 87.20%, and 66.25% of turbidity, phenol, and COD, respectively, from real petrochemical wastewater (initial turbidity: 29.6 NTU, phenol: 4.52 mg/L, and COD: 381 mg/L) and rendered the effluent quality reusable for irrigation, industrial, and other environmental purposes. In synthetic wastewater (initial turbidity: 754 NTU, phenol: 10.87 mg/L, and COD: 1691 mg/L), the removal efficiency of turbidity, phenol, and COD were 99.50%, 93.73%, and 87.05%, respectively. In-depth substrate characterization was done to study the removal mechanism. The developed BHFCW-FU required less space and maintenance, provided reusable effluent, and overcame the drawbacks of conventional CWs. Hence, it may show immense potential as an effective wastewater treatment.

A review on the treatment of septage and faecal sludge management: A special emphasis on constructed wetlands

The global concern of the pollution of freshwater resources is associated with faecal sludge (FS) disposal, which is an inevitable component of onsite wastewater management mostly in developing countries. The difficulties with its treatment facilities lies in its higher organic content and low dewaterability of various available treatment systems. Moreover, the higher variability in characteristics and quantity of FS generated at different locations creates hindrances in designing the treatment system. Among the several treatment options, the constructed wetlands (CW) are an organic/green approach towards sanitation of FS with low cost and higher efficiency. The present study is an in-depth literature review on the quality and quantity of FS and septage (stabilized FS) in different regions attributed to the wide variability of its characteristics. This paper highlights the treatment of FS in different systems with a special emphasis on CW systems. Different mechanisms and factors affecting the FS treatment efficacy in CW, such as DO/aeration, macrophytes, substrate, CW configuration, and other environmental parameters, have been studied meticulously. The cost analysis revealed CW to be an economic system, and it can enable hybridization with other technologies to develop a complete treatment system with pronounced efficiencies. Several process modifications, such as augmentation with aeration, recirculation, micro-organisms, and earthworms, can enhance the treatment efficacies of CWs. The present review exhibited that the widely used plant species is Phragmites, and the optimum solid loading rate (SLR) range is 50-250 kg TS/m²/yr. The various factors to construct an optimized CW system for FS treatment were attempted, which may bolster the necessary guidelines for field-scale applications.

Modeling defluoridation of real-life groundwater by a green adsorbent aluminum/olivine composite: Isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics and novel framework based on artificial neural network and support vector machine

The kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamics of adsorptive removal of fluoride from the real-life groundwater was evaluated to assess the applicability of a green adsorbent, aluminum/olivine composite (AOC). The isotherm and kinetics were demonstrated by the Freundlich and Elovich model indicating significant surface heterogeneity of AOC in favouring the fluoride sorption. The fluoride removal efficiency of AOC was achieved as 87.5% after 240 min of contact time. The diffusion kinetic model exhibited that both the intra-particle and film diffusion together control the rate-limiting step of fluoride adsorption. A negative value of ΔG⁰ (-19.919 kJ/mol) at 303 K confirmed the spontaneous adsorption reaction of fluoride, and its endothermic nature was supported by the negative value of ΔH⁰ (39.504 kJ/mol). A novel framework for a predictive model by artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) considering the real and synthetic fluoride-containing water was developed to assess the efficiency of adsorbent under different scenarios. ANN model was observed to be statistically significant (RMSE: 1.0955 and R²: 0.9982) and the proposed method may be instrumental in a similar area for benchmarking the synthetic and real-life samples. The low desorption potential of the spent adsorbent exhibited safe disposal of sludge and the secondary-pollutant-free treated water by the efficient and green adsorbent AOC enhanced the field-scale applicability of the green technology.

Hydraulic performance benchmarking for effective management of water distribution networks: An innovative composite index-based approach

Hydraulic performance assessment and benchmarking of water distribution networks (WDNs) impose a major challenge to water utilities worldwide. Presently, benchmarking strategies for WDNs are not fully developed, especially for analyzing intermittent systems commonly encountered in non-developed nations. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an index-based benchmarking strategy for WDNs, comparing their actual hydraulic performance and expected serviceability. A robust Hydraulic Performance Index (HPI) is developed as a global metric to account for the combined impact of multiple hydraulic outputs, concerning their benchmark values. The applicability of this index is verified on a numerical benchmark network, and its usefulness is demonstrated on a real-world intermittent WDN located in Kolkata (India) by coupling the HPI-based framework with hydraulic models using the EPANET-MATLAB programmer's toolkit. A scenario-based analysis is conducted using extended-period simulation to obtain the HPI for diverse service levels and leakage conditions of the WDN models. The HPI is designed to effectively capture the localized pressure reduction during peak flow, prioritize hydraulic outputs based on regional constraints, and penalize systems with unsustainably high hydraulic output. The developed strategy is also effective in performance benchmarking of WDNs of different nations with diverse serviceability and threshold parameters on a common platform. Finally, the practical efficacy and generalizability of the HPI-based results in the context of case-specific performance management of WDNs, along with limitations, recommendations and future perspectives are elucidated upon.

Predicting the trend and utility of different photocatalysts for degradation of pharmaceutically active compounds: A special emphasis on photocatalytic materials, modifications, and performance comparison

The rapid rise in the healthcare sector has led to an increase in pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in different aqueous bodies. The toxicity of the PhACs and their ability to persist after conventional treatment processes have escalated research in the field of photocatalytic treatment. Although different photocatalysts have been successful in degrading PhACs, their inherent drawbacks have severely limited their application on a large scale. A substantial amount of research has been aimed at overcoming the high cost of the photocatalytic material, low quantum yield, the formation of toxic end products, etc. Hence, to further research in this field, researchers must have a fair idea of the current trends in the application of different photocatalysts. In this article, the trends in the use of various photocatalysts for the removal of different PhACs have been circumscribed. The performance of different groups of photocatalysts to degrade PhACs from synthetic and real wastewater has been addressed. The drawbacks and advantages of these materials have been compared, and their future in the field of PhACs removal has been predicted using S-curve analysis. Zinc and titanium-based photocatalysts were efficient under UV irradiation, while bismuth and graphene-based materials exhibited exemplary performance in visible light. However, iron-based compounds were found to have the most promising future, which may be because of their magnetic properties, easy availability, low bandgap, etc. Different modification techniques, such as morphology modification, doping, heterojunction formation, etc., have also been discussed. This study may help researchers to clarify the current research status in the field of photocatalytic treatment of PhACs and provide valuable information for future research.

Development of a schwarzite-based moving bed 3D printed water treatment system for nanoplastic remediation

The impact of micro and nanoplastic debris on our aquatic ecosystem is among the most prominent environmental challenges we face today. In addition, nanoplastics create significant concern for environmentalists because of their toxicity and difficulty in separation and removal. Here we report the development of a 3D printed moving bed water filter (M-3DPWF), which can perform as an efficient nanoplastic scavenger. The enhanced separation of the nanoplastics happens due to the creation of a charged filter material that traps the more surface charged nanoparticles selectively. Synthetic contaminated water from polycarbonate waste has been tested with the filter, and enhanced nanoplastic removal has been achieved. The proposed filtration mechanism of surface-charge based water cleaning is further validated using density function theory (semi-empirical) based simulation. The filter has also shown good structural and mechanical stability in both static and dynamic water conditions. The field suitability of the novel treatment system has also been confirmed using water from various sources, such as sea, river, and pond. Our results suggest that the newly developed water filter can be used for the removal of floating nanoparticles in water as a robust advanced treatment system.

A multivariate modeling and experimental realization of photocatalytic system of engineered S-C3N4/ZnO hybrid for ciprofloxacin removal: Influencing factors and degradation pathways

Ciprofloxacin, a pharmaceutically active compound, is present as a micropollutant in wastewater, which cannot be removed by conventional techniques due to its recalcitrant nature. Therefore, in the present study, the photocatalytic degradation of this bio-toxic compound was demonstrated using a three-dimensional sulfur-doped graphitic-carbon nitride/zinc oxide hybrid, with enriched oxygen vacancies. The influence of various water matrices and experimental conditions on the ciprofloxacin degradation was optimized. The hybrid material showed 98.8% and 75.8% degradation efficiency under optimum experimental conditions (i.e., catalyst dose: 1 g/L; pH: 5; initial ciprofloxacin concentration: 20 mg/L; temperature: 27 °C) under ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, respectively. A neural-network-based multivariate approach was used to predict a significant model considering the experimental conditions that showed adequate statistical significance (R²: 0.992 and F-value: 8707.1). The relative significance of the experimental conditions was assessed, suggesting that the initial ciprofloxacin concentration has a more significant effect on the degradation efficiency than the other factors. The rate kinetics and reaction mechanisms for ciprofloxacin degradation were demonstrated, and the driving radicals involved were identified. A higher rate of reaction was found under UV irradiation (0.01702 min^-1) than under visible light (0.00802 min^-1). Superoxide radicals were identified as the main driving radicals, which caused substantial photocatalytic reactions among the hybrid and ciprofloxacin molecules. Microscopic and macroscopic analyses of the used hybrid were conducted, which confirmed the presence of higher defect concentrations, crystallinity, and interlinked stacked structure in the hybrid. Hence, the 3D hybrid can be efficiently used and reused for ciprofloxacin degradation. This advanced photocatalytic system can be widely used to remediate emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment.

A review on hospital wastewater treatment: A special emphasis on occurrence and removal of pharmaceutically active compounds, resistant microorganisms, and SARS-CoV-2

The hospital wastewater imposes a potent threat to the security of human health concerning its high vulnerability towards the outbreak of several diseases. Furthermore, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic demanded a global attention towards monitoring viruses and other infectious pathogens in hospital wastewater and their removal. Apart from that, the presence of various recalcitrant organics, pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), etc. imparts a complex pollution load to water resources and ecosystem. In this review, an insight into the occurrence, persistence and removal of drug-resistant microorganisms and infectious viruses as well as other micro-pollutants have been documented. The performance of various pilot/full-scale studies have been evaluated in terms of removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), PhACs, pathogens, etc. It was found that many biological processes, such as membrane bioreactor, activated sludge process, constructed wetlands, etc. provided more than 80% removal of BOD, COD, TSS, etc. However, the removal of several recalcitrant organic pollutants are less responsive to those processes and demands the application of tertiary treatments, such as adsorption, ozone treatment, UV treatment, etc. Antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, viruses were found to be persistent even after the treatment of hospital wastewater, and high dose of chlorination or UV treatment was required to inactivate them. This article circumscribes the various emerging technologies, which have been used to treat PhACs and pathogens. The present review also emphasized the global concern of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in hospital wastewater and its removal by the existing treatment facilities.

Effect of coexisting ions on adsorptive removal of arsenate by Mg-Fe-(CO3) LDH: multi-component adsorption and ANN-based multivariate modeling

The adsorptive removal of a pollutant from water is significantly affected by the presence of coexisting ions with various concentrations. Here, we have studied adsorption of arsenate [As(V)] by calcined Mg-Fe-(CO₃)-LDH in the presence of different cations (Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, and Fe³⁺) and anions (CO₃^2‒, Cl^‒, PO₄^3‒, SO₄^2‒, and NO₃^‒) with their different concentrations to simulate the field condition. The experimental results indicated that Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺_, and Fe³⁺ have a synergistic effect on removal efficiency of As(V), whereas PO₄^3‒ and CO₃^2‒ ions have a significant antagonistic impact. Overall, the order of inhibiting effect of coexisting anions on adsorption of As(V) was arrived as NO₃^-˂Cl^-<SO₄^2-<CO₃^2-<PO₄^3-. Among them, competitive adsorption of phosphate with arsenic at different initial phosphate concentrations was found to be responsive to formulate a binary adsorption system. We have also developed a modified non-competitive Langmuir and Langmuir-Freundlich models; however, the modified competitive Langmuir model was arrived to be the most adequate model for this binary system. An Artificial Neural Network based multivariate prediction model was developed, delineating the impact of coexisting ions on the adsorption system. The proposed method may appropriately demonstrate the overall system and exhibited a significantly adequate prediction model with high R², high F-value, and low error values.

A review on performance of constructed wetlands in tropical and cold climate: Insights of mechanism, role of influencing factors, and system modification in low temperature

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are one of the most promising and sustainable alternatives for wastewater treatment that are being successfully implemented in several countries, especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The predominant mechanisms of removal of contaminants in CWs are microbial degradation, phytodegradation, phytoextraction, filtration, sedimentation, and adsorption, etc. Vertical flow subsurface CWs and hybrid CWs demonstrated promising results in terms of TN, BOD, and COD removal, while horizontal flow subsurface CWs were proficient in removal of TP. The performance of the CWs depends upon a various factors, such as hydraulic loading rate, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, etc. Among these, low temperature had the most antagonistic effect on the performance of the CWs because freezing ambient temperature lead to ice formation, hydraulic imperfections, malfunctioning of biotic and abiotic components, etc. Over the past three decades, thousands of studies have been conducted involving treatment of wastewater using CWs, among which only few have addressed the issues and concerns of cold climate representing a significant research gap in this field. Furthermore, the performance of CWs in terms of TN, TP, and COD removal was significantly lower in cold climates than that in tropical and sub-tropical climates. In order to find suitable remedies to overcome the challenges faced in cold climate various modifications, such as incorporating greenhouse structure, providing insulating materials, bio-augmentation, identification of suitable macrophytes, etc., in around 20 different scenarios have been studied. Greenhouse construction led to 20% increase in removal of TN and COD, while plant collocation accounted for up to 18% increase in the removal of COD. Artificial aeration, insulation and bio-augmentation also enhanced the performance of the CWs in low temperatures.

A review on treatment of petroleum refinery and petrochemical plant wastewater: A special emphasis on constructed wetlands

Petroleum refinery and petrochemical plants (PRPP) are one of the major contributors to toxic and recalcitrant organic polluted water, which has become a significant concern in the field of environmental engineering. Several contaminants of PRPP wastewater are genotoxic, phytotoxic, and carcinogenic, thereby imposing detrimental effects on the environment. Many biological processes were able to achieve chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal ranging from 60% to 90%, and their retention time usually ranged from 10 to 100 days. These methods were not efficient in removing the petroleum hydrocarbons present in PRPP wastewater and produced a significant amount of oily sludge. Advanced oxidation processes achieved the same COD removal efficiency in a few hours and were able to break down recalcitrant organic compounds. However, the associated high cost is a significant drawback concerning PRPP wastewater treatment. In this context, constructed wetlands (CWs) could effectively remove the recalcitrant organic fraction of the wastewater because of the various inherent mechanisms involved, such as phytodegradation, rhizofiltration, microbial degradation, sorption, etc. In this review, we found that CWs were efficient in handling large quantities of high strength PRPP wastewater exhibiting average COD removal of around 80%. Horizontal subsurface flow CWs exhibited better performance than the free surface and floating CWs. These systems could also effectively remove heavy oil and recalcitrant organic compounds, with an average removal efficiency exceeding 80% and 90%, respectively. Furthermore, modifications by varying the aeration system, purposeful hybridization, and identifying the suitable substrate led to the enhanced performance of the systems.

Remediation of carcinogenic arsenic by pyroaurite-based green adsorbent: isotherm, kinetic, mechanistic study, and applicability in real-life groundwater

The removal of the harmful carcinogen arsenic from drinking water by a green technology is a major concern in the field of environmental engineering. The sorptive profile of arsenic remediation by calcined Mg-Fe-layered double hydroxide, fabricated by a one-pot synthesis technique, was investigated to delineate its applicability in real-life water. The physicochemical properties of adsorbent, as demonstrated from spectroscopy and microscopy, which described the existence of amorphous material with significant surface roughness possess selectivity towards arsenic. The isotherm and kinetic along with thermodynamic modeling exhibited the occurrence of spontaneous (ΔG⁰ value = - 8.084 kJ/mol to - 10.942 kJ/mol), endothermic (ΔH⁰ value = 12.135 kJ/mol), and physisorption reactions (E_ad = 4.103-5.832 kJ/mol, E_a = 11.546 kJ/mol, S* = 0.0005 << 1, and ΔH_x = 9.23-16.29 kJ/mol) with high uptake rate and adsorption potential of adsorbent. The isotherm and kinetics were demonstrated by Temkin (R² = 0.944-0.969) and Elovich (R² = 0.996-0.998) models, respectively, with high statistical significance. The intraparticle diffusion model which established the rate-limiting step is the combination of both film and pore diffusions. The applicability of layered double hydroxide (LDH) material in the real-life water was confirmed by isotherm and kinetic modeling along with the regeneration/reuse potential. The adsorptive removal of arsenic by the LDH material exhibited to be a promising technique without creating any secondary hazard.

Photo-induced degradation of bio-toxic Ciprofloxacin using the porous 3D hybrid architecture of an atomically thin sulfur-doped g-C3N4/ZnO nanosheet

Ciprofloxacin is a pharmaceutically active compound which belongs to a class of micropollutants that cannot be removed using conventional water treatment systems. In this study, photocatalytic degradation using materials with high surface area and active sites was proposed to remove such contaminants. We demonstrated an easily scalable and simple synthesis route to prepare a 3D porous sulfur-doped g-C₃N₄/ZnO hybrid material, and the preparation process parameters were optimized using response surface methodology targeting Ciprofloxacin degradation. The hybrid material removed up to 98% of the bio-toxic Ciprofloxacin from synthetic water. The porous, defect engineered, thermally stable, and chemically interconnected hybrid material presented an 18 and 38% improved degradation efficiency compared to ZnO and sulfur-doped g-C₃N₄ (or S-C₃N₄), respectively. Based on our experimental results, an empirical relation correlating synthesis process parameters and degradation efficiency was developed using face-centered central composite design (FCCD) and response surface methodology (RSM). The current model can be used to design catalytic materials for removing bio-toxic and other micropollutants from water.

Modeling and analysis of adsorptive removal of arsenite by Mg-Fe-(CO3) layer double hydroxide with its application in real-life groundwater

The kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic modeling of the adsorption of arsenite by layered double hydroxide have been performed to analyze the feasibility, efficacy and mechanism of the system. The fast uptake was observed during the initial phase of the process, which reached equilibrium at 240 min following Elovich model. The diffusion kinetic model exhibited that the rate-limiting step of adsorption was controlled by film diffusion as well as intraparticle diffusion. The isotherm modeling revealed the applicability of the Freundlich equation with the K_f values as 8.19-13.99 (mg g^-1)(L mg^-1)^1/n at 283-323 K showing the increasing trend of adsorption capacity, which was further confirmed by the positive value of ΔH⁰ (9.49 kJ mol^-1) demonstrating the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The spontaneous nature of the adsorption reaction was established by the negative values of ΔG⁰. Application of the calcined Mg-Fe-LDH adsorbent for the removal of arsenic from real arsenic contaminated groundwater was also successfully performed. The effect of process parameters of the adsorption system was modeled by an artificial neural network (ANN) for adsorption capacity and removal efficiency. The optimized model exhibited high R², F-value and low values of error functions, establishing the significant applicability of the ANN model.
