Néel Skyrmion Bubbles in La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xRuxO3 Multilayers

Ferromagnetic La_0.7Sr_0.3Mn_1-xRu_xO₃ epitaxial multilayers with controlled variation of the Ru/Mn content were synthesized to engineer canted magnetic anisotropy and variable exchange interactions, and to explore the possibility of generating a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The ultimate aim of the multilayer design is to provide the conditions for the formation of domains with nontrivial magnetic topology in an oxide thin film system. Employing magnetic force microscopy and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy in varying perpendicular magnetic fields, magnetic stripe domains separated by Néel-type domain walls as well as Néel skyrmions smaller than 100 nm in diameter were observed. These findings are consistent with micromagnetic modeling, taking into account a sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking and possibly from strain effects in the multilayer system.

Structural Disorder as the Origin of Optical Properties and Spectral Dynamics in Squaraine Nano-Aggregates

In contrast to regular J- and H-aggregates, thin film squaraine aggregates usually have broad absorption spectra containing both J-and H-like features, which are favorable for organic photovoltaics. Despite being successfully applied in organic photovoltaics for years, a clear interpretation of these optical properties by relating them to specific excited states and an underlying aggregate structure has not been made. In this work, by static and transient absorption spectroscopy on aggregated n-butyl anilino squaraines, we provide evidence that both the red- and blue-shifted peaks can be explained by assuming an ensemble of aggregates with intermolecular dipole-dipole resonance interactions and structural disorder deriving from the four different nearest neighbor alignments─in sharp contrast to previous association of the peaks with intermolecular charge-transfer interactions. In our model, the next-nearest neighbor dipole-dipole interactions may be negative or positive, which leads to the occurrence of J- and H-like features in the absorption spectrum. Upon femtosecond pulse excitation of the aggregated sample, a transient absorption spectrum deviating from the absorbance spectrum emerges. The deviation finds its origin in the excitation of two-exciton states by the probe pulse. The lifetime of the exciton is confirmed by the band integral dynamics, featuring a single-exponential decay with a lifetime of 205 ps. Our results disclose the aggregated structure and the origin of red- and blue-shifted peaks and explain the absence of photoluminescence in squaraine thin films. Our findings underline the important role of structural disorder of molecular aggregates for photovoltaic applications.

Thermally-induced drift of A-site cations at solid-solid interface in physically paired lead halide perovskites

The promise of hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells rests on their exceptional power conversion efficiency routinely exceeding 25% in laboratory scale devices. While the migration of halide ions in perovskite thin films has been extensively investigated, the understanding of cation diffusion remains elusive. In this study, a thermal migration of A‑site cations at the solid-solid interface, formed by two physically paired MAPbI₃ and FAPbI₃ perovskite thin films casted on FTO, is demonstrated through continuous annealing at comparably low temperature (100 °C). Diffusion of methylammonium (CH₃NH₃⁺, MA⁺) cations into the low‑symmetry yellow δ‑FAPbI₃ phase triggers a transition from the yellow (δ) to black (α) phase evident in the distinctive color change and verified by shifts in absorption bands and X‑ray diffraction patterns. Intermixing of the A‑site cations MA⁺ and FA⁺ (CH(NH₂)₂⁺) occurred for both systems, α‑MAPbI₃/δ‑FAPbI₃ and α‑MAPbI₃/α‑FAPbI₃. The structural and compositional changes in both cases support a thermally activated ion drift unambiguously demonstrated through changes in the absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Moreover, the physical contact annealing (PCA) leads to healing of defects and pinholes in α‑MAPbI₃ thin films, which was correlated to longer recombination lifetimes in mixed MA_xFA_1-xPbI₃ thin films obtained after PCA and probed by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy.

Slowdown of photoexcited spin dynamics in the non-collinear spin-ordered phases in skyrmion host GaV4S8

Formation of magnetic order alters the character of spin excitations, which then affects transport properties. We investigate the photoexcited ultrafast spin dynamics in different magnetic phases in Néel-type skyrmion host GaV₄S₈ with time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments. The coherent spin precession, whose amplitude is enhanced in the skyrmion-lattice phase, shows a signature of phase coexistence across the magnetic phase transitions. The incoherent spin relaxation dynamics slows down by a factor of two in the skyrmion-lattice/cycloid phases, indicating significant decrease in thermal conductivity triggered by a small change of magnetic field. The slow heat diffusion in the skyrmion-lattice/cycloid phases is attributed to the stronger magnon scattering off the domain walls formed in abundance in the skyrmion-lattice/cycloid phase. These results highlight the impact of spatial spin structure on the ultrafast heat transport in spin systems, providing a useful insight for the step toward ultrafast photocontrol of the magnets with novel spin orders.

Skyrmions are a topological magnetic texture that have garnered considerable interest for various technological applications. Here, Sekiguchi et al. investigate the ultrafast optical response of GaV4S6, and find a significant reduction in the thermal conductivity in the skyrmion phase.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of α-RuCl3 - a time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy study

We present time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy on the magnetic Mott-Hubbard-insulating Kitaev spin liquid candidate α-RuCl₃ to investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of its antiferromagnetically ordered zigzag groundstate after photoexcitation. A systematic study of the transient magnetic linear dichroism under different experimental conditions (temperature, external magnetic field, photoexcitation density) gives direct access to the dynamical interplay of charge excitations with the zigzag ordered state on ultrashort time scales. We observe a rather slow initial demagnetization (few to 10s of ps) followed by a long-lived non-thermal antiferromagnetic spin-disordered state (100-1000s of ps), which can be understood in terms of holons and doublons disordering the antiferromagnetic background after photoexcitation. Varying temperature and fluence in the presence of an external magnetic field reveals two distinct photoinduced dynamics associated with the zigzag and quantum paramagnetic disordered phases. The photo-induced non-thermal spin-disordered state shows universal compressed-exponential recovery dynamics related to the growth and propagation of zigzag domains on nanosecond time scales, which is interpreted within the framework of the Fatuzzo-Labrune model for magnetization reversal. The study of nonequilibrium states in strongly correlated materials is a relatively unexplored topic, but our results are expected to be extendable to a large class of Mott-Hubbard insulator materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Non-perturbative terahertz high-harmonic generation in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2

Harmonic generation is a general characteristic of driven nonlinear systems, and serves as an efficient tool for investigating the fundamental principles that govern the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics. Here, we report on terahertz-field driven high-harmonic generation in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 at room temperature. Excited by linearly-polarized multi-cycle terahertz pulses, the third-, fifth-, and seventh-order harmonic generation is very efficient and detected via time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The observed harmonic radiation is further studied as a function of pump-pulse fluence. Their fluence dependence is found to deviate evidently from the expected power-law dependence in the perturbative regime. The observed highly non-perturbative behavior is reproduced based on our analysis of the intraband kinetics of the terahertz-field driven nonequilibrium state using the Boltzmann transport theory. Our results indicate that the driven nonlinear kinetics of the Dirac electrons plays the central role for the observed highly nonlinear response.

Electronic Inhomogeneity Influence on the Anomalous Hall Resistivity Loops of SrRuO3 Epitaxially Interfaced with 5d Perovskites

SrRuO₃, a 4d ferromagnet with multiple Weyl nodes at the Fermi level, offers a rich playground to design epitaxial heterostructures and superlattices with fascinating magnetic and magnetotransport properties. Interfacing ultrathin SrRuO₃ layers with large spin-orbit coupling 5d transition-metal oxides, such as SrIrO₃, results in pronounced peaklike anomalies in the magnetic field dependence of the Hall resistivity. Such anomalies have been attributed either to the formation of Néel-type skyrmions or to modifications of the Berry curvature of the topologically nontrivial conduction bands near the Fermi level of SrRuO₃. Here, epitaxial multilayers based on SrRuO₃ interfaced with 5d perovskite oxides, such as SrIrO₃ and SrHfO₃, were studied. This work focuses on the magnetotransport properties of the multilayers, aiming to unravel the role played by the interfaces with 5d perovskites in the peaklike anomalies of the Hall resistance loops of SrRuO₃ layers. Interfacing with large band gap insulating SrHfO₃ layers did not influence the anomalous Hall resistance loops, while interfacing with the nominally paramagnetic semimetal SrIrO₃ resulted in pronounced peaklike anomalies, which have been lately attributed to a topological Hall effect contribution as a result of skyrmions. This interpretation is, however, under strong debate and lately alternative causes, such as inhomogeneity of the thickness and the electronic properties of the SrRuO₃ layers, have been considered. Aligned with these latter proposals, our findings reveal the central role played in the anomalies of the Hall resistivity loops by electronic inhomogeneity of SrRuO₃ layers due to the interfacing with semimetallic 5d⁵ SrIrO₃.

Incoherent phonon population and exciton-exciton annihilation dynamics in monolayer WS2 revealed by time-resolved Resonance Raman scattering

Atomically thin layer transition metal dichalcogenides have been intensively investigated for their rich optical properties and potential applications on nano-electronics. In this work, we study the incoherent phonon and exciton population dynamics in monolayer WS₂ by time-resolved Resonance Raman scattering spectroscopy. Upon excitation of the exciton transition, both Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering strength of the optical and the longitudinal acoustic two phonon modes exhibit large reduction. Based on the assumption of quasi-equilibrium distribution, the hidden phonon population dynamics is retrieved, which shows an instant build-up and a relaxation lifetime of ∼4 ps at the exciton density ∼10¹²cm^-2. A phonon temperature rises of ∼20 K was identified due to the exciton excitation and relaxation. The exciton relaxation dynamics extracted from the transient vibrational Raman response shows strong excitation density dependence, signaling an important bi-molecular contribution to the decay. These results provide significant knowledge on the thermal dynamics after optical excitation, enhance the understanding of the fundamental exciton dynamics in two-dimensional transition metal materials, and demonstrate that time-resolved Resonance Raman scattering spectroscopy is a powerful method for exploring quasi-particle dynamics in optical materials.

Exciton and phonon dynamics in highly aligned 7-atom wide armchair graphene nanoribbons as seen by time-resolved spontaneous Raman scattering

The opening of a band gap in graphene nanoribbons induces novel optical and electronic properties, strongly enhancing their application potential in nanoscale devices. Knowledge of the optical excitations and associated relaxation dynamics are essential for developing and optimizing device designs and functionality. Here we report on the optical excitations and associated relaxation dynamics in surface aligned 7-atom wide armchair graphene nanoribbons as seen by time-resolved spontaneous Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy. On the anti-Stokes side we observe an optically induced increase of the scattering intensity of the Raman active optical phonons which we assign to changes in the optical phonon populations. The optical phonon population decays with a lifetime of ∼2 ps, indicating an efficient optical-acoustic phonon cooling mechanism. On the Stokes side we observe a substantial decrease of the phonon peak intensities which we relate to the dynamics of the optically induced exciton population. The exciton population shows a multi-exponential relaxation on the hundreds of ps time scale and is independent of the excitation intensity, indicating that exciton-exciton annihilation processes are not important and the exsistence of dark and trapped exciton states. Our results shed light on the optically induced phonon and exciton dynamics in surface aligned armchair graphene nanoribbons and demonstrate that time-resolved spontaneous Raman scattering spectroscopy is a powerful method for exploring quasi-particle dynamics in low dimensional materials.

Bulk heterojunction morphology of polymer:fullerene blends revealed by ultrafast spectroscopy

Morphology of organic photovoltaic bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) - a nanoscale texture of the donor and acceptor phases - is one of the key factors influencing efficiency of organic solar cells. Detailed knowledge of the morphology is hampered by the fact that it is notoriously difficult to investigate by microscopic methods. Here we all-optically track the exciton harvesting dynamics in the fullerene acceptor phase from which subdivision of the fullerene domain sizes into the mixed phase (2-15 nm) and large (>50 nm) domains is readily obtained via the Monte-Carlo simulations. These results were independently confirmed by a combination of X-ray scattering, electron and atomic-force microscopies, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. In the large domains, the excitons are lost due to the high energy disorder while in the ordered materials the excitons are harvested with high efficiency even from the domains as large as 100 nm due to the absence of low-energy traps. Therefore, optimizing of blend nanomorphology together with increasing the material order are deemed as winning strategies in the exciton harvesting optimization.

Periodic Hartree–Fock and hybrid density functional calculations on the metallic and the insulating phase of (EDO-TTF)2PF6

Electronic band structures obtained from quantum chemical calculations are used to discuss the metal–insulator phase transition in (EDO-TTF)₂PF₆in terms of a Peierls mechanism.

Phonon-magnon interaction in low dimensional quantum magnets observed by dynamic heat transport measurements

Thirty-five years ago, Sanders and Walton [Phys. Rev. B 15, 1489 (1977)] proposed a method to measure the phonon-magnon interaction in antiferromagnets through thermal transport which so far has not been verified experimentally. We show that a dynamical variant of this approach allows direct extraction of the phonon-magnon equilibration time, yielding 400 μs for the cuprate spin-ladder system Ca(9)La(5)Cu(24)O(41). The present work provides a general method to directly address the spin-phonon interaction by means of dynamical transport experiments.

Off-planar geometry and structural instability of EDO-TTF explained by using the extended debye polarizability model for bond angles

The geometry of ethylenedioxy-tetrathiafulvalene, EDO-TTF, plays an important role in the metal-insulator transition in the charge transfer salt (EDO-TTF)(2)PF(6). The planar and off-planar geometrical conformations of the EDO-TTF molecules are explained using an extended Debye polarizability model for the bond angle. The geometrical structure of EDO-TTF is dictated by its four sulfur bond angles and these are, in turn, determined by the polarizability of the sulfur atoms. With Hartree-Fock and second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory calculations on EDO-TTF, TTF, H(2)S, and their oxygen and selenium substituted counterparts we confirm this hypothesis. The Debye polarizability model for bond angles relates directly the optimum bond angle with the polarizability of the center atom. Considering the (EDO-TTF)(2)PF(6) material in this light proves to be very fruitful.

Antiferromagnetic S=1/2 spin chain driven by p-orbital ordering in CsO2

We demonstrate, using a combination of experiment and density functional theory, that orbital ordering drives the formation of a one-dimensional (1D) S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain in the 3D rocksalt structure of cesium superoxide (CsO2). The magnetic superoxide anion (O2(-)) exhibits degeneracy of its 2p-derived molecular orbitals, which is lifted by a structural distortion on cooling. A spin chain is then formed by zigzag ordering of the half-filled superoxide orbitals, promoting a superexchange pathway mediated by the p(z) orbitals of Cs(+) along only one crystal direction. This scenario is analogous to the 3d-orbital-driven spin chain found in the perovskite KCuF3 and is the first example of an inorganic quantum spin system with unpaired p electrons.

The role of driving energy and delocalized States for charge separation in organic semiconductors

The electron-hole pair created via photon absorption in organic photoconversion systems must overcome the Coulomb attraction to achieve long-range charge separation. We show that this process is facilitated through the formation of excited, delocalized band states. In our experiments on organic photovoltaic cells, these states were accessed for a short time (<1 picosecond) via infrared (IR) optical excitation of electron-hole pairs bound at the heterojunction. Atomistic modeling showed that the IR photons promote bound charge pairs to delocalized band states, similar to those formed just after singlet exciton dissociation, which indicates that such states act as the gateway for charge separation. Our results suggest that charge separation in efficient organic photoconversion systems occurs through hot-state charge delocalization rather than energy-gradient-driven intermolecular hopping.

Efficient two-step photogeneration of long-lived charges in ground-state charge-transfer complexes of conjugated polymer doped with fullerene

Polarization-sensitive time-resolved visible-infrared pump-probe experiments demonstrate that one can efficiently generate long-lived charges in donor-acceptor charge transfer complex (CTC) of conjugated polymer doped with fullerene, MEH-PPV/dinitroanthraquinone/C(60). In particular, a strong enhancement of the photoinduced charge generation is observed in the red part of the spectrum, i.e. inside the polymer band gap, which makes the current material attractive for photovoltaic applications. The spectroscopic results indicate that enhanced generation of charges is due to a consecutive photoinduced electron transfer from the polymer to the CTC-acceptor in the first step and then, in the second step, to the fullerene. The LUMO energy difference between the CTC-acceptor and fullerene appears to be a key parameter for efficient charge separation in these ternary systems. The results are also discussed in respect to the charge generation processes in widely used polymer-fullerene blends, where formation of weak CTCs has recently been discovered.

Dynamics of spin and orbital phase transitions in YVO3

YVO3 exhibits a well separated sequence of orbital and spin order transitions at 200 and 116 K, followed by a combined spin-orbital reorientation at 77 K. It is shown that the spin order can be destroyed by a sufficiently strong optical pulse within less than 4 ps. In contrast, the orbital reordering transition from C-type to G-type orbital order is slower than 100 ps and goes via an intermediate nonthermal phase. We propose that the dynamics of phase transitions is subjected to symmetry relations between the associated phases.

Intramolecular energy transfer in a tetra-coumarin perylene system: influence of solvent and bridging unit on electronic properties

The synthesis and characterisation of a novel coumarin donor-perylene bisimide acceptor light-harvesting system is reported, in which an energy-transfer efficiency of >99% is achieved. Comparison of the excited-state properties of the donor-acceptor system with model compounds revealed that although the photophysical properties of the perylene bisimide acceptor unit are affected considerably by the nature of the substituent at the imide positions and the solvent employed, through-bond interaction between the donor and acceptor units is negligible. Energy transfer in the present system can be described as occurring via a through-space energy-transfer mechanism. Careful consideration of the redox properties of the donor relative to the acceptor units allows for avoidance of potentially deleterious excited-state electron-transfer processes.
