Abstract
Creatine has been used to maximize resistance training effects on skeletal muscles, including muscle hypertrophy and fiber type changes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of creatine supplementation on the myostatin pathway and myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms in the slow- and fast-twitch muscles of resistance-trained rats. Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: a sedentary control (Cc), sedentary creatine supplementation (Cr), resistance training (Tc), and resistance training combined with creatine supplementation (Tcr). Cc and Tc received standard commercial chow; Cr and Tcr received a 2% creatine-supplemented diet. Tc and Tcr performed a resistance training protocol on a ladder for 12 weeks. Morphology, MyHC isoforms, myostatin, follistatin, and ActRIIB protein expressions were analyzed in soleus and white gastrocnemius portion samples. The results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Tc and Tcr exhibited higher performance than their control counterparts. Resistance training increased the ratio between muscle and body weight, the cross-sectional area, as well as the interstitial collagen fraction. Resistance training alone increased MyHC IIx and follistatin while reducing myostatin (p < 0.001) and ActRIIB (p = 0.040) expressions in the gastrocnemius. Resistance training induced skeletal muscle hypertrophy and interstitial remodeling, which are more evident in the gastrocnemius muscle. The effects were not impacted by creatine supplementation.

Abstract
Spondyloarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are classified as inflammatory arthritis and represent a significant source of pain and disability. Non-pharmacological intervention with physical exercise is among the therapeutic approaches most used by health professionals. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of aquatic exercise in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis. The review was registered on the PROSPERO (CRD42020189602). The databases (PubMed, PEDro, Web of Science, and SciELO) were searched for studies involving adults with inflammatory arthritis and subjected to rehabilitation with aquatic exercise compared to any other control group, from the year 2010 to March 2022. Pain, disease activity, and physical function were regarded as primary outcomes. Two reviewers completed the eligibility screening and data extraction, and disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. The methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. A total of 5254 studies were identified, and nine articles were included, totalling 604 participants. Regarding pain, two studies showed that aquatic exercise was superior to home exercise. One study showed that disease activity was significantly improved in the aquatic group compared to the land-based exercise and the control groups (no exercise). Two studies reported that therapy containing aquatic exercise was able to improve physical function. Overall, the studies included in this review indicate that aquatic exercise is effective in treating pain, disease activity, and physical function in individuals with inflammatory arthritis. However, further studies carrying stronger evidence should be conducted to determine whether the treatment with aquatic exercise is superior to other types of therapies.

Abstract
Introdução: O futebol é a modalidade esportiva mais praticada no mundo com milhões de adeptos, incluindo-se crianças e adolescentes. Objetivo: Analisar a ocorrência de lesões esportivas (LEs) e sua relação com fatores associados às lesões em jovens jogadores de futebol. Método: A casuística foi constituída por 102 jogadores (de 12 a 18 anos de idade) procedentes de dois clubes de futebol. Foram registradas informações sobre treinamento e antropometria e os dados de LEs foram obtidos por meio de inquérito de morbidade referida. Considerando-se a taxa de LEs por participante (2,4 LEs/ indivíduo), foram estabelecidos dois grupos: Grupo 1 (G1, n=61), constituído por voluntários com histórico de até dois casos de LEs, e Grupo 2 (G2, n=41), com participantes com pelo menos três casos de LEs. Resultados: Foram registrados 245 casos de LEs em 81 participantes (prevalência de 79,4%). Trauma foi a principal causa de lesões musculoesqueléticas (56,8%); 74,7% envolveram membros inferiores. Composição corporal e exposição foram diretamente associadas à recorrência de LEs. O G2 mostrou maior massa corporal (G1, 56,7±9,5; G2, 61,6±12,5kg) e maior histórico de prática esportiva (G1, 4,8±2,6; G2, 6,2±2,7 anos) do que o G1. Conclusão: A maioria das LEs teve instalação em membros inferiores devido a trauma. Quanto maior o índice de massacorporal e a exposição a treinos, maior a chance de apresentar três ou mais lesões

Abstract
This review analyzed the studies that evaluated cardiovascular health indicators (blood pressure, waist circumference, heart rate, glucose index and lipid blood) in recreational soccer players during adolescence, and identify possible associated factors. The search was performed in the electronic databases (PubMED, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science). Inclusion criteria were: population composed of children and/or adolescents (10-19 years or average age up to 19 years); studies adolescents engaged in recreational soccer regularly and observational studies with cross-sectional or longitudinal design. The process of analysis of studies involved reading titles, abstracts and full texts. After these phases, seven articles were eligible. Regarding the design, all studies were cross-sectional. Of the total studies included, five presented moderate methodological quality values and two presented low methodological quality values, according to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute instrument. The most cardiovascular health indicators used in recreational soccer players during adolescence was waist circumference; three studies analyzed heart rate, two evaluated blood pressure, one analyzed insulin resistance and none of the included studies analyzed lipid profile. Factors associated were analyzed in four studies, being that sedentary time and body mass index (BMI) present association with at least one indicator of cardiovascular health.

Abstract
Fundamento A influência de intervenções não farmacológicas como restrição calórica e exercício físico sobre a saúde e prevenção de enfermidades cardíacas tem sido documentada em estudos clínicos e experimentais. Objetivo Analisar a influência da combinação entre dieta intermitente e exercício físico sobre a capacidade funcional, metabolismo glicêmico e remodelação cardíaca. Métodos Foram utilizados 60 ratos Wistar machos distribuídos em quatro grupos: Controle (C), Exercício Físico (EF), Dieta Intermitente (DI) e Exercício Físico e Dieta Intermitente (EDI). Durante 12 semanas, enquanto C e EF foram tratados diariamente com dieta comercial padrão ad libitum, DI e EDI receberam dieta similar em dias alternados com dias de jejum. Os grupos EF e EDI foram submetidos a protocolo de corrida em esteira rolante. Posteriormente, foram analisadas capacidade funcional, comportamento nutricional e metabolismo glicêmico. Além da morfologia do coração, a expressão proteica das proteínas extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) e c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) no coração foi avaliada por Western-blot. A análise dos resultados foi feita por meio de Two-Way ANOVA e teste de Student-Newman-Keuls. O nível de significância considerado foi de 5%. Resultados O exercício físico aumentou a capacidade funcional nos grupos EF e EDI, e acarretou fibrose cardíaca. A combinação entre dieta intermitente e exercício físico resultou em menor área sob a curva de glicemia e menores medidas de área e interstício cardíaco no EDI em relação ao EF. A expressão de proteínas ERK e JNK foi similar entre os grupos (p>0,05). Conclusões Dieta intermitente se associa com melhor tolerância glicêmica e atenua o processo de remodelação cardíaca decorrente do exercício físico. (Arq Bras Cardiol. 2020; 115(2):184-193)

Abstract
Fundamento A obesidade tem sido associada com ativação crônica do sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona e importantes alterações no desempenho cardíaco. Objetivo Avaliar a influência do bloqueio de receptores de angiotensina-II do tipo 1 (AT1) sobre a morfologia e desempenho cardíaco de ratos obesos por dieta Métodos Ratos Wistar (n=48) foram submetidos a dieta controle (2,9 kcal/g) ou hiperlipídica (3,6 kcal/g) durante 20 semanas. Após a 16ª semana, foram distribuídos em quatro grupos: Controle (CO), Obeso (OB), Controle Losartan (CL) e Obeso Losartan (OL). CL e OL receberam losartan (30 mg/kg/dia) na água durante quatro semanas. Posteriormente, foram analisadas composição corporal, pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) e ecocardiograma. A função de músculos papilares foi avaliada em situação basal com concentração de cálcio ([Ca2+]o) de 2,50 mM e após manobras inotrópicas: potencial pós-pausa (PPP), elevação da [Ca2+]o e durante estimulação beta-adrenérgica com isoproterenol. A análise dos resultados foi feita por meio de Two-Way ANOVA e teste de comparações apropriado. O nível de significância considerado foi de 5%. Resultados Embora a alteração da PAS não tenha se mantido ao final do experimento, a obesidade se associou com hipertrofia cardíaca e maior velocidade de encurtamento da parede posterior do ventrículo esquerdo.No estudo de músculos papilares em condição basal, CL mostrou menor velocidade máxima de variação negativa da tensão desenvolvida (-dT/dt) do que CO. O PPP de 60s promoveu menor -dT/dt e pico de tensão desenvolvida (TD) em OB e CL, comparados ao CO, e maior variação relativa de TD e velocidade máxima de variação positiva (+dT/dt) no OL em relação a CL e OB. Sob 1,5, 2,0 e 2,5mM de [Ca2+]o, o grupo OL exibiu maior -dT/dt do que CL. Conclusão Losartan melhora a função miocárdica de ratos com obesidade induzida por dieta. Abstract
Resumo Objetivo: Avaliar, por meio de revisão sistemática, a influência do tratamento fisioterapêutico sobre a funcionalidade, amplitude de movimento articular e força muscular em pacientes submetidos à artroplastia total de quadril devido à osteoartrite. Métodos: A busca sistemática de ensaios clínicos randomizados e não randomizados foi conduzida utilizando os bancos de dados eletrônicos PubMed, Web of Science, PEDro, Cochrane, Clinical Trials e SciELO, com base nas estratégias de pesquisa recomendadas pelos itens de relatórios preferenciais para análises sistemáticas e metanálises (PRISMA). Resultados: Em geral, protocolos supervisionados por fisioterapeutas associados à realização de exercícios ativos da musculatura periarticular do quadril e de extensores de joelho têm propiciado importante prognóstico físico e funcional. Exercícios resistidos (dinâmicos e isométricos) de alta intensidade são mais eficazes para a funcionalidade. Para a força muscular e Amplitude de movimento (ADM), exercícios dinâmicos com 3 a 5 séries de 8 a 12 repetições com baixa e alta intensidade promoveram ganhos mais expressivos em relação a outras modalidades terapêuticas. Conclusões: As técnicas e os protocolos utilizados pela fisioterapia para o tratamento da ATQ são variados e possuem importante eficácia clínica comprovada na literatura.

Abstract
Background Information on the role of intermittent fasting (IF) on pathologic cardiac remodeling is scarce. We compared the effects of IF before and after myocardial infarction (MI) on rat cardiac remodeling and survival. Methods Wistar rats were intermittently fasted (food available every other day) or fed ad libitum for 12 weeks and then divided into three groups: AL – fed ad libitum; AL/IF - fed AL before MI and IF after MI; and IF – fed IF before and after MI. Echocardiogram was performed before MI and 2 and 12 weeks after surgery. Isolated hearts were evaluated in Langendorff preparations. Results Before surgery, body weight (BW) was lower in IF than AL. Final BW was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL. Perioperative mortality did not change between AL (31.3%) and IF (27.3%). Total mortality was lower in IF than AL. Before surgery, echocardiographic parameters did not differ between groups. Two weeks after surgery, MI size did not differ between groups. Twelve weeks after MI, left ventricular (LV) diastolic posterior wall thickness was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL. The percentage of variation of echocardiographic parameters between twelve and two weeks showed that MI size decreased in all groups and the reduction was higher in IF than AL/IF. In Langendorff preparations, LV volume at zero end-diastolic pressure (V0; AL: 0.41 ± 0.05; AL/IF: 0.34 ± 0.06; IF: 0.28 ± 0.05 mL) and at 25 mmHg end-diastolic pressure (V25; AL: 0.61 ± 0.05; AL/IF: 0.54 ± 0.07; IF: 0.44 ± 0.06 mL) was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL and V25 was lower in IF than AL/IF. V0/BW ratio was lower in IF than AL and LV weight/V0 ratio was higher in IF than AL. Myocyte diameter was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL (AL: 17.3 ± 1.70; AL/IF: 15.1 ± 2.21; IF: 13.4 ± 1.49 μm). Myocardial hydroxyproline concentration and gene expression of ANP, Serca 2a, and α- and β-myosin heavy chain did not differ between groups. Conclusion Intermittent fasting initiated before or after MI reduces myocyte hypertrophy and LV dilation. Myocardial fibrosis and fetal gene expression are not modulated by feeding regimens. Benefit is more evident when intermittent fasting is initiated before rather than after MI.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: Physical exercise promotes positive physiological adaptations, reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and promoting greater autonomic control of heart rate and reduction in pressure levels. Objective: To compare the behavior of arterial pressure and autonomic heart rate modulation in the 1-repetition maximum knee extension test, performed on the 45-degree leg press machine in normotensive and prehypertensive subjects. Methods: Twenty-four male volunteers were assessed. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate variability (HRV) were evaluated at rest, immediately after the maximum load achieved and during the 10, 20, 30 and 40-minute recovery phases. Statistical analyses were obtained using SigmaStat 3.5 software and a level of significance of 5%. Results: Mean and standard deviation were used to identify 12 normotensive patients (N) aged = 25.5 ± 5.7 years; height = 174.3 ± 6.6 cm; BMI = 24.9 ± 2.4; SBP on average = 112.6 ± 5.6 mmHg and 12 prehypertensive (PH) patients aged = 29.8 ± 6.5 years; height = 175.7 ± 6.7 cm; BMI = 27.8 ± 6.5; mean SBP = 131.1 ± 3.2 mmHg. There was a statistical difference in the pNN50 index (%) at rest (PH = 1.13 ± 0.66 and N = 1.58 ± 0.35) and in the LF/HF index, also at rest (PH = 0.18 ± 0.29 and N = −0.18 ± 0.36). Conclusion: The one-repetition maximum (1RM) test did not promote cardiovascular risk in the prehypertensive group during its execution, with double product results lower than 30,000 mmHg.bpm, demonstrating lower cardiac overload. Moreover, HRV exhibited similarity in sympathetic-vagal behavior, in the time/frequency domain, between the groups. Level of Evidence III; Study Case-control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brazilian jiu-jitsu is characterized by musculoskeletal disorders and high occurrence of sports injuries. The present study was aimed to analyze some internal factors, as well as to describe occurrence and characteristics of retrospective musculoskeletal injuries in different age groups of Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners. METHODS One hundred ninety-three Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners, which were divided into three age groups: Adolescent, Adult, and Master. Besides anthropometric characterization, standard clinical tests were conducted to analyze the global and segmental joint flexibility, lumbar spine range of motion, and handgrip strength. Sports injury occurrence and total physical activity were obtained from an adapted morbidity survey and International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Form (IPAQ-SF), respectively. RESULTS A total of 247 cases of retrospective injuries was registered (1.27 injury/ participant). Occurrence of rectus femoral muscle retraction in the right leg was increased within Master. Adult and Master have exhibited higher occurrence of sports injuries than Adolescent group (p < 0.05). Joint injuries were the most common sports-related injuries by all Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners. While female gender and exposure time constituted the most predictive variables for sports injury occurrence in Adolescent, graduation level was more associated with sports injuries occurrence in Adult. CONCLUSIONS Joint injuries derived from combat demands were the main sports injury in all age categories of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Master subjects presented a higher occurrence of clinical changes and retrospective musculoskeletal injuries in relation to other age groups. Female gender and exposure time constituted the main predictive factors in adolescent subjects, while graduation category was more directly associated with retrospective injury onset in the Adult group.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle abnormalities are responsible for significant disability in the elderly. Sarcopenia is the main alteration occurring during senescence and a key public health issue as it predicts frailty, poor quality of life, and mortality. Several factors such as reduced physical activity, hormonal changes, insulin resistance, genetic susceptibility, appetite loss, and nutritional deficiencies are involved in the physiopathology of muscle changes. Sarcopenia is characterized by structural, biochemical, molecular and functional muscle changes. An imbalance between anabolic and catabolic intracellular signaling pathways and an increase in oxidative stress both play important roles in muscle abnormalities. Currently, despite the discovery of new targets and development of new drugs, nonpharmacological therapies such as physical exercise and nutritional support are considered the basis for prevention and treatment of age-associated muscle abnormalities. There has been an increase in information on signaling pathways beneficially modulated by exercise; nonetheless, studies are needed to establish the best type, intensity, and frequency of exercise to prevent or treat age-induced skeletal muscle alterations.

Abstract
RESUMO A prática de judô integra situações variadas de contato físico e exigências específicas, tornando-o uma modalidade competitiva e com alto índice de lesões musculoesqueléticas (LME). Este estudo transversal teve por objetivo descrever a epidemiologia de LME e analisar a relação entre diferentes características e a ocorrência de lesão em judocas. A casuística integrou 111 participantes de ambos os sexos. Para tomar informações sobre lesões, utilizou-se um inquérito de morbidade referida. Para análise estatística, foi empregado o teste de Goodman de proporções multinomiais. A relação entre fatores associados com LME foi avaliada por meio de regressão logística. Foram relatados 135 LME, com prevalência de 65% (72 esportistas), totalizando 1,22 LME/atleta. A maioria dos relatos foi constituída por lesões articulares decorrentes de traumas (n=50 casos, 37%), sendo que entorse de tornozelo (25,2%) e luxação de ombro (17,8%) foram os casos com maior frequência. Entre as lesões ósseas, verificou-se maior proporção de casos graves (25 casos; 18,5%). Sexo e carga horária semanal constituíram-se como as principais características preditivas para ocorrência de LME no judô (p<0,001). Conclui-se que as lesões articulares traumáticas em tornozelo e ombro foram as principais LME no judô. Sexo masculino e maior carga horária semanal constituíram-se como as principais características preditivas de lesão entre judocas.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction: In soccer, the players’ positions have been associated with specific functional overload, which may cause sports injuries. Objective: To investigate the occurrence and characterize sport injuries according to soccer player position. Methods: 232 male soccer players (129 professionals and 103 amateurs) from different sport teams in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, were distributed in groups according to their soccer player position. Besides anthropometric characteristics, sports injuries were registered by using a referred morbidity survey. The occurrence of injuries was analyzed by means of the Goodman Test. Logistic regression models were used to investigate the relationship between different risk factors and the occurrence/-recurrence of sports injuries. Results: Forwards showed higher occurrence rates of sport injuries than other soccer position groups. Joint injuries in lower limbs constituted the most frequent registered cases. Muscle injuries in the back region were the most registered sports injuries among midfielders, while muscle damages in lower limbs were the primary injuries registered for other line positions. In the etiologic context, contact was the main cause of sports injuries in all groups. Most athletes (195) reported recurrence of sports injuries. Conclusion: The occurrence of sports injuries was higher among forwards. Traumatic joint and muscle injuries were the most prevalent registers in all line positions.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Aldosterone plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of systolic heart failure. However, whether early aldosterone antagonism improves cardiac remodeling during persistent pressure overload is unsettled. We evaluated the effects of aldosterone antagonist spironolactone on cardiac remodeling in rats with ascending aortic stenosis (AS). METHODS Three days after inducing AS, weaning rats were randomized to receive spironolactone (AS-SPR, 20mg/kg/day) or no drug (AS) for 18weeks, and compared with sham-operated rats. Myocardial function was studied in isolated left ventricular (LV) papillary muscles. STATISTICAL ANALYSES ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis tests. RESULTS Echocardiogram showed that LV diastolic (Sham 8.73±0.57; AS 8.30±1.10; AS-SPR 9.19±1.15mm) and systolic (Sham 4.57±0.67; AS 3.61±1.49; AS-SPR 4.62±1.48mm) diameters, left atrial diameter (Sham 5.80±0.44; AS 7.15±1.22; AS-SPR 8.02±1.17mm), and LV mass were higher in AS-SPR than AS. Posterior wall shortening velocity (Sham 38.5±3.8; AS 35.6±5.6; AS-SPR 31.1±3.8mm/s) was lower in AS-SPR than Sham and AS; E/A ratio was higher in AS-SPR than Sham. Developed tension was lower in AS and AS-SPR than Sham. Time to peak tension was higher in AS-SPR than Sham and AS after post-rest contraction. Right ventricle weight was higher in AS-SPR than AS, suggesting more severe heart failure in AS-SPR than AS. Interstitial collagen fractional area and myocardial hydroxyproline concentration were higher in AS than Sham. Metalloproteinase-2 and -9 activity, evaluated by zymography, did not differ between groups. CONCLUSION Early spironolactone administration causes further hypertrophy in cardiac chambers, and left ventricular dilation and dysfunction in rats with AS-induced chronic pressure overload.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myostatin has been shown to regulate skeletal and cardiac muscle growth. However, its status on long-term hypertrophied myocardium has not been addressed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of myocardial myostatin and its antagonist follistatin in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with heart failure. METHODS Eighteen-month-old SHR were evaluated to identify clinical features of heart failure such as tachypnea/labored respiration and weight loss. After heart failure was detected, rats were subjected to echocardiogram and euthanized. Age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were used as controls. Myostatin and follistatin protein expression was assessed by Western blotting. Statistical analysis was performed by Student's t test. RESULTS All SHR (n=8) presented right ventricular hypertrophy and five had lung congestion. SHR had left chambers hypertrophy and dilation (left atrial diameter: WKY 5.73±0.59; SHR 7.28±1.17mm; p=0.004; left ventricular (LV) diastolic diameter/body weight ratio: WKY 19.6±3.1; SHR 27.7±4.7mm/kg; p=0.001), and LV systolic dysfunction (midwall fractional shortening: WKY 34.9±3.31; SHR 24.8±3.20%; p=0.003). Myocyte diameter (WKY 23.1±1.50, SHR 25.5±1.33μm; p=0.004) and myocardial interstitial collagen fraction (WKY 4.86±0.01; SHR 8.36±0.02%; p<0.001) were increased in the SHR. Myostatin (WKY 1.00±0.16; SHR 0.77±0.23 arbitrary units; p=0.035) and follistatin (WKY 1.00±0.35; SHR 0.49±0.18 arbitrary units; p=0.002) expression was lower in SHR. Myostatin and follistatin expression negatively correlated with LV diastolic diameter-to-body weight ratio and LV systolic diameter, and positively correlated with midwall fractional shortening. CONCLUSION Myostatin and follistatin protein expression is reduced in the long-term hypertrophied myocardium from spontaneously hypertensive rats with heart failure.

Abstract
<p>Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar a epidemiologia de lesões musculoesqueléticas (LME) no futebol, relacionando-as com frequência de prática e nível de atividade física. A casuística integrou 126 participantes homens, praticantes regulares de futebol amador em diferentes centros poliesportivos de Campo Grande/MS. Os participantes foram distribuídos em quatro grupos, de acordo com a frequência semanal de prática de futebol: G1, um dia, G2, dois dias, G3, três dias, e G4, quatro ou mais dias de atividade, com duração de 10 a 60 minutos. Para a tomada de informações sobre o nível de atividade física e LME, foram utilizados, respectivamente, o questionário internacional de atividade física (IPAQ) e um inquérito de morbidade referida. Não se constatou uma associação entre prática de futebol e nível de atividade física; o G4 mostrou maiores valores de gasto metabólico. Foram registrados 96 LME, envolvendo 87 participantes (69%), totalizando 1,52 LME/ praticante. Constatou-se um predomínio de lesões musculares (36%) e articulares (34%) em membros inferiores. O trauma constituiu o principal mecanismo de lesão (28%), destacando-se como a maior causa no G3. Foi possível constatar que a frequência de prática de futebol não se associa diretamente com a ocorrência de LME entre jogadores amadores de futebol.</p>

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although nutritional, metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities are commonly seen in experimental studies of obesity, it is uncertain whether these effects result from the treatment or from body adiposity. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of treatment and body composition on metabolic and cardiovascular aspects in rats receiving high saturated fat diet. METHODS Sixteen Wistar rats were used, distributed into two groups, the control (C) group, treated with isocaloric diet (2.93 kcal/g) and an obese (OB) group, treated with high-fat diet (3.64 kcal/g). The study period was 20 weeks. Analyses of nutritional behavior, body composition, glycemia, cholesterolemia, lipemia, systolic arterial pressure, echocardiography, and cardiac histology were performed. RESULTS High-fat diet associates with manifestations of obesity, accompanied by changes in glycemia, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, and myocardial interstitial fibrosis. After adjusting for adiposity, the metabolic effects were normalized, whereas differences in morphometric changes between groups were maintained. CONCLUSION It was concluded that adiposity body composition has a stronger association with metabolic disturbances in obese rodents, whereas the high-fat dietary intervention is found to be more related to cardiac morphological changes in experimental models of diet-induced obesity.

Abstract
Background The combination of systemic arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) induces greater cardiac remodeling than either condition alone. However, this association has been poorly addressed in senescent rats. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the influence of streptozotocin-induced DM on ventricular remodeling and oxidative stress in aged spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Methods Fifty 18 month old male SHR were divided into two groups: control (SHR, n = 25) and diabetic (SHR-DM, n = 25). DM was induced by streptozotocin (40 mg/kg, i.p.). After nine weeks, the rats underwent echocardiography and myocardial functional study in left ventricular (LV) isolated papillary muscle preparations. LV samples were obtained to measure myocyte diameters, interstitial collagen fraction, and hydroxyproline concentration. Gene expression of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and α- and β-myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms was evaluated by RT-PCR. Serum oxidative stress was assessed by measuring lipid hydroperoxide concentration and superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities. Statistics: Student’s t test or Mann-Whitney test, p < 0.05. Results SHR-DM presented higher blood glucose (487 ± 29 vs. 89.1 ± 21.1 mg/dL) and lower body weight (277 ± 26 vs. 339 ± 38 g). Systolic blood pressure did not differ between groups. Echocardiography showed LV and left atrial dilation, LV diastolic and relative wall thickness decrease, and LV systolic and diastolic function impairment in SHR-DM. Papillary muscle study showed decreased myocardial contractility and contractile reserve in SHR-DM. Myocyte diameters and myocardial interstitial collagen fraction and hydroxyproline concentration did not differ between groups. Increased serum pro-oxidant activity and gene expression of ANP and β/α-MyHC ratio were observed in DM. Conclusion Diabetes mellitus induces cardiac dilation and functional impairment, increases oxidative stress and activates fetal gene program in aged spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle abnormalities can contribute to decreased exercise capacity in heart failure. Although muscle atrophy is a common alteration in heart failure, the mechanisms responsible for muscle mass reduction are not clear. Myostatin, a member of TGF-beta family (transforming growth factor), regulates muscle growth and mass. Several studies have shown a negative correlation between myostatin expression and muscle mass. The aim of this study was to evaluate myostatin expression in skeletal muscles of rats with heart failure. As myostatin gene expression can be modulated by follistatin, we also evaluated its expression. Heart failure was induced by myocardial infarction (MI, n = 10); results were compared to Sham-operated group (n = 10). Ventricular function was assessed by echocardiogram. Gene expression was analyzed by real-time PCR and protein levels by Western blotting in the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles; fibre trophism was evaluated by morphometric analysis. MI group presented heart failure evidence such as pleural effusion and right ventricular hypertrophy. Left ventricular dilation and dysfunction were observed in MI group. In the soleus muscle, cross-sectional area (P = 0.006) and follistatin protein levels (Sham 1.00 +/- 0.36; MI 0.18 +/- 0.06 arbitrary units; P = 0.03) were lower in MI and there was a trend for follistatin gene expression to be lower in MI group (P = 0.085). There was no change in myostatin expression between groups. In gastrocnemius, all MI group parameters were statistically similar to the Sham. In conclusion, our data show that during chronic heart failure, decreased skeletal muscle trophism is combined with unchanged myostatin and reduced follistatin expression.

Abstract
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has been associated with a deletion of the short arm of chromosome 3. One SCLC cell line, H748, has an interstitial deletion of chromosome 3p and shows allele loss for the DNF15S2 locus detected by the probe lambda H3. Conservation of DNF15S2 sequences in mouse indicated that this human genomic fragment may contain coding sequences. Screening of a normal lung cDNA library with chromosome 3-specific fragments of the lambda H3 probe resulted in the isolation of 18 positive clones. The cDNA clones detect an additional DNA polymorphism that is in linkage disequilibrium with the HindIII polymorphism of the DNF15S2 locus. Sequence analysis indicated that the DNF15S2 locus could potentially code for a previously unreported protein of 67 kDa which has 26 cysteine residues. DNF15S2 is part of the coding region of a 3.3-kb mRNA expressed in lung. Northern analysis indicated that this mRNA was not detectable in one of five SCLC lines. This SCLC line, H128, also lacks the enzyme aminoacylase 1.
