Influence of anti-inflammatory drugs and free radical scavengers on intestinal ischemia induced oxidative tissue damage

The influence of oxygen free radical scavengers and anti-inflammatory drugs on postischemic lipid peroxidation and myeloperoxidase activity was shown. The best results were obtained from vitamin E and the antiinflammatory treatment with CP and SUL, whereas an iron elimination only showed slight effects on myeloperoxidase activity above all. In experiments without therapy a linear increase of lipid peroxides dependent on reperfusion durance was found, whereas myeloperoxidase already showed a remarkable increase during ischemia and early reperfusion. This difference can be interpreted by scavenging mechanisms, which are overcharged after an appointed durance of reperfusion.

Influence of free radical scavengers on myeloperoxidase activity and lipid peroxidation in acute skin grafts

Activated neutrophil granulocytes are an important source of oxygen free radicals in acute skin grafts. Lipid peroxidation and immigration of PMNs, indicating inflammatory mechanisms, affect each other to a variable extent. The effect of the scavengers allopurinol and alpha-D-tocopherol on both lipid peroxidation and neutrophilic infiltration was investigated. A possible mechanism for the superior effect of allopurinol compared to vitamin E was discussed.

Giant lichenification of the vulva with marked ulcerations. A case report

A case of vulvar giant lichenification of Pautrier showed uncommon ulcerations in the center of hyperplastic verrucoid plaques. The diagnosis was made from the history, clinical findings and characteristic features on the skin biopsy. Other causes of vulvar ulcers, such as venereal disease, chronic bullous and autoimmune diseases, and neoplastic conditions were excluded. We treated the patient with systemic antihistamines, topical antiseptics and corticosteroids, and sublesional injections of triamcinolone. The itch-scratch cycle was interrupted by the patient's wearing cotton gloves at night. Complete healing of the ulcers and an improvement in the pruritus was achieved within 14 weeks.

[Local treatment of disseminated granuloma anulare with a vitamin E emulsion]

The treatment of granuloma annulare is still unsatisfactory. A number of topical and systemic therapies have been tried, some of which can improve the condition, but serious side effects are possible with those reported so far. We treated a patient with disseminated granuloma annulare by local application of a vitamin E emulsion and achieved a marked improvement within as little as 12 days.

The status of women in the administration of health sciences libraries: a five-year follow-up study, 1972-1977

A follow-up survey was conducted in 1977, five years after a previous survey of head librarians in large biomedical libraries, to assess changes that had occurred in the representation of women in top administrative positions. Results for the 126 libraries that responded are reported in six category groupings, with comparative figures for 1977, 1972, and 1950. Also reported are data on head librarian and associate librarian positions and on the appointment rate of women and men to head librarian posts that became vacant from 1972 to 1977. Despite a large number of vacancies and turnover, which provided an opportunity for change to have occurred, the most striking aspect of the 1977 survey is the similarity of its results to those of the 1972 survey. Women made up over three-fourths of the librarian work force and held considerably less than one-half of the head librarian positions.

Women and health sciences librarianship: an overview

In biomedical libraries, as in other areas of librarianship, women continue to be underrepresented in administrative positions. This paper reviews some of the factors contributing to the present situation and discusses implications and suggested courses of action for health sciences librarians.

The status of women in the administration of health science libraries

Results of a survey of large health science libraries in the United States demonstrate that the relative position of men and women in administration is comparable to that prevalent in other types of libraries. Medical school and the largest libraries are the most likely to be administered by men. The percentage of women who are directors of large biomedical libraries has declined radically since 1950. The statistics presented here will serve as a base for assessing future change.
