Atrazine adsorption and desorption on functionalized montmorillonite: aluminum-pillared and lithium saturated

Atrazine is an herbicide used worldwide, and it is considered a severe environmental contaminant. The present study aims to evaluate the atrazine adsorption in aqueous media in montmorillonite samples which were either in natural state or functionalized through saturation with lithium and pillarization with aluminum by different methods. Montmorillonite saturated with lithium adsorbed significantly more atrazine than the natural montmorillonite sample. Among the samples obtained through the three aluminum-pillarization methods, the mass percentage of adsorbed atrazine was very similar. However, the best combination was the aluminum-pillarization (due to the maintenance of the open interlayer region) and saturation with lithium (due to the significant reduction of the cation exchange capacity of the mineral), because both processes facilitate the interaction of atrazine with the montmorillonite. Another advantage was that the adsorption of atrazine in the pillared and lithium saturated samples had small desorption, which is desirable in the environmental perspective. It is recommended to build filters with aluminum-hydroxy pillared, lithium saturated montmorillonite as an alternative method to rapidly remove atrazine from aqueous media. In addition to the shorter production time, this process resulted in montmorillonite with high occupancy rate and stability of the aluminum-hydroxy pillars.

Effects of a very-low-calorie diet on long-term glycemic control in obese type 2 diabetic subjects

We tested the hypothesis that the use of a very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) in combination with behavior modification would promote long-term glycemic control in obese type 2 diabetic subjects. Thirty-six diabetic subjects were randomly assigned to a standard behavior therapy program or to a behavior therapy program that included an 8-week period of VLCD. The behavior therapy group consumed a balanced diet of 4200 to 6300 J/d throughout the 20-week program. The VLCD group consumed a balanced diet of 4200 to 6300 J for weeks 1 to 4, followed by a VLCD (1680 J/d of lean meat, fish, and fowl) for weeks 5 to 12. The VLCD group then gradually reintroduced other foods during weeks 13 to 16 and consumed a balanced diet of 4200 to 6300 J/d for weeks 17 to 20. Thirty-three of the 36 subjects completed the 20-week program and the 1-year follow-up. Use of the VLCD produced greater decreases in fasting glucose at the end of the 20-week program and at 1-year follow-up and greater long-term reductions in HbA1. The VLCD group also had greater weight losses at week 20, but weight losses from pretreatment to 1-year follow-up were similar in the two treatment groups. The improved glycemic control with the VLCD appeared to be due to increased insulin secretion, but further research is needed to confirm this.

Type II diabetic subjects lose less weight than their overweight nondiabetic spouses

To determine whether diabetic individuals have more difficulty losing weight than nondiabetic individuals, 12 overweight diabetic subjects (6 men, 6 women) and their overweight nondiabetic spouses were treated together in a behavioral weight-control program. Diabetic and nondiabetic subjects did not differ in age, weight, or percent overweight. Weight losses of nondiabetic spouses were significantly greater than those of diabetic patients (13.4 +/- 1.7 vs. 7.5 +/- 1.4 kg; P less than .01). Differences emerged by wk 5 and became greater over the 20-wk program. Nondiabetic subjects reduced their intake significantly more than diabetics, suggesting that differences in dietary adherence were responsible for the differences in weight loss.

Effects of lithium on the endocrine system: a review

Lithium has been established as a useful drug for the treatment of mood and behavior disorders. In addition to its therapeutic role in psychiatric disease it is important to recognize that it has diverse effects on endocrine function. These include the development of hypothyroidism and goiter in up to 10% of patients. Hyperthyroidism is a rare but reported side effect. Other abnormalities include hypercalcemia, diabetes insipidus, and altered carbohydrate metabolism. Depending on the clinical situation it is usually not necessary to discontinue lithium treatment, but appropriate intervention to correct the resulting endocrine abnormality may be indicated. This review emphasizes that psychiatrists and clinicians caring for patients given lithium need to be aware of the possible endocrine effects of this drug.
