Abstract
This study discussed the adsorption of mixed heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Co2+, Pb2+) and phosphate ions by ten pristine biochars and those with precipitated Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (LDH). The pristine biochars have adsorption capacities of 6.9-13.4 mg/g for Cu2+, 1.1-9.7 mg/g for Co2+, 7.8-20.7 mg/g for Pb2+, and 0.8-4.9 mg/g for PO43-. The LDH-biochars have markedly increased adsorption capacities of 20.4-25.8 mg/g for Cu2+, 8.6-15.0 mg/g for Co2+, 26.5-40.4 mg/g for Pb2+ with mixed metal ions, and 13.0-21.8 mg/g for PO43-. Part of the Mg ions but Al ions are released from the LDH-biochars during adsorption, counting less than 7.2% of the adsorbed ions. The pristine biochars have specific adsorption sites for Cu2+ and Co2+, separate Pb2+ sites related to ether groups on biochar, and areal-dependent sites for PO43-. There is no universal adsorption mechanism corresponding to mixed metal ion adsorption for individual pristine biochar involving different contributions of C-O-C, C-O-H, and CO groups and graphitic-N, pyrrolic-N, and pyridine-N groups. The LDH complexes with hydroxyl and carbonyl groups of biochar, and the LDH interacts with biochar's ether groups, which contributes to metal adsorption, against the conception that the biochar is merely a carrier of LDH as adsorbents.

Abstract
Biochar is an eco-friendly, low-cost, and carbon-rich material. This study synthesized the biochars from three agricultural wastes, pinecone, white popinac, and sugarcane bagasse, and then modified them by manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) co-precipitation. These biochars were applied as adsorbents for the removal of Cu(II) ions from water. All three different MnFe2O4-biochars have similar adsorption performances: rapid adsorption kinetics with equilibrium being reached within 5 hr of contact and significantly enhanced adsorption capacities of Cu(II) ions from water. The principal adsorption mechanisms were identified as complexation reactions, contributed by the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups by pristine biochars and by the Mn-O and Fe-O groups for all three MnFe2O4-biochars. The MnFe2O4-biochars can be reused for three cycles, with the maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II) of the regenerated biochars declining with the loss of precipitated MnFe2O4.

Abstract
This study synthesized nine biochars from different feedstocks and chemically modified their surfaces using MnFe2O4 precipitation at pH 11 (MnFe2O4-biochars). The maximum adsorption quantities (qmax) of Cu(II) at pH 6 and 25 °C for pristine biochars based on Langmuir model ranged 10.4-23.6 mg/g and for MnFe2O4-biochars, 32.7-43.1 mg/g, with enhancement from 65.6% (bamboo biochar) to 246% (white popinac biochar). Type-wide comparison shows no correlation between surface area of pristine or MnFe2O4-biochars on the adsorption performance. Conversely, the carboxyl groups on the nine biochar surfaces have contributed to Cu(II) adsorption. The type-dependence for qmax of different MnFe2O4-biochars becomes insignificant, confirming the role of biochars being principally an oxide carrier instead of an adsorbent.

Abstract
In this study, through simulation and experimental verification, we proposed a novel hydrocyclone in which a tubular ceramic membrane passed through the overflow outlet to the underflow outlet. The centers of overflow and underflow outlets were tubular membranes equipped with an exit of outside-in filtration, and the overflow the underflow outlets were shaped into annular (donut shape) exits. Thus, this novel hydrocyclone has three outlets, namely the overflow dilute liquid, the underflow concentrated liquid, and clear filtrate. This system enabled higher dilution of hydrocyclone overflow concentration than that in the traditional system. Furthermore, underflow was more concentrated, and we obtained a clear filtrate. Therefore, this device can simultaneously perform classification and filtration, which is valuable for special liquid recycling. For instance, in wafer cutting fluid recovery in solar energy processes, the fluid with more silicon can function as the overflow, the fluid with more silicon carbide can function as the underflow, and the polyethylene glycol (PEG) organic solvent can function as the clear filtrate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish macrophage iron overload model in vitro by co-culture macrophages with iron, and to explore the effect of iron overload on cell reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the impact of ROS on macrophages. METHOD Iron overload group were treated with different concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 μmol/L respectively) of ferric ammonium citrate (FAC). The control group was the group of macrophages without FAC treatment. We detected the number and state of cells, metabolic activity, the change of phagocytosis, the levels of ROS and reactive nitrogen, and changes of related oxidative stress signaling pathways in different groups. Changes in the above indexes were detected after application of deferasirox (DFX) to remove iron and the antioxidant N -acetylcysteine (NAC) to clear excess oxidative stress. RESULTS (1)The levels of labile iron pool (LIP) in macrophages co-cultivated with iron was increased with the increase of iron concentration in a dose-dependent manner. The LIP levels was the highest in the macrophages treated with 80 μmol/L. (2)The increase of FAC concentration, the metabolic activity of macrophages in the 5 FAC-treated groups decreased to 51.58%, 40.98%, 16.23%, 3.46%, and 0.05% of the activity level of the control group (all P< 0.05). The group with the metabolic activity decreased to 16.23% (20 μmol/L) was selected as the iron overload group for the following experiments. (3)Compared with the control group, the number of macrophages in the iron overload group reduced to 32.80% (P<0.05), and the state of cells changed from adherence to partial suspension. The phagocytosis of macrophages in the iron overload group reduced to 20.40% of the control group (P<0.05). (4)Our further experiment showed that the levels of ROS and the activity nitrogen in the iron overload group increased by 7.71-and 1.45-fold compared with the control group (both P<0.05). The RT-PCR showed up-regulated mRNA expression of genes related with ROS production, i. e. nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 4 (NOX 4) gene related with ROS production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene related with reactive nitrogen production, down-regulated mRNA expression of glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) gene which participated in ROS clearance. Moreover, mRNA expression of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) gene involved in oxidative stress signaling pathway in the iron overload group was up-regulated, while fork head protein O3 (FOXO3) which regulated oxidative stress through negative feedback showed a down-regulation level of mRNA expression compared with the control group. (5)After iron chelation and antioxidant treatment, the above-mentioned damage in the iron overload group were partially reversed. CONCLUSIONS The damages of iron overload on macrophages may be mediated by inducing oxidative stress and activating oxidative stress signaling pathways. Our established model provides a method to explore the mechanism of iron overload on macrophage, and may shed some new light on possible therapeutic target in treating iron overload patients.

Abstract
The inverse association of the functional ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) S18Y variant with Parkinson's disease (PD) among Caucasian populations has been debated. We conducted a large-scale analysis to investigate the age-of-onset effect of the UCHL1 variant in PD among ethnic Chinese. Individual data sets from 5 centers comprising a total of 4088 study subjects were analyzed. In the univariate analysis, only data from 1 center showed a trend towards a protective effect among young subjects. However, in the combined analysis, no significant association between the UCHL1 variant and PD was detected (A allele frequency 0.531 vs. 0.528, p=0.87, OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.92-1.1). Among subjects less than 60 years old, the OR is 0.99 (95% CI 0.84-1.16, p=0.88). A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that family history, UCHL1 variant and the interaction of UCHL1 variant and age at onset (p=0.816) were not significantly associated with PD.

Abstract
This paper numerically evaluates the hydrodynamic drag force exerted on two highly porous spheres moving steadily along their centerline through a quiescent Newtonian fluid over a Reynolds number ranging from 0.1 to 40. At creeping-flow limit, the drag forces exerted on both spheres were approximately identical. At higher Reynolds numbers the drag force on the leading sphere (sphere #1) was higher than the following sphere (sphere #2), revealing the shading effects produced by sphere #1 on sphere #2. At dimensionless diameter beta<2 (beta=d(f)/2k(0.5), d(f) and k are sphere diameter and interior permeability, respectively), the spheres can be regarded as "no-spheres" limit. At increasing beta for both spheres, the drag force on sphere #2 was increased because of the more difficult advective flow through its interior, and at the same time the drag was reduced owing to the stronger wake flow produced by the denser sphere #1. The competition between these two effects leads to complicated dependence of drag force on sphere #2 on beta value. These effects were minimal when beta became low.

Abstract
We studied the expanded CAG repeat and adjacent CCG repeat in 53 Huntington's disease (HD) patients and 172 unrelated normal subjects matched to the patients for ethnic origin. The range of the CAG repeat varied from 38 to 109 in the HD patients and from 10 to 29 in the control group. A significant negative correlation was found between the age at onset and the CAG expansion, with no significant influence of the adjacent CCG repeat on the age at onset by multiple regression analysis. Allelic association using CCG repeat and 2 flanking dinucleotide repeat markers within 150 kb of the HD gene revealed linkage disequilibrium for 2 of 3 markers. Haplotype analysis of 24 HD families using these markers identified 3 major haplotypes underlying 87.5% of HD chromosomes. The data suggested frequent haplotypes in the Taiwanese population on which one or more mutational events leading to the disease occurred.

Abstract
A one-dimensional model for the spatio-temporal variation of solids fraction in the blanket considering both the hydrodynamic dispersion and the convection effects was proposed in this study. The model equation was a wave equation whose solution presented shock-wave like characteristic. The model output predicted that the distribution of the solids fraction in the blanket would, firstly, evolve to a uniform distribution at a lower solids fraction. Afterward, the blanket would compact itself to another uniform distribution at a higher solids fraction. Experimental works with synthetic raw water coagulated with PACl suspended in a lab-scale suspended bed confirmed the theoretical predictions. The solids flux plot was constructed with underdosed, optimal and overdosed suspensions. Change in coagulant dose would affect the blanket height and the response time. The solids flux curve was shifted accordingly. The "optimal' operational condition for the upflow suspended bed that produced the lowest effluent turbidity was identified and discussed.

Abstract
Cytochrome p450IIE1 (CYP2E1), an ethanol-inducible cytochrome p450 enzyme, is expressed in the basal ganglia and is probably involved in the activation of neurotoxicants, producing free radical metabolites and resulting in oxidative stress. To examine the association between CYP2E1 polymorphism and the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD), we performed a case-control study on a large population of Taiwanese PD patients, focusing especially on early-onset PD patients (onset at, or before, the age of 50). Two hundred and thirty-four PD patients and 251 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited. A much higher frequency of the uncommon c2 allele was seen in our control subjects than in Caucasians (0.23 vs. 0.02). There were no significant differences between PD patients and controls in the distribution of either allelic or genotype frequencies. Our results suggest that CYP2E1 is not a major or independent determinant in the occurrence of PD in Taiwanese.

Abstract
In this work, the structure of two kaolin sludges and a waste activated sludge are investigated using both light-scattering and free-settling methods. Fractal dimensions estimated by the light-scattering and free-settling techniques (D(S) and D(F) respectively) differ significantly and support the hypothesis that naturally occurring aggregates possess a multilevel structure. A two-level floc structural model comprised of (i) a primary floc (of fractal dimension D(S)) consisting of primary particles and (ii) a secondary floc (of fractal dimension D(F)) consisting of the microflocs is proposed to interpret the experimental findings. The structural changes of sludge flocs before and after cationic flocculation are interpreted using the proposed two-level model.

This work monitored advection flow through a floc by bubble tracking. Close examination of the motion of a swarm of hydrogen bubbles that passed over a free-falling floc allowed the extent of advection flow to be estimated at 53% for the original activated sludge floc, and 12% for the flocculated floc. The interior permeability of the sludge flocs was estimated from this information. The fluid force exerted on the falling floc was also considered.

Abstract
Works in literature proposed the use of the rheological properties of wastewater sludges as an index for conditioner assessment and control. We demonstrated in this work, on the contrary, that one could not justify the consistency of the commonly used rheological characteristics of the sewage sludge samples taken from the same site but at different dates. A physically relevant index was proposed instead for describing the total network strength, which was hypothesized to correlate the dewatering efficiency of flocculated sludge. Based on this index, the network of a sludge was demonstrated to be largely destroyed after shearing, while the relaxation in an unbound environment or mild pouring over action could partially reinstall the structure. Moreover, a uniform shear rate field could produce network of greater strength when compared with that conditioned in a stirred tank.

Abstract
This work numerically investigates the hydrodynamic drag force exerted on a porous spheroid floc moving steadily through a quiescent Newtonian fluid over a wide range of the Reynolds number. The flow patterns for a highly porous spheroid moving at an elevated Reynolds number are basically the same as those at a low Reynolds number, which extends the applicable range of a creeping-flow based correlation to the higher Reynolds number regime. The shape effect becomes more prominent as the spheroid becomes more porous. Using the equivalent diameter, defined as the geometric mean diameter of the principal axes, leads to a universal correlation relating to the drag force, aspect ratio, and interior permeability. In addition, free-settling experiments are performed to estimate how the non-spherical shape affects the three sludge samples. The possible errors in data reduction for the free-settling test are attributed to the a/b ratio and the internal permeability. The errors range from 16-34% for a/b = 0.6-2.0.

Abstract
Breaking down the time limit constraints for conventional compression-permeation (C-P) cell test, this work has, for the first time, experimentally evaluated the cake characteristics of viable waste-activated sludge subject to polyelectrolyte flocculation and to freeze/thaw treatment under a pressure range of 25-200 kPa. There exists a threshold pressure exceeding which the cake structure would significantly deteriorate. Also, the present biological sludge is a "super-compactible" sludge, whose compactibility is greater than most data ever reported in open literature. The information presented herein has implications to filter design/operation and can be used as a reference data set for examining the existing filtration theories.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Reports suggest that catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT(L/L)) (Val(158)/Met) and monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) intron 13 genotype polymorphism is associated with PD. To understand the ethnicity-specific effects of genetic polymorphism, we performed a case-control study of the association between PD susceptibility and polymorphism of MAOB and COMT, both separately and in combination, in Taiwanese. METHODS Two hundred twenty-four patients with PD and 197 controls, matched for age, sex, and birthplace, were recruited. MAOB and COMT polymorphism genotyping was performed by using PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses. chi(2), OR, and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare differences in allelic frequencies and genotypes. RESULTS The MAOB G genotype (G in men and G:/G in women) was associated with a 2.07-fold increased relative risk of PD. COMT polymorphism, considered alone, showed no correlation with PD risk; however, a significant synergistic enhancement was found in PD patients harboring both the COMT(L) and MAOB G genotypes. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that, in Taiwanese, PD risk is associated with MAOB G intron 13 polymorphism, and this association is augmented in the presence of the COMT(L) genotype, indicating an interaction of these two dopamine-metabolizing enzymes in the pathogenesis of sporadic PD. However, the relatively low frequencies of these combined genotypes in our study necessitates confirmation with a larger sample size.

Abstract
l-Deprenyl (Selegiline), a selective and irreversible type B monoamine oxidase inhibitor, has been used as an adjunct to levodopa therapy in Parkinson's disease. Recently, it is proposed as a putative neuroprotective agent in delaying the progression of cell death based on its capability of reducing the oxidative stress derived from the MAO-B dependent metabolism of dopamine, and blocking the development of MPTP-parkinsonism. However, a variety of experimental models suggest that l-deprenyl provides neuroprotection through multiple modes of mechanism other than the inhibition of MAO-B. We have previously shown that l-deprenyl protects midbrain dopamine neurons from MPP+ toxicity by a novel antioxidant effect. In the present study we examined whether the protection against MPP+ toxicity is also shared by other reversible or irreversible MAO-B inhibitors including (+)-deprenyl, Ro16-6491 and pargyline. Our data show that non of these MAO-B inhibitors changes the dopamine loss in the striatum induced by intranigral injection of MPP+. Our result suggests that l-deprenyl may possess a unique neuroprotective action on nigral neuron against MPP+ toxicity independent of the MAO-B inhibition.

Abstract
Motor fluctuations and abnormal involuntary movements are common complications encountered in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with long-term levodopa therapy. Monitoring of plasma levodopa concentrations and clinical effects has been reported to benefit the management of these complications. However, to our knowledge, there is no data available in Taiwan concerning the correlation between the plasma levodopa levels and motor fluctuations. In this study, we developed the laboratory methodology for plasma levodopa determination by using the aluminum extraction procedure and HPLC-ED. Serial blood samples and motor scores were obtained from 7 PD patients, and the correlation between plasma levodopa levels and motor responses were studied individually. In three patients with wearing-off phenomenon, plasma levodopa concentrations are compatible with the clinical "on" and "off" states. In the other four patients with complex fluctuating responses, their levodopa dosages were adjusted by the results of monitoring. Better motor responses were achieved by optimization of the levodopa pharmacokinetics in these patients. Our preliminary data suggest that simultaneous monitoring of plasma levodopa concentrations and clinical effects might be helpful to improve the therapeutic strategy in some of the parkinsonian patients with fluctuating responses to levodopa.

Abstract
Treatment with 3-(2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)-propyl-1-phosphonic acid (CPP), a potent and competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist, is able to reduce the hypoxia-induced increase in striatal dopamine level by 26% even after the hypoxic insult has occurred. The hypoxia-induced decrease of the striatal 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid level can also be reversed by CPP. This study demonstrates that CPP can antagonize the hypoxia-induced changes in the dopamine metabolism in the striatum of the newborn rat.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study analyzed questionnaire items that address complaints about sleep from the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study, a nationally representative sample of the 3.1 million men and women who served in Vietnam. This study compared the frequency of nightmares and difficulties with sleep onset and sleep maintenance in male Vietnam theater veterans with male Vietnam era veteran and male civilian comparison subjects. It focused on the role of combat exposure, nonsleep posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, comorbid psychiatric and medical disorder, and substance abuse in accounting for different domains of sleep disturbance. METHOD The authors undertook an archival analysis of the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study database using correlations and linear statistical models. RESULTS Frequent nightmares were found exclusively in subjects diagnosed with current PTSD at the time of the survey (15.0%). In the sample of veterans who served in Vietnam (N = 1,167), combat exposure was strongly correlated with frequency of nightmares, moderately correlated with sleep onset insomnia, and weakly correlated with disrupted sleep maintenance. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that in Vietnam theater veterans, 57% of the variance in the frequency of nightmares was accounted for by war zone exposure and non-sleep-related PTSD symptoms. Alcohol abuse, chronic medical illnesses, panic disorder, major depression, and mania did not predict the frequency of nightmares after control for nonsleep PTSD symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Frequent nightmares appear to be virtually specific for PTSD. The nightmare is the domain of sleep disturbance most related to exposure to war zone traumatic stress.

Abstract
The present study clearly demonstrated that l-deprenyl confers a substantial protective effect against MPP+ in the substantia nigra zona compacta in vivo. 32.39. The protection provided by l-deprenyl may not depend on its inhibition of type B monoamine oxidase. A unique antioxidant property of l-deprenyl by suppression of cycotoxic. OH formation and associated oxidative damage induced by MPP+ in the A9 melanized nigral neurons may contribute to the protection against MPP+ toxicity in the nigrostriatal system. The likelihood that l-deprenyl may confer neuroprotection against MPP+ toxicity through antioxidant effect is further strongly supported by our recent data that U-78517F (2-methlaminochromans) a potent inhibitor of ironcatalyzed lipid peroxidation, and DMSO an effective. OH scavenger also protect nigral neurons against MPP(+)-induced severe oxidative injury in the substantia nigra. This putative antioxidant effect of deprenyl may explore another mechanism which may in part contribute to its overt neuroprotection against several toxins, including 6-OHDA, DSP-4, and MPTP, and the possible clinical effects on slowing the neuronal degeneration in early Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disorder and even senescent changes.

Abstract
Intranigral infusion of 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+, 2.1-16.8 nmol) dose-dependently injured nigral neurons as reflected by reduced dopamine levels in the ipsilateral striatum four days after the infusion of this toxic metabolite of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Coadministration of deprenyl (4.2 nmol) with MPP+ into the substantia nigra protected against MPP(+)-induced moderate (20-50%) but not severe (over 70%) nigral injury as reflected in striatal dopamine reductions. However, supplementary treatment with deprenyl (0.25 mg/kg, s.c., twice daily for 4 days) after intranigral infusion of MPP+ significantly rescued nigral neurons from more severe damage caused by a higher MPP+ does (8.4 nmol) manifested by a lesser striatal dopamine decrease (-31%) compared to the non-deprenyl treated group (-70%). Thus, in addition to the blockade of bioactivation of MPTP, deprenyl can protect and/or rescue nigral neurons from MPP(+)-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity. These in vivo data add further evidence to suggest that deprenyl, a putative and clinically unproven neuroprotective agent, may be of value in slowing the progressive nigral degeneration in "early" Parkinson's disease, but may prove to be less so in its terminal stages.

Abstract
Increased nigral iron content in the parkinsonian brain is now well documented and is implicated in the pathogenesis of this movement disorder. Free iron in the pigmented DA-containing neurons catalyze DA autoxidation and Fenton reaction to produce cytotoxic .OH, initiating lipid peroxidation and consequent cell damage. The present results clearly demonstrate that a regional increase in the levels of the "labile iron pool" can result in the degeneration of dopaminergic nigral neurons as reflected by a significant inhibition in the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA and DA depletion. Iron-complex-induced damage of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, might have resulted from a sequence of cytotoxic events including the .OH generation and lipid peroxidation as demonstrated in this study. This free-radical-induced oxidative nigral injury may be a reliable free-radical model for studying parkinsonism and may be relevant to idiopathic Parkinson's disease. This apparent nigral injury stimulated by Fe(2+)-citrate is more severe than that produced by ferric iron and its citrate complex. Moreover, these data indicate that Fe(2+)-citrate is as potent as MPP+ in causing oxidative injury to the substantia nigral neurons. However, the nigral toxicity of MPTP and its congeners are not progressive, while Fe(2+)-citrate complex may produce a progressive degeneration of the nigrostriatal neurons which is similar to the progression of ideopathic Parkinson's disease. Thus, this unique Fe(2+)-citrate complex animal model could be used for studying neuroprotective treatments for retarding or halting the progressive nigrostriatal degeneration caused by free radicals in the iron-rich basal ganglia.

Abstract
The current research has demonstrated that MPP+ can induce lipid peroxidation in the nigrostriatal system of rat in vivo. Antioxidant agent U-78517F and .OH scavenger DMSO may protect against MPP+ toxicity through the inhibition of .OH radical-mediated oxidative injury in the substantia nigra. These findings indicate that the cytotoxic hydroxyl radical generated from dopamine oxidation in the iron-rich basal ganglia may contribute to the mechanism underlying the selective A9 melanized nigral degeneration in MPTP-Parkinsonism and possibly in idiopathic Parkinson's disease. In addition, the present studies also clearly demonstrate that deprenyl can substantially protect dopaminergic neurons against MPP+ toxicity in the substantia nigra zona compacta in vivo. The neuroprotective effect provided by deprenyl may not be the consequence of its inhibition of MAO-B activity or prevention of the uptake of MPP+ by dopaminergic neurons. A unique antioxidant property of deprenyl by suppressing .OH formation and associated oxidative injury induced by MPP+ may contribute to the apparent neuroprotective action. In perspective, this putative antioxidant effect of deprenyl may provide another mechanism to its overt neuroprotective effects against oxygen radical-mediated oxidative injury in some neurotoxic chemicals, such as 6-OHDA and DSP-4, and probably in Alzheimer's disease and senescent changes. Finally, based on the present data, a possible neuroprotective therapeutic window of deprenyl in the treatment of early Parkinson's disease has been proposed. It is suggested that deprenyl should be introduced as early as possible in de novo Parkinsonian patients to achieve its full neuroprotective effect on nigral degeneration. Moreover, a combination of early detection of individuals at risk of developing Parkinson's disease and early intervention of deprenyl and/or other centrally active antioxidants to these patients may provide a new preventive therapeutic strategy in the future, in addition to the current conventional levodopa treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
The in vivo generation of .OH free radicals in specific brain regions can be measured by intracerebral microdialysis perfusion of salicylate, avoiding many of the pitfalls inherent in systemic administration of salicylate. Direct infusion of salicylate into the brain can minimize the hepatic hydroxylation of salicylate and its contribution to brain levels of 2,5-DHBA. Levels of 2,5-DHBA detected in the brain dialysate may reflect the .OH adduct plus some enzymatic hydroxylation of salicylate in the brain. After minimizing the contribution of enzyme and/or blood-borne 2,5-DHBA, the present data demonstrate the validity of the use of 2,3-DHBA and apparently 2,5-DHBA as indices of .OH formation in the brain. Therefore, intracranial microdialysis of salicylic acid and measurement of 2,3-DHBA appears to be a useful .OH trapping procedure for monitoring the time course of .OH generation in the extracellular fluid of the brain. These results indicate that nonenzymatic and/or enzymatic oxidation of the dopamine released by MPTP analogues in the extracellular fluid may play a key role in the generation of .OH free radicals in the iron-rich basal ganglia. Moreover, a site-specific generation of cytotoxic .OH free radicals and quinone/semiquinone radicals in the striatum may cause the observed lipid peroxidation, calcium overload, and retrograde degeneration of nigrostriatal neurons. This free-radical-induced nigral injury can be suppressed by antioxidants (i.e., U-78517F, DMSO, and deprenyl) and possibly hypothermia as well. In the future, this in vivo detection of .OH generation may be useful in answering some of the fundamental questions concerning the relevance of oxidants and antioxidants in neurodegenerative disorders during aging. It could also pave the way for the research and development of novel neuroprotective antioxidants and strategies for the early or preventive treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (Wu et al., this issue), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, head trauma, and possibly Alzheimer's cognitive dysfunction as well. In conclusion, this in vivo free-radical trapping procedure provides evidence to support a current working hypothesis that a site-specific formation of cytotoxic .OH free radicals in the basal ganglia may be one of the neurotoxic mechanisms underlying nigrostriatal degeneration and Parkinsonism caused by the dopaminergic neurotoxin MPTP. Abstract
A prospective randomized study to evaluate the effect of adjuvant intrapleural OK-432 immunotherapy after resection of lung tumor was conducted in 93 patients with primary lung cancer. Among them, 46 patients had had intrapleural OK-432 injection, 47 had not. In the meantime, serial measurements of serum immunosuppressive acidic protein, of serum interleukin-2 receptor and of the subpopulation of the peripheral blood cells and lymphocytes were performed in all these patients. Patient characteristics in these two groups (sex, age, histological type, pathological stage, type of operation, and performance status) were compatible. The results showed that adjuvant intrapleural OK-432 injection after resection had no beneficial effect on a patient's survival time. Patients who received intrapleural OK-432, had an increase in blood leukocytes, granulocytes and monocytes and serum immunosuppressive acidic protein level. But the cell numbers of total T cells, suppressor/cytoxic cells, helper/inducer cells and natural killer cells of peripheral blood were decreased in the OK-432 positive group. Over half of the patients had transient 1- or 2-day febrile reactions after intrapleural OK-432 injection. It was concluded that neither clinical observation nor immunological monitoring of peripheral blood could demonstrate a beneficial effect from intrapleural OK-432 immunotherapy after complete resection of the tumor.

Abstract
This article reviews the recent surgical treatment of patients with pleuropulmonary tuberculosis in the northern Taiwan area. With the advent of effective chemotherapeutic agents and fewer failed medical treatments, the need for surgery has decreased. During the period 1985 to 1991, a total of 62 patients in the northern Taiwan area received surgical treatment for lesions or complications associated with pleuropulmonary tuberculosis. In the majority of cases, patients underwent operations for undiagnosed tumors. Other indications for surgery included tuberculosis cavity with aspergilloma, localized cavity or anatomic residue with a positive acid fast bacilli smear, complications with altered anatomy secondary to tuberculosis and chronic tuberculous empyema. The appropriate selection of patients for surgical intervention should ensure satisfactory surgical results. Surgery continues to play a vital role in the management of certain patients with pleuropulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract
1. Intracerebral injection of the oxidative metabolite of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridine (MPP+), into the substantia nigra of adult rats resulted in a lesion at the injection site. 2. Using autoradiography, we localized specific [125I]CGP 42112 binding that was not recognized by angiotensin II or angiotensin II AT1 or AT2 receptor-selective ligands. 3. Our results suggest that [125I]CGP 42112 may be binding to activated microglia that appear at the lesion site.

Abstract
A 47-year-old Taiwanese man with a long-standing history of left chronic tuberculous empyema complained of having a painful swelling over the left lower chest wall for a four-month period. Suspecting acute exaggeration of infection, open drainage was performed. Multiple yellow-grayish, fragile substances protruding from the calcified empyema wall were found. Pathologic studies revealed a diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and removal of the tumors en bloc, with the empyema peel and part of the chest wall, was performed two weeks later. The postoperative course was smooth, but the patient refused further chemotherapy. He was well, without local recurrence or metastasis after nine months of follow-up. Malignant lymphoma developing from long-standing pyothorax is very rare, and has been reported only in Japanese series. The relationship between chronic pyothorax and the subsequent development of malignant lymphoma is discussed and the literature is reviewed.

Abstract
Using a modified microdialysis procedure, we confirmed that intrastriatal administration of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+) induced a sustained overflow of dopamine accompanied by increased formation of hydroxyl free radicals (.OH) as reflected by salicylate hydroxylation. Pretreatment with l-deprenyl (selegiline 60 pmol, intrastriatal perfusion) significantly decreased the .OH formation elicited by MPP+ (75 nmol). There was a small decrease of dopamine efflux and an insignificant change of the ratio of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC)/dopamine following l-deprenyl pretreatment. These in vivo findings support prior in vitro data that an unique antioxidant property of l-deprenyl may be independent of its inhibition of type B monoamine oxidase. In addition, intranigral co-administration of l-deprenyl (4.2 nmol) with MPP+ (4.2 nmol) completely protected nigral neurons from probable oxidative injuries induced by MPP+ (4.2 nmol), as reflected by a near 50% loss of striatal dopamine ipsilateral to the side of infusion of drug into the substantia nigra. This apparent neuroprotective effect of l-deprenyl on midbrain nigral neurons was also confirmed by histological findings. The present in vivo data clearly demonstrate that l-deprenyl can protect nigral neurons against dopamine neurotoxicity produced by MPP+, as suggested by an earlier in vitro study. Thus, l-deprenyl can preserve the function of MPP(+)-damaged nigral neurons perhaps by its apparent antioxidant property in addition to its blockade of the bioactivation of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) to toxic pyridinium metabolites by type B monoamine oxidase.

Abstract
The surgical experiences of intrathoracic esophageal perforation in 17 consecutive cases seen during the last eight years are reviewed. Using a rational approach to this critical condition, the mortality and morbidity rates were lower than before. For acute perforation in a corrosive-injured esophagus, subtotal esophagectomy by eversion stripping was an effective procedure for life saving. For acute perforation of a normal or chronic fibrotic but functional esophagus, early primary repair was usually successful for healing. For chronic esophageal perforation, usually complicated by mediastinal abscess or purulent pleural effusion, an adequate local drainage or supplemented with a newly designed, temporary diversion procedure for drainage of saliva and gastric acid was recommended.

Abstract
We studied the risk factors that influence the occurrence of response fluctuations and dyskinesias in 194 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). These factors included age at onset, disease severity at levodopa initiation, duration of illness prior to levodopa therapy and the daily dose of levodopa at the end of study. The first three were fixed covariates and the last one was time-dependent. Patients with age onset before 50 years showed a higher risk of developing response fluctuations (RF) and dyskinesias in univariate analysis. We estimated the combined effects of these covariates through multivariate analysis and found that the age at onset was the sole factor related to the incidence of both complications. Additionally, it was the only variable that could enter the predictive model of stepwise regression. Our observation suggested that age at onset determined the occurrence of RF and dyskinesias. Patients with younger age at onset had higher risk of developing these adverse effects.

Abstract
A 23 year old male developed abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting several hours after poisoning with acute triphenyltin intoxication in a suicide attempt. Severe ataxia, dysmetria, nystagmus, and blurring of vision soon supervened. Disturbance of consciousness and confusion developed 12 days later and lasted for two months. A delayed sensorimotor polyneuropathy was shown by electrophysiological studies to be due to axonal degeneration and demyelination. The neuropathy rapidly recovered after consciousness was regained.
