Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric robotic-assisted surgeries have increased in recent years; however, guidance documents are still lacking. This study aimed to develop evidence-based recommendations, or best practice statements when evidence is lacking or inadequate, to assist surgical teams internationally. METHODS A joint consensus taskforce of anesthesiologists and surgeons from the Italian Society of Pediatric and Neonatal Anesthesia and Intensive Care (SARNePI) and the Italian Society of Pediatric Surgery (SICP) have identified critical areas and reviewed the available evidence. The taskforce comprised 21 experts representing the fields of anesthesia (n = 11) and surgery (n = 10) from clinical centers performing pediatric robotic surgery in the Italian cities of Ancona, Bologna, Milan, Naples, Padua, Pavia, Perugia, Rome, Siena, and Verona. Between December 2020 and September 2021, three meetings, two Delphi rounds, and a final consensus conference took place. RESULTS During the first planning meeting, the panel agreed on the specific objectives, the definitions to apply, and precise methodology. The project was structured into three subtopics: (i) preoperative patient assessment and preparation; (ii) intraoperative management (surgical and anesthesiologic); and (iii) postoperative procedures. Within these phases, the panel agreed to address a total of 18 relevant areas, which spanned preoperative patient assessment and patient selection, anesthesiology, critical care medicine, respiratory care, prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and pain management. CONCLUSION Collaboration among surgeons and anesthesiologists will be increasingly important for achieving safe and effective RAS procedures. These recommendations will provide a review for those who already have relevant experience and should be particularly useful for those starting a new program.

Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a potential complication in surgical procedures, mainly because clean/contaminated surgery involves organs that are normally colonized by bacteria. Dental, maxillo-facial and ear-nose-throat (ENT) surgeries are among those that carry a risk of SSIs because the mouth and the first respiratory tracts are normally colonized by a bacterial flora. The aim of this consensus document was to provide clinicians with recommendations on surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis in neonates (<28 days of chronological age) and pediatric patients (within the age range of 29 days−18 years) undergoing dental, maxillo-facial or ENT surgical procedures. These included: (1) dental surgery; (2) maxilla-facial surgery following trauma with fracture; (3) temporo-mandibular surgery; (4) cleft palate and cleft lip repair; (5) ear surgery; (6) endoscopic paranasal cavity surgery and septoplasty; (7) clean head and neck surgery; (8) clean/contaminated head and neck surgery and (9) tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Due to the lack of pediatric data for the majority of dental, maxillo-facial and ENT surgeries and the fact that the recommendations for adults are currently used, there is a need for ad hoc studies to be rapidly planned for the most deficient areas. This seems even more urgent for interventions such as those involving the first airways since the different composition of the respiratory microbiota in children compared to adults implies the possibility that surgical antibiotic prophylaxis schemes that are ideal for adults may not be equally effective in children.

Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a potential complication in any type of surgery and can occur up to one year after the procedure in the case of implant placement. In the field of orthopedic and hand surgery, the rate of SSIs is a relevant issue, considering the need for the placement of synthesis devices and the type of some interventions (e.g., exposed fractures). This work aims to provide guidance on the management of peri-operative antibiotic prophylaxis for the pediatric and neonatal population undergoing orthopedic and hand surgery in order to standardize the management of patients and to reduce, on the one hand, the risk of SSI and, on the other, the development of antimicrobial resistance. The following scenarios were considered: (1) bloodless fracture reduction; (2) reduction of unexposed fracture and grade I and II exposed fracture; (3) reduction of grade III exposed fracture or traumatic amputation; (4) cruel fracture reduction with percutaneous synthesis; (5) non-traumatic amputation; (6) emergency intact skin trauma surgery and elective surgery without synthetic media placement; (7) elective orthopedic surgery with prosthetic and/or synthetic media placement and spinal surgery; (8) clean elective hand surgery with and without bone involvement, without use of synthetic means; (9) surgery of the hand on an elective basis with bone involvement and/or with use of synthetic means. This manuscript has been made possible by the multidisciplinary contribution of experts belonging to the most important Italian scientific societies and represents, in our opinion, the most complete and up-to-date collection of recommendations regarding the behavior to be adopted in the peri-operative setting in neonatal and pediatric orthopedic and hand surgery. The specific scenarios developed are aimed at guiding the healthcare professional in practice to ensure the better and standardized management of neonatal and pediatric patients, together with an easy consultation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noninvasive respiratory support (NIRS) has been diffusely employed outside the intensive care unit (ICU) to face the high request of ventilatory support due to the massive influx of patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) caused by coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19). We sought to summarize the evidence on clinically relevant outcomes in COVID-19 patients supported by NIV outside the ICU. METHODS We searched PUBMED®, EMBASE®, and the Cochrane Controlled Clinical trials register, along with medRxiv and bioRxiv repositories for pre-prints, for observational studies and randomized controlled trials, from inception to the end of February 2021. Two authors independently selected the investigations according to the following criteria: (1) observational study or randomized clinical trials enrolling ≥ 50 hospitalized patients undergoing NIRS outside the ICU, (2) laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, and (3) at least the intra-hospital mortality reported. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines were followed. Data extraction was independently performed by two authors to assess: investigation features, demographics and clinical characteristics, treatments employed, NIRS regulations, and clinical outcomes. Methodological index for nonrandomized studies tool was applied to determine the quality of the enrolled studies. The primary outcome was to assess the overall intra-hospital mortality of patients under NIRS outside the ICU. The secondary outcomes included the proportions intra-hospital mortalities of patients who underwent invasive mechanical ventilation following NIRS failure and of those with 'do-not-intubate' (DNI) orders. RESULTS Seventeen investigations (14 peer-reviewed and 3 pre-prints) were included with a low risk of bias and a high heterogeneity, for a total of 3377 patients. The overall intra-hospital mortality of patients receiving NIRS outside the ICU was 36% [30-41%]. 26% [21-30%] of the patients failed NIRS and required intubation, with an intra-hospital mortality rising to 45% [36-54%]. 23% [15-32%] of the patients received DNI orders with an intra-hospital mortality of 72% [65-78%]. Oxygenation on admission was the main source of between-study heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS During COVID-19 outbreak, delivering NIRS outside the ICU revealed as a feasible strategy to cope with the massive demand of ventilatory assistance. Abstract
Children with symptoms of hypotonia (reduction of postural tone of lower limbs and trunk with or without changes in phasic tone) are frequently anaesthetized for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. This review outlines the underlying causes and classifications, and the anaesthesiologic pre- and peri-operative management of hypotonic children. Hypotonia may have a large range of aetiologies that be categorized into central and/or peripheral hypotonia. A multidisciplinary approach towards the (differential) diagnosis of the underlying cause of the symptoms in cooperation with a paediatrician and/or paediatric neurologist is emphasized. Anaesthetic management involves the anticipation of an increased risk in difficult airway management because of macroglossia, reduced mouth opening, obesity and limited neck mobility, which increases with age. There are no specific restrictions towards the use of intravenous or inhalational anaesthetics. Short acting opioids and hypnotics, avoiding neuromuscular blockade, and locoregional techniques are preferred. Most patients are sensitive to the cardiac and depressive effects of anaesthetics and all dystrophic myopathies are considered at risk of malignant hyperthermia. Depolarizing neuromuscular blockers are contraindicated. The use of a peripheral nerve stimulator is recommended to detect the severity of muscle relaxation before extubating. Accurate control and management of IV fluids, electrolytes and temperature is mandatory. Adequate postoperative pain treatment is essential to limit stress and metabolic alteration. Preferably a locoregional technique is used to reduce the increased risk of respiratory depression. A multidisciplinary preoperative approach taking into account the differential diagnosis of the underlying disease of the floppy child is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is currently rare in children and they seem to have a milder disease course and better prognosis than adults. However, SARS-Cov-2 pandemic has indirectly caused problems in pediatric medical assistance. In view of this we wanted to draw a picture of what happened during health emergency and analyze future prospects for restarting. METHODS We involved the Italian pediatric scientific societies institutionally collected in the Italian Federation of Associations and Scientific Societies of the Pediatric Area (FIARPED); We sent a questionnaire to all scientific societies about the pediatric care activity during the COVID-19 emergency and future perspectives for the phase of post-containment. RESULTS The analysis of the questionnaires showed significant decrease of:admission, outpatient visits and specialist consultancy activities during the COVID-19 emergency, primarily linked to the fear of infection. Instead it was increased the serious degree of diseases admitted. Most of scientific societies maintained the relationship with chronic patients through some form of telemedicine, reporting a strong positive opinion about this modality. Finally showed the need to give life a new approach for hospitalizations and outpatient visits through a greater use of telemedicine, educational programs on families and a more decisive role of family pediatricians. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlighted many aspects that can be improved in pediatric care. We think that It will be necessary a new shared strategy to improve the management and continuity of care for pediatric patients, primarily developing a network of collaboration between families, family pediatrician and hospitals and by enhancing the use of new methods of telecommunications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is the main cause of morbidity and mortality for pregnant women. Administrative databases are useful sources of information for the assessment of PPH and related outcomes, once the corresponding ICD-9-CM code is validated. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the accuracy of the ICD-9-CM code related to PPH. MATERIAL AND METHODS Source of the data was the Regional Healthcare Database of the Umbria Region. The population of interest were women with at least 20 weeks of gestation that delivered in any hospital in the Umbria Region during 2012-2016. Cases of interest were identified using the ICD-9-CM 666.x code. For validation purposes, both cases (women who delivered and developed PPH) and non-cases (women who delivered without occurrence of PPH) were considered and algorithms proposed. The basic criterion used for the validity of ICD-9-CM codes was the presence of bleeding ≥500 ml. Additional criteria based on values of haemoglobin or transfusion of red blood cells were considered. Sensitivity, specificity and predictive values were calculated. RESULTS Medical charts of 422 cases and 200 non-cases were examined. Accuracy results for code 666.x related to the presence of bleeding ≥500 ml were: sensitivity 97% (95% CI, 96-99%), specificity 70% (65-76%), positive predictive value (PPV) 79% (76-82%) and negative predictive value (NPV) 95% (91-97%). The best algorithm was the one that, in addition to the basic criterion, considered both the haemoglobin values and red blood cell transfusion: sensitivity 93% (90-95%), specificity 85% (80-90%), PPV 92% (89-94%) and NPV 86% (81-90%). ICD-9 subcodes showed a higher specificity and PPV for immediate bleeding (666.0, 666.1) than delayed or secondary haemorrhage (666.2). CONCLUSIONS The accuracy data from the present study confirm that the Regional Healthcare Database of the Umbria Region can be used as a reliable source for the evaluation of epidemiological studies relating to PPHs, in order to improve the quality of maternity care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is one of the main causes of mortality and severe maternal morbidity and its incidence is increasing also in Western countries. Aim of this study is to estimate the incidence and the trend of PPH in the Umbrian population using the validated Umbrian health database and to identify possible determinants for the development of PPH. METHODS The source of the data was the regional Healthcare Database of the Umbria Region. The population of interest was represented by women who gave birth in Umbria between 2006 and 2017. The PPH was identified from the hospital data using the ICD-9-CM 666.x codes. Demographic data, principal and secondary diagnoses and data on maternal morbidity and blood component transfusion were collected. The incidence of PPH was calculated taking into account cases of PPH over the total number of births. The determinants of PPH, the associated morbidity and the variation in the severity of the PPH over time have been identified by logistic regression models. RESULTS In Umbria, between 2006 and 2017, 93,403 births were registered (69% by vaginal delivery and 31% by caesarean section) and the rate of caesarean sections decreased by about 4%. The incidence of PPH increased three-fold during this period with an increase (p<0.001) of women with PPH who received transfusions. Regarding the caesarean sections, the PPH trend increased by 53% (p=0.3), while in the vaginal deliveries the PPHs increased by 233% (p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that possible risk factors for the occurrence of PPH are maternal morbidity (OR 22.8, 95% CI 18.5-30.0), twin birth (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.3-3.2) and antepartum haemorrhage (OR 5.7, 95% CI 3.1-10.4). CONCLUSIONS The incidence of PPH has increased in recent years, while the morbidity associated with PPH has remained substantially unchanged. The study identified several risk factors responsible for PPH that can be used in the monitoring of pregnant women and for planning prevention strategies such as Patient Blood Management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to summarize and update the evidence concerning oral iron-based interventions compared to placebo or no iron-based interventions to prevent critical outcomes in pregnancy or treat critical outcomes in the postpartum phase. METHOD Published systematic reviews (Feb 2018) and primary studies (from 2015 to March 2018) retrieved from MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were examined. The AMSTAR (Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews) tool was used to assess the quality of reviews. GRADE was used to rate the quality of the evidence for critical outcomes. RESULTS Antenatal care: Compared to placebo/no treatment, iron-based therapies reduced maternal anemia at term by 59% (seven trials at low risk of bias, RR 0.41, 95% CI 0.23-0.73; I2 = 86%; moderate-quality evidence) and maternal iron deficiency anemia by 67% (RR 0.33, 95% CI 0.16-0.69; I2 = 49%). There was no evidence of difference between iron-based therapies vs control in terms of side effects (RR 1.42, 95% CI 0.91-2.21), preterm delivery (13 studies: RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.84-1.03; low-quality evidence), low birthweight (RR 0.94, 95% CI 0.79-1.13; low-quality evidence) and infant mortality (RR 0.93, 0.72-1.20; low-quality evidence). POSTNATAL CARE There was insufficient evidence to determine whether iron-based therapies can reduce postpartum anemia. CONCLUSION Iron supplementation is effective in preventing maternal anemia at term but not low birthweight, preterm delivery or infant mortality.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patientblood management (PBM) is defined as the application of evidence-based diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic approaches designed to maintain haemoglobin concentration, optimise haemostasis and minimise blood loss in an effort to improve patient outcome. We propose a protocol for the assessment of the evidence of diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic approaches for the management of relevant outcomes in obstetrics with the aim to create a framework for PBM implementation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic tools will be considered in the gynaecological conditions and obstetrics setting (antenatal care, peripartum care and maternity care). For each condition, (1) clinical questions based on prioritised outcomes will be developed; (2) evidence will be retrieved systematically from electronic medical literature (MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and CINAHL); (3) quality of the reviews will be assessed using the AMSTAR (A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews) checklist; quality of primary intervention studies will be assessed using the risk of bias tool (Cochrane method); quality of diagnostic primary studies will be assessed using QUADAS-2 (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies); (4) the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation method will be applied to rate the quality of the evidence and to develop recommendations. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION For each diagnostic, preventive or therapeutic intervention evaluated, a manuscript comprising the evidence retrieved and the recommendation produced will be provided and published in peer-reviewed journals. Ethical approval is not required.

Abstract
Self-assembly processes are widespread in nature and lie at the heart of many biological and physical phenomena. The characteristics of self-assembly building blocks determine the structures that they form. Two crucial properties are the determinism and boundedness of the self-assembly. The former tells us whether the same set of building blocks always generates the same structure, and the latter whether it grows indefinitely. These properties are highly relevant in the context of protein structures, as the difference between deterministic protein self-assembly and nondeterministic protein aggregation is central to a number of diseases. Here we introduce a graph theoretical approach that can determine the determinism and boundedness for several geometries and dimensionalities of self-assembly more accurately and quickly than conventional methods. We apply this methodology to a previously studied lattice self-assembly model and discuss generalizations to a wide range of other self-assembling systems.

Abstract
The Italian Society of Pediatric Surgery (SICP) together with The Italian Society of Pediatric Anesthesia (SARNePI) through a systematic analysis of the scientific literature, followed by a consensus conference held in Perugia on 2015, have produced some evidence based guidelines on the feasibility of day surgery in relation to different pediatric surgical procedures. The main aspects of the pre-operative assessment, appropriacy of operations and discharge are reported.

Abstract
We investigate general properties of nondeterministic self-assembly with asymmetric interactions, using a computational model and DNA tile assembly experiments. By contrasting symmetric and asymmetric interactions we show that the latter can lead to self-limiting cluster growth. Furthermore, by adjusting the relative abundance of self-assembly particles in a two-particle mixture, we are able to tune the final sizes of these clusters. We show that this is a fundamental property of asymmetric interactions, which has potential applications in bioengineering, and provides insights into the study of diseases caused by protein aggregation.

Abstract
Self-assembly is ubiquitous in nature, particularly in biology, where it underlies the formation of protein quaternary structure and protein aggregation. Quaternary structure assembles deterministically and performs a wide range of important functions in the cell, whereas protein aggregation is the hallmark of a number of diseases and represents a nondeterministic self-assembly process. Here we build on previous work on a lattice model of deterministic self-assembly to investigate nondeterministic self-assembly of single lattice tiles and mixtures of two tiles at varying relative concentrations. Despite limiting the simplicity of the model to two interface types, which results in 13 topologically distinct single tiles and 106 topologically distinct sets of two tiles, we observe a wide variety of concentration-dependent behaviors. Several two-tile sets display critical behaviors in the form of a sharp transition from bound to unbound structures as the relative concentration of one tile to another increases. Other sets exhibit gradual monotonic changes in structural density, or nonmonotonic changes, while again others show no concentration dependence at all. We catalog this extensive range of behaviors and present a model that provides a reasonably good estimate of the critical concentrations for a subset of the critical transitions. In addition, we show that the structures resulting from these tile sets are fractal, with one of two different fractal dimensions.

Abstract
The authors report their experience in laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernias in children. From May 2010 to November 2013, 122 patients with inguinal hernia underwent laparoscopic herniorrhaphy (92 males and 30 females). Telescope used was 5 mm, while trocars for the operative instruments were 3 or 2 mm. After introducing the camera at the umbilical level and trocars in triangulation, a 4-0 nonabsorbable monofilament suture was inserted directly through the abdominal wall. The internal inguinal ring was then closed by N or double N suture. All operations were performed in one-day surgery setting. In the case of association of inguinal and umbilical hernia an original technique was performed for positioning and fixing the umbilical trocar and for the primary closure of the abdominal wall defect. The postoperative follow-up consisted of outpatient visits at 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months. The mean age of patients was 38.5 months. Of all patients, 26 were also suffering from umbilical hernia (19 males and 7 females). A total of 160 herniorrhaphies were performed; 84 were unilateral (66 inguinal hernia, 18 inguinal hernia associated with umbilical hernia), 38 bilateral (30 inguinal hernia, 8 inguinal hernia associated with umbilical hernia). Nine of 122 patients (6 males and 3 females) were operated in emergency for incarcerated hernia. A pre-operative diagnosis of unilateral inguinal hernia was performed in 106 cases. Of these patients, laparoscopy revealed a controlateral open internal inguinal ring in 22 cases (20.7%). The mean operative time was 29.9±15.9 min for the monolateral herniorrhaphies, while in case of bilateral repair the mean operative time was 41.5±10.4 min. The mean operative time for the repair of unilateral inguinal hernia associated with umbilical hernia was 30.1±7.4 while for the correction of bilateral inguinal hernia associated with umbilical hernia 39.5±10.6 min. There were 3 recurrences (1.8%): 2 cases in unilateral repair and 1 case a unilateral recurrence in a bilateral repair. No other complications were seen. Laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia in children performed in this experience resulted a safe and effective procedure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The preoperative assessment involves the process of evaluating the patient's clinical condition, which is intended to define the physical status classification, eligibility for anesthesia and the risks associated with it, thus providing elements to select the most appropriate and individualized anesthetic plan. The aim of this recommendation was provide a framework reference for the preoperative evaluation assessment of pediatric patients undergoing elective surgery or diagnostic/therapeutic procedures. METHODS We obtained evidence concerning pediatric preoperative evaluation from a systematic search of the electronic databases MEDLINE and Embase between January 1998 and February 2012. We used the format developed by the Italian Center for Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Health Care's scoring system for assessing the level of evidence and strength of recommendations. RESULTS We produce a set of consensus guidelines on the preoperative assessment and on the request for preoperative tests. A review of the existing literature supporting these recommendations is provided. In reaching consensus, emphasis was placed on the level of evidence, clinical relevance and the risk/benefit ratio. CONCLUSION Preoperative evaluation is mandatory before any diagnostic or therapeutic procedure that requires the use of anesthesia or sedation. The systematic prescription of complementary tests in children should be abandoned, and replaced by a selective and rational prescription, based on the patient history and clinical examination performed during the preoperative evaluation.

Abstract
This article describes the clinical history of a patient admitted to the Emergency Room after severe infrascapular pain unaffected by breathing or postural changes. After thoracic CT a type B aortic dissection was diagnosed. On admission to the CCU, the patient's blood pressure was still high (210/120 mmHg). Sodium nitroprusside (1 microg/kg/min drip) was initiated. As blood pressure remained high after 24 h, the infusion rate was increased gradually up to 18 microg/kg/min. In the evening of the following day the patient was transferred to the operating room because acute renal failure (BUN 108 mg/dL, Cr 4.00 mg/dL) occurred and arterial pressure was still high (180/60 mmHg). A thoracic endoprosthesis was then inserted. During this procedure the patient was relaxed and his blood pressure was satisfactory (140/80 mmHg) without drugs. In order to further lower blood pressure and afterload before positioning the second prosthetic segment within the aortic arch, 1 microg/kg/min nitroprusside drip was continued. A few minutes initiation of the drip an abrupt rise in blood pressure (systolic 200 mmHg) was observed, which had to be controlled before continuing the procedure. Increased nitroprusside infusion and repeated boluses of 10 mg urapidil (3-4 boluses with an interval of 15 min) and 30 microg clonidine were unsuccessful. After 15 min with an increased nitroprusside infusion rate, the patient showed psychomotor agitation and O2 his saturation dropped to 91% while arterial pH was 7.2 and lactate concentration was 3.5 mmol/L. Nitroprusside infusion was discontinued, while 0.1 microg/kg/min fenoldopam (started when the patient arrived in the operating room) was continued without improvement. In order to complete the procedure, general anaesthesia with sevflurane (2 MAC) in air (FiO2= 40%) was induced. After successful reduction in blood pressure the procedure was completed. In the postoperative course the patient was admitted to the ICU.

Abstract
Clonidine is effective in treating sevoflurane-induced postanesthesia agitation in children. We conducted a study on 169 children to quantify the risk reduction of clonidine agitation in patients admitted to our day-surgery pediatric clinic. Children were randomly allocated to receive clonidine 2 mug/kg or placebo before general anesthesia with sevoflurane that was also supplemented with a regional or central block. An observer blinded to the anesthetic technique assessed recovery variables and the presence of agitation. Pain and discomfort scores were significantly decreased in the clonidine group; the incidence of agitation was reduced by 57% (P = 0.029) and the incidence of severe agitation by 67% (P = 0.064). Relative risks for developing agitation and severe agitation were 0.43 (95% confidence interval, 0.24-0.78) and 0.32 (0.09-1.17), respectively. Clonidine produces a substantial reduction in the risk of postsevoflurane agitation in children.

Abstract
The Authors report the causal discovery of isolated persistent left superior vena cava (IPLSVC) during a central venous incannulation with a Groshong's catheter, in a patient undergoing bone marrow transplant. After a short introduction about the IPLSVC ontogenesis, they stress the need for fluoroscopy during the central venous incannulation. The Authors conclude that the possibility of angiocardiography has been very helpful, in this case, for diagnosis and prognosis.

Abstract
The Authors have studied three nondepolarizing muscle relaxants widely used: pancuronium v/s atracurium and vecuronium. The Train of Four was used to detect the magnitude of the neuromuscular blockade. The intubation follows 90 minutes after administration of the drugs and for each patient the Authors valued: 1) the T1 and TR values at intubation; 2) the onset-time; 3) the duration of neuromuscular blockade; 4) the recovery time. Furthermore, the degree of neuromuscular blockade was clinically checked both at the time of induction and at recovery. The results of the present study show, in accordance with the literature, that all three drugs tested are capable of obtaining complete muscle relaxation. Atracurium and vecuronium particularly allow an adequate intubation at the adopted doses (0.6 mg/kg and 0.1 mg/kg respectively) with a relatively short onset-time (medium values 136" in the group of atracurium and 146" in the group of vecuronium) and a restoration time faster than pancuronium.
