Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine if fractional excretion of urinary electrolytes and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin could detect different degrees of kidney injury in dogs with naturally occurring acute pancreatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included dogs with acute pancreatitis. Dogs with a history of kidney disease, urinary tract infection, dogs which received potentially nephrotoxic drugs and dogs managed with haemodialysis were excluded. Acute kidney injury was diagnosed if there was an acute onset of clinical signs, haemato-chemical results compatible with acute kidney injury. Students or staff-owned dogs were selected to build the healthy group. RESULTS The study population was composed of 53 dogs: acute pancreatitis with AKI (n=15), acute pancreatitis alone (n=23), and healthy dogs (n=15). In dogs with acute pancreatitis and AKI, all the FEs of urine electrolytes were significantly higher than dogs with acute pancreatitis alone and healthy ones. Dogs with acute pancreatitis alone had higher uNGAL/uCr than healthy dogs (median 54 ng/mg vs. 0.1 ng/mg) and lower compared to AP-AKI patients (54 ng/mg vs 209 ng/mg). Some fractional excretion of electrolytes are increased acute kidney injury dogs, however their role in the early detection of renal injury in acute pancreatitis dogs remains doubtful. On the contrary, urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin had higher concentrations in dogs with acute pancreatitis with or without acute kidney injury compared to healthy controls, suggesting that it may be used as an early marker of renal tubular damage in acute pancreatitis dogs.

Abstract
The clinical application of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) assay is challenging due to its long processing time. However, in 2020 a new automated instrument for veterinary ESR was released and validated. This study sought: (1) to refine the proposed reference range (reference interval, RI) for canine ESR; (2) to compare the ESR values of healthy and sick dogs; and (3) to correlate ESR with other inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, albumin:globulin ratio (A/G), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR); and also (4) to study ESR behavior across illnesses of varying durations. A prospective cohort study of 396 client-owned dogs (n = 120 healthy and n = 276 sick dogs) was conducted. Animals with a full clinical evaluation, complete hematobiochemical profile and a final diagnosis were included. ESR was performed according to manufacturer's instructions using the same 1 mL K3-EDTA tube used for the complete blood count. The RI was established at 1-8 mm/h in 14 min. Sick dogs had a significantly faster ESR (median 10 mm/h) than healthy dogs (median 1 mm/h; P < 0.0001). ESR was positively correlated with NLR (r = 0.36), CRP (r = 0.18) and fibrinogen (r = 0.56) and negatively correlated with A/G (r = -0.37). Dogs with an acute-on-chronic disease had the highest ESR values (median 17 mm/h) compared with either acute (median 11 mm/h; P < 0.001) or chronic diseases (median 7 mm/h; P = 0.001). ESR was confirmed as a reliable canine inflammatory marker, positively correlating with the main inflammatory markers in dogs and significantly different between sick and healthy dogs. The ESR assay appears useful especially in dogs with an acute clinical presentation, with or without an underlying chronic condition.

Abstract
Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic led to the implementation of digital psychiatry (DP) in everyday clinical practice, resulting in the need for a skilled healthcare workforce.
Objectives
Our purpose was to investigate the level of training, knowledge and expertise of young mental health professionals and medical students in DP, as well as exploring their beliefs and experiences in this field.
Methods
An ad hoc cross-sectional survey was designed and administered to Italian medical students, psychiatry trainees, and early career psychiatrists.
Results
Most of the sample declared that the topic of DP was never discussed within their academic training (89.1%), mainly revealing an overall lack of knowledge on DP. Nevertheless, they mostly declared that DP represents a valuable therapeutic tool in mental health (80%) and that the academic background should include a dedicated course/module (54.4%). Moreover, most subjects declared that DP is less effective than in-person interventions (73.2%), despite the emerging evidence that being trained in DP is significantly associated with the belief that digital and in-person interventions are comparable in their effectiveness (p≤0.05).
Conclusions
During the current pandemic, DP represented an ideal response to the need for physical distancing by ensuring the advantage of greater access to care. However, DP interventions are still uncommon, and there remains a certain resistance to their use in mental health care. The lack of formal training during the academic training could be a limiting factor. Therefore, addressing these issues in academic settings could be crucial to spreading this innovative practice also in the post-COVID-19
era.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormalities of the immune system are rarely reported in patients affected by RASopathies. Aim of the current study was to investigate the prevalence of immune system dysfunction in a cohort of patients affected by RASopathies. STUDY DESIGN A group of 69 patients was enrolled: 60 at the Federico II University, Naples, 7 at University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro, 2 at "Scuola Medica Salernitana", Salerno. An age- and sex-matched control group was also enrolled. Autoimmune disorders were investigated according to international consensus criteria. Immune framework was also evaluated by immunoglobulin levels, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD56 lymphocyte subpopulations, autoantibodies levels and panel of inflammatory molecules, in both patients and controls. RESULTS Frequent upper respiratory tract infections were recorded in 2 patients; pneumonia, psoriasis and alopecia in single patients. Low IgA levels were detected in 8/44 patients (18.18%), low CD8 T cells in 13/35 patients (37.14%). Anti-tg and anti-TPO antibodies were detected in 3/24 patients (12.5%), anti r-TSH in 2 cases (8.33%), all in euthyroidism. Serum IgA and CD8 levels were significantly lower in patients than in controls (p 0.00685; p 0.000656 respectively). All tested patients showed increased inflammatory molecules compared to controls. These findings may anticipate the detection of overt autoimmune disease. CONCLUSIONS Patients affected by RASopathies are at risk to develop autoimmune disorders. Routine screening for autoimmunity is recommended in patients with RASopathy.

Abstract
Critical illness-related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI) refers to a lack of adequate corticosteroid activity, which occurs in up to 48% of dogs with sepsis. However, data regarding the occurrence of CIRCI in critically-ill dogs are still scarce. This study aimed to assess: (1) the relationship between CIRCI and clinicopathological inflammatory markers, hypotension and mortality; and (2) the impact of low-dose hydrocortisone treatment on survival. Twenty-one dogs diagnosed with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) were enrolled in a prospective case-control study. All dogs were initially evaluated for adrenal function with an ACTH stimulation test and dogs with Δcortisol ≤ 3 μg/dL were diagnosed with CIRCI. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), white blood cell (WBC), band neutrophils (bNs), c-reactive protein (CRP), and 28-day mortality rate were assessed. Fourteen dogs were treated with low-dose hydrocortisone. The relationships between CIRCI and MAP, WBC, bN, CRP, basal cortisol and mortality were investigated, as was the association between mortality and hydrocortisone treatment. Ten of 21 (48%) dogs were diagnosed with CIRCI. Increased bNs were associated with the presence of CIRCI (P = 0.0075). CRP was higher in dogs with CIRCI (P = 0.02). Fourteen of 21 (66%) dogs died during the study (6/14 had CIRCI). Basal hypercortisolemia (>5 μg/dL) was associated with increased risk of mortality (P = 0.025). Based on our diagnostic criteria, CIRCI occurs frequently in dogs with SIRS and was associated with increased bNs and increased CRP. In this study, CIRCI and low-dose hydrocortisone treatment were not significantly associated with mortality, but basal hypercortisolemia was associated with increased mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To retrospectively assess the rate of oesophagostomy tube-related complications in azotaemic dogs, the influence of the oesophagostomy tube (o-tube) duration and the therapeutic approach (medical versus haemodialysis) on the complication rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records were retrospectively reviewed in order to identify azotaemic dogswhich underwent o-tube placement. o-Tube duration (short-term versus long-term), time of o-tube change, therapeutic approach (medical versus haemodialysis), prevalence of minor (malposition, suture related, inflammation, muco-purulent discharge, abscess) and major (haemorrhage, malposition, obstruction, dislodgement, vomiting of the tube, food coming from the stoma) o-tube-related complications were extracted. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the risk factors for o-tube-related complications. RESULTS Tube-related complications were reported in 74 of 139 dogs (53%). Minor complications were reported in 66 of 74 (89%) and major complications in eight of 74 (11%). In azotaemic dogs, o-tube indwelling time (odds ratio (OR) 1.03; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01 to 1.05), and the use of haemodialysis (OR 40.12; 95% CI 9.18 to 175.20) were risk factors for o-tube-related complications. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The majority of o-tube-related complications were minor, and easily manageable, with no need of hospitalisation, tube-removal or euthanasia. In azotaemic dogs, the use of haemodialysis was strongly associated with a higher risk of o-tube-related complications, possibly as a consequence of the presence of the neck bandage.

Abstract
Aims: To evaluate the association between the C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin (ALB) ratio and survival in dogs with acute pancreatitis and its use as a prognostic marker for survival. Methods: Medical records of a veterinary referral hospital in Italy were retrospectively searched for dogs that were admitted with acute pancreatitis between January 2015 and April 2019, in which the concentrations of CRP and ALB in serum were measured at admission. The CRP/ALB ratio was calculated and the time between admission and discharge or death was recorded. Mortality rates overall and for dogs that died within 2 days of admission were calculated. A univariable Cox proportional hazard model was used to assess the relationship between survival time and CRP/ALB ratio. Results: Seventy-one dogs were included in the study. Of these, 19 died within 2 days of presentation; an early mortality rate of 26.8%, while 27 died before discharge for an overall mortality rated of 38%. Dogs with higher CRP/ALB ratio had a significantly greater mortality rate than dogs with lower CRP/ALB ratio: for every 1-unit increase in CRP/ALB ratio, the hazard of death over the study period increased by 130% (hazard ratio = 2.34; 95% CI = 1.53-3.58; p < 0.001). The optimal CRP/ALB ratio cut-off point for predicting mortality was 0.56, with a sensitivity and specificity of 88.9% and 68.2%, respectively (AUC = 0.82; p < 0.001). Conclusions: As in humans, the CRP/ALB ratio, may be a promising, though not particularly specific, prognostic marker for increased risk of death in dogs with acute pancreatitis.

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is the manifestation of the systemic response to an infectious or non-infectious disease. We evaluated the association between erythrocyte parameters, including nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) and leukocyte ratios (NLR, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio; BLR, band neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio; BLNR, band neutrophil-to-neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio). A review of the medical records was conducted searching SIRS dogs among those admitted to our intensive care unit and a SIRS grading was obtained based on how many criteria were fulfilled. The Acute Patient Physiology and Laboratory Evaluation (APPLEfast) score was assessed in each dog. Survival rate was assessed 15 days after admission. Dogs with clinical and/or clinicopathological signs of hemolytic or hemorrhagic disorders were excluded. Dogs with ≥2 criteria of SIRS along with a documented underlying infectious cause were recorded as septic (32/90, 35%). A SIRS grading >2 (p = .001) and an APPLEfast score > 25 (p = .03) were associated with mortality. Twenty-two of SIRS dogs (24%) showed circulating NRBCs. The occurrence of circulating NRBCs was associated with the mortality in SIRS groups (p = .0025). The median NLR was 11.69 and NLR was lower in septic dogs compared to non-septic ones (p = .0272). APPLEfast, SIRS grading and circulating NRBCs may be considered as negative prognostic factors in canine SIRS. NLR could be a useful tool in dogs with SIRS, which was significantly lower in the septic group. Further prospective, large-scale studies investigating BLR and BNLR in canine SIRS are warranted.

Abstract
Gallbladder mucocele (GBM) is a common extra-hepatic biliary syndrome in dogs with death rates ranging from 7 to 45%. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the association of survival with variables that could be utilized to improve clinical decisions. A total of 1194 dogs with a gross and histopathological diagnosis of GBM were included from 41 veterinary referral hospitals in this retrospective study. Dogs with GBM that demonstrated abnormal clinical signs had significantly greater odds of death than subclinical dogs in a univariable analysis (OR, 4.2; 95% CI, 2.14-8.23; P<0.001). The multivariable model indicated that categorical variables including owner recognition of jaundice (OR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.19-3.77; P=0.011), concurrent hyperadrenocorticism (OR 1.94; 95% CI, 1.08-3.47; P=0.026), and Pomeranian breed (OR, 2.46; 95% CI 1.10-5.50; P=0.029) were associated with increased odds of death, and vomiting was associated with decreased odds of death (OR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.30-0.72; P=0.001). Continuous variables in the multivariable model, total serum/plasma bilirubin concentration (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.04; P<0.001) and age (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.08-1.26; P<0.001), were associated with increased odds of death. The clinical utility of total serum/plasma bilirubin concentration as a biomarker to predict death was poor with a sensitivity of 0.61 (95% CI, 0.54-0.69) and a specificity of 0.63 (95% CI, 0.59-0.66). This study identified several prognostic variables in dogs with GBM including total serum/plasma bilirubin concentration, age, clinical signs, concurrent hyperadrenocorticism, and the Pomeranian breed. The presence of hypothyroidism or diabetes mellitus did not impact outcome in this study.

Abstract
Acute pancreatitis and acute kidney injury are well-documented comorbidities in human medicine. Dogs that develop acute kidney injury during hospitalization have significantly higher mortality rates than those that do not. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of acute kidney injury in dogs with acute pancreatitis and the prognostic value of various clinicopathological parameters. Cases of acute pancreatitis presented between January 2012 and June 2016 were identified. The diagnosis of acute pancreatitis was based on two or more of the following clinical signs: abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting or anorexia/hyporexia, no other abdominal extra-pancreatic diseases at abdominal ultrasound, and abnormal SNAP cPL test. Diagnosis of acute kidney injury was based on the guidelines of the International Renal Interest Society. Dogs were classified into survivors and non-survivors. Serum creatinine, urea, amylase, total calcium, total cholesterol, C-reactive protein, WBC and band neutrophils were evaluated at admission. Clinical severity index was calculated at admission. Clinical and clinicopathological data were compared between survivors and non-survivors. Sixty-five dogs with acute pancreatitis were assessed. Clinical severity index≥6.5 were associated with poor outcome (P=0.0011). Serum urea and creatinine concentrations at admission were significantly lower in survivors than non-survivors (P<0.0001 and P=0.0002, respectively). Acute kidney injury was diagnosed in 17/65 dogs (26.2%) and was associated with poor outcome (P<0.0001). Oligo-anuria was associated with poor outcome (P=0.0294). Increased clinical severity index and azotemia in dogs with acute pancreatitis were associated with an increased risk of mortality. Acute kidney injury may be a comorbidity of canine acute pancreatitis. The presence of oligo-anuria is associated with poor outcome.

Abstract
An 18-month-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was referred with a history of pyrexia, polyuria and polydypsia, and transient episodes of bilateral hindlimb paralysis. Cardiac evaluation revealed severe systemic hypertension and severe concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle. One month later the cat had a new episode of hindlimb paralysis with recurrent seizures, and died in status epilepticus. At necropsy examination, the coronary arteries, arcuate renal arteries and common iliac arteries showed marked thickening with nodules segmentally located along the vessels and consequent narrowing of the lumina. Histologically, acute and chronic inflammatory infiltration of the vascular walls was associated with necrosis of the muscular layer. Lesions were consistent with polyarteritis nodosa and involved the small, medium and large arteries of the heart, kidneys, small and large intestine, mesentery, liver and thyroid. Multifocal meningeal vasculitis associated with focal infarction of the frontal lobe and necrotizing vascular polyneuropathy were detected. Involvement of the central and peripheral nervous systems in polyarteritis nodosa is a novel finding in cats.

Abstract
Four cases of feline permethrin intoxication are described. The cause of intoxication is the application of canine permethrin spot-on product (Advantix®, Bayer) by the owners. Principal clinical guidelines recommends the use of anticonvulsant drugs to treat seizures or neurological symptoms after initial stabilization and dermal decontamination. The use of lipid emulsion had an increasing interest in the last decade for treatment of toxicosis caused by lipophylic drugs as reported in human and in veterinary medical practices. All cats presented in this study, were treated with intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) at variable dosages, and dexmedetomidine was also administered by intravenous way. No adverse reaction such as thrombophlebitis, overload circulation or others was noticed during and after administration of ILE. Dexmedetomidine was proved to be helpful in tranquillizing the cats. All cats were discharged in good condition faster than other cases treated without their use.

Abstract
A 12 year old, 38 kg, mix-breed, intact male dog presented with a 20 day history of clinical signs consistent with hyperviscosity syndrome secondary to multiple myeloma. The dog received three double filtration plasmapheresis treatments on day 0, 7 and 22 after presentation. A significant (p<0.05) reduction in serum total protein, alpha-2 and gamma globulins was found following each treatment. These reductions were accompanied by a complete resolution, although temporary, of the clinical signs of hyperviscosity syndrome. The present study reported for the first time the use of double filtration plasmapheresis to reduce clinical signs of hyperviscosity syndrome in a dog with multiple myeloma.

Abstract
Endothelial dysfunction and impaired autophagic activity have a crucial role in aging-related diseases such as cardiovascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis. We have identified miR-216a as a microRNA that is induced during endothelial aging and, according to the computational analysis, among its targets includes two autophagy-related genes, Beclin1 (BECN1) and ATG5. Therefore, we have evaluated the role of miR-216a as a molecular component involved in the loss of autophagic function during endothelial aging. The inverse correlation between miR-216a and autophagic genes was conserved during human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) aging and in vivo models of human atherosclerosis and heart failure. Luciferase experiments indicated BECN1, but not ATG5 as a direct target of miR-216a. HUVECs were transfected in order to modulate miR-216a expression and stimulated with 100 μg/ml oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) to induce a stress repairing autophagic process. We found that in young HUVECs, miR-216a overexpression repressed BECN1 and ATG5 expression and the ox-LDL induced autophagy, as evaluated by microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3B) analysis and cytofluorimetric assay. Moreover, miR-216a stimulated ox-LDL accumulation and monocyte adhesion in HUVECs. Conversely, inhibition of miR-216a in old HUVECs rescued the ability to induce a protective autophagy in response to ox-LDL stimulus. In conclusion, mir-216a controls ox-LDL induced autophagy in HUVECs by regulating intracellular levels of BECN1 and may have a relevant role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders and atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor type II (IGF-II) is the main cause of non-islet cell tumour hypoglycaemia (NICTH) and insulin is thought to be the only factor causing hypoglycaemia in insulinomas. However, two case reports of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PNETs) producing IGF-II have been previously published: a human and a canine patient. In this study, we investigated clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features, and biological behaviour of canine pancreatic IGF-II-omas, a subgroup of PNETs that has not been previously characterized. Case records of 58 dogs with confirmed PNETs and hypoglycaemia were reviewed: six patients were affected by IGF-II-omas. Surgery was performed in all cases and two dogs had metastases. Four patients remained alive and in remission at 370, 440, 560 and 890 days post-diagnosis; two died of non-tumour-related causes. IGF-II-omas can be differentiated from insulinomas through hypoinsulinaemia, IGF-II positive and insulin negative immunostaining. The prevalence of this neoplasia is low, accounting for just 6% of PNETs.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the antifungal efficacy of Steramina G u.v. (10% solution of alkyldimetylbenzylammonium chloride; Formenti Grünenthal) and Virkon-S (multipurpose system; Antec International) against Microsporum canis-infected hairs and spores. Samples were collected from a random sample of household cats and from subjects from catteries. Seventy M. canis-positive hairbrushes containing furs, keratin scales and other organic material were treated with each of the two disinfectants, using concentrations recommended by the manufacturer's instructions (2% and 1% for Steramina G u.v. and Virkon-S, respectively). Each brush remained in contact with the antifungal solution for 10 min. After this period, the brushes were air-dried, then seeded into mycobiotic agar, and incubated for up to 21 days at 28 degrees C. The disinfectants were considered effective if dermatophytes failed to grow. Steramina G u.v. was effective in 97.14% of samples and Virkon-S in 87.14%. The antifungal activity of Steramina G u.v. against M. canis was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of Virkon-S.

Abstract
An high level of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species), due to an increased production of oxidant species and/or a decreased efficacy of antioxidant system, can lead to oxidative stress, an emerging health risk factor involved in the aging and in many diseases, including inflammatory, infectious and degenerative disorders, either in humans or in animals. In the last years some assays panels have been developed to globally evaluate the oxidative balance by means of the concomitant assessment of ROS production and antioxidant system capability. In this report, the validation trials of d-ROMs (Reactive Oxygen Metabolites- derived compounds) and BAP (Biological Antioxidant Potential) tests in canine specie are described and also the specific referral ranges are calculated in a Labrador population. The results of linearity, precision and accuracy trials show that both tests exhibit good to excellent analytical performances. The possibility of measuring oxidative stress in vivo with simple, cheap and accurate tests, d-ROMs test and BAP test, provides for the veterinarians a very suitable tool to monitor oxidative stress and to correctly choice of eventual antioxidant supplementations in diseases proven related to oxidative stress in animals and particularly in dogs. Further studies will be useful to confirm this possibility.

Abstract
Ezetimibe (E) is a new cholesterol adsorption inhibitor which prevents the adsorption of dietary and biliary cholesterol by binding to a recently described cholesterol transporter. This pilot study was performed to evaluate the safety and the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-C and C-reactive protein lowering efficacy of atorvastatin (A) and of the association of A plus E in five renal transplant patients with hypercholesterolemia and mild renal functional impairment receiving cyclosporine-A (CsA). Patients received for three periods, each of 3 weeks, A at a dose of 20 mg/day; A at a dose of 10 mg/day and finally, A 10 mg plus E 10 mg daily. The medications were well-tolerated and no important clinical or laboratory (muscle enzyme, creatinine clearance and CsA concentration) abnormalities were observed throughout the study period. A alone lead to target LDL-C values only in two of five patients and did not significantly reduce the mean CRP values. The combination of E plus A produced the lowest lipid levels and significantly reduced CRP mean values and allowed all patients to attain target levels of LDL-C: total cholesterol decreased from 240 +/- 42 (mean +/- S.D.) to 171 +/- 34 mg/dl, LDL-C from 129 +/- 32 to 87 +/- 21 mg/dl, plasma triglycerides from 330 +/- 54 to 194 +/- 71 mg/dl and CRP from 6.2 +/- 1.9 to 3.9 +/- 2.4 mg/l (P < 0.05 for all). This pilot study suggests that the co-administration of E and A at 10 mg/day in renal transplant patients receiving CsA is well-tolerated and effective in reducing important cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
BRCA1 germline mutations confer susceptibility to familial breast and ovarian cancer. Mutational hot spots have never been detected in BRCA1 cDNA. Some mutations have been reported several times whereas some others appear to be population-related. In this study a group of 36 Italian families were analysed for BRCA1 germline mutations. All of them were screened by allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization (ASO) for three recurrent mutations (185delAG, 5382insC, nt332-T>G). Twenty families, selected because of their high risk of carrying BRCA1 mutations, were subjected to analysis of the entire coding sequence of the gene. A total of eight mutations were found. ASO screening demonstrated only one known mutation in one patient, whereas cycle sequencing revealed five new mutations. Three of these new mutations were frameshifts: one occurred in exon 11 (1499insA), one in exon 16 (4873delCA) and one in the splice site of exon 3 (252delAAgt). Two were missense mutations (Cys64Arg; Asn158Tyr). The same frameshift mutation, 1499insA, was detected in three unrelated families. Haplotype analysis supported the hypothesis that two of these families may have had common ancestors, whereas in the third family the analysis was uninformative. BRCA1 germline mutations were found in one out of two families with ovarian cancer, in five out of eight families with breast-ovarian cancer, and in two out of 11 families with breast cancer. All three families with 1499insA mutations included at least one case of ovarian cancer. The majority of the ovarian cancers (4/5) associated with detectable BRCA1 germline mutations were of serous histotype.

Abstract
In the last few years, several drugs have been proposed for the healing of peptic ulcers H2 receptor antagonists are probably the reference-drugs for their efficacy and safety. Acute treatment of peptic ulcer with cimetidine, ranitidine or famotidine gives a high healing rate: from 60% to 90%, depending on the location of the ulcer and the drug used. However, relapse after short-term treatment still remains frequent, and prophylaxis of recurrence must be decided. Long-term treatment with antisecretory drugs could be dangerous for changes of the gastric system, with nitrites and nitro-compounds occurrence, and for the risk of frequent relapses. Therefore, the role of mucus-barrier drugs and surgery must be reconsidered.

Abstract
In a controlled, randomized study of patients undergoing thoracic surgery, calcium heparin prophylaxis is confirmed to prevent activation of the coagulation and fibrinolysis system, by determining plasmatic kallikrein, antitrombin III, and plasmin. In a further study calcium heparin, 5000 I.U. s.c. every 8 hr, is statistically proved not to increase post-operatory bleeding.
