Lymphatic plastic bronchitis and primary chylothorax: A study based on computed tomography lymphangiography

BACKGROUND

This study presents an evaluation of the computed tomography lymphangiography (CTL) features of lymphatic plastic bronchitis (PB) and primary chylothorax to improve the diagnostic accuracy for these two diseases.

AIM

To improve the diagnosis of lymphatic PB or primary chylothorax, a retrospective analysis of the clinical features and CTL characteristics of 71 patients diagnosed with lymphatic PB or primary chylothorax was performed.

METHODS

The clinical and CTL data of 71 patients (20 with lymphatic PB, 41 with primary chylothorax, and 10 with lymphatic PB with primary chylothorax) were collected retrospectively. CTL was performed in all patients. The clinical manifestations, CTL findings, and conventional chest CT findings of the three groups of patients were compared. The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used to compare the differences among the three groups. A difference was considered to be statistically significant when P < 0.05.

RESULTS

(1) The percentages of abnormal contrast medium deposits on CTL in the three groups were as follows: Thoracic duct outlet in 14 (70.0%), 33 (80.5%) and 8 (80.0%) patients; peritracheal region in 18 (90.0%), 15 (36.6%) and 8 (80.0%) patients; pleura in 6 (30.0%), 33 (80.5%) and 9 (90.0%) patients; pericardium in 6 (30.0%), 6 (14.6%) and 4 (40.0%) patients; and hilum in 16 (80.0%), 11 (26.8%) and 7 (70.0%) patients; and (2) the abnormalities on conventional chest CT in the three groups were as follows: Ground-glass opacity in 19 (95.0%), 18 (43.9%) and 8 (80.0%) patients; atelectasis in 4 (20.0%), 26 (63.4%) and 7 (70.0%) patients; interlobular septal thickening in 12 (60.0%), 11 (26.8%) and 3 (30.0%) patients; bronchovascular bundle thickening in 14 (70.0%), 6 (14.6%) and 4 (40.0%) patients; localized mediastinal changes in 14 (70.0%), 14 (34.1%), and 7 (70.0%) patients; diffuse mediastinal changes in 6 (30.0%), 5 (12.2%), and 3 (30.0%) patients; cystic lesions in the axilla in 2 (10.0%), 6 (14.6%), and 2 (20.0%) patients; and cystic lesions in the chest wall in 0 (0%), 2 (4.9%), and 2 (4.9%) patients.

CONCLUSION

CTL is well suited to clarify the characteristics of lymphatic PB and primary chylothorax. This method is an excellent tool for diagnosing these two diseases.

Application of propofol-remifentanil intravenous general anesthesia combined with regional block in pediatric ophthalmic surgery

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to observe the anesthetic effect and safety of intravenous anesthesia without muscle relaxant with propofol-remifentanil combined with regional block under laryngeal mask airway in pediatric ophthalmologic surgery.

METHODS

A total of 90 undergoing ophthalmic surgery were anesthetized with general anesthesia using the laryngeal mask airway without muscle relaxant. They were randomly divided into two groups: 45 children who received propofol-remifentanil intravenous anesthesia combined with regional block (LG group), and 45 children who received total intravenous anesthesia (G group). The peri-operative circulatory indicators, awakening time after general anesthesia, postoperative analgesic effect and the incidence of anesthesia-related adverse events were respectively compared between the two groups.

RESULTS

All the children successfully underwent the surgical procedure. The awakening time after general anesthesia and removal time of laryngeal mask were significantly shorter in the LG group than in the G group (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the heart rates in the perioperative period between the two groups (P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of intraoperative physical response, respiratory depression, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and emergence agitation (EA) between the two groups (P > 0.05). The pain score at the postoperative hour 2 was lower in the LG group than in the G group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Propofol-remifentanil intravenous anesthesia combined with long-acting local anesthetic regional block anesthesia, combined with laryngeal mask ventilation technology without muscle relaxants, can be safely used in pediatric eye surgery to achieve rapid and smooth recovery from general anesthesia and better postoperative analgesia. This anesthesia scheme can improve the comfort and safety of children in perioperative period, and has a certain clinical popularization value.

Recycled PET/PA6 Fibers from Waste Textile with Improved Hydrophilicity by In-Situ Reaction-Induced Capacity Enhancement

Due to the increasing amounts of textile waste, textile to textile recycling is of prime concern. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) represents the most extensively used type of chemical fiber. Its spinnability suffers from impurities and degradation in the processing, which limits its recycling to new fibers. Here, recycled polyester is blended with a small amount of recycled nylon, and the regenerated fibers, which demonstrated good mechanical properties, were obtained via a melt spinning machine. The mechanical properties, thermal properties, rheological properties, and chemical structure of the modified recycled fibers were investigated. It was found that when compared with rPET-T fibers, the elongation at break of rPET-Ax fibers increased to 17.48%, and the strength at break decreased to 3.79 cN/dtex. The compatibility of PET and PA6 copolymer were enhanced by copolymers produced by in-situ reaction in the processing. Meanwhile, the existence of PA6 increases the crystallization temperature and improves the hydrophilicity of the fibers. This study realized the high-value recycling of waste PET fabric to new fibers, which opens a door for the large utilization of waste textiles.

[Healing effect of photodynamic therapy on extraction sockets of periodontally compromised teeth: a randomized, controlled, superiority clinical trial]

Objective: To evaluate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in extraction sockets of periodontally compromised molars on soft tissue healing, postoperative pain, bone density and bone height changes. Methods: This study is a single-center, single-blind, randomized controlled superiority clinical trial. Thirty-eight periodontally compromised molars requiring extraction in patients attending the Department of Periodontology, Stomatology Hospital, School of Stomatology, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, from December 2022 to September 2023 were included, and randomly assigned to PDT group and control group. The control group received routine debridement after extraction, while PDT group received routine debridement followed by PDT. The bucco-lingual and mesio-distal wound distances at 7 and 14 d after extraction were measured, and then the wound closure rates were calculated. Evaluating the soft tissue healing indexes at 7 and 14 d after extraction. The visual analogue scale was used to assess the pain level at 6 h, 1 d, 2 d, and 3 d after tooth extraction. Apical radiographs were taken immediately and 2 months after extraction in order to compare the changes of the bone density and height. Results: The wound closure rate at 1 week was (78.08±5.45)% in PDT group and (71.03±6.82)% in control group, with significant differences (P<0.01). The wound closure rate at 2 weeks in PDT group [(85.88±3.84) %] was significantly higher than that in the control group [(81.66±3.79) %] (P<0.01), but did not reach the superiority value of the superiority test (superiority value=10%, 95%CI at 1 week: 3.00%-11.12%, 95%CI at 2 weeks: 1.71%-6.73%). The soft tissue healing index of PDT group at 1 week was significantly better than the control group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the two groups at 2 weeks (P>0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of postoperative pain at 6 h, 1 d, 2 d and 3 d as well as in bone density and height changes at 2 months after tooth extraction (P>0.05). Conclusions: PDT could promote soft tissues healing to some extent, but did not provide additional assistance in the healing of extraction sockets of periodontally compromised teeth. PDT did not show benefits on postoperative pain, changes of the bone density and bone height after tooth extraction.

Versatile Polymerization-Induced Emission Polymers from Barbier Polymerization of Cinnamic Esters with Tunable Emission

Cinnamic ester is a common and abundant chemical substance, which can be extracted from natural plants. Compared with traditional esters, cinnamic ester contains α,β-unsaturated carbonyl structure with multiple reactive sites, resulting in more abundant reactivities and chemical structures. Here, a versatile polymerization-induced emission (PIE) is successfully demonstrated through Barbier polymerization of cinnamic ester. Attributed to its abundant reactivities of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl structure, Barbier polymerization of cinnamic esters with different organodihalides gives polyalcohol and polyketone via 1,2-addition and 1,4-addition, respectively, which is also confirmed by small molecular model reactions. Meanwhile, these organodihalides dependant polyalcohol and polyketone exhibit different non-traditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) from aggregation-induced emission (AIE) type to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) type, where novel PIE luminogens (PIEgens) are revealed. Further potential applications in explosive detection are carried out, where it achieves TNT detection sensitivity at ppm level in solution and ng level on the test paper. This work therefore expands the structure and functionality libraries of monomer, polymer and NTIL, which might cause inspirations to different fields including polymer chemistry, NTIL, AIE and PIE.

Quality-of-Life Bronchiectasis Respiratory Symptom Scale Predicts the Risk of Exacerbations in Adults with Bronchiectasis: A Prospective Observational Study

Rationale: The relationship between symptoms, measured using a validated disease-specific questionnaire, and longitudinal exacerbation risk has not been demonstrated in bronchiectasis. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate whether baseline symptoms, assessed using the Quality-of-Life Bronchiectasis Respiratory Symptom Scale (QoL-B-RSS) and its individual component scores, could predict future exacerbation risk in patients with bronchiectasis. Methods: The study included 436 adults with bronchiectasis from three tertiary hospitals. Symptoms were measured using the QoL-B-RSS, with scores ranging from 0 to 100, where lower scores indicated more severe symptoms. We examined whether symptoms as continuous measures were associated with the risk of exacerbation over 12 months. The analysis was also repeated for individual components of the QoL-B-RSS score. Results: The baseline QoL-B-RSS score was associated with an increased risk of exacerbations (rate ratio, 1.25 for each 10-point decrease; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15-1.35; P < 0.001), hospitalizations (rate ratio, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.05-1.43; P = 0.02), and reduced time to the first exacerbation (hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.03-1.21; P = 0.01) over 12 months, even after adjusting for relevant confounders, including exacerbation history. The QoL-B-RSS score was comparable to exacerbation history in its association with future frequent exacerbations (defined as three or more exacerbations per year) and hospitalization (area under the curve, 0.86 vs. 0.84; P = 0.46; and area under the curve, 0.81 vs. 0.83; P = 0.41, respectively). Moreover, patients with more severe symptoms in the majority of individual components of the QoL-B-RSS were more likely to experience exacerbations. Conclusions: Symptoms can serve as useful indicators for identifying patients at increased risk of exacerbation in bronchiectasis. Beyond relying solely on exacerbation history, a comprehensive assessment of symptoms could facilitate timely and cost-effective implementation of interventions for exacerbation prevention.

Clickable Polymerization-Induced Emission Luminogens Toward Color-Tunable Modification of Non-Traditional Intrinsic Luminescent Polymers

Non-traditional intrinsic luminescent (NTIL) polymer is an emerging field, and its color-tunable modification is highly desirable but still rarely investigated. Here, a click chemistry approach for the color-tunable modifications of NTIL polymers by introducing clickable polymerization-induced emission luminogen (PIEgen), is demonstrated. Through Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition click chemistry, a series of PIEgens is successful prepared, which is further polymerized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Interestingly, after clickable modification, these monomers are nonemissive in both solution and aggregation states; while, the corresponding polymers exhibit intriguing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, confirming their PIEgen characteristics. By varying alkynyl substitutions, color-tunable NTIL polymers are achieved with emission wavelength varying from 448 to 498 nm, revealing a series of PIEgens and verifying the importance of modification of NTIL polymers. Further luminescence energy transfer application is carried out as well. This work therefore designs a series of clickable PIEgens and opens a new avenue for the modification of NTIL polymers via click chemistry, which may cause inspirations to the research fields including luminescent polymer, NTIL, click chemistry, AIE and modification.

Barbier Polymerization-Induced Emission towards Fully Substituted Polyethylene Analogues with Non-Traditional Intrinsic Luminescence

The properties of polyethylene are highly dependent on the variety and quantity of substitutions. Generally, polyethylene can only be fully substituted with fluorine atoms, mainly e. g., polytetrafluoroethylene and nafion, because atomic radius of fluorine atom is small enough. The preparation of fully substituted polyethylene analogues (FSPEA) and their non-traditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) are attractive, especially for substitutions with relatively larger atomic radii than a fluorine atom. Here, Barbier polymerization-induced emission (PIE) is demonstrated as a universal method for the molecular design of NTIL type FSPEAs with intriguing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviors. Through Barbier polymerization of diphenyldichloromethane and different peroxyesters in the presence of Mg in one pot, a series of FSPEAs, including polytriphenylethanol (PTPE), polydiphenylfurylethanol (PDPFE), polydiphenylthiophenylethanol (PDPTE) and polydiphenylnaphthylethanol (PDPNE) have been successfully prepared. Further potential applications for explosive detection, artificial light-harvesting system and white phosphor-converted light-emitting diode are investigated. Therefore, this work opens up a new approach for the molecular design of FSPEA with non-conjugated luminescence, which may cause inspirations to different research fields like polyolefin and luminescent materials.

Adaptive Ionization-Induced Tunable Electric Double Layer for Practical Zn Metal Batteries over Wide pH and Temperature Ranges

The violent side reactions of Zn metal in aqueous electrolyte lead to sharp local-pH fluctuations at the interface, which accelerate Zn anode breakdown; thus, the development of an optimization strategy to accommodate a wide pH range is particularly critical for improving aqueous Zn metal batteries. Herein, we report a pH-adaptive electric double layer (EDL) tuned by glycine (Gly) additive with pH-dependent ionization, which exhibits excellent capability to stabilize Zn anodes in wide-pH aqueous electrolytes. It is discovered that a Gly-ionic EDL facilitates the directed migration of charge carriers in both mildly acidic and alkaline electrolytes, leading to the successful suppression of local saturation. It is worth mentioning that the regulation effect of the additive concentration on the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) structure of Zn electrodes is clarified in depth. It is revealed that the Gly additives without dimerization can develop orderly and dense vertical adsorption within the IHP to effectively reduce the EDL repulsive force of Zn2+ and isolate H2O from the anode surface. Consequently, they Zn anode with tunable EDL exhibits superior electrochemical performance in a wide range of pH and temperature, involving the prodigious cycle reversibility of 7000 h at Zn symmetric cells with ZnSO4-Gly electrolytes and an extended lifespan of 50 times in Zn symmetric cells with KOH-Gly electrolytes. Moreover, acidic Zn powder||MnO2 pouch cells, and alkaline high-voltage Zn||Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells, and Zn||NiCo-LDH cells also deliver excellent cycling reversibility. The tunable EDL enables the ultrahigh depth of discharge (DOD) of 93%. This work elucidates the design of electrolyte additives compatible in a wide range of pH and temperature, which might cause inspiration in the fields of practical multiapplication scenarios for Zn anodes.

[Advantage analysis of flow-through cell method in quality evaluation of Chinese patent medicine: a case study of Danshen Tablets]

To explore the quality consistency evaluation method for multi-component traditional Chinese medicine and establish a dissolution evaluation method suitable for the characteristics of multi-component Chinese patent medicine, this study discussed the characteristics and advantages of the flow-through cell method in the dissolution evaluation of Chinese patent medicine by comparing the impact of the small cup method and the flow-through cell method on the dissolution behavior of water-soluble and lipid-soluble major active components of Danshen Tablets. Dissolution tests were performed using the small cup method as described in the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and the newly introduced flow-through cell method(closed-loop method) with water solution containing 0.5% SDS as dissolution medium. Cumulative dissolution curves of the water-soluble component salvianolic acid B and the lipid-soluble component tanshinone Ⅱ_A in Danshen Tablets were plotted, and fitting and similarity analysis of the dissolution models was conducted to identify the characteristics and advantages of the flow-through cell method. For the small cup method, 150 mL of water containing 0.5% SDS was used as the dissolution medium, with a rotation speed of 75 r·min~(-1) and a temperature of(37±0.5) ℃, and 3 mL of samples were taken at 15, 30 min, 1, 2, and 4 h, with fresh dissolution medium added at the same temperature and volume. For the flow-through cell method, a closed-loop system was used. Danshen Tablets were placed in the flow-through cell with approximately 6.7 g of glass beads, and 150 mL of water containing 0.5% SDS was used as the dissolution medium. The flow rate was set at 20 mL·min~(-1), and the temperature and sampling were the same as the small cup method. The results showed that compared with the small cup method, the flow-through cell method had stronger discriminative power and higher sensitivity in distinguishing the dissolution behavior of the two components, and could better reflect the differences in formulation quality, especially for water-insoluble lipid-soluble components. Given that there were no essential differences in the in vitro release kinetics between the two methods, the flow-through cell method could not only replace the traditional small cup method but also better guide the formulation development and identify quality issues of formulations.

[To compare the efficacy and incidence of severe hematological adverse events of flumatinib and imatinib in patients newly diagnosed with chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia]

Objective: To analyze and compare therapy responses, outcomes, and incidence of severe hematologic adverse events of flumatinib and imatinib in patients newly diagnosed with chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) . Methods: Data of patients with chronic phase CML diagnosed between January 2006 and November 2022 from 76 centers, aged ≥18 years, and received initial flumatinib or imatinib therapy within 6 months after diagnosis in China were retrospectively interrogated. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to reduce the bias of the initial TKI selection, and the therapy responses and outcomes of patients receiving initial flumatinib or imatinib therapy were compared. Results: A total of 4 833 adult patients with CML receiving initial imatinib (n=4 380) or flumatinib (n=453) therapy were included in the study. In the imatinib cohort, the median follow-up time was 54 [interquartile range (IQR), 31-85] months, and the 7-year cumulative incidences of CCyR, MMR, MR(4), and MR(4.5) were 95.2%, 88.4%, 78.3%, and 63.0%, respectively. The 7-year FFS, PFS, and OS rates were 71.8%, 93.0%, and 96.9%, respectively. With the median follow-up of 18 (IQR, 13-25) months in the flumatinib cohort, the 2-year cumulative incidences of CCyR, MMR, MR(4), and MR(4.5) were 95.4%, 86.5%, 58.4%, and 46.6%, respectively. The 2-year FFS, PFS, and OS rates were 80.1%, 95.0%, and 99.5%, respectively. The PSM analysis indicated that patients receiving initial flumatinib therapy had significantly higher cumulative incidences of CCyR, MMR, MR(4), and MR(4.5) and higher probabilities of FFS than those receiving the initial imatinib therapy (all P<0.001), whereas the PFS (P=0.230) and OS (P=0.268) were comparable between the two cohorts. The incidence of severe hematologic adverse events (grade≥Ⅲ) was comparable in the two cohorts. Conclusion: Patients receiving initial flumatinib therapy had higher cumulative incidences of therapy responses and higher probability of FFS than those receiving initial imatinib therapy, whereas the incidence of severe hematologic adverse events was comparable between the two cohorts.

Search for serum biomarkers in patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder using metabolome analysis

Objective

Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are two common psychiatric disorders. Due to the overlapping clinical symptoms and the lack of objective diagnostic biomarkers, bipolar disorder (BD) is easily misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD), which in turn affects treatment decisions and prognosis. This study aimed to investigate biomarkers that could be used to differentiate BD from MDD.

Methods

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was performed to assess serum metabolic profiles in depressed patients with BD (n = 59), patients with MDD (n = 14), and healthy controls (n = 10). Data was analyzed using partial least squares discriminant analysis, orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis and t-tests. Different metabolites (VIP > 1 and p < 0.05) were identified and further analyzed using Metabo Analyst 5.0 to identify relevant metabolic pathways.

Results

The metabolic phenotypes of the BD and MDD groups were significantly different from those of the healthy controls, and there were different metabolite differences between them. In the BD group, the levels of 3-hydroxybutyric acid, n-acetyl glycoprotein, β-glucose, pantothenic acid, mannose, glycerol, and lipids were significantly higher than those in the healthy control group, and the levels of lactate and acetoacetate were significantly lower than those in the healthy control group. In the MDD group, the levels of 3-hydroxybutyric acid, n-acetyl glycoprotein, pyruvate, choline, acetoacetic acid, and lipids were significantly higher than those of healthy controls, and the levels of acetic acid and glycerol were significantly lower than those of healthy controls.

Conclusion

Glycerolipid metabolism is significantly involved in BD and MDD. Pyruvate metabolism is significantly involved in MDD. Pyruvate, choline, and acetate may be potential biomarkers for MDD to distinguish from BD, and pantothenic acid may be a potential biomarker for BD to distinguish from MDD.

Ketyl Radical Anion Mediated Radical Polymerization and Anionic Ring-Opening Polymerization to Give Polymers with Low Molecular Weight Distribution

The development of novel polymerization capable of yielding polymers with low molecular weight distribution (Đ) is essential and significant in polymer chemistry, where monofunctional initiator contains only one initiation site in these polymerizations generally. Here, ketyl radical anion species is introduced to develop a novel Ketyl Mediated Polymerization (KMP), which enables radical polymerization at carbon radical site and anionic ring-opening polymerization at oxygen anion site, respectively. Meanwhile, polymerization and corresponding organic synthesis generally couldn't be performed simultaneously in one pot. Through KMP, organic synthesis and polymerization are achieved in one pot, where small molecules (cyclopentane derivates) and polymers with low Đ are successfully prepared under mild condition simultaneously. At the initiation step, both organic synthesis and polymerization are initiated by single electron transfer reaction with ketyl radical anion formation. Cyclopentane derivates are synthesized through 3-3 coupling reaction and cyclization. Polystyrene and polycaprolactone with low Đ and a full monomer conversion are prepared by KMP via radical polymerization and anionic ring-opening polymerization, respectively. This work therefore enables both organic synthesis and two different polymerizations from same initiation system, which saves time, labour, resource and energy and expands the reaction mode and method libraries of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry.

Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Dehydrogenation of Alcohols on TiO2 via Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer for Coproduction of H2 and Aldehydes

Developing visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the catalytic dehydrogenation of organics is of great significance for sustainable solar energy utilization. Here, we first report that aromatic alcohols could be efficiently split into H₂ and aldehydes over TiO₂ under visible-light irradiation through a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism. A series of TiO₂ catalysts with different surface contents of the hydroxyl group (-OH) have been synthesized by controlling the hydrothermal and calcination synthesis methods. An optimal H₂ production rate of 18.6 μmol h^-1 is obtained on TiO₂ synthesized from the hydrothermal method with a high content of surface -OH. Experimental characterizations and comparison studies reveal that the surface -OH markedly influences the formation of LMCT complexes and thus changes the visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance. This work is anticipated to inspire further research endeavors in the design and fabrication of visible-light-driven photocatalyst systems based on the LMCT mechanism to realize the simultaneous synthesis of clean fuel and fine chemicals.

[Investigation and influencing factors on pelvic floor muscle strength of 929 adult females in gynecological outpatient department]

Objective: To investigate the present situation of pelvic floor muscle strength, and to analyze the factors affecting pelvic floor muscle strength. Methods: The data of patients who were admitted into the general outpatient department of gynecology, Peking University People's Hospital from October 2021 to April 2022 were collected, and the patients who met the exclusion criteria were included in this cross sectional study. The patient's age, height, weight, education level, defecation way and defecation time, birth history, maximum newborn birth weight, occupational physical activity, sedentary time, menopause, family history and disease history were recorded by questionnaire. Morphological indexes such as waist circumference, abdomen circumference and hip circumference were measured with tape measure. Handgrip strength level was measured with grip strength instrument. After performing routine gynecological examinations, the pelvic floor muscle strength was evaluated by palpation with modified Oxford grading scale (MOS). MOS grade>3 was taken as normal group and ≤3 as decreased group. Binary logistic regression was used to investigate the related factors of deceased pelvic floor muscle strength. Results: A total of 929 patients were included in the study, and the average MOS grade was 2.8±1.2. By univariate analysis, birth history, menopausal time, defecation time, handgrip strength level, waist circumference and abdominal circumference were related to the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength (all P<0.05). By binary logistic regression analysis, the level of handgrip strength (OR=0.913, 95%CI: 0.883-0.945; P<0.001) was correlated with normal pelvic floor muscle strength; waist circumference (OR=1.025, 95%CI: 1.005-1.046; P=0.016), birth history (OR=2.224, 95%CI: 1.570-3.149; P<0.001), sedentary time> 8 hours (OR=2.073, 95%CI: 1.198-3.587; P=0.009) were associated with the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength. Conclusions: The level of handgrip strength is related to the normal pelvic floor muscle strength of females, while the waist circumference, birth history and sedentary time>8 hours are related to the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength of females. In order to prevent the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength, it is necessary to carry out relevant health education, enhance exercise, improve the overall strength level, reduce daily sedentary time, maintain symmetry, and carry out comprehensive overall intervention to improve pelvic floor muscle function.

[Establishment of a recombined mannose-binding lectin protein-magnetic beads-enriched binding recombinant enzyme-assisted polymerase chain reaction assay for Candida in blood samples]

Objective: To establish a nested recombinant enzyme-assisted polymerase chain reaction (RAP) technique combined with recombined mannose-binding lectin protein (M1 protein)-magnetic beads enrichment for the detection of Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Candida tropicalis (C. tropicalis) in blood samples for the early diagnosis of candidemia albicans and candidiemia tropicalis. Methods: The primer probes for highly conserved regions of the internal transcribed spacerregions of C. albicans and C. tropicalis were deigned to establish RAP assays for the detections of C. albicans and C. tropicalis; The sensitivity and reproducibility of nucleic acid tests with gradient dilutions of standard strains and specificity of nucleic acid tests with common clinical pathogens causing bloodstream infection were condcuted. M1 protein-magnetic bead enriched plasma C. albicans and C. tropicalis were used for RAP and PCR in with simulated samples and the results were compared. Results: The sensitivity of the established dual RAP assay was 2.4-2.8 copies/reaction, with higher reproducibility and specificity. M1 protein-magnetic bead enrichment of pathogen combined with the dual RAP assay could complete the detections of C. albicans and C. tropicalis in plasma within 4 hours. Fie the pathogen samples at concentration <10 CFU/ml, the number of the samples tested by RAP was higher than that tested by PCR after enrichment. Conclusion: In this study, a dual RAP assay for the detections of C. albicans and C. tropicalis in blood sample was developed, which has the advantages of accuracy, rapidity, and less contaminants and has great potential for rapid detection of Candidemia.

One-Pot Synthesis of Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Polymers through Polymerization-Induced Emission

Stimuli-responsive opposite emission (A)/absorption (B) polymer material (A∪B = Ω and A∩B = Ø) represents a novel polymer material that is difficult to prepare. Here, we demonstrate a one-pot strategy for the molecular design of stimuli-responsive opposite emission/absorption polymer material with intriguing properties of opposite emission/absorption and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) type nontraditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) in the visible region, through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization-induced emission (PIE) of the N,N-dimethyl-triphenylmethanol moiety. Investigations reveal that NTIL is due to the through-space conjugation effect caused by polymer chain entanglement, when increasing the repeating unit number. The corresponding stimuli-responsive opposite emission/absorption properties are derived from the carbocation-quinoid mechanism, which enables the fluorescence encryption capability. This work therefore demonstrates the proof of concept of a novel opposite emission/absorption polymer material that might cause inspiration in different fields.

Recent Advances and Challenges in Barbier Polymerization

The Barbier reaction, a classical name reaction for carbon-carbon bond formation, has played important roles in organic chemistry for over 120 years. The introduction of the Barbier reaction into polymer chemistry for the development of a novel Barbier polymerization, expands the methodology, monomer, chemical structure and property libraries of polymerization, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and non-traditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL). This mini review focuses on Barbier polymerization, including the brief introduction of the history and importance of polymerization methods design and the achievements of Barbier polymerization from molecular design strategies, functionalities and properties. An outlook of Barbier polymerization is also proposed. This mini review on Barbier polymerization therefore may cause inspirations to scientists in different fields.

[Cardiovascular events and risk factors in hematological neoplasms patients treated with anthracyclines]

Objective: To explore the incidence and risk factors of cardiovascular events in hematological neoplasms patients treated with anthracyclines in the real world. Methods: A total of 408 patients with lymphoma and leukemia, who were treated with anthracyclines during hospitalization in the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University from January 1, 2018 to July 31, 2021, were included in this retrospective study. Patients were divided into cardiovascular event group (n=74) and non-cardiovascular event group (n=334). The primary endpoint was cardiovascular events (arrhythmia, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction etc.) after anthracyclines therapy. The secondary endpoint was all-cause mortality, cardiovascular-cause death, discontinued chemotherapy due to cardiovascular events. Multivariate regression analysis was used to investigate the risk factors of cardiovascular events. Kaplan-Meier was performed to calculate the incidence of all-cause mortality. Results: The mean age was (55.6±14.9) years, and there were 227 male patients (55.6%) in this cohort. The median follow-up time was 45 months. During follow-up, cardiovascular adverse events occurred in 74 patients (18.1%), including 45 heart failure (38 were heart failure with preserved ejection fraction), 30 arrhythmia, 4 acute myocardial infarction and 2 myocarditis/pericarditis. Multivariate regression analysis showed age (OR=1.024, 95%CI 1.003-1.045, P=0.027) and history of hypertension over 10 years (OR=2.328, 95%CI 1.055-5.134, P=0.036) were independent risk factors for the cardiovascular events. Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed mortality was significantly higher in cardiovascular event group than in non-cardiovascular event group (47.3% vs. 26.6%, P=0.001). In the cardiovascular event group, chemotherapy was discontinued in 9 cases (12.2%) due to cardiovascular events and cardiovascular death occurred in 7 cases (9.5%). Conclusions: Although heart failure is the main cardiovascular event in lymphoma and leukemia patients post anthracyclines therapy, other cardiovascular events especially arrhythmias are also common. The presence of cardiovascular events is associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality in these patients. Age and long-term hypertension are independent risk factors for cardiovascular events in lymphoma and leukemia patients after anthracyclines treatment.

Plastic properties affect the composition of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities and further regulate the ARGs in their surface biofilms

Plastic wastes are ubiquitous in the offshore and oceans with an increasing quantity, and inevitably, microbial communities colonized the plastics to form biofilms, which have become dispersal vectors for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study focused on the impact of plastic properties including hardness, wettability, and zeta-potential on the biomass, prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities and ARGs in biofilms formed on specific plastics (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) in an estuarine environment. The results showed that, in comparison to PP, more biomass characterized by more dry weight, chlorophyll a (Chl a) and total organic carbon (TOC) was found in biofilms formed on PE and PET, which may be related to their lower surface wettability. Proteobacteria were the dominant prokaryotic phyla, and they accounted for 53.06%, 81.90%, 37.06%, 76.25%, and 54.27% of the total sequences in biofilms on PE, PP, PET, water and sediment, respectively. Ascomycota were the predominant eukaryotic phyla in biofilms, water, and sediment, and their abundances were elevated in biofilms on PP, which accounted for 34.73%. The biofilms on PP had a higher relative abundance of ARGs (3.13) compared to those on PE (2.59) and PET (0.23). Furthermore, both the plastic-biofilm properties (e.g. dry weight, Chl a, and TOC) and microbial communities (e.g., Fungi and Proteobacteria) may be involved in regulating the abundance of ARGs. Moreover, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were significantly correlated to both the absolute and relative abundance of ARGs, indicating that MGEs may regulate the migration of ARGs in biofilms. Taken together, this investigation provides the significance of the plastic type, surface properties, and surrounding environments in shaping microbial communities and ARGs in biofilms formed on plastics.

[Advances in genome-wide association study of pulmonary arterial hypertension]

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a complex disease caused by multiple factors, including idiopathic PAH, heritable PAH, disease related PAH etc. Due to the high genetic heterogeneity, clinical characteristics and prognosis of PAH patients vary greatly. At present, the specific pathogenesis of PAH is unclear, and the diagnosis and treatment of PAH remain to be explored. Therefore, the study of genetic susceptibility to PAH is of great significance for understanding the occurrence and development of the disease. With the development of genome-wide association study (GWAS), a large number of genetic variations related to etiology, clinical manifestations, prognosis and treatment of PAH have been identified. This review summarizes the recent progress in the application of GWAS in the study of genetic susceptibility of PAH, and provides new insights for further exploration of the development and individualized management of PAH.

[Clinicopathological features of early gastric cancer after Helicobacter pylori eradication]

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features of early gastric cancers after Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication. Methods: The clinical data of 26 cases of gastric cancer that were diagnosed after H. pylori eradication and 45 cases without H. pylori eradication in the 989 Hospital of the Joint Logistics Support Force of the People's Liberation Army (the former 152 Hospital), Pingdingshan, China from 2013 to 2021 were collected. The histological, immunophenotypic and clinical characteristics of the two groups were compared, and discussed with review of the related literature. Results: Among the gastric cancer patients with H. pylori eradication, there were 20 males and 6 females with a median age of 65 years (range 53 to 77 years). The cancer involved the upper part of the stomach in 12 cases, the middle part of the stomach in 4 cases, and the lower part of the stomach in 10 cases. The median diameter of the tumors was 12 mm (range 4-29 mm). According to the Paris Classification, 4 cases were 0-Ⅱa, 4 cases were 0-Ⅱb, 18 cases were 0-Ⅱc. White light endoscopy showed that the lesions were reddish to yellowish. The lesion boundary was clear in 12 cases and was unclear or gastritis-like changes in 14 cases, while the irregular microvascular structure and microsurface structure, as well as the relatively visible spinous boundary, were visible under narrow-band imaging. There were 20 cases of well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma, 4 cases of highly to moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma, and 2 cases of well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma with papillary adenocarcinoma. Compared with gastric cancers without H. pylori eradication, gastric cancers diagnosed after H. pylori eradication was associated with lower nucleus-cytoplasm ratio (<50%), normal epithelial coverage on the cancer surface, mild atypical epithelial coverage on the cancer surface, elongation of non-cancerous glands in the cancer tissue and subepithelial progression of cancerous glands were higher (P<0.05). The cellular immunophenotypes were gastric type in 6 cases, intestinal type in 4 cases and gastrointestinal mixed type in 16 cases. Conclusions: The early gastric cancers diagnosed after H. pylori eradication are more subtle clinically and mostly well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. The important morphological features of gastric cancer diagnosed after H. pylori eradication are decreased cytological atypia and overlying normal epithelium or mildly atypical epithelium of the cancer. Understanding and recognizing these morphological features are helpful to make correct endoscopic and pathological diagnoses.

Degradable polymeric nanomaterials with a high solid content and multiple morphologies by polymerization-induced self-assembly

The preparation of degradable polymeric nanomaterials with a high solid content and multiple morphologies is highly desirable but still challenging. Here, the RAFT dispersion polymerization of styrene and 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane was demonstrated to achieve various morphologies, including spheres, vesicles, worms, and large compound vesicles, with a high solid content through polymerization-induced self-assembly, which opens up a new avenue for the preparation of degradable polymeric nanomaterials.

[Establishment and validation of prediction model of new-onset pelvic organ prolapse in early postpartum period]

Objective: To analyze the risk factors of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and to establish the prediction model. Methods: A study was conducted on the prevalence of POP among 2 247 parturient women at 6 weeks postpartum in Peking University People's Hospital from December 2018 to October 2019, and relevant influencing factors were analyzed to construct a prediction model of early postpartum POP using logsitic regression, which was validated internally. Data from November 2019 to December 2019 (403 parturient women) were collected for external validation of the prediction model. In addition, the obstetrical factors affecting the occurrence of early postpartum POP in 885 primiparas with vaginal delivery (from January 2019 to November 2019) were further discussed. Results: A total of 2 247 cases were included in the modeling group, and 403 cases were included in the external validation data set. POP accounted for 24.3% (545/2 247). Age, parity, body mass index before pregnancy, vaginal delivery and newborn birth weight were negative factors for early postpartum POP (all P<0.05). The nomogram was established based on the above factors, and internal and external verification indicated that the model had a good discrimination (C-index were 0.759 and 0.760, respectively). In addition, this study found that age and newborn birth weight were the main causes of early postpartum POP in primiparas with vaginal delivery (P=0.044, P=0.004). Conclusions: The incidence of early postpartum POP is high. The prediction model of POP constructed in this study could be used to guide clinical practice to a certain extent and give corresponding treatment suggestions to pregnant women scientifically, so as to provide theoretical support for primary prevention.

Unpredicted Concentration-Dependent Sensory Properties of Pyrene-Containing NBN-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Pyrene molecules containing NBN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized by a simple and efficient intermolecular dehydration reaction between 1-pyrenylboronic acid and aromatic diamine. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) with a five-membered NBN ring and pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) with a six-membered NBN ring show differing luminescence. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) shows concentration-dependent luminescence and enhanced emission after grinding at solid state. Pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) exhibits a turn-on type luminescence upon fluoride ion addition at lower concentration, as well as concentration-dependent stability. Further potential applications of Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) on artificial light-harvesting film were demonstrated by using commercial NiR dye as acceptor.

CYFRA21-1 is a more sensitive biomarker to assess the severity of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis

Background

Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CYFRA21-1 are the commonly used biomarkers to identify patients with autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (APAP). However, it is not clear which of the biomarkers is more sensitive to the severity of the patient’s condition.

Methods

APAP patients numbering 151 were enrolled in this study. All patients’ severity was assessed through the severity and prognosis score of PAP (SPSP). According to the respective laboratory upper limits of serum levels of LDH, CEA and CYFRA21-1, APAP patients were divided into higher and lower-level groups. Patients were divided into five groups based on SPSP. 88 patients had completed six months of follow-up. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, and critical point of LDH, CEA and CYFRA21-1 between APAP patients and normal control group, and between grade 1–2 and 3–5 through receiving operating characteristics (ROC) curve.

Results

Serum LDH, CEA and CYFRA21-1 levels of patients with PAP were higher and distinctly related to PaO₂, FVC, FEV₁, DLCO, HRCT scores and SPSP. The SPSP of patients in higher-level LDH, CEA and CYFRA21-1 groups were higher than those of corresponding lower-level groups. Based on SPSP results, the patients were divided into five groups (grade I, 20; grade II, 37; grade III, 40; grade IV, 38; grade V, 16). The serum level of CYFRA21-1 of patients with APAP in grade II was higher than that of patients in grade I and lower than that of patients in grade III. Serum CYFRA21-1 of patients with APAP after six months were higher than the baseline among the aggravated group. Serum LDH, CEA and CYFRA21-1 levels after six months among patients in the relieved group of patients with APAP were lower than the baseline. ROC correlating LDH, CEA and CYFRA21-1 values with APAP severity (between grade 1–2 and 3–5) showed an optimal cutoff of LDH of over 203 U/L (< 246 U/L), CEA of over 2.56 ug/L (< 10 ug/L), and CYFRA21-1 of over 5.57 ng/ml (> 3.3 ng/ml) (AUC: 0.815, 95% CI [0.748–0.882], sensitivity: 0.606, specificity: 0.877).

Conclusion

Serum CYFRA21-1 level was more sensitive in revealing the severity of APAP than LDH and CEA levels among mild to moderate forms of disease.

Barbier polymerization induced emission of cinnamaldehyde: a one-pot Grignard reaction?

The Grignard reaction of cinnamaldehyde is demonstrated to give a 1,2-addition product, while the Barbier reaction of cinnamaldehyde yields a macromolecule with aggregation-induced emission type non-conjugated luminescence properties.

[Effects of exogenous methylglyoxal on chesnut seedlings under drought stress]

Methylglyoxal (MG) is a novel signaling molecule with multiple functions in plants. To explore the effects of MG on Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima) under drought stress, two-year-old 'Huangpeng' chestnut seedlings were treated with 15% polyethylene glycol (PEG) coupled with MG or its scavenger N-acetyl-L-cys-teine (NAC). We measured the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR), and glyoxalase enzymes, including glyoxalase Ⅰ (GlyⅠ) and glyoxalase Ⅱ(GlyⅡ). Contents of antioxidants such as endogenous MG, malondialdehyde (MDA), H₂O₂, and O₂^-· as well as the osmotic adjustment substances including proline (Pro), soluble sugar (SS), glycine betaine (GB) were also detected. The results showed that 0.5 mmol·L^-1 MG significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, APX, GR) and glyoxalase enzymes (GlyⅠ, GlyⅡ) in leaves of chestnut seedlings under drought stress, elevated the contents of osmotic adjustment substances (Pro, SS, GB) and antioxidant substances (ASA, GSH), and reduced the contents of MG, MDA, H₂O₂, O₂^-· and dehydroascorbate (DHA). Drought stress induced damages such as membrane lipid peroxidation and osmotic stress was alleviated by MG, leading to an overall improved adaptability of chestnut to drought stress. Moreover, the addition of MG scavenger NAC could reverse the effects induced by MG, indicating that MG had positive impacts on drought resistance of chestnut plants. Our study provided a theoretical basis for further exploring the mechanism of MG in alleviating drought stress induced symptoms in chestnut.

Barbier polymerization is realized at room-temperature with single-atom polymerization and polymerization-induced emission characteristics, which exhibits capability on sensitive explosive detection and artificial light-harvesting system fabrication.

High accuracy measurement of the ground-state hyperfine splitting in a 113Cd+ microwave clock: erratum

We present an erratum to our Letter [Opt. Lett.40, 4249 (2015)OPLEDP0146-959210.1364/OL.40.004249]. This erratum corrects the nuclear Lande factor gI in Eq. (2). After correcting the error, the final ground-state hyperfine splitting frequency of the ¹¹³Cd⁺ ion is determined to be 15199862855.0287(10) Hz.

Enhancement of Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performance and Wear Resistance of the UHMWPE/PP Blend by Constructing a Segregated Hybrid Conductive Carbon Black-Polymer Network

The low-percolation-threshold conductive networking structure is indispensable for the high performance and functionalization of conductive polymer composites (CPCs). In this work, conductive carbon black (CCB)-reinforced ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/polypropylene (PP) blend with tunable electrical conductivity and good mechanical properties was prepared using a high-speed mechanical mixing method and a compression-molded process. An interconnecting segregated hybrid CCB-polymer network is formed in electrically conductive UHMWPE/PP/CCB (UPC) composites. The UPC composites possess a dense conductive pathway at a low percolation threshold of 0.48 phr. The composite with 3 phr CCB gives an electrical conductivity value of 1.67 × 10^-3 S/cm, 12 orders of magnitude higher than that of the polymeric matrix, suggesting that CCB improves both the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the composite at the loading fraction over its percolation threshold. The composite with 15 phr CCB presents an absorption-dominated electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) as high as 27.29 dB at the X-band. The composite also presents higher tribological properties, mechanical properties, and thermal stability compared to the UP blend. This effort provides a simple and effective way for the mass fabrication of CPC materials with excellent performance.

Cellulomonas taurus sp. nov., a novel bacteria with multiple hydrolase activity isolated from livestock, and potential application in wastewater treatment

A Gram-positive, smooth, sub-transparent, faint yellow,0.5-0.7 µm diameter, rod shaped aerobic or facultative aerobic strain P40-2^Twas isolated from livestock farms in Northeast China. Strain P40-2^T grew at 25-40 °C (optimum 30-38 °C), and in 0-4% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0%) in LB medium. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain P40-2^T belongs to the class Cellulomonas and is most closely related to C. denverensis strain W6929, C. pakistanensis strain NCCP-11and C. hominis strain CE40.DNA-DNA hybridization rate of strain P40-2^T was 29%, and the ANI with C.denverensisstrainW6929 was 85.33%. The genome is 3437431 bp long with a G + C content of 71.99%. Of the 3177 predicted genes, 3119 were protein-coding genes and 58 were RNA encoding genes. The chemotaxonomic data: menaquinone was MK-9(H₄), anteiso-C_15: 0, C_16:0 and anteiso-C_17: 0 were the major cellular fatty acids, and the main cell-wall amino acids were ornithine,alanine, glycine and glutamate. The cell wall peptidogly can sugars included glucose, rhamnose, galactose and mannose. The polar lipid present were DPG, PG, PE, and PIM. On the basis of DNA-DNA relatedness, phylogenetic position, complete genome sequence and physiological characteristics, strain P40-2^T can be differentiated from other species of the genus Cellulomonas with validly published names and thus represents a novel species, for which the name Cellulomonas taurus is proposed. The type strain is Cellulomonas taurus P40-2^T (= CGMCC No.1.17732^T).The acute toxicity test in mice showed that LD₅₀ of strain P40-2^T was rather high with 1.5 × 10¹¹ CFU/mouse, which indicated low pathogenicity. Drug susceptibility showed that strainP40-2^T was resistant to most antibiotics and only sensitive to six antibiotics. Strain P40-2^T contained a variety of hydrolytic enzymes including the ability to hydrolyze cellulose, β-glucan, chitin, xylan, and casein. Microbial flocculant MBF-P40 for sewage was prepared with strain P40-2^T, after strain P40-2^T was confirmed that had good flocculation effect. MBF-P40 was used to prepare flocculation rate of 99.40%. MBF-P40 treatmented sewage from eight different sources. Flocculation rate for pig farm wastewater was 96.07%, COD removal rate is 71.05%, ammonia nitrogen removal rate is 18.22%. The result shows that MBF-P40 has a good flocculation effect, and good prospect of development and application for wastewater treatment.

Antibiotic resistance genes in biofilms on plastic wastes in an estuarine environment

Plastic wastes are ubiquitous in aquatic environment. Biofilms, which are often formed on the surface of plastic waste, may contain antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study focused on the occurrence and distribution of ARGs, metal resistance genes (MRGs) and their associated microbial communities in biofilms formed on different types of plastic, in comparison to associated sediment and water samples taken from the Yangtze Estuary. The results showed that polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) with visible biofilms were highly abundant, and the average absolute abundance of most tested ARGs in the biofilms was higher than that in the sediment and water, indicating that biofilms on plastics can act as a reservoir for ARGs. Moreover, the biofilms on PE had a higher relative abundance of ARGs, compared to those on other plastics, and Firmicutes on PE may be potential hosts for these ARGs. Furthermore, Bacillus, Mycobacterium and Pseudomonas may be multi-resistance genera on plastics, and tetA and tetW may have more potential hosts on PET and PP. Metals, total phosphorus and salinity may be the major environmental factors regulating ARGs in biofilms formed on plastics. The results provide new insights into evaluating the risks caused by plastic wastes and ARGs in biofilms formed on plastics in estuarine environment.

RP11‑619L19.2 promotes colon cancer development by regulating the miR‑1271‑5p/CD164 axis

Colon cancer (CC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality in China and western countries. Several studies have demonstrated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in cancer development. However, the function of lncRNA RP11-619L19.2 in colon cancer remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression pattern, function and underlying mechanism of action of RP11-619L19.2 in CC development and metastasis. RP11-619L19.2 was found to be highly expressed in CC tissues and cell lines, and it was associated with advanced TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. Furthermore, knockdown of RP11-619L19.2 inhibited CC cell proliferation, migration, invasion and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). It was also observed that RP11-619L19.2 was reciprocally repressed by miR-1271-5p. Of note, miR-1271-5p negatively regulated CD164 expression by directly targeting the 3′-untranslated region of CD164. Overexpression of CD164 reversed the antimetastatic activity of RP11-619L19.2 knockdown in CC cells. Mechanistically, it was demonstrated that lncRNA RP11-619L19.2 played an oncogenic role and promoted CC development and metastasis by regulating the miR-1271-5p/CD164 axis and EMT. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicated that RP11-619L19.2 regulates CD164 expression and EMT by sponging miR-1271-5p, which may provide novel targets for lncRNA-directed diagnosis and therapy for patients with CC.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and their associated environmental factors in the Yangtze Estuary, China: From inlet to outlet

The occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and their associated environmental factors in estuaries are poorly understood. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed ARGs in both water and sediments from inlet to outlet of the Yangtze Estuary, China. The relative abundances of ARGs were higher in the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) than other sites, implying that suspended particulate matter (SPM) was the major reservoir for ARGs in water. ARGs showed an increasing trend from inlet to outlet in sediments. Positively correlation between intI1 and sul1 in both water and sediments indicated that sul1 may be regulated by intI1. Correlation analysis and redundancy analysis showed that the spatial variations of estuarine ARGs were positively correlated with sample properties (e.g., temperature, SPM, pH) and chemical pollutants (e.g., heavy metals and antibiotic residues), among which chemical pollutants were the major drivers for the ARG distribution in both water and sediments.

Agrin promotes the proliferation, invasion and migration of rectal cancer cells via the WNT signaling pathway to contribute to rectal cancer progression

Rectal cancer is the most common malignant tumor in the digestive system with rapidly metastasis and highly recurrence. Agrin (AGRN) is a proteoglycan involving in a large number of human cancers. However, how AGRN regulates the progression of rectal cancer remains largely unknown. We aimed to determine the biological role of AGRN and its mechanism in rectal cancer. AGRN expression in rectal cancer tissues was detected based on TCGA. The survival curve was plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method. qRT-PCR and western blot were utilized to examine the expression level of AGRN in cells. Cell proliferation, clonogenic ability, invasion, and migration of rectal cancer cells were analyzed by CCK-8, colony formation and transwell experiments. GSEA was employed for the analysis of the potential pathways-related with AGRN in rectal cancer. The activity of WNT pathway was determined by western blot. AGRN expression was dramatically increased in rectal cancer, and its up-regulation was associated with poorer prognosis of rectal cancer patients. AGRN expression was an independent factor for the prognosis of rectal cancer. AGRN inhibition suppressed rectal cancer cell growth, invasion, and migration, whereas AGRN overexpression facilitated these behaviors of rectal cancer cells in vitro. Mechanistically, WNT signaling pathway was enriched in high AGRN-expressing patients with rectal cancer. AGRN elevated the activity of WNT pathway through increasing Cyclin D1, C-Myc, p-GSK-3β, and p-β-catenin expression. Our present study indicated that AGRN might function as an oncogenic indicator in rectal cancer via activating the WNT pathway, which would help develop optimized therapeutic therapies for rectal cancer.
