Abstract
Flea beetles of the genus Psylliodes have evolved specialized interactions with plant species belonging to several distantly related families, mainly Brassicaceae, Solanaceae, and Fagaceae. This diverse host use indicates that Psylliodes flea beetles are able to cope with different chemical defense metabolites, including glucosinolates, the characteristic defense metabolites of Brassicaceae. Here we investigated the evolution of host use and the emergence of a glucosinolate-specific detoxification mechanism in Psylliodes flea beetles. In phylogenetic analyses, Psylliodes species clustered into four major clades, three of which contained mainly species specialized on either Brassicaceae, Solanaceae, or Fagaceae. Most members of the fourth clade have broader host use, including Brassicaceae and Poaceae as major host plant families. Ancestral state reconstructions suggest that Psylliodes flea beetles were initially associated with Brassicaceae and then either shifted to Solanaceae or Fagaceae, or expanded their host repertoire to Poaceae. Despite a putative ancestral association with Brassicaceae, we found evidence that the evolution of glucosinolate-specific detoxification enzymes coincides with the radiation of Psylliodes on Brassicaceae, suggesting that these are not required for using Brassicaceae as hosts but could improve the efficiency of host use by specialized Psylliodes species.

Abstract
With more than 36,000 species, the longhorned beetles (family Cerambycidae) are a mega-diverse lineage of mostly xylophagous insects, all of which are represented by the sole sequenced genome of the Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis; Lamiinae). Their successful radiation has been linked to their ability to degrade plant cell wall components using a range of so-called plant cell wall-degrading enzymes (PCWDEs). Our previous analysis of larval gut transcriptomes demonstrated that cerambycid beetles horizontally acquired genes encoding PCWDEs from various microbial donors; these genes evolved through multiple duplication events to form gene families. To gain further insights into the evolution of these gene families during the Cerambycidae radiation, we assembled draft genomes for four beetle species belonging to three subfamilies using long-read nanopore sequencing. All the PCWDE-encoding genes we annotated from the corresponding larval gut transcriptomes were present in these draft genomes. We confirmed that the newly discovered horizontally acquired glycoside hydrolase family 7 (GH7), subfamily 26 of GH43 (GH43_26), and GH53 (all of which are absent from the A. glabripennis genome) were indeed encoded by these beetles' genome. Most of the PCWDE-encoding genes of bacterial origin gained introns after their transfer into the beetle genome. Altogether, we show that draft genome assemblies generated from nanopore long-reads offer meaningful information to the study of the evolution of gene families in insects. We anticipate that our data will support studies aiming to better understand the biology of the Cerambycidae and other beetles in general.

Abstract
Hybrid plasmonic devices involve a nanostructured metal supporting localized surface plasmons to amplify light-matter interaction, and a non-plasmonic material to functionalize charge excitations. Application-relevant epitaxial heterostructures, however, give rise to ballistic ultrafast dynamics that challenge the conventional semiclassical understanding of unidirectional nanometal-to-substrate energy transfer. Epitaxial Au nanoislands are studied on WSe2 with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction: this combination of techniques resolves material, energy, and momentum of charge-carriers and phonons excited in the heterostructure. A strong non-linear plasmon-exciton interaction that transfers the energy of sub-bandgap photons very efficiently to the semiconductor is observed, leaving the metal cold until non-radiative exciton recombination heats the nanoparticles on hundreds of femtoseconds timescales. The results resolve a multi-directional energy exchange on timescales shorter than the electronic thermalization of the nanometal. Electron-phonon coupling and diffusive charge-transfer determine the subsequent energy flow. This complex dynamics opens perspectives for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications, while providing a constraining experimental testbed for state-of-the-art modelling.

Abstract
The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) is the recognised intergovernmental standard-setting organisation for animal health and welfare. The WOAH mandate is to support its members in the prevention of the spread of animal diseases of concern, as listed in the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (Terrestrial Code). Once a disease, infection or infestation is listed, national Veterinary Authorities have the obligation regularly to notify WOAH of the presence or absence of the listed disease. In regard to insects, the scope of the Terrestrial Code limits its recommendations to preserving the health of bees (species of the genus Apis, extended to the genus Bombus and to the stingless bees for one disease). However, it does not include standards to mitigate the potential animal health risks associated with the international trade of other insects. A description of the standard-setting process and a review of the history of the standards for bee health highlight the resources and requirements to expand the scope of the Terrestrial Code to include recommendations for animal health risk mitigation measures for the safety of international trade in insects. Any initiative to develop guidance on insect trade should include WOAH in its role as the sole global standard-setting organisation on animal health and welfare matters. This aligns with the WOAH commitment to a One Health approach.

Abstract
Herbivorous insects have evolved counteradaptations to overcome the chemical defenses of their host plants. Several of these counteradaptations have been elucidated at the molecular level, in particular for insects specialized on cruciferous host plants. While the importance of these counteradaptations for host plant colonization is well established, little is known about their microevolutionary dynamics in the field. In particular, it is not known whether and how host plant diversity shapes diversity in insect counteradaptations. In this study, we examine patterns of host plant use and insect counteradaptation in three Pieris butterfly species across Japan. The larvae of these butterflies express nitrile-specifier protein (NSP) and its paralog major allergen (MA) in their gut to overcome the highly diversified glucosinolate-myrosinase defense system of their cruciferous host plants. Pieris napi and Pieris melete colonize wild Brassicaceae whereas Pieris rapae typically uses cultivated Brassica as a host, regardless of the local composition of wild crucifers. As expected, NSP and MA diversity was independent of the local composition of wild Brassicaceae in P. rapae. In contrast, NSP diversity correlated with local host plant diversity in both species that preferred wild Brassicaceae. P. melete and P. napi both revealed two distinct major NSP alleles, which shaped diversity among local populations, albeit with different evolutionary trajectories. In comparison, MA showed no indication for local adaptation. Altogether, MA appeared to be evolutionary more conserved than NSP, suggesting that both genes play different roles in diverting host plant chemical defense.

Abstract
Belowground herbivores are overseen and underestimated, even though they can cause significant economic losses in agriculture. The cabbage root fly Delia radicum (Anthomyiidae) is a common pest in Brassica species, including agriculturally important crops, such as oilseed rape. The damage is caused by the larvae, which feed specifically on the taproots of Brassica plants until they pupate. The adults are aboveground-living generalists feeding on pollen and nectar. Female flies are attracted by chemical cues in Brassica plants for oviposition. An assembled and annotated genome can elucidate which genetic mechanisms underlie the adaptation of D. radicum to its host plants and their specific chemical defenses, in particular isothiocyanates. Therefore, we assembled, annotated and analyzed the D. radicum genome using a combination of different Next Generation Sequencing and bioinformatic approaches. We assembled a chromosome-level D. radicum genome using PacBio and Hi-C Illumina sequence data. Combining Canu and 3D-DNA genome assembler, we constructed a 1.3 Gbp genome with an N50 of 242 Mbp and 6 pseudo-chromosomes. To annotate the assembled D. radicum genome, we combined homology-, transcriptome- and ab initio-prediction approaches. In total, we annotated 13,618 genes that were predicted by at least two approaches. We analyzed egg, larval, pupal and adult transcriptomes in relation to life-stage specific molecular functions. This high-quality annotated genome of D. radicum is a first step to understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying host plant adaptation. As such, it will be an important resource to find novel and sustainable approaches to reduce crop losses to these pests.

Abstract
Background Hepatectomy with vascular resection (VR) for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCC) is a challenging procedure. However, only a few reports on this procedure have been published and its clinical significance has not been fully evaluated. Methods Patients undergoing surgical resection for PHCC from 2002–2017 were studied. The surgical outcomes of VR and non-VR groups were compared. Results Some 238 patients were included. VR was performed in 85 patients. The resected vessels were hepatic artery alone (31 patients), portal vein alone (37 patients) or both (17 patients). The morbidity rates were almost the same in the VR (49.4 per cent) and non-VR (43.8 per cent) groups (P = 0.404). The mortality rates of VR (3.5 per cent) and non-VR (3.3 per cent) were also comparable (P > 0.999). The median survival time (MST) was 45 months in the non-VR group and 36 months in VR group (P = 0.124). Among patients in whom tumour involvement was suspected on preoperative imaging and whose carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) value was 37 U/ml or less, MST in the VR group was significantly longer than that in the non-VR group (50 versus 34 months, P = 0.017). In contrast, when the CA19-9 value was greater than 37 U/ml, MST of the VR and non-VR groups was comparable (28 versus 29 months, P = 0.520). Conclusion Hepatectomy with VR for PHCC can be performed in a highly specialized hepatobiliary centre with equivalent short- and long-term outcomes to hepatectomy without VR.

Abstract
We report a chromosome-level assembly for Pieris macdunnoughii, a North American butterfly whose involvement in an evolutionary trap imposed by an invasive Eurasian mustard has made it an emerging model system for studying maladaptation in plant-insect interactions. Assembled using nearly 100× coverage of Oxford Nanopore long reads, the contig-level assembly comprised 106 contigs totaling 316,549,294 bases, with an N50 of 5.2 Mb. We polished the assembly with PoolSeq Illumina short-read data, demonstrating for the first time the comparable performance of individual and pooled short reads as polishing data sets. Extensive synteny between the reported contig-level assembly and a published, chromosome-level assembly of the European butterfly Pieris napi allowed us to generate a pseudochromosomal assembly of 47 contigs, placing 91.1% of our 317 Mb genome into a chromosomal framework. Additionally, we found support for a Z chromosome arrangement in P. napi, showing that the fusion event leading to this rearrangement predates the split between European and North American lineages of Pieris butterflies. This genome assembly and its functional annotation lay the groundwork for future research into the genetic basis of adaptive and maladaptive egg-laying behavior by P. macdunnoughii, contributing to our understanding of the susceptibility and responses of insects to evolutionary traps.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy strongly increases the cross section of Raman scattering and infrared absorption, overcoming the limited sensitivity and resolution of these two powerful analytic tools. While surface-enhanced setups with maximum enhancement have been studied widely in recent years, substrates with reproducible, uniform enhancement have received less attention although they are required in many applications. Here, we show that plasmonic supercrystals are an excellent platform for enhanced spectroscopy because they possess a high density of hotspots in the electric field. We describe the near field inside the supercrystal within the framework of plasmon polaritons that form due to strong light-matter interaction. From the polariton resonances we predict resonances in the far-field enhancement for Raman scattering and infrared absorption. We verify our predictions by measuring the vibrations of polystyrene molecules embedded in supercrystals of gold nanoparticles. The intensity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering is uniform within 10% across the crystal with a peak integrated enhancement of up to 300 and a peak hotspot enhancement of 105. The supercrystal polaritons induce pairs of incoming and outgoing resonances in the enhanced cross section as we demonstrate experimentally by measuring surface-enhanced Raman scattering with multiple laser wavelengths across the polariton resonance. The infrared absorption of polystyrene is likewise enhanced inside the supercrystals with a maximum enhancement of 400%. We show with a coupled oscillator model that the increase originates from the combined effects of hotspot formation and the excitation of standing polariton waves. Our work clearly relates the structural and optical properties of plasmonic supercrystals and shows that such crystals are excellent hosts and substrates for the uniform and predictable enhancement of vibrational spectra.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection is associated with a high risk of posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF). However, the utility of the remnant liver volume (RLV) in cholangiocarcinoma has not been studied intensively. METHODS Patients who underwent major hepatectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection between 2002 and 2018 were reviewed. The RLV was divided by body surface area (BSA) to normalize individual physical differences. Risk factors for clinically relevant PHLF were evaluated with special reference to the RLV/BSA. RESULTS A total of 289 patients were included. The optimal cut-off value for RLV/BSA was determined to be 300 ml/m2. Thirty-two patients (11.1 per cent) developed PHLF. PHLF was more frequent in patients with an RLV/BSA below 300 ml/m2 than in those with a value of 300 ml/m2 or greater: 19 of 87 (22 per cent) versus 13 of 202 (6.4 per cent) (P < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, RLV/BSA below 300 ml/m2 (P = 0.013), future liver remnant plasma clearance rate of indocyanine green less than 0.075 (P = 0.031), and serum albumin level below 3.5 g/dl (P = 0.015) were identified as independent risk factors for PHLF. Based on these risk factors, patients were classified into three subgroups with low (no factors), moderate (1-2 factors), and high (3 factors) risk of PHLF, with PHLF rates of 1.8, 14.8 and 63 per cent respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION An RLV/BSA of 300 ml/m2 is a simple predictor of PHLF in patients undergoing hepatectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection.

Abstract
Herbivorous insects are thought to have evolved counteradaptations to conquer chemical defenses in their host plants in a stepwise co-evolutionary process. Papilio butterflies use CYP6B gene family members to metabolize furanocoumarins in their Rutaceae or Apiaceae host plants. CYP6Bs have functionally diverged among Papilio species to be able to metabolite diverse types of furanocoumarins in their host plants. In this study, we examined the diversification and selection patterns of CYP6B among nine Papilio species in Japan (eight Rutaceae specialists and one Apiaceae specialist) and their association with host plant spectra and furanocoumarin profiles. We compared host plant spectrum of eight Rutaceae feeding Papilio species and also performed a furanocoumarin profiling of their host plants. In addition, we reconstructed CYP6B gene phylogeny and performed selection analysis based on the transcriptome data of those nine Papilio species. Among Rutaceae-feeding Papilio species, host plant spectrum differences were correlated with their furanocoumarin profiles. However, all tested Papilio species had similar duplicated sets of CYP6B, with no apparent lineage-specific or host plant-specific pattern of CYP6B diversification. Selection analysis showed a signature of positive selection on a CYP6B branch. The positively selected sites located at predicted substrate recognition sites and we also found that these CYP6B genes were observed only in Rutaceae-feeding species. These findings indicate that most CYP6B diversification occurred in ancestral species of these Papilio species, possibly in association with specific host plant chemical defenses and subsequent gene loss due to host specialization. These processes would have shaped the complex diversification patterns of the CYP6B gene family in Papilio butterflies. Our results also show potentially important CYP6B clades among Papilio species which likely to have diverged functions and associated with host plant phytochemicals in ancestral Papilio species.

Abstract
The Weyl semimetal (WSM), which hosts pairs of Weyl points and accompanying Berry curvature in momentum space near Fermi level, is expected to exhibit novel electromagnetic phenomena. Although the large optical/electronic responses such as nonlinear optical effects and intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) have recently been demonstrated indeed, the conclusive evidence for their topological origins has remained elusive. Here, we report the gigantic magneto-optical (MO) response arising from the topological electronic structure with intense Berry curvature in magnetic WSM Co3Sn2S2. The low-energy MO spectroscopy and the first-principles calculation reveal that the interband transitions on the nodal rings connected to the Weyl points show the resonance of the optical Hall conductivity and give rise to the giant intrinsic AHE in dc limit. The terahertz Faraday and infrared Kerr rotations are found to be remarkably enhanced by these resonances with topological electronic structures, demonstrating the novel low-energy optical response inherent to the magnetic WSM.

Abstract
The assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles into ordered 2D- and 3D-superlattices could pave the way towards new tailored materials for plasmonic sensing, photocatalysis and manipulation of light on the nanoscale. The properties of such materials strongly depend on their geometry, and accordingly straightforward protocols to obtain precise plasmonic superlattices are highly desirable. Here, we synthesize large areas of crystalline mono-, bi- and multilayers of gold nanoparticles >20 nm with a small number of defects. The superlattices can be described as hexagonal crystals with standard deviations of the lattice parameter below 1%. The periodic arrangement within the superlattices leads to new well-defined collective plasmon-polariton modes. The general level of achieved superlattice quality will be of benefit for a broad range of applications, ranging from fundamental studies of light-matter interaction to optical metamaterials and substrates for surface-enhanced spectroscopies.

Abstract
Magnetic skyrmions, topological solitons characterized by a two-dimensional swirling spin texture, have recently attracted attention as stable particle-like objects. In a three-dimensional system, a skyrmion can extend in the third dimension forming a robust and flexible string structure, whose unique topology and symmetry are anticipated to host nontrivial functional responses. Here we experimentally demonstrate the coherent propagation of spin excitations along skyrmion strings for the chiral-lattice magnet Cu2OSeO3. We find that this propagation is directionally non-reciprocal and the degree of non-reciprocity, as well as group velocity and decay length, are strongly dependent on the character of the excitation modes. These spin excitations can propagate over a distance exceeding 50 μm, demonstrating the excellent long-range ordered nature of the skyrmion-string structure. Our combined experimental and theoretical analyses offer a comprehensive account of the propagation dynamics of skyrmion-string excitations and suggest the possibility of unidirectional information transfer along such topologically protected strings.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, and those afflicted have reduced quality of life, functional status, and cardiac performance. The patients with AF have a high risk of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease. Although the prevalence of AF is increasing, cognitive disorders are also on the rise in tandem with the aging of the population. The patients with dementia have also experienced lower the quality of life and have increased mortality. Technetium 99m ECD brain perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (99mTc-ECD brain perfusion SPECT) is a useful modality for diagnosing dementia and identifying high risk patients with mild cognitive impairment. However, there are few reports about the relationship between the value of Z score calculated by 99mTc-ECD brain perfusion SPECT and prognosis of patients with AF and dementia.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic values of brain perfusion using 99mTc-ECD SPECT in patients with AF and dementia.
Methods
Among 405 consecutive patients who were diagnosed as AF in cardiac outpatients and subsequently diagnosed as dementia using Mini-Mental State Examination by neurologists or psychiatrists, we identified 170 patients (81 ± 10 years) who underwent 99mTc-ECD brain perfusion SPECT for the current study. Of those, 73, 73, and 24 were diagnosed as Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), vascular dementia (VD), and non-specified dementia respectively. Multivariate Cox model was used to assess if higher Z score by 99mTc-ECD brain perfusion SPECT and clinical parameters were associated with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) including cardiac death, myocardial infarction, hospitalization for heart failure, and stroke. Sub-analyses of multivariate Cox models by AD or VD were also assessed. The cut-off values of Z score were determined using area under the curve by a receiver operating characteristic analysis based on MACE occurrences.
Results
During a mean follow-up of 1258 ± 1044 days, 62 MACE occurred. There was not significant difference of MACE between AD and VD (33%, vs. 44%, p = 0.153). By multivariable Cox model, the higher Z score of temporal-occipital-pariental lobe was associated with increased MACE compared to the lower group (HR 2.521, 95% CI 1.465–4.337, p < 0.001). In a sub-analysis of patients with AD, Z score was the most significant prognostic factor for MACE (HR 3.969, 95% CI 1.374–11.468, p = 0.011). The similar trend was observed in those with VD (HR 2.247, 95% CI 1.028–4.913, p = 0.043). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the Z score of temporal-occipital-pariental lobe by 99mTc-ECD brain perfusion SPECT could be a potential prognostic value among patients with AF and dementia, regardless of type of dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The length of tumour-vein contact between the portal-superior mesenteric vein (PV/SMV) and pancreatic head cancer, and its relationship to prognosis in patients undergoing pancreatic surgery, remains controversial. METHODS Patients diagnosed with pancreatic head cancer who were eligible for pancreatoduodenectomy between October 2002 and December 2016 were analysed. The PV/SMV contact was assessed retrospectively on CT. Using the minimum P value approach based on overall survival after surgery, the optimal cut-off value for tumour-vein contact length was identified. RESULTS Among 491 patients included, 462 underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic head cancer. PV/SMV contact with the tumour was detected on preoperative CT in 248 patients (53·7 per cent). Overall survival of patients with PV/SMV contact exceeding 20 mm was significantly worse than that of patients with a contact length of 20 mm or less (median survival time (MST) 23·3 versus 39·3 months; P = 0·012). Multivariable analysis identified PV/SMV contact longer than 20 mm as an independent predictor of poor survival, whereas PV/SMV contact greater than 180° was not a predictive factor. Among patients with a PV/SMV contact length exceeding 20 mm on pretreatment CT, those receiving neoadjuvant therapy had significantly better overall survival than patients who had upfront surgery (MST not reached versus 21·6 months; P = 0·002). CONCLUSION The length of PV/SMV contact predicts survival, and may be used to suggest a role for neoadjuvant therapy to improve prognosis.

Abstract
Specialist herbivores have often evolved highly sophisticated mechanisms to counteract defenses mediated by major plant secondary-metabolites. Plant species of the herbivore host range often display high chemical diversity and it is not well understood how specialist herbivores respond to this chemical diversity. Pieris larvae overcome toxic products from glucosinolate hydrolysis, the major chemical defense of their Brassicaceae hosts, by expressing nitrile-specifier proteins (NSP) in their gut. Furthermore, Pieris butterflies possess so-called major allergen (MA) proteins, which are multi-domain variants of a single domain major allergen (SDMA) protein expressed in the guts of Lepidopteran larvae. Here we show that Pieris larvae fine-tune NSP and MA gene expression depending on the glucosinolate profiles of their Brassicaceae hosts. Although the role of MA is not yet fully understood, the expression levels of NSP and MA in larvae that fed on plants whose glucosinolate composition varied was dramatically changed, whereas levels of SDMA expression remained unchanged. In addition, we found a similar regulation pattern among these genes in larvae feeding on Arabidopsis mutants with different glucosinolate profiles. Our results demonstrate that Pieris larvae appear to use different host plant adaptive genes to overcome a wide range of glucosinolate profiles in their host plants.

Abstract
The tremendous diversity of plants and herbivores has arisen from a coevolutionary relationship characterized by plant defense and herbivore counter adaptation. Pierid butterfly species feed on Brassicales plants that produce glucosinolates as a chemical deterrent against herbivory. In turn, the larvae of pierids have nitrile specifier proteins (NSPs) that are expressed in their gut and disarm glucosinolates. Pierid butterflies are known to have diversified in response to glucosinolate diversification in Brassicales. Therefore, each pierid species is expected to have a spectrum of host plants characterized by specific glucosinolate profiles. In this study, we tested whether the larval performance of different Pieris species, a genus in Pieridae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), was associated with plant defense traits of putative host plants. We conducted feeding assays using larvae of three Pieris species and 10 species of the Brassicaceae family possessing different leaf physical traits and glucosinolate profile measurements. The larvae of Pieris rapae responded differently in the feeding assays compared with the other two Pieris species. This difference was associated with differences in glucosinolate profiles but not with variations in physical traits of the host plants. This result suggests that individual Pieris species are adapted to a subset of glucosinolate profiles within the Brassicaceae. Our results support the idea that the host ranges of Pieris species depend on larval responses to glucosinolate diversification in the host species, supporting the hypothesis of coevolution between butterflies and host plants mediated by the chemical arms race.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Intrahepatic metastasis (IM) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurs via vascular invasion; the tumor diameter that affects the risk of micro intra-hepatic metastasis (MIM) should be larger than that which affects the risk of micro vessel invasion (MVI). The aim of the present study was to determine the optimum tumor diameter cut-off value for predicting the presence of MIM in HCC patients without treatment history and HCC patients with a treatment history and to compare these diameters between cases of MVI and MIM. METHODS This retrospective study included 621 patients without macroscopic vessel invasion or intrahepatic metastasis on preoperative imaging who underwent hepatectomy. The cut-off tumor diameter for predicting the presence of MIM was determined by a receiver operating characteristic curves analysis. RESULTS The optimum cut-off value for predicting the presence of MIM in HCC patients without treatment history was 43 mm. In contrast, the optimum cut-off value for predicting the presence of MIM in HCC patients with a treatment history was 20 mm. Among 46 HCC patients with MIM without treatment history, there were 20 patients with MIM without MVI who were considered to have potential multi-centric (MC) tumors rather than IM. The cumulative overall survival rates in patients with MIM without MVI (potential MC) was significantly better than that in patients with both MIM and MVI (P = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS The tumor diameter cut-off value for predicting MIM differed between HCC patients without treatment history and with a treatment history and slightly smaller than those for predicting MVI beyond our expectation.

Abstract
We have investigated the directional dichroism of magnetic resonance spectra in the polar ferromagnet GaV_{4}S_{8}. While four types of structural domains are energetically degenerated under a zero field, the magnetic resonance for each domain is well separated by applying magnetic fields due to uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Consequently, a directional dichroism as large as 20% is clearly observed without domain cancellation. The present observation therefore demonstrates that not only magnetoelectric monodomain crystals but also magnetoelectric multidomain specimens can be used to realize microwave (optical) diodes owing to the lack of inversion domains.

Abstract
Single molecule dynamics studies have begun to use quantum probes. Single particle analysis using cryo-transmission electron microscopy has dramatically improved the resolution when studying protein structures and is shifting towards molecular motion observations. X-ray free-electron lasers are also being explored as routes for determining single molecule structures of biological entities. Here, we propose a new X-ray single molecule technology that allows observation of molecular internal motion over long time scales, ranging from milliseconds up to 103 seconds. Our method uses both low-dose monochromatic X-rays and nanocrystal labelling technology. During monochromatic X-ray diffraction experiments, the intensity of X-ray diffraction from moving single nanocrystals appears to blink because of Brownian motion in aqueous solutions. X-ray diffraction spots from moving nanocrystals were observed to cycle in and out of the Bragg condition. Consequently, the internal motions of a protein molecule labelled with nanocrystals could be extracted from the time trajectory using this diffracted X-ray blinking (DXB) approach. Finally, we succeeded in distinguishing the degree of fluctuation motions of an individual acetylcholine-binding protein (AChBP) interacting with acetylcholine (ACh) using a laboratory X-ray source.

Abstract
Background Non‐anatomical liver resection (NAR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are treatment options for early‐stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim was to compare the outcomes of NAR and RFA for HCC in patients with three or fewer tumour nodules, each measuring not more than 3 cm in maximum diameter. Methods Eligible patients undergoing NAR or RFA with curative intent between September 2002 and December 2014 were identified. A propensity score‐matching analysis was performed to reduce bias, and outcomes in these patients were analysed. Results From a total of 199 patients, 1:1 propensity score matching identified 70 matched pairs. Patients having NAR had a longer hospital stay (median 10 days versus 4 days for those who had RFA; P < 0·001) and a higher morbidity rate (24 versus 10 per cent respectively; P = 0·042). Patients who had NAR had slightly better recurrence‐free survival but this failed to reach statistical significance in univariable analysis (P = 0·064). There was no significant difference in overall survival between the two groups (P = 0·475). RFA was identified as an independent risk factor for recurrence‐free survival (hazard ratio (HR) 1·57; P = 0·041) in multivariable analysis. Local recurrence was significantly more common in patients receiving RFA (23 versus 1 per cent; P < 0·001). Conclusion RFA was an independent risk factor for shorter recurrence‐free survival, with a significantly higher local recurrence rate than NAR. Despite these differences, overall survival was not affected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cervical pregnancy (CP) is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy. While methotrexate (MTX) is generally the first-line method of choice for clinically stable women, there is still no consensus on the most appropriate treatment for this abnormal pregnancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a single local MTX injection under transvaginal ultrasound guidance for the initial treatment of CP and to assess post-treatment fertility. METHODS We reviewed retrospectively 15 patients with CP treated with local MTX injection under transvaginal ultrasound guidance. In all patients, the serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels were monitored and the gestational sac was evaluated using ultrasonography after treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed as necessary. We evaluated the patients' clinical characteristics and clinical course after treatment, the efficacy of the treatment and the post-treatment fertility in patients desiring subsequent pregnancy. RESULTS The median estimated gestational age at the time of MTX injection was 6 + 2 (range, 5 + 2 to 11 + 0) weeks. All 15 patients were treated successfully, without the need for blood transfusion or surgical procedures; however, three patients required an additional local MTX injection due to a poor decline in serum hCG level following the initial injection, while one patient required uterine artery embolization due to persistent vaginal bleeding and an enlarging gestational sac with blood vessels visible on contrast-enhanced MRI. The mean time following initial MTX injection for hCG normalization was 43.8 (95% CI, 33.3-54.3) days and for resumption of menses was 68.4 (95% CI, 51.9-84.9) days. Seven of the 10 women desiring subsequent pregnancy following treatment had uneventful pregnancy, one became pregnant but miscarried spontaneously at 8 weeks of gestation, one was treated by laparoscopic surgery after diagnosis of a tubal pregnancy and one did not conceive. CONCLUSIONS A single, ultrasound-guided, local MTX injection is apparently effective for the treatment of CP without the need for concomitant procedures or surgical intervention. Abstract
BACKGROUND Some reports have stated that pancreatoduodenectomy for elderly patients have comparable morbidity and mortality to that of young patients. However, the long-term outcomes of these patients have not been fully evaluated, especially for pancreatic head cancer. METHODS A total of 227 patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic head cancer between 2007 and 2014 were included. They were stratified according to age: young (<70 years), elderly (70 to <80 years), and very elderly (≥80 years). The short- and long-term outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS There were no significant differences in terms of morbidity among the three groups. The median disease-free survival times were 15 months in the young, 11 months in the elderly, and 7 months in the very elderly. The disease-free survival of the young patients was significantly better than that in both the elderly and the very elderly (p = 0.012 and p = 0.016). The median overall survival times were 30 months in the young, 20 months in the elderly, and 14 months in the very elderly. The overall survival of the young patients was significantly better than that in both the elderly and the very elderly (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001). The difference was marginal between the elderly and the very elderly (p = 0.053). Multivariate analysis revealed that lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001), age ≥80 years (p = 0.013), lack of adjuvant chemotherapy (p = 0.003), blood transfusion (p = 0.015), and CA 19-9 ≥300 U/ml (p = 0.040) were significant prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS Patient age influenced the survival after pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
The current drastic shortage of donor organs has led to acceptance of extended-criteria donors for transplantation, despite higher risk of primary nonfunction. Here, we report the impact of subnormothermic machine perfusion (SMP) preservation on the protection of >50% macrosteatotic livers. Dietary hepatic steatosis was induced in Wistar rats via 2-day fasting and subsequent 3-day re-feeding with a fat-free, carbohydrate-rich diet. This protocol induces 50-60% macrovesicular steatosis, which should be discarded when preserved via cold storage (CS). The fatty livers were retrieved and preserved for 4 h using either CS in histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate or SMP in polysol solution. Graft functional integrity was evaluated via oxygenated ex vivo reperfusion for 2 h at 37°C. SMP resulted in significant reductions in not only parenchymal alanine aminotransferase (p < 0.001), but also mitochondrial glutamate dehydrogenase (p < 0.001) enzyme release. Moreover, portal venous pressure (p = 0.047), tissue adenosine triphosphate (p = 0.001), bile production (p < 0.001), high-mobility group box protein-1 (p < 0.001), lipid peroxidation, and tissue glutathione were all significantly improved by SMP. Electron microscopy revealed that SMP alleviated deleterious alterations of sinusoidal microvasculature and hepatocellular mitochondria, both of which are characteristic disadvantages associated with steatosis. SMP could protect 50-60% macrosteatotic livers from preservation/reperfusion injury, and may thus represent a new means for expanding available donor pools.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The preoperative serum neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been associated with survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, it is still unclear what the NLR reflects precisely. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between the NLR and TNM stage, and the role of NLR as a prognostic factor after liver resection for HCC.
Methods
This retrospective study enrolled patients who underwent liver resection as initial treatment for HCC. The best cut-off value of serum NLR was determined, and overall survival was compared among patients grouped according to TNM stage (I, II and III).
Results
The best cut-off value for NLR was 2·8. A high preoperative NLR was more frequently associated with poor overall survival than a low preoperative NLR after resection for TNM stage I tumours (5-year survival 45·0 versus 76·4 per cent, P < 0·001), but not stage II (P = 0·283) or stage III (P = 0·155) tumours. Among patients with TNM stage I disease, the proportion of patients with extrahepatic recurrence was greater in the group with a high preoperative NLR than in the low-NLR group (P = 0·006). In multivariable analysis, preoperative NLR was the strongest independent prognostic risk factor for overall survival in TNM stage I (hazard ratio 2·69, 95 per cent c.i. 1·57 to 4·59; P < 0·001).
Conclusion
Preoperative NLR was an important prognostic factor for TNM stage I HCC after liver resection with curative intent. These results suggest that the NLR may reflect the malignant potential of HCC.

Abstract
Background
Several risk factors for complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy have been reported. However, the impact of intraoperative bacterial contamination on surgical outcome after pancreaticoduodenectomy has not been examined in depth.
Methods
This retrospective study included patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy and peritoneal lavage using 7000 ml saline between July 2012 and May 2014. The lavage fluid was subjected to bacterial culture examination. The influence of a positive bacterial culture on surgical-site infection (SSI) and postoperative course was evaluated. Risk factors for positive bacterial cultures were also evaluated.
Results
Forty-six (21·1 per cent) of 218 enrolled patients had a positive bacterial culture of the lavage fluid. Incisional SSI developed in 26 (57 per cent) of these 46 patients and in 13 (7·6 per cent) of 172 patients with a negative lavage culture (P < 0·001). Organ/space SSI developed in 32 patients with a positive lavage culture (70 per cent) and in 43 of those with a negative culture (25·0 per cent) (P < 0·001). Grade B/C pancreatic fistula was observed in 22 (48 per cent) and 48 (27·9 per cent) respectively of patients with positive and negative lavage cultures (P = 0·010). Postoperative hospital stay was longer in patients with a positive lavage culture (28 days versus 21 days in patients with a negative culture; P = 0·028). Multivariable analysis revealed that internal biliary drainage, combined colectomy and a longer duration of surgery were significant risk factors for positive bacterial culture of the lavage fluid.
Conclusion
Intraoperative bacterial contamination has an adverse impact on the development of SSI and grade B/C pancreatic fistula following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Abstract
Through broadband microwave spectroscopy in Faraday geometry, we observe distinct absorption spectra accompanying magnetoelectric (ME) resonance for oppositely propagating microwaves, i.e., directional dichroism, in the multiferroic chiral-lattice magnet Cu_{2}OSeO_{3}. The magnitude of the directional dichroism critically depends on the magnetic-field direction. Such behavior is well accounted for by considering the relative direction of the oscillating electric polarizations induced via the ME effect with respect to microwave electric fields. Directional dichroism in a system with an arbitrary form of ME coupling can be also discussed in the same manner.

Abstract
Although several sex pheromones of the family Geometridae have been characterized, investigations on Japanese species are limited. In order to obtain more information, screening using known sex pheromones and their analogs was carried out. The (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-triunsaturated and (Z,Z)-6,9-diunsaturated hydrocarbons with straight C(19)-C(21) chains were synthesized by the Grignard coupling reaction as a key step starting from linolenic and linoleic acids, respectively. Oxidation of the homoconjugated trienes withm-chloroperoxybenzoic acid yielded a 1∶1∶1 mixture of three monoepoxy derivatives that could be separated by silica gel chromatography. The chemical structure of each positional isomer was confirmed using two-dimensional NMR techniques and MS measurements, which enabled characteristic fragment ions from the isomers to be identified. Field tests using lures incorporating only one of the above six hydrocarbons or nine epoxides were carried out in a forest in Tokyo. Consequently, attraction of male moths of 14 geometrid species in addition to four species in another family, the Noctuidae, was observed. It was concluded that hydrocarbons with a homoconjugated polyene system and the monoepoxy derivatives are important components of sex pheromones produced by Japanese lepidopterous insects, particularly the geometrid moths.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE) is performed to enhance the future remnant liver function (FRLF) and volume (FRLV). However, the volume of the nonembolized liver does not increase enough in some patients, which results in an insufficient FRLF. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictors of insufficient FRLF after PVE for extended hepatectomy. METHODS This retrospective study included 172 patients (107 patients with cholangiocarcinoma, 40 patients with metastatic liver cancer and 25 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma) who underwent PVE before extended hepatectomy. The total liver function was evaluated by measuring the indocyanine green plasma clearance rate (KICG). Computed tomography volumetry was conducted to evaluate the total liver volume and FRLV. The KICG of the future remnant liver (remK) was calculated using the following formula: KICG × FRLV/total liver volume. The safety margin for hepatectomy was set at remK after PVE (post-PVE remK) ≥ 0.05. RESULTS One hundred and twenty-three patients with a post-PVE remK level of >0.05 underwent hepatectomy without postoperative liver failure [sufficient liver regeneration (SLR) group], and 9 patients with a post-PVE remK level of <0.05 did not due to insufficient FRLF [insufficient liver regeneration (ILR) group]. In the SLR group, the KICG values did not change after PVE (median, 0.144-0.146, p = 0.523); however, the %FRLV and remK increased significantly (35.0-44.3%, p < 0.001 and 0.0488-0.0610, p < 0001, respectively). In contrast, in the ILR group, the KICG values decreased significantly (0.128-0.108, p = 0.021) and the %FRLV increased marginally (27.4-32.6%, p = 0.051). As a result, the remK did not increase significantly (0.0351-0.0365, p = 0.213). A receiver operating characteristic curve demonstrated an remK value of 0.04 obtained before PVE (pre-PVE remK) to be the optimal cutoff point for defective liver regeneration. The univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that a pre-PVE remK value of <0.04 was a factor for ILR. It was also correlated with postoperative liver failure in the analysis of the patients who underwent hepatectomy. CONCLUSIONS The patients in the ILR group did not achieve SLR after PVE due to a significant decrease in the KICG and an insufficient increase in %FRLV. A pre-PVE remK value of <0.04 is a useful predictor of insufficient regeneration of the nonembolized liver, even after PVE.

Abstract
Few studies have examined the long-term outcomes and prognostic factors associated with pediatric living living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) using reduced and hyper-reduced left lateral segment grafts. We conducted a retrospective, single-center assessment of the outcomes of this procedure, as well as clinical factors that influenced graft and patient survival. Between September 2000 and December 2009, 49 patients (median age: 7 months, weight: 5.45 kg) underwent LDLT using reduced (partial left lateral segment; n = 5, monosegment; n = 26), or hyper-reduced (reduced monosegment grafts; n = 18) left lateral segment grafts. In all cases, the estimated graft-to-recipient body weight ratio of the left lateral segment was more than 4%, as assessed by preoperative computed tomography volumetry, and therefore further reduction was required. A hepatic artery thrombosis occurred in two patients (4.1%). Portal venous complications occurred in eight patients (16.3%). The overall patient survival rate at 1, 3 and 10 years after LDLT were 83.7%, 81.4% and 78.9%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that recipient age of less than 2 months and warm ischemic time of more than 40 min affected patient survival. Pediatric LDLT using reduced and hyper-reduced left lateral segment grafts appears to be a feasible option with acceptable graft survival and vascular complication rates.

Abstract
We have investigated the low-energy dynamics of the triangular lattice of Skyrmions in a helimagnetic insulator Cu2OSeO3 in terms of microwave response. We have observed two elementary excitations of the Skyrmion with different polarization characteristics: the counterclockwise circulating mode at 1 GHz with the magnetic field polarization parallel to the Skyrmion plane and the breathing mode at 1.5 GHz with a perpendicular magnetic field polarization. These modes reflect the topological nature of Skyrmions and may play a central role in the Skyrmion dynamics.
