Nonlinear optical diode effect in a magnetic Weyl semimetal

Diode effects are of great interest for both fundamental physics and modern technologies. Electrical diode effects (nonreciprocal transport) have been observed in Weyl systems. Optical diode effects arising from the Weyl fermions have been theoretically considered but not probed experimentally. Here, we report the observation of a nonlinear optical diode effect (NODE) in the magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi, where the magnetization introduces a pronounced directionality in the nonlinear optical second-harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate a six-fold change of the measured SHG intensity between opposite propagation directions over a bandwidth exceeding 250 meV. Supported by density-functional theory, we establish the linearly dispersive bands emerging from Weyl nodes as the origin of this broadband effect. We further demonstrate current-induced magnetization switching and thus electrical control of the NODE. Our results advance ongoing research to identify novel nonlinear optical/transport phenomena in magnetic topological materials and further opens new pathways for the unidirectional manipulation of light.

Sex identification of ducklings based on acoustic signals

Sex identification of ducklings is a critical step in the poultry farming industry, and accurate sex identification is beneficial for precise breeding and cost savings. In this study, a method for identifying the sex of ducklings based on acoustic signals was proposed. In the first step, duckling vocalizations were collected and an improved spectral subtraction method and high-pass filtering were applied to reduce the influence of noise. Then, duckling vocalizations were automatically detected by using a double-threshold endpoint detection method with 3 parameters: short-time energy (STE), short-time zero-crossing rate (ZCR), and duration (D). Following the extraction of Mel-Spectrogram features from duckling vocalizations, an improved Res2Net deep learning algorithm was used for sex classification. This algorithm was introduced with the Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanism and Ghost module to improve the bottleneck of Res2Net, thereby improving the model accuracy and reducing the number of parameters. The ablative experimental results showed that the introduction of the SE attention mechanism improved the model accuracy by 2.01%, while the Ghost module reduced the number of model parameters by 7.26M and the FLOPs by 0.85G. Moreover, this algorithm was compared with 5 state-of-the-art (SOTA) algorithms, and the results showed that the proposed algorithm has the best cost-effectiveness, with accuracy, recall, specificity, number of parameters, and FLOPs of 94.80, 94.92, 94.69, 18.91M, and 3.46G, respectively. After that, the vocalization detection score and the average confidence strategy were used to predict the sex of individual ducklings, and the accuracy of the proposed model reached 96.67%. In conclusion, the method proposed in this study can effectively detect the sex of ducklings and serve as a reference for automated sex identification of ducklings.

Global prevalence of poor sleep quality in cancer patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Poor sleep quality is common in patients with cancer, but the prevalence rates varied widely across studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality among patients with cancer.

METHODS

Systematic literature searches were independently conducted in the major databases (Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE and PsycINFO). Studies that reported the prevalence of poor sleep quality in patients with cancer were analyzed using a random effects model. Funnel plots and Egger's tests were used to assess publication bias. Statistical analyses were performed using R software.

RESULTS

A total of 59 epidemiological studies involving 16,223 patients were included. The pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality in patients with cancer was 57.4% [95% confidence interval (CI): 53.3% - 61.6%]. Additionally, three comparative studies with 372 patients and 412 healthy controls were included. Compared to healthy controls, patients with cancer had a significantly higher risk for poor sleep quality [odd ratio (OR) = 3.0; 95%CI: 1.2-7.2; P < 0.05]. Subgroup analyses of the studies revealed that studies from Middle East & North Africa region and low income countries, and on gynecological cancer as well as those with a lower cut-off value of sleep quality (all P < 0.01) reported a higher prevalence of poor sleep quality. Meta-regression analyses showed that higher prevalence of poor sleep quality was associated with higher prevalence of comorbid depression (P < 0.05) and anxiety (P < 0.01), but was associated with a lower education level (P < 0.05) and alcohol use ratio (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Poor sleep quality is common among patients with cancer. Considering the overall high prevalence rate and negative impact of poor sleep quality, appropriate measures to identify and improve poor sleep quality are needed to enhance the clinical outcomes in this group.

[Surgical strategies and efficacy analysis for aortic dissection complicating intractable mesenteric artery ischemia]

Objective: To explore the surgical strategies and clinical efficacy for aortic dissection combined with refractory superior mesenteric artery (SMA) ischemia. Methods: This is a retrospective case series study. Clinical data of 24 patients with aortic dissection and refractory SMA ischemia admitted to the Department of Vascular Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University from August 2010 to August 2020 were retrospectively collected. Of the 24 patients, 21 were males and 3 were females, with an age of (50.3±9.9) years (range: 44 to 72 years).Among them, 9 cases were Stanford type A aortic dissection, and 15 cases were type B. All patients underwent CT angiography upon admission, and based on imaging characteristics, they were classified into three types. Type Ⅰ: severe stenosis/occlusion of the SMA true lumen only; Type Ⅱ: stenosis of the true lumens in the descending aorta and SMA (isolated type); Type Ⅲ: stenosis of the true lumens in the thoracoabdominal aorta and SMA (continuation type). Surgical procedures, complications, mortality, and reintervention rates were recorded. Results: Among the 24 patients, 17 (70.8%) were classified as Type Ⅰ, 4 (16.7%) as Type Ⅱ, and 3 (12.5%) as Type Ⅲ. Fourteen cases of Type Ⅰ underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair combined with SMA stent implantation. Additionally, 3 Type Ⅰ and 1 Type Ⅱ patients underwent only SMA reconstruction (with one case of chronic TAAD treated with iliac artery-SMA bypass surgery). Moreover, 3 Type Ⅱ and 3 Type Ⅲ patients underwent descending aorta combined with SMA stent implantation. There were 5 patients (20.8%) who underwent small bowel resection, either in the same sitting or in a staged procedure. During hospitalization, 4 patients died, resulting in a mortality rate of 16.7%. Among these cases, two patients succumbed to severe intestinal ischemia resulting in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The follow-up duration was (46±9) months (range: 13 to 72 months). During the follow-up, 2 patients died, unrelated to intestinal ischemia. The 5-year freedom from reintervention survival rate was 86.1%, and the 5-year cumulative survival rate was 82.6%. Conclusions: Patients with aortic dissection and refractory SMA ischemia have a high perioperative mortality. However, implementing appropriate surgical strategies according to different clinical scenarios can reduce mortality and alleviate intestinal ischemia.

Three-Motif Molecular Junction Type Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), with the features of flexible structure regulation and easy introduction of functional groups, have aroused broad interest in the field of photocatalysis. However, due to the low light absorption intensity, low photoelectron conversion efficiency, and lack of suitable active sites, it remains a great challenge to achieve efficient photocatalytic aerobic oxidation reactions. Herein, based on reticular chemistry, we rationally designed a series of three-motif molecular junction type COFs, which formed dual photosensitizer coupled redox molecular junctions containing multifunctional COF photocatalysts. Significantly, due to the strong light adsorption ability of dual photosensitizer units and integrated oxidation and reduction features, the PY-BT COF exhibited the highest activity for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation. Especially, it achieved a photocatalytic benzylamine conversion efficiency of 99.9% in 2.5 h, which is much higher than that of the two-motif molecular junctions with only one photosensitizer or redox unit lacking COFs. The mechanism of selective aerobic oxidation was studied through comprehensive experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that the photoinduced electron transfer occurred from PY and then through triphenylamine to BT. Furthermore, the thermodynamics energy for benzylamine oxidation on PY-BT COF was much lower than that for others, which confirmed the synergistic effect of dual photosensitizer coupled redox molecular junction COFs. This work provided a new strategy for the design of functional COFs with three-motif molecular junctions and also represented a new insight into the multifunctional COFs for organic catalytic reactions.

Poor sleep quality in schizophrenia patients: A systematic review and meta-analyses of epidemiological and case-control studies

OBJECTIVE

Poor sleep quality is common in patients with schizophrenia but estimated prevalence rates in this population have been mixed. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the prevalence of poor sleep quality in schizophrenia samples and moderators of prevalence from epidemiological studies as well as the risk of poor sleep quality in schizophrenia patients based on case-control studies.

METHODS

Both international (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, EMBASE) and Chinese databases [Chinese Nation knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WANFANG] were systematically searched. Studies that estimated the prevalence of poor sleep quality in schizophrenia were analyzed using a random effects model. Funnel plots and Egger's tests were used to assess publication bias. Statistical analyses were performed using R software.

RESULTS

In total, 23 epidemiological studies and nine case-control studies were included. Based on the epidemiological studies, the pooled overall prevalence of poor sleep quality was 63.4 % [95 % confidence interval (CI): 57.0 %-69.9 %]. Additionally, based on the nine case-control studies, schizophrenia patients had a significantly higher risk for poor sleep quality compared to healthy controls [odd ratio (OR) = 4.5; 95%CI: 2.4-8.3; P < 0.0001].

CONCLUSION

Poor sleep quality is common among schizophrenia patients. Considering negative outcomes caused by poor sleep quality, regular screening on poor sleep quality should be conducted and effective interventions should be provided to those in need.

[Relationship between blood glucose variation, collateral circulation and Batman score and prognosis after mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent in acute posterior vascular occlusive stroke]

Objective: To explore the relationship between blood glucose variability, collateral circulation and basilar artery computed scan angiography score (Batman) and prognosis of mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent in patients with large vascular occlusive APCI. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 113 patients with large vessel occlusive APCI who underwent Solitaire stent mechanical thrombectomy in the Department of Neurology of Nanyang Central Hospital from March 2021 to July 2022. According to the prognosis, they were divided into outcome group (46 cases) and adverse group (67 cases). Evaluate the prognosis based on the Modified Rankin Scale three months after the surgery. The differences in collateral circulation, GV and Batman score between the two groups were compared, and the related factors affecting the prognosis of large vessel occlusive APCI patients treated with Solitaire stent mechanical thrombectomy were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression model. Results: The age of 113 patients with acute large vessel occlusive APCI was (65.3±8.9) years old. The proportion of female was 34.5% (39 cases). Compared with the outcome group, the adverse group had a lower proportion of collateral circulation [40 cases (87.0%) vs 47 cases (70.2%)], higher GV score [(25.19±3.54) vs (30.36±4.11) points], lower Batman score [(7.49±1.52) vs (6.65±1.33) points], higher proportion of atrial fibrillation history [16 cases (23.9%) vs 4 cases (8.7%)], higher National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score at admission [(8.33±0.74) vs (7.25±0.92) points], larger core infarct volume [(32.57±4.87) vs (29.54±5.14) ml], and longer time from admission to vascular recanalization [(123.52±31.17) vs (102.47±29.54) min] (all P<0.05). Atrial fibrillation history, core infarct volume, NIHSS score at admission, time from admission to vascular recanalization, glycemic variability, collateral circulation, and Batman score were related factors for the prognosis of large vessel occlusive APCI patients treated with Solitaire stent mechanical thrombectomy, with ORvalues (95%CI) of 1.383 (1.124-1.641), 1.166 (1.007-1.350), 4.777 (1.856-12.297), 3.068 (2.379-3.757), 1.477 (1.209-1.806), 0.742 (0.654-0.831), and 0.717 (0.214-1.221), respectively (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Blood glucose variation is a risk factor for prognosis of mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent in patients with large vascular occlusive APCI, and collateral circulation and Batman score are protective factors.

Depression and anxiety among caregivers of psychiatric patients during the late stage of the COVID-19 pandemic: A perspective from network analysis

BACKGROUND

Depressive and anxiety symptoms (depression and anxiety hereafter) are common among psychiatric patients and their caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Network analysis is a novel method to assess the associations between psychiatric syndromes/disorders at the symptom level. This study examined depression and anxiety among caregivers of psychiatric inpatients during the late stage of the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of network analysis.

METHODS

A total of 1101 caregivers of psychiatric inpatients were included in this study. The severity of depression was assessed using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), while anxiety was assessed with the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). The expected index (EI) and bridge EI index were used to identify the central and bridge symptoms, respectively. The stability of the network was evaluated via a case-dropping bootstrap procedure.

RESULTS

The prevalence of depression and anxiety were 32.4 % (95%CI: 29.7 %-35.3 %) and 28.0 % (95%CI: 25.4 %-30.7 %), respectively while the prevalence of comorbid depression and anxiety was 24.9 % (95%CI: 22.4 %-27.6 %). The most central symptom was "Fatigue", followed by "Trouble Relaxing" and "Restlessness". The highest bridge symptom was "Restlessness", followed by "Uncontrollable worry" and "Suicide ideation". The bootstrap test indicated that the whole network model was stable, and no network difference was detected between genders and between different education levels.

CONCLUSIONS

Depression, anxiety, and comorbid depression and anxiety were common among caregivers of psychiatric inpatients during the late stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Central and bridge symptoms identified in this network analysis should be considered key target symptoms to address in caregivers of patients.

Relative Local Electron Density Tuning in Metal-Covalent Organic Frameworks for Boosting CO2 Photoreduction

The high local electron density and efficient charge carrier separation are two important factors to affect photocatalytic activity, especially for the CO2 photoreduction reaction. However, the systematic studies on the structure-functional relationship regarding the above two factors based on precisely structure model are rarely reported. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, we developed a new strategy on the evaluation of local electron density by controlling the relative electron-deficient (ED) and electron-rich (ER) intensity of monomer at a molecular level based on three rational-designed vinylene-linked sp2 carbon-covalent organic frameworks (COFs). As expected, the as-prepared vinylene-linked sp2 carbon-conjugated metal-covalent organic framework (MCOFs) (VL-MCOF-1) with molecular junction exhibited excellent activities for CO2 -to-HCOOH conversion (283.41 μmol g-1  h-1 ) and high selectivity of 97.1 %, much higher than the VL-MCOF-2 and g-C34 N6 -COF, which is due to the synergistic effect of the multi-electronic metal clusters (Cu3 (PyCA)3 ) (PyCA=pyrazolate-4-carboxaldehyde) as strong ER roles and cyanopyridine units as ED roles and active sites, as well as the boosted photo-induced charge separation efficiency of vinyl connection and increased light utilization ability. These results not only provide a strategy for regulating the electron-density distribution of photocatalysts at the molecular level but also offers profound insights for metal clusters-based COFs to effective CO2 conversion.

[Research on the association between the occurrence of spermarche and menarche and psychological distress among Chinese children and adolescents aged 9-18 years]

Objective: To analyze the association between the occurrence of spermarche and menarche and psychological distress among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health, and a total of 54 438 boys aged 11 to 18 years and 76 376 girls aged 9 to 18 years with psychological distress, spermarche/menarche records were included in the final analysis. The occurrence of spermarche/menarche was recorded by physicians, and psychological distress was classified according to the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale scores. The chi-square test was used to compare the difference between groups in the occurrence of spermarche/menarche, and the multinomial logistic regression model and stratification analysis was established to analyze the association between psychological distress and spermarche/menarche. Results: The incidence of spermarche/menarche in 2019 ranged from 6.3% to 96.5% for eight age groups of Chinese boys and 2.8% to 99.0% for ten age groups of girls. The rates of high psychological distress among boys and girls were 32.5% and 32.7%. Among boys aged 11 to 18 years, the rate of high psychological distress increased with age, with a trend test P<0.001, and the difference in the rate of high psychological distress between those who had and had not had their spermarche was not statistically significant in all age groups. Among girls aged 9 to 18 years, the rate of high psychological distress increased with age, with a trend P<0.001; the rate of high psychological distress was higher in the group with menarche at age 10 and 12 than in the group without menarche (all P<0.05). High psychological distress was positively correlated with spermarche among boys aged 13-15 years living in urban areas and hight level economic development areas (OR=1.11, 95%CI: 1.02-1.21;OR=1.18, 95%CI: 1.06-1.32). Overall, high psychological distress was positively correlated with menarche in girls aged 9-12 and 13-15 years (OR=1.33, 95%CI: 1.25-1.42; OR=1.22, 95%CI: 1.07-1.39). High psychological distress was positively correlated with menarche among girls aged 9-12 years living in different regions except for the Northeast region, in areas with different levels of economic development, and in urban and rural areas, in girls aged 13-15 years living in urban, central, and western regions, and in girls aged 16-18 years residing in the central region. Conclusions: This study found an association between the occurrence of spermarche/menarche and psychological distress among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years in 2019, which was particularly significant among girls aged 9 to 12 years and boys aged 13 to 15 years living in areas with higher levels of socioeconomic development.

[Research on the association between the status of physical fitness and psychological distress among Chinese children and adolescents aged 13-18 years]

Objective: To describe the status of physical fitness of children and adolescents aged 13-18 years in China in 2019 and analyze its association with psychological distress. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health, and 90 633 Han children and adolescents aged 13-18 years were included. Physical fitness was evaluated by "National Students Constitutional Health Standards" (2014 revised edition). Psychological distress was classified according to the scores of the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale: ≤19, 20-24, 25-29, and ≥30 scores indicated no, mild, moderate, and severe psychological distress, respectively, with moderate and severe psychological distress collectively referred to as high psychological distress. The χ2 test was used to compare the distribution differences between boys and girls, the Cochran-Armitage test was used to analyze the trend, and the multinomial logistic regression in the mixed effect model was established to analyze the association between physical fitness and psychological distress. Results: In 2019, the unqualified rate of physical fitness among children and adolescents aged 13-18 years in China was 17.2%, and the prevalence of excellent and good physical fitness was 18.2%, which was lower among boys (15.9%) than girls (20.5%) with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The excellent and good physical fitness rate showed a significantly decreasing trend with age (trend test P<0.05). The rate of high psychological distress among children and adolescents aged 13-18 years in China in 2019 was 39.3%, with boys (37.0%) having a lower prevalence than girls (41.6%), supported by a statistically significant difference (P<0.05), and a decreasing trend with the degree of physical fitness was observed both in boys and girls (trend test P<0.05). The multinomial logistic regression model showed that the prevalence of moderate (OR=0.83, 95%CI: 0.79-0.88, P<0.001) and severe (OR=0.81, 95%CI: 0.77-0.86, P<0.001) psychological distress were both lower in children and adolescents with excellent and good physical fitness. Conclusion: The status of physical fitness and psychological distress of Chinese children and adolescents aged 13-18 in 2019 was not optimistic, with physical fitness showing a significantly negative association with psychological distress.

[Prevalence of psychological distress among Chinese children and adolescents aged 9-18 years]

Objective: To describe the prevalence of psychological distress and to analyze its influencing factors among Chinese children and adolescents aged 9-18 years in 2019. Methods: Data was from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health, and 148 892 children and adolescents were included. Psychological distress was measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10): scores ≤19 were defined as no psychological distress, scores between 20-24 were defined as mild psychological distress, scores between 25-29 were defined as moderate psychological distress, and scores ≥30 were defined as severe psychological distress (moderate to severe psychological distress were defined as high psychological distress). The ANOVA, t test, and χ2 test were used to compare the differences in K10 scores and high psychological distress rates among children and adolescents with different characteristics. The ANOVA and trend χ2 test were used to analyze the trends. Modified-Poisson regression models were used to determine influencing factors of high psychological distress. Results: The K10 scores for Chinese children and adolescents aged 9-18 years in 2019 was 21.5±9.2, and their rate of high psychological distress was 31.6%. The rates of high psychological distress among children and adolescents aged 9-12, 13-15, and 16-18 years were 22.3%, 35.9%, and 38.8%. K10 scores and rates of high psychological distress showed an increasing trend as age increased (trends test all P<0.001). K10 scores and rates of high psychological distress were higher among children and adolescents who were older, female, rural, in areas with medium to low GDP per capita level, and with lower parental education (all P<0.001). Multifactorial modified-Poisson regression analysis showed that children and adolescents aged 13-15 years, 16-18 years, female, rural, and in areas with low to moderate GDP per capita level were at higher risk of high psychological distress (all P<0.05), with aOR (95%CI) of 1.55 (1.52-1.58), 1.66 (1.63-1.69), 1.07 (1.05-1.09), 1.02 (1.01-1.04), 1.10 (1.07-1.12). Children and adolescents in areas with medium to high GDP per capita level, whose father had a secondary or high school degree, whose father had a college degree or above, whose mother had a secondary or high school degree, and whose mother had a college degree or above were at lower risk of high psychological distress (all P<0.05), with aOR (95%CI) of 0.96 (0.94-0.98), 0.92 (0.90-0.93), 0.84 (0.82-0.86), 0.95 (0.93-0.97), 0.86 (0.83-0.88). Conclusions: The prevalence of psychological distress was high among Chinese children and adolescents aged 9-18 years in 2019, which is a vital problem. Mental health interventions need to be implemented among children and adolescents that were older, girls, rural, live in areas with lower economic levels, and whose parents have a lower education level.

Global prevalence of poor sleep quality in military personnel and veterans: A systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies

Poor sleep quality is prevalent among members of the military but rates of poor sleep quality vary between studies. This study examined the global prevalence of poor sleep quality in military personnel and veterans as well as possible moderators of prevalence differences between studies. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were systematically searched from their inception dates to September 1, 2022. Studies were included if they were conducted on military personnel and/or veterans and prevalence estimates of poor sleep quality could be generated from assessments with standardized tools. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled prevalence and its 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Fifty-nine studies (N = 28,100) were included for analysis with sample sizes ranging from 14 to 8481. Two studies were rated as "high quality" (3.39%), while 57 were rated as "moderate quality" (96.61%). The overall pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality in military personnel and veterans was 69.00% (95% CI: 62.33-75.30%); pooled rates were 57.79% (95% CI: 49.88-65.50%) and 82.88% (95% CI: 74.08-90.21%) for active duty personnel and veterans, respectively. Subgroup analyses indicated study region, study design, sampling method, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index cut-off values, and service type moderated prevalence of poor sleep quality. Meta-regression analyses indicated sample size, mean age, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were associated with prevalence differences between studies. Poor sleep quality was more common in both active duty military personnel and veterans who were older and those who reported PTSD or depression. Regular monitoring of sleep quality and sleep hygiene should be promoted in this population. More relevant studies in middle- and low-income countries should also be conducted.

Hikikomori: A perspective from bibliometric analysis

AIMS

Hikikomori is a common phenomenon reported in Japan and many other countries. However, the broad trends of the research publications on hikikomori are unclear. Therefore, this study examined the patterns of research on hikikomori using bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Relevant publications were searched in Web of Science. Bibliometric analyses were performed with CiteSpace, R and VOSviewer.

RESULTS

In total, 297 publications on hikikomori met the eligibility criteria. The International Journal of Social Psychiatry (IF = 10.461) published the most papers (K = 17, or 5.7%) on hikikomori. Takahiro A. Kato from Kyushu University (41; 13.8%; H-index = 18) was the most influential author, while Takahiro A. Kato (total link strength [TLS]: 235), Alan R. Teo (TLS: 157), and Masaru Tateno (TLS: 153) separately had the strongest research collaboration with other researchers. Of all countries that published on hikikomori, Japan had the highest number of publications (K = 91). [Impact of asthma action plan-based remote joint management model on asthma control in children]

Objective: To compare the effects of the China Children's Asthma Action Plan (CCAAP)-based remote joint management model with traditional management model on the control of childhood asthma. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze the general data and asthma control assessment data of 219 children with asthma who attended the respiratory department of Guangzhou Women's and Children's Medical Center from April 2021 to October 2021 and were followed up for 1 year or more. According to the follow-up management model, the CCAAP-based remote joint management model was used in the observation group and the traditional management model was used in the control group, and the propensity score matching method was applied to match the data of children in the two management models for comparison. Paired-samples t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, McNemar χ2-test or χ2-test or nonparametric tests were used to compare the general data and asthma control assessment data between the two matched groups of children. Results: Among 219 children with asthma, 145 were male and 74 were female, aged at consultation (7.2±2.4) years. There were 147 cases in the observation group and 72 cases in the control group, and 27 cases in each of the observation and control groups were successfully matched. The number of asthma exacerbation aura, acute exacerbations, and emergency room visits or hospitalizations for asthma exacerbations were lower in the observation group than in the control group after pairing (1 (0, 2) vs. 3 (1, 5) times, 0 (0,0) vs. 0 (0, 1) times, 0 (0,0) vs. 1 (0, 1) times, Z=-3.42, -2.58, -3.17, all P<0.05). The use of peak flowmeters was higher in children aged 5 years and older in the observation group than in the control group after pairing (100% (22/22) vs. 13% (3/23), χ2=54.00,P<0.001). The ratio of actual to predicted 1st second expiratory volume of force after follow-up in the observation group after pairing was higher than that before follow-up in the observation group and after follow-up in the control group ((95±11)% vs. (85±10)%, (95±11)% vs. (88±11)%, t=-3.40, 2.25, all P<0.05). The rate of complete asthma control after follow-up was higher in both the observation and control groups after pairing than before follow-up for 12 months in both groups (93% (25/27) vs. 41% (11/27), 52% (14/27) vs. 41% (11/27), H=56.19, 45.37, both P<0.001), and the rate of complete control of asthma in children in the observation group was higher than that in the control group at 3 and 12 months of follow-up management (56% (15/27) vs. 25% (5/20), 93% (25/27) vs. 52% (14/27), χ2=47.00, 54.00, both P<0.001). The number of offline follow-up visits, inhaled hormone medication adherence scores, and caregiver's asthma perception questionnaire scores were higher in the observation group than in the control group after pairing (6 (4, 8) vs. 4 (2,5), (4.8±0.3) vs. (4.0±0.6) score, (19.3±2.6) vs. (15.2±2.7) score, Z=6.58, t=6.57, 5.61, all P<0.05), and the children in the observation group had lower school absences, caregiver absences, asthma attack visit costs, and caregiver PTSD scores than the control group (0 (0,0) vs.3 (0, 15) d, 0 (0,0) vs. 3 (0, 10) d, 1 100 (0, 3 700) vs. 5 000 (1 000, 10 000) yuan, 1.3 (1.1, 1.9) vs. 2.0 (1.2, 2.7) score, Z=-2.89, -2.30, 2.74, 2.73, all P<0.05). Conclusion: The CCAAP-based joint management model of asthma control is superior to the traditional management model in the following aspects: it can effectively improve asthma control, self-monitoring, and lung function in children; it can improve treatment adherence and caregivers' asthma awareness; and it can reduce the duration of absenteeism from school, the cost of asthma exacerbation visits, and caregiver's negative psychology.

[Non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 gene-related disorders with thrombocytopenia: report of two pedigrees and literature review]

Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics and gene variants of 2 pedigrees of non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 related diseases (MYH9-RD) in children. Methods: The basic information, clinical features, gene variants and laboratory tests of MYH9-RD patients from 2 pedigrees confirmed in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in November 2021 and July 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. "Non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 related disease" "MYH9" and "children" were used as key words to search at Pubmed database, CNKI and Wanfang database up to February 2023. The MYH9-RD gene variant spectrum and clinical data were analyzed and summarized. Results: Proband 1 (male, 11 years old) sought medical attention due to epistaxis, the eldest sister and second sister of proband 1 only showed excessive menstrual bleeding, the skin and mucous membrane of the their mother were prone to ecchymosis after bumping, the uncle of proband 1 had kidney damage, and the maternal grandmother and maternal great-grandmother of proband 1 had a history of cataracts. There were 7 cases of phenotypic abnormalities in this pedigree. High-throughput sequencing showed that the proband 1 MYH9 gene had c.279C>G (p.N93K) missense variant, and family verification analysis showed that the variant was inherited from the mother. A total of 4 patients including proband 1 and family members were diagnosed with MYH9-RD. The proband 2 (female, 1 year old) sought medical attention duo to fever and cough, and the father's physical examination revealed thrombocytopenia. There were 2 cases of phenotypic abnormalities in this pedigree. High-throughput sequencing showed that there was a c.4270G>A (p.D1424N) missense variant in the proband 2 MYH9 gene, and family verification analysis showed that the variant was inherited from the father. A total of 2 patients including proband 2 and his father were diagnosed with MYH9-RD. A total of 99 articles were retrieved, including 32 domestic literatures and 67 foreign literatures. The MYH9-RD cases totaled 149 pedigrees and 197 sporadic patients, including 2 pedigrees in our study. There were 101 cases with complete clinical data, including 62 sporadic cases and 39 pedigrees. There were 56 males and 45 females, with an average age of 6.9 years old. The main clinical manifestations were thrombocytopenia, skin ecchymosis, and epistaxis. Most patients didn't receive special treatment after diagnosis. Six English literatures related to MYH9-RD caused by c.279C>G mutation in MYH9 gene were retrieved. Italy reported the highest number of cases (3 cases). Twelve literatures related to MYH9-RD caused by c.4270G>A mutation in MYH9 gene were retrieved. China reported the highest number of cases (9 cases). Conclusions: The clinical manifestations of patients in the MYH9-RD pedigrees varied greatly. MYH9 gene c.279C>G and c.4270G>A mutations are the cause of MYH9-RD.

Identification of prognostic melatonin-related lncRNA signature in tumor immune microenvironment and drug resistance for breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Melatonin is a neurohormone involved in diverse physiological processes, including regulation of circadian rhythm, oncogenesis and immune function. More attention are focused on the molecular events surrounding the occurrence of abnormally expressed lncRNAs leading to breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of melatonin-related lncRNAs in the clinical management of BRCA patients and their immune responses.

METHODS

The transcriptome data and clinical data of BRCA patients were acquired from TCGA database. A total of 1103 patients were randomly assigned to either training set or validation set. A melatonin-related lncRNA signature was constructed in the training set and verified in the validation set. Functional analysis, immune microenvironment and drug resistance analysis associated to melatonin-related lncRNAs were performed by utilizing GO&KEGG, ESTIMATE and TIDE analysis. A nomogram based on the signature score and clinical characteristics was established, which was calibrated to increase prediction probability of 1-year, 3-year and 5-year survival for BRCA patients.

RESULTS

BRCA patients were divided into two signature groups based on a 17-melatonin-related lncRNA signature. High-signature patients had worse prognosis than low-signature patients (p < 0.001). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis proved that the signature score was an independent prognostic factor for BRCA patients. Functional analysis indicated that high-signature BRCA involved in regulation of processing and maturation of mRNA and misfolded protein response. Remarkably, immune microenvironment analysis showed that the proportion of tumor-infiltrating M2 macrophage and the expression of CTLA4 were significantly higher in high-signature BRCA. The calibration curves for the probability of invasive BRCA showed optimal agreement between the probability as predicted by the nomogram and the actual probability.

CONCLUSIONS

A novel melatonin-related lncRNA signature was considered as an independent prognostic indicator for BRCA patients. Melatonin-related lncRNAs were potentially associated with tumor immune microenvironment and might be therapeutic targets for BRCA patients.

Application effect of phloroglucinol injection in elderly patients with spastic abdominal pain in emergency department

BACKGROUND

Although norepinephrine injection is commonly used in emergency situations, it is associated with risks for elderly patients with spasmodic liver pain. This study explores the safety and effectiveness of mebendazole injection, an alternative treatment option, for the emergency management of spasmodic abdominal pain, while minimizing adverse reactions, in elderly patients.

AIM

To explore the development of norepinephrine injection and the adverse reactions of this drug in emergency elderly patients with spasmodic liver pain.

METHODS

The control group consisted of 56 elderly patients visiting our hospital from January 2021 to December 2021. After hospital admission, the control group was intravenously administered tolopin. The experimental group consisted of 56 emergency patients with spasmodic abdominal pain who visited our hospital until June 2022. After hospital admission, the experimental group was intravenously administered toloxazole. The two groups were treated for 3 d. The disappearance of clinical symptoms was observed before and after the treatment, and the difference in adverse reactions between the two groups was compared.

RESULTS

The pain of the wife, fire, diarrhea, drowning, and surrounding time disappeared in the experimental group. No statistical difference was observed between the experimental and control groups in visual pain analog scale (VAS) scores before and after the treatment (P > 0.05). The VAS scores of abdominal pain severity after 0.5 h, 1.0 h, and after 6.0 h of treatment were significantly lower for the experimental group than for the control group. After the treatment, the therapeutic effect in the experimental group was higher and statistically significant than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The probability of adverse reactions before the treatment was lower in the experimental group than in the control group.

CONCLUSION

During emergency, mebendazole injection exhibited a good therapeutic value when used for the clinical treatment of elderly patients with spasmodic stomach pain. It accelerated the disappearance of clinical symptoms such as stomach pain, reduced the stomach weight, and improved clinical activity. Reducing and promoting the frequency of high treatment safety with mebendazole injection is worthwhile.

Integrated single-cell and spatial transcriptomic profiling reveals higher intratumour heterogeneity and epithelial-fibroblast interactions in recurrent bladder cancer

BACKGROUND

Recurrent bladder cancer is the most common type of urinary tract malignancy; nevertheless, the mechanistic basis for its recurrence is uncertain. Innovative technologies such as single-cell transcriptomics and spatial transcriptomics (ST) offer new avenues for studying recurrent tumour progression at the single-cell level while preserving spatial data.

METHOD

This study integrated single-cell RNA (scRNA) sequencing and ST profiling to examine the tumour microenvironment (TME) of six bladder cancer tissues (three from primary tumours and three from recurrent tumours).

FINDINGS

scRNA data-based ST deconvolution analysis revealed a much higher tumour heterogeneity along with TME in recurrent tumours than in primary tumours. High-resolution ST analysis further identified that while the overall natural killer/T cell and malignant cell count or the ratio of total cells was similar or even lower in the recurrent tumours, a higher interaction between epithelial and immune cells was detected. Moreover, the analysis of spatial communication reveals a marked increase in activity between cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and malignant cells, as well as other immune cells in recurrent tumours.

INTERPRETATION

We observed an enhanced interplay between CAFs and malignant cells in bladder recurrent tumours. These findings were first observed at the spatial level.

[Analysis of clinicopathological and molecular abnormalities of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma]

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the clinicopathological features, molecular changes and prognostic factors in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL).

METHODS

Sixty-one cases AITL diagnosed by Department of Pathology of Peking University Cancer Hospital were collected with their clinical data. Morphologically, they were classified as typeⅠ[lymphoid tissue reactive hyperplasia (LRH) like]; typeⅡ[marginal zone lymphoma(MZL)like] and type Ⅲ [peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not specified (PTCL-NOS) like]. Immunohistochemical staining was used to evaluate the presence of follicular helper T-cell (TFH) phenotype, proliferation of extra germinal center (GC) follicular dendritic cells (FDCs), presence of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS)-like cells and large B transformation. The density of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) + cells was counted with slides stained by Epstein-Barr virus encoded RNA (EBER) in situ hybridization on high power field (HPF). T-cell receptor / immunoglobulin gene (TCR/IG) clonality and targeted exome sequencing (TES) test were performed when necessary. SPSS 22.0 software was used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

Morphological subtype (%): 11.4% (7/61) cases were classified as type Ⅰ; 50.8% (31/61) as type Ⅱ; 37.8% (23/61) as type Ⅲ. 83.6% (51/61) cases showed classical TFH immunophenotype. With variable extra-GC FDC meshwork proliferation (median 20.0%); 23.0% (14/61) had HRS-like cells; 11.5% (7/61) with large B transformation. 42.6% (26/61) of cases with high counts of EBV. 57.9% (11/19) TCR⁺/IG^-, 26.3% (5/19) TCR⁺/IG⁺, 10.5% (2/19) were TCR^－/IG^－, and 5.3% (1/19) TCR^－/IG⁺. Mutation frequencies by TES were 66.7% (20/30) for RHOA, 23.3% (7/30) for IDH2 mutation, 80.0% (24/30) for TET2 mutation, and 33.3% (10/30) DNMT3A mutation. Integrated analysis divided into four groups: (1) IDH2 and RHOA co-mutation group (7 cases): 6 cases were type Ⅱ, 1 case was type Ⅲ; all with typical TFH phenotype; HRS-like cells and large B transformation were not found; (2) RHOA single mutation group (13 cases): 1 case was type Ⅰ, 6 cases were type Ⅱ, 6 cases were type Ⅲ; 5 cases without typical TFH phenotype; 6 cases had HRS-like cells, and 2 cases with large B transformation. Atypically, 1 case showed TCR^－/IG^－, 1 case with TCR^－/IG⁺, and 1 case with TCR⁺/IG⁺; (3) TET2 and/or DNMT3A mutation alone group (7 cases): 3 cases were type Ⅱ, 4 cases were type Ⅲ, all cases were found with typical TFH phenotype; 2 cases had HRS-like cells, 2 cases with large B transformation, and atypically; (4) non-mutation group (3 cases), all were type Ⅱ, with typical TFH phenotype, with significant extra-GC FDC proliferation, without HRS-like cells and large B transformation. Atypically, 1 case was TCR^－/IG^－. Univariate analysis confirmed that higher density of EBV positive cell was independent adverse prognostic factors for both overall survival (OS) and progression free survival(PFS), (P=0.017 and P=0.046).

CONCLUSION

Pathological diagnoses of ALTL cases with HRS-like cells, large B transformation or type Ⅰ are difficult. Although TCR/IG gene rearrangement test is helpful but still with limitation. TES involving RHOA, IDH2, TET2, DNMT3A can robustly assist in the differential diagnosis of those difficult cases. Higher density of EBV positive cells counts in tumor tissue might be an indicator for poor survival.

[Association of outdoor artificial light at night exposure with overweight and obesity among children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years in China]

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the association between outdoor artificial light-at-night (ALAN) exposure and overweight and obesity among children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years in China.

METHODS

Using follow-up data of 5 540 children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years conducted from November 2019 to November 2020 in eight provinces of China, latitude and longitude were determined based on school addresses, and the mean monthly average nighttime irradiance at the location of 116 schools was extracted by the nearest neighbor method to obtain the mean outdoor ALAN exposure [unit: nW/(cm²·sr)] for each school. Four indicators of overweight and obesity outcomes were included: Baseline overweight and obesity, persistent overweight and obesity, overweight and obesity progression and overweight and obesity incidence. Mixed effects Logistic regression was used to explore the association between ALAN exposure levels (divided into quintiles Q1-Q5) and baseline overweight and obesity, persistent overweight and obesity, overweight and obesity progression and overweight and obesity incidence. In addition, a natural cubic spline function was used to explore the exposure response association between ALAN exposure (a continuous variable) and the outcomes.

RESULTS

The prevalence of baseline overweight and obesity, persistent overweight and obesity, overweight and obesity progression and overweight and obesity incidence among the children and adolescents in this study were 21.6%, 16.3%, 2.9% and 12.8%, respectively. The OR value for the association between ALAN exposure and baseline overweight and obesity was statistically significant when ALAN exposure levels reached Q4 or Q5, 1.90 (95%CI: 1.26-2.86) and 1.77 (95%CI: 1.11-2.83), respectively, compared with the children and adolescents in the Q1 group of ALAN exposure. Similar to the results for baseline overweight and obesity, the OR values for the association with persistent overweight and obesity were 1.89 (95%CI: 1.20-2.99) and 1.82 (95%CI: 1.08-3.06) when ALAN exposure levels reached Q4 or Q5, respectively, but none of the OR values for the association between ALAN and overweight and obesity progression and overweight and obesity incidence were statistically significant. Fitting a natural cubic spline function showed a non-linear trend between ALAN exposure and persistent overweight and obesity.

CONCLUSION

There is a positive association between ALAN exposure and overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, and the promotion of overweight obesity in children and adolescents by ALAN tends to have a cumulative effect rather than an immediate effect. In the future, while focusing on the common risk factors for overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, there is a need to improve the overweight and obesity-causing nighttime light exposure environment.

Quantum metric nonlinear Hall effect in a topological antiferromagnetic heterostructure

Quantum geometry in condensed matter physics has two components: the real part quantum metric and the imaginary part Berry curvature. Whereas the effects of Berry curvature have been observed through phenomena such as the quantum Hall effect in 2D electron gases and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets, quantum metric has rarely been explored. Here, we report a nonlinear Hall effect induced by quantum metric dipole by interfacing even-layered MnBi₂Te₄ with black phosphorus. The quantum metric nonlinear Hall effect switches direction upon reversing the AFM spins and exhibits distinct scaling that is independent of the scattering time. Our results open the door to discovering quantum metric responses predicted theoretically and pave the way for applications that bridge nonlinear electronics with AFM spintronics.

[Relationship between plasma levels of thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 and tissue-type plasminogen activator and deep venous thrombosis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus]

Objective: To investigate the plasma levels of thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and their relationship with deep venous thrombosis of the lower limbs. Methods: A case-control study was conducted to retrospectively select 32 SLE patients with deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities (thrombus group) admitted to Liaocheng People's Hospital in Shandong Province from June 2018 to June 2021, including 4 males and 28 females, with a mean age of (49.7±5.5) years. Meanwhile, 64 SLE patients without deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities (control group) were also selected, including 11 males and 53 females, with a mean age of (50.8±5.5) years. The plasma levels of TAFI, PAI-1 and t-PA of the two groups were compared. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the correlation of TAFI, PAI-1 and t-PA with SLE in patients. Results: The plasma levels of TAFI, PAI-1 and t-PA were (32.77±5.17) mg/L, (29.43±5.51) μg/L and (6.58±1.40) μg/L in the thrombotic group, while the plasma levels of TAFI, PAI-1 and t-PA in the control group were (23.56±4.40) mg/L, (19.00±4.40) μg/L and (9.40±2.23) μg/L. The levels of TAFI and PAI-1 in the thrombotic group were higher than those in the control group, while the level of t-PA was lower than that in the control group (all P<0.05). The results of logistic regression model showed that higher TAFI levels (OR=1.75, 95%CI: 1.05-2.90, P=0.043), higher PAI-1 levels (OR=1.85, 95%CI: 1.04-3.29, P=0.046), and lower t-PA levels (OR=0.72, 95%CI: 0.52-0.99, P=0.048) were related factors for the occurrence of deep venous thrombosis of the lower limbs in SLE patients. Conclusion: The plasma levels of TAFI and PAI-1 in SLE patients with deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities increase, while the t-PA level decreases, which are related factors for the occurrence of deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities in SLE patients.

Dual Photosensitizer Coupled Three-Dimensional Metal-Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient Photocatalytic Reactions

In this work, we innovatively assembled two types of traditional photosensitizers, that is pyridine ruthenium/ferrum (Ru(bpy)32+/Fe(bpy)32+) and porphyrin/metalloporphyrin complex (2HPor/ZnPor) by covalent linkage to get a series of dual photosensitizer-based three-dimensional metal-covalent organic frameworks (3D MCOFs), which behaved strong visible light-absorbing ability, efficient electron transfer and suitable band gap for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution. Rubpy-ZnPor COF achieved the highest H2 yield (30338 μmol g-1 h-1) with apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9.68%@420 nm, which showed one of the best performances among all reported COF based photocatalysts. Furthermore, the in-situ produced H2 was successfully tandem used in the alkyne hydrogenation with ~99.9% efficiency. Theoretical calculations reveal that both the two photosensitizer units in MCOFs can be photoexcited and thus contribute optimal photocatalytic activity. This work develops a general strategy and shows the great potential of using multiple photosensitive materials in the field of photocatalysis.

[Prognostic analysis of children with Philadelphia chromosome-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia common genes]

Objective: To summarize the clinical data and prognosis of children with Philadelphia chromosome-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph-like ALL) common genes. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study.Clinical data of 56 children with Ph-like ALL common gene cases (Ph-like ALL positive group) treated from January 2017 to January 2022 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Henan Children's Hospital, Henan Cancer's Hospital and Henan Provincial People's Hospital were collected, 69 children with other high-risk B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) at the same time and the same age were selected as the negative group. The clinical characteristics and prognosis of two groups were analyzed retrospectively. Comparisons between groups were performed using Mann-Whitney U test and χ² test. Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival curve, Log-Rank test was used for univariate analysis, and the Cox regression model was used for multivariate prognosis analysis. Results: Among 56 Ph-like ALL positive patients, there were 30 males and 26 females, and 15 cases were over 10 years old. There were 69 patients in Ph-like ALL negative group. Compared with the negative group, the children in positive group were older (6.4 (4.2, 11.2) vs. 4.7 (2.8, 8.4) years), and hyperleukocytosis (≥50×10⁹/L) was more common (25% (14/56) vs. 9% (6/69)), the differences were statistically significant (both P<0.05). In the Ph-like ALL positive group, 32 cases were positive for IK6 (1 case was co-expressed with IK6 and EBF1-PDGFRB), 24 cases were IK6-negative, of which 9 cases were CRLF2 positive (including 2 cases with P2RY8-CRLF2, 7 cases with CRLF2 high expression), 5 cases were PDGFRB rearrangement, 4 cases were ABL1 rearrangement, 4 cases were JAK2 rearrangement, 1 case was ABL2 rearrangement and 1 case was EPOR rearrangement. The follow-up time of Ph-like ALL positive group was 22 (12, 40) months, and 32 (20, 45) months for negative group. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate of positive group was significantly lower than the negative group ((72±7) % vs. (86±5) %, χ²=4.59, P<0.05). Compared with the 24 IK6-negative patients, the 3-year event free survival (EFS) rate of 32 IK6 positive patients was higher, the difference was statistically significant ((88±9) % vs. (65±14) %, χ²=5.37, P<0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the bone marrow minimal residual disease (MRD) not turning negative at the end of first induction (HR=4.12, 95%CI 1.13-15.03) independent prognostic risk factor for patient with Ph-like ALL common genes. Conclusions: Children with Ph-like ALL common genes were older than other high-risk B-ALL patients at diagnosis, with high white blood cells and lower survival rate. The bone marrow MRD not turning negative at the end of first induction were independent prognostic risk factor for children with Ph-like ALL common gene.

Axion optical induction of antiferromagnetic order

Using circularly polarized light to control quantum matter is a highly intriguing topic in physics, chemistry and biology. Previous studies have demonstrated helicity-dependent optical control of chirality and magnetization, with important implications in asymmetric synthesis in chemistry; homochirality in biomolecules; and ferromagnetic spintronics. We report the surprising observation of helicity-dependent optical control of fully compensated antiferromagnetic order in two-dimensional even-layered MnBi₂Te₄, a topological axion insulator with neither chirality nor magnetization. To understand this control, we study an antiferromagnetic circular dichroism, which appears only in reflection but is absent in transmission. We show that the optical control and circular dichroism both arise from the optical axion electrodynamics. Our axion induction provides the possibility to optically control a family of [Formula: see text]-symmetric antiferromagnets ([Formula: see text], inversion; [Formula: see text], time-reversal) such as Cr₂O₃, even-layered CrI₃ and possibly the pseudo-gap state in cuprates. In MnBi₂Te₄, this further opens the door for optical writing of a dissipationless circuit formed by topological edge states.

[Trend of age of menarche among Chinese Han girls aged 9 to 18 years from 2010 to 2019]

Objective: To analyze the trends of the age of menarche among Chinese Han girls aged 9 to 18 years from 2010 to 2019. Methods: Data were extracted from the Chinese National Surveys on Students' Constitution and Health in 2010, 2014 and 2019. A total of 253 037 Han girls aged 9 to 18 years with complete data on menarche were selected in this study. They were asked one-on-one about their menstrual status, age and residence information. The median age of menarche was estimated by probability regression. U tests were used to compare the difference in median age at menarche in different years. Results: The median age at menarche (95%CI) among Chinese Han girls was 12.47 (12.09-12.83) years in 2010, 12.17 (11.95-12.38) years in 2014 and 12.05 (10.82-13.08) years in 2019, respectively. Compared with that in 2010, the median age at menarche in 2019 decreased by 0.42 years (U=-77.27, P<0.001). The annual average changes were -0.076 years from 2010 to 2014 (U=-57.19, P<0.001) and -0.023 years from 2014 to 2019 (U=-21.41, P<0.001), respectively. The average annual changes in urban areas in the periods of 2010 to 2014 and 2014 to 2019 were -0.071 years and 0.006 years, respectively, while those in rural areas were -0.082 years and -0.053 years, respectively. The average annual changes in the regions of north, northeast, east, south central, southwest and northwest were -0.064, -0.099, -0.091, -0.080, -0.096 and -0.041 years in the period of 2010 to 2014 and 0.001, -0.040, -0.002, -0.005, -0.043 and -0.081 years in the period of 2014 to 2019. Conclusion: The age of menarche among Chinese Han girls aged 9 to 18 years shows an advanced trend from 2010 to 2019, and the trends in urban and rural areas and different regions have different characteristics.

[Safety and efficacy of the early administration of levosimendan in patients with acute non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and elevated NT-proBNP levels: An Early Management Strategy of Acute Heart Failure (EMS-AHF)]

Objectives: To investigated the safety and efficacy of treating patients with acute non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and elevated levels of N-terminal pro-hormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) with levosimendan within 24 hours of first medical contact (FMC). Methods: This multicenter, open-label, block-randomized controlled trial (NCT03189901) investigated the safety and efficacy of levosimendan as an early management strategy of acute heart failure (EMS-AHF) for patients with NSTEMI and high NT-proBNP levels. This study included 255 patients with NSTEMI and elevated NT-proBNP levels, including 142 males and 113 females with a median age of 65 (58-70) years, and were admitted in the emergency or outpatient departments at 14 medical centers in China between October 2017 and October 2021. The patients were randomly divided into a levosimendan group (n=129) and a control group (n=126). The primary outcome measure was NT-proBNP levels on day 3 of treatment and changes in the NT-proBNP levels from baseline on day 5 after randomization. The secondary outcome measures included the proportion of patients with more than 30% reduction in NT-proBNP levels from baseline, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) during hospitalization and at 6 months after hospitalization, safety during the treatment, and health economics indices. The measurement data parameters between groups were compared using the t-test or the non-parametric test. The count data parameters were compared between groups using the χ² test. Results: On day 3, the NT-proBNP levels in the levosimendan group were lower than the control group but were statistically insignificant [866 (455, 1 960) vs. 1 118 (459, 2 417) ng/L, Z=-1.25,P=0.21]. However, on day 5, changes in the NT-proBNP levels from baseline in the levosimendan group were significantly higher than the control group [67.6% (33.8%,82.5%)vs.54.8% (7.3%,77.9%), Z=-2.14, P=0.03]. There were no significant differences in the proportion of patients with more than 30% reduction in the NT-proBNP levels on day 5 between the levosimendan and the control groups [77.5% (100/129) vs. 69.0% (87/126), χ²=2.34, P=0.13]. Furthermore, incidences of MACE did not show any significant differences between the two groups during hospitalization [4.7% (6/129) vs. 7.1% (9/126), χ²=0.72, P=0.40] and at 6 months [14.7% (19/129) vs. 12.7% (16/126), χ²=0.22, P=0.64]. Four cardiac deaths were reported in the control group during hospitalization [0 (0/129) vs. 3.2% (4/126), P=0.06]. However, 6-month survival rates were comparable between the two groups (log-rank test, P=0.18). Moreover, adverse events or serious adverse events such as shock, ventricular fibrillation, and ventricular tachycardia were not reported in both the groups during levosimendan treatment (days 0-1). The total cost of hospitalization [34 591.00(15 527.46,59 324.80) vs. 37 144.65(16 066.90,63 919.00)yuan, Z=-0.26, P=0.80] and the total length of hospitalization [9 (8, 12) vs. 10 (7, 13) days, Z=0.72, P=0.72] were lower for patients in the levosimendan group compared to those in the control group, but did not show statistically significant differences. Conclusions: Early administration of levosimendan reduced NT-proBNP levels in NSTEMI patients with elevated NT-proBNP and did not increase the total cost and length of hospitalization, but did not significantly improve MACE during hospitalization or at 6 months.

The role of TLR4-mediated MyD88/TRAF6/NF-κB signaling and pIgR intestinal expression in chicks during Salmonella enteritidis infection

To observe the effect of Salmonella enteritidis (SE)-induced inflammation on pIgR expression in jejunum and ileum. Salmonella enteritidis was orally administered to 7-day old Hyline chicks, which were killed after 1d,3d,7d and 14d. The mRNA expression of TLR4,MyD88,TRAF6,NF-κB, and pIgR was detected by real-time RT-PCR, and pIgR protein was detected by Western blotting. The TLR4 signaling pathway was activated, the mRNA expression of the pIgR in jejunum and ileum was increased, and pIgR protein in jejunum and ileum was up-regulated by SE. In SE-treated chicks,the pIgR in jejunum and ileum was up-regulated on mRNA,and protein level,associated with activation of the TRL4-mediated MyD88/TRAF6/NF-κB signaling pathway, which identifies this as a novel pIgR-related pathway to TLR4 activation.

[Self-reported quality of life in patients with coronary heart disease and analysis of the associated factors]

Objective: To investigate the quality of life and associated factors in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) in China. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 25 provinces and cities in China was performed from June to September 2020. A questionnaire was used to collect the socio-demographic and clinical information of patients with CHD, while the European Five-dimensional Quality of Life Scale (EQ-5D) was used to assess the quality of life. Multiple linear regression model was performed to analyze the associated factors. Results: The median age of the 1 075 responders was 60 (52, 67) years, and 797 (74.1%) were men. The EQ-5D and EQ-VAS indices were 0.7 (0.5, 0.8) and 60.0 (40.0, 80.0). Among the five dimensions in the quality of life scale, the frequency of anxiety/depression was the highest (59.8%), while problems in self-care was the lowest (35.8%). In the multiple linear regression model, female, increasing age, obesity, comorbidity(ies), anxiety/depression, social media channels, and receiving the CABG therapy were associated with the lower EQ-5D index (all P<0.05). In addition, increasing age, obesity, comorbidity (ies), depression, anxiety and depression, social media channels, and receiving the CABG therapy were associated with lower EQ-VAS index (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Over half of the patients with CHD in China have a low quality of life, which is related to gender, age, obesity, treatment pathway, the presence or absence of comorbidity (ies), and psychological state. In addition to managing the adverse effects of traditional socio-demographic factors on the quality of life, clinical practices should pay attention to the psychological state of patients. Moreover, establishing a WeChat group for doctor-patient communication could improve the quality of life of CHD patients.

[Perceived exercise benefits and barriers and their association with physical activity time in Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years]

Objective: To analyze the perceived exercise benefits and barriers and their association with physical activity time in Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 9-18 years. Methods: Data were extracted from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health and a total of 163 656 children and adolescents aged 9-18 years in Han ethnic group were included in the analysis. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare the perceived exercise benefits score, perceived exercise barriers score and perceived exercise benefits to barriers ratio in the children and adolescents with different demographic characteristics and physical activity time. The differences in physical activity time in subgroups were compared with χ² tests. log-binomial regression model was used to evaluate the association between physical activity time and perceived exercise benefits and barriers. Results: The M (Q₁,Q₃) of the perceived exercise benefits score, perceived exercise barriers score, and perceived exercise benefits to barriers ratio in the children and adolescents were 4.11 (3.78, 4.78), 2.70 (2.10, 3.20) and 1.55 (1.22, 2.07), respectively. Children and adolescents living in urban area, boys, those at younger age and those with physical activity time ≥1 hour had higher perceived exercise benefits score and perceived exercise benefits to barriers ratio, but lower perceived exercise barriers score (all P<0.001). The prevalence of physical activity time ≥1 hour was 41.4% in the children and adolescents. In the log-binomial model with two variables of perceived exercise benefits score and perceived exercise barriers score, for each 1-point increase in the perceived exercise benefits, the possibility of physical activity time ≥1 hour increased by 11% (OR=1.11, 95%CI: 1.10-1.12), and for each 1-point increase in the perceived exercise barriers, the possibility of physical activity time ≥1 hour decreased by 15% (OR=0.85, 95%CI: 0.84-0.85). In the log-binomial model with variable of perceived exercise benefits to barriers ratio, for each 1-point increase in the perceived exercise benefits to barriers ratio, the possibility of physical activity time ≥1 hour increased by 12% (OR=1.12, 95%CI: 1.11-1.12). Conclusion: The perceived exercise benefits and barriers are significantly associated with physical activity time in children and adolescents in China.

Seven diterpenoids from the resin of Pinus yunnanensis Franch and their anti-inflammatory activity

Phytochemical investigation of the 95% ethanol extract from Pinus yunnanensis Franch resin induced the isolation of six previously unreported diterpenoids pinuyunnanacids K - N, P - Q, a nor-diterpenoid with a novel skeleton pinuyunnanacid O and six known analogues. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and computational methods, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, calculated NMR chemical shifts method and electronic circular dichroic (ECD) spectra. All the compounds were analyzed for anti-inflammatory activity through western blotting and cell viability, compounds 2, 10 and 12 significantly downregulated the protein expression of iNOS at the concentration of 40 μM. At the same time, compounds 10 and 12 decreased the expression of COX-2 in LPS-treated RAW264.7 (leukemia cells in mouse macrophage) cells at the concentration of 40 μM.

Two new β-carboline alkaloids from the roots of Anemone altaica

Two new β-carboline alkaloids, anemonilins A and B (1-2), and two known β-carboline alkaloids, flazine (3) and 4-(9H-β-carbolin-l-yl)-4-oxo-butyric acid (4), were isolated from the roots of Anemone altaica. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated with spectroscopic and spectrometric methods (1D and 2DNMR, HRESIMS). Compounds 2 and 4 significantly attenuated the growth inhibition induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in normal rat kidney tubule epithelioid (NRK52e) cells (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Furthermore, compound 2 significantly reduced the apoptosis (p < 0.05) and the caspase-3/9 expression of NRK52e cells induced by LPS.

[Trend of the detection rate of myopia among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 7-18 years from 2010 to 2019]

Objective: To analyze the trend of the detection rate of myopia among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 7-18 years from 2010 to 2019. Methods: Data from the Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health in 2010, 2014 and 2019 were used, and about 213 833, 212 742 and 209 942 Han students aged 7-18 years were included in this study. The χ² test was used to compare the differences in the prevalence of myopia among the subgroups in the survey year, and logistic regression was used to compare the differences in the prevalence of myopia between different years. A curve-fitting method was used to obtain the growth rate of myopia among Han Chinese students from 2010 to 2019, and the differences in the change of myopia between different age groups were analyzed. Results: In 2019, the overall detection rate of myopia among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 7-18 was 60.1%. The detection rate of urban students (62.7%) was higher than that of rural students (57.4%) and the detection rate of girls (63.5%) was higher than that of boys (56.7%). In 2019, the regional disparities were large in the detection rate of myopia in various provinces, with the lowest in Guizhou (49.6%) and the highest in Zhejiang (71.3%). The detection rate of myopia showed an upward trend from 2010 to 2019, from 55.5% in 2010 to 57.1% in 2014, and finally to 60.1% in 2019. The gap in the detection rate of myopia between urban and rural children and adolescents gradually shrank. The average annual growth rate of myopia detection rate from 2014 to 2019 was 0.6 percentage points per year, higher than that from 2010 to 2014 about 0.4 percentage points per year. The peak age of the growth rate of myopia detection rate decreased from 12 years in 2010 to 10 years in 2014, and finally to 7 years in 2019. Conclusions: The detection rate of myopia among Chinese Han children and adolescents is still at a high level, and the peak age of the growth rate of myopia detection rate continues to advance.

[Long-term trend of the age of spermarche and its association with nutritional status among Chinese Han boys aged 11-18 from 2010 to 2019]

Objective: To analyze the long-term trend of the age of spermarche among Chinese Han boys aged 11 to 18 from 2010 to 2019 and its association with nutritional status. Methods: The data from Chinese National Surveys on Students' Constitution and Health in 2010, 2014 and 2019 were used. The age, residence and spermarche of the participants were collected by questionnaire, and their height and weight were measured. A total of 184 633 Han boys aged 11‒18 years with complete data on spermarche, height, and weight were included in this study. The probability regression method was used to calculate the median age (95%CI) at spermarche in different areas, and the trend of age at spermarche in different groups was compared. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between nutritional status and spermarche of Chinese Han boys aged 11‒18 years. Results: The median age of spermarche (95%CI) was 13.85 (13.45-14.22) years old among Chinese Han boys aged 11‒18 years in 2019, with 0.18 years earlier than that in 2010. The median age at spermarche in urban and rural boys was 13.89 and 13.81 years, respectively. Compared with that in 2010, the age at spermarche in urban and rural boys was 0.08 and 0.27 years earlier, respectively. After adjusting for age, province and urban/rural areas, compared with normal weight, spermarche was negatively associated with wasting and positively associated with overweight and obesity, with OR (95%CI) about 0.73 (0.67-0.80), 1.09 (1.02-1.17) and 1.09 (1.01-1.18), respectively. Conclusion: The age of spermarche generally shows an advanced trend among Chinese Han boys and is associated with nutritional status.

Deeply functional identification of TCS1 alleles provides efficient technical paths for low-caffeine breeding of tea plants

Caffeine is an important functional component in tea, which has the effect of excitement and nerve stimulation, but excessive intake can cause insomnia and dysphoria. Therefore, the production of tea with low-caffeine content can meet the consumption needs of certain people. Here, in addition to the previous alleles of the tea caffeine synthase (TCS1) gene, a new allele (TCS1h) from tea germplasms was identified. Results of in vitro activity analysis showed that TCS1h had both theobromine synthase (TS) and caffeine synthase (CS) activities. Site-directed mutagenesis experiments of TCS1a, TCS1c, and TCS1h demonstrated that apart from the 225th amino acid residue, the 269th amino acid also determined the CS activity. GUS histochemical analysis and dual-luciferase assay indicated the low promoter activity of TCS1e and TCS1f. In parallel, insertion and deletion mutations in large fragments of alleles and experiments of site-directed mutagenesis identified a key cis-acting element (G-box). Furthermore, it was found that the contents of purine alkaloids were related to the expression of corresponding functional genes and alleles, and the absence or presence and level of gene expression determined the content of purine alkaloids in tea plants to a certain extent. In summary, we concluded TCS1 alleles into three types with different functions and proposed a strategy to effectively enhance low-caffeine tea germplasms in breeding practices. This research provided an applicable technical avenue for accelerating the cultivation of specific low-caffeine tea plants.

PIC-integrable high-responsivity germanium waveguide photodetector in the C + L band

We report the demonstration of a germanium waveguide p-i-n photodetector (PD) for the C + L band light detection. Tensile strain is transferred into the germanium layer using a SiN stressor on top surface of the germanium. The simulation and experimental results show that the trenches must be formed around the device, so that the strain can be transferred effectively. The device exhibits an almost flat responsivity with respect to the wavelength range from 1510 nm to 1630 nm, and high responsivity of over 1.1 A/W is achieved at 1625 nm. The frequency response measurement reveals that a high 3 dB bandwidth (f3dB) of over 50 GHz can be obtained. The realization of the photonic-integrated circuits (PIC)-integrable waveguide Ge PDs paves the way for future telecom applications in the C + L band.

[Effects of extramedullary disease on patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma]

Objective: To summarize the characteristics of patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) admitted at Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. We compared the clinical characteristics and prognoses among patients with non-extramedullary disease (EMD), bone-related extramedullary (EM-B) disease, and extraosseous extramedullary (EM-E) disease and further explored the effects of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for EMD. Methods: From January 2015 to January 2022, data of 114 patients (22%) with EMD out of 515 patients with NDMM were retrospectively analyzed; 91 (18%) and 23 (4%) patients comprised the EM-B and EM-E groups, respectively. The clinical characteristics of patients in all groups were compared with the Chi-square test. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Independent prognostic factors were determined using multivariate Cox proportional hazard model. Results: There were no significant differences in age, gender, ISS stage, light chain, creatinine clearance, cytogenetic risk, 17p deletion, ASCT, and induction regimens among the three groups. Overall, 13% of EM-E patients had IgD-type M protein, which was significantly higher than that in EM-B patients (P=0.021). The median PFS of patients in the non-EMD, EM-B, and EM-E groups was 27.4, 23.1, and 14.0 months; the median OS was not reached, 76.8 months, and 25.6 months, respectively. The PFS (vs non-EMD, P=0.004; vs EM-B, P=0.036) and OS (vs non-EMD, P<0.001; vs EM-B, P=0.002) were significantly worse in patients with EM-E, while those were not significantly different between patients with EM-B and those with non-EMD. In the multivariate analysis, EM-E was an independent prognostic factor for OS in patients with NDMM (HR=8.779, P<0.001) and negatively impacted PFS (HR=1.874, P=0.050). In those who did not undergo ASCT, patients with EM-B had significantly worse OS than those with non-EMD (median 76.8 months vs. not reached, P=0.029). However, no significant difference was observed in the PFS and OS of patients with EM-B and those with non-EMD who underwent ASCT. Conclusions: Compared to patients with either non-EMD or EM-B, those with EM-E had the worst prognosis. EM-E was an independent risk factor for OS in patients with NDMM. ASCT can overcome the poor prognosis of EM-B.

Five new compounds from Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens and their anti-apoptotic activity

Five new compounds, named gingerol A (1a and 1b), gingerol B (2), diphenylheptane glycoside A (3) and diphenylheptane glycoside B (4), were isolated from the acetone extract of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens. The structures of new compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods including UV, IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS. Compounds 2-4 could significantly decrease the apoptosis rate and increase the survival rate of human normal lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) at the concentration of 10 μM.

Heart failure and depression: A perspective from bibliometric analysis

Background

Depression commonly occurs in heart failure patients, and negatively influences quality of life and disease prognosis. This study explored heart failure and depression-related research from a bibliometric perspective.

Methods

Relevant publications were searched on June 24, 2022. The Bibliometrix package in R was used to conduct quantitative analyses including the trends in publications, and related countries, articles, authors and keywords. VOSviewer software was used to conduct the visualization map on co-word, co-author, and institution co-authorship analyses. CiteSpace software was used to illustrate the top keywords with citation burst.

Results

A total of 8,221 publications in the heart failure and depression-related research field were published between 1983 and 2022. In this field, the United States had the most publications (N = 3,013; 36.65%) and highest total citation (N = 149, 376), followed by China, Germany, Italy and Japan. Author Moser and Duke University were the most productive author and institution, respectively. Circulation is the most influential journal. Apart from "heart failure" and "depression," "quality of life," "mortality" and "myocardial infarction" were the most frequently used keywords in this research area; whereas more recently, "self care" and "anxiety" have been used more frequently.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis showed a rapid growth of research related to heart failure and depression from 1989 to 2021, which was mostly led by North America and Europe. Future directions in this research area include issues concerning self-care and anxiety about heart failure. As most of the existing literature were published in English, publications in other languages should be examined in the future.

Schizophrenia and oxidative stress from the perspective of bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

A growing number of studies has implicated oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to explore the field of schizophrenia and oxidative stress-related research from a bibliometric perspective.

METHODS

All relevant publications on schizophrenia and oxidative stress were obtained from Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database from its inception date to November 8, 2022. VOSviewer software was used to examine co-authorships and co-occurring keywords. R software was used to present the main characteristics of publications and cooperation frequency among countries. CiteSpace was used to investigate keywords with the strongest citation bursts.

RESULTS

A total of 3,510 publications on schizophrenia and oxidative stress were included. The United States had the largest number of publications (26.1%), and international collaborations. University of Melbourne was the most productive institution, while Schizophrenia Research was the most productive journal in this field. Apart from "schizophrenia" and "oxidative stress", the terms "prefrontal cortex", "brain" and "nitric oxide" were among the most frequently used keywords.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, research on the association between oxidative stress and schizophrenia has received growing attention in the academic literature that is expected to continue its upward trajectory during the next two decades. Existing research suggests there has been a transition from research focused on pathways to animal models, and subsequently to clinical applications. Intervention studies on oxidative stress and schizophrenia are likely to be an important focus of related work in the near future.

[The regulatory function of tumor-infiltrating Th9 cells to anti-tumor activity of CD8(+) T cells in patients with gastric cancer]

Objective: To investigate the levels of Th9 cells and interleukin-9 (IL-9), and to assess the regulatory activity of Th9/IL-9 to anti-tumor immune response in patients with gastric cancer. Methods: Thirty-four patients with gastric cancer who received operation in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University between October 2018 and August 2019 were included. Twenty individuals who received physical examination in the same period were also enrolled. Peripheral blood was collected, and then plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and autologous gastric cancer cells were isolated from resected gastric cancer tissues. CD4(+) T cells, CD8(+) T cells, and CD4(+) CCR4(-)CCR6(-)CXCR3(-) cells were purified from PBMCs and TILs. Plasma IL-9 level was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The percentage of CD3(+) CD4(+) IL-9(+) Th9 cells in PBMCs and TILSs was assessed by flow cytometry. The mRNA levels of IL-9 and transcriptional factors purine-rich nucleic acid binding protein 1 (PU.1) were semi-quantified by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). PBMCs and TILs from gastric cancer patients were stimulated with recombinant human IL-9. Cellular proliferation was measured by cell counting kit-8. The phosphorylation levels of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and STAT6 were investigated by western blot. Cytokine production was measured by ELISA. Purified CD8(+) T cells from TILs of gastric cancer patients were stimulated with recombinant human IL-9. CD8(+) T cells and autologous gastric cancer cells were cocultured in direct contact and indirect contact manner. The percentage of target cell death was calculated by measuring the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level. These cretion of γ-Interferon (γ-IFN) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was measured by ELISA. CD4(+) CCR4(-)CCR6(-)CXCR3(-)cells, CD8(+) T cells, and autologous gastric cancer cells were directly cocultured, and anti-IL-9 neutralizing antibody was added. The target cell death was measured. Results: The percentages of CD3(+) CD4(+) IL-9(+) Th9 cells in PBMCs of control group and PBMCs of gastric cancer group were (1.21±0.25)% and (1.14±0.19)%, respectively. The difference was not statistically significant (P=0.280). The percentage of CD3(+) CD4(+) IL-9(+) Th9 cells in TILs of gastric cancer group was (2.30±0.55)%, which was higher than those in PBMCs of control group and PBMCs of gastric cancer group (P<0.001). The plasma IL-9 level in control group and gastric cancer group were (5.04±1.51) and (4.93±1.25) ng/ml. The difference was not statistically significant (P=0.787). The relative levels of IL-9 mRNA in PBMCs of control group and PBMCs of gastric cancer group were 1.33±0.39 and 1.36±0.27. The difference was not statistically significant (P=0.691). The relative level of IL-9 mRNA in TILs of gastric cancer group was 2.90±0.75, which was higher than those in PBMCs of control group (P<0.001) and PBMCs of gastric cancer group (P<0.001). The relative levels of PU.1 mRNA in PBMCs of control group and PBMCs of gastric cancer group were 1.21±0.12 and 1.20±0.11. The difference was not statistically significant (t=0.21, P=0.833). PU.1 mRNA relative level in TILs of gastric cancer group was 2.81±0.65, which was higher than those in PBMCs of control group (P<0.001) and PBMCs of gastric cancer group (P<0.001). Recombinant human IL-9 stimulation did not affect the proliferation of PBMCs and TILs of gastric cancer patients (P>0.05), but elevated the phosphorylation level of STAT6 and induced the secretions of γ-IFN, IL-17, and IL-22 by TILs (P<0.05). In direct contact culture system, IL-9 stimulation promoted tumor-infiltrating CD8(+) T cells-induced autologous gastric cancer cell death [(20.62±2.27)% vs. (16.08±2.61)%, P<0.01)]. In indirect contact culture system, IL-9 stimulation did not increase CD8(+) T cell-induced autologous gastric cancer cell death [(5.21±0.70)% vs. (5.31±1.22)%, P=0.998)]. However, the secretion levels of γ-IFN were elevated in response to IL-9 stimulation in both culture systems [direct contact culture system: (100.40±12.05) pg/ml vs. (76.45±8.56) pg/ml; indirect contact culture system: (78.00±9.98) pg/ml vs. (42.09±10.71) pg/ml; P<0.01]. The TNF-α secretion level did not significantly changed (P>0.05). In direct contact culture system, the percentage of target cells was (22.01±3.05) % and γ-IFN secretion level was (104.5±12.84) pg/ml in CD4(+) CCR4(-)CCR6(-)CXCR3(-) cells+ CD8(+) T cells+ gastric cancer cells group, which was higher than (16.08±2.61)% and (76.45±8.56) pg/ml in CD8(+) T cells+ gastric cancer cells group (P<0.01). However, the percentage of target cells was (14.47±3.14)% and γ-IFN secretion level was (70.45±19.43) pg/ml in CD4(+) CCR4(-)CCR6(-)CXCR3(-) cells+ CD8(+) T cells+ gastric cancer cells+ anti-IL-9 neutralizing antibody group, which were lower than those in CD4(+) CCR4(-)CCR6(-)CXCR3(-) cells+ CD8(+) T cells+ gastric cancer cells group (P<0.01). Conclusion: Tumor-infiltrating Th9 cells and the secreting IL-9 promote the activity of CD8(+) T cells in gastric cancer patients, and enhance anti-tumor immune response.

Brain-gut axis and psychiatric disorders: A perspective from bibliometric and visual analysis

BACKGROUND

The Brain-Gut Axis, a bidirectional signaling pathway that connects the intestinal and central nervous systems, plays an important role in the development of psychiatric disorders. However, the overall research trends in this field are unclear. This study explored the patterns of research on the brain-gut axis and psychiatric disorders from a bibliometric perspective.

METHODS

Relevant data were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, with search terms on psychiatric disorders and the brain-gut axis. R (version 4.2.0), VOSviewer (version 1.6.17), CiteSpace software, and the online bibliometric platform were used in the data analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 2,298 articles published between 1993 and 2022 were identified, showing an increasing trend over time. China (1,859; 20.70%) was the country that contributed the most publications. The journal Nutrients (95; 4.13%) published the most publications. Cryan JF (153; H-index=73) and University College Cork (559; 22.54%) were the most influential author and the most productive institution, respectively. The high-frequency keywords were clustered into six themes, including neurodegenerative diseases, stress-related diseases, immune, brain behavior, depression, and probiotic-related topics; of which, depression (880; 2019), anxiety (207; 2018) and autism (191; 2019) were the most studied psychiatric disorders in the past 5 years. "Depressive symptom" (2019-2020) and "probiotic treatment" (2019-2020) were the main areas addressed in recent years.

CONCLUSION

Research on the brain-gut axis and psychiatric disorders has attracted increasing attention in the past decade, with most publications originating from high-income level countries. This study provides a useful perspective on understanding the research trends, key hot topics, and research gaps in this expanding field.

Visual motion processing in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia: An fMRI study

Dorsal stream is an important pathway for visual information transmission. As a part of the dorsal pathway, the middle temporal visual motion areas (V5/MT+) are mainly responsible for visual motion processing and the ability of visual motion processing is closely related to reading. Compared with alphabetic scripts, the visual structure of Chinese characters is more complex and there are no clear grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules. So the ability of visual analysis plays an important role in Chinese character processing. This study first investigated the brain activation of Chinese dyslexic children and children of the same chronological age when they observed coherent motion stimuli. ROI analysis indicated that only the activation of left V5/MT+ was significantly weaker in dyslexics than that in the control group. The activity of the magnocellular-dorsal stream was closely related to orthographic awareness in the combined data (two groups) and the typical children. In dyslexia group, the stronger the activation of V5/MT+ was, the worse the phonological awareness, rapid naming performance and orthographic awareness were. In short, Chinese dyslexic children were deficient in the activation of the left V5/MT+ and the activity of the magnocellular-dorsal pathway was closely related to orthographic awareness in Chinese pupils.

Diterpenes from Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis (A.Chev.) Gaussen ex Bui (Pinaceae) and their protective effects in LPS-treated BEAS-2B cells

Eight previously undescribed diterpenoids, rosins A-H, and nine known diterpenoids were isolated from the resin from Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis (A.Chev.) Gaussen ex Bui (Pinaceae) extracted with 95% ethanol. Their structures were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, J-based configuration analysis (JBCA), NOESY spectra, calculated NMR chemical shifts and electronic circular dichroic (ECD) spectra. All compounds were evaluated for their protective effects in LPS-treated human normal lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B), and the cell viability was significantly increased after treatment with compounds 5, 10, 12, or 15 at a concentration of 10 μM.

[Clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with newly-diagnosed multiple myeloma with t(11;14)]

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics and prognosis of multiple myeloma (MM) patients with t(11;14). Methods: The clinical data of patients newly diagnosed with MM with t(11;14), which confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), from January 1, 2016 to May 31, 2021 in Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was retrospectively collected. A total of 45 patients were included. Bortezomib based induction therapy were given to 88.9% (40/45) patients, while 11.1% (5/45) received Imids-based therapy. Fourteen patients underwent the autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT). The clinical characteristics, overall response rate (ORR), progression free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and risk factors affecting survival were analyzed. Results: The average age of patients were (58.8±9.6) years, and 62.2%(28/45)were male. A relatively high incidence of bone lesion 82.2%(37/45)was observed. After 4 cycles induction therapy, the ORR was 66.7% (30/45), and ≥very good partial response (VGPR) was 31.3% (14/45). The rate of ≥VGPR increased to 92.9% (13/14) after AHSCT. The follow-up time [M(Q₁,Q₃)] was 27(20,42)months. The PFS was 34 (95%CI: 23-45) months, the median OS was 44 (95%CI:33-51) months. Median PFS were 48 (only 3 cases of progressive disease, CI not available) months and 24 (95%CI:13-35) months in the transplantation group and non-transplant group respectively (P=0.115). Median OS were 60 (only 1 case of death, CI not available) months and 48 (95%CI:22-74) months in the transplantation group and non-transplantation group, respectively (P=0.238). Cox regression analysis indicated that the number of plasma cell ≥50% in bone marrow and CD20 expression on myeloma cells were the risk factors for PFS[OR=3.272,95%CI:1.167-9.170,P=0.024;OR=3.480,95%CI:1.082-11.234,P=0.036]. No significant effective factor on OS was found. Conclusions: For multiple myeloma patient with t(11;14), the response rate with novel agents induction therapy is not high, but autologous stem cell transplantation can deepen remission. The high burden of bone marrow plasma cells and the expression of CD20 may be associated with the poor prognosis.
