Ammonium Sulfate to Modulate Crystallization for High-Performance Rigid and Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting widespread research and attention as highly promising candidates in the field of electronic photovoltaics owing to their exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, rigid or flexible PSCs still face challenges in preparing full-coverage and low-defect perovskite films, as well as achieving highly reproducible and highly stable devices. Herein, a multifunctional additive 2-aminoethyl hydrogen sulfate (AES) is designed to regulate the film crystallization and thereby form flat and pinhole-free perovskite films. It is found that the introduction of AES can effectively passivate defects, restrain charge carrier recombination, and then achieve a higher fill factor. As seen with grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), this approach does not affect the crystal orientation distribution. It is observed that AES addition shows a universality across different perovskite components since the PCE is improved up to 20.7% for FA0.97MA0.03Pb(I0.97Br0.03)3-AES, 22.85% for Cs0.05FA0.95PbI3-AES, 22.23% for FAPbI2.7Br0.3-AES, and 23.32% for FAPI-AES rigid devices. Remarkably, the non-encapsulated flexible Cs0.05 (FA0.85MA0.15)0.95Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 device with AES additive delivers a PCE of 20.1% and maintains over 97% of its initial efficiency under ambient conditions (25 ± 5% relative humidity) over 2280 h of aging.

Pulse potential mediated selectivity for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid

Preventing the deactivation of noble metal-based catalysts due to self-oxidation and poisonous adsorption is a significant challenge in organic electro-oxidation. In this study, we employ a pulsed potential electrolysis strategy for the selective electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid over a Pt-based catalyst. In situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and finite element simulations reveal that the pulsed potential could tailor the catalyst's oxidation and surface micro-environment. This prevents the overaccumulation of poisoning intermediate species and frees up active sites for the re-adsorption of OH adsorbate and glycerol. The pulsed potential electrolysis strategy results in a higher glyceric acid selectivity (81.8%) than constant-potential electrocatalysis with 0.7 VRHE (37.8%). This work offers an efficient strategy to mitigate the deactivation of noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

Catalyst Selection over an Electrochemical Reductive Coupling Reaction toward Direct Electrosynthesis of Oxime from NOx and Aldehyde

Aqueous electrochemical coupling reactions, which enable the green synthesis of complex organic compounds, will be a crucial tool in synthetic chemistry. However, a lack of informed approaches for screening suitable catalysts is a major obstacle to its development. Here, we propose a pioneering electrochemical reductive coupling reaction toward direct electrosynthesis of oxime from NOx and aldehyde. Through integrating experimental and theoretical methods, we screen out the optimal catalyst, i.e., metal Fe catalyst, that facilitates the enrichment and C-N coupling of key reaction intermediates, all leading to high yields (e.g., ∼99% yield of benzaldoxime) for the direct electrosynthesis of oxime over Fe. With a divided flow reactor, we achieve a high benzaldoxime production of 22.8 g h-1 gcat-1 in ∼94% isolated yield. This work not only paves the way to the industrial mass production of oxime via electrosynthesis but also offers references for the catalyst selection of other electrochemical coupling reactions.

[Clinical features and prognostic analysis of testicular relapse in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia]

Objective: To investigate the clinical features and prognosis of testicular relapse in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Methods: Clinical data including the age, time from initial diagnosis to recurrence, relapse site, and therapeutic effect of 37 pediatric ALL with testicular relapse and treated in Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences between November 2011 and December 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were grouped according to different clinical data. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to evaluate the overall survival (OS) rate and event free survival (EFS) rate for univariate analysis, and Cox proportional-hazards regression model was used to evaluate the influencing factors of OS rate and EFS rate for multivariate analysis. Results: The age at initial diagnosis of 37 pediatric testicular relapse patients was (5±3) years and the time from initial diagnosis to testicular recurrence was (37±15) months. The follow-up time was 43 (22, 56) months. Twenty-three patients (62%) were isolated testis relapse. The 5-year OS rate and EFS rate of the 37 relapsed children were (60±9) % and (50±9) % respectively. Univariate analysis showed that the 2-year EFS rate in the group of patients with time from initial diagnosis to testicular recurrence >28 months was significantly higher than those ≤28 months ((69±10)% vs. (11±11)%, P<0.05), 2-year EFS rate of the isolated testicular relapse group was significantly higher than combined relapse group ((66±11)% vs. (20±13) %, P<0.05), 2-year EFS rate of chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell treatment after relapse group was significantly higher than without CAR-T cell treatment after relapse group ((78±10)% vs. (15±10)%, P<0.05). ETV6-RUNX1 was the most common genetic aberration in testicular relapsed ALL (38%, 14/37). The 4-year OS and EFS rate of patients with ETV6-RUNX1 positive were (80±13) % and (64±15) %, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified relapse occurred≤28 months after first diagnosis (HR=3.09, 95%CI 1.10-8.72), combined relapse (HR=4.26, 95%CI 1.34-13.52) and CAR-T cell therapy after relapse (HR=0.15,95%CI 0.05-0.51) were independent prognostic factors for 2-year EFS rate (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The outcome of testicular relapse in pediatric ALL was poor. They mainly occurred 3 years after initial diagnosis. ETV6-RUNX1 is the most common abnormal gene.Patients with ETV6-RUNX1 positive often have a favorable outcome. Early relapse and combined relapse indicate unfavorable prognosis, while CAR-T cell therapy could significantly improve the survival rate of children with testicular recurrence.

Clinical characteristics, outcomes and risk factors for mortality in hospitalized diabetes and chronic kidney disease patients after COVID-19 infection following widespread vaccination

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 poses a significant threat to patients with comorbidities, such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). China experienced a nationwide COVID-19 endemic from December 2022 to January 2023, which is the first occurrence of such an outbreak following China's widespread administration of COVID-19 vaccinations.

METHODS

A total of 338 patients with diabetes and CKD combined with COVID-19 infection between December 7, 2022 and January 31, 2023 were included in this study. The end follow-up date was February 10, 2023. Univariate analysis and multivariate Cox analysis were used to analyze risk factors for death.

RESULTS

During the 50-day median follow-up period, 90 patients in the study cohort died, for a mortality rate of 26.63%. The median age of the study cohort was 74 years, with a male predominance of 74%. During hospitalization, 21% of patients had incident AKI, 17% of patients experienced stroke, and 40% of patients experienced respiratory failure. Cox proportional hazard regression showed that older age, a diagnosis of severe or critically severe COVID-19 infection, incident AKI and respiratory failure, higher level of average values of fasting glucose during hospitalization, UA, and total bilirubin were independent risk factors for death in our multivariate model.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings highlight the critical importance of identifying and managing comorbid risk factors for COVID-19, especially among the elderly, in order to optimize clinical outcomes, even after COVID-19 vaccination.

Microstrain and Crystal Orientation Variation within Naked Triple-Cation Mixed Halide Perovskites under Heat, UV, and Visible Light Exposure

The instability of perovskite absorbers under various environmental stressors is the most significant obstacle to widespread commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Herein, we study the evolution of crystal structure and microstrain present in naked triple-cation mixed CsMAFA-based perovskite films under heat, UV, and visible light (1 Sun) conditions by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). We find that the microstrain is gradient distributed along the surface normal of the films, decreasing from the upper surface to regions deeper within the film. Moreover, heat, UV, and visible light treatments do not interfere with the crystalline orientations within annealed polycrystalline films. However, when subjected to heat, the naked perovskite films exhibit a rapid component decomposition, induced by phase separation and ion migration. Conversely, under exposure to UV and 1 Sun light soaking, the naked perovskite films undergo a self-optimization structure evolution during degradation and develop into smoother films with reduced surface potential fluctuations.

Construction of Ag-Co(OH)2 Tandem Heterogeneous Electrocatalyst Induced Aldehyde Oxidation and the Co-Activation of Reactants for Biomass Effective and Multi-Selective Upgrading

The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) provides a feasible way for high value utilization of biomass resources. However, how to regulate the selective synthesis of multiple value-added products is still a great challenge. Cobalt-based compound is a promising catalyst due to its direct and indirect oxidation properties, but its weak adsorption capacity restricts its further development. Herein, by constructing Ag-Co(OH)2 heterogeneous catalyst, we realize the efficient and selective synthesis of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furanoic acid (HMFCA) and 2, 5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) value-added products at different potential ranges. Based on in-situ infrared spectroscopy, quasi-operando X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, zeta potential, electrochemical measurements and density functional theory calculations, it is proved that the addition of Ag can effectively promote the oxidation of aldehyde group to carboxyl group, and then generate HMFCA at low potential. Moreover, the introduction of Ag can activate cobalt-based compound, thus strengthening the adsorption of organic molecules and OH- species, and promoting the formation of FDCA. This work achieves the selective synthesis of two value-added chemicals by one tandem catalyst and deeply analyzes the adsorption enhancement mechanism of the catalyst, which provides a powerful reference and guidance for the design and development of efficient multi-component heterogeneous catalysts. Intratumoural and peritumoural CT-based radiomics for diagnosing lepidic-predominant adenocarcinoma in patients with pure ground-glass nodules: a machine learning approach

AIM

To develop and validate a diagnostic model utilising machine-learning algorithms that differentiates lepidic predominant adenocarcinoma (LPA) from other pathological subtypes in patients with pure ground-glass nodules (pGGNs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This bicentric study was conducted across two medical centres and included 151 patients diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma based on histopathological confirmation of pGGNs. The training cohort consisted of 99 patients from Institution 1, while the test cohort included 52 patients from Institution 2. Radiomics features were extracted from both tumours and the 2 mm peritumoural parenchyma. The tumoural and peritumoural radiomics were designated as Modeltumoural and Modelperitumoural, respectively. The diagnostic efficacy of various models was evaluated through the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Subsequently, a machine-learning-based prediction model that combined Modeltumoural, Modelperitumoural, and Modelclinical-radiological was developed to differentiate LPA from other pathological subtypes in patients with pGGNs.

RESULTS

Modeltumoural achieved area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.762 and 0.783 in the training and validation sets, respectively. Modelperitumoural attained AUCs of 0.742 and 0.667, and Modelclinical-radiological generated an AUC of 0.727 and 0.739 in the training and validation sets, respectively. Among the machine-learning models evaluated, gradient boosting machines demonstrated the best diagnostic efficacy, with accuracy, AUC, F1 score, and log loss values of 0.885, 0.956, 0.943, and 0.260, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The combined model based on machine learning that incorporated tumour and peritumoural parenchyma, as well as clinical and imaging characteristics, may offer benefits in assessing the pathological subtype of pGGNs.

Selective Electroreduction of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Dimethylfuran in Neutral Electrolytes via Hydrogen Spillover and Adsorption Configuration Adjustment

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), one of the essential C6 biomass derivatives, has been deeply investigated in electrocatalytic reduction upgrading. Nevertheless, the high product selectivity and rational design strategy of electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic HMF reduction is still a challenge. Here, a high selective electro-reduction of HMF to dimethylfuran (DMF) on palladium (Pd) single atom loaded on titanium dioxide (Pd SA/TiO2 ) via hydrogen spillover and adsorption configuration adjustment in neutral electrolytes is achieved. Combining density functional theory calculations and in situ characterization, it is revealed that Pd single atom could weaken the interaction between Pd atoms and adsorbed hydrogen (*H) to promote the *H spillover for increasing *H coverage on the surface and maintain the tilted adsorption configuration to activate C═O bond; thus the selectivity of DMF on Pd SA/TiO2 increases to 90.33%. Besides, it is elaborated that low *H coverage on TiO2 favors the formation of bis(hydroxymethyl)hydro-furoin (BHH), and the flat adsorption configuration of HMF on Pd nanoparticles benefits to form 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF). This work provides a promising approach for modifying electrocatalysts to realize the selective electroreduction of HMF to value-added products.

Vacancy-induced catalytic mechanism for alcohol electrooxidation on nickel-based electrocatalyst

Owing to outstanding performances, nickel-based electrocatalysts are commonly used in electrochemical alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs), and the active phase is usually vacancy-rich nickel oxide/hydroxide (NiOx Hy ) species. However, researchers are not aware of the catalytic role of atom vacancy in AORs. Here, we study vacancy-induced catalytic mechanisms for AORs on NiOx Hy species. As to AORs on oxygen-vacancy-poor β-Ni(OH)2 , the only redox mediator is electrooxidation-induced electrophilic lattice oxygen species, which can only catalyze the dehydrogenation process (e.g., the electrooxidation of primary alcohol to carboxylic acid) instead of the C-C bond cleavage. Hence, vicinal diol electrooxidation reaction involving the C-C bond cleavage is not feasible with oxygen-vacancy-poor β-Ni(OH)2 . Only through oxygen vacancy-induced adsorbed oxygen-mediated mechanism, can oxygen-vacancy-rich NiOx Hy species catalyze the electrooxidation of vicinal diol to carboxylic acid and formic acid accompanied with the C-C bond cleavage. Crucially, we examine how vacancies and vacancy-induced catalytic mechanisms work during AORs on NiOx Hy species.

A Practical Approach Toward Highly Reproducible and High-Quality Perovskite Films Based on an Aging Treatment

Solution processing of hybrid perovskite semiconductors is a highly promising approach for the fabrication of cost-effective electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, challenges with this approach lie in overcoming the controllability of the perovskite film morphology and the reproducibility of device efficiencies. Here, a facile and practical aging treatment (AT) strategy is reported to modulate the perovskite crystal growth to produce sufficiently high-quality perovskite thin films with improved homogeneity and full-coverage morphology. The resulting AT-films exhibit fewer defects, faster charge carrier transfer/extraction, and suppressed non-radiative recombination compared with reference. The AT-devices achieve a noticeable improvement in the reproducibility, operational stability, and photovoltaic performance of devices, with the average efficiency increased by 16%. It also demonstrates the feasibility and scalability of AT strategy in optimizing the film morphology and device performance for other perovskite components including MAPbI3 , (MAPbBr3 )15 (FAPbI3 )85 , and Cs0.05 (MAPbBr3 )0.17 (FAPbI3 )0.83 . This method opens an effective avenue to improve the quality of perovskite films and photovoltaic devices in a scalable and reproducible manner.

Interfacial Micro-Environment of Electrocatalysis and Its Applications for Organic Electro-Oxidation Reaction

Conventional designing principal of electrocatalyst is focused on the electronic structure tuning, on which effectively promotes the electrocatalysis. However, as a typical kind of electrode-electrolyte interface reaction, the electrocatalysis performance is also closely dependent on the electrocatalyst interfacial micro-environment (IME), including pH, reactant concentration, electric field, surface geometry structure, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, etc. Recently, organic electro-oxidation reaction (OEOR), which simultaneously reduces the anodic polarization potential and produces value-added chemicals, has emerged as a competitive alternative to oxygen evolution reaction, and the role IME played in OEOR is receiving great interest. Thus, this article provides a timely review on IME and its applications toward OEOR. In this review, the IME for conventional gas-involving reactions, as a contrast, is first presented, and then the recent progresses of IME toward diverse typical OEOR are summarized; especially, some representative works are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, cutting-edge analytical methods and characterization techniques are introduced to comprehensively understand the role IME played in OEOR. In the last section, perspectives and challenges of IME regulation for OEOR are shared.

Source apportionment and ozone formation mechanism of VOCs considering photochemical loss in Guangzhou, China

Understanding the sources and impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on ozone formation is challenging when the traditional method does not account for their photochemical loss. In this study, online monitoring of 56 VOCs was carried out in summer and autumn during high ozone pollution episodes. The photochemical age method was used to evaluate the atmospheric chemical loss of VOCs and to analyze the effects on characteristics, sources, and ozone formation of VOC components. The initial concentrations during daytime were 5.12 ppbv and 4.49 ppbv higher than the observed concentrations in the summer and autumn, respectively. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model identified 5 major emission sources. However, the omission of the chemical loss of VOCs led to underestimating the contributions of sources associated with highly reactive VOC components, such as those produced by biogenic emissions and solvent usage. Conversely it resulted in overestimating the contributions from VOC components with lower chemical activity such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage, vehicle emissions, and gasoline evaporation. Furthermore, the estimation of ozone formation may be underestimated when the atmospheric photochemical loss is not taken into account. The ozone formation potential (OFP) method and propylene-equivalent concentration method both underestimated ozone formation by 53.24 ppbv and 47.25 ppbc, respectively, in the summer, and by 40.34 ppbv and 26.37 ppbc, respectively, in the autumn. The determination of the ozone formation regime based on VOC chemical loss was more acceptable. In the summer, the ozone formation regime changed from the VOC-limited regime to the VOC-NOx transition regime, while in the autumn, the ozone formation regime changed from the strong VOC-limited regime to the weak VOC-limited regime. To obtain more thorough and precise conclusions, further monitoring and analysis studies will be conducted in the near future on a wider variety of VOC species such as oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs).

Integrated Tandem Electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical Coupling of Biomass and Nitrate to Sustainable Alanine

Alanine is widely employed for synthesizing polymers, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. Electrocatalytic coupling of biomass molecules and waste nitrate is attractive for the nitrate removal and alanine production under ambient conditions. However, the reaction efficiency is relatively low due to the activation of the stable substrates, and the coupling of two reactive intermediates remains challenging. Herein, we realize the integrated tandem electrochemical-chemical-electochemical synthesis of alanine from the biomass-derived pyruvic acid (PA) and waste nitrate (NO3 - ) catalyzed by PdCu nano-bead-wires (PdCu NBWs). The overall reaction pathway is demonstrated as a multiple-step catalytic cascade process via coupling the reactive intermediates NH2 OH and PA on the catalyst surface. Interestingly, in this integrated tandem electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical catalytic cascade process, Cu facilitates the electrochemical reduction of nitrate to NH2 OH intermediates, which chemically couple with PA to form the pyruvic oxime, and Pd promotes the electrochemical reduction of pyruvic oxime to the desirable alanine. This work provides a green strategy to convert waste NO3 - to wealth and enriches the substrate scope of renewable biomass feedstocks to produce high-value amino acids.

Correlating the Valence State with the Adsorption Behavior of a Cu-Based Electrocatalyst for Furfural Oxidation with Anodic Hydrogen Production Reaction

The low-potential furfural oxidation reaction (FFOR) on a Cu-based electrocatalyst can produce H2 at the anode, thereby providing a bipolar H2 production system with an ultralow cell voltage. However, the intrinsic activity and stability of the Cu-based electrocatalyst for the FFOR remain unsatisfactory for practical applications. This study investigates the correlation between the valence state and the adsorption behavior of the Cu-based electrocatalyst in furfural oxidation. Cu0 is the adsorption site with low intrinsic activity. Cu+ , which exists in the form of Cu(OH)ads in alkaline electrolytes, has no adsorption ability but can improve the performance of Cu0 by promoting the adsorption of FF. Moreover, a mixed-valence Cu-based electrocatalyst (MV Cu) with high intrinsic activity and stability is prepared electrochemically. With the MV Cu catalyst, the assembled dual-side H2 production electrolyzer has a low electricity requirement of only 0.24 kWh mH2 -3 at an ultralow cell voltage of 0.3 V, and it exhibits sufficient stability. This study not only correlates the valence state with the adsorption behavior of the Cu-based electrocatalyst for the low-potential FFOR with anodic H2 production but also reveals the mechanism of deactivation to provide design principles for Cu-based electrocatalysts with satisfactory stability.

Nanoscale LiZnN - Luminescent Half-Heusler Quantum Dots

Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots are a well-established technology, with numerous materials available either commercially or through the vast body of literature. The prevalent materials are cadmium-based and are unlikely to find general acceptance in most applications. While the III-V family of materials is a likely substitute, issues remain about its long-term suitability, and other earth-abundant materials are being explored. In this report, we highlight a nanoscale half-Heusler semiconductor, LiZnN, composed of readily available elements as a potential alternative system to luminescent II-VI and III-V nanoparticle quantum dots.

[Genomics of next generation sequencing in pediatric B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia and its impact on minimal residual disease]

Objective: To describe the gene mutation profile of newly diagnosed pediatric B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and analyze its effect on minimal residual disease (MRD). Methods: A total of 506 newly diagnosed B-ALL children treated in Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from September 2018 to July 2021 were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. The enrolled children were divided into MRD ≥1.00% group and <1.00% group according to MRD results on the 19th day since chemotherapy, and MRD ≥0.01% group and <0.01% group according to MRD results on the 46th day. Clinical characteristics and gene mutations of two groups were compared. Comparisons between groups were performed with chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Independent risk factors of MRD results on the 19th day and the 46th day were analyzed by Logistic regression model. Results: Among all 506 patients, there were 318 males and 188 females. On the 19th day, there were 114 patients in the MRD ≥1.00% group and 392 patients in the MRD <1.00% group. On the 46th day, there were 76 patients in the MRD ≥0.01% group and 430 patients in the MRD <0.01% group. A total of 187 gene mutations were detected in 487 (96.2%) of 506 children. The most common gene mutations were signal transduction-related KRAS gene mutations in 111 cases (22.8%) and NRAS gene mutations in 99 cases (20.3%). Multivariate analysis showed that PTPN11 (OR=1.92, 95%CI 1.00-3.63), KMT2A (OR=3.51, 95%CI 1.07-11.50) gene mutations and TEL-AML1 (OR=0.48, 95%CI 0.27-0.87), BCR-ABL1 (OR=0.27, 95%CI 0.08-0.92) fusion genes and age >10 years (OR=1.91, 95%CI 1.12-3.24) were independent influencing factors for MRD ≥1.00% on the 19th day. BCORL1 (OR=2.96, 95%CI 1.18-7.44), JAK2 (OR=2.99, 95%CI 1.07-8.42) and JAK3 (OR=4.83, 95%CI 1.50-15.60) gene mutations and TEL-AML1 (OR=0.43, 95%CI 0.21-0.87) fusion gene were independent influencing factors for MRD ≥0.01% on the 46th day. Conclusions: Children with B-ALL are prone to genetic mutations, with abnormalities in the RAS signaling pathway being the most common. Signal transduction related PTPN11, JAK2 and JAK3 gene mutations, epigenetic related KMT2A gene mutation and transcription factor related BCORL1 gene mutation are independent risk factors for MRD.

Electrocatalytic synthesis of nylon-6 precursor at almost 100% yield

The application of the cyclohexanone-hydroxylamine process using preformed hydroxylamine is widespread in the caprolactam industry, a crucial step to produce nylon-6. However, with strict demands on sustainability and safety, two shortcomings in this process-harsh reaction conditions and the potential danger posed by explosive hydroxylamine-need to be urgently overcome. In this study, we presented a direct electrosynthesis method for cyclohexanone oxime using nitrogen oxides and cyclohexanone with almost 100% yield, which eliminated preformed hydroxylamine and demonstrated a simple strategy for green production of caprolactam. Combining theoretical calculations and in situ characterizations, the high efficiency of electrocatalysts is attributed to their ability to accumulate adsorbed hydroxylamine and cyclohexanone. Fe electrocatalysts can meet the above requirements and achieve a production rate of 55.9 g h-1 gcat-1 in a flow cell with almost 100% yield of cyclohexanone oxime. Beckmann rearrangement of the resulting cyclohexanone oxime produced 8.6 g/cycle of caprolactam. This study not only provides a theoretical basis for electrocatalyst design for C-N coupling reactions but also illuminates the tantalizing possibility to upgrade the caprolactam industry toward safety and sustainability through direct electrosynthesis of cyclohexanone oximes.

Unraveling the electrophilic oxygen-mediated mechanism for alcohol electrooxidation on NiO

Aqueous organic electrosynthesis such as nucleophile oxidation reaction (NOR) is an economical and green approach. However, its development has been hindered by the inadequate understanding of the synergy between the electrochemical and non-electrochemical steps. In this study, we unravel the NOR mechanism for the primary alcohol/vicinal diol electrooxidation on NiO. Thereinto, the electrochemical step is the generation of Ni³⁺-(OH)_ads, and the spontaneous reaction between Ni³⁺-(OH)_ads and nucleophiles is an electrocatalyst-induced non-electrochemical step. We identify that two electrophilic oxygen-mediated mechanisms (EOMs), EOM involving hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and EOM involving C-C bond cleavage, play pivotal roles in the electrooxidation of primary alcohol to carboxylic acid and the electrooxidation of vicinal diol to carboxylic acid and formic acid, respectively. Based on these findings, we establish a unified NOR mechanism for alcohol electrooxidation and deepen the understanding of the synergy between the electrochemical and non-electrochemical steps during NOR, which can guide the sustainable electrochemical synthesis of organic chemicals.

A sex- and site-specific relationship between body mass index and osteoarthritis: evidence from observational and genetic analyses

OBJECTIVE

We primarily aimed to investigate whether there are phenotypic and genetic links underlying body mass index (BMI) and overall osteoarthritis (OA). We then intended to explore whether the relationships differ across sexes and sites.

METHOD

We first evaluated the phenotypic association between BMI and overall OA using data from the UK Biobank. We then investigated the genetic relationship leveraging summary statistics of the hitherto largest genome-wide association studies performed for BMI and overall OA. Finally, we repeated all analyses in a sex- (female, male) and site- (knee, hip, spine) specific manner.

RESULTS

Observational analysis suggested an increased hazard of diagnosed OA per 5 kg/m² increment in BMI (hazard ratio = 1.38, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.37-1.39). A positive overall genetic correlation was observed for BMI and OA (r_g = 0.43, P = 4.72 × 10^-133), corroborated by 11 significant local signals. Cross-trait meta-analysis identified 34 pleiotropic loci shared between BMI and OA, of which seven were novel. Transcriptome-wide association study revealed 29 shared gene-tissue pairs, targeting nervous, digestive, and exo/endocrine systems. Mendelian randomization demonstrated a robust BMI-OA causal relationship (odds ratio = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.42-1.52). A similar pattern of effects was observed in sex- and site-specific analyses, with BMI affecting OA comparably in both sexes and most strongly in the knee.

CONCLUSION

Our work demonstrates an intrinsic relationship underlying BMI and overall OA, reflected by a pronounced phenotypic association, significant biological pleiotropy, and a putative causal link. Stratified analysis further reveals that the effects are distinct across sites and comparable across sexes.

Effect of Multicomponent Intervention on Functional Decline in Chinese Older Adults: A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial

OBJECTIVES

To confirm whether multicomponent exercise following vivifrail recommendations was an effective method for improving physical ability, cognitive function, gait, balance, and muscle strength in Chinese older adults.

METHODS

This was a multicenter and randomized clinical trial conducted in Jiangsu, China, from April 2021 to April 2022. Intervention lasted for 12 weeks and 104 older adults with functional declines were enrolled. All participants were randomly assigned to a control (usual care plus health education) or exercise group (usual care plus health education plus exercise). Primary outcomes were the change score of Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and activities of daily living (ADL). The secondary outcomes included instrumental activities of daily living, Tinetti scores, Frailty score, short-form Mini Nutritional Assessment, Mini-Mental State Examination, Geriatric Depression Scale-15, the 12-item Short Form Survey, 4-meter gait speed test, 6-min walking distance, grip strength, and body composition analysis.

RESULTS

Among the participants, the average age was 85 (82, 88) years. After 12 weeks of follow-up, the exercise group showed a significant improvement in SPPB, with a change of 2 points (95% confidence interval [0, 3.5], P<0.001) compared to control. In contrast, SPPB remained stable in the control group. Compared to the control group, ADL improved in the exercise group, as did instrumental activities of daily living, Tinetti, Frailty, Short Form Survey, 4-meter gait speed test, and 6-min walking distance. Although there was no significant difference between groups in body composition analysis after post-intervention, the exercise group still improved in soft lean mass (P=0.002), fat-free mass (P=0.002), skeletal muscle mass index (P<0.001), fat-free mass index (P=0.004), appendicular skeletal muscle mass (P<0.001), and leg muscle mass (P<0.001), while the control group had no significant increase. No difference was observed in adverse events during trial period.

CONCLUSIONS

The multicomponent exercise intervention following vivifrail recommendations is an effective method for older adults with functional decline and can reverse the functional decline and improve gait, balance, and muscle strength. Additionally, the 12-week multicomponent exercise method provides guidance for Chinese medical professionals working in the field of geriatrics and is a promising method to improve physical function in the general population.

Anodic Cross-Coupling of Biomass Platform Chemicals to Sustainable Biojet Fuel Precursors

Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass platform chemicals to jet fuel precursors is a promising approach to alleviate the energy crisis caused by the excessive exploitation and consumption of non-renewable fossil fuels. However, an aqueous electrolyte has been rarely studied. In this study, we demonstrate an anodic electrocatalysis route for producing jet fuel precursors from biomass platform chemicals on Ni-based electrocatalysts in an aqueous electrolyte at room temperature and atmosphere pressure. The desired product exhibited high selectivity for the jet fuel precursor (95.4%) and an excellent coulombic efficiency of 210%. A series of in situ characterizations demonstrated that Ni²⁺ species were the active sites for the coupling process. In addition, the coupling reaction could be achieved by generating radical cations and inhibiting the side reaction. First, the electrochemical process could activate the furfural (FF) molecule and generate radical cations, resulting in an average of 2.0 times chain propagation. The levulinic acid (LA) molecules played a vital role in the coupling reaction. The adsorption strength of LA on Ni₃N was higher than that of FF, which could inhibit the side reaction (the oxidation of FF) and achieve high selectivity. Meanwhile, the LA molecules were adsorbed on the Ni₃N surface and then disrupted the formation of Ni³⁺ species, thus favoring the coupling reaction. This work demonstrates an efficient route to produce jet fuel precursors directly from biomass platform chemicals and provides a comprehensive understanding of the anodic coupling process.

Unveiling the Adsorption Behavior and Redox Properties of PtNi Nanowire for Biomass-Derived Molecules Electrooxidation

Ni-based materials are auspicious electrocatalysts for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR), including the adsorption and conversion of HMF and OH_ad on the electrocatalyst surface. However, the intrinsic HMFOR activity of Ni-based catalysts is far from satisfactory due to the weak adsorption of HMF and OH_ad species. Herein, a set of Pt_xNi_100-x bundle nanowires (NWs) were prepared for HMFOR, which enables a low onset-potential and large current density. Operando methods reveal that Pt modulates the redox property of Ni in PtNi NWs and accelerates the oxidation of Ni²⁺-OH to Ni³⁺-O species during HMFOR. Moreover, the adsorption studies demonstrate the synergetic roles of Pt and Ni in enhancing the HMFOR activity by forming Pt-O-Ni bonds. In detail, Ni atoms modulate the d band of Pt to alter the adsorption behavior of HMF. Pt atoms promote the adsorption of OH_ad on Ni sites. This work provides design principles for HMFOR electrocatalysts by modulating the adsorption behaviors of organic molecules and OH_ad.

[Susceptibility study on the germline rare variants of bromodomain and extraterminal domain protein family-encoding genes and patients with cancer living in some regions of China]

Objective: To explore the relationship between germline rare variants of bromodomain and extraterminal domain (BET) protein family-encoding genes and susceptibility to cancer in some regions of China. Methods: Capturing probes were designed for bromodomain-containing protein 2 (BRD2), BRD3 and BRD4 genes, and Illumina high-throughput sequencing platform was used to conduct targeted sequencing of genomic DNA of peripheral blood leukocytes from 1 673 patients with cancer and 1 661 individuals without cancer recruited between October 2015 and July 2018 from Chinese PLA General Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, People's Hospital of Macheng City, Hubei Province and Geneplus-Beijing Co. Ltd. Mutation detection and analysis were carried out according to the genome analysis toolkit (GATK) best practice guidelines, ANNOVAR and VEP software were used for annotation, and germline rare variants in BET family were screened. To determine potential pathogenic germline rare variants, clinical and experimental evidence was obtained from the ClinVar database and SIFT and Polyphen-2 softwares were used to predict pathogenicity. Fisher's exact test was used to compare the difference of the carrying rate of variants in the case group and the control group, and multivariate regression analysis was performed with the SKAT software with sex and age used as covariates. Results: Among the 1 673 cancer patients, 911 were males and 762 were females, with the mean age was (57.9±11.7) years. There were 1, 111 cases (66.4%) of lung cancer, 266 cases (15.9%) of colorectal cancer, 186 cases of breast cancer (11.1%), and 110 cases (6.6%) of esophagus or gastric cancer. In the same period 1, 661 non-tumor control individuals were recruited, including 821 males and 840 females, with the mean age was (44.5±13.9) years. It was observed that there were 4 potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD2 gene carried by 17 patients with cancer, 5 potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD3 gene and 8 potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD4 gene. The carrying rate of potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD2 gene in cancer patients was 1.02% (17/1 673), significantly higher than that in controls without cancer [0 (0/1 661); OR=+∞, 95%CI: 4.81-+∞, P<0.001]. The carrying rate of potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD3 gene in cancer patients was 0.24% (4/1 673), and the difference was not statistically significant compared with controls without cancer [0.12% (2/1 661); OR=1.99, 95%CI: 0.46-10.47, P=0.690]. The carrying rate of potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD4 gene in cancer patients was 0.18% (3/1 673), and the difference was not statistically significant compared with controls without cancer [0.36% (6/1 661); OR=0.50, 95%CI: 0.14-2.08, P=0.340]. Furthermore, the dataset of whole exome sequencing of Chinese individuals in "Huabiao Project" was used as an additional control, and the rate of carrying BRD2 rare variants in cancer patients was 17/3 346 (0.51%), significantly higher than that in controls without cancer [0.07% (3/4 154); OR=7.07, 95%CI: 2.32-22.83, P<0.001]. Among the 17 patients carrying 4 potentially pathogenic germline rare variants of BRD2 gene, 9 were patients with lung cancer, 6 were patients with colorectal cancer, 1 was patient with breast cancer, and 1 was patients with esophagus or gastric cancer. The carrying rate of potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD2 gene in lung cancer patients was 0.81 (9/1 111), significantly higher than that in controls without cancer [0(0/1 661); OR=+∞, 95%CI: 3.95-+∞,P<0.001]. The carrying rate of potential pathogenic germline rare variants in BRD2 gene in patients with colorectal cancer was 2.26% (6/266), significantly higher than that in controls without cancer [0(0/1 661); OR=+∞, 95%CI: 9.03-+∞, P<0.001]. Wilcoxon rank-sum test results showed that patients with colorectal cancer carrying BRD2 rare variants had an earlier age at diagnosis [(47.0±7.4) vs (57.2±12.1) years old, P=0.017]. Conclusions: BRD2 gene may be served as a candidate genetic susceptibility gene for lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Carrying BRD2 potential pathogenic germline rare variants is associated with higher risk of lung cancer and colorectal cancer, and with earlier age of colorectal cancer.

A Pair-Electrosynthesis for Formate at Ultra-Low Voltage Via Coupling of CO2 Reduction and Formaldehyde Oxidation

Formate can be synthesized electrochemically by CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) or formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR). The CO₂RR approach suffers from kinetic-sluggish oxygen evolution reaction at the anode. To this end, an electrochemical system combining cathodic CO₂RR with anodic FOR was developed, which enables the formate electrosynthesis at ultra-low voltage. Cathodic CO₂RR employing the BiOCl electrode in H-cell exhibited formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) higher than 90% within a wide potential range from - 0.48 to - 1.32 V_RHE. In flow cell, the current density of 100 mA cm^-2 was achieved at - 0.67 V_RHE. The anodic FOR using the Cu₂O electrode displayed a low onset potential of - 0.13 V_RHE and nearly 100% formate and H₂ selectivity from 0.05 to 0.35 V_RHE. The CO₂RR and FOR were constructed in a flow cell through membrane electrode assembly for the electrosynthesis of formate, where the CO₂RR//FOR delivered an enhanced current density of 100 mA cm^-2 at 0.86 V. This work provides a promising pair-electrosynthesis of value-added chemicals with high FE and low energy consumption.

Heterogeneous-Interface-Enhanced Adsorption of Organic and Hydroxyl for Biomass Electrooxidation

Electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) provides an efficient way to obtain high-value-added biomass-derived chemicals. Compared with other transition metal oxides, CuO exhibits poor oxygen evolution reaction performance, leading to high Faraday efficiency for HMF oxidation. However, the weak adsorption and activation ability of CuO to OH^- species restricts its further development. Herein, the CuO-PdO heterogeneous interface is successfully constructed, resulting in an advanced onset-potential of the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR), a higher current density than CuO. The results of open-circuit potential, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations indicate that the introduction of PdO enhances the adsorption capacity of the organic molecule. Meanwhile, the CuO-PdO heterogeneous interface promotes the adsorption and activation of OH^- species, as demonstrated by zeta potential and electrochemical measurements. This work elucidates the adsorption enhancement mechanism of heterogeneous interfaces and provides constructive guidance for designing efficient multicomponent electrocatalysts in organic electrocatalytic reactions.

Hybrid Simulations of the Cusp and Dayside Magnetosheath Dynamics Under Quasi-Radial Interplanetary Magnetic Fields

Under quasi-radial interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF), foreshock turbulence can have an impact on the magnetosheath and cusps depending on the location of the quasi-parallel shock. We perform three-dimensional simulations of Earth's dayside magnetosphere using the hybrid code HYPERS, and compare northward and southward quasi-radial IMF configurations. We study the magnetic field configuration, fluctuations in the magnetosheath and the plasma in the regions around the northern cusp. Under northward IMF with Earthward B _x , there is a time-varying plasma depletion layer immediately outside the northern cusp. In the southward IMF case, the impact of foreshock turbulence and high-speed jets, together with magnetopause reconnection, can lead to strong density enhancements in the cusp.

[Analysis of the stressors and mental status of civil aviation pilots under the background of the major infectious disease]

Objective: To study the stressors and mental status of civil aviation pilots under the background of major infectious disease. Methods: From January to March 2021, a cluster sampling method was used to select 143 airline pilots in service as the research objects. The self-made emotion and stress source questionnaire, Chinese version of stress perception scale (CPSS) , self rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and self rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used to investigate the airline pilot population. 136 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective recovery rate of 95.1%. The measurement data conform to the normal distribution and are expressed by (x±s) . T-test and analysis of variance are used for comparison between groups, and Pearson correlation is used for correlation analysis. The data that do not conform to the normal distribution are expressed by the median and quartile [M (Q(1), Q(3)) ], and the non parametric test is used for the comparison between groups. Multiple linear stepwise regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of pressure perception. In addition, Amos 23.0 software was used to construct structural equation models of stress perception and negative emotions. Results: Under the background of the epidemic, the main sources of stress for civil aviation pilots are: the risk of possible reduction in income, the risk of contracting COVID-19, the pressure at work, and the risk of possible slow progress of upgrading. Among them, the first co pilot was more worried about the possible reduction of income than the instructor (P=0.009) ; The first co pilot and the captain of the airline were more worried about the possible slowdown of the upgrade progress than the instructor (P<0.001, P=0.014) . The mean pressure perception of pilots was higher than that of Chinese norm (t=3.11, P=0.002) . The standard scores of anxiety and depression were slightly higher than the standard scores of the Chinese norm under the non epidemic situation (t=7.00, 4.07, all P<0.001) . The results of multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed that stress perception was negatively correlated with good family relations (t=-8.50, P=0.000) , and positively correlated with worries about slow progress of upgrading, COVID-19 infection, lack of interpersonal communication and income reduction (t=3.31、3.86、2.88、2.06, P<0.05) . Pressure perception was positively correlated with negative emotion (all P<0.001) . The results of structural equation model show that stress perception affects pilots' negative emotions directly or indirectly, and its standardized total effects on anxiety, depression, hypochondriac, fear, compulsion and irritability are 0.719, 0.811, 0.403, 0.355, 0.295 and 0.244 respectively. Conclusion: Public health emergencies have an impact on the mental status of pilots. Should pay attention to the stressors and psychological conditions of pilots in time, and consider formulating measures to relieve the stress of pilots.

Comparison of amino acid digestibility and its additivity determined with slaughter or cecectomy method for yellow-feather chicken

The objective of this experiment was to compare the slaughter and cecectomy methods to determine amino acid (AA) digestibility of corn and soybean meal and their additivity in a corn-soybean meal diet. A completely randomized design was adopted to determine endogenous AA losses (EAAL) and AA digestibility in each of corn, soybean meal, and a corn-soybean meal diet using either slaughter or cecectomy methods. Each treatment contained 6 replicates with 3 chickens per replicate. The endogenous loss (EL) of histidine and glycine was lower and the EL of methionine and phenylalanine was greater when determined by slaughter vs. cecectomy (P < 0.05). The EL of arginine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, valine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and serine determined by slaughter were 1.2 to 3.2 times of those from cecectomy. The standard error (SE) of EL of 14 AA (excluding histidine and glycine) obtained by slaughter method was 2.1 to 9.6 times of those by cecectomy method. The apparent and standardized digestibility was not affected by methods for most AA except apparent digestibility of methionine, phenylalanine and glycine, and standardized digestibility of glycine in corn. The apparent and standardized digestibility of most AA except apparent digestibility of glycine and standardized digestibility of lysine, cysteine and glycine were less for slaughter versus cecectomy methods in soybean meal (P < 0.05). Using slaughter method resulted in reduced apparent digestibility of 15 AA (except glycine) and reduced standardized digestibility of 7 AA (arginine, isoleucine, leucine, valine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and proline) relative to cecectomy method (P < 0.05), but the standardized digestibility of glycine was greater when determined by slaughter vs. cecectomy methods in corn-soybean meal diet (P < 0.05). The mean value of SE of 16 AA digestibility in slaughter method was 2.9 times of that by cecectomy method. The apparent digestibility of 2 and 9 of 16 AA and the standardized digestibility of 15 and 7 of 16 AA were additive when using slaughter and cecectomy determinations, respectively. In conclusion, compared to the slaughter method, cecectomy method had less SE and EAAL but greater apparent digestibility of methionine and phenylalanine in corn, and the apparent digestibility of 15 AA (except glycine) in soybean meal and corn-soybean meal diet. Additivity in apparent and standardized AA digestibility was more inconsistent when determined with slaughter vs. cecectomy methods. These findings suggest that the cecectomy method is more suitable than the slaughter method to determine the digestibility of AA.

Activated Ni-OH Bonds in a Catalyst Facilitates the Nucleophile Oxidation Reaction

The nucleophile oxidation reaction (NOR) is of enormous significance for organic electrosynthesis and coupling for hydrogen generation. However, the nonuniform NOR mechanism limits its development. For the NOR, involving electrocatalysis and organic chemistry, both the electrochemical step and non-electrochemical process should be taken into account. The NOR of nickel-based hydroxides includes the electrogenerated dehydrogenation of the Ni²⁺ -OH bond and a spontaneous non-electrochemical process; the former determines the electrochemical activity, and the nucleophile oxidation pathway depends on the latter. Herein, the space-confinement-induced synthesis of Ni₃ Fe layered double hydroxide intercalated with single-atom-layer Pt nanosheets (Ni₃ Fe LDH-Pt NS) is reported. The synergy of interlayer Pt nanosheets and multiple defects activates Ni-OH bonds, thus exhibiting an excellent NOR performance. The spontaneous non-electrochemical steps of the NOR are revealed, such as proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET; Ni³⁺ -O + X-H = Ni²⁺ -OH + X^• ), hydration, and rearrangement. Hence, the reaction pathway of the NOR is deciphered, which not only helps to perfect the NOR mechanism, but also provides inspiration for organic electrosynthesis.

[Investigate developmental coordination disorder of kindergarten children in Zhejiang Province]

In order to investigate developmental coordination disorder (DCD) of kindergarten children in Zhejiang province, 200 ordinary kindergartens were randomly selected by stratified random sampling in 11 prefecture-level cities of Zhejiang Province, and 38 900 children from 1 000 classes in each grade were then randomly selected into the study from June 2019 to December 2019. The Little DCD Questionnaire and a self-designed questionnaire were used to screen the DCD of those children. There were 36 807 valid questionnaires, and 6.50% (2 391/36 807) of them were positive results. The results showed that boy, age ≤5 years, overweight or obesity, left handedness, comorbidity with motor or developmental disorders and premature infants were risk factors of DCD in children. As for parents and families, maternal gestational age<20 years, maternal overweight or obesity before pregnancy, low-middle level education of parents, direct family and low income of family were also associated with DCD in children. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct early prevention and intervention strategies targeting on identified risk factors among relevant population.
