Freeze-drying revolution: unleashing the potential of lyophilization in advancing drug delivery systems

Lyophilization also known as freeze-drying is a technique that has been employed to enhance the long-term durability of nanoparticles (NPs) that are utilized for drug delivery applications. This method is used to prevent their instability in suspension. However, this dehydration process can cause stress to the NPs, which can be alleviated by the incorporation of excipients like cryoprotectants and lyoprotectants. Nevertheless, the freeze-drying of NPs is often based on empirical principles without considering the physical-chemical properties of the formulations and the engineering principles of freeze-drying. For this reason, it is crucial to optimize the formulations and the freeze-drying cycle to obtain a good lyophilizate and ensure the preservation of NPs stability. Moreover, proper characterization of the lyophilizate and NPs is of utmost importance in achieving these goals. This review aims to update the recent advancements, including innovative formulations and novel approaches, contributing to the progress in this field, to obtain the maximum stability of formulations. Additionally, we critically analyze the limitations of lyophilization and discuss potential future directions. It addresses the challenges faced by researchers and suggests avenues for further research to overcome these limitations. In conclusion, this review is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the parameters involved in the freeze-drying of NPs. It will definitely aid future studies in obtaining lyophilized NPs with good quality and enhanced drug delivery and therapeutic benefits.

Maternally inherited non-syndromic hearing loss is linked with a novel mitochondrial ND6 gene mutation

BACKGROUND

Maternally inherited non-syndromic hearing loss is linked with mitochondrial DNA mutations.

AIM

This investigation demonstrates the features of a Chinese pedigree suffering from maternally inherited non-syndromic hearing loss.

METHODS

Biochemical characterizations included the measurements ofprotein synthesis levels, membrane potential, and the synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) using cybrid cell lines derived from an affected matrilineal subject and control subject.

RESULTS

Non-congenital early or late-onset/development hearing impairment has been observed in 4 of 9 in a family (matrilineal), with different degrees of hearing impairment, ranging from normal to severe. A pedigree's whole mitochondrial genome sequence analysis revealed the homoplasmic m.14502 T > C (I58V) mutation at ND6's isoleucine location-58, and specific mitocchondrial DNA polymorphisms set haplogroups M10 were highly conserved. In vitro models indicated that m.14502 T > C mutation-derived respiratory deficiency decreases ND6 protein synthesis, mitochondrial membrane potential, and ATP synthesis. These mitochondrial dysregulations enhance the generation of ROS in the mutant cells. Identifying nuclear modifiers is essential for elucidating hearing loss's pathogenesis and furnishing novel therapeutic interventions.

CONCLUSIONS

The m.14502 T > C mutation should be considered an inherited risk factor that can help diagnose. The data of this investigation help counsel families of individuals with hearing loss.

Recent Developments and Future Perspectives of Molybdenum Borides and MBenes

Metal borides have received a lot of attention recently as a potentially useful material for a wide range of applications. In particular, molybdenum-based borides and MBenes are of great significance, due to their remarkable properties like good electronic conductivity, considerable stability, high surface area, and environmental harmlessness. Therefore, in this article, the progress made in molybdenum-based borides and MBenes in recent years is reviewed. The first step in understanding these materials is to begin with an overview of their structural and electronic properties. Then synthetic technologies for the production of molybdenum borides, such as high-temperature/pressure methods, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), element reaction route, molten salt-assisted, and selective etching methods are surveyed. Then, the critical performance of these materials in numerous applications like energy storage, catalysis, biosensors, biomedical devices, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and tribology and lubrication are summarized. The review concludes with an analysis of the current progress of these materials and provides perspectives for future research. Overall, this review will offer an insightful reference for the understanding molybdenum-based borides and their development in the future.

Spontaneous Curvature Induction in an Artificial Bilayer Membrane

Maintaining lipid asymmetry across membrane leaflets is critical for functions like vesicular traffic and organelle homeostasis. However, a lack of molecular-level understanding of the mechanisms underlying membrane fission and fusion processes in synthetic systems precludes their development as artificial analogs. Here, we report asymmetry induction of a bilayer membrane formed by an extended π-conjugated molecule with oxyalkylene side chains bearing terminal tertiary amine moieties (BA1) in water. Autogenous protonation of the tertiary amines in the periphery of the bilayer by water induces anisotropic curvature, resulting in membrane fission to form vesicles and can be monitored using time-dependent spectroscopy and microscopy. Interestingly, upon loss of the induced asymmetry by extensive protonation using an organic acid restored bilayer membrane. The mechanism leading to the compositional asymmetry in the leaflet and curvature induction in the membrane is validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Studies extended to control molecules having changes in hydrophilic (BA2) and hydrophobic (BA3) segments provide insight into the delicate nature of molecular scale interactions in the dynamic transformation of supramolecular structures. The synergic effect of hydrophobic interaction and the hydrated state of BA1 aggregates provide dynamicity and unusual stability. Our study unveils mechanistic insight into the dynamic transformation of bilayer membranes into vesicles.

Zinc nitride quantum dots as an efficient probe for simultaneous fluorescence detection of Cu2+ and Mn2+ ions in water samples

The exceptional ascending heights of graphene (carbon) and boron nitride nanostructures have invited scientists to explore metal nitride nanomaterials. Herein, Zn3N2 quantum dots (QDs) were prepared via a simple hydrothermal route from the reaction between zinc nitrate hexahydrate and ammonia solution that possess efficient strength towards sensing applications of metal ions (Cu2+ and Mn2+). The as-prepared Zn3N2 QDs show bright fluorescence, displaying an emission peak at 408 nm upon excitation at 320 nm, with a quantum yield (QY) of 29.56%. It was noticed that the fluorescence intensity of Zn3N2 QDs linearly decreases with the independent addition of Cu2+ and Mn2+ ions, displaying good linearity in the ranges 2.5-50 µM and 0.05-5 µM with detection limits of 21.77 nM and of 63.82 nM for Cu2+ and Mn2+ ions, respectively. The probe was successfully tested for quantifying Cu2+ and Mn2+ in real samples including river, canal, and tap water, providing good recoveries with a relative standard deviation  < 2%. Furthermore, the masking proposition can successfully eliminate the interference if the two metal ions exist together. It was found that thiourea is efficiently able to mask Cu2+ and selectively quenches Mn2+, and L-cysteine is able to halt the quenching potential of Mn2+ and is selectively able to sense Cu2+. The Zn3N2 QDs provide a simple way for the simultaneous detection of both Cu2+ and Mn2+ ions in environmental samples at low sample preparations requirements.

Nonclassical Crystal Growth of Supramolecular Polymers in Aqueous Medium

A mechanistic understanding of the principles governing the hierarchical organization of supramolecular polymers offers a paradigm for tailoring synthetic molecular architectures at the nano to micrometric scales. Herein, the unconventional crystal growth mechanism of a supramolecular polymer of superbenzene(coronene)-diphenylalanine conjugate (Cr-FFOEt ) is demonstrated. 3D electron diffraction (3D ED), a technique underexplored in supramolecular chemistry, is effectively utilized to gain a molecular-level understanding of the gradual growth of the initially formed poorly crystalline hairy, fibril-like supramolecular polymers into the ribbon-like crystallites. The further evolution of these nanosized flat ribbons into microcrystals by oriented attachment and lateral fusion is probed by time-resolved microscopy and electron diffraction. The gradual morphological and structural changes reveal the nonclassical crystal growth pathway, where the balance of strong and weak intermolecular interactions led to a structure beyond the nanoscale. The role of distinct π-stacking and H-bonding interactions that drive the nonclassical crystallization process of Cr-FFOEt supramolecular polymers is analyzed in comparison to analogous molecules, Py-FFOEt and Cr-FF forming helical and twisted fibers, respectively. Furthermore, the Cr-FFOEt crystals formed through nonclassical crystallization are found to improve the functional properties.

Identifying Fast and Slow-Acting Antimalarial Compounds of Pandemic Response Box Against Blood-Stage Culture of Plasmodium falciparum 3D7

The evolving clinical resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and the spike in malarial cases after the COVID-19 outbreak has triggered a search for new antimalarials effective against multi-drug-resistant P. falciparum strains. In this study, we assessed the timing of action, either fast or slow-acting of 13 potent compounds of Pandemic Response Box (PRB) against blood-stage Pf3D7 strain by SYBR Green-I assay. The asynchronous culture of Pf3D7 was exposed to varying concentrations of 13 compounds, and IC50 values were determined at 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h. We identified four fast-acting compounds (MMV000008, MMV1593541, MMV020752, MMV396785) with rapid-growth inhibitory activity having IC50 values ≤ 0.3 µM at 12 and 24 h. Similarly, we determined nine slow-acting compounds (MMV159340, MMV1634492, MMV1581558, MMV689758, MMV1593540, MMV394033, MMV019724, MMV000725, MMV1557856) having IC50 values ≤ 0.5 µM at 72 and 96 h. Furthermore, the stage-specific action of the two most potent fast-acting compounds (MMV1593541 and MMV020752) against rings, trophozoites, and schizonts at 48 h of exposure revealed that ring-stage parasites showed reduced IC50 values compared to mature stage forms. Therefore, our study demonstrates for the first time the identification of the most potent fast and slow-acting compounds from PRB against blood-stage infection, suggesting its utility in clinics and considering it as a partner drug in combination therapies.

Construction of Nickel Molybdenum Sulfide/Black Phosphorous 3D Hierarchical Structure Toward High Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Supercapacitors (SCs) with outstanding versatility have a lot of potential applications in next-generation electronics. However, their practical uses are limited by their short working potential window and ultralow-specific capacity. Herein, the facile one-step in-situ hydrothermal synthesis is employed for the construction of a NiMo3 S4 /BP (black phosphorous) hybrid with a 3D hierarchical structure. After optimization, the NiMo3 S4 /BP hybrid displays a high specific capacitance of 830 F/g at 1 A/g compared to the pristine NiMo3 S4 electrode. The fabricated NiMo3 S4 /BP//NiCo2 S4 /Ti3 C2 Tx asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits a better specific capacitance of 120 F/g at 0.5 A/g, which also demonstrates a high energy density of 54 Wh/kg at 1148.53 W/kg and good cycle stability with capacity retention of 86% and 97% of Coulombic efficiency after 6000 cycles. Further from the DFT simulations, the hybrid NiMo3 S4 /BP structure shows higher conductivity and quantum capacitance, which demonstrate greater charge storage capability, due to enhanced electronic states near the Fermi level. The lower diffusion energy barrier for the electrolyte K+ ions in the hybrid structure is facilitated by improved charge transfer performance for the hybrid NiMo3 S4 /BP. This work highlights the potential significance of hybrid nanoarchitectonics and compositional tunability as an emerging method for improving the charge storage capabilities of active electrodes.

Advances and Challenges in Nanomaterial-Based Electrochemical Immunosensors for Small Cell Lung Cancer Biomarker Neuron-Specific Enolase

Early and rapid detection of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is highly significant, as it is putative biomarker for small-cell lung cancer as well as COVID-19. Electrochemical techniques have attracted substantial attention for the early detection of cancer biomarkers due to the important properties of simplicity, high sensitivity, specificity, low cost, and point-of-care detection. This work reviews the clinically relevant labeled and label-free electrochemical immunosensors developed so far for the analysis of NSE. The prevailing role of nanostructured materials as electrode matrices is thoroughly discussed. Subsequently, the key performances of various immunoassays are critically evaluated in terms of limit of detection, linear ranges, and incubation time for clinical translation. Electrochemical techniques coupled with screen-printed electrodes developing market level commercialization of NSE sensors is also discussed. Finally, the review concludes with the current challenges associated with available methods and provides a future outlook toward commercialization opportunities for easy detection of NSE.

Borocarbonitride-Based Emerging Materials for Supercapacitor Applications: Recent Advances, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

Supercapacitors have emerged as a promising energy storage technology due to their high-power density, fast charging/discharging capabilities, and long cycle life. Moreover, innovative electrode materials are extensively explored to enhance the performance, mainly the energy density of supercapacitors. Among the two-dimensional (2D) supercapacitor electrodes, borocarbonitride (BCN) has sparked widespread curiosity owing to its exceptional tunable properties concerning the change in concentration of the constituent elements, along with an excellent alternative to graphene-based electrodes. BCN, an advanced nanomaterial, possesses excellent electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and a large specific surface area. These factors contribute to supercapacitors' overall performance and reliability, making them a viable option to address the energy crisis. This review provides a detailed survey of BCN, its structural, electronic, chemical, magnetic, and mechanical properties, advanced synthesis methods, factors affecting the charge storage mechanism, and recent advances in BCN-based supercapacitor electrodes. The review embarks on the scrupulous elaboration of ways to enhance the electrochemical properties of BCN through various innovative strategies followed by critical challenges and future perspectives. BCN, as an eminent electrode material, holds great potential to revolutionize the energy landscape and support the growing energy demands of the future.

Drying behaviour of nanofluid sessile droplets on self-affine vis-à-vis corrugated nanorough surfaces

In recent years, evaporative self-assembly of sessile droplets has gained considerable attention owing to its wide applicability in many areas. While the phenomenon is well studied for smooth and isotropically rough (self-affine) surfaces, investigations comparing the outcomes on self-affine vis-à-vis corrugated surfaces remains to be done. In this experimental work, we compare the wetting and evaporation dynamics of nano-colloidal microlitre droplets on self-affine and corrugated nanorough surfaces having identical roughnesses and interface properties. The coupled influence of particle size, concentration, and surface structuring has been explored. Differences in wettability and evaporation dynamics are observed, which are explained via the interaction between wetting fluid and anisotropic surface roughness. Our findings exhibit different temporal behaviour of contact radius and angle in the evaporation process of the droplets. Further, the corrugated surface exhibits anisotropic wettability with a monotonic change in droplet shape as evaporation proceeds, finally giving rise to irregular dried patterns. The scaled rim width and crack spacing of the particulate deposits are examined. Our results can inspire fabrication of surfaces that can facilitate direction-dependent droplet motion for specific applications.

Efficient Nitric Oxide Scavenging by Urea-Functionalized Push-Pull Chromophore Modulates NO-Mediated Diseases

The excess nitric oxide (NO) produced in the body in response to bacterial/proinflammatory stimuli is responsible for several pathological conditions. The current approaches that target the production of excess NO, either through the inhibition of nitric oxide synthase enzyme or its downstream mediators have been clinically unsuccessful. With an aim to regulate the excess NO, urea-functionalized push-pull chromophores containing 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3-dienes (TCBD) or expanded TCBD (eTCBD) were developed as NO scavengers. The NMR mechanistic studies revealed that upon NO binding, these molecules are converted to uncommon stable NONOates. The unique emissive property of Urea-eTCBD enables its application in vitro, as a NO-sensor. Furthermore, the cytocompatible Urea-eTCBD, rapidly inactivated the NO released from LPS-activated cells. The therapeutic efficacy of the molecule in modulating NO-mediated pathological condition was confirmed using a carrageenan-induced inflammatory paw model and a corneal injury model. While the results confirm the advantages of scavenging the excess NO to address a multitude of NO-mediated diseases, the promising sensing and bioactivity of Urea-eTCBD can motivate further exploration of such molecules in allied areas of research.

Solution-processed CZTS thin films and its simulation study for solar cell applications with ZnTe as the buffer layer

Using zinc tellurium (ZnTe) as the buffer layer in the Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS)-based solar cells showed an improvement in overall efficiency. ZnTe is investigated as an alternative to replace the conventional toxic Cd-contained buffer layers. It may also reduce the overall cost of these cells as both layers (ZnTe and CZTS) have eco-friendly and earth-abundant constituents. The sol-gel spin coating method is used for the deposition of CZTS thin films on the corning glass substrates. The X-ray diffraction studies showed the peaks corresponding to (112), (200), (220), and (312) planes which confirmed the formation of the essential kesterite phase. The optical band gap of the deposited films was found at around 1.45 eV by the UV-visible-NIR spectrophotometer. The optimum thickness of the absorber layer (CZTS) and buffer layer (ZnTe) was investigated based on the performance of the ZnO:Al/ZnO/ZnTe/CZTS/Mo cell structure by using the AMPS-1D simulation tool. In contrast, the tool was molded by the experimentally investigated data for the constituent materials of the cell structure. The solar cells' efficiency was increased by 23.47% at 2500 nm and 50 nm thickness of the CZTS and ZnTe layers, respectively. In addition, it was analyzed and found that the current density value showed an improvement with operating temperature as it is one of the requirements in the high solar radiation areas where the temperature even rises more than 50 °C in the summer.

Repurposing Polyether Ionophores as a New-Class of Anti-SARS-Cov-2 Agents as Adjunct Therapy

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants have posed a significant threat to humankind in tackling the viral spread. Furthermore, currently repurposed drugs and frontline antiviral agents have failed to cure severe ongoing infections effectively. This insufficiency has fuelled research for potent and safe therapeutic agents to treat COVID-19. Nonetheless, various vaccine candidates have displayed a differential efficacy and need for repetitive dosing. The FDA-approved polyether ionophore veterinary antibiotic for treating coccidiosis has been repurposed for treating SARS-CoV-2 infection (as shown by both in vitro and in vivo studies) and other deadly human viruses. Based on selectivity index values, ionophores display therapeutic effects at sub-nanomolar concentrations and exhibit selective killing ability. They act on different viral targets (structural and non-structural proteins), host-cell components leading to SARS-CoV-2 inhibition, and their activity is further enhanced by Zn²⁺ supplementation. This review summarizes the anti-SARS-CoV-2 potential and molecular viral targets of selective ionophores like monensin, salinomycin, maduramicin, CP-80,219, nanchangmycin, narasin, X-206 and valinomycin. Ionophore combinations with Zn²⁺ are a new therapeutic strategy that warrants further investigation for possible human benefits.

Biochemical probing of phloem sap defensive traits in Brassica juncea-B. fruticulosa introgression lines following Lipaphis erysimi infestation

The lack of resistance to Lipaphis erysimi in cultivated Brassicas makes caused this pest highly devastating resulting in significant loss of rapeseed-mustard productivity in India. B. fruticulosa, a wild crucifer is known as an excellent source of resistance to L. erysimi. Therefore, we planned to assess defense associated biochemical alterations and molecular components of B. juncea-B. fruticulosa ILs to mustard aphid. Phenotypic assessment of ILs on the basis of aphid population per plant (APP) categorized genotypes into resistant (7.15-18.50 APP), moderately susceptible (42.29-53.33 APP) and susceptible (70.00-77.07 APP) genotypes. Mustard aphid infested minimally B. fruticulosa (0.80 APP) among tested genotypes. The maximum increase in catalase (CAT) activity was determined in B. fruticulosa and resistant ILs after 48 h (2.03 and 1.76-fold, respectively) and one week (2.98 and 1.79-fold, respectively) of mustard aphid infestation. The strong induction of CAT2 transcripts (19.25-fold) and CAT activity (5.88-fold) along with low aphid count in resistant IL, Ad4-64 (13.85 APP) suggested the pivotal role of CAT in resistance to mustard aphid. Guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) was significantly decreased following pest infestation at both infestation stages. The ascorbate content was highest in resistant IL, ADV-6RD (2.14-fold) after one week of aphid infestation. H2O2 content rapidly increased in B. juncea-B. fruticulosa derived lines after 48 h of aphid infestation. The negative and significant association between APP and CAT (- 0.56** and - 0.48*, respectively), glutathione (- 0.43* and - 0.40*, respectively), H2O2 (- 0.57** and - 0.43*, respectively) at both 48 h and one week infestation stages signified their role in deterring mustard aphid infestation. The positive and significant association between total sugars (0.33* at 7 DPI), reducing sugars (0.33* at 7 DPI), sucrose (0.36** at 48 h) and APP indicated that higher the sugars content, higher will be mustard aphid infestation in B. juncea derived ILs. The information being generated and key candidates (CAT2, ascorbate and H2O2) being identified may help in effective deployment of B. fruticulosa resistance in mustard breeding.

Assessment of indoor air quality of porous media combustion-based cookstoves

The present study analyzes the emission mitigation ability of a porous media combustion (PMC) technology-based cookstove compared to a free flame combustion (FFC) technology-based cookstove. Emission of pollutants, i.e., PM2.5, PM10, and CO, caused due to burning of fuels, namely, methanol, ethanol, kerosene, and LPG in the kitchen environment are measured. The study incorporated exhaustive real-time indoor air quality (IAQ) measurements and presented the temporal variation of measured pollutant concentrations for 2 h (morning meal duration). In addition, 24 h average concentration of the measured pollutants is also compared with the limits prescribed in WHO guidelines for domestic settings. The results emphasized that the utilization of cookstove based on PMC would help in improving the IAQ of the kitchen area by decreasing the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and CO. For 2 h duration measurements, the methanol cookstove based on PMC reduced the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and CO by 7.7%, 8.1%, and 17.2%, respectively, compared to FFC cookstove. Similarly, in the case of PMC-based LPG cookstove and kerosene cookstove, the respective values were 11.7%, 20.4%, and 41.6% and 55.3%, 62.6%, and 66.6%. Among all the tested cookstoves, PMC-based LPG cookstove achieved the lowest emission values (PM2.5: 20.6 μg/m³, PM10: 31.3 μg/m³, and CO: 1 ppm) which are lower than the prescribed WHO values (PM2.5: 25 μg/m³, PM10: 50 μg/m³, and CO: 6 ppm).

MoSe2-modified ZIF-8 novel nanocomposite for photocatalytic remediation of textile dye and antibiotic-contaminated wastewater

COVID-19-led antibiotic waste generated from hospitals and health centres may cause serious health issues and significantly impact the environment. In the coming decades, antibiotic resistance will be one of the most significant threats to global human health. Photocatalytic water remediation is an effective and promising environmental solution that can be utilized to address this issue, to convert antibiotic waste into non-toxic products by utilizing renewable and abundant solar energy. In the present study, a novel nanocomposite of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) and molybdenum diselenide (MoSe₂) was efficiently synthesized by the solvothermal method for the complete degradation of the antibiotics and textile waste from water. The morphology, crystallinity and band gap of the samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-visible spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provide the binding information of the sample. The photocatalytic activity was tested for degradation of the antibiotics (tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and metronidazole (MNZ)) used in COVID-19 treatment and textile dye (malachite green). Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy confirmed the enhanced charge separation in the MoSe₂@ZIF-8 nanocomposite with an average lifetime of 4.72 ns as compared to pristine samples. The nanocomposite showed ~ 100% removal efficiency with rate constants of 63 × 10^-3, 49 × 10^-3 and 42 × 10^-3 min^-1 for TC, MNZ and malachite green, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation of TC was carried out under different pH conditions (4, 7 and 9), and the degradation mechanism was explained on the basis of zeta potential measurements and active species trapping experiment. The by-products of the photocatalytic treatment of TC antibiotics were tested using liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS), and they were found to be non-toxic for aquatic and human life. The regeneration property of the nanocomposite was confirmed by FESEM with regeneration efficiency of 88.7% in the 4th cycle. Thus, MoSe₂@ZIF-8-based photocatalysts have potential application in water remediation, especially in making the antibiotic waste less toxic.

Quantitative probe for in-plane piezoelectric coupling in 2D materials

Piezoelectric response in two-dimensional (2D) materials has evoked immense interest in using them for various applications involving electromechanical coupling. In most of the 2D materials, piezoelectricity is coupled along the in-plane direction. Here, we propose a technique to probe the in-plane piezoelectric coupling strength in layered nanomaterials quantitively. The method involves a novel approach for in-plane field excitation in lateral Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) for 2D materials. Operating near contact resonance has enabled the measurement of the piezoelectric coupling coefficients in the sub pm/V range. Detailed methodology for the signal calibration and the background subtraction when PFM is operated near the contact resonance of the cantilever is also provided. The technique is verified by estimating the in-plane piezoelectric coupling coefficients (d11) for freely suspended MoS2 of one to five atomic layers. For 2D-MoS2 with the odd number of atomic layers, which are non-centrosymmetric, finite d11 is measured. The measurements also indicate that the coupling strength decreases with an increase in the number of layers. The techniques presented would be an effective tool to study the in-plane piezoelectricity quantitatively in various materials along with emerging 2D-materials.
