Preparation of paper scintillators and their effective use in radiation testing for α- and β- particles in radioactive liquid, solid, and gas contaminants

A paper scintillator, which is composed of an organic scintillator encapsulated in silica nanoparticles adsorbed on three types of micrometer-size silica fine powder (scintillator-silica FP), was prepared by a paper making method. The scintillator-silica FP was found to be distributed throughout the paper scintillator, as shown in its emission images. Surface photoluminescence spectra depended on the amount of scintillator-silica FP and were assigned to the radioluminescence excited upon irradiation with β-particles of 45Ca. The onset channels of the pulse height spectra of 3H, 63Ni, 14C, 45Ca, 204Tl, and 32P indicated their dependence on linear energy from 18.6 to 1711 keV using the H mode in LSC-7400 for the paper scintillator to detect their maximum β-particles energies. The paper scintillator could also detect α-particles from 211At, and its pulse height spectrum was wider than that of a liquid scintillator (LS). Radon gas in air was collected using a gas sampler with the paper scintillator, and radiation from daughter nuclides was detected for 10 days. The adsorption/absorption of tritiated water onto/into the paper scintillator after dipping, dropping, and immersing the paper scintillator into tritiated water led to the detection of β-particles under different conditions of tritiated water for determining whether the radioactivity in the solution, is high or low. The paper scintillator smeared with tritiated contaminants detected tritium without requiring an LS, which is used in a smear paper.

Collection and Preservation of Terrestrial Arthropods

Arthropods comprise an amazingly diverse group of life forms that are extensively studied in almost every field of the biological sciences. Given that the vast majority of animals are arthropods (primarily insects, arachnids, and crustaceans), knowledge of the specific methods to collect and preserves these organisms for scientific purposes can be indispensable. The application of this research can play major roles in fundamental aspects of human society, including agriculture and medicine. With something on the order of 5-10 million or more arthropod species in existence, it is a challenge for any biologist to attempt to assess and document biodiversity, but many of us find ourselves in a position to either perform this task, or assist others in doing so. It is therefore of utmost importance that proper collection and preservation techniques are used for arthropods which are then made available to scientists for diverse fields of research. The actual practical details of collection and preservation are nearly as diverse as the organisms themselves, so we can only attempt to give basic guidelines here, discussing equipment, trapping techniques, preservation methods, and documentation methods necessary for scientists inexperienced in arthropod collecting to preserve research-quality specimens.

The energetics and thermoregulation of water collecting honeybees

Honeybees need water for different purposes, to maintain the osmotic homeostasis in adults as well as to dilute stored honey and prepare liquid food for the brood. Water is also used for cooling of the hive. Foraging in endothermic insects is energy-intensive and the question arises how much energy bees invest in a resource without any metabolically usable energy. We investigated the energy demand of water collecting bees under natural conditions. The thermoregulation and energetic effort was measured simultaneously in a broad range of experimental ambient temperatures (Ta = 12-40 °C). The thorax temperature as well as the energetic turnover showed a great variability. The mean Tthorax was ranging from ~ 35.7 °C at 12 °C to nearly 42.5 °C at 40 °C. The energy turnover calculated from CO2-release was highest at a Ta of 20 °C with about 60 mW and lowest at 40 °C with about 22 mW per bee. The total costs during collection decreased from 10.4 J at 12 °C to 0.5 J at 40 °C. The energetic effort of the water collectors was comparable with that of 0.5 M sucrose foraging bees. Our investigation strongly supports the hypothesis that the bees' motivational status determines the energetic performance during foraging.

I Collect Therefore I am--Autonoetic Consciousness and Hoarding in Asperger Syndrome

A growing number of studies have highlighted impairments in the ability of individuals with autism spectrum disorders to recall specific, personally experienced material. These difficulties have been related to underlying problems with autonoetic consciousness, namely the subjective awareness of one's own existence in subjective time. The current paper describes the manifestation of these difficulties in three individuals diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. For the people described, lifelong collecting and hoarding behaviours appeared to serve the function of constituting and maintaining aspects of their sense of self, particularly the sense of continuity and agency over time. On the basis of this clinical information and previous research into self-related processes in people with autism spectrum disorders, an initial model of collecting and hoarding behaviours amongst individuals with Asperger syndrome was formulated. The implications of this formulation for both clinical practice and future research are discussed.

KEY PRACTITIONER MESSAGE

People with Asperger syndrome can have problems in developing a functional sense of self. Collecting and hoarding behaviour by people with Asperger syndrome may reflect such underlying difficulties in their sense of self rather than being symptoms of comorbid mental illness. Interventions need to take account of the function of such behaviours rather than solely regarding them as discrete pathological signs.

Do People with Hoarding Disorder Under-Report Their Symptoms?

Previous research indicates that people with hoarding sometimes under- or over-report the severity of their symptoms. This article examines the results of two separate studies that evaluate severity ratings made by participants with hoarding disorder (HD) in comparison to ratings by family members or independent evaluators. In Study 1, HD participants' ratings of the severity of the clutter in their home and their hoarding behaviors were less severe than those made by their friends or family members. This result may be accounted for by family members' rejecting attitudes towards the participant. In Study 2, HD participants appeared to under-report specific hoarding symptoms while over-reporting their overall global impression of hoarding severity. A three-pronged assessment approach is recommended in which ratings of hoarding severity are made by the HD participant, their family member, and an independent observer or clinician. Such an approach would better inform future research, and also clinical treatment.
