Environmental and nutritional Life Cycle Assessment of novel foods in meals as transformative food for the future

Sustainable diets are key for mitigating further anthropogenic climate change and meeting future health and sustainability goals globally. Given that current diets need to change significantly, novel/future foods (e.g., insect meal, cultured meat, microalgae, mycoprotein) present options for protein alternatives in future diets with lower total environmental impacts than animal source foods. Comparisons at the more concrete meal level would help consumers better understand the scale of environmental impacts of single meals and substitutability of animal sourced foods with novel foods. Our aim was to compare the environmental impacts of meals including novel/future foods with those of vegan and omnivore meals. We compiled a database on environmental impacts and nutrient composition of novel/future foods and modeled the impacts of calorically similar meals. Additionally, we applied two nutritional Life Cycle Assessment (nLCA) methods to compare the meals in terms of nutritional content and environmental impacts in one index. All meals with novel/future foods had up to 88 % less Global Warming Potential, 83 % less land use, 87 % less scarcity-weighted water use, 95 % less freshwater eutrophication, 78 % less marine eutrophication, and 92 % less terrestrial acidification impacts than similar meals with animal source foods, while still offering the same nutritional value as vegan and omnivore meals. The nLCA indices of most novel/future food meals are similar to protein-rich plant-based alternative meals and show fewer environmental impacts in terms of nutrient richness than most animal source meals. Substituting animal source foods with certain novel/future foods may provide for nutritious meals with substantial environmental benefits for sustainably transforming future food systems.

Iron-Ozone Catalytic Oxidation Reactive Filtration of Municipal Wastewater at Field Pilot and Full-Scale with High-Efficiency Pollutant Removal and Potential Negative CO2 e with Biochar

Iron-ozone catalytic oxidation (CatOx) shows promise in addressing challenging wastewater pollutants. This study investigates a CatOx reactive filtration (Fe-CatOx-RF) approach with two 0.4 L/s field pilot studies and an 18-month, 18 L/s full-scale municipal wastewater deployment. We apply ozone to leverage common sand filtration and iron metal salts used in water treatment into a next-generation technology. The process combines micropollutant and pathogen destructive removal with high-efficiency phosphorus removal and recycling as a soil amendment, clean water recovery, and the potential for carbon-negative operation with integrated biochar water treatment. A key process innovation is converting a continuously renewed iron oxide coated, moving bed sand filter into a "sacrificial iron" d-orbital catalyst bed after adding O₃ to the process stream. Results for the Fe-CatOx-RF pilot studies show >95% removal efficiencies for almost all >5×LoQ detected micropollutants, with removal rates slightly increasing with biochar addition. Phosphorus removal for the pilot site with the most P-impacted discharge was >98% with serial reactive filters. The long-term, full-scale Fe-CatOx-RF optimization trials showed single filter 90% TP removal and high-efficiency micropollutant removals for most of the compounds detected, but slightly less than the pilot site studies. TP removal decreased to a mean of 86% during the 18 L/s, 12-month continuous operation stability trial, and micropollutant removals remained similar to the optimization trial for many detected compounds but less efficient overall. A >4.4 log reduction of fecal coliforms and E. coli in a field pilot sub-study suggests the ability of this CatOx approach to address infectious disease concerns. LCA modeling suggests that integrating biochar water treatment into the Fe-CatOx-RF process for P recovery as a soil amendment makes the overall process carbon-negative at -1.21 kg CO₂ e/m³ . Results indicate positive Fe-CatOx-RF process performance and technology readiness in full-scale extended testing. Further work exploring operational variables is essential to establish site-specific water quality limitations and responsive engineering approaches for process optimization.

Comparison of GHG emissions from open field burning and anaerobic digestion of rice straw

Rice straw (RS) has been burned in open fields in many countries, which is a growing environmental concern. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of RS is one of the sustainable alternatives to open burning of RS for converting the biomass into methane, carbon dioxide, and digestate for use as agricultural manure. The present study evaluates the RS generation, use patterns, and greenhouse gas emissions from open field burning and the AD of RS. Results indicate the AD of RS offers greater environmental benefits than that by RS open field burning. As a result of the open burning of RS in India emitted 592032.52 kg of CO2 equivalents/kg per year, whereas AD of RS contributes 122.86 kg of CO2 equivalents/kg per year. If RS were burned in an open field, its Global Warming Potential would be 493,873 times greater than that of AD. By minimizing GHG emissions and creating sustainable energy from waste, sustainable development, and circular economies are achieved.

Life cycle assessment of biodiesel production from rapeseed oil: Influence of process parameters and scale

Biodiesel has the potential to mitigate the fossil fuel-related carbon emission and energy insecurity challenges. There are limited studies examining the impacts of biodiesel production scales on the environmental impacts, while such information will be valuable for guiding practical system design. This work applied the approach of life cycle assessment to evaluate the environmental impacts of biodiesel production from rapeseed oil which accounts for 80% of the European biofuel market. It was shown that the centralized large-scale and localized small-scale biodiesel production schemes have annual global warming potential (GWP) of 2.63 and 2.88 tCO₂-eq/t biodiesel, where the rapeseed agriculture stage caused more than 65% carbon emissions. Sensitivity analysis revealed a high dependence of GWP on rapeseed yields, glycerol re-utilization strategy, and nitrogen nutrient in fertilizer. An alternative scenario was proposed for the large- and small-scale systems that could reduce carbon emissions by 14.1% and 33.6%.

Economic and environmental assessment of organic waste to biomethane conversion

Biomethane and biofertilizer production by anaerobic co-digestion of organic waste serves a promising method for reducing the environmental footprint of organic waste management. This study evaluated the techno-economic feasibility and environmental impacts of organic waste to biomethane development in Glasgow, UK using net present value (NPV) analysis and life cycle assessment. Four different biogas upgrading technologies (pressurized water scrubbing, chemical scrubbing, membrane separation, and pressure swing adsorption) were compared. The membrane separation technology-based biomethane production meets 0.8% of the gas demand for Glasgow households with a conversion efficiency of 83%. The organic waste to biomethane development saved up to 264 kg CO_2-eq annually per tonne of waste treated, with an NPV ranged between £-9.0 million and £-12.0 million based on the upgrading technology. High costs for waste collection and transportation are primarily responsible for the negative NPV. Carbon taxes between £31.30 and £58.02 per tonne of CO₂ are needed for economically viable biomethane production.

Energy-environmental assessment of the UIA-OpenAgri case study as urban regeneration project through agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is strongly promoted by Agenda 2030 and peri-urban agriculture is considered strategic for agri-food sustainability. Although, innovative farming practices are being implemented, the analysis of their impacts often does not reach the required depth. Within the EU project 'UIA-OpenAgri - New Skills for new Jobs in Peri-urban Agriculture', a regeneration process of a peri-urban area in Milan (Italy) was started, through the development of an innovative food hub. 28 innovative foodchains are assessed by a Life Cycle Assessment approach based on primary data collected from the involved start-ups. Non-Renewable Cumulative Energy Demand and the Global Warming Potential indicators are assessed and coupled with the productive land indicator. To effectively support involved operators in planning sustainable agriculture practices, the results are presented with GIS maps and insights for improving economic sustainability of involved start-ups are presented. The study shows that the impacts related to the practices implemented (i.e. organic agriculture, including intercropping, agroforestry, ancient grains, etc.) decrease by an average of 55% in energy consumption and 65% on Global Warming Potential if compared to conventional ones. Then, these practices can provide a positive contribution to the Agenda 2030 goal of ensuring sustainable farm production practices.

LOW-GWP REFRIGERANTS FOR MEDIUM AND HIGH-PRESSURE APPLICATIONS

The merits of an alternative refrigerant are established based on many attributes including environmental acceptance, chemical stability in the refrigeration system, low toxicity, flammability, efficiency and volumetric capacity. In an earlier work, these criteria were used to screen a comprehensive database to search for refrigerants with low global warming potentials (GWP). The present paper summarizes the screening process and presents the performance of the 'best' replacement fluids for small and medium-sized air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration applications. In addition to considering cycle calculations based only on thermodynamic properties, a simulation model that included transport properties and optimized heat exchangers was used to assess the performance potentials of the candidate fluids. The need for this more detailed modeling approach is demonstrated for systems relying on forced-convection evaporation and condensation. The study shows that the low-GWP refrigerant options are very limited, particularly for fluids with volumetric capacities similar to those of R 410A or R-404A. The identified fluids with good COP and low toxicity are at least mildly flammable. Refrigerant blends can be used to increase flexibility in choosing tradeoffs between COP, volumetric capacity, flammability, and GWP. The probability of finding 'ideal', better-performing low-GWP fluids is minimal.

Effects of dietary protease on nitrogen emissions from broiler production: a holistic comparison using Life Cycle Assessment

BACKGROUND

The aim of the study was to quantify the effects of the use of a protease Ronozyme® ProAct in broiler feed on the environmental impacts of broiler and broiler feed production chains. This was done by using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modelling approach with data from trials using both standard soya-based broiler diets and reduced-protein diets with added protease.

RESULTS

The results for the feed production chain showed that there was a reduction in all environmental impact categories when protease was used in the diets. The biggest reduction occurred in the category of Global Warming Potential, mainly as a result of decreased carbon dioxide emissions from land use changes related to soya production. In the results for the broiler production chain, there were relatively bigger reductions in Eutrophication Potential and especially in Acidification Potential, mainly as a result of reduced feed protein content and subsequent nitrogen emissions from housing and manure management.

CONCLUSION

The use of protease in the broiler diets reduced the environmental impacts of both feed production and broiler production. The latter is mainly through reduced ammonia emissions, which has substantial benefit per se in the poultry industry.

Sustainability evaluation of Sicily's lemon and orange production: an energy, economic and environmental analysis

The island of Sicily has a long standing tradition in citrus growing. We evaluated the sustainability of orange and lemon orchards, under organic and conventional farming, using an energy, environmental and economic analysis of the whole production cycle by using a life cycle assessment approach. These orchard systems differ only in terms of a few of the inputs used and the duration of the various agricultural operations. The quantity of energy consumption in the production cycle was calculated by multiplying the quantity of inputs used by the energy conversion factors drawn from the literature. The production costs were calculated considering all internal costs, including equipment, materials, wages, and costs of working capital. The performance of the two systems (organic and conventional), was compared over a period of fifty years. The results, based on unit surface area (ha) production, prove the stronger sustainability of the organic over the conventional system, both in terms of energy consumption and environmental impact, especially for lemons. The sustainability of organic systems is mainly due to the use of environmentally friendly crop inputs (fertilizers, not use of synthetic products, etc.). In terms of production costs, the conventional management systems were more expensive, and both systems were heavily influenced by wages. In terms of kg of final product, the organic production system showed better environmental and energy performances.
