Age at first marriage in Viet Nam: patterns and determinants

"Using data from the 1991 Viet Nam Life History Survey, this article examines the patterns and determinants of age at first marriage. It shows that socio-economic and political changes during the last few decades are associated with a shift to older ages of first marriage. It identifies regional variations and discusses the significant impact of warfare on the country's age patterns of marriage. Income taxes and the timing of marital decisions

"In this paper we estimate the impact of the [U.S.] federal individual income tax on the timing of marital decisions.... Using household data from the Panel Study on Income Dynamics, we estimate various models of the probability of delaying marriage as a function of the change in tax burden caused by marriage (as well as several other variables). We find that there is a significant positive relationship between the marriage penalty in a year and the probability of delaying marriage until the following year. The magnitude of the effect, however, is small."

Marriage delays in Pakistan: analysis of selected view points

The authors explore reasons for the observed increases in marriage age in Pakistan. "Using anecdotal data from urban Pakistan, an attempt is made in this paper to analyse the perceived reasons that cause delay in marriage as well as some suggestions made by the respondents of this study to overcome the delay if necessary. In [pursuing] this objective, regional and gender variations with regard to reasons and suggestions are discussed."

Changes in age at marriage of women in rural north India

There has been a dramatic increase in age at marriage for women in a rural area of north India. Age at marriage rose from under 12 years before 1930 to about 19 years in 1988, mainly as a result of socioeconomic development and advances in education of women.
