Response Surface Optimization of Polysaccharides from Jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora [Mart.] O.Berg) Fruits: Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction, Structure Properties, and Antioxidant/Hypoglycemic Activities

Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method proves to be more effective compared to traditional extraction methods. In the present study, response surface methodology (RSM) was used to determine the optimal process parameters for extracting polysaccharides (U-MCP) from jaboticaba fruit using UAE. The optimum extraction conditions were ultrasonic time 70 min, extraction temperature 60 °C, and power 350 W. Under these conditions, the sugar content of U-MCP was 52.8 %. The molecular weights of the ultrasound-assisted extracted U-MCP ranged from 9.52×102 to 3.27×103  Da, and consisted of five monosaccharides including mannose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and arabinose. Moreover, in vitro antioxidant and hypoglycaemic assay revealed that U-MCP has prominent anti-oxidant activities (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, hydroxyl radicals and 2,2'-Azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic Acid Ammonium Salt) (ABTS) radicals scavenging activities) and hypoglycemic activities (α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition activities).

Ultrasound-assisted preparation of PdCo bimetallic nanoparticles loaded on beta zeolite for efficient catalytic hydrogen production from dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Research and development of high-performance catalysts is a key technology to realize hydrogen energy storage and transportation based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Co/beta was prepared using beta zeolite as a carrier via an electrostatic adsorption (ESA)-chemical reduction method, and it was used as the template and reducing agent to prepare bimetallic catalysts via an ultrasonic assisted galvanic replacement process (UGR). The fabricated PdCo/beta were characterized by TEM, XPS, FT-IR, XRD, H2-TPR, and H2-TPD. It was shown that the ultrafine PdCo nanoparticles (NPs) are evenly distributed on the surface of the beta zeolite. There is electron transfer between metal NPs and strong-metal-support-interaction (SMSI), which results in highly efficient catalytic dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NEC) dehydrogenation performance of PdCo bimetallic catalysts. The dehydrogenation efficiency reached 100 % in 4 h at 180 °C and 95.3 % in 6 h at 160 °C. The TOF of 146.22 min-1 is 7 times that of Pd/beta. The apparent activation energy of the reaction is 66.6 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of Pd/beta. Under the action of ultrasonic waves, the galvanic replacement reaction is accelerated, and the intermetal and metal-carrier interactions are enhanced, which improves the catalytic reaction performance.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of Sn from tinplate scraps by alkaline leaching: Novel acoustoelectric synergy effect underlying intensifying mechanism

Clean and fast extraction of tin from the surface of tinplate scraps is of great significance for the efficient utilization of waste resources. However, the dense tin layer causes the low efficiency of conventional leaching process. To improve Sn leaching efficiency, the ultrasound technique was adopted to extract Sn from tinplate scraps by alkaline leaching in this study. In the NaOH-H2O2 leaching system, metallic tin and alloyed tin in Fe-Sn alloy located on the surface of tinplate scraps can be oxidized and transferred to soluble Na2SnO3, while the iron in Fe-Sn alloy was oxidized to oxides which were chemically inert in alkaline solution. The differences in chemical solubility of Sn and Fe, and solubleness of stannate and iron oxides gave rise to the selective separation of Sn from the tinplate scraps. The effects of the leaching parameters on the Sn leaching behaviors in conventional and ultrasound-assisted leaching processes were compared. The conventional leaching temperature and time were significantly reduced during the ultrasound-assisted leaching process. Almost all of Sn can be extracted after conventional leaching at 1 mol/L NaOH, temperature of 80 ℃ and time of 60 min, however the same Sn leaching effect can be achieved by ultrasound-assisted leaching at 60 ℃ for 30 min with ultrasound power of 60% (360 W). Sn leaching kinetics based on the plate model demonstrated the reaction rate constant of the ultrasound-assisted leaching was 70% higher than that of the conventional leaching. A novel acoustoelectric synergy effect underlying intensifying mechanism by ultrasound irradiation was proposed in this study. Eventually, this work provided a rapid and clean tin extraction method from tinplate scraps via the ultrasound-assisted alkaline leaching treatment.

Emerging trends in the appliance of ultrasonic technology for valorization of agricultural residue into versatile products

The utilization of agricultural residues to obtain biocompounds of high-added value has significantly increased in the past decades. The conversion of agro-based residues into valuable products appears to be an economically efficient, environment-friendly, and protracted waste management practice. The implementation of ultrasonic technologies in the conversion of value-added goods from agricultural waste materials through pre-treatment and valorization processes has imparted many advantageous effects including rapid processing, effective process performance, minimization of processing steps, minimal dependency on harmful chemicals, and an increased yield and properties of bio-products. To further enliven the literature and inspire new research investigations, this review covers the comprehensive work including theoretical principles, processes, and potential benefits of ultrasonic treatment technologies to assist the production of bio-products which emphasize the extraction yield and the characteristic of the end-product extracted from agriculture residues. A detailed evaluation of these methods and key aspects impacting their performance as well as the features and shortcomings of each ultrasound-assisted approach is also discussed. This review also addressed some of the challenges associated with using ultrasonic irradiation and proposed several potential techniques to maximize productivity. Understanding the concept of ultrasonication technique allow the academician and industrial practitioners to explore the possibility of applying a greener and sustainable approach of biomass extraction to be translated into higher scale production of commercial products.

Feasibility analysis of intrathecal administration strategy of nusinersen based on Cobb angle in children with spinal muscular atrophy

AIM

This retro-prospective observational study described the experience in lumbar puncture procedures in children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) with and without neuromuscular scoliosis in a single center. The technical feasibility of intrathecal nusinersen administration was the main limiting factor.

STUDY DESIGN

A total of 457 technically successful intrathecal injections based on a hierarchical strategy in Cobb angle were reviewed in 81 SMA children aged 0.75-13.5 years who were referred for nusinersen injections in our hospital from October 2019 to December 2022.

RESULTS

Under local anesthesia, conventional lumbar puncture was performed on 47 patients without spinal deformity (Cobb angle of 0-10°) and 20 patients with moderate scoliosis (Cobb angle of 10-50°). Ultrasound-assisted lumbar puncture was performed on 12 patients with moderate scoliosis but lordosis. A combination of ultrasound imaging and three-dimensional CT under sedation was performed in the remaining 14 patients with severe scoliosis (Cobb angle >50°). No severe complications were found.

CONCLUSION

Cobb angle is an important basis for intrathecal administration of nusinersen. It is feasible and suitable to carry out intrathecal nusinersen injection under ultrasound combined with three-dimensional CT imaging for children with severe scoliosis.

Effects of ultrasound on the structural and functional properties of sheep bone collagen

The study evaluated the effect of an ultrasound-assisted treatment on the structural and functional properties of sheep bone collagen (SBC). The type and distribution of SBC were analyzed by proteome (shotgun) technology combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Compared with pepsin extraction, the ultrasound-assisted treatment significantly increased the collagen extraction rate by 17.4 pp (P < 0.05). The characteristic functional groups and structural integrity of collagen extracted by both methods were determined via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Circular dichroism spectra revealed that the ultrasound-assisted pretreatment reduced α-helix content by 1.6 pp, β-sheet content by 21.9 pp, and random coils content by 28.4 pp, whereas it increased β-turn content by 51.9 pp (P < 0.05), compared with pepsin extraction. Moreover, ultrasound-assisted treatment collagen had superior functional properties (e.g., solubility, water absorption, and oil absorption capacity) and foaming and emulsion properties, compared with pepsin extraction. Furthermore, the relative content of type I collagen in ultrasound-assisted extracted SBC was highest at 79.66%; only small proportions of type II, VI, X, and XI collagen were present. Peptide activity analysis showed that SBC had potential antioxidant activity, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitory activity, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity; it also had anticancer, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects.

Ultrasound-assisted green synthesis of Ru supported on LDH-CNT composites as an efficient catalyst for N-ethylcarbazole hydrogenation

N-ethylcarbazole/dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (NEC/12H-NEC) is one of the most attractive LOHCs, and it is of great significance to develop catalysts with high activity and reduce the hydrogen storage temperature. Layered double hydroxides-carbon nanotubes composites (LDH-CNT) were synthesized by a simple in-situ assembly method. Due to the introduction of CNT, a strong interaction occurred between LDH and CNT, which effectively improved the electron transfer ability of LDH-CNT. Ru/LDH-CNT catalysts were prepared via ultrasound-assisted reduction method without adding reducing agents and stabilizers. Under the cavitation effect of ultrasound, the hydroxyl groups on the surface of LDH were excited to generate hydrogen radicals (•H) with high reducibility, which successfully reduced Ru³⁺ to Ru NPs. Ru/LDH-3.9CNT-(300-1) catalyst was of 1.63 nm average Ru particle size with CNT amount of 3.9 wt% and the ultrasonic power of 300 W at 1 h, and its electron transfer resistance was less than that of Ru/LDH-(300-1). The synergy of ultrafine Ru NPs and fast electron transfer made it exhibit exceptional catalytic performance in NEC hydrogenation. Even if the reaction temperature was lowered to 80 °C, its hydrogenation performance was better than that of commercial Ru/Al₂O₃ catalyst at 120 °C. The ultrasound-assisted method is efficient, green and environmentally friendly, and the operation process is simple and economical. It is expected to be used in practical industrial production, which provides a reference for the preparation of high-activity and low-temperature hydrogen storage catalysts.

Ultrasonic assisted enhanced catalytic effect of perovskite to promote depolymerization of lignin

The search for renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuel has made lignin a promising carbon-containing resource. In this paper, LaNiO₃ perovskite catalyst supported by mesoporous carrier with specific pore structure was prepared by the pore filling of MCM-41 with citrate complex precursors of nickel and lanthanum. Then the catalysts applied to maize straw lignin depolymerization. The results of low-angle XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption, IR spectroscopy and SEM confirmed that the catalyst has been successfully manufactured. Based on the yield of phenolic monomer, low molecular weight lignin derived bio-oil and high molecular weight lignin derived bio-oil as standard, the catalyst showed best catalytic effect when the reaction temperature was 250 °C, the reaction time was 6 h, the ratio of lignin to catalyst mass was 5: 1 and with ultrasonic assist. The yield of phenolic monomer was 11.46 wt% and that of bio-oil was 68.0 wt%. In general, this method is an excellent embodiment of the principle of Lignin-first as well as an excellent strategy for the production of value-added phenolics and high-quality bio-oils from lignin. It plays an important role in promoting the high value utilization of lignin in the future.

Real-time ultrasound-guided versus anatomic landmark-based thoracic epidural placement: a prospective, randomized, superiority trial

Background

Thoracic epidural placement (TEP) using the conventional anatomic landmark-based technique is technically challenging, may require multiple attempts, and is associated with a high failure rate (12–40%). We hypothesized that real-time ultrasound guidance would be superior in the “first-pass” success rate of TEP, when compared with the conventional technique.

Methods

This prospective, randomized, superiority trial was conducted in a University hospital, and recruited 96 patients undergoing elective major abdominal or thoracic surgery and scheduled to receive a TEP for postoperative analgesia. Patients were randomly allocated to receive TEP using either the conventional technique (Gp-Conv, n = 48) or real-time ultrasound guidance (Gp-Usg, n = 48). The success of TEP was defined as eliciting loss of resistance technique and being able to insert the epidural catheter. The primary outcome variable was the “first-pass success rate” meaning the successful TEP at the first needle insertion without redirection or readvancement of the Tuohy needle. The secondary outcomes included the number of skin punctures, number of attempts, the overall success rate, TEP time, and total procedure time.

Results

The first-pass success rate of TEP was significantly higher (p = 0.002) in Gp-Usg (33/48 (68.8%); 95%CI 55.6 to 81.9) than in Gp-Conv (17/48 (35.4%); 95%CI 21.9 to 49.0). There was no statistically significant difference (p = 0.12) in the overall success rate of TEP between the 2 study groups (Gp-Usg; 48/48 (100%) vs. Gp-Conv; 44/48 (91.7%); 95%CI 83.9 to 99.5). Ultrasound guidance reduced the median number of skin punctures (Gp-Usg; 1 [1, 1] vs Gp-Conv; 2 [1, 2.2], p < 0.001) and attempts at TEP (Gp-Usg; 1 [1, 2] vs Gp-Conv; 3 [1, 7.2], p < 0.001) but the procedure took longer to perform (Gp-Usg; 15.5 [14, 20] min vs Gp-Conv; 10 [7, 14] min, p < 0.001).

Conclusions

This study indicates that real-time ultrasound guidance is superior to a conventional anatomic landmark-based technique for first-pass success during TEP although it is achieved at the expense of a marginally longer total procedure time. Future research is warranted to evaluate the role of real-time ultrasound guidance for TEP in other groups of patients.

Ultrasound-assisted preparation of chitosan/nano-silica aerogel/tea polyphenol biodegradable films: Physical and functional properties

In this study, chitosan(CS), nano-silicon aerogels(nSA) and tea polyphenols(TP) were used as film-forming materials and processed with ultrasonication to form films using the tape-casting method. The effects of ultrasonication time, temperature and frequency on the properties of CS/nSA/TP film were explored via material property testing. The results of response surface showed that the maximum tensile strength of the film was 4.036 MPa at ultrasonication time(57.97 min), temperature(37.26 °C) and frequency(30 kHz). The maximum elongation at break of the film was 279.42 % at ultrasonication time(60.88 min), temperature(39.93 °C) and frequency(30 kHz). Due to cavitation and super-mixing effects, ultrasonication may make the surface of the film smoother and easier to degrade. After ultrasonication, TPs were protected by the 3D network structure composed of CS and nSA. Ultrasonication improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film. These results show that ultrasonication is an effective method to improve the properties of films.

Cyclodextrin metal-organic framework by ultrasound-assisted rapid synthesis for caffeic acid loading and antibacterial application

Cyclodextrin metal-organic framework by ultrasound-assisted rapid synthesis for caffeic acid (CA) loading and antibacterial application (U-CD-MOF) was successfully studied and this method shortened the preparation time to a few minutes. It was found that the ultrasonic power, reaction time and temperature would affect the morphology and size of the obtained crystal. Under the optimal conditions, U-CD-MOF had a cubic structure with uniform size of 8.60 ± 1.95 μm. U-CD-MOF was used to load the antibacterial natural product CA to form the composite (CA@U-CD-MOF) and the loading rate of CA@U-CD-MOF to CA could reach 19.63 ± 2.53%, which was more than twice that of γ-CD. Various techniques were applied to characterize the synthesized crystal, including Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N₂ adsorption. In addition, antibacterial tests were performed on the obtained crystal. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of CA@U-CD-MOF for Escherichia coli O157: H7 (E. coli O157: H7) were both 25 mg·mL^-1, and the MIC for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). was 25 mg·mL^-1. The sustained release behavior of CA@U-CD-MOF to CA in ethanol fitted well to Higuchi model and the loading of CA was supported by molecular docking results. In general, U-CD-MOF was successfully achieved by ultrasound-assisted rapid synthesis and the obtained crystal was further evaluated for potential antibacterial application.

Base oil recovery from waste lubricant oil by polar solvent extraction intensified by ultrasound

This paper proposes a greener approach to the intensification of base oil recovery for truck engines (32,500 km of use) using ethanol, propan-2-ol, 2-methylpropan-1-ol, and butan-1-ol as solvents for the extraction of base oil, combining mechanical stirring (220 rpm) and ultrasound (25 °C, 24 kHz, and 400 W). The results indicated that the recovery yields of the base oil, using the mechanical stirring and ultrasound (MS-US) system, for ethanol, propan-2-ol, 2-methylpropan-1-ol, and butan-1-ol were approximately 3.1, 25.6, 71.6, and 85.5%, respectively. By contrast, the recovery yields using only mechanical stirring were 8.8, 28.9, 58.9, and 76.1%, respectively. The system with pre-extraction could effectively remove Ca (85.3-93.0%), Mg (67.2-82.9%), Na (31.7-62.5%), and Zn (0.0-71.7%). Finally, the results showed a reduction of almost 100% for the concentrations of Al, Cr, Fe, and Mo in the pre-extraction system. The mechanical stirring (5 min) and ultrasound (5 min) system were able to intensify the extraction process using environmentally friendly solvents.

In situ ultrasound-assisted ion exchange synthesis of sphere-like AgClxBr1-x composites with enhanced photocatalytic activity and stability

AgCl_xBr_1-x composites with different halogen molar ratios (Cl/Br) were prepared by a facile ultrasound-assisted ion-exchange method. The formation of close contact between AgCl and AgBr facilitated the transportation of photoexcited charge carriers and contributed to the enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of different kinds of antibiotics. The AgCl_xBr_1-x composites had a sphere-like morphology and tunable band gaps from 2.95 to 2.57 eV depending on Cl/Br mole ratios. Besides, the AgCl_xBr_1-x composite was optimized by varying halogen mole ratios (Cl/Br) to achieve the highest photocatalytic activity. Results indicated that AgCl_0.75Br_0.25 showed the best photocatalytic degradation performance, which was about 2.36 and 2.78 times that of the single AgCl towards ciprofloxacin (CIP) and metronidazole (MNZ) degradation, respectively. Meanwhile, a possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism was discussed, and results indicated that the holes (h⁺) and •OH were the dominant active species in the AgCl_0.75Br_0.25 system.

A novel approach for fast and simple determination pyrrolizidine alkaloids in herbs by ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase extraction method coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are secondary plant metabolites witch can contaminate food, especially herbs. Due to the fact that alkaloids have a strong adverse effect on human health, it is necessary to use sensitive and selective detection methods. In present study a modified method based on LC-MS/MS was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of thirty pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their corresponding N-oxides (PANOs) in herbs samples. Sample extraction was based on ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase extraction and clean-up using graphene. Method validation showed that the proposed method hold good recoveries (61-128 %) for PAs/PANOs with RSD <15 %. Limits of quantification has been set at 1 μg kg^-1 level for all targeted alkaloids. The optimized method yielded a small matrix effect (-20-20 %) for most PAs/PANOs. The uncertainty associated with the analytical method was not higher than 38 %. The method is operationally simple, time-saving, and can be applied to the analysis of real herb samples.

Ultrasound-assisted desolventizing of fragrant oil from red pepper seed by subcritical propane extraction

In the present study, ultrasound was used to remove the residual solvent from the fragrant oil of red pepper seed obtained by subcritical propane extraction. The physical and chemical characteristics, particularly the volatile flavor compounds present of the oil before and after ultrasound-assisted desolventizing were comprehensively analyzed to determine the effect of the desolventizing process on product quality. The results showed that the maximum loss of residual solvent was achieved at a temperature of 90 °C maintained for 70 min with ultrasound applied during the entire process. After this treatment only a small amount of solvent (2.3% based on the total residual solvent originally present) remained in the oil. Although it was hypothesized that ultrasound treatment could result in the loss of volatile components, the analytical results showed no obvious reduction in the components associated with the typical aroma of the oil. After ultrasonic treatment, the oil also had good oxidation stability and quality. Additionally, after ultrasonic desolventizing, the oil samples were more suitable for cooking because they could more effectively minimize oxidation. Thus, these results demonstrate that this new ultrasonic technique is an effective and efficient method for removing the solvent remaining in fragrant oil after subcritical propane extraction.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction optimization and validation of ultra-performance liquid chromatographic method for the quantification of miquelianin in Cuphea glutinosa leaves

Cuphea glutinosa is a medicinal species abundant in South of Brazil, known because of its flavonoids, which have pharmacological properties as antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, diuretic, and antimicrobial. The present study aimed to optimize the extraction and validate an ultra-performance liquid chromatographic method coupled to a photodiode array detector (UPLC-PDA) method for the quantification of a chemical marker miquelianin in C. glutinosa leaves. The optimum conditions for the extraction of miquelianin from leaves of C. glutinosa were determined using a fractional factorial design (FFD) and a central composite design (CCD). An UPLC-PDA method was validated, following the ICH guidelines and RDC 166/2017 of ANVISA (Brazil). The extraction-optimization methodology was obtained with the following parameters: plant:solvent 1:60 (w/v), percentage solvent 38% ethanol, 60 min time, five extractions and particle size ≤ 180 μm. The validation parameters of the quantification method were satisfactory. The results revealed a method with excellent selectivity, linearity, precision (repeatability and intermediate precision were below 2.18 and 1.40%, respectively) and accuracy (mean recovery 90.6%). The average content of miquelianin was 1.03%. Briefly, the optimization of the extractive method in the leaves of C. glutinosa increased the concentration of miquelianin in the crude extract and the method was validated according to the current legislation.

Comparative evaluation of maceration, microwave and ultrasonic-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from propolis

The aim of this study was to compare different techniques in order to achieve a high extraction of phenolic compounds from propolis. For this purpose, it was investigated the use of double maceration (24 h at room temperature with continuous agitation at 250 rpm), double microwave treatments (1 min at 140 W) and double ultrasound-assisted extraction (15 min at 20 kHz) using 70% ethanol. The extraction efficiency was measured based on extraction yield, total phenolic content, flavones and flavonol content, and flavanone and dihydroflavonol content. The ultrasonic extraction had an extraction yield higher than microwave extraction and maceration. The yield of the propolis ranged between samples and between the years of propolis harvesting. Of the twelve quantified phenolic compounds, p-coumaric acid was the most abundant (271.65 mg/g propolis).

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of highly functionalized benzo[1,3]thiazine via Cu-catalyzed intramolecular CH activation reaction from isocyanides, aniline-benzoyl(acetyl) isothiocyanate adduct

A facile sonochemical route for the synthesis of benzo[1,3]thiazine derivatives via a one pot, multicomponent, intramolecular CH activation reaction from isocyanides, aniline and benzoyl (acetyl) isothiocyanate adduct catalyzed by copper (I) iodide in acetone at 30 °C have been reported. The advantages of the described method include using simple and readily available starting materials and performing under mild copper-catalytic reaction conditions and also obtaining pure product with high yield without applying column chromatography. Furthermore, using the sonochemical methodology as an efficient method led to reduce the reaction times.

Validity and Reliability of Mini-Invasive Surgery Assisted by Ultrasound in Achilles Tendon Rupture

Introduction:

The surgical treatment for Achilles tendon rupture has become very popular in the last years, because of the good outcomes and the low re-rupture rate.

Aim:

The aim of this study is to compare the results between open surgery and percutaneous ultrasound-assisted surgery.

Methods:

All patients who underwent an Achilles tendon surgical repair in the last 3 years were included, resulting in a total of 56 patients (40 M and 16 F) with an average age of 53 years. Of these patients, 36 were treated with an open suture, while 20 with a mini invasive ultrasound assisted suture. At a minimum follow-up of one year, patients were evaluated echografically, using both the Achilles Tendon Rupture Total score (ATRS) and the McComis score, and performing the ultrasounds bilaterally to assess both the structure and the diameter of tendons.

Results:

Both groups of patients showed an average ATRS score >80. The McComis score was 54.18 vs. 56.25 (p>0.05). Plantar flexion and dorsal flexion work were not similar (p>0.05). On average, the calf circumference of the operated side was decreased compared to the healthy side between the groups (p>0.05). The thickness of the operated tendons evaluated with ultrasound measurement compared to the average tendon, (p <0.05).

Conclusion:

The ultrasound-assisted tenorrhaphy is a reliable treatment with good clinical and functional outcomes; anyway, the percutaneous technique and the open surgery show similar results.

Efficient cleaning extraction of silver from spent symbiosis lead-zinc mine assisted by ultrasound in sodium thiosulfate system

The process to fast recovery of silver from the spent symbiosis lead-zinc mine enhanced by ultrasound has been developed. A system composed of thiosulfate and the spent symbiosis lead-zinc mine under ultrasound radiation is researched and compared with regular methods to prove the superiority of ultrasound enhanced leaching. Oxygen is not provided by the usual way but by the cavitation of ultrasound, and the effect of ultrasonic enhanced leaching is more obvious than oxygen enhanced leaching effect. We are more authoritative by combining some valuable literature after conducting systematic experiments. The process mechanism was analyzed by fire assaying, XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. The optimal conditions were found out through single factor experiments: stirring rate of 300 rpm, thiosulfate concentration of 75 g/L, leaching temperature of 303 K, PH of 5, leaching time of 2 h and the ultrasound power of 100 W. And the leaching rate is 77.34% under the best conditions. When the ultrasonic experiment has the same parameters as the normal, the leaching rate at five minutes under ultrasonic conditions was 73.88%, while the leaching rate was only 72.51% at two hours under normal conditions. The apparent activation energy under conventional and ultrasonic conditions is 12.47 kJ/mol and 12.35 kJ/mol, respectively, and it is proved that both are controlled by diffusion.

Ultrasound-promoted direct functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in water via Diels-Alder "click chemistry"

A facile and environmentally friendly strategy for grafting polymers onto the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was demonstrated by Diels-Alder "click chemistry". Firstly, the copolymers of poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PSM) were prepared by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and subsequently functionalized with furfuryl amine to introduce anchoring groups. The copolymers were then grafted on CNTs via the Diels-Alder reaction in water through a conventional heating-stirring route and ultrasound-assisted method. The obtained nanocomposite materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated that the reaction rate under ultrasound irradiation was accelerated about 12 times than the one under the conventional heating-stirring condition without losing the grafting efficiency. The direct functionalization of CNTs formed a stably dispersed solution in water, promising a green and effective method for industrial process.

Preparation of waterborne dispersions of epoxy resin by ultrasonic-assisted supercritical CO2 nanoemulsification technique

Waterborne nanoemulsion of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A type epoxy resin (DGEBA) with droplet size of around 124nm was prepared by using an ultrasonic-assisted supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) technique in an autoclave reactor at a low temperature (32°C). A view cell positioned in-line with the ultrasonic probe allowed observation of the emulsification process. From the image analysis and droplet size measurement, the influence mechanisms of the ultrasonic power, the degree of mixing of scCO₂ with DGEBA, the adding amount of emulsifier, and the system pressure on emulsification process and emulsion droplet size were investigated. In the emulsification process, scCO₂ penetrated into the mixture and absorbed on the DGEBA molecular. The interactions between CO₂ and the functional groups of DGEBA reduced the chain-chain interactions of polymer segments and therefore efficiently reduced the viscosity of DGEBA at a low temperature. Meantime, the cavitation and acoustic streaming of ultrasound provided a shear force for the nanoemulsification and a disturbance force for the homogeneity of the emulsion. Therefore, the combination of scCO₂ and ultrasonication made it possible to prepare a long-term stable nanoemulsion under a low temperature. This ultrasonic-assisted scCO₂ emulsification method provides an efficient and solvent-free process for the preparation of waterborne nanoemulsions of, for example, some heat-sensitive and water-insoluble active substances at low temperature.

Ultra fast ultrasound-assisted decopperization from copper anode slime

An ultra fast decopperization method from the anode slime has been developed based on the ultrasound-assisted leaching. The effects of parameters such as ultrasound power, leaching time, sulfuric acid concentration and liquid/solid ratio were investigated. Under optimum conditions, the concentration of Cu in residue was only 2.64%. The removal efficiency increases considerably and the decopperization time was significantly shortened comparing with conventional method (>10%, 24h). Se and Te have not been detected in lixivium, indicating the selective leaching of Cu. In addition, the mineralogical characteristics of the untreated anode slime and the residues after ultrasound-assisted decopperization are investigated. The results revealed that the increasing of decopperization efficiency was attributed to the change of the phase composition and the morphology and size of samples during ultrasound-assisted decopperization.

Optimization and modeling of preconcentration and determination of dyes based on ultrasound assisted-dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with derivative spectrophotometry

Present study is based on describing an ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with derivative spectrophotometry (UAS-DLLME-UV-vis) as useful technique for selective determination of crystal violet (CV) and azure b (Az-B). The significant factors like pH, extractor volume, disperser value and extraction time contribution and their numerical coefficient in quadratic model were calculated according to central composite design (CCD). According to desirability function (DF) as good criterion the best experimental conditions was adjusted and selected at pH of 7.0, 170μL of chloroform, 800μL of ethanol that strongly mixed with the aqueous phase via 4min sonication. Additionally, under study system was modeled by trained artificial neural networks (ANNs) as fitness function with acceptable error of MSE 2.97×10^-06 and 1.15×10^-05 with R²: 0.9999 and 0.9997 for CV and Az-B, respectively. The optimum conditions by using genetic algorithm (GA) method was pH of 6.3, 160μL of chloroform, 740μL of ethanol and 4.5min sonication. Under above specified and optimize conditions, the predicted extraction percentage were 99.80 and 102.20% for CV and Az-B, respectively. The present UAS-DLLME-UV-vis procedure has minimum interference from other substances assign to the matrix, which candidate this method as good alternative to quantify under study dyes content with recoveries in the range of 86-100% for dyes. The detection limits were 2.043ngmL^-1 and 1.72ngmL^-1, and limits of quantitation were 6.81ngmL^-1 and 5.727ngmL^-1 for CV and Az-B, respectively. The proposed methodology was successfully applied for quantification of under study analytes at different media.

Optimization of ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid-phase microextraction based on nanoparticles followed by spectrophotometry for the simultaneous determination of dyes using experimental design

A simple, low cost and ultrasensitive method for the simultaneous preconcentration and determination of trace amount of auramine-O and malachite green in aqueous media following accumulation on novel and lower toxicity nanomaterials by ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase micro-extraction (UA-DSPME) procedure combined with spectrophotometric has been described. The Mn doped ZnS nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon were characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses and subsequently were used as green and efficient material for dyes accumulation. Contribution of experimental variables such as ultrasonic time, ultrasonic temperature, adsorbent mass, vortex time, ionic strength, pH and elution volume were optimized through experimental design, and while the preconcentrated analytes were efficiently eluted by acetone. Preliminary Plackett-Burman design was applied for selection of most significant factors and giving useful information about their main and interaction part of significant variables like ultrasonic time, adsorbent mass, elution volume and pH were obtained by central composite design combined with response surface analysis and optimum experimental conditions was set at pH of 8.0, 1.2mg of adsorbent, 150μL eluent and 3.7min sonication. Under optimized conditions, the average recoveries (five replicates) for two dyes (spiked at 500.0ngmL(-1)) changes in the range of 92.80-97.70% with acceptable RSD% less than 4.0% over a linear range of 3.0-5000.0ngmL(-1) for the AO and MG in water samples with regression coefficients (R(2)) of 0.9975 and 0.9977, respectively. Acceptable limits of detection of 0.91 and 0.61ngmL(-1) for AO and MG, respectively and high accuracy and repeatability are unique advantages of present method to improve the figures of merit for their accurate determination at trace level in complicated materials.

Ultrasound-enhanced chemiluminescence tomography in biological tissue

This paper reports ultrasound-assisted optical imaging of chemiluminescent probes in biological tissue. A focused low power ultrasound sonochemically enhances a peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence (CL) that involves indocyanine green (ICG) as luminescent pigments. By scanning the focus, it produces tomographic images of CL in scattering media. The authors demonstrate imaging using a slab of porcine muscle measuring 50 × 50 × 75 mm, in which a capsuled CL reagent is embedded at 25 mm depth. Spatial resolution of imaging and concentration characteristics of CL reagents to enhanced CL intensity are also studied to evaluate the potential for use in bio-imaging applications with exploring the CL enhancement mechanisms. CL enhancement ratio, defined as the ratio of ultrasonically enhanced CL intensity to the base intensity without ultrasound irradiation, was found to be constant even in varying ICG and oxidizer concentrations, implying to be applicable for quantitative determination of these molecules.

Ultrasound assisted one-pot synthesis of benzo-fused indole-4, 9-dinones from 1,4-naphthoquinone and α-aminoacetals

A one-pot synthesis of benzo[f]indole-4,9-diones from 1,4-naphthoquinone with α-aminoacetals has been developed. This method provides a straightforward synthesis of benzo[f]indole-4,9-diones via intramolecular nucleophilic attack of aminoquinones to aldehydes under mild reaction conditions. The detailed mechanism was also investigated.

Surface modification of chitin using ultrasound-assisted and supercritical CO2 technologies for cobalt adsorption

Ultrasound-assisted (UA) and supercritical CO2 technologies (SCO2) were used to modify the chitin surface and, improve its adsorption characteristics regarding to cobalt. Chitin, before and after the treatments, was characterized by N2 adsorption isotherms (BET), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Unmodified and surface modified chitins were used as adsorbents to remove cobalt from aqueous solutions. The adsorption study was performed by equilibrium isotherms and kinetic curves. The chitin particle characteristics, such as, surface area, pore volume and porosity were improved by the UA and SCO2 treatments. The crystallinity index decreased after the UA and SCO2 treatments, and also, intense surface modifications were observed. Langmuir and Freundlich models were adequate to represent the adsorption equilibrium. The maximum adsorption capacities were 50.03, 83.94 and 63.08 mg g(-1) for unmodified chitin, UA surface modified chitin and SCO2 surface modified chitin. The adsorption kinetic curves were well represented by the pseudo-second order model. UA and SCO2 technologies are alternatives to modify the chitin surface and improve its adsorption characteristics.
