Interlayer and Intralayer Excitons in AlN/WS2 Heterostructure

The study of intra and interlayer excitons in 2D semiconducting vdW heterostructures is a very hot topic not only from a fundamental but also an applicative point of view. Due to their strong light-matter interaction, Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMD) and group-III nitrides are particularly attractive in the field of opto-electronic applications such as photo-catalytic and photo-voltaic ultra-thin and flexible devices. Using first-principles ground and excited-state simulations, we investigate here the electronic and excitonic properties of a representative nitride/TMD heterobilayer, the AlN/WS2. We demonstrate that the band alignment is of type I, and low energy intralayer excitons are similar to those of a pristine WS2 monolayer. Further, we disentangle the role of strain and AlN dielectric screening on the electronic and optical gaps. These results, although they do not favor the possible use of AlN/WS2 in photo-catalysis, as envisaged in the previous literature, can boost the recently started experimental studies of 2D hexagonal aluminum nitride as a good low screening substrate for TMD-based electronic and opto-electronic devices. Importantly, our work shows how the inclusion of both spin-orbit and many-body interactions is compulsory for the correct prediction of the electronic and optical properties of TMD/nitride heterobilayers.

First-Principles Prediction of New 2D p-SiPN: A Wide Bandgap Semiconductor

Pentagonal two-dimensional ternary sheets are an emerging class of materials because of their novel characteristic and wide range of applications. In this work, we use first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to identify a new pentagonal SiPN, p-SiPN, which is geometrically, thermodynamically, dynamically, and mechanically stable, and has promising experimental potential. The new p-SiPN shows an indirect bandgap semiconducting behavior that is highly tunable with applied equ-biaxial strain. It is mechanically isotropic, along the x-y in-plane direction, and is a soft material possessing high elasticity and ultimate strain. In addition, its exceptional anisotropic optical response with strong UV light absorbance, and small reflectivity and electron energy loss make it a potential material for optoelectronics and nanomechanics.

Predicting material properties by integrating high-throughput experiments, high-throughput ab-initio calculations, and machine learning

High-throughput experiments (HTEs) have been powerful tools to obtain many materials data. However, HTEs often require expensive equipment. Although high-throughput ab-initio calculation (HTC) has the potential to make materials big data easier to collect, HTC does not represent the actual materials data obtained by HTEs in many cases. Here we propose using a combination of simple HTEs, HTC, and machine learning to predict material properties. We demonstrate that our method enables accurate and rapid prediction of the Kerr rotation mapping of an Fe_xCo_yNi_1-x-y composition spread alloy. Our method has the potential to quickly predict the properties of many materials without a difficult and expensive HTE and thereby accelerate materials development.

Ligand-Modified Boron-Doped Diamond Surface: DFT Insights into the Electronic Properties of Biofunctionalization

With the increasing power of computation systems, theoretical calculations provide a means for quick determination of material properties, laying out a research plan, and lowering material development costs. One of the most common is Density Functional Theory (DFT), which allows us to simulate the structure of chemical molecules or crystals and their interaction. In developing a new generation of biosensors, understanding the nature of functional linkers, antibodies, and ligands become essential. In this study, we used DFT to model a bulk boron-doped diamond slab, modified by a functional linker and a surrogate proteins ligand. DTF calculations enable the prediction of electronic transport properties in an electrochemical sensor setup, composed of a boron-doped diamond electrode functionalized by 4-amino benzoic acids and a target surrogated protein-ligand for influenza. Electron conduction pathways and other signatures associated with the detection and measurement of the target analyte are revealed.

Anomalous Lattice Dynamics in AgC4N3: Insights From Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Density Functional Calculations

We have performed temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurements to study the anharmonicity of phonon spectra of AgC4N3. The analysis and interpretation of the experimental spectra is done using ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations. The calculated phonon spectrum over the entire Brillouin zone is used to derive linear thermal expansion coefficients. The effect of van der Waals interaction on structure stability has been investigated using advanced density functional methods. The calculated isothermal equation of states implies a negative linear compressibility along the c-axis of the crystal, which also leads to a negative thermal expansion along this direction. The role of elastic properties inducing the observed anomalous lattice behavior is discussed.

Phonons and Thermal Expansion Behavior of NiSi and NiGe

We have carried out first principles calculations of the vibrational and thermodynamic behavior in NiSi and isostructural compound NiGe. Phonon density of states has also been measured in NiSi using inelastic neutron scattering techniques. We find that the vibrational spectra of the two compounds are very different, due to the difference in the size and mass of Si and Ge. Interesting anomalous thermal behavior of NiSi due to anharmonic phonons is brought out well in our calculations, particularly the negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the b-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell. Large difference in thermal expansion behavior of NiSi and NiGe is very well reproduced by the calculations. Additionally, calculations enable to identify the phonon modes which lend major contribution to the negative thermal expansion behavior in NiSi, and reasons for negligible NTE in NiGe. Such typical representative modes at the zone-boundary along b-axis involve transverse vibrations of Si/Ge along c-axis. PACS numbers: 78.70.Nx, 63.20.-e, 65.40.-b.

Determination of the electronic energy levels of colloidal nanocrystals using field-effect transistors and Ab-initio calculations

Colloidal nanocrystals electronic energy levels are determined by strong size-dependent quantum confinement. Understanding the configuration of the energy levels of nanocrystal superlattices is vital in order to use them in heterostructures with other materials. A powerful method is reported to determine the energy levels of PbS nanocrystal assemblies by combining the utilization of electric-double-layer-gated transistors and advanced ab-initio theory.

Three-dimensional (3D) structure prediction of the American and African oil-palms β-ketoacyl-[ACP] synthase-II protein by comparative modelling

BACKGROUND

The fatty-acid profile of the vegetable oils determines its properties and nutritional value. Palm-oil obtained from the African oil-palm [Elaeis guineensis Jacq. (Tenera)] contains 44% palmitic acid (C16:0), but, palm-oil obtained from the American oilpalm [Elaeis oleifera] contains only 25% C16:0. In part, the b-ketoacyl-[ACP] synthase II (KASII) [EC: 2.3.1.179] protein is responsible for the high level of C16:0 in palm-oil derived from the African oil-palm. To understand more about E. guineensis KASII (EgKASII) and E. oleifera KASII (EoKASII) proteins, it is essential to know its structures. Hence, this study was undertaken.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to predict three-dimensional (3D) structure of EgKASII and EoKASII proteins using molecular modelling tools.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The amino-acid sequences for KASII proteins were retrieved from the protein database of National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), USA. The 3D structures were predicted for both proteins using homology modelling and ab-initio technique approach of protein structure prediction. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to refine the predicted structures. The predicted structure models were evaluated and root mean square deviation (RMSD) and root mean square fluctuation (RMSF) values were calculated.

RESULTS

The homology modelling showed that EgKASII and EoKASII proteins are 78% and 74% similar with Streptococcus pneumonia KASII and Brucella melitensis KASII, respectively. The EgKASII and EoKASII structures predicted by using ab-initio technique approach shows 6% and 9% deviation to its structures predicted by homology modelling, respectively. The structure refinement and validation confirmed that the predicted structures are accurate.

CONCLUSION

The 3D structures for EgKASII and EoKASII proteins were predicted. However, further research is essential to understand the interaction of EgKASII and EoKASII proteins with its substrates.

The Role Played by Computation in Understanding Hard Materials

In the last decade, computation has played a valuable role in the understanding of materials. Hard materials, in particular, are only part of the application. Although materials involving B, C, N or O remain the most valued atomic component of hard materials, with diamond retaining its distinct superiority as the hardest, other materials involving a wide variety of metals are proving important. In the present work the importance of both ab-initio approaches and molecular dynamics aspects will be discussed with application to quite different systems. On one hand, ab-initio methods are applied to lightweight systems and advanced nitrides. Following, the use of molecular dynamics will be considered with application to strong metals that are used for high temperature applications.
