Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe long-term effects on activity, participation, and quality of life (i) at different post-injury starting time points of attention training and (ii) of two different types of rehabilitation with attention training in patients after stroke or traumatic brain injury; and to describe their functioning level. DESIGN 2 years after rehabilitation intervention, comparisons were made in one cohort receiving attention training subacute (< 4 months) or post-acute (4-12 months) and in one cohort with two different training methods, a process-based and an activity-based method respectively. PATIENTS 100 patients were recruited from our earlier RCT study. They had mild to moderate stroke or traumatic brain injury with relatively limited symptomatology, and all had moderate to severe attention impairment. METHODS A questionnaire-based interview: EuroQol 5 dimensions, Occupational Gaps Questionnaire, Work Ability Index, self-assessed work status, self-reported employment conditions, sick leave, and experienced cognitive limitations in work performance. RESULTS An advantage for patients receiving subacute attention training regarding daily activities, work ability and returning to work. CONCLUSION The results indicate that subacute rehabilitation with attention training (< 4 months) is preferable compared to post-acute intervention (4-12 months). There were only minor differences between the training methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hippotherapy (HPOT) is a physical therapy (PT) treatment tool using equine movement to improve mobility for children with movement impairments. Although research suggests HPOT improves body structure and function, there is limited evidence regarding its impact on activity and participation outcomes in a clinical setting. The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT) may be useful in HPOT settings to highlight changes in activity and participation. PURPOSE 1) Evaluate the PEDI-CAT's sensitivity to changes in activity and participation among children receiving PT using HPOT; 2) determine feasibility of administering the PEDI-CAT in a HPOT setting; and 3) examine how PEDI-CAT scores influence clinical decision-making. METHODS Participants (N = 34) were children who attended weekly PT using HPOT for 6 months. The PEDI-CAT was completed for all participants by a parent or caregiver at initial treatment (T1) and 6 months later (T2). A linear mixed effects model was used to evaluate changes in scores over time. Team meetings occurred monthly to discuss how PEDI-CAT scores impacted treatment. RESULTS There were significant improvements across 3 PEDI-CAT domains between T1 and T2 for all children with small effect sizes and nonsignificant changes noted within two diagnostic subgroups with small-to-medium effect sizes. The PEDI-CAT was completed by all participants without interrupting treatment flow. PEDI-CAT score reports enriched therapist-client conversations increasing shared decision-making. CONCLUSION PTs who treat children using HPOT may feasibly use the PEDI-CAT to assess changes in activity level outcomes and to assist clinical decision-making.

Abstract
The Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire was developed for generic use in the assessment of participation and activity levels. However, it is not available in Chinese and has not been tested in the stroke population. The Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire was translated into Chinese and culturally adapted. Its psychometric properties were examined in 100 people with stroke. The participation and activity levels of people with stroke and healthy people were also compared. Content validity and internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.86-0.91) were excellent. The test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.91-0.94) was also satisfactory. The standard error of the measurement was 4.10-5.31, and the minimal detectable change was 11.37-14.71. Convergent and divergent validity were supported by hypothesis testing. The instrument had a five-factor structure without a ceiling effect. Its routine activity and social engagement scores discriminated people with stroke from healthy people. In conclusion, the Chinese version of the Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire is reliable and valid for assessing participation and activity levels in the stroke population.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Fear of Falling Avoidance Behavior Questionnaire (FFABQ) into Brazilian-Portuguese (FFABQ-B), and to examine its reliability and validity in Brazilian older adults. The FFABQ-B was translated and tested in 10 Brazilian older adults. We assessed 52 community-dwellers, 68.7 (±6.2) years, using the FFABQ-B, BERG Balance Scale, Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale, Falls Efficacy Scale, 6-Minute Walk Test, Timed Up and Go test, and activity monitor. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and floor and ceiling effects were analyzed. The FFABQ-B had adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .90) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = .81; 95% confidence interval [.68, .90]). The FFABQ-B was associated with 6-Minute Walk Test, Timed Up and Go, BERG Balance Scale, physical activity time (p < .05), Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale, and Falls Efficacy Scale (p < .001). The FFABQ-B is both reliable and valid to assess avoidance behavior in activities and participation due to fear of falling in Brazilian community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Background: This study attempts to determine whether a program focused on improving literacy in daily living is effective in preventing physical frailty, and to compare standard treatments for physical frailty. Methods: This study was designed as a pilot intervention study involving two groups. Twenty-five older adults aged 65 to 85 in Ward A, Tokyo, were randomly assigned to the literacy group or the exercise group on a regional basis and were given a 60- to 90-minute program twice a month, eight times over four months. The literacy group mainly used video materials to monitor learning, and the exercise group used a multifactor exercise program. Results: The LSI-Z, GAS-L, Maximum 5 m walking time, and TUG tests showed the main effects before and after the intervention in both groups (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). The WHOQOL26, Maximum 5 m walking time, and TUG tests also showed the main effects across both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both programs, when implemented independently, showed specific effects on subjective well-being, occupational performance, and physical fitness. However, QOL and physical fitness were significantly higher in the exercise group than in the literacy group. These results should be considered with caution because of the limited sample size of this pilot study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FHSD) is a debilitating inherited muscle disease for which various therapeutic strategies are being investigated. Thus far, little attention has been given in FSHD to the development of scientifically sound outcome measures fulfilling regulatory authority requirements. The aim of this study was to design a patient-reported Rasch-built interval scale on activity and participation for FSHD. METHODS A pre-phase FSHD-Rasch-built overall disability scale (pre-FSHD-RODS; consisting of 159 activity/participation items), based on the World Health Organization international classification of disease-related functional consequences was completed by 762 FSHD patients (Netherlands: n = 171; UK: n = 287; United States: n = 221; France: n = 52; Australia: n = 32). A proportion of the patient cohort completed it twice (n = 230; interval 2-4 weeks; reliability studies). The pre-FSHD-RODS was subjected to Rasch analyses to create a model fulfilling its requirements. Validity studies were performed through correlation with the motor function measure. RESULTS The pre-FSHD-RODS did not meet the Rasch model expectations. Based on determinants such as misfit statistics and misfit residuals, differential item functioning, and local dependency, we systematically removed items until a final 38-inquiry (originating from 32 items; six items split) FSHD-RODS was constructed achieving Rasch model expectations. Adequate test-retest reliability and (cross-cultural and external) validity scores were obtained. CONCLUSIONS The FSHD-RODS is a disease-specific interval measure suitable for detecting activity and participation restrictions in patients with FSHD with good item/person reliability and validity scores. The use of this scale is recommended in the near future, to determine the functional deterioration slope in FSHD per year as a preparation for the upcoming clinical intervention trials in FSHD.

Abstract
People with disabilities display less use of preventive health services, such as health examinations, flu vaccinations, Pap smears and breast screening, but evidence has shown that preventive health services can detect or even prevent serious diseases and medical problems. Therefore, identifying the factors associated with the use of preventive health services is important for people with disabilities. This study examined the use of preventive health services by people with disabilities and identified other associated factors for people with disabilities. The research used social demographics and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) 12 items to measure activity and participation (AP) and other factors; there were 742 people with disabilities recruited with stratified proportional sampling. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews. The findings revealed that the common types of preventive services accessed by people with disabilities were health examinations and flu vaccinations; most of them had only used one preventive health service in the past year. The factors of having caregivers of spouses (OR = 1.74), perceived good health (OR = 1.26), and less limitation of AP (OR = 0.99) were significantly associated with the use of preventive services (p < 0.01). The study found a significant association between having children as caregivers and the non-use of Pap smears and breast screening services among women, providing valuable evidence for the distribution of the use of preventive health services for people with disabilities. Furthermore, the study highlighted the present status of disparities in the use of preventive services for people with disabilities and should encourage a boost in the adjustment of the medical environment and service resource allocation by the Taiwanese government for people with disabilities.

Abstract
Background: Functional surgery is an effective approach in the treatment of the rigid equinovarus foot deformity (EVFD). This must be associated with early rehabilitation treatments (ERTs) to prevent muscle rearrangements due to immobilization. Objectives: To assess the effects of EVFD surgical correction in adult stroke patients, when assessed according to the ICF domains. Methods: Variables from 24 adult chronic stroke survivors with EVFD surgical correction followed by ERT, age 55 ± 13 years, affected side 12L/12R, time from lesion 5 ± 4 years were analyzed. Body function domain: pain (NPRS), walking speed, clinical global impression of change (cGIC). Activity domain: Rivermead Mobility Index (RMI), FAC, and 6 min walking test (6MWT). Participation domain: Walking Handicap Scale (WHS). Patients were assessed before (T0), one (T1), three (T2) and twelve (T3) months after surgery by a single assessor. Results: All variables but the 6MWT significantly improved (Wilcoxon test, p < .05) at T1 or T2 and this remained until the 12-months mark. Since T1, all patients reached and maintained a supervised independent walking (FAC≥3) and all those wearing an AFO stopped using it. The median cGCI was "much improved" at T1, with a "further minimal improvement" at T3. This was not associated with the improvement measured by both FAC, and WHS (Chi-square test, p = .20 and p = .36, respectively). Conclusions: Functional surgery combined with ERT is effective in improving the patients' condition according to all ICF domains. Both subjective and objective assessments have to be used when assessing these patients.

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify determinants within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as a conceptual framework regarding the quality of life of older long-term care facility residents.Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional design was conducted. All participants (n = 210) completed a questionnaire that included the Sheltered Care Environmental Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Short Physical Performance Battery, the Mini-Mental State Examination, the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale. The outcome was assessed using mixed-design multiple regression with a covariance model and hierarchical regression.Results: Personal factors, environmental factors, body function and structures, and activity and participation explained 35.9%, 18.5%, 25.2%, and 52.1% of the variability in quality of life, respectively. The hierarchical model included 10 variables and explained 84.3% of the total variability in quality of life.Conclusions: Activity and participation showed high explanatory power for the quality of life of older long-term care facility residents. The influence of activity and participation in the older population is an important issue, although these factors remain relatively unexplored. This exploratory study used the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as a conceptual framework to provide a more sophisticated understanding of quality of life.Implications for rehabilitationAlthough the viewpoint of quality of life involves many more factors than an understanding of an individual disease or disability condition, activity and participation were found to be the most important factors.Simple clinical measures, such as activity limitations and participation restrictions, can be used as clinical markers of quality of life, thus enabling rehabilitation professionals to determine the quality of life of older people in institutions.The conceptual framework of determinants of quality of life that this study reports may be helpful for rehabilitation professionals to explore with patients to implement interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the effects of a modified Swedish version of an interactive group education programme, the Active Communication Education (ACE) programme, in five Swedish regions. This study also explored whether the pre- and post-programme outcomes differed with regard to region, age, gender, hearing loss (HL) or the attendance of significant others (SOs). DESIGN An intervention study with between- and within-group measurements was applied. STUDY SAMPLE Seventy-seven individuals with hearing impairments and a mean age of 73.9 years (SD = 9.8) from five different regions in Sweden participated in this study. RESULTS Statistically significant short- and long-term effects on communication strategy use, activity and participation were observed. The ACE programme was most effective for older individuals, women and participants with more severe HL. Individuals who attended with an SO tended to use better communication strategies. No regional differences were observed. The qualitative results indicated that the programme increased individuals' ability to cope and restored their social identities. CONCLUSIONS The ACE programme is effective, is recommended for implementation in clinical settings and is considered an alternative or additional treatment to hearing aid rehabilitation. Additional studies that include younger individuals and a control group are recommended.

Abstract
Based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), The Functioning Disability Evaluation Scale-Adult version (FUNDES-Adult) began development in 2011. The FUNDES-Adult was designed to assess the difficulty level of an individual’s activities and participation in daily life. There is a lack of research regarding the profile of activity and participation for the general adult population. The purposes of this study were to establish activity and participation norms for the general adult population in Taiwan and to describe, discuss, and compare the activity and participation profile with other population. Method: A population-based survey was administered in 2013 using a computer-assisted telephone interviewing system (CATI system). Using probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling and systematic sampling with random digit dialing (RDD), 1500 adults from Taiwan’s general population were selected to participate in the survey. The FUNDES-Adult with six domains and two dimensions (performance and capability) was used to obtain data on activities and participation levels. A higher domain score indicated higher participation restriction. Results: Approximately 50% of the respondents were male, and the average age of the respondents was 45.23 years. There were no significant differences in the demographic features between the sample and the population. Among the six domains, the self-care domain score was the lowest (least restriction) and the participation domain score was the highest (most restriction). Approximately 90% of the sample scored were less than 15, and only 0.1% scored more than 80. This is the first cross-national population-based survey to assess norms of activity and participation relevant to the general population of Taiwan. As such, the results of this survey can be used as a reference for comparing the activity and participation (AP) functioning of other countries and subgroups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM This study was conducted to analyze the agreement between International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) raters and to show its applicability in children with low vision. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty children (mean age: 11.70 ± 1.92 years) were included. To evaluate the independency of the sample, the Northwick Park Activities Daily Living questionnaire was used. The Low Vision Quality of Life Scale was used to evaluate quality of life. An ICF core set was developed to be used in this study. The core set consisted of 13 items for body functions, 3 items for body structures, 36 items for activity and participation, and 12 items for environmental factors. RESULTS High agreement was found between two raters in terms of subparameters of the ICF core set for activity and participation (r = 0.880, P = 0.000). CONCLUSION The findings indicate that the raters showed strong agreement in terms of the ICF core set used in this study. This shows that the core set can be used to evaluate activity and participation of children with low vision.

Abstract
Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) is a chronic debilitating multi-organic disorder, mainly assessed using ordinal-based impairment measures. To date, no outcome measure at the activity and participation level has been constructed in FAP. The current study aimed to design an interval activity/participation scale for FAP through Rasch methodology. A preliminary FAP Rasch-built overall disability scale (pre-FAP-RODS) containing 146 activity/participation items was assessed twice (interval: 2-4 week; test-retest reliability) in 248 patients with Val30Met FAP examined in Porto, Portugal, of which 65.7% have received liver transplantation. An ordinal-based 24-item FAP-symptoms inventory questionnaire (FAP-SIQ) was also assessed (validity purposes). The pre-FAP-RODS and FAP-SIQ data were subjected to Rasch analyses. The pre-FAP-RODS did not meet model's expectations. On the basis of requirements such as misfit statistics, differential item functioning, and local dependency, items were systematically removed until a final 34-item FAP-RODS(©) was constructed fulfilling all Rasch requirements. Acceptable reliability/validity scores were demonstrated. In conclusion, the 34-item FAP-RODS(©) is a disease-specific interval measure suitable for detecting activity and participation restrictions in patients with FAP. The use of the FAP-RODS(©) is recommended for future international clinical trials in patients with Val30Met FAP determining its responsiveness and its cross-cultural validation. Its expansion to other forms of FAP should also be focus of future clinical studies.

Abstract
The present study used a population-based sample of children with cerebral palsy (CP) to estimate the prevalence of motor speech impairment and its association with activity and participation. A sample of 79 Victorian children aged 4 years 11 months to 6 years 5 months was recruited through the Victorian CP Register. The presence of motor speech impairment was recorded using the Viking Speech Scale (VSS). Activity and participation outcomes included speech intelligibility (the National Technical Institute for the Deaf rating scale, NTID), the Functional Communication Classification System (FCCS) and Communication Function Classification System (CFCS). A parent completed rating scale was used to examine the association between motor speech impairment and participation. Ninety per cent (71/79) of children demonstrated a motor speech impairment. Strong associations were found between the VSS and NTID (< .001), CFCS (< .001), and FCCS levels (<.001). VSS levels III-IV were significantly associated with restrictions in home, school, and community-based participation as perceived by parents. Although some diversity in activity and participation outcomes was observed within specific VSS levels, the results of this study suggested that children with mild motor speech impairments are more likely to demonstrate superior activity and participation outcomes compared to children with moderate or severe deficits.
