Abstract
Purpose Pteridines are metabolites of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), being coenzymes for nitric oxide synthase (NOS). No study has clarified the relationship among pteridines and NOS, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) generated by pteridines, and reactive oxygen species. In this study, we administered arginine, a precursor of NO, and confirmed changes in the levels of pteridines, FeNO, and reactive oxygen species and their relationship to clarify the pathogenesis of airway inflammation in which oxidative stress is involved, such as bronchial asthma. Patients and Methods This is a prospective, randomized open-label study. Children, aged 2 to 15 years, who were scheduled for growth hormone stimulation tests and were able to undergo a respiratory function test were recruited. They were randomly divided into two groups: arginine-administered and control groups. In the former, L-arginine hydrochloride was intravenously administered. After administration, the levels of diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), serum pteridines, serum amino acids, and fractional exhaled NO (FeNO) were measured. Results We analyzed 15 children aged 4 to 14 years. In the arginine-administered group, there was an increase in the FeNO level and a decrease in the d-ROMs level, reaching a peak 30 min after administration, compared with the control group. In addition, there was a decrease in the serum biopterin level and an increase in the d-ROMs level, reaching peak 60 min after administration. Conclusion The administration of L-arginine increased the NO level and decreased the d-ROMs level. Due to this, biopterin may be consumed and decreased, leading to an increase in the d-ROMs level. As a reduction in reactive oxygen species leads to the relief of inflammation, arginine and biopterin may be useful for inhibiting inflammation.

Abstract
AbstractAntioxidants have important physiological roles in limiting the amount of oxidative damage that an organism experiences. One putative antioxidant is biliverdin, a pigment that is most commonly associated with the blue or green colors of avian eggshells. However, despite claims that biliverdin functions as an antioxidant, neither the typical physiological concentrations of biliverdin in most species nor the ability of biliverdin to oppose oxidative damage at these concentrations has been examined. Therefore, we quantified biliverdin in the plasma of six bird species and found that they circulated levels of biliverdin between 0.02 and 0.5 μM. We then used a pool of plasma from northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) and spiked it with one of seven different concentrations of biliverdin, creating plasma-based solutions ranging from 0.09 to 231 μM biliverdin. We then compared each solution's ability to oppose oxidative damage in response to hydrogen peroxide relative to a control addition of water. We found that hydrogen peroxide consistently induced moderate amounts of oxidative damage (quantified as reactive oxygen metabolites) but that no concentration of biliverdin ameliorated this damage. However, biliverdin and hydrogen peroxide interacted, as the amount of biliverdin in hydrogen peroxide-treated samples was reduced to approximately zero, unless the initial concentration was over 100 μM biliverdin. These preliminary findings based on in vitro work indicate that while biliverdin may have important links to metabolism and immune function, at physiologically relevant concentrations it does not detectably oppose hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative damage in plasma.

Abstract
Background/aim: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Under the influence of exogenous factors - allergens, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are released during cellular metabolism. They induce a series of pathological changes in the mucosa. Oxidative stress is а result of an imbalance between the production of ROS and the ability to neutralize them. The aim of this study is to compare the levels of oxidative stress between healthy children and children with allergic rhinitis. Material and methods: A total number of 60 children were included (30 healthy children and 30 children with AR). The oxidative stress index was determined by using the FRAS 5 (Free Radical Analytical System) Bravo system. Demographic characteristics, medical history, children's living conditions and eating habits were obtained from the questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements and the absolute number of eosinophils in the peripheral smear were performed on each child. Results: This study showed high oxidative stress index and a significantly higher value of the absolute number of eosinophils in the peripheral smear in children with AR in comparison to healthy children (p<0.05). The group of children with AR had more atopic characteristics and was more exposed to passive smoking than healthy children. Conclusion: Compared to healthy children, children with AR have a high index of oxidative stress, despite of the very high mean value of the concentration of water-soluble antioxidants in serum (PAT test) in the group of children with AR.

Abstract
Our aim was to measure the concentrations of derived reactive oxygen metabolite (d-ROMs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) of donkey mares and foals at delivery and to verify the protective role of the placenta against fetal oxidative stress. A total of 15 Amiata jennies with a physiological gestation length and delivery were included together with 17 foals (two twin foalings). After delivery, maternal and foal venous blood samples were collected along with blood from the artery. Circulating lactate and plasma d-ROMs and BAP were evaluated. The Wilcoxon test for paired data was applied to verify differences in d-ROMs and BAP values, while the Spearman test was used to evaluate correlations. A significantly higher d-ROMs concentration was found in jennies compared to their foals, and to the umbilical artery blood. The BAP was higher in jennies than in their foals, but no differences were observed in the umbilical artery blood. No difference was found between foals and their umbilical cord. Blood lactate was higher in foals than in their dams. Positive correlations were found between mares and umbilical cord for BAP and d-ROMs, and between mares and foals and umbilical cord for BAP. In conclusion, the placenta may be a protective factor for the fetus. As with equine foals, the antioxidant system of donkey foals does not seems to be effective at birth.

Abstract
AIMS We assessed whether oxidative stress (OS) is increased in children/adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) compared to healthy peers. Moreover, we searched for OS predictors in the T1D population. METHODS We compared the concentration of serum derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) in 412 children/adolescents with T1D (3.6-23.5 years old) to that of 138 healthy children/adolescents (1.2-19.2 years old) by ANOVA adjusted for age, gender, and BMI z-score (z-BMI). Applying a general linear model, in a subgroup of 331 patients using continuous glucose monitoring, we searched for predictors of d-ROMs among 3-day, 2-week, and 4-week metrics of glucose control and variability, such as mean blood glucose, percent time in range (70-180 mg/dl,TIR70-180), coefficient of variation, and others, as well as among conventional cardiovascular risk factors like current and average HbA1c, z-BMI, blood pressure percentiles, and lipid concentrations recorded retrospectively over the entire follow-up period. RESULTS D-ROMs levels were significantly higher in children/adolescents with T1D compared to controls [371.9 (64.2) versus 324.9 (46.3), p < 10-16]. Sex (B = 49.1, ƞ2 = 0.14, p = 1.3 * 10-9), age < 12 years in boys (B = 79.4, ƞ2 = 0.074, p = 10-7),3-day TIR70-180 (B = -0.87, ƞ2 = 0.048, p = 6.5 * 10-5), and z-BMI (B = 7.4, ƞ2 = 0.016, p = 0.022) predicted d-ROMs with an overall R2 of 0.278. CONCLUSIONS OS is increased in youth with T1D and only partially predicted by gender, age, glucose control, and anthropometry. Other potential determinants of OS in this population should be targeted in future studies.

Abstract
Interleukin 8 (IL8) is a major mediator of the innate immune response. Polymorphisms in this gene are associated with susceptibility to inflammatory disease in humans. Two major promoter polymorphic haplotypes (IL8-h1 and IL8-h2) segregating in cattle populations have shown a significant effect on the immune response profile in calves but their implications for transition cow immunity have not been established. The aims of this study were to assess functional relevance of the IL8 haplotypes on the immunological traits of periparturient cows (n = 32) belonging to three genetic groups: Holstein (HO), Simmental (SI) and their crosses (CR) and to evaluate the frequency of IL8 haplotypes in the HO (dairy) and SI (dual purpose) pure breeds. IL8 haplotypes showed a significant effect on circulating number of both T helper lymphocytes (P = 0.0133) and T cytotoxic lymphocytes (P = 0.0024). Differences in percentage of CD14+ monocytes and T lymphocyte subsets were found between haplotype groups at different time points. Plasma concentrations of Serum Amyloid A (SAA) and Haptoglobin (Hp) were enhanced at calving in IL8-h2 (P = 0.0019, P = 0.0029) and IL8-het (P = 0.050 and P = 0.052) respectively, compared with IL8-h1 cows. In contrast, significantly lower levels of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) activation were identified in IL8-h2 and IL8-het cows after calving compared with IL8-h1 cows. Furthermore, genotyping results showed that SI cows have a high frequency of the homozygous IL8-h2 haplotype compared to the HO cows (87.5 % vs 40 %) which reflects the different selective pressure between the two pure breeds. In conclusion, our preliminary data suggests that IL8 promoter haplotype is associated with significant and dynamic changes in immunological traits during peripartum and early lactation period. Future work will focus on a more comprehensive assessment of immune changes in additional cows.

Abstract
A physiological equilibrium exists between pro- and antioxidant factors. When the oxidant factors exceed the capacity of their removal or inactivation, oxidative stress (OS) occurs. The OS levels were assayed in plasma obtained from 2 bird species. Blood samples were collected from 20 healthy domestic chicken hens, 10 living in an intensive farming environment and 10 free-range, and from 18 healthy Eurasian magpies (Pica pica; 7 females and 11 males, with an estimated age of >1 year of age). For OS biomarker assessment, the determinable reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) were measured, and the plasmatic antioxidant test (PAT) was performed; the OS index (OSI) was then calculated (d-ROMs/PAT × 1000) as a parameter of overall oxidative stress. Moreover, lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring plasmatic malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. A hematological evaluation was also performed on each bird with a hemocytometer, on which a blood sample was placed to obtain both a total and differential white blood cell (WBC) count. In hens, OSI and MDA levels were significantly higher (P = .04, and P = .004) in subjects from intensive farming (14.7 ± 7.1 and 27.2 ± 10.4 nmol/mL) than in those bred in rural conditions (5.6 ± 10.3 and 8.2 ± 13.3 nmol/mL). In magpies, a positive correlation between the total WBC count and OS was found, and both d-ROMs and OSI were significantly higher (P = .03) in subjects with a total WBC count greater than the median value (20.4 × 103 cells/µL) with respect to those with a total WBC count less than the median value. The results generated from this study indicate that higher OS levels occurred in hens bred in an intensive indoor farm environment compared with outdoor free-range conditions. Possibly the higher OS levels could be related to the higher stocking density and dust levels found in the indoor facility. Additionally, the correlation between OS biomarker levels in magpies and total WBC count suggests that OS level is influenced by immune response, in agreement with previous studies. Collectively, present data seem to be promising for the application of OS measurement in avian medicine for health and animal welfare monitoring.

Abstract
Oxidation damages cells and muscles, and thus, causes injuries and fatigue, which negatively affect the conditioning of athletes. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of high-antioxidant fruits (kiwifruit) intake on oxidative stress level (d-ROMs) and antioxidant activity (BAP) in male middle- and long-distance runners routinely exposed to oxidative stress. This study was performed from May to July 2017 (Study 1) and October to December 2018 (Study 2). The subjects in Study 1 were 30 male runners, of which 15 consumed two yellow kiwifruits (Zespri® SunGold Kiwifruit) per day for one month of the survey period (Intake group). The subjects of Study 2 were 20 male runners who had high d-ROMs from preliminary testing. These runners consumed two yellow kiwifruits (Zespri® SunGold Kiwifruit) per day for two months. d-ROMs and BAP were measured using a free radical analyzer. In study 1, the d-ROMs decreased while the potential antioxidant capacity (BAP/d-ROMs ratio) increased in the Intake group. In study 2, BAP/d-ROMs ratio was higher after one and two months compared to that at pre-intervention. Study findings suggested that consumption of kiwifruits may reduce oxidative stress levels and increase antioxidant activity, resulting in improved potential antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive and directly attack surrounding biomolecules to deteriorate cellular and tissue functions. Meanwhile, ROS also serve as signaling mediators to upregulate pro-inflammatory cytokine expression via activation of the nuclear factor kappa B signaling pathway, and the increased pro-inflammatory cytokines trigger respiratory burst of inflammatory cells that further accelerates ROS production in the inflamed tissue. Such crosstalk between ROS and inflammatory responses leads to a chain reaction of negativity, and cause progression of several chronic pathologies. Since molecular hydrogen is known to preferentially remove cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrites, and to prevent cell and tissue damage, we here examined whether electrolyzed hydrogen water (EHW) enriched with molecular hydrogen and reactive hydrogen storing platinum nanoparticles dissolved from an electrode could alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation induced by continuous stress challenges. Five-day continuous stress loading to rats elevated reactive oxygen metabolites-derived compounds (d-ROMs), interleukin (IL)-1β, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels and decreased the biological antioxidant potential (BAP) level. Drinking EHW during 5-day continuous stress loading significantly alleviated all of these changes. The results suggest that EHW could suppress stress-response-associated oxidative stress and IL-1β level elevation in vivo, and that drinking of EHW is effective for controlling stress responses via its antioxidant potential.

Abstract
Aim: Both oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The serum level of derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) is a measure of the total amount of hydroperoxides serving as a marker of oxidative stress. We investigated whether d-ROMs could predict the clinical outcomes in hemodialysis patients and whether the associations of d-ROMs with the outcomes are independent of a marker of inflammation, C-reactive protein (CRP). Methods: This was a prospective cohort study in hemodialysis patients. The key exposures were the serum levels of d-ROMs and CRP. The outcome measures were all-cause mortality and new CVD events. Results: A total of 517 patients were analyzed. d-ROMs correlated positively with CRP. During follow-up for 5 years, 107 patients died, and 190 patients experienced new CVD events. In the Kaplan–Meier analyses, both higher d-ROMs and higher CRP levels predicted higher risks for mortality and CVD events. By Cox proportional-hazard regression analysis adjusted for potential confounders excluding CRP, d-ROMs exhibited a significant association with all-cause mortality, but this association was no longer significant after further adjustment for CRP. Using the same model, CRP exhibited a significant association with all-cause mortality, but this association was no longer significant after further adjustment for d-ROMs. When we analyzed new CVD events as the outcome, CRP was a significant predictor, whereas the level of d-ROMs was not. Conclusions: Although d-ROMs predicted mortality and CVD events in unadjusted models, the associations of d-ROMs with these outcomes were not independent of CRP. Oxidative stress and inflammation appear to share common causal pathways.

Abstract
Infection can result in substantial costs to animals, so they frequently respond by removing infectious agents with an immune response. However, immune responses entail their own costs, including upregulation of processes that destroy pathogens (e.g. the production of reactive oxygen species) and processes that limit the extent of self-damage during the immune response (e.g. production of anti-inflammatory proteins such as haptoglobin). Here, we simulated bacterial infection across a 1000-fold range using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administered to northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus), and quantified metrics related to pro-inflammatory conditions [i.e. generation of oxidative damage (d-ROMs), depletion of antioxidant capacity], anti-inflammatory mechanisms (i.e. production of haptoglobin, expression of the enzyme heme oxygenase, production of the organic molecule biliverdin) and nutritional physiology (e.g. circulating triglyceride levels, maintenance of body mass). We detected increases in levels of haptoglobin and d-ROMs even at LPS doses that are 1/1000th the concentration of doses frequently used in ecoimmunological studies, while loss of body mass and decreases in circulating triglycerides manifested only in individuals receiving the highest dose of LPS (1 mg LPS kg-1 body mass), highlighting variation among dose-dependent responses. Additionally, individuals that lost body mass during the course of the experiment had lower levels of circulating triglycerides, and those with more oxidative damage had greater levels of heme oxygenase expression, which highlights the complex interplay between pro- and anti-inflammatory processes. Because low doses of LPS may simulate natural infection levels, variation in dose-dependent physiological responses may be particularly important in modeling how free-living animals navigate immune challenges.

Abstract
Simple Summary The present study evaluated oxidative and antioxidant status in dairy cows with Left Displacement of the Abomasum (LDA), an economically important postpartum disease in cattle. The oxidant capacity of plasma measured with a test fo reactive oxygen metabolites, the d-ROMs test, was significantly higher and the plasma biological antioxidant potential (BAP), measured with the BAP test was lower in the LDA group compared with the control group. Oxidative status was assessed using an arbitrary index obtained from the ratio between d-ROMs and BAP and the results showed that cows with LDA experience an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. Abstract Left Displacement of the Abomasum (LDA) is a condition that occurs in high-producing postpartum dairy cows and it causes economic losses. Studies performed in the last decade indicate that adult dairy cows experience oxidative stress. Increasing interest in the role of oxidative status in ruminant medicine has emphasized the need to develop reliable methods to assess it. A few studies have evaluated the relationship between LDA and oxidative status, mostly through the determination of single parameters of oxidation and the determination of antioxidant status separately, with contrasting results. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidative status by the measurement of Reactive Oxygen Metabolites with d-ROMs and Biological Antioxidant Potential BAP and the calculation of the Oxidative Status index in 74 multiparous dairy cows with LDA. Each case was matched with a control herdmate. The amount of free oxygen radicals in plasma samples was determined using the d-ROMs test, the concentration of antioxidants was measured using the BAP test and the Oxidative Status index was also calculated. The concentration of d-ROMs was significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (179 ± 37.7 U CARR and 158 ± 23.0 U CARR, respectively), while the concentration of BAP was significantly lower in the study group than in the control group (2156 ± 98.1 µmol/L vs. 2558 ± 108.5 µmol/L). The Oxidative Status index value was significantly higher in cows with LDA than in healthy cows (8.3 ± 1.51 vs. 6.2 ± 0.76). The results of this study indicated that an inbalance between oxidants and antioxidants occurred in cattle with LDA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prognostic significance of oxidative stress (OS) and antioxidant defence status measurement in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). METHODS d-ROMs test and BAP test were evaluated at diagnosis of 165 patients with CLL and correlated with clinical-biological features and prognosis. RESULTS An increased oxidative damage (d-ROMs test) and a reduced antioxidant potential (BAP test) were found in CLL patients than normal controls (P<.0001). CLL patients with higher d-ROMs values had higher number of circulating white blood cells and lymphocytes, and higher values of β2 -microglobulin. Higher d-ROMs values were found in female (P=.0003), in patients with unmutated IgVH (P=.04), unfavourable cytogenetics (P=.002) and more advanced clinical stage (P=.002). Higher BAP test values were found in patients expressing CD49d (P=.01) and with more advanced clinical stage (P=.004). At a median follow-up of 48 months, CLL patients with d-ROMs ≥418 CARR U were found to have a shorter time to first treatment (TFT) (P=.0002), and a reduced survival (P=.006) than others. CLL patients with BAP test values ≥2155 μmol/L had a shorter TFT (P=.008) and a shorter survival (P=.003). CONCLUSIONS OS can affect CLL patients by concomitantly increasing reactive oxygen metabolites production and decreasing antioxidant defences.

Abstract
Resveratrol has been reported to have potent anti-atherosclerotic effects in animal studies. However, there are few interventional studies in human patients with atherosclerogenic diseases. The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) reflects arterial stiffness and is a clinical surrogate marker of atherosclerosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of resveratrol on arterial stiffness assessed by CAVI in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, 50 patients with T2DM received supplement of a 100mg resveratrol tablet (total resveratrol: oligo-stilbene 27.97 mg/100 mg/day) or placebo daily for 12 weeks. CAVI was assessed at baseline and the end of study. Body weight (BW), blood pressure (BP), glucose and lipid metabolic parameters, and diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs; an oxidative stress marker) were also measured.Resveratrol supplementation decreased systolic BP (-5.5 ± 13.0 mmHg), d-ROMs (-25.6 ± 41.8 U.CARR), and CAVI (-0.4 ± 0.7) significantly (P < 0.05) and decreased BW (-0.8 ± 2.1 kg, P = 0.083) and body mass index (-0.5 ± 0.8 kg/m2, P = 0.092) slightly compared to baseline, while there were no significant changes in the placebo group. Decreases in CAVI and d-ROMs were significantly greater in the resveratrol group than in the placebo group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified resveratrol supplementation as an independent predictor for a CAVI decrease of more than 0.5.In conclusion, 12-week resveratrol supplementation may improve arterial stiffness and reduce oxidative stress in patients with T2DM. Resveratrol may be beneficial in preventing the development of atherosclerosis induced by diabetes. However, a large-scale cohort study is required to validate the present findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND d-ROMs test developed to determine the degree of individual oxidative stress may predict cardiovascular events. METHODS AND RESULTS 265 patients (204 men, 61 women; age, 65±13years) who had been treated for cardiovascular disease were divided evenly by quartile of baseline d-ROMs levels, and were followed up. During the observation periods of 2.66±1.47years, there were 14 (5%) deaths, 8 (3%) cardiovascular deaths, 13 (5%) major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), and 51 (19%) all cardiovascular events including heart failure, cardiovascular surgery, and revascularization. Log-rank tests demonstrated that the patients in the 4th quartile (d-ROMs≧395.00U.CARR) had a higher incidence rate of cardiovascular death than those in the 2nd quartile (d-ROMs 286.00-335.00, p=0.022). In multivariate Cox regression analysis, even after adjustment for age, sex, coronary risk factors, C-reactive protein, and renal function, high d-ROMs was a risk factor for all-cause death [adjusted HR of 4th vs. 1st quartile, 10.791 (95% confidence interval 1.032-112.805), p=0.047], and all cardiovascular events [HR of 4th vs. 1st quartile, 2.651 (95% confidence interval 1.138-6.177), p=0.024]. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that d-ROMs is a useful oxidative stress marker to assess prognosis and risk of further cardiovascular events.

Abstract
PURPOSE We previously examined factors that affect the measured derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), an indicator of reactive oxygen species production, and biological antioxidant potential (BAP), an indicator of antioxidant capacity, in typical health checkup examinees and reported the usefulness of measuring both indicators simultaneously. In addition, a positive correlation reportedly exists between d-ROMs and the visceral fat area measured by using computed tomography. A recent study of the relationship between uric acid levels and various obesity-related factors found that visceral fat was the factor most strongly related to uric acid levels. Uric acid is itself a potent endogenous antioxidant, but because reactive oxygen species are produced during uric acid generation, it is suggested that uric acid may have opposing effects. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of febuxostat, a novel xanthine oxidase inhibitor, on oxidative stress. METHODS Study subjects were 43 hyperuricemia outpatients receiving care in the internal medicine department of our institution. The subjects were divided into a new administration group (29 patients) and a switched administration group (14 patients); the latter were allopurinol-treated patients with hyperuricemia who were switched to febuxostat. In addition to measuring the patients' uric acid and creatinine levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate before and after treatment, their d-ROMs and BAP as well as the BAP/d-ROMs ratio were also measured. FINDINGS Both groups exhibited significant decreases in uric acid levels, as well as significant decreases in d-ROMs and BAP. No significant changes were observed in the BAP/dROMs ratio or renal function, including creatinine levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate. IMPLICATIONS Febuxostat could significantly reduce d-ROMs. However, BAP levels were also significantly reduced concurrently. No changes were observed in the BAP/d-ROMs ratios. This regulatory mechanism is believed to have counteracted changes in the in vivo oxidative stress balance caused by febuxostat administration.

Abstract
The present study aimed to clarify changes of oxidative stress and antioxidative
functions in treadmill-exercised Thoroughbred horses (n=5, 3 to 7 years old), using
recently developed techniques for measurement of serum d-ROMs for oxidative stress, and
BAP for antioxidative markers. Also, the effect of nasogastric administration of
hydrogen-rich water (HW) or placebo water preceding the treadmill exercise on these
parameters was examined. Each horse was subjected to a maximum level of treadmill exercise
in which the horses were exhausted at an average speed of 13.2 ± 0.84 m/sec. Blood samples
were taken 4 times, immediately before the intake of HW or placebo water at 30 min
preceding the treadmill exercise, immediately before the exercise (pre-exercise),
immediately after the exercise (post-exercise) and at 30 min following the exercise. In
all horses, both d-ROMs and BAP values significantly increased at post-exercise. The
increase in d-ROMs tended to be lower in the HW trial, as compared to the placebo trial at
pre-exercise. The increase in BAP was considerable at approximately 150% of the
pre-exercise values in both the HW and placebo treatment trials. The BAP/d-ROMs ratio was
significantly elevated at post-exercise in both treatment trials, while a significant
elevation was also observed at pre-exercise in the HW trial. BAP, d-ROM, and the BAP/d-ROM
ratio tended to decline at 30 min after the exercise, except BAP and BAP/d-ROMs in the
placebo trial. These results demonstrate that the marked elevation of oxidative stress and
anitioxidative functions occurred simultaneously in the intensively exercised horses, and
suggest a possibility that HW has some antioxidative efficacy.
