Influence of Cement Kiln Dust on Long-Term Mechanical Behavior and Microstructure of High-Performance Concrete

Cement production in the world market is steadily increasing. In 2000, it was 1600 million tons, while as of 2013, the annual amount exceeded 4000 million tons. The burning of cement clinker is associated with the generation of waste. It is estimated that the amount of cement kiln dust (CKD), during combustion, reaches about 15-20%, which means 700 million tons per year. However, not all types of by-products are reusable due to high alkali, sulfate, and chloride contents, which can adversely affect the environment. One environmentally friendly solution may be to use CKD in the production of high-performance concrete (HPC), as a substitute for some of the cement. This paper presents a study of the short- and long-term physical and mechanical properties of HPC with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% CKD additives. The experiments determined density, water absorption, porosity, splitting tensile strength, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and evaluated the microstructure of the concrete. The addition of CKD up to 10% caused an increase in the 28- and 730-day compressive strengths, while the values decreased slightly when CKD concentration increased to 20%. Splitting tensile strength decreased proportionally with 5-20% amounts of CKD regardless of HPC age. Porosity, absorbability, and ultrasonic pulse velocity decreased with increasing cement dust, while the bulk density increased for HPC with CKD. Microstructure analyses showed a decrease in the content of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), acceleration of setting, and formation of wider microcracks with an increase in CKD. From the results, it was shown that a 15% percentage addition of CKD can effectively replace cement in the production of HPC and contribute to reducing the amount of by-product from the burning of cement clinker.

Effect of Municipal Solid Waste Slag on the Durability of Cementitious Composites in Terms of Resistance to Freeze-Thaw Cycling

The article presents durability results for cement mortars made with the addition of slag from municipal waste incineration plants as a replacement for natural aggregate. The undertaken durability tests included frost resistance tests and evaluation of strength, microstructure, water absorption and abrasiveness before and after 150 freeze-thaw cycles. The work reveals that MSWI slag in amounts up to 50 vol. % caused deterioration in the workability and water absorption of cement mortars, regardless of the type of cement used. This, in turn, resulted in a reduction in the compressive and flexural strengths of the composites compared to mortars made with sand alone. Nevertheless, the use of a higher grade of cement, CEM I 52.5 R, resulted in an increase in compressive strength and thus increased the mortars' frost and abrasion resistance. In addition, after the induced freeze-thaw cycles, mortars made with MSWI slag showed comparable or higher frost and abrasion resistance than those made using natural aggregate.

Strength and Durability Properties of Antimony Tailing Coarse Aggregate (ATCA) Concrete

Antimony (Sb) is a trace element applied widely in modern industry. A large number of tailing solid wastes are left and accumulated in the mining area after purifying the precious antimony from the antimony ores, causing serious pollution to the environment. The major aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high-strength concrete. Concrete specimens with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% ATCA replacing the NCA in conventional concrete were prepared for evaluating the performance of ATCA concrete. The investigators find that ATCA concrete has good workability, and the mechanical properties and long-term behavior (shrinkage and creep) of ATCA concrete with all replacement levels are superior to those of NCA concrete. The durability indices of ATCA concrete, such as the frost-resistant, chloride permeability, and resistance to carbonation, are better than those of NCA concrete. While the alkali activity and cracking sensitivity behavior of ATCA concrete seem to be decreased, nevertheless, the difference is not significant and can be neglected. The researchers demonstrate that all of the control indices of ATCA concrete meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. Overall, ATCA can be used in concrete to minimize environmental problems and natural resources depletion.

Finite Beam Element for Curved Steel-Concrete Composite Box Beams Considering Time-Dependent Effect

Curved steel–concrete composite box beams are widely used in urban overpasses and ramp bridges. In contrast to straight composite beams, curved composite box beams exhibit complex mechanical behavior with bending–torsion coupling, including constrained torsion, distortion, and interfacial biaxial slip. The shear-lag effect and curvature variation in the radial direction should be taken into account when the beam is sufficiently wide. Additionally, long-term deflection has been observed in curved composite box beams due to the shrinkage and creep effects of the concrete slab. In this paper, an equilibrium equation for a theoretical model of curved composite box beams is proposed according to the virtual work principle. The finite element method is adopted to obtain the element stiffness matrix and nodal load matrix. The age-adjusted effective modulus method is introduced to address the concrete creep effects. This 26-DOF finite beam element model is able to simulate the constrained torsion, distortion, interfacial biaxial slip, shear lag, and time-dependent effects of curved composite box beams and account for curvature variation in the radial direction. An elaborate finite element model of a typical curved composite box beam is established. The correctness and applicability of the proposed finite beam element model is verified by comparing the results from the proposed beam element model to those from the elaborate finite element model. The proposed beam element model is used to analyze the long-term behavior of curved composite box beams. The analysis shows that significant changes in the displacement, stress and shear-lag coefficient occur in the curved composite beams within the first year of loading, after which the variation tendency becomes gradual. Moreover, increases in the central angle and shear connection stiffness both reduce the change rates of displacement and stress with respect to time.

Delayed Hypoxemia after Traumatic Brain Injury Exacerbates Long-Term Behavioral Deficits

Hypoxemia during initial stabilization of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been associated with poorer outcomes. However, the effects of delayed hypoxemia occurring during intensive care post-TBI on outcome is unclear. Pre-clinical models of TBI have rarely shown cognitive or behavioral deficits beyond 6 weeks post-injury and commonly have not included modeling of secondary insults. We have previously developed a murine model of TBI followed by delayed hypoxemia to model the secondary insult of hypoxemia and brain hypoxia occurring in the intensive care setting. Understanding long-term effects of delayed hypoxemia post-TBI in our murine model is critical for future testing of candidate therapeutics targeting secondary brain hypoxia. For this study, forty 5-week-old male mice were randomized to controlled cortical impact (CCI; N = 24) or sham surgery (N = 16). One day later, awake animals were randomized to 60 min of hypoxemia or normoxemia. Six months after initial injury, animals underwent behavior testing (Morris water maze, social interaction, and tail suspension) before euthanasia for immunohistochemistry (IHC) assessments. At 6 months post-injury, mice experiencing CCI and hypoxemia (CCI+H) had longer swim distances to the hidden platform (51 cm) compared to CCI alone (26 cm) or sham animals (22 cm). During social interaction assessments, CCI + H mice spent less time interacting with novel stimulus mice (79 sec) than CCI alone (101 sec) or sham animals (139 sec). CCI + H had larger lesion volumes compared to CCI alone (14.0% vs. 9.9%; p < 0.003). Glial fibrillary acidic protein IHC at 6 months post-injury demonstrated increased astrogliosis in the ipsilateral white matter of CCI + H compared to CCI alone. To summarize, this clinically relevant model of delayed hypoxia post-TBI resulted in long-term behavioral deficits and evidence of exacerbated structural injury.
