The association between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and chronic kidney disease in a Chinese adult population: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) was confirmed as a novel inflammatory marker and strongly associated with the risk of several diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MHR and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a Chinese adult population.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, 232,775 community-dwelling adults in Binhai who completed health checkups in 2021 were enrolled. Participants were categorized based on the MHR quartiles. Clinical characteristics of participants across different groups were compared using one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis h-test, and Chi-squared test as appropriate. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were taken to assess the relationship between MHR and the presence of CKD, as well as its association with low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and proteinuria. Subgroup analyses were further executed to confirm the reliability of this relationship.

RESULTS

A total of 21,014 (9.0%) individuals were diagnosed with CKD. Characteristic indicators including waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), serum uric acid (SUA), triglyceride, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) showed a gradual increase with higher MHR quartiles, whereas parameters such as age, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and eGFR decreased (p < .001). In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, we observed independent associations between MHR (per 1 SD increase) and CKD, as well as low eGFR and proteinuria, with odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of 1.206 (1.186-1.225), 1.289 (1.260-1.319), and 1.150 (1.129-1.171), respectively (p < .001). Similar conclusions were confirmed in subgroup analysis stratified by gender, age, BMI, central obesity, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus, after justification for confounding factors.

CONCLUSION

Elevated MHR level was independently associated with the presence of CKD, suggesting that it might serve as a useful clinical tool for risk stratification, offering valuable insights to inform preventive and therapeutic approaches for clinicians in their routine medical practice.

Sex-specific association between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and extensive abdominal aortic calcification in humans

Recent studies have identified monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) as a simple marker of atherosclerosis. Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is a direct result of vascular atherosclerosis. Our study aims to investigate the association between MHR and the prevalent extensive AAC and assess the value of MHR for identifying prevalent extensive AAC. 2857 subjects (28.07%) from the cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014 were included in our study. AAC was detected through dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and quantified by Kauppila score. Extensive AAC was identified in 153 (10.44% of 1465) females and 146 (10.49% of 1392) males. With the full adjustment, each SD increase of MHR resulted in an 87.3% additional risk for extensive AAC in females. When dividing into quartiles, the top quartile had a 3.472 times risk of prevalent extensive AAC than the bottom quartile. However, no significant association was observed in males. Furthermore, smooth curve fitting implicated that the significant association was linear in the whole range of MHR among females. Additionally, ROC demonstrated an improvement in the identification of extensive AAC only among females when introducing MHR into established risk factors of atherosclerosis (0.808 vs. 0.864, p < 0.001). Finally, category-free net reclassification index and integrated discrimination index also supported the improvement by MHR in females. Our study revealed a linear association between MHR and prevalent extensive AAC in females. Moreover, our results implicated the potential value of MHR to refine the identification of prevalent extensive AAC in females.

Comparison of the Predicting Value of Neutrophil to high-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio and Monocyte to high-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio for in-Hospital Prognosis and Severe Coronary Artery Stenosis in Patients with ST-Segment Elevation Acute Myocardial Infarction Following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Retrospective Study

Background

Neutrophil to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHR) has demonstrated predictive value for coronary artery disease (CAD). However, few research has been conducted on the predictive capacity of NHR for Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) or the degree of coronary artery stenosis in hospitalized ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

Methods

The study involved 486 patients diagnosed with STEMI between the years 2020 and 2023. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the risk factors for MACE after PCI and severe coronary artery stenosis during hospitalization. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to determine predictive power of NHR and MHR. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to assess the correlation between NHR, MHR and the Gensini score (GS).

Results

Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the NHR and MHR were the independent risk factor for MACE during hospitalization in STEMI patients (MHR: the odds ratio (OR)=2.347, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.082-5.089, P=0.031) (NHR: OR=1.092, 95% CI=1.025-1.165, P=0.004). In addition, NHR was also an independent risk factor for high GS (NHR: OR=1.103, 95% CI=1.047-1.162, P<0.001), and the MHR was not an independent risk factor. The ROC curve analysis was performed to evaluate the predictive ability of NHR and MHR for in-hospital MACE in STEMI patients after primary PCI. The area under the curve (AUC) for NHR was 0.681. The AUC for MHR was 0.672. Regarding the prediction of high GS, the AUC for NHR was 0.649. The AUC for MHR was 0.587. Spearman correlation analysis showed that NHR exhibited stronger correlation with GS, while MHR was lower (NHR: r=0.291, P<0.001) (MHR: r=0.156, P<0.001).

Conclusion

These findings highlight the potential clinical utility of NHR as a predictive indicator in STEMI patients after PCI during hospitalization, both for MACE events and the degree of coronary artery stenosis.

The clinical value of the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio in primary biliary cholangitis

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) and alkaline phosphatase-to-platelet ratio (APPR) in the diagnosis and prognosis of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Clinical and laboratory data were retrospectively collected and analyzed from 92 PBC patients, 92 patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), 120 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and 124 healthy controls (HCs). We compared the levels of MHR and APPR among the groups with PBC, AIH, CHB and HCs, and analyzed the correlations between MHR and APPR with laboratory indices including aspartate aminotransferase platelet ratio index, fibrosis index based on 4 factors, and Mayo score in PBC. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to analyze the diagnostic performance of MHR and APPR for PBC, AIH, and CHB, respectively. MHR and APPR were significantly increased in PBC group than that in AIH, CHB and HCs groups (each P < .05). MHR and APPR were significantly higher in Child class B|C than that in class A in PBC patients. (P < .01, P < .05, respectively). MHR and APPR were positively related to the Mayo score [R = 0.508 (P < .001), R = 0.295 (P = .008), respectively]. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of MHR and APPR in diagnosing PBC were 0.764 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.699-0.821, P < .001) and 0.952 (95% CI: 0.915-0.977, P < .001), respectively, and the area under the curve of the combination of both was 0.974 (95% CI: 0.941-0.991, P < .001). MHR and APPR may prove to be useful prognostic biomarkers for PBC, and the combination of MHR and APPR have some clinical diagnostic value of PBC.

The association between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and clinical prognosis of acute ischemic stroke after intravenous thrombolysis therapy

The monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) ratio (MHR) is accepted as a novel marker for demonstrating inflammation. We investigated whether the monocyte-to-HDL ratio is related to the 90-day clinical prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) after intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). Patients with AIS treated with alteplase IVT were included consecutively, and clinical information and laboratory data were collected. The 90-day prognosis of all patients was determined with a clinical assessment using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). The optimal cutoff values for patients were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve method. Then, a multivariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the risk factors for poor prognosis of IVT in AIS. We retrospectively enrolled 192 patients who were diagnosed with AIS and received IVT between February 2020 and July 2022, with final follow-up on September 30, 2022. The patients in the poor prognosis group had significantly higher monocyte counts, lower HDL levels, and higher MHR values than the good prognosis group. The optimal cutoff value of the MHR for predicting the 3-month outcome of acute pontine infarction was 0.621. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that the MHR (OR = 4.626, 95% CI: 1.156-18.512, P = .030) was strongly associated with poor prognosis in AIS. The MHR is an independent risk factor for the clinical prognosis of AIS patients receiving IVT therapy and shows a certain predictive value.

The Value of the Monocyte to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio in Assessing the Severity of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Retrospective Single Center Cohort Study

Background

Inflammatory responses and metabolic abnormalities play essential roles in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA). Our study aimed to evaluate the association between monocyte-to-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio (MHR) and OA and compared it with other systemic inflammatory markers.

Methods

This study recruited 323 OA cases and age- and sex-matched 283 control participants during the same period. Demographic, clinical, and imaging data and laboratory indicators were obtained from participants' records. Systemic inflammatory markers were calculated for both cohorts. The diagnostic effectiveness of each index for distinguishing patients with OA was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Spearman's method and ordered logistic regression were used to analyze the association between each indicator and Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) grade.

Results

MHR was significantly higher (0.38±0.18 vs 0.25±0.07, p < 0.0001) in OA patients than healthy controls. MHR had the largest area under the ROC curve for predicting OA. Analysis of ordered logistic regression indicated that MHR was a risk factor for OA radiological severity. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that MHR significantly correlates with the KL grade. Moreover, MHR was significantly higher in early stage patients than in healthy controls.

Conclusion

These results suggest that an elevated MHR could reflect knee OA severity and might be a useful marker for diagnosis and monitoring of OA.

Is the variation in monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio a predictor of major cardiovascular events after acute coronary syndrome?

In clinical practice, we need to develop new tools to identify the residual cardiovascular risk after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study aimed to evaluate whether the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) variation (ΔMHR) obtained during hospital admission (MHR1) and repeated in the first outpatient evaluation (MHR2) is a predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) after ACS. One hundred ninety-one patients admitted for ACS were prospectively included. The ΔMHR was calculated by subtracting MHR1 from MHR2. Patients were followed for 166±38 days in which the occurrence of MACE was observed. The best cutoff for ΔMHR was zero (0), and individuals were divided into two groups: ΔMHR<0 (n=113) and ΔMHR≥0 (n=78). The presence of MACE was higher in the ΔMHR≥0 (22%) than in the ΔMHR<0 (7%), with a hazard ratio (HR) of 3.96 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.74-8.99; P=0.0004). After adjusting for confounders, ΔMHR≥0 remained an independent MACE predictor with an adjusted HR of 3.13 (95%CI: 1.35-7.26, P=0.008). In conclusion, our study showed that ΔMHR was an independent MACE predictor after ACS. Thus, ΔMHR is a potential marker of residual cardiovascular risk after ACS.

The monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio is associated with the occurrence of atrial fibrillation among NAFLD patients: A propensity-matched analysis

BACKGROUND

Accumulating evidence suggests that patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have a significantly high risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF). Systemic inflammation, metabolic disorders and oxidative stress could be the potential mechanisms by which NAFLD drives AF. Monocyte-to- high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) has emerged as a novel biomarker of inflammation and oxidative stress that has not been studied in AF with NAFLD patients. We aimed to investigate the relationship between MHR and the risk of AF among NAFLD patients.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of the patients with NAFLD in the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from January 2019 to October 2022, among whom 204 patients with AF were enrolled as NAFLD+AF group and 613 patients without AF were enrolled as NAFLD control, and 152 patients were selected from each group based on propensity score matching (PSM) at a ratio of 1:1 to balance the covariates between groups. The t-test or the Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison of continuous data between two groups; the chi-square test or the Fisher's exact test was used for comparison of categorical data between two groups. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the independent predictor for occurrence of AF among NAFLD patients. Trend chi-square test to analyze the prevalence of AF among MHR tertiles, and then the correlation between MHR and the risk of AF confirmed by restricted cubic splines (RCS). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine the optimum MHR cutoff value to predict AF.

RESULTS

Univariate analysis showed that AF patients had higher MHR than non-AF patients (P < 0.001). Meanwhile, compared with pure NAFLD patients, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that MHR remained to be an independent risk factor for AF after adjusting for confounding risk factors (OR = 10.67, 95% CI 2.17-52.37, P = 0.004). TC、HDL-C were also independent risk factors for AF. Among them, TC and HDL-C are protective factors for AF. The trend chi-square test showed that the risk of AF increased with an increase in MHR (P < 0.05). However, the RCS showed a nonlinear and J-shaped relationship between MHR and the risk of AF (P for non-linearity = 0.023). The occurrence of AF increased with increasing MHR only when MHR > 0.44. The ROC curve showed that MHR combined with traditional risk factors can improve the ability to predict AF.

CONCLUSION

MHR is an independently associated with incident AF in patients with NAFLD and show a certain predictive value.

Adjustment of the GRACE Risk Score by Monocyte to High-Density Lipoprotein Ratio Improves Prediction of Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

Background and Aims

The monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR), a novel marker for inflammation and lipid metabolism, has been demonstrated to be associated with poor prognosis in many patient populations. However, the prognostic influence of MHR in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is poorly understood. Here, we sought to investigate the relationship between MHR and adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in such patients and determine whether MHR could improve the GRACE risk score based prognostic models.

Methods and Results

MHR was applied to 1,720 patients with ACS undergoing PCI who were admitted to our CV center from June 2016 to November 2017. These patients were stratified into three groups according to MHR tertiles. The relationship between MHR and the primary endpoint (overall death, non-fatal stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or unplanned repeat revascularization) was examined by Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. During a median follow-up of 31 months, 353 patients had at least one primary endpoint event. Compared with those in the lowest MHR tertile, patients in the middle and highest tertiles [adjusted HR: 1.541 (95% CI: 1.152–2.060) and 1.800 (95%CI: 1.333–2.432), respectively], had a higher risk of the primary endpoint. The addition of MHR has an incremental effect on the predictive ability of the GRACE risk score for the primary endpoint (cNRI: 0.136, P < 0.001; IDI: 0.006, P < 0.001).

Conclusion

MHR was independently and significantly associated with adverse CV outcomes in ACS patients who underwent PCI and improved the predictive ability of the GRACE risk score based prognostic models.

Diagnostic performance of novel inflammatory biomarkers based on ratios of laboratory indicators for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

INTRODUCTION

There is few effective biomarkers for diagnosing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in clinical practice. This study was aimed to investigate the predictive ability of novel inflammatory biomarkers, including the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), for NAFLD.

METHODS

A total of 4465 outpatients diagnosed with NAFLD and 3683 healthy controls were enrolled between May 2016 and November 2021 from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and anthropometric and laboratory examination data were collected. The two-sample Mann-Whitney U test and binary logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the correlations between four inflammatory biomarkers and NAFLD. The areas under the curves (AUCs) of receiver operating characteristic were used to evaluate their predictive ability for NAFLD.

RESULTS

The MHR, NLR and LMR were higher in patients with NAFLD than in healthy controls (P<0.001), whereas the PLR was remarkably lower (P<0.001). The OR values of the MHR, NLR, PLR, and LMR were 1.599 (1.543-1.658), 1.250 (1.186-1.317), 0.987(0.986-0.988) and 1.111(1.083-1.139), respectively(P<0.001). After adjusting for confounding factors, MHR was still the most relevant risk factor for NAFLD compared with other inflammatory markers (P<0.001). The AUCs of the MHR, NLR, PLR, and LMR were as follows: 0.663 (0.651-0.675), 0.524 (0.512-0.537), 0.329 (0.318-0.341), and 0.543 (0.530-0.555), respectively (P<0.001). Furthermore, the diagnostic model combining the MHR with alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, creatinine, uric acid, and body mass index had the best AUC of 0.931 (0.925-0.936).

CONCLUSIONS

MHR was superior to NLR, PLR and LMR as an inflammatory biomarker in the prediction of NAFLD. When combined with relevant laboratory parameters, the MHR may improve the clinical noninvasive diagnosis of NAFLD.

Association of the Monocyte-to-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio With Diabetic Retinopathy

Background: Chronic inflammation in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an essential contributor to the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The monocyte–to–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (MHR) is a novel and simple measure related to inflammatory and oxidative stress status. However, little is known regarding the role of the MHR in evaluating the development of DR.

Methods: A total of 771 patients with T2DM and 607 healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. MHR determination and eye examination were performed. The association of MHR with the prevalence of DR in T2DM patients was analyzed.

Results: The MHR in patients with DR was significantly higher than that in both non-DR diabetic patients (P < 0.05) and healthy controls (P < 0.01). No significance was observed in the MHR of different DR severity grades. Moreover, the MHR was similar between patients with non-macular oedema and those with macular oedema. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that MHR was independently associated with the prevalence of DR in diabetic patients [odds ratio (OR) = 1.438, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.249–1.655, P < 0.01]. After additional stratification by HbA1c level and diabetic duration, the MHR was still independently associated with the prevalence of DR.

Conclusions: Our study suggests that the MHR can be used as a marker to indicate the prevalence of DR in patients with T2DM.

Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio as an independent risk factor for papillary thyroid carcinoma

Background

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is considered to be an inflammatory disease. This study aimed to investigate the association of monocyte to high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) with PTC.

Methods

Clinical parameters from 300 patients with PTC and 552 patients with benign thyroid nodule were compared. Serum renal function and liver enzymes, fasting plasma glucose, lipid profile, and blood cell count were measured.

Results

Patients with PTC had a higher MONO (p < 0.001) and MHR (p < 0.001). There was a step‐wise increase in the prevalence of PTC (p = 0.003) with the tertile of MHR. Logistic regression analysis revealed that MHR could be considered an independent risk factor (p < 0.001) in the case‐control study and the cohort study. Pearson correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis indicated that MHR was positively associated with neutrophil (NEU) and lymphocyte (LYM) count as well as neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Area under the curve (AUC) was 0.711. The optimal cutoff of MHR was 0.33 × 10⁹/mmol.

Conclusion

This study identifies novel evidence that patients with PTC have a higher MHR. MHR is an independent risk factor for PTC. These findings support the application of MHR to predict, diagnose, and evaluate the occurrence of PTC.

Association between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and bicuspid aortic valve degeneration

Background/aim

From a pathophysiological point of view, inflammation is thought to be more dominant in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis than tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) stenosis. Our study aimed to determine the association between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (MHR), a new inflammatory marker, and the speed of progression of stenosis and pathophysiology of BAV stenosis.

Materials and methods

A total of 210 severe aortic stenosis patients (70 consecutive BAV patients, 140 matched TAV patients) were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Clinical and echocardiographic data and laboratory results related to our research were collected retrospectively from the patients’ records. MHR was measured as the ratio of the absolute monocyte count to the HDL-C value.

Results

Seventy BAV (mean age: 72.0 ± 9.1 years, 42.9% female) and 140 TAV patients (mean age: 77.9 ± 8.3 years, 51.4% female) with severe aortic stenosis were enrolled in this study. There was no difference between the two groups in terms of another baseline demographic or clinic findings except age (P < 0.001). Monocyte count, hemoglobin level, mean platelet volume was significantly higher, and HDL-C level was significantly lower in the BAV group, while other lipid and CBC parameters were found to be similar. In the multivariate analysis, MHR (P = 0.005, 95% CI: 0.90–0.98) and, as expected, age (P = 0.001, 95% CI: 1.02–1.11) were found to be significant as the independent predictor of BAV, after adjusting for other risk factors.

Conclusion

Our study showed a significant correlation between increased MHR and BAV. MHR was determined as a significant independent predictor for the speed of progression and diagnosis of severe BAV stenosis in multivariate analysis.

The Role of Monocyte to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio in Prediction of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

Background: Chronic inflammatory disorders and dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are essential contributors to the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (MHR) is a novel and simple measure associated positively with the body inflammatory and oxidative stress status. However, little is known regarding the role of MHR in evaluating carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), a surrogate predictor of subsequent vascular events, especially in diabetic patients. Methods: A total of 494 patients with T2DM and 1,848 non-diabetic subjects were consecutively enrolled in study 1. Correlation between MHR and CIMT was compared between diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. In study 2, a total of 110 T2DM patients from study 1 with normal basal CIMT and a follow-up ultrasonography at 12 months were enrolled. The predictive role of MHR on CIMT progression in diabetic patients was analyzed. Results: In study 1, MHR was higher in patients with T2DM than non-diabetic subjects (p < 0.001). After adjustment for confounding risk factors, MHR remained correlated significantly with CIMT in diabetic (r = 0.172, p = 0.001) but not non-diabetic (r = 0.006, p = 0.813) subjects. Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that MHR is superior to traditional lipid parameters in association with elevated CIMT in diabetic patients. In study 2, MHR at baseline was positively correlated with change in CIMT (r = 0.313, p = 0.001). Basal MHR was independently associated with change in CIMT [β = 0.059, (95% CI: 0.012-0.105), p = 0.014] in multivariate linear regression analysis. Conclusions: Our study suggests that MHR is a convenient and effective measure in prediction of the presence and progression of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in patients with T2DM.

Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in patients with diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy

AIM

We investigated the relationship of monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) with diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy.

METHODS & RESULTS

A total of 220 diabetes mellitus patients and 70 healthy controls were enrolled. There was no difference in an MHR between normoalbuminuric diabetic patients and the healthy controls. The MHR in patients with diabetic nephropathy was significantly higher than that of both the normoalbuminuric diabetic patients and the healthy controls. There was a significant positive correlation between urine albumin to creatinine ratio and the MHR. In multivariate linear regression analysis, the MHR was independently correlated with urine albumin to creatinine ratio.  Conclusion: An increased MHR may be a biomarker for diabetic nephropathy.

Association of monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

AIM

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) and carotid atherosclerostic plaque in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

METHODS

A total of 214 SLE patients were divided into two groups according to the results of ultrasonic examination: carotid arterial atherosclerotic plaque groups and noncarotid arterial atherosclerosis groups.

RESULTS

The values of monocyte to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio (MHR) increase in carotid arterial atherosclerotic plaque groups compared with noncarotid arterial atherosclerosis groups (0.32 ± 0.18 vs 0.26 ± 0.15; p = 0.015). There was a significant correlation between MHR and carotid artery intima-media thickness (r = 0.228; p = 0.001) in patients with SLE.

CONCLUSION

Our study suggests that the values of MHR could be a marker to assess carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with SLE.

Evaluation of Monocyte to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio in the Presence and Severity of Metabolic Syndrome

Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a systemic inflammatory marker, and recently, it has been used quite commonly for the assessment of inflammation in cardiovascular disorders. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relevance of MHR as a marker to assess metabolic syndrome (MetS) and MetS severity in clinical practice. A total of 147 patients with MetS who were diagnosed according to National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria and 134 healthy controls, matched for age and gender, were included in our retrospective study. MHR values were 13.15 ± 6.07 for patients with MetS and 9.74 ± 5.24 for the control group. MHR values of the patients were found to be statistically significantly higher than the control group ( P < .0001). MHR showed a significantly positive correlation with the severity of MetS ( r = .429; P < .0001). When patients with MetS were assessed with MHR in the study population, receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis yielded a cutoff value of 9.36 with a sensitivity of 72%, a specificity of 61%, and a P value <.0001. In logistic regression analyses of MetS with several variables, MHR remained as an independent predictor of MetS (95% CI: 0.721-0.945, P = .005). MHR might be an available and useful inflammatory marker to evaluate patients with MetS and disease severity.
