Influence of smartphone game play on head flexion angle, muscle activity, and load at C7 among adolescents

BACKGROUND

Smartphones cause physiological problems due to inappropriate postures and extensive usage. India, being the second leading country with the highest number of smartphone users (492 million in 2021), has witnessed a significant rise in smartphone-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD).

OBJECTIVE

This study compared the effects of 60-min smartphone gameplay on head flexion angle, muscle activity, and loads at C7 on Indian adolescents.

METHODS

A subjective assessment was conducted on 1659 participants, of which, 40 young male adults aged between 20-28 years performed the experimental trial. Muscle (Sternocleidomastoid) activity, head flexion angle, and load acting at the neck (C7) were analyzed through postural assessment, pre-and post-subjective analysis.

RESULTS

Participants maintained an average of 28.46°±4.04° head flexion angle for more than 43 min (71%) in an hour while performing the task. The muscle activity increased to 23% (p < 0.001) of MVC at the end of the task compared to the beginning.

CONCLUSION

The results indicated a significant increase in muscle activity (1.61 times), spinal loads (4.6 times) and subjective discomfort (2.9 times) after prolonged smartphone usage. It is evident that various aspects (duration, posture, content) play a vital role in smartphone-related MSD and there is a potential risk of cervical spine problems. The increased loads reduce muscle stiffness and increase intervertebral disc pressure.

An investigation of an ergonomics intervention to affect neck biomechanics and pain associated with smartphone use

BACKGROUND

Neck discomfort and pronounced neck flexion have been associated with smartphone use.

OBJECTIVE

Eye glasses with a 90 deg prism in each lens were investigated as a potential intervention to reduce awkward head and neck postures during activities involving viewing the device.

METHODS

Sixteen smartphone users with neck pain and 9 asymptomatic users performed a texting task on a smartphone with and without the prism glasses, in sitting and standing postures in a laboratory setting.

RESULTS

Cervical erector spinae and upper trapezius muscle activity, head posture and motion, performance, discomfort and other subjective perceptions were assessed. Prism glasses reduced neck extensor muscle activity, neck flexion, and head tilt compared to the direct view. In the symptomatic group, the intervention produced less neck and shoulder discomfort compared to the direct view.

CONCLUSIONS

This intervention could offer an alternative way of interacting with a smartphone while texting in stationary postures, by reducing exposure to pronounced flexed neck and head posture commonly seen in users, and thereby could reduce neck discomfort associated with smartphone use.

The effect of mind-body exercise on the cervical spine mobility of people with neck discomfort: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

With the development of the economy and society, the pace of in-person work has gradually accelerated, resulting in longer and more intense work hours. Long-term and high-intensity work can lead to considerable discomfort in people's cervical spines.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to explore the effect of mind-body exercise intervention on the cervical spine mobility of people with neck discomfort through meta-analysis.

METHODS

This study's researchers will search a total of 5 research databases for data retrieval: China National Knowledge Infrastructure (from 1979), Web of Science (from 1950), PubMed (from 1965), Cochrane (from 1991), and EBSCO (from 1949) (Date of retrieval: March 10, 2021). Two authors will independently search literature records, scan titles, abstracts, and full texts, collect data, and assess materials for risk of bias. Stata14.0 software will be used for the data analysis.

RESULTS

The current study is a systematic review and meta-analysis program with no results. Data analysis will be completed after the program has been completed.

DISCUSSION

There is potential evidence that exercise can have a positive effect on the cervical spine mobility of people with cervical spine discomfort. In addition, direct evidence of the benefits of mind-body exercise intervention may be more important.

Short sleep and chronic neck and shoulder discomfort in nurses

OBJECTIVE

Short sleep duration is common among nurses. Sleep restriction has been associated with musculoskeletal discomfort. However, studies on the effect of short sleep duration on chronic neck and shoulder discomfort in nurses have been lacking. The aim of this study was to determine whether short sleep duration is related to chronic neck and shoulder discomfort.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional survey of female nurses in secondary referral health centers in Taiwan. We applied stratified sampling based on region (north, central, south, and east) to select representative centers for this study. A self-administered structured questionnaire, including demographic data, the psychological working environment, and musculoskeletal symptoms, was administered to nurses. Multiple logistic regression and population attributable risk analyses were performed to assess the effect of average sleeping hours per working day on chronic neck and shoulder discomfort.

RESULTS

A total of 1602 (78.9%) questionnaires were eligible for final analysis. The prevalence rates of chronic neck and shoulder discomfort were 33.9% and 34.7%, respectively. Population attributable risk estimation revealed that a sleep duration of <7 hours per working day was the most crucial factor for chronic neck and shoulder discomfort in the nurses, accounting for 8.8% of chronic neck discomfort and 8.6% of chronic shoulder discomfort respectively.

CONCLUSION

Our study found that sleep duration on working days was associated with chronic neck and shoulder discomfort in female nurses. Further interventions are warranted for maintaining nurses' sleep hygiene.
