Rydberg State Single-Mode Polariton Lasing with Ultralow Threshold via Symmetry Engineering

Symmetry plays an essential role in the fundamental properties of a physical system. In this work, we report on the realization of tunable single-mode polariton lasing from highly excited Rydberg states via symmetry engineering. By breaking the symmetry of the polaritonic wave function through potential wells and controlling the spatial overlap between the gain region and the eigen mode, we are able to generate single-mode polariton lasing, reversibly and dynamically, from quantized polariton states. Increasing the asymmetry of the potential well, single-mode lasing can be achieved even for the highly excited Rydberg state with a principle quantum number of N = 14. Moreover, as a result of the excellent reservoir-eigen mode overlap and efficient spatial confinement, the threshold of lasing can be reduced up to 6 orders of magnitude, compared with those conventional pumping schemes. Our results present a new strategy toward the realization of thresholdless polariton lasing with dynamical tunability.

Lanthanide Upconverted Microlasing: Microlasing Spanning Full Visible Spectrum to Near-Infrared under Low Power, CW Pumping

The miniaturization of lasers holds promise in ultradense data storage and biosensing, but greater pump power is required to reach the lasing thresholds to overcome increased optical losses with reduced resonant cavity sizes. Here, the whispering galley mode (WGM) of Yb³⁺ /Tm³⁺ doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) coupled with microcavities (≈5 µm) is used to achieve ultralow threshold upconverted lasing at 800 nm with excitation fluences as low as 4 W cm^-2 . The continuous-wave (CW) upconverted lasing, with a Q factor on the order of 10³ , can remain stable for more than 6 h. In addition, ultralow threshold upconverted microlasers spanning the full visible spectrum from Yb³⁺ /Er³⁺ , Yb³⁺ /Ho³⁺ , and Yb³⁺ /Tm³⁺ doped UCNPs are obtained with the same WGM cavity design. These upconverted microlasers working under low power CW 980 nm laser will enable promising applications in biosensing and imaging.

Intrinsic Ultralow-Threshold Laser Action from Rationally Molecular Design of Metal-Organic Framework Materials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are superior for multiple applications including drug delivery, sensing, and gas storage because of their tunable physiochemical properties and fascinating architectures. Optoelectronic application of MOFs is difficult because of their porous geometry and conductivity issues. Recently, a few optoelectronic devices have been fabricated by a suitable design of integrating MOFs with other materials. However, demonstration of laser action arising from MOFs as intrinsic gain media still remains challenging, even though some studies endeavor on encapsulating luminescence organic laser dyes into the porous skeleton of MOFs to achieve laser action. Unfortunately, the aggregation of such unstable laser dyes causes photoluminescence quenching and energy loss, which limits their practical application. In this research, unprecedently, we demonstrated ultralow-threshold (∼13 nJ/cm²) MOF laser action by a judicious choice of metal nodes and organic linkers during synthesis of MOFs. Importantly, we also demonstrated that the white random lasing from the beautiful microflowers of organic linkers possesses a porous network, which is utilized to synthesize the MOFs. The highly luminescent broad-band organic linker 1,4-NDC, which itself exhibits a strong white random laser, is used not only to achieve the stimulated emission in MOFs but also to reduce the lasing threshold. Such white lasing has multiple applications from bioimaging to the recently developed versatile Li-Fi technology. In addition, we showed that the smooth facets of MOF microcrystals can show Fabry-Perot resonant cavities having a high quality factor of ∼10³ with excellent photostability. Our unique discovery of stable, nontoxic, high-performance MOF laser action will open up a new route for the development of new optoelectronic devices.

Grain Boundary Induced Ultralow Threshold Random Laser in a Single GaTe Flake

Random lasing is a lasing phenomenon realized in random media, and it has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. An essential requirement for strong random lasing is to achieve strong and recurrent scattering among grain boundaries of a disordered structure. Herein, we report a random laser (RL) based on individual polycrystalline GaTe microflakes (MFs) with a lasing threshold of 4.15 kW cm^-2, about 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the reported single GaN microwire random laser. The strongly enhanced light scattering and trapping benefit from the reduced grain size in the polycrystalline GaTe MF, resulting in a ultralow threshold. We also investigate the dependence of spatially localized cavities' dimension on the pumping intensity profile and temperature. The findings provide a feasible route to realize RL with a low threshold and small size, opening up a new avenue in fulfilling many potential optoelectronic applications of RL.
