Fabrication of a Microcavity Prepared by Remote Epitaxy over Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide

Advances in epitaxy have enabled the preparation of high-quality material architectures consisting of incommensurate components. Remote epitaxy based on lattice transparency of atomically thin graphene has been intensively studied for cost-effective advanced device manufacturing and heterostructure formation. However, remote epitaxy on nongraphene two-dimensional (2D) materials has rarely been studied even though it has a broad and immediate impact on various disciplines, such as many-body physics and the design of advanced devices. Herein, we report remote epitaxy of ZnO on monolayer MoS₂ and the realization of a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) cavity composed of a single crystalline ZnO nanorod and monolayer MoS₂. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations revealed that the nongraphene 2D material interacted with overgrown and substrate layers and also exhibited lattice transparency. The WGM cavity embedding monolayer MoS₂ showed enhanced luminescence of MoS₂ and multimodal emission.

Solution-processed whispering-gallery-mode microsphere lasers based on colloidal CsPbBr3perovskite nanocrystals

Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as attractive gain materials for solution-processed microlasers. Despite the recent surge of reports in this field, it is still challenging to develop low-cost perovskite NC-based microlasers with high performance. Herein, we demonstrate low-threshold, spectrally tunable lasing from ensembles of CsPbBr₃NCs deposited on silica microspheres. Multiple whispering-gallery-mode lasing is achieved from individual NC/microspheres with a low threshold of ∼3.1μJ cm^-2and cavity quality factor of ∼1193. Through time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, electron-hole plasma recombination is elucidated as the lasing mechanism. By tuning the microsphere diameter, the desirable single-mode lasing is successfully achieved. Remarkably, the CsPbBr₃NCs display durable room-temperature lasing under ∼10⁷shots of pulsed laser excitation, substantially exceeding the stability of conventional colloidal NCs. These CsPbBr₃NC-based microlasers can be potentially useful in photonic applications.

Analysis of Kerr Noise in Angular-Rate Sensing Based on Mode Splitting in a Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microresonator

Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have shown their potential in high-precision gyroscopes because of their small volume and high-quality factors. However, Kerr noise can always be the limit of accuracy. Angular-rate sensing based on mode splitting treats backscattering as a measured signal, which can induce mode splitting, while it is considered as a main source of noise in conventional resonator optical gyroscopes. Meanwhile, mode splitting also provides superior noise suppression owing to its self-reference scheme. Kerr noise in this scheme has not been defined and solved yet. Here, the mechanism of the Kerr noise in the measurement is analyzed and the mathematical expressions are derived, indicating the relationship between the Kerr noise and the output of the system. The influence caused by Kerr noise on the output is simulated and discussed. Simulations show that the deviation of the splitting caused by Kerr noise is 1.913 × 10⁻⁵ Hz at an angular rate of 5 × 10⁶ °/s and the corresponding deviation of the angular rate is 9.26 × 10⁻⁹ °/s. It has been proven that angular-rate sensing based on mode splitting offers good suppression of Kerr noise.

Covert Photonic Barcodes Based on Light Controlled Acidichromism in Organic Dye Doped Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microdisks

Photonic barcodes with a small footprint have demonstrated a great value for multiplexed high-throughput bioassays and tracking systems. Attempts to develop coding technology tend to focus on the generation of featured barcodes both with high coding capacity and accurate recognition. In this work, a strategy to design photonic barcodes is proposed based on whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) modulations in dye-doped microdisk resonant cavities, where each modulated photoluminescence spectrum constitutes the fingerprint of a corresponding microdisk. The WGM-based barcodes can achieve infinite encoding capacity through tuning the dimensions of the microdisks. These photonic barcodes can be well disguised and decoded based on the light controlled proton release and acidichromism of the organic materials, which are essential to fulfill the functions of anti-counterfeiting, information security, and so on. The results will pave an avenue to new types of flexible WGM-based components for optical data recording and security labels.

Robust Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microbubble Lasers from Colloidal Quantum Dots

Microlasers hold great promise for the development of photonics and optoelectronics. Among the discovered optical gain materials, colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have been recognized as the most appealing candidate due to the facile emission tunability and solution processability. However, to date, it is still challenging to develop CQD-based microlasers with low cost yet high performance. Moreover, the poor long-term stability of CQDs remains to be the most critical issue, which may block their laser aspirations. Herein, we developed a unique but generic approach to forming a novel type of a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microbubble laser from the hybrid CQD/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites. The formation mechanism of the microbubbles was unraveled by recording the drying process of the nanocomposite droplets. Interestingly, these microbubbles naturally serve as the high-quality WGM laser resonators. By simply changing the CQDs, the lasing emission can be tuned across the whole visible spectral range. Importantly, these microbubble lasers exhibit unprecedented long-term stability (over one year), sufficient for practical applications. As a proof-of-concept, the potential of water vapor sensing was demonstrated. Our results represent a significant advance in microlasers based on the advantageous CQDs and may offer new possibilities for photonics and optoelectronics.
