Abstract
OBJECTIVE The influence of various aging protocols, representing and accelerating influences present in the dental context, on possible changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of thermoplastics was investigated. In order to minimize the complexity of the systems, first pure polymers and then later the equivalent dental polymeric materials were analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pure polymers (Poly(methyl methacrylate) - PMMA, Polyoxymethylene homopolymer - POM-H, Polyether ether ketone - PEEK, Nylon 12 - PA12, Polypropylene - PP) were analyzed before as well as after applying different aging protocols relevant to the oral environment (ethanol, thermocycling, alkaline and acidic setting) by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermoanalytical parameters used were glass transition temperature (Tg), melting peak and crystallization peak temperature (Tpm, Tpc) and decomposition behavior. In a second step selected commercially available dental products (Telio CAD - PMMAD, Zirlux Acetal - POMD, Juvora Natural Dental Disc - PEEKD) aged by the protocol that previously showed strong effects were examined and additionally tested for changes in their Vickers and Martens hardness by Mann-Whitney-U test. RESULTS The combinations of pure polymers and viable aging protocols analyzed within this study were identified via TGA or DSC as PA12 & thermocycling, POM-H & denture cleanser/lactic acid/ethanol, PP & lactic acid. The dental polymeric materials PMMAD and POMD due to aging in lactic acid showed slight but significantly (p < 0.01) reduced Vickers and partly Martens hardness. PEEK showed the greatest material resistance within this study.

Abstract
Group living may entail local resource competition (LRC) which can be reduced if the birth sex ratio (BSR) is biased towards members of the dispersing sex who leave the group and no longer compete locally with kin. In primates, the predicted relationship between dispersal and BSR is generally supported although data for female dispersal species are rare and primarily available from captivity. Here, we present BSR data for Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) at the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand (N = 104). In this population, nearly all natal females dispersed, while natal males stayed or formed new groups nearby. The slower reproductive rate in larger groups suggests that food can be a limiting resource. In accordance with LRC, significantly more females than males were born (BSR 0.404 males/all births) thus reducing future competition with kin. This bias was similar in 2-year-olds (no sex-differential mortality). It became stronger in adults, supporting our impression of particularly fierce competition among males. To better evaluate the importance of BSR, more studies should report sex ratios throughout the life span, and more data for female dispersal primates need to be collected, ideally for multiple groups of different sizes and for several years.

Abstract
For most herbivorous animals, group-living appears to incur a high cost by intensifying feeding competition. These costs raise the question of how gregariousness (i.e., the tendency to aggregate) could have evolved to such an extent in taxa such as anthropoid primates and ungulates. When attempting to test the potential benefits and costs, previous foraging models demonstrated that group-living might be beneficial by lowering variance in intake, but that it reduces overall foraging success. However, these models did not fully account for the fact that gregariousness has multiple experiences and can vary in relation to ecological variables and foraging competition. Here, we present an agent-based model for testing how ecological variables impact the costs and benefits of gregariousness. In our simulations, primate-like agents forage on a variable resource landscape while maintaining spatial cohesion with conspecifics to varying degrees. The agents' energy intake rate, daily distance traveled, and variance in energy intake were recorded. Using Morris Elementary Effects sensitivity analysis, we tested the sensitivity of 10 model parameters, of which 2 controlled gregarious behavior and 8 controlled food resources, including multiple aspects of temporal and spatial heterogeneity. We found that, while gregariousness generally increased feeding competition, the costs of gregariousness were much lower when resources were less variable over time (i.e., when calorie extraction was slow and resource renewal was frequent). We also found that maintaining proximity to other agents resulted in lower variance in energy intake when resources were more variable over time. Thus, it appears that the costs and benefits of gregariousness are strongly influenced by the temporal characteristics of food resources, giving insight into the pressures that shaped the evolution of sociality and group living, including in our own lineage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Raising offspring imposes energetic costs, especially for female mammals. Consequently, seasons favoring high energy intake and sustained positive energy balance often result in a conception peak. Factors that may weaken this coordinated effect include premature offspring loss and adolescent subfertility. Furthermore, seasonal ingestion of phytochemicals may facilitate conception peaks. We examined these factors and potential benefits of a conception peak (infant survival and interbirth interval) in Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus). MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were collected at Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand (78 conceptions). We estimated periods of high energy intake based on fruit and young leaf feeding and via monthly energy intake rates. Phytochemical intake was based on fecal progestin. We examined seasonality (circular statistics and cox proportional hazard models) and compared consequences of timing (infant survival and interbirth intervals, t-test, and Fisher exact test). RESULTS Conceptions occurred in all months but peaked from May to August. This peak coincided with high fecal progestin rather than presumed positive energy balance. Primipara conceived significantly later than multipara. Neither infant survival nor interbirth intervals were related to the timing of conception. DISCUSSION Periods of high energy intake may not exist and would not explain the conception peak in this population. However, the presumed high intake of phytochemicals was tightly linked to the conception peak. Timing conceptions to the peak season did not provide benefits, suggesting that the clustering of conceptions may be a mere by-product of phytochemical intake. To confirm this conclusion, seasonal changes in phytochemical intake and hormone levels need to be studied more directly.

Abstract
AbstractAnimals can form dominance relationships that vary from highly unequal, or despotic, to egalitarian, and this variation likely impacts the fitness of individuals. How and why these differences in relationships and fitness exist among groups, populations, and species has been the subject of much debate. Here, we investigated the influence of two major factors: (1) spatial resource distribution and (2) the presence or absence of winner-loser effects. To determine the effects of these factors, we built an agent-based model that represented 10 agents directly competing over food resources on a simple landscape. By varying the food distribution and using either asymmetry of strength or experience, we contrasted four scenarios from which we recorded attack decisions, fight outcomes, and individual energy intake to calculate dominance hierarchy steepness and energetic skew. Surprisingly, resource distribution and winner-loser effects did not have the predicted effects on hierarchy steepness. However, skew in energy intake arose when resources were distributed heterogeneously, despite hierarchy steepness frequently being higher in the homogeneous resource scenarios. Thus, this study confirms some decades-old predictions about feeding competition but also casts doubt on the ability to infer energetic consequences from observations of agonistic interactions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the current study is to investigate the influence of mechanical stress as well as cleaning agents on the performance of various polyether ether ketone (PEEK) inserts for implant-retained overdentures (IOD). MATERIALS AND METHODS Three different standard PEEK inserts were subjected to rapid artificial aging through storage in chemical denture cleaning agents (acetic acid, sodium hypochlorite, or sparkling denture cleaner) as well as demineralized water. The pre-aged PEEK inserts were then placed in unilateral IOD and subjected to 200,000 chewing loads (5 kg ~ 50 N), with 5000 thermal cycles (5/55°C), and 1100 removal/insertion cycles (vertical movement 2 mm). RESULTS For all the PEEK inserts, the retention forces decreased significantly with an increasing number of mechanical load cycles and after exposure to all the cleaning agents. PEEK inserts aged by exposure to chemical cleaning agents showed a significantly higher decline in retention force than the inserts stored in water. Confocal laser scanning microscopy indicated that the decline in retention force might be caused by wear on the internal insert surface in contact with the patrix. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the application of chemical cleaning agents accelerates the decline in the retention forces of PEEK retentive inserts in IODs.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D)-printed occlusal splints are becoming more prevalent in the treatment of tooth substance loss due to their fast and cost-effective production. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate whether the mechanical properties (tensile strength-TS, modulus of elasticity in tension-ME, and Vickers hardness-HV) vary between the materials (printed dimethacrylate-based resins: Keyprint KeySplint soft-KEY, Luxaprint Ortho Plus-LUX, V-Print splint-VPR, printed methacrylate-based resins Freeprint splint 2.0-FRE, and milled methacrylate-based material, CLEAR splint-CLE), and the influence of aging processes (extraoral storage conditions and nightly or daily use) was examined. The printed methacrylate-based resins (FRE, LUX, and VPR) had much higher TS (43.7-48.5 MPa compared to 12.3-13.3 MPa), higher ME (2.01-2.37 GPa compared to 0.43-0.72 GPa), and higher HV (11.8-15.0 HV compared to 3.3-3.5 HV) than both of the methacrylate-based resins (KEY and CLE) after the production process. Although the TS, ME, and HV of the printed dimethacrylate resins (FRE, LUX, and VPR) decreased significantly under humid conditions with possibly elevated temperatures (thermocycling as well as 37 °C), these mechanical properties were significantly higher than both methacrylate-based resins (KEY and CLE). Therefore, printed dimethacrylate resins should be used rather than methacrylate-based resins for high expected masticatory forces, low wall thicknesses, or very long wearing times (≥6 months).

Abstract
Denture prostheses are an ideal and extensive reservoir for microorganisms to attach to their surfaces. The aim of the study was to elucidate interactions between materials for the fabrication of denture bases and the attachment of microorganisms, focusing on respiratory pathogens and Candida species. Specimens (6 mm × 1 mm) with a standardized surface roughness (Sa = 0.1 µm) were prepared from heat-pressed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), CAD/CAM-processed PMMA, and CAD/CAM-processed polyether ether ketone (PEEK). The specimens were randomly placed in the vestibular areas of complete upper dentures in seven patients and were removed either after 24 h without any oral hygiene measures or after a period of four weeks. The microorganisms adherent to the surface of the specimens were cultivated and subsequently analyzed using mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The means and standard deviations were calculated, and the data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post-hoc test where appropriate (α = 0.05). There was a significant increase (p ≤ 0.004) in the total bacterial counts (CFU/mL) between the first (24 h) and the second (four weeks) measurements. Regarding quantitative microbiological analyses, no significant differences between the various materials were identified. Respiratory microorganisms were detected in all samples at both measurement time points, with a large variance between different patients. Only after four weeks, Candida species were identified on all materials but not in all participants. Candida species and respiratory microorganisms accumulate on various denture base resins. While no significant differences were identified between the materials, there was a tendency towards a more pronounced accumulation of microorganisms on conventionally processed PMMA.

Abstract
Chipping of implant-supported molar crowns (iSCs) is a frequently reported complication. This study aimed to investigate the in-vitro aging and fracture resistance of iSCs with a CAD/CAM resin composite veneer structure fabricated with the Rapid Layer Technology (RLT) approach. Eight iSCs per group were fabricated by using two different CAD/CAM resin composites (Shofu Block HC: SH; Grandio blocs: GB) for veneer structures, and zirconia (ZrO2), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and cobalt-chromium (CoCr; control) as framework materials. The surfaces to be bonded were sandblasted, cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and a coupling agent was applied. A self-adhesive resin luting composite was used to adhesively lute the veneer structures to the frameworks. The crowns were semi-permanently cemented to the abutments. After storage in deionized water, iSCs were loaded in a chewing simulator (TCML, 10,000 thermal cycles 5 °C to 55 °C for 20 s, 1.2 million, loading force 50 N). Four ZrO2 and one CoCr crown did not survive the TCML. The fracture force was determined after 24 h storage in deionized water and yielded values of ≥974 N. Lowest fracture forces were yielded in the PEEK-SH group in comparison to CoCr or ZrO2 groups (p ≤ 0.031). For identical framework materials, no significant influence of the veneering material was observed. All PEEK-GB frameworks fractured, and chipping occurred for ZrO2-SH and all CoCr frameworks. PEEK-SH and ZrO2-GB presented both chipping and framework fractures. Within the limitations of this in-vitro study, the RLT with a CAD/CAM resin composite veneer structure might be a promising approach to veneer iSCs. Yet, the choice of the CAD/CAM resin composite and of the framework material determine the fracture resistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of dental prophylaxis cleaning procedures and artificial aging on veneers in human teeth. The external marginal and internal tooth veneer as well as the restoration surfaces were examined. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two extracted premolars were restored with resin-based composite (RBC) and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) veneers. Artificial aging by alternating thermocycling and subsequent prophylaxis procedure (glycine-based powder air polishing or ultrasonic scaling) was conducted for five consecutive cycles. The external marginal interface was examined by height profile measurements and the internal interface was investigated using micro X-ray computed tomography. In addition, the surface texture of the veneer surface was analyzed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. RESULTS The application of both prophylaxis procedures resulted in a deepening of the marginal interface (10 µm ± 8 µm) for materials. Furthermore, the internal interface of PICN restorations showed marginal gaps after both treatments and artificial aging (16 µm ± 3 µm). In contrast to the RBC specimens, a significant increase in surface roughness was identified for PICN veneers after ultrasonic scaling. CONCLUSIONS The marginal and internal interface regions in veneers fabricated from PICN and RBC were affected by prophylaxis procedures. Furthermore, it may result in increased veneer surface roughness, especially in PICN and after ultrasonic scaling, which might affect bioadhesion and longevity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE After dental prophylaxis procedures, examination of the marginal and the internal interface as well as the veneer surface provides a precise insight into damage mechanisms and offers an assessment of longevity.

Abstract
A correct silanization time is essential for successful surface functionalization and sufficient bonding to dental ceramics. The shear bond strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate (LDS) and feldspar (FSC) ceramics and luting resin composite was investigated with respect to different silanization times, taking into account the physical properties of the individual surfaces. The SBS test was performed with a universal testing machine, and the fracture surfaces were evaluated by stereomicroscopy. The surface roughness of the prepared specimens was analyzed after etching. Changes in surface properties due to surface functionalization were evaluated by surface free energy (SFE) via contact angle measurement. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to determine the chemical binding. The roughness and SBS of the control group (no silane, etched) were higher for FSC than for LDS. Regarding the SFE, the dispersive fraction increased and the polar fraction decreased after silanization. FTIR confirmed the presence of silane on the surfaces. The SBS of LDS showed a significant increase from 5 to 15 s, depending on the silane and luting resin composite. For FSC, cohesive failure was observed for all samples. For LDS specimens, a silane application time of 15 to 60 s is recommended. Based on clinical conditions, no difference between the silanization times was observed for FSC specimens, indicating that etching alone produces sufficient bonding.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study examined Vickers hardness as well as surface characteristics of different computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin composites prior to and after storage in various media. MATERIALS AND METHODS CAD/CAM resin composite blocks (Grandio Blocs (GB), Lava Ultimate (LU), Brilliant Crios (BC), Cerasmart (GC), Shofu Block HC (SB), Tetric CAD (TC), Luxacam Composite (LC); incl. different translucency variants) were prepared, polished and surface free energy was determined. The specimens were divided into four groups: dry conditions for 24 h (25 °C), demineralized water (37 °C), Pepsi Cola (37 °C) and 75% ethanol (37 °C). After seven and 28 days of storage, Vickers hardness was determined. Surface roughness was measured after the entire storage period. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Vickers hardness was in the range of about 150 HV for GB, around 115 HV for LU, and 80-100 HV for BC, GC, SB, TC and LC. Only minor differences (total: 50.2 (6.4)-56.2 (3.2) mN/m) in surface free energy could be detected. No relationship was observed between surface free energy and filler content. However, a correlation between filler content and Vickers hardness was evident. Artificial aging caused a decrease of Vickers hardness (up to -40 HV or 35%) depending on storage media, duration and material. The changes in surface texture after immersion in different media were below a value of ΔSa = 0.015 µm. CONCLUSION Artificial aging of CAD/CAM resin composites leads to a significant decrease of Vickers hardness for most materials, while only small changes in surface roughness were identified.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare composition, microstructure, and mechanical strength of current multilayer zirconia blanks. METHODS Bar shaped specimens were made from several layers of multilayer zirconia blanks (Cercon ht ML, Dentsply Sirona, US; Katana Zirconia YML, Kuraray, J;SHOFU Disk ZR Lucent Supra, Shofu, J; priti multidisc ZrO2 Multi Translucent, Pritidenta, D; IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime, Ivoclar Vivadent, FL). Flexural strength was determined in a three-point bending test on extra-thin bars. X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinement was used to assess crystal structure and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging to visualize the microstructure of each material and layer. RESULTS Mean flexural strength varied between 467.5 ± 97.5 MPa (top layer, IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime) and 898.0 ± 188.5 MPa (bottom layer, Cercon ht ML) with significant (p ≤ 0.055) differences between the individual layers. XRD indicated 5Y-TZP for enamel-layers, 3Y-TZP for dentine-layers, individual mixtures of 3Y-TZP, 4Y-TZP, or 5 Y-TZP for intermediate layers. SEM analysis showed grain sizes between approx. 0.15 and 4 µm. Grain size tended to decrease from top to bottom layers. SIGNIFICANCE The investigated blanks differ predominantly in the intermediate layers. In addition to dimensioning of restorations, the milling position in the blanks must also be taken into account when using multilayer zirconia as restorative material.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the retention behaviour (pull-off force include adhesive remnant index = ARI) as well as translucency of various temporary luting cements and use microstructure elucidation methods to formulate explanatory approaches to their mode of action. The retention force of the temporary luting cements Provicol QM Plus (P+), Provicol QM Aesthetic (Pae), Bifix Temp (BiT), and as a reference a glass ionomer cement Meron (M) with a direct (Structur 3/S3) or an indirect (Structure CAD/SCAD) resin-based composite restauration was investigated after accelerated aging (thermocycling). Additional investigation of the physical properties was performed regarding to translucency and surface free energy. The microstructure was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and micro X-ray computed tomography. All tested temporary luting cements showed different pull-off forces in the range between 3.0 and 16.8 N in combination with S3 or SCAD after thermocycling. Only BiT with S3 showed pull-off forces of 129.2 N and complete retention on the restoration (ARI = 0), which was significant (p < .001) to all other samples. High translucency (BiT > Pae > M > P+) was observed for materials with lower crystalline content and low residual mass (usally resulting from higher organic content). M showed the highest surface free energy with a predominantly polar fraction, while BiT had a predominantly dispersive fraction. The highest porosity was observed in the coronal region of the restoration. The results suggest that translucency of temporary luting cements can be increased with higher organic and lower cryristall content. All combinations of cements and temporary restorations (direct/indirect; with the exception of BiT/S3) showed pull-off forces below 17 N (equivalent to a weight force of ∼1.7 kg), which allows manual detachment of the restoration by the dentist.

Abstract
Male-female agonism varies throughout the primate order with males often dominating females, especially in sexually dimorphic species. While intersexual agonism has been attributed to sexually coercive contexts, it can also occur for other reasons and intersexual dominance may be influenced by the adult sex ratio. If the proportion of males is high, certain males will regularly lose against other males. Loser-effects may then pave the way for some females to dominate these males, an effect that has been described in a few primate species. Here we investigated the frequency, general style, and context of agonism among gray langurs (Semnopithecus spp.). Data were collected at two study sites, at Jodhpur, India (one group), and at Ramnagar, Nepal (two groups). The adult sex ratio varied between 0.077 and 1.000 males to females. At both sites, data on agonistic interactions (aggression and submission) were collected in continuous focal animal and ad libitum sampling techniques during 1,945 contact hours (including 1,220 focal animal hours, total). Although aggression intensity was low, high directional consistency and the rare occurrence of counteraggression suggested a despotic dominance style, a likely prerequisite for dominance effects based on adult sex ratio. Aggression by females against males was very rare and mainly occurred in the defense of offspring. We found little evidence for partial female dominance regardless of adult sex ratio. In a few cases in which a female had a higher dominance index than a male, she did not dominate this male in dyadic encounters. Agonism by males directed at females occurred mainly in a feeding context while male policing and a sexual context were both rare. The latter was mostly restricted to females after they had harassed a sexual interaction or after they had behaved proceptively toward a male. Our study suggests that across species the effect of adult sex ratio on female dominance might be more variable than previously suggested. The fact that most agonism between males and females occurred over food identifies intersexual feeding competition as a new research avenue with potentially important consequences for existing ideas on the costs and benefits of group life and composition.

Abstract
Acid resistance of CAD/CAM resin composites. Erosion-related tooth surface loss is closely related to acid exposure, such as contact with acidic beverages or disease-related reflux. As a result, dental restorations in affected patients are also exposed to acids, which indicates that the performance and longevity of a dental restoration is impacted by the acid resistance of the individually employed restorative materials. However, unlike for ceramic materials, the acid resistance of CAD/CAM resin composites is not commonly evaluated by the manufacturers, and no standardised test methods have yet been established. Against this background, the present in vitro study aimed to examine the long-term resistance of CAD/CAM resin composites (Brilliant Crios, Cerasmart, Grandio blocs, Lava Ultimate, Shofu Block HC) against three acidic media (tonic water, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid) as well as demineralized water and to investigate potential damage mechanisms. Changes in surface roughness (Sa) were detected by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and changes in surface hardness were measured using Vickers hardness (HV). The damage mechanisms were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and micro X-ray computer tomography (µXCT). For each material, few changes in either Sa or HV were identified for at least one of the different media; for Cerasmart, the sharpest deterioration in surface properties was observed. SEM–EDS revealed leaching of barium, aluminium, and titanium from fillers in a 2 µm zone on the rough but not on the polished surface of the specimen. Within the limitations of the current study, it can be concluded that polished CAD/CAM resin composites can be recommended for clinical use in patients with erosive conditions.

Abstract
This study evaluated the pull-off force between titanium abutments and zirconia crowns that were bonded using four different cements and two abutment heights (AHs). In total, 24 titanium abutments (3-mm AH: n = 12; 5-mm AH: n = 12; taper: 7.5 degrees) and 24 zirconia crowns were designed, manufactured, cemented with one of four dental cements (one temporary, two semi-permanent, one permanent), stored in water for 24 hours, and thermocycled (37,500 cycles, equal to ~4 years in vivo). The pull-off force needed to separate the abutment and crown in each combination was determined eight times per combination of cement type and abutment height. Statistical analysis was conducted at a significance level of P < .05. The permanent self-adhesive composite cement showed a high pull-off force with a risk for crown fracture (mean: 381 N for 3-mm AH; 617 N for 5-mm AH). In contrast, the temporary zinc-oxide cement showed frequent premature decementation after thermocycling (mean: 14 N with 3-mm AH; 28 N with 5-mm AH). Both semi-permanent methacrylate-based cements ranked between the other cements (mean: 31 N/37 N for 3-mm AH; 120 N/72 N for 5-mm AH). Statistically significant differences were found between all cements (ANOVA P < .001). The abutment heights differed significantly for all cements (P < .005) except for the temporary zinc-oxide cement. Methacrylate-based cements were the most reliable cements for semi-permanent mounting of zirconia crowns on titanium abutments. They provide sufficient retention to avoid unintended loosening and are weak enough to remove the crown without causing damage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the fracture behavior of cantilever fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated from 3Y-TZP, 4Y-TZP, or 5Y-TZP zirconia. METHOD AND MATERIALS Posterior cantilever FDPs (three groups, each n = 16) were digitally designed and milled. After sintering, eight specimens/group were stored in demineralized water for 72 hours; eight specimens/group were subjected to accelerated aging using chewing simulation with thermal cycling (1,200,000 × 50 N; 2 × 3,000 × 5°C/55°C; H2O, 2 minutes/cycle) and finally stored in demineralized water for 24 hours. The cantilever FDPs were then statically loaded to failure to determine fracture load. Phase transformation towards the monoclinic phase was controlled with x-ray diffractometry. RESULTS One failure was identified after accelerated aging in the 5Y-TZP group. Fracture load decreased with increasing yttria content and decreasing bending strength. Accelerated aging using chewing simulation with thermal cycling caused a significant decline in fracture load. All FDPs failed in the area of the prepared tooth and in proximity to the cantilever, where the largest bending moment occurred. The yttria content had no influence on the type of fracture. With increasing yttria content, the relation between deformation and fracture load decreased only slightly. On the surface of FDPs that had been subjected to chewing simulation, no phase transformation towards the monoclinic phase (eg, low temperature degradation) was detected. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of a laboratory study, the data indicate that 3Y-, 4Y-, and 5Y-TZP may be employed as material for the fabrication of permanent posterior cantilever FDPs. Abstract
Significance: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are well known to promote innate immune responses during and in the absence of microbial infections. However, excessive or prolonged exposure to ROS provokes innate immune signaling dysfunction and contributes to the pathogenesis of many autoimmune diseases. The relatively high basal expression of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) in innate immune cells renders them prone to activation in response to minor intrinsic or extrinsic ROS misbalances in the absence of pathogens. Critical Issues: A prominent source of ROS are mitochondria, which are also major inter-organelle hubs for innate immunity activation, since most PRRs and downstream receptor molecules are directly located either at mitochondria or at mitochondria-associated membranes. Due to their ancestral bacterial origin, mitochondria can also act as quasi-intrinsic self-microbes that mimic a pathogen invasion and become a source of danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that triggers innate immunity from within. Recent Advances: The release of mitochondrial DAMPs correlates with mitochondrial metabolism changes and increased generation of ROS, which can lead to the oxidative modification of DAMPs. Recent studies suggest that ROS-modified mitochondrial DAMPs possess increased, persistent immunogenicity. Future Directions: Herein, we discuss how mitochondrial DAMP release and oxidation activates PRRs, changes cellular metabolism, and causes innate immune response dysfunction by promoting systemic inflammation, thereby contributing to the onset or progression of autoimmune diseases. Abstract
Background: The influence of typical manufacturing regimes for producing fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) from yttria partly-stabilized zirconia polycrystals (3Y/4Y/5Y-TZP) on the phase composition is quantified. Methods: Fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) were designed using a CAD process and machined from different Y-TZP blanks from two manufacturers differing in yttria contents. Subsequent to sintering, the FDPs were glaze fired and air-blasted using alumina particles. Phase composition was determined with X-ray diffraction and quantified with Rietveld refinement. Results: The blanks from VITA Zahnfabrik (VITA YZ HT, VITA YZ ST, VITA YZ XT) and Dental Direct (DD Bio ZX2, DD cube ONE, DD cube X2) featured a rhombohedral portion with rather small crystallites and a small monoclinic portion for 3Y/4Y-TZPs, which increased after machining and disappeared after sintering. Glaze firing and air-blasting with alumina particles had no significant influence on the phase composition. Conclusion: The phase history of dental zirconia is revealed, which may have implications on further processing and aging of the FDP (e.g. low temperature degradation) in mouth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It seems to be commonly accepted that gestation length within the subfamily Colobinae lasts several weeks longer in the African tribe (Colobini) than in the Asian tribe (Presbytini) even though closely related taxa of similar body mass should have similar life histories. Suspecting problems with data provenance to cause the difference, we revisited the published records expecting similar gestation lengths in both tribes if based on vetted, accurate data. MATERIALS AND METHODS We compiled published gestation length data for Colobini and Presbytini, labeling them as "unspecified" (n = 16) if the primary reference could not be located, methods were not described, and/or conceptions, the beginning of gestation, were determined based on sporadic observations of mating. If conceptions were determined based on changing hormone levels or patterns of daily mating records, we labeled the data as "accurate" (n = 12). We analyzed the ln transformed data in a phylogenetic framework in relation to adult female body mass. RESULTS In the unspecified dataset, gestation length in the two tribes overlapped extensively and did not differ significantly. However, in the accurate dataset, gestation length was significantly shorter in Colobini (not longer, as previously assumed). DISCUSSION Data provenance had a strong impact on the comparison, reversing the relationship in gestation length in the two sister tribes. It remains to be determined why gestation lengths differ, whether, relative to the other primates, Colobini have a shortened gestation or Presbytini a lengthened gestation, and whether similar differences exist in other closely related taxa. Addressing these questions will require additional, broader, comparative analyses.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of X-rays used in micro X-ray computer tomography (µXCT) on the mechanical performance and microstructure of a variety of dental materials. Standardised bending beams (2 × 2 × 25 mm3) were forwarded to irradiation with an industrial tomograph. Using three-dimensional datasets, the porosity of the materials was quantified and flexural strength was investigated prior to and after irradiation. The thermal properties of irradiated and unirradiated materials were analysed and compared by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Single µXCT measurements led to a significant decrease in flexural strength of polycarbonate with acrylnitril-butadien-styrol (PC-ABS). No significant influence in flexural strength was identified for resin-based composites (RBCs), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and zinc phosphate cement (HAR) after a single irradiation by measurement. However, DSC results suggest that changes in the microstructure of PMMA are possible with increasing radiation doses (multiple measurements, longer measurements, higher output power from the X-ray tube). In summary, it must be assumed that X-ray radiation during µXCT measurement at high doses can lead to changes in the structure and properties of certain polymers.

Abstract
Arthropods (insects, spiders, etc.) can fulfill major nutritional requirements for primates, particularly in terms of proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Yet, for many primate species we know very little about the frequency and importance of arthropod consumption. Traditional methods for arthropod prey identification, such as behavioral observations and fecal dissections, offer limited taxonomic resolution and, as a result, underestimate true diversity. Metabarcoding arthropod DNA from primate fecal samples provides a promising but underused alternative. Here, we inventoried arthropod prey diversity in wild lemurs by sequencing two regions of the CO1 gene. Samples were collected opportunistically from 10 species of lemurs inhabiting three national parks in southern Madagascar using a combination of focal animal follows and live trapping. In total, we detected arthropod DNA in 98 of the 170 fecal samples analyzed. Although all lemur species included in these analyses showed evidence of arthropod consumption, those within the family Cheirogaleidae appeared to consume the highest frequency and diversity of arthropods. To our knowledge, this study presents the first evidence of arthropod consumption in Phaner pallescens, Avahi peyrierasi, and Propithecus verreauxi, and identifies 32 families of arthropods as probable food items that have not been published as lemur dietary items to date. Our study emphasizes the importance of arthropods as a nutritional source and the role DNA metabarcoding can play in elucidating an animal's diet.

Abstract
The performance of artificial nerve guidance conduits (NGC) in peripheral nerve regeneration can be improved by providing structures with multiple small channels instead of a single wide lumen. 3D-printing is a strategy to access such multi-channeled structures in a defined and reproducible way. This study explores extrusion-based 3D-printing of two-component hydrogels from a single cartridge printhead into multi-channeled structures under aseptic conditions. The gels are based on a platform of synthetic, anhydride-containing oligomers for cross-linking of gelatinous peptides. Stable constructs with continuous small channels and a variety of footprints and sizes were successfully generated from formulations containing either an organic or inorganic gelation base. The adjustability of the system was investigated by varying the cross-linking oligomer and substituting the gelation bases controlling the cross-linking kinetics. Formulations with organic N-methyl-piperidin-3-ol and inorganic K2HPO4 yielded hydrogels with comparable properties after manual processing and extrusion-based 3D-printing. The slower reaction kinetics of formulations with K2HPO4 can be beneficial for extending the time frame for printing. The two-component hydrogels displayed both slow hydrolytic and activity-dependent enzymatic degradability. Together with satisfying in vitro cell proliferation data, these results indicate the suitability of our cross-linked hydrogels as multi-channeled NGC for enhanced peripheral nerve regeneration.

Abstract
In group-living species, integrating into a new social group after dispersal is an important life history milestone associated with physical and social challenges. Generally, this process seems to be accompanied by heightened glucocorticoid (GC) concentrations; however, most studies of physiological responses to group transfer have been conducted on species with despotic social relationships, where integrating individuals are often targets of frequent aggression. Here we present data on fecal glucocorticoid (fGC) concentrations during periods of unstable group membership for male woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii), a species with extremely low rates of male-male aggression and generally tolerant male-male associations. We collected data on males in four study groups at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station, Ecuador, and observed three attempted transfer events, involving a total of four adult males, in one study group. We observed only three instances of overt aggression (chases) between males across the entire study period, though male display behaviors were more frequent. We tested whether rates of displays were higher during periods of unstable group membership using a generalized linear mixed model (LMM). We also examined whether male status, group stability, and the occurrence of intergroup encounters affected fGC concentrations using LMMs. Contrary to our predictions, rates of display behaviors were not higher during periods of unstable group membership. However, both transient/integrating males and those who were already group members showed elevated fGC concentrations during these unstable periods. Our results suggest that even in species with tolerant male-male relationships, the integration of unfamiliar individuals can provoke an increase in GCs.

Background
The relevance of an angiosome model for infrapopliteal endovascular interventions (EVT) in diabetic patients is still in debate because the lesions are more likely to be diffuse with a different pattern of collateral arteries ranging from reduced to normal caliber. The aim of this study was to analyse the outcome of two different endovascular infrapopliteal interventional strategies (Group I: angiosome-based direct revascularization -DR- vs. Group II: complete (direct + indirect) revascularization strategy -CR-) in diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia. Furthermore we analyzed the outcome if DR or CR failed and only indirect revascularization (IR) or no revascularization was possible. Both groups were differentiated in patients with collaterals, defined as an intact pedal arch (immediate or after pedal PTA).
Patients and methods
We performed a prospective cohort study in routine angiologic patients. The database includes 91 consecutive EVT with two intrapopliteal interventional strategies performed in 68 diabetic patients (pts.; 24 female, 44 male, mean age 73±10 years) between 2013–2015 and 2016–2019. The study included only patients with CLI (Rutherford class 4 or greater) with a critical subtotal stenosis or occlusion of at least one artery below the knee. EVT were performed mainly by an antegrade approach and with the use of 5F sheaths. In case of failure to recanalise, a retrograde approach was attempted. Positive clinical outcome was defined as wound healing without amputation or wound healing after minor amputation, combined with a symptom improvement to Rutherford category 0 or 1 after 6 months. The clinical outcome proportions were compared using the Fisher's exact test.
Results
An angiosome-based direct reperfusion (DR) of the artery supplying the ischemic tissue and a complete (both direct and indirect, CR) revascularization strategy demonstrated a similar positive clinical outcome (92,6% vs. 90,5%; p=0.594). Indirect revascularization showed a significantly lower positive outcome in comparison to a successful DR as well as CR strategy (33,3% vs 92,6%, p=0.0003; 40% vs 90,5%, p=0.001). IR outcome improved by the presence of collaterals (66,7% vs. 30,8%).
Conclusions
In case of successful intervention, both strategies (DR and CR) yielded a similarly high proportion of positive clinical outcome. The role of collaterals and the pedal arch are important for the clinical outcome in patients in whom only indirect revascularization was possible, because of unsuccessful CR or DR. The time of the procedure/radiation, the risk to reopen more than one vessel, the necessary amount of contrast medium and final the costs of the procedure should also be considered for an individually based decision process to perform an angiosome-based direct or a complete revascularization.

OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to show the potential of the inexpensive macro photography technique for application in various fields of contemporary dental materials science. The method was used for studying surface characteristics for fractographic evaluation, topography analysis, and for the measurement of optical properties such as translucency and opalescence. MATERIALS AND METHODS The variable test setup consisted of a digital camera with macro or microscopic objectives (combined with a lens tube and an objective adapter). The distance between object surface and objectives was controlled by an automatic stacking unit with a software-controlled mobile object slide. The exposure was carried out by LED light sources and a standard illuminant (D55). RESULTS Highly resolved pictures with fine details, high focal depth, flexible imaging by adjusting the illuminates in different angles, and the possibility of 3D topography imaging are the main reasons why macro photography proved to be a suitable imaging method for fractographic analyses. The automatic focal stacking technique was a powerful tool for imaging distinct topographies in high-resolution with nearly unlimited focal depth and 3D surface visualisation. Translucency as well as opalescence, measured with the macro photography produced differed from the measurements performed with a conventional spectrophotometer. CONCLUSIONS The modular structure of the cost-effective macro photography setup enables diverse applications such as identification of material groups, fractography analysis, and 3D surface visualisation. Quantification of colour, translucency, as well as opalescence under condition of the microscopic scale requires further research.

Abstract
Studies in multiple host species have shown that gut microbial diversity and composition change during pregnancy and lactation. However, the specific mechanisms underlying these shifts are not well understood. Here, we use longitudinal data from wild Phayre's leaf monkeys to test the hypothesis that fluctuations in reproductive hormone concentrations contribute to gut microbial shifts during pregnancy. We described the microbial taxonomic composition of 91 fecal samples from 15 females (n = 16 cycling, n = 36 pregnant, n = 39 lactating) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and assessed whether the resulting data were better explained by overall reproductive stage or by fecal estrogen (fE) and progesterone (fP) concentrations. Our results indicate that while overall reproductive stage affected gut microbiome composition, the observed patterns were driven by reproductive hormones. Females had lower gut microbial diversity during pregnancy and fP concentrations were negatively correlated with diversity. Additionally, fP concentrations predicted both unweighted and weighted UniFrac distances, while reproductive state only predicted unweighted UniFrac distances. Seasonality (rainfall and periods of phytoprogestin consumption) additionally influenced gut microbial diversity and composition. Our results indicate that reproductive hormones, specifically progestagens, contribute to the shifts in the gut microbiome during pregnancy and lactation.

Abstract
Variation in the relationship between gestation length and body mass can arise because different types of tissue require varying amounts of energy to build, and not all species build such tissues in the same proportions. Given that a pregnant female has a finite amount of energy, trade-offs between investment in different tissues may occur. Here we examine if dental precocity accounts for variation in primate gestation length. If true, this could explain why folivorous species with precocial dentition have longer gestation lengths than predicted by neonatal brain and body mass. We compiled data on gestation length, neonate and adult female body and brain mass from the literature. We used published postcanine eruption schedules at 4 months of age and measured the total occlusal area as dental endowment to approximate dental precocity at birth. Species with embryonic delay in growth or altricial neonates were not considered because they represent grade shifts regarding gestation length. Consequently, our data were biased toward Simiiformes and Old World monkeys, specifically. We performed a phylogenetic generalized least squares regression (pGLS) of neonate brain mass in relation to neonate body mass, and a second pGLS with dental endowment as an additional predictor variable. Including dental endowment in the pGLS did not improve the model. Dental endowment did not systematically impact primate gestation length. Concordant with results from previous studies, this indicates that the energetically expensive period of tooth mineralization may occur postnatally. More data are required to examine if the results are typical across primates.

Abstract
A new discrimination method for the bioapatite materials bone, antler and ivory was developed using X-ray diffractometry and comprises non-invasive measurements in order to take valuable objects into account. Our approach deals with the analysis of peak intensity ratios resulting from several measurements on each object. For instance, the intensity ratio of the apatite reflections 002 and 310 has been described in the literature as representing the degree of apatite crystal orientation and varies depending on the sample orientation. The decisive factor for the material identification is the value dispersion of intensity ratios resulting from the total of all measurements on one object. This pattern of data points, visualised via kernel density estimation (KDE), is characteristic for ivory, bone and antler, respectively, and enables the discrimination of these materials. The observation is justifiable since apatite crystal orientation adapts to the collagen fibre arrangement which shows major differences between different sorts of bioapatite materials. The patterns of data points were received via analysis of 88 objects made of bone (n = 30), antler (n = 27) and ivory (n = 31). In order to verify several identifications X-ray computer tomography was supplemented. The presented method usefully supplements already existing approaches concerning microscopic, elementary and biochemical analyses.

A 25 y/o female patient with corrected tetralogy of Fallot (1995), pulmonary valve bio-prosthesis (1999) with consequent stenosis, and finally implantation of a pulmonary valve Hancock-conduit (2005), presented to our department with night sweats, shortness of breath, and fever for the past three weeks. Leukocytes and CRP were elevated, transthoracic echocardiography revealed a large vegetation on the pulmonary valve prosthesis with relevant stenosis (peak gradient 70 mmHg). The patient reported to have an 18-year-old cat as a pet, which had bit her shortly before onset of symptoms.
Blood cultures remained negative, bacterial broad spectrum PCR revealed Bartonella species. PET-CT was ordered and confirmed pulmonary valve endocarditis.
The patient was treated with antibiotics and eventually transferred to cardiac surgery due to persistently high gradients over the valve in combination with exertional dyspnea.
Bartonella is a well-known cause of blood culture negative infective endocarditis, which must be tested for specifically. This case underlines the importance of taking complete patient history, including presence of pets and especially recent bites. Comprehensive imaging must be performed timely in every patient with known valve disease and unexplained symptoms.

A 53 y/o female patient presented with clinical signs of stroke. Substantial cardiovascular risk factors were present with arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia, impaired glucose tolerance, and a history of smoking. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a suspicious structure on the aortic valve. Consequently, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was ordered.
In TEE, the structure proved to be highly suspicious for fibroelastoma. In addition, significant plaque of the aortic arch, and a persistent foramen ovale (PFO) were diagnosed in this examination.
The patient was referred to cardiac surgery for excision of the mass on the aortic valve and for PFO closure.
This case stresses the importance of echo in patients presenting with stroke. Apart from left atrial thrombus, several other possible embolic substrates can be diagnosed.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to relate an artificial aging protocol for the analysis of dental materials to their clinical performance. 20 fixed interim restorations (crowns and fixed denture prostheses (FDPs)) fabricated from two commercially available resin-based composites (RBCs) and a previous clinical trial served as templates for the fabrication of duplicate restorations. Duplicates were subjected to artificial aging using thermal cycling and mechanical loading. Subsequent to wear analysis, templates and duplicates were loaded to fracture and were examined using thermal gravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For both RBCs, a relevant uptake of water was identified, which was more pronounced in the duplicates. Tribological analyses indicated relevant signs of wear in both templates and duplicates. While qualitative analyses indicated macroscopically similar wear traces in templates and duplicates, data showed that wear of FDPs was underrated in the laboratory analyses. The results of the current study suggest that chewing simulation allows a proper estimation of aging processes in materials for the fabrication of fixed interim restorations. However, simulation parameters should be continuously improved using data derived from clinical settings to enhance the quality of the simulation protocols.

Aggression rarely escalates to physical conflict because doing so puts individuals at risk of injury. Escalation only pays off when the potential benefits outweigh the potential costs, that is, when resources critical to fitness are at stake. Here, we investigated the occurrence of injury in 2 Asian colobine species: Nepal gray langurs (Semnopithecus schistaceus) and Phayre’s leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus). In both species, younger individuals are higher-ranking and might have greater incentive to fight. However, Nepal gray langurs have a strict breeding season, which may magnify male mating competition, and Phayre’s leaf monkeys, unlike Nepal gray langurs, have female-biased dispersal, which may increase female injury risk during subadulthood. Using long-term data on observed injuries (Nepal gray langurs: n = 208; Phayre’s leaf monkeys: n = 225), we modeled the monthly occurrence of injury (Y/N) and found that males received more injuries than females in both species. Also, subadults generally experienced frequent injury, as young individuals likely face challenges when competing for group membership and/or establishing rank. In Nepal gray langurs, males received 3 times more injuries during the mating season, suggesting strong competition for mates during this period, and females experienced more injuries before conception, suggesting competition to meet the nutritional requirements for reproduction. Unexpectedly, females in smaller groups received more injuries in Nepal gray langurs. Overall, these results indicate that injuries are most likely when fighting may aid in establishing group membership, achieving high rank, and reproducing. Future research should investigate the influence of injuries on fitness outcomes.

OBJECTIVES Geophagy has several hypothesized functions, among them (1) detoxification of plant secondary compounds, for example, tannins, (2) buffering stomach pH to alleviate acidosis caused by high sugar intake, and (3) supplementing the diet with mineral nutrients. We tested these hypotheses in Nepal gray langurs (Semnopithecus schistaceus), a foregut fermenter for which fruits and leaves dominate the diet at different times of the year. MATERIALS AND METHODS We collected data on feeding time per food item for 21 unprovisioned adult langurs at Ramnagar, Nepal, for 1 year using instantaneous sampling (773 observation hours). We combined these data with relative sugar and tannin content of food items to estimate diet content. We collected rainfall data to distinguish the wet season (May-September) from the dry season (October-April). We collected soil samples from consumption and control sites to test for pH and sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium concentrations. RESULTS Langurs consumed soil from two sources: termite structures (in almost all months) and river banks and beds (mainly in the dry season). Soil feeding was not positively correlated with dietary tannin or sugar content (GLMM). Soil pH was not high enough to buffer stomach contents. Only sodium was significantly higher in consumed soil. DISCUSSION The most likely function of geophagy was the acquisition of sodium. This conclusion is consistent with reports for other animals. Buffering stomach pH, an often-suggested function for animals with ruminant-like digestion, was not supported. Detoxification, often proposed for animals with a diet high in secondary compounds, was also not supported.

Abstract
In several countries in northwestern Europe, the number of resident greylag geese (Anser anser) has increased by up to 20% a year over the last few decades. The increasing numbers of geese are causing problems in tourism and agriculture. The number of resident greylag geese visiting the Altmuehlsee lake, a recreational area in the south of Germany, has also increased, especially in June and July. However, the geese leave the lake again at the beginning of August. 30 adult greylag geese were banded with telemetry transmitters during molting at the Altmuehlsee lake to determine when the geese leave the lake in August and what structures they need in their winter habitat. The distances the greylag geese flew from their resting sites to foraging sites were calculated, as well as the size of their home ranges and the proportions of each habitat type in the home range. It was found that the greylag geese used small home ranges while rearing their young, and fed close to the water. After molting, the size of their home ranges increased. They fed on fields and meadows around the lake. In the winter habitat, the geese also had a small home range, and they preferred eating grain and corn and the availability of an open body of water. In addition, one group of geese remained in the city of Munich during the winter, benefiting from supplementary food from people. This information helps us to understand the different requirements of resident greylag geese. It can be used to inform management decisions aimed at preventing agricultural damage. Special goose areas can for example be designated for the different periods in a goose's life cycle.

Abstract
Sexual bias is a hallmark in various diseases. This review evaluates sexual dimorphism in clinical and experimental coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) myocarditis, and how sex bias in the experimental disease changes with increased age. Coxsackieviruses are major causes of viral myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, which is more frequent and severe in men than women. Young male mice infected with CVB3 develop heart-specific autoimmunity and severe myocarditis. Females infected during estrus (high estradiol) develop T-regulatory cells and when infected during diestrus (low estradiol) develop autoimmunity similar to males. During estrus, protection depends on estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), which promotes type I interferon, activation of natural killer/natural killer T cells and suppressor cell responses. Estrogen receptor beta has opposing effects to ERα and supports pro-inflammatory immunity. However, the sexual dimorphism of the disease is significantly ameliorated in aged animals when old females become as susceptible as males. This correlates to a selective loss of the ERα that is required for immunosuppression. Therefore, sex-associated hormones control susceptibility in the virus-mediated disease, but their impact can alter with the age and physiological stage of the individual.
