Abstract
A first-principles scaling law, based on turbulent transport considerations, and a multimachine database of density limit discharges from the ASDEX Upgrade, JET, and TCV tokamaks, show that the increase of the boundary turbulent transport with the plasma collisionality sets the maximum density achievable in tokamaks. This scaling law shows a strong dependence on the heating power, therefore predicting for ITER a significantly larger safety margin than the Greenwald empirical scaling [Greenwald et al., Nucl. Fusion, 28, 2199 (1988)NUFUAU0029-551510.1088/0029-5515/28/12/009] in case of unintentional high-to-low confinement transition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine the impact of preoperative exposure to intravenous contrast for CT and the risk of developing postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. METHODS This prospective, multicentre cohort study included adults undergoing gastrointestinal resection, stoma reversal or liver resection. Both elective and emergency procedures were included. Preoperative exposure to intravenous contrast was defined as exposure to contrast administered for the purposes of CT up to 7 days before surgery. The primary endpoint was the rate of AKI within 7 days. Propensity score-matched models were adjusted for patient, disease and operative variables. In a sensitivity analysis, a propensity score-matched model explored the association between preoperative exposure to contrast and AKI in the first 48 h after surgery. RESULTS A total of 5378 patients were included across 173 centres. Overall, 1249 patients (23·2 per cent) received intravenous contrast. The overall rate of AKI within 7 days of surgery was 13·4 per cent (718 of 5378). In the propensity score-matched model, preoperative exposure to contrast was not associated with AKI within 7 days (odds ratio (OR) 0·95, 95 per cent c.i. 0·73 to 1·21; P = 0·669). The sensitivity analysis showed no association between preoperative contrast administration and AKI within 48 h after operation (OR 1·09, 0·84 to 1·41; P = 0·498). CONCLUSION There was no association between preoperative intravenous contrast administered for CT up to 7 days before surgery and postoperative AKI. Risk of contrast-induced nephropathy should not be used as a reason to avoid contrast-enhanced CT.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effectiveness of clinical audit-feedback cycle as an educational tool in improving the technical quality of root canal therapy (RCT) and compliance with record keeping performed by dental undergraduates. METHODS Clinical audit learning was introduced in Year 3 of a 5-year curriculum for dental undergraduates. During classroom activities, students were briefed on clinical audit, selected their audit topics in groups of 5 or 6 students, and prepared and presented their audit protocols. One chosen topic was RCT, in which 3 different cohorts of Year 3 students conducted retrospective audits of patients' records in 2012, 2014 and 2015 for their compliance with recommended record keeping criteria and their performance in RCT. Students were trained by and calibrated against an endodontist (κ ≥ 0.8). After each audit, the findings were reported in class, and recommendations were made for improvement in performance of RCT and record keeping. Students' compliance with published guidelines was presented and their RCT performances in each year were compared using the chi-square test. RESULTS Overall compliance with of record keeping guidelines was 44.1% in 2012, 79.6% in 2014 and 94.6% in 2015 (P = .001). In the 2012 audit, acceptable extension, condensation and the absence of mishap were observed in 72.4, 75.7% and 91.5%; in the 2014 audit, 95.1%, 64.8% and 51.4%; and in 2015 audit, 96.4%, 82.1% and 92.8% of cases, respectively. In 2015, 76.8% of root canal fillings met all 3 technical quality criteria when compared to 48.6% in 2014 and 44.7% in 2012 (P = .001). CONCLUSION Clinical audit-feedback cycle is an effective educational tool for improving dental undergraduates' compliance with record keeping and performance in the technical quality of RCT.

Abstract
Intracranial subdural osteomas without any relation to osseous or meningeal tissues are rare, with only five cases including the present one having been reported so far. In most patients headache, which was always localized at the site of the lesion, was the most frequent complaint and subsided after complete resection of the neoplasm. The mechanism of origin of such lesions remains unknown.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the demographic and socio-economic correlates for dental pain in UK adults, and characterise those with dental pain who did not access dental services and perceived treatment need. DESIGN Secondary analysis of the 1998 UK Adult Dental Health Survey data. SETTING Survey of random sample of UK households between September and December 1998. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Face-to-face interviews with community-dwelling adults, aged 16 years and over. MAIN: outcome measures Self-reported dental pain in the past 12 months. Dental attendance and perceived treatment need of those reporting dental pain. RESULTS Of the 4,942 valid responses, 46.1% were men, the proportion of subjects in each 10-year band age group up to 65 years ranged from 10 to 23%, and 42.6% were manual workers. Dental pain was reported by 28%. After controlling for gender and age, manual workers were more likely to report dental pain (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.06-1.37), non-utilisation of dental services (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.12-1.82), and perceived treatment need (OR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.03-1.60). CONCLUSIONS Inequality by social class, age and gender exists in the experience of dental pain, access to dental services and perceived treatment need in the UK adult population. Dental health services need to address the needs of this particular section of the population if the Government is to live up to its commitment to reducing oral health inequality and improving access.

Abstract
A new series of 8-halogen-4,4a,5,6-tetrahydrothieno[2,3-h]cinnolinone-N2-alkanoic acids was prepared and tested for aldose reductase (ALR2) inhibitory activities. These compounds showed significant inhibitory activity against bovine lens ALR2, with the best compound 2e showing an IC(50) value of 31.4 microM. The presence of the C8-substituents here studied (Cl, Br) on the thienocinnolinone scaffold caused a decrease of the inhibitory potency by a factor of about 4 with respect to the unsubstituted parent compound, while the presence of a C8-methyl group, considered in a previous paper decreased the activity by a factor of about 2. Moreover, the length of the N2 alkanoic chain influences strongly the enzyme inhibitory activity. While most of the carboxylic acids ALR2 inhibitors are acetic acid derivatives, in the case of thienocinnolinone compounds, homologues higher than acetic acids showed to be more active.

Abstract
Designed as a new series of so called "bivalent ligand" containing the proposed 2-benzylnaphthimidazole-type structure, a number of 2-benzylnaphth[2,3-d]imidazoles, bearing various substituents, have been prepared by a synthetic approach involving an heterocyclization of 2,3-diaminonaphthalene 4 with appropriate imidates 3 (for 1b-i) followed by alkylation (for 1j-l) with the desired alkylating agent. Compounds 1b-f, h-l were subjected to primary biological evaluation for cancer cell growth inhibition (one-dose, three-cell assay), and the four most active terms, 1c, h, i and j, were then evaluated for their cytotoxic profiles in the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) human disease-oriented, 60 cell line, in vitro antitumor screening protocol. Among them, two compounds (1h and 1i) are the most representatives demonstrating not only high growth-inhibitory activities against some leukemia cancer cells, but also fairly good activities against the growth of certain cell lines of some solid tumors.

Abstract
A novel series of tetrahydrothieno[2,3-h]cinnolinone derivatives were synthesized and evaluated in vitro for their ability to inhibit aldose reductase (ALR2), an enzyme involved in the appearance of diabetic complications. Compounds 2e and 2j exert a remarkable inhibitory effect, with IC(50) of 7.6 and 18 microM, respectively. These compounds incorporate a valid pharmacophore for aldose reductase inhibitory activity represented by a thienocinnolinone template linked through a pentamethylene spacer to a carboxylic function.

Abstract
A fatality due to the ingestion of solution containing phenol and o-cresol is described. The pathological findings were typical of acute substantial poisoning. Blood, urine and stomach content were obtained during post mortem examinations. Phenol and o-cresol were identified using GC/MS. The extractions from autopsy materials were obtained as follows: by gel permeation with cyclohexane/dichloromethane from stomach content, by solid phase extraction (SPE) from urine and by deproteinization with acetonitrile from blood. The phenol and o-cresol concentrations in the samples were found, respectively, as follows: 115.0 and 5.0 microg/g in the stomach contents, 58.3 and 1.9 microg/ml in the blood, 3.3 and 20.5 microg/ml in the urine. Distributions of phenol in fatal poisonings have been reported, but, usually, colorimetry was used as the analytical method and it cannot exclude the interference of other phenolic compounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Regrowth of cerebral cavernomas after apparently complete excision, de novo occurrence, and evidence of proliferation-related patterns raise the question as to their intrinsic growth potential. A particular isoform (Type III repeat c) of the glycoprotein tenascin-C (TN-C), typically associated with the vessels of anaplastic gliomas, is regarded as a marker of vascular proliferation in lesions growing within brain tissue. This study sought to ascertain whether this isoform is expressed in cerebral cavernomas to gain further insight into the growth potential of these lesions. METHODS Sixteen cerebral cavernomas and three fragments of normal brain underwent immunohistochemical examinations via two antibody fragments obtained by phage display technology. Previous characterization demonstrated that the fragment TN-12 recognizes the epidermal growth factor-like repeat, common to all TN-C isoforms. On the contrary, the fragment TN-11 was found to be highly specific for the Type III repeat c isoform. RESULTS Accumulation of total TN-C was found in the vascular walls and in the interspaces between the blood cavities of all examined cavernomas. When the antibody fragment TN-11 was used, staining of the subendothelial layers occurred in both the bulk of the cavernomas and vessels of the white matter surrounding the lesions, but staining was absent in the control specimens. CONCLUSION The distribution of the Type III repeat c isoform of TN-C, a putative marker of vascular proliferation, within cerebral cavernomas is consistent with the hypothesis of a growth potential of cerebral cavernomas. Enlargement of these lesions might involve recruitment of neighboring vasculature, which is possibly dependent on environmental conditions.

Abstract
THE SUBCHOROIDAL APPROACH has taken its place among the surgical access routes to the third ventricle. Eighteen centuries ago, in his major anatomic work, Galen detailed with astonishing accuracy the anatomy of the structures around the third ventricle and the procedure for exposing this cavity by entering the lateral ventricles and elevating its roof. Even more surprising is Galen's pioneering description of surgical maneuvers of the third ventricle in living animals in a way that anticipated the modern subchoroidal approach.

Abstract
Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated non-Hodgkin lymphoma often present with multiple poor prognostic features, including significant tumor burden, advanced immunosuppression, and other concurrent morbidities. Strategies to manage such complex multiple-disease cases have often incorporated the assumption that prospects for long-term survival are poor and that intensive therapy cannot be tolerated and so is not justified. Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy for human immunodeficiency virus infection, life expectancy has improved substantially for patients in whom the virus can be successfully suppressed. Thus, for complicated cases involving AIDS-associated malignancy, a reassessment of treatment strategies and the potential for long-term survival is warranted. Here, we present the case of a patient with poor prognosis due to AIDS-associated lymphoma with leptomeningeal involvement, advanced immunosuppression, and deep venous thrombosis. The management of this case illustrates that a multidisciplinary approach to complex AIDS cases involving malignancy and concurrent morbidity can result in a return to functional health in affected patients. Successful strategies for achieving favorable outcomes currently exist with available therapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed cellularity in patellar tendinosis with respect to cell proliferation and the expression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta (PDGFRbeta). METHODS Surgical samples were taken from 11 patients fulfilling criteria of patellar tendinosis and from 12 matched controls. Standard immunohistochemistry methods were used to detect expression of PDGFRbeta and proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Results were analysed by computer-assisted microscopy. Tendon cells were isolated from nine tendinosis and eight control tissues for cell culture. RESULTS Increased cellularity (P<0.001) was observed in tendinosis tissues compared with controls, and also a higher proliferative index (P:<0.001). Increased expression of PDGFRbeta was demonstrated (P<0.001). Cultured tendinosis cells showed a higher proliferation rate than controls (P<0.001). This was maintained when the cells were cultured under various conditions of serum supplementation (P<0.01). Tendinosis cells also showed a higher proliferation rate (P<0.01) in medium containing 10 ng/ml PDGF. CONCLUSION Hypercellularity in patellar tendinosis is caused by increased cell proliferation and is associated with increased expression of PDGFRbeta.

Abstract
The synthesis of analogues of N,2-diphenyl-N-(4-piperidyl)acetamide endowed with antiarrhythmic activity is reported. Benzoyl, cinnamoyl, acetyl and propionyl groups replace the phenacyl group as N-acyl substituent, while pyridine replaces benzene as aromatic ring bound to the amide nitrogen. The title compounds were evaluated for antiarrhythmic activity on experimental arrhythmias induced by aconitine in rats. The presence of a n-propyl chain and an unsubstituted cinnamoyl moiety (1j) gives the highest protection against aconitine induced extrasystoles while the best efficacy against lethal effects is due to the presence of a n-propyl chain and an acetyl moiety (1m).

Abstract
Two series of hydrazonic compounds related to main classes of inhibitors of fungal squalene epoxidase (SE) were designed and prepared on the hypothesis of a pharmacophoric model. The antifungal activity of the new compounds was evaluated in vitro against dermatophytes, moulds and yeasts. Antidermatophytic activity resulted for several hydrazones, particularly for those containing a tett-butylacetylenic group, supporting the hypothesis that the introduction of a hydrazonic function in the model could retain the antimycotic activity.

Abstract
Seventeen (un)substituted N-[4-(propyl)cyclohexyl]-amides (6a-h, 7a-h and 8) were synthesized and tested as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents. The substituents on the aromatic ring were chosen in order to study the influence of electron-withdrawing or electron-donating residues, that change the electronic density on the aromatic moiety. The pharmacological results allow drawing some preliminary considerations on structure-activity relationships.

Abstract
Fibronectins (FNs), adhesive glycoproteins mainly expressed in the extracellular matrix, are polymorphic molecules whose various isoforms are dependent on alternative splicing patterns. The isoform containing the ED-B sequence and occurring in foetal and neoplastic tissues (oncofoetal or B+FN) has been previously recognized as a marker for angiogenesis. The distribution of this isoform was analyzed in a consecutive series of 134 surgically obtained intracranial meningiomas, using specific monoclonal antibodies. Oncofoetal FN was found to be widely distributed in the vessels of anaplastic meningiomas, with its expression being restricted in the vasculature of the typical subtypes. and absent in the neighbouring cerebral tissue. The ubiquitous vascular expression of B+FN in meningiomatous malignancies might provide a potential target for the in vivo delivery of angiosuppressive agents.

STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of ritonavir on the pharmacokinetics of meperidine and normeperidine. DESIGN Open-label, crossover, pharmacokinetic study. SETTING United States government research hospital. SUBJECTS Eight healthy volunteers who tested negative for the human immunodeficiency virus. INTERVENTION Subjects received oral meperidine 50 mg and had serial blood samples collected for 48 hours. They then received ritonavir 500 mg twice/day for 10 days, followed by administration of a second 50-mg meperidine dose and collection of serial samples. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Plasma samples were assayed for meperidine, normeperidine, and ritonavir. Meperidine's area under the curve (AUC) decreased in all subjects by a mean of 67+/-4% in the presence of ritonavir (p<0.005). Mean +/- SD maximum concentration was decreased from 126+/-47 to 51+/-21 ng/ml. Normeperidine's mean AUC was increased 47%, suggesting induction of hepatic metabolism. CONCLUSION Meperidine's AUC is significantly reduced, not increased, by concomitant ritonavir. Based on these findings, the risk of narcotic-related adverse effects from this combination appears to be minimal. However, increased concentrations of normeperidine suggest a potential for toxicity with increased dosages or long-term therapy.

Abstract
A series of substituted N-cycloalkyl benzamides, cinnamamides, and indole-3-carboxamides were synthesized and evaluated for their analgesic, antiinflammatory activities as well as for their gastrointestinal irritation liability. Indomethacin was used as reference drug in both tests. Compounds 1k, 1b, 1h, 1j, and 1g were the most active in the antiinflammatory paw edema inhibition test, with a sharply dose-dependent effect. In terms of the analgesic activity (acetic acid writhing test), the most active compound was 5a followed by 3a, but many other compounds were found to have a non-negligible potency. Even in this case, the effect was dose dependent.

Abstract
Immunomodulation has become a major focus of HIV research in an effort to augment, boost or restore the patient's damaged immune system. Recombinant interleukin-2 is currently being studied in phase II/III trials in HIV-infected patients. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that intermittent regimens are associated with marked rises in CD4+ cell counts without an increase in viral load. Most of these studies employ 5 consecutive days of interleukin-2 therapy by continuous intravenous infusion or subcutaneous injection, repeated every 8 weeks. An alternative strategy is the daily administration of low doses of interleukin-2, but clinical experience with this regimen is limited. Interleukin-2 administration can adversely affect virtually every organ system, requiring aggressive supportive care. A variety of administration strategies and interventions are being evaluated to minimise toxicity. Currently, no clinical end-point data are available for interleukin-2 in HIV-infected patients. Until phase III studies are completed, interleukin-2 can be used in the research setting as an immunomodulator and adjunct to antiretroviral therapy. Its potential to activate latently infected cells and promote HIV eradication from reservoir sites is also an important area for further study. If clinical benefit can be demonstrated, interleukin-2 could be useful as an adjunct to antiretroviral therapy if adverse effects can be minimised and therapy can be given infrequently on an outpatient basis.

Abstract
A method for 'in vivo' determination of the oxytetracyclin residues in ovine milk at low levels is described. Two groups of Sardinian breed sheep were treated with a dose of oxytetracycline by intramammary infusion and intramuscular administration, respectively. Oxytetracycline residues in extracts obtained from a preliminary cleanup procedure, were detected by an isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Linear calibration plots were obtained over a large concentration range of 1 mg ml(-1)-10 ng ml(-1), with correlation coefficients higher than 0.996. Recoveries between 85.8 and 98.9% were obtained. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of determination (LOQ) were 5.2 and 17.5 ng ml(-1), respectively. This method would be useful for routine monitoring of oxytetracycline residues in ovine dairy milk.

Abstract
Giant-cell tumors (osteoclastomas) of the sphenoid body are rare, histologically benign lesions that can grow in different directions within the bony structures of the skull base. To date, the precise role of the different surgical strategies (radical versus partial resection; biopsy) and of supplementary postoperative radiotherapy remains undefined due to the short follow-up of the majority of the reported cases. We present a patient who is alive without symptoms or signs of recurrence 44 years after a macroscopically radical excision of the neoplasm followed by radiotherapy.

A pilot pharmacokinetic and immunoscintigraphic study with the technetium-99m-labeled monoclonal antibody BC-1 directed against oncofetal fibronectin in patients with brain tumors. Cancer 1997; 80:2484-9. [PMID: 9406699 DOI: 10.1002/(sici)1097-0142(19971215)80:12+<2484::aid-cncr20>3.3.co;2-l] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/05/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Preliminary experiments in an animal model have shown the favorable tumor targeting potential in vivo of radiolabeled BC-1, an immunoglobulin (Ig)G1 monoclonal antibody (MoAb) that recognizes the human fibronectin isoform (B+) containing the ED-B oncofetal domain. This antigen has extremely restricted distribution in normal adult tissues. Instead, it is highly expressed in fetal and tumor tissues, especially in high grade astrocytomas and malignant gliomas of the brain, in which the process of neoangiogenesis linked to tumor growth is particularly important. METHODS This study was carried out with five patients who had malignant brain tumors (four gliomas and one malignant angioblastic meningioma). The BC-1 MoAb was labeled with technetium-99m (99mTc) by MDP transchelation. Planar and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging was acquired at 4-6 and 20 hours after intravenous injection of about 450 MBq/0.2 mg 99mTc-BC-1 and was compared with the nonspecific indicator of blood-brain barrier disruption, 99mTc-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA). Plasma pharmacokinetic analysis was based on serial blood sampling. All patients underwent potentially curative surgery at the end of the study. RESULTS The plasma clearance curves were biexponential, with average T(1/2) values of 2-4 hours and 28-33 hours, respectively. 99mTc-BC-1 showed very low nonspecific uptake in the bone marrow, liver, and spleen. Planar and SPECT imaging with 99mTc-BC-1 visualized brain tumors in all patients, with a pattern of intratumor distribution that specifically identified areas of peripheral tumor growth more accurately than the nonspecific indicator, 99mTc-DTPA. Tumor uptake of 99mTc-BC-1 was correlated with the expression of the specific oncofetal fibronectin, as shown by immunohistochemistry on surgical samples. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate the diagnostic potential of MoAb 99mTc-BC-1 for immunoscintigraphy in cancer patients, at least when neoangiogenesis induced by cancer is particularly important.

Abstract
Intraventricular location of meningiomas is impressively higher in childhood and adolescence than in adult patients, respectively 15 to 22% versus 0.2 to 4%. However, location of this tumor within the third ventricle is extremely rare in the pediatric population, since, as far as we know, 17 cases have been reported so far. A case of meningioma of the third ventricle in a 9-year-old boy and its clinical and pathological finding are discussed.

Abstract
A modification of the lateral orbitotomy is reported for the microsurgical approach to tumors located in the posterior intraconal space. The orbital apex is entered through a small bone opening on the orbital and temporal portions of the greater wing of the sphenoid, with the lesser sphenoidal wing, the orbital plate of the frontal bone, and the lateral orbital rim being left intact. This surgical technique was employed in 8 cases of pure apical tumors, out of a consecutive series of 103 orbital growths. It proved to be reliable with regard to either adequate exposure and radical excision of the lesions or low rate of operative morbility.

Can lacerations of the thoraco-lumbar dura be predicted on the basis of radiological patterns of the spinal fractures? Acta Neurochir (Wien) 1994; 129:186-7. Abstract
Encroachment upon the spinal canal, separation of the pedicles, associated fractures of the laminae are assumed to be related to dural lacerations consequent to burst fractures of the thoracolumbar spine. Owing to the possible occurrence of early or delayed complications of meningeal discontinuations, the predictive value of these signs has been analyzed in a consecutive series of 50 patients, who were submitted to surgery. Dural tears were found to occur at a rate of 60%, without any statistically significant relation with any of the examined signs. The results were not consistent with the thesis that lacerations of the dura can be predicted on the basis of radiological signs.

Abstract
Forty-one patients with burst fractures of the thoracolumbar junction, or the lumbar spine (T12 to L5), were followed for 6-48 months (mean follow-up = 19.9 months) after early surgery (usually within 24 hours). Preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative degrees of kyphosis, as well as percent reduction of the height of the vertebral body were calculated and compared. Early postoperative radiologic evaluations showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.0001) between the mean values of both parameters calculated respectively before and after surgery. The decrease of the surgical correction, from the initial postoperative radiographs to follow-up, was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). However, the final values were better when compared with the preoperative features (p < 0.003 and p < 0.0001, respectively for degree of kyphosis and reduction in vertebral height.

Abstract
Out of a series of 43 cases operated on for ruptured intracranial aneurysms over a 12-month-period, 32 patients were followed up to 12 months postoperatively with repeated evaluations of cerebral blood flow, using the Xenon133 inhalation technique. No statistically significant differences in cerebral perfusion were detected between the subgroups of good-grade patients, who were submitted respectively to early, or delayed surgery. Depression of flow in the affected hemisphere of poor-grade patients was principally related to the preoperative occurrence of an intracerebral haematoma. The overall results were not consistent with the hypothesis that early surgical intervention results in long-lasting effects on the cerebral circulation.

Infratentorial ischaemia following experimental cerebellar haemorrhage in the rat. Acta Neurochir (Wien) 1994; 131:146-50. Abstract
Early changes of cerebellar and cerebral blood flow, as well as subsequent infratentorial ischaemia, were evaluated in an experimental model of cerebellar haemorrhage. Eight anaesthetized male adult Sprague-Dawley rats received an injection of autologous arterial blood (50 microliters) into the right cerebellar hemisphere. Eight animals were sham-operated and served as controls. Cerebellar blood flow, measured at regular time intervals in the hemispheric cortex ipsilateral to the lesion by the hydrogen clearance method, was significantly depressed in the experimental group as compared with the control animals. This drop in cerebellar blood flow was evident 5, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min postoperatively, with a return to pre-injection values recorded 180 min after surgery. No significant difference in supratentorial blood flow was detected over the entire period examined between the two groups of animals. Enzyme histochemistry demonstrated areas of ischaemia around the clot and within the brain stem in animals with an intracerebellar haemorrhage at the end of the experiment. These results provided evidence of ischaemic damage within the infratentorial compartment after the induction of experimental cerebellar haemorrhage.
