Abstract
RATIONALE The gut microbiota may play an important role in the development and functioning of the mammalian central nervous system. The assumption of the experiment was to prove that the use of probiotic bacterial strains in the diet of mice modifies the expression of brain proteins involved in metabolic and immunological processes. OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS Albino Swiss mice were administered with Bifidobacterium longum Rosell®-175 or Lactobacillus rhamnosus JB-1 every 24 h for 28 days. Protein maps were prepared from hippocampal homogenates of euthanized mice. Selected proteins that were statistically significant were purified and concentrated and identified using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Among the analysed samples, 13 proteins were identified. The mean volumes of calcyon, secreted frizzled-associated protein 3, and catalase in the hippocampus of mice from both experimental groups were statistically significantly higher than in the control group. In mice supplemented with Lactobacillus rhamnosus JB-1, a lower mean volume of fragrance binding protein 2, shadow of prion protein, and glycine receptor α4 subunit was observed compared to the control. CONCLUSION The psychobiotics Bifidobacterium longum Rosell®-175 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus JB-1enhances expression of proteins involved in the activation and maturation of nerve cells, as well as myelination and homeostatic regulation of neurogenesis in mice. The tested psychobiotics cause a decrease in the expression of proteins associated with CNS development and in synaptic transmission, thereby reducing the capacity for communication between nerve cells. The results of the study indicate that psychobiotic bacteria can be used in auxiliary treatment of neurological disorders.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine differences in the proteome and peptidome and zinc concentrations in the serum and tissues of chickens supplemented with a multi-strain probiotic and/or zinc glycine chelate in ovo. A total of 1400 fertilized broiler eggs (Ross × Ross 708) were divided into four groups: a control and experimental groups injected with a multi-strain probiotic, with zinc glycine chelate, and with the multi-strain probiotic and zinc glycine chelate. The proteome and peptidome were analyzed using SDS-PAGE and MALDI-TOF MS, and the zinc concentration was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. We showed that in ovo supplementation with zinc glycine chelate increased the Zn concentration in the serum and yolk sac at 12 h post-hatch. The results of SDS-PAGE and western blot confirmed the presence of Cu/Zn SOD in the liver and in the small and large intestines at 12 h and at 7 days after hatching in all groups. Analysis of the MALDI-TOF MS spectra of chicken tissues showed in all experimental groups the expression of proteins and peptides that regulate immune response, metabolic processes, growth, development, and reproduction.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of in ovo co-supplementation of chicken embryos with a multi-strain probiotic containing effective microorganisms and zinc glycine chelate on total antioxidant capacity; concentrations of sulfhydryl groups, bityrosine bridges, formylkynurenines, hydroperoxides, proteins, corticosterone, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and heat shock proteins; and the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase in the serum, yolk sac and tissues of broiler chickens at 12 h and at 7 days after hatching. The results indicate high SOD activity in the small and large intestines of chicks at 12 h post-hatch in the groups receiving the multi-strain probiotic and in the small intestine and yolk sac of birds receiving the multi-strain probiotic and Zn-Gly chelate. High concentrations of TNF-α and IFN-γ in the yolk sac and serum after in ovo administration of Zn-Gly chelate were observed 12 h after hatching. The use of a probiotic and a probiotic with Zn-Gly chelate increased the total antioxidant capacity in the tissues of chickens. It can be concluded that in ovo administration of a multi-strain probiotic and Zn-Gly chelate can maintain the oxidant/antioxidant balance in chickens and increase the defense capacity against oxidative stress.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of in ovo administration of zinc glycine chelate (Zn-Gly), and a multistrain probiotic on the hatchability and selected parameters of the cellular and humoral immune response of chickens. The study was conducted on 1,400 fertilized eggs from commercial broiler breeders (Ross x Ross 708). Material for the study consisted of peripheral blood and spleens of chicks taken 12 h and 7 d after hatching. The results showed that both combined and single in ovo administration of the multistrain probiotic and zinc glycine chelate significantly reduced hatchability of chicks. The flow cytometry study showed that the highest percentage of CD4+ T cells, CD4+CD25+, and high expression of KUL01 in the serum were obtained in the group supplemented with probiotic and Zn-Gly both 12 h and 7 d after hatching. In birds supplemented with probiotic and zinc chelate, a high percentage of TCRγδ+ cells was found in serum and spleen 12 h after hatching and in serum after 7 d. The percentage of Bu-1A+ lymphocytes in serum and spleen 12 h and 7 d after hatching was the highest in the group supplemented with probiotic and Zn-Gly. The highest expression of CD79A was observed in the group supplemented only with zinc chelate. There were no significant differences in the percentage of CD4+ cells in the spleens of birds in the groups receiving the multistrain probiotic at 12 h after hatching, and after 7 d, the percentage of CD4+ T cells was lower in the experimental groups than in the control group. The percentage of CD8+ cells in the serum of birds after hatching was lower in the group supplemented with multistrain probiotic and Zn-Gly than in the control group, but reached the highest value on d 7 after hatching. The obtained results confirm the strong effect of the combined administration of a multistrain probiotic and Zn-Gly chelate on lymphocyte proliferation and stimulation of cellular immune mechanisms in birds.

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate the effect of supplementing an emulsifier, xylanase or a combination of both on the growth performance, digestibility of nutrients, microflora activity and intestinal morphology in broiler chickens fed triticale-based diets. A total of 480 one-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: control (CON), control with an added emulsifier (EMU), control with added xylanase (ENZ) and control with emulsifier and xylanase (EMU+ENZ). Xylanase supplemented groups had diminished feed intake (FI) and enhanced body weight gain (BWG) only within the starter period (p ≤ 0.05), while the feed conversion ratio (FCR) in the ENZ and ENZ+EMU groups was lower than CON during the whole experiment period. There was significant ENZ and EMU interaction in apparent metabolisable energy corrected to N equilibrium (AMEN) as well as NDF and DM retention. The viscosity of ileum digesta was the lowest in groups with enzyme addition. Interactions show that caecal galactosidase-α activity was higher in the CON group compared to EMU supplementation, but similar to ENZ and EMU+ENZ (p < 0.05). Activity of glucosidase-α was higher in the CON group related to inclusion of EMU or ENZ alone (p < 0.05) but did not differ from the combined supplementation of EMU+ENZ, whereas the glucosidase-β activity was higher in the CON group compared to all supplemented diets (p < 0.05). Caecal C2 concentration was greater in the CON group than supplemented diets (p < 0.05). The expression of FATP1, PEPT1 and SGLT1 in the ileum was downregulated after emulsifier addition (p ≤ 0.05). The addition of emulsifier and xylanase indicates a mutual effect on broiler chickens' performance and nutrient digestibility in triticale diets with palm oil during the first nutritional period. Additionally, concomitantly additives usage influenced intestinal microbiome activity, as well.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of emulsifier and multicarbohydrase enzyme supplementation on performance, nutrient utilization, and apparent metabolizable energy-nitrogen (AMEN) value of broiler diets containing rapeseed meal (RSM) as well as their influence on the gut morphological structures, excretion of total and free sialic acid, and cecum concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in broiler chickens. A total of 384 male broiler chicks were assigned to four dietary treatments. The diet of the control treatment (CON) consisted of soybean, maize, and RSM (5% in starter, 7% in grower, 15% in finisher) with soybean and palm oils. The diets used for the experimental treatments were the control diet supplemented with an emulsifier (EMU), enzyme (ENZ), or both (EMU + ENZ). The duodenum (n = 10/treatment) and ileum (n = 10/treatment) digesta samples were assessed to determine nutrient digestibility: crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), starch, Ca. Throughout the experimental period, EMU + ENZ treatment indicated the lowest total average feed intake and feed conversion ratio, with the highest average weight gain among the studied treatments (P < 0.05). The EMU + ENZ treatment also resulted in higher (P < 0.05): apparent prececal digestibility (APD) of CP, total tract neutral detergent fibre (NDF) degradation, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of EE, villus height to crypt depth ratio (P < 0.1). The highest APD of EE was noted in the EMU treatment (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found in the AMEN values of the diets. A greater jejunum villi surface area was found in groups supplemented by enzyme compared to CON (P < 0.05). The EMU + ENZ treatment presented lower sialic acid excretion in the ileum and concentration of cecum SCFAs compared to the CON treatment (P < 0.05). The obtained results indicate that simultaneous usage of additives had beneficial effect on production parameters, nutrient digestibility, NDF degradation, as well as gut mucosa morphology. Based on the SCFAs concentration results, separate or simultaneous addition of emulsifier or/and enzyme did not provoke excessive fermentation activity of cecal bacteria.

Abstract
The transfer of hatchability results obtained under experimental conditions to the commercial ground with a positive financial effect proves the value and usefulness of these data. On the other hand, finding results on commercial processes of broiler breeders' egg incubation in the literature is challenging. The presented study aimed to determine the effects of egg weight and storage time on the physical, biochemical characteristics of hatching eggs, embryogenesis and hatchability in Ross 308 broiler breeders. On the laying day, the eggs were divided into four weight groups: S - small eggs (57-61 g), M - medium eggs (62-66 g), L - large eggs (67-71 g), and XL - extra-large eggs (72-76 g). The eggs were then stored for 3, 7, 14, and 21 days under controlled conditions. As the egg storage time increased, a decrease in the yolk quality (lower index) was observed. The highest Haugh units were found in eggs from the S and M groups. The cholesterol content of the M, L, and XL groups was lower on days 7, 14, and 21 as compared to that of eggs only stored for 3 days. Egg weight loss during incubation decreased with an increase in the egg weight. An extension of the egg storage time caused an increase in the loss of egg weight. On the 14th and 18th days of hatching, an increase in the eggshell temperature was noted with an increase in the weight of the egg. The eggs stored for 7 days were characterised by the highest shell temperature on each day. The highest hatchability percentage was recorded for the M group. The hatchability rate decreased with the prolongation of the storage time, while the number of crippled chicks after hatching increased. The results confirmed that the increased weight of the eggs and prolonged storage time (14 and 21 days) increased the weight and decreased the length of the newly hatched chicks, respectively. Chicks from the heaviest eggs and those stored for 14 and 21 days showed poor results on the Pasgar score® test. The observations indicate the need to adopt various (of those available) methods to assess the quality of newly hatched chicks in hatcheries in order to produce high-quality broiler chickens. The results also indicate that prolonged egg storing beyond 14 days may affect the thyroid hormone economy during the hatching of chicks, especially in the XL group.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of EM Bokashi® on selected parameters of the specific and nonspecific immune response of sows by in colostrum and milk samples. The percentage of cells with expression of CD19+, CD5+CD19+, CD21+, SWC3a (macrophage/monocyte), and CD11b+ molecules on the monocytes and granulocytes as well as the concentrations of lysozyme and acute phase proteins - serum amyloid-A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) were evaluated. The study was carried out on a commercial pig farm, including 150 sows (Polish Large White × Polish Landrace) at the age of 2-4 years. Sixty female sows were divided into two groups: I - control and II - experimental. For the experimental group, a probiotic in the form of the preparation EM Bokashi® in the amount of 10 kg/tonne of feed was added to the basal feed from mating to weaning. The material for the study consisted of colostrum and milk. The samples were collected from all sows at 0, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 h after parturition. The study showed that exposure of the pregnant sow to the probiotic microbes contained in EM Bokashi® significantly affects the immunological quality of the colostrum and milk and caused an increase in the percentage of the subpopulations of B cells with CD19+, CD21+, and CD5+CD19+ expression in the colostrum and milk, which demonstrates an increase in the protective potential of colostrum and indicates stimulation of humoral immune mechanisms that protect the sow and the piglets against infections.

Abstract
Nowadays, metallic alloys are extensively used in wear-related biomedical applications. However, it was shown that one of the factors which may contribute to the premature implant failure is the temperature effect caused by the sliding action between the bearing surfaces. Nevertheless, there are not many papers where the wear-related temperature phenomena of biomedical alloys are discussed. Thus, in our paper, we present findings from the tribological tests of the model metallic biomaterials-316L steel, CoCrMo alloy and Ti gr. 2. In our study, the temperature alterations induced by the wear action of the examined materials were analyzed. According to the findings, the temperature response of the biomedical alloys is tribological pair dependent. While the mass loss of the tribological pair 316L-316L steel was the slightest, at the same time the temperature increase was the greatest. Based on the presented findings, further analyses in friction-induced temperature response of biomedical alloys is recommended.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The population of elderly patients after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is increasing due to the extension of life expectancy.
Purpose
The aim of the study was to demonstrate the impact of individual exercise training on the course of the disease, exercise tolerance and quality of life in patients over 75 years of age after ACS.
Methods
The randomized, prospective, controlled clinical trial included patients with ACS, age >75 years, after acute percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: a training group (ExT) subjected to individualized physical training and a control group, not subjected to training program (CG). ExT patients participated in trainings three times a week for 2 months according to model B or C of the second stage of rehabilitation. Patients from control group (CG) received general recommendations for activity. In addition, patients underwent exercise tolerance test (ETT), 6-minute walk tests (6-MWT), NHP questionnaires evaluation, laboratory tests, ECG, echocardiographic examinations.
Results
The study included 51 patients, mean age 80 years, men: 50%, n=25 ExT, n=26 (CG). The study was completed by all patients. Physical capacity at the beginning of the trainings assessed in ETT and 6-MWT was comparable in both groups, ns. After two months of training program the average ETT exercise time increased by 12.5% (from 416±152 to 468±153 sec, p=0.0114), and the load by 13% (69±5.2 WAT to 78±25.4 WAT, p=0.0005). The average distance in 6-MWT increased by 8.3% (446±90 to 483±60 m, p=0.006). In CG, the values of the ETT and 6-MWT parameters hadn't significantly changed. After trainings cessation, the mean distances in the study after 6 months and after 12 months returned to the initial values of 474±73 and 476±80 m (respectively: p=0.069, p=0.062) in comparison to the test performed before the beginning of rehabilitation. Similarly, after 1 year, the average duration of the exercise test (242±147 sec) and the average load obtained (70±22.4 WAT) decreased significantly compared to the results after rehabilitation (p=0.0009, p=0.0006), obtaining similar levels as in the initial tests (p=0.481, p=0.593). In the NHP questionnaire in the ExT group the level of pain was significantly lower after the end of the training with respect to the initial measurements (p=0.007) and after 12-months follow-up (p=0.029). In the scale of emotional reactions, a significant deterioration of the quality of life in the ExT group was found after 12 months in relation to measurements after rehabilitation (p=0.040).
Conclusions
In the octogenarians after ACS, cardiac rehabilitation is safe and in a short period of time improves physical performance. The cessation of the 2-month training results in loss of achieved effects and the deterioration of the quality of life after 12 months since ACS.

Abstract
Huge advances achieved recently in elucidating the role of NO in plants have been made possible by the application of NO donors. However, the application of NO to plants in various forms and doses should be subjected to detailed verification criteria. Not all metabolic responses induced by NO donors are reliable and reproducible in other experimental designs. The aim of the presented studies was to investigate the half-life of the most frequently applied donors (SNP, SNAP and GSNO), the rate of NO release under the influence of light and reducing agents. At a comparable donor concentration (500 microM) and under light conditions the highest rate of NO generation was found for SNAP, followed by GSNO and SNP. The measured half-life of the donor in the solution was 3 h for SNAP, 7 h for GSNO and 12 h for SNP. A temporary lack of light inhibited NO release from SNP, both in the solution and SNP-treated leaf tissue, which was measured by the electrochemical method. Also a NO, selective fluorescence indicator DAF-2DA in leaves supplied with different donors showed green fluorescence spots in the epidermal cells mainly in the light. SNP as a NO donor was the most photosensitive. The activity of PAL, which plays an important role in plant defence, was also activated by SNP in the light, not in the dark. S-nitrosothiols (SNAP and GSNO) also underwent photodegradation, although to a lesser degree than SNP. Additionally, NO generation capacity from S-nitrosothiols was shown in the presence of reducing agents, i.e. ascorbic acid and GSH, and the absence of light. The authors of this paper would like to polemicize with the commonly cited statement that "donors are compounds that spontaneously break down to release NO" and wish to point out the fact that the process of donor decomposition depends on the numerous external factors. It may be additionally stimulated or inhibited by live plant tissue, thus it is necessary to take into consideration these aspects and monitor the amount of NO released by the donor.

Abstract
Thermally cleaned W(211) surface with 0.7 degrees miscut consists of (211) terraces separated by monoatomic steps. When the surface is exposed to oxygen and subsequently annealed at 1100-1900 K, the width of (211) terraces increases and multilayer steps are formed. Similar step bunching is observed during routine cleaning of the sample by annealing in oxygen and thermal flashing in ultra high vacuum. During such cleaning procedure islands of c(6 x 4) reconstruction are observed.

Abstract
The oxidation of 1,4-bis(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dimethylbutane, known also as nordihydroguaiaretic acid, on a glassy carbon electrode anodically pretreated in KCl solution gives rise to a stabile redox-active polymer containing the o-quinone moiety. The redox response of the modified electrode is typical for a surface-immobilized species. The modifier thickness can be easy controlled by a number of potential cycles applied during electropolymerization, and a surface coverage up to 1.1 x 10(-9) mol cm(-2) can be achieved. The film exhibits catalytic activity toward NADH oxidation. Characteristic kinetic constants for the mediated oxidation of NADH were derived from rotating disk experiments performed in phosphate or Tris/acetate buffers. The effects of film thickness, solution pH, and the presence of Mg2+ cation on the catalytic efficiency of the modified electrode were discussed and compared with literature data concerning related systems.

Abstract
Early clinical and radiological results of Charnley hip arthroplasties performed in 1995-1998 in Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of Zeromski's City Hospital in Cracow are presented. Control evaluation was made in 86 hips (76 patients) among 155 hips (170 patients) which were done in this Department. 97 per cent good results in clinical and 100 per cent good results in radiological evaluation were found in controlled group. In group of 170 alloplasties were 4.1 per cent local and none system complications. Results in this series confirm Charnley prosthesis as a most effective device in treatment of many hip pathologies.

Abstract
The role of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in the management of chronically occluded coronary arteries is still controversial. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty of chronic total occlusion is associated with relatively low success rates and a high incidence of restenosis. The purpose of this analysis was to determine, from the records of our institution, the efficacy and long-term outcome of angioplasty performed for chronic total occlusion defined as complete occlusion (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infraction [TIMI] grade 0). PTCA was performed in 212 consecutive patients with chronically occluded coronary arteries and was successful in 125 (59%) patients. Complications were not observed. Successful initial PTCA was related to the clinical duration of occlusion and the type of guidewire (the primary success rate with the conventional guidewire was 49 (48%) versus 76 (69.1%) with Magnum Meier System p < 0.01). Repeat angiography was performed for 65 (52.0%) consecutive patients with successful initial PTCA and demonstrated restenosis in 34 (52.3%). 17 patients were successfully treated by a second PTCA. Restenosis or reocclusion was not clearly related to the residual stenosis post PTCA. In addition, the grade of collateral supply was not different in the vessels with and without restenosis.

Abstract
The effect of PTCA on global and regional left ventricular systolic function, isovolumic relaxation, chamber and muscle stiffness were studied in 30 patients with angina pectoris, previous non-Q wave anterior myocardial infarction (AMI) and significant stenosis of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). In 11 of the 30 patients the condition was stable, but it was unstable in 19. Left ventricular angiograms were obtained before and 4.85 +/- 3.67 months after PTCA. The RAO was in the 30 degree projection, with the silhouette of the left ventricle sliced into 90 regions; changes in left ventricular volume, pressure and anterior wall thickness during the full cardiac cycle, together with dp/dt were demonstrated. After PTCA, global ejection fraction increased from 68.77 +/- 5.96% to 76.57 +/- 3.18%, P < 0.001. Impaired contractility was found in 29/90 (32.2%) regions before PTCA and in 5/90 (5.6%) after PTCA, P < 0.001. The time constant of the isovolumic pressure fall decreased after PTCA (52.56 +/- 17.40 ms vs 39.61 +/- 11.26 ms, P < 0.01). Elastic chamber stiffness coefficient decreased (0.022 +/- 0.003 vs 0.008 +/- 0.004, P < 0.001) and peak rate of left ventricular filling increased (319.0 +/- 107.9 ml.min-1 vs 396.8 +/- 201.4 ml.min-1, P < 0.05) after PTCA. The muscle stiffness coefficient was within normal values before and did not change after PTCA. The study findings show that in patients with persistent angina pectoris after non-Q wave AMI, complex systolic and diastolic ischaemic dysfunction occurs. This dysfunction can be reversed after successful PTCA of LAD.

Abstract
The clinical profile of 19 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy ages 2-18 years (mean 13.4 +/- 4 years) was reviewed to detect any factors that might be predictive for their survival. Follow-up range from 5 to 105 months (mean 39 +/- 33 months). Routine treatment consisted of digitalis and diuretics: 14 patients received antiarrhythmics, 6 received vasodilators, and 12 were managed with immunosuppression. There were 12 survivors and 7 nonsurvivors: The 1-year mortality was 21.2% and the 2-year mortality 35.8%. All deaths were within first 2 years. Of the 12 patients who survived 2 years, a significant improvement was noticed in 9. In 3 patients tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy was diagnosed, and abolition of supraventricular tachycardia was followed by improvement and regression of cardiomegaly. Endomyocardial biopsy was performed in 16 patients. Four with a histologic diagnosis of active myocarditis survived, and in 3 of them a considerable improvement was noticed. Of the 12 patients with nonspecific histologic findings, 6 died (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences between survivors and nonsurvivors for any of the following parameters: incidence of severe heart failure (NYHA class III-IV) and severe ventricular arrhythmias (Lown class III-V), relative heart volume, echocardiographic left ventricular diastolic diameter and shortening fraction, and the hemodynamic parameters of cardiac index, left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, and left ventricular end-diastolic volume index.

Abstract
Cardiac abnormalities were studied using the clinical, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic methods in 66 patients with systemic scleroderma. Abnormal ecg was seen in 41 patients (62.1%), most frequently in form ventricular extrasystole (21.2%), incomplete block of the right bundle branch (12.1%), left ventricular and right atrial hypertrophy (10.6%) each, and the pattern suggesting the history of past myocardial infarction (7.6%). Abnormal echocardiographic results were found in 38 patients (57.6%). The most usual changes, differentiating that group from the controls, were: sluggish diastolic movement of the posterior wall of the left ventricle (40.7%), pericardial effusion (37.0%), elongation of the isovolumic relaxation time diastole phase (99.3 s.m.v. 81.1 ms, p less than 0.001) and right ventricular dilatation. There were no significant differences between the scleroderma and the control group as regards the indices of the contractility of the left ventricle: ejection fraction (EF), velocity of circumferential fibres shortening (VCF), diastolic size of the left ventricle and of the left atrium. The prevalence of the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic abnormalities in particular types of scleroderma (diffuse, acroscleroderma, severe acroscleroderma, CREST) was roughly similar: 50-76%. Finding of the impaired diastolic rather than systolic function of the left ventricle and of the similar prevalence of the cardiac abnormalities in the particular types of scleroderma is new and contradictory to the commonplace opinions.
