Abstract
OBJECTIVE To confirm frozen section (FS) method for muscularis propria (MP) sampling and to compare the FS method with the ReTUR section (RS) procedure to reduce needing for second resection that can cause waste of time for definitive treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer. METHODS A total of 27 patients who admitted to our clinic and was performed transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT) due to bladder tumor and had an indication of ReTUR were evaluated prospectively in the study. During the first TUR-BT procedure (as permanent section), FS examination was also performed to the patients. ReTUR was performed 2-6 weeks after the first TUR-BT procedure. RESULTS Presences of MP were observed in 51.8% and 77.7% of FS and permanent section examinations. In the comparing of the presence of residual tumor in the methods, although 12 of 27 patients were found to have a residual tumor in FS, it was found to be in only 6 of 12 patients in RS. There was no statistical significance between FS and RS methods for MP sampling and detecting of residual tumor. CONCLUSIONS FS was found to be a comparable method with the RS method (ReTUR procedure) for the sampling of MP and detecting of residual tumor, despite the limitations in the pathological examination FS. Especially in patients with detected residual tumor after the pathological consultation of FS during the procedure, re-resection can be a choice at the end of the first TUR-BT instead of ReTUR.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features, including signal intensities, enhancement patterns and T2 signal intensity ratios to differentiate oncocytoma from chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS This retrospective study included 17 patients with oncocytoma and 33 patients with chromophobe RCC who underwent dynamic MRI. Two radiologists independently reviewed images blinded to pathology. Morphologic characteristics, T1 and T2 signal intensities were reviewed. T2 signal intensities, wash-in, wash-out values, T2 signal intensity ratios were calculated. Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed. RESULTS Mean ages of patients with oncocytoma and chromophobe RCC were 61.0±11.6 and 58.5±14.0 years, respectively. Mean tumor size was 60.6±47.3 mm for oncocytoma, 61.7±45.9 mm for chromophobe RCC. Qualitative imaging findings in conventional MRI have no distinctive feature in discrimination of two tumors. Regarding signal intensity ratios, oncocytomas were higher than chromophobe RCCs. Renal oncocytomas showed higher signal intensity ratios and wash-in values than chromophobe RCCs in all phases. Fast spin-echo T2 signal intensities were higher in oncocytomas than chromophobe RCCs. CONCLUSION Signal intensity ratios, fast spin-echo T2 signal intensities and wash-in values constitute diagnostic parameters for discriminating between oncoytomas and chromophobes. In the excretory phase of dynamic enhanced images, oncocytomas have higher signal intensity ratio than chromophobe RCC and high wash-in values strongly imply a diagnosis of renal oncocytoma.

Abstract
Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is a recently recognized tumor entity. We report a case of epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the kidney that occurred in a 70-year-old female. The patient presented with massive abdominal hemorrhage and shock. There was no history of tuberous sclerosis complex. The tumor consisted of smooth muscle, adipocytes, small-to-medium-sized hyalinized blood vessels and numerous pleomorphic epithelioid cells with clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitosis was exceptional and no glandular pattern was recognizable. Immunohistochemically the epithelioid cells were strongly positive for HMB45 and CD68, focally positive for S-100, actin and vimentin, and negative for epithelial markers including epithelial membrane antigen and cytokeratins. Previous reports in the English literature suggest that epithelioid angiomyolipoma may have malignant potential. In our case, at six months from surgery the patient is alive and well without evidence of relapse or metastasis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pathology education includes an important visual part supporting a wide range of theoretical knowledge. However, the use of traditional microscopes in pathology education has declined over the last decade and there is a lack of interest for microscopy. Virtual microscopy, which was first described in 1985 and has experienced a revolution since 2000, is an alternative technique to conventional microscopy, in which microscopic slides are scanned to form digital images and stored in the web. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of virtual microscopy in practical pathology sessions and its effects on our students and undergraduate education at our faculty. MATERIAL AND METHOD Second and third year medical students who were used to conventional microscopes were included in the study. The practical sessions were carried out via virtual slides and the effect of the new technique was investigated by a scale at the end of each session. Academic staff from the pathology department joined sessions to promote discussion and respond to questions. Student ratings were analysed statistically. RESULTS The evaluation of the ratings showed that the students were easily adapted to the use of virtual microscopy. They found it user-friendly and thought that the opportunity of viewing slides at home was advantageous. Collaboration between students and interactive discussions was also improved with this technique. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the use of virtual microscopy could contribute to the pathology education of our students.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors are unusual neoplasms that are rarely found in the liver parenchyma. They are usually described as hard, grayish white, well-defined lesions. Predominant cystic change in a solitary fibrous tumor is an unexpected finding, with only a few previous cases reported in the literature, two of which are localized in the head and neck region. Herein, we report a unique case of solitary fibrous tumor of the liver in a 38-year-old female with predominant multiloculated cystic appearance, and discuss the histopathologic differential diagnosis.

Abstract
Renal sarcoma represents 1-3% of all renal malignant tumours. Primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the kidney is a rare and highly aggressive tumor in the adult population. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old woman with a large rhabdomyosarcoma of the left kidney and associated adrenal cortical adenoma. Rhabdomyo sarcoma is a very rare tumor in adults but it needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis among undifferentiated malignant tumors.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of tumor volume on prognosis and the relation of tumor volume with other prognostic factors in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 46 retrospectively assessed patients with RCC (32 males and 14 females; mean age, 58.13±10.47 years) who underwent surgery between January 2002 and January 2009. Patients were staged according to clinical, radiological, and pathological data. The basic radiological characteristics of tumors and tumor volumes were defined by two observers. The clinical information and the last health status of all patients were recorded. The life duration of the patients after surgery was determined, and cumulative survival rates were calculated. RESULTS The survival rates showed no difference between the male and female patients (P = 0.569); the five-year survival was 75.7% and 78.5%, respectively. The survival rates demonstrated differences between groups according to potential prognostic markers such as cell type, Fuhrman's grade, the diameter, invasion of perinephric fat, sinus, or adrenal gland, pathological stage, and presence of metastasis. The inter- and intra-observer reliability of radiological volume measurements were 93.6% and 100%, respectively (P < 0.001). Two groups of tumor volume (i.e., smaller and greater than 110 cm < sup > 3 < /sup > ) showed statistically significant difference in terms of survival (P < 0.032). In univariate analysis, only Fuhrman's grade and T stage were independent prognostic variables. CONCLUSION Tumor volume is predictive of survival in patients with RCC; however, it does not appear to be an independent prognostic factor. The prognostic factors for overall survival are Fuhrman's grade and T stage.

Abstract
Forty cows between day 1 and day 21 post-calving were examined for the presence of postpartum metritis in a dairy herd that had recently experienced an increase in metritis and that had previously tested positive against bovine herpes virus 4 (BoHV-4) by various methods. Antibodies against BoHV-4 were detected in sera from 15 of 22 cows. For the virological study, uterine swab samples of 22 cows with metritis were used and tested for BoHV-4 using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), virus isolation (VI), and immunofluorescence techniques. Twenty-two point seven per cent (5/22) of the vaginal discharge samples obtained from cows with metritis were found positive for BoHV-4 DNA by PCR. All of these samples were also positive in VI and/or immune fluorescence assay (IF). Swab samples were also tested for bacteria. Empirical therapy with a broad spectrum antibiotic (oxytetracycline) was administrated, pending culture and antibiotic sensitivity result. All cows with puerperal metritis or clinical metritis (CM) were treated with intra-uterine (i.u.) administration of oxytetracycline and with intramuscular (i.m.) injections of dinoprost tromethamine (PGF(2)α) for three consecutive days. Concurrently, with the administration of oxytetracycline and PGF(2)α, cows with a rectal temperature >39.5°C received an additional treatment with oxytetracycline (i.m) for three consecutive days. According to the antibiotic test result, on day 3 after the last oxytetracycline and PGF(2)α administrations, all cows were treated with a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (i.u.) for three consecutive days. All cows with metritis and that were positive for BoHV-4 recovered clinically after the administration of antibiotic and PGF(2)α. In conclusion, postpartum metritis cases in cows infected BoHV-4 recovered clinically following early diagnosis and prolonged treatments with a combination of antibiotics and PGF(2)α.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Prostate stones are frequently encountered during transurethral resection of the prostate in urology practice. We aimed to demonstrate the physical and chemical properties of prostate stones. We also aimed to determine possible relationship between inflammation of prostate gland and prostate stones. METHODS The consecutive patients (excluding subjects with PSA>or=4ng/ml and urolithiasis), who underwent TURP operation and who were observed to have prostatic calculi during TURP, were included in the study. The prostatic stones obtained from each patient during TURP were analysed for chemical composition and observed under electron microscopy (SEM) for structure and surface morphology. The pathological specimens were assessed by the uropathologist for the final diagnosis and existence and degree of inflammation. RESULTS Five patients were included in the study. From each patient at least three (range 3-8) samples of stones (diameter varying from 1mm up to 5mm) were obtained. The stones were made of mixed composition of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. The stones were found to have lobular surface made up of small spheres under SEM. Histopathological examination of the TURP specimens revealed being prostatic hyperplasia accompanied with inflammation of mild to severe degree. CONCLUSIONS Prostatic stones are concentrically precipitated calcium stones within the prostatic ductuli with granular grape like morphology. Histopathological inflammation seems to be associated with these prostatic calculi.

Abstract
Proteolytic enzymes serve important functions during dental enamel formation, and mutations in the kallikrein 4 (KLK4) and enamelysin (MMP20) genes cause autosomal-recessive amelogenesis imperfecta (ARAI). So far, only 1 KLK4 and 3 MMP20 mutations have been reported in ARAI kindreds. To determine whether ARAI in a family with a hypomaturation-type enamel defect is caused by mutations in the genes encoding enamel proteolytic enzymes, we performed mutational analysis on candidate genes. Mutational and haplotype analyses revealed an ARAI-causing point mutation (c.910G>A, p.A304T) in exon 6 of MMP20 that results in a single amino acid substitution in the hemopexin domain. Western blot analysis showed decreased expression of the mutant protein, but zymogram analysis demonstrated that this mutant was a functional protein. The proband and an affected brother were homozygous for the mutation, and both unaffected parents were carriers. The enamel of newly erupted teeth had normal thickness, but was chalky white and became darker with age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine ezrin's association with clinicopathologic features and to investigate the possible effects of the presence of ezrin on the differential diagnosis of subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). STUDY DESIGN Ezrin reactivity was examined immunohistochemically in tumor tissues obtained from 78 patients who underwent radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma. Correlation between ezrin expression and RCC subtypes was investigated and compared with tumor stage, grade and other clinicopathologic parameters. RESULTS There was no correlation between ezrin expression and clinicopathologic features. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between ezrin reactivity and subtypes of RCC (p = 0.002). Ezrin reactivity was observed mainly in conventional, papillary and mucinous tubular spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC) subtypes of RCC, while none of the chromophobe RCC was positive for ezrin. Sarcomatoid and unclassified subtypes of RCC were found to be faint and/or negative for ezrin reactivity. CONCLUSION Investigation of ezrin reactivity may be beneficial as an additional diagnostic marker in the differential diagnosis of RCC subtypes. Also, it seems to be useful to designate the origin of MTSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine the effects of human amniotic fluid and membrane in the treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures, 72 tendons of 36 Wistar rats were injected with betamethasone sodium phosphate. METHODS By the end of fourth week, both tendons were tenotomized and repaired, then the samples were divided into three groups. The first group was left untreated after suturing. Human amniotic fluid was injected to the second and amniotic fluid and membrane were both administered to the third group. Twenty-four tendons were scored at the end of the first week, and 24 at the end of the second week histopathologically, and 24 biomechanically at the end of the third week. RESULTS There was a significant statistical difference only between the histopathological results of Groups 2 and 3 at the first week. CONCLUSIONS Human amniotic membrane and fluid do not add anything to the healing process of Achilles tendon ruptures in the early phase.

Abstract
We report herein an unusual case of metachronous triple cancers (rectum, prostate and Philadelphia(+) [Ph(+)] chronic myeloid leukemia [CML]). A metastatic rectal cancer was diagnosed in a 76-year-old male patient, who was treated with transanal tumor resection and chemotherapy. Thirty months from the initial rectal cancer diagnosis, prostate cancer was diagnosed and the patient was administered maximal androgen blockade and received palliative radiotherapy to the lumbar spine because of painful bone metastases. Thirty months after the diagnosis of rectal cancer and 12 months after the diagnosis of prostate cancer the patient developed Ph(+) CML and imatinib treatment was started. After one-year period in remission, CML evolved into accelerated phase and the patient died of intracranial hemorrhage.

Abstract
Amiodarone (AD)-induced pulmonary toxicity is one of the major complications of long-term AD therapy. Technetium-99m-labeled D: ,L: -hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (Tc-99m HMPAO) scintigraphy has been used to assess lung injury. We designed this study to clarify lung uptake changes of Tc-99m HMPAO using low doses of AD (5 mg/kg/day) during long-term therapy in a rabbit model. Group 1 consisted of 7 rabbits fed with AD by gavage for 6 months. To investigate the effect of ketamine on Tc-99m HMPAO uptake, 5 rabbits were included in Group 2 as a control group. Tc-99m HMPAO scintigraphy was performed in both Group 1 and Group 2 at baseline and after 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks of AD intake. After 16, 20, and 24 weeks of drug intake, Tc-99m HMPAO scintigraphy was repeated only in group 1. One-min anterior images were acquired 30 min after the injection of 37 MBq of Tc-99m HMPAO. For semiquantitative evaluation, the mean count values were obtained and lung/background and liver/background ratios were calculated. Histopathologic evaluation was performed. No increase in lung and liver uptake of Tc-99m HMPAO was found 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks after drug intake. There was no significant increase in L/B and H/B ratios of Tc-99m HMPAO in Group 1 compared with Group 2. Both scintigraphic studies and histopathologic examinations showed nonspecific changes. Longitudinal studies investigating Tc-99m HMPAO lung uptake may be planned in patients carrying risk factors for AD-induced lung toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the expression of HSP70 and pS2 and to determine whether it may be an additional prognostic variable in the prediction of recurrence and survival in rectal adenocarcinomas. METHODS The paraffin sections of 45 patients with rectal carcinoma who were treated with surgical resection were stained with HSP70 and pS2 antibodies by using the standard biotin immunoperoxidase method. Cytoplasmic staining for both antibodies was scored semiquantitatively. RESULTS Only 16 (35.6%) tumors showed a positive cytoplasmic reaction with HSP70 antibody, while pS2 expression was observed in 26 (57.8%) tumors. There was an association between HSP70 and pS2 expression (P=0.002). No correlations were found between HSP70 and pS2 expression and tumor recurrence or overall survival and other prognostic factors. However, the type of surgical resection was significantly associated with pS2 expression status (P=0.013). Significant correlations were detected between tumor recurrence and other clinicopathologic parameters, such as clinical stage, lymph node involvement, and resection type (P=0.015, P=0.015, and P=0.03, respectively). Resection type was significantly associated with clinical outcome, recurrence, and metastasis (P=0.009, P=0.03, P<0.01, respectively). In addition, there was a statistically significant relationship between clinical stage and final outcome (P=0.005). CONCLUSIONS The strong correlation between pS2 expression and incomplete surgical resection suggests that pS2 may be related to invasive tumor behavior and may also play a role in tumor recurrence, although this latter association did not reach statistical significance in this study. HSP70 expression does not appear to be related to tumor invasiveness or tumor recurrence.

Abstract
Transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) is a coitally transmitted neoplasm of dogs and is common among sexually active dogs, where sexual behaviour is not under control. Several treatment options are available for the treatment of the tumour, with chemotherapy being the most commonly employed. In this study, we investigated the clinical and cytological changes after weekly vincristine sulphate administration in 38 cases of naturally occurring TVT. Tumours totally regressed in 31 dogs after two to seven doses (mean 3.54 +/- 1.01) of vincristine. One dog died after the fifth dose of vincristine, and in six dogs, an additional treatment with doxorubicin was needed. Masses were still present in four dogs and the histopathological examination revealed small nodules of granulation tissue in two dogs, while viable tumour cells were identified in the remaining two cases. No recurrences were observed in a follow-up period of 7-49 months (mean 13.64 +/- 9.66); in one dog, granulation tissue was detected in the surgery site after 2 months. Treatment success could easily be followed by the cytological changes. In conclusion, vincristine was found to be effective chemotherapeutic agent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to investigate the prognostic significance of p53 and mdm2 protein expressions in epithelial ovarian cancer and their relationship with the clinicopathological variables. METHODS Tumor biopsy specimens from 82 patients who were homogenously treated were examined immunohistochemically for expression of p53 and mdm2 proteins. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed for prognostic factors, and correlations with clinicopathological parameters were examined. RESULTS Fifty-four percent and 33% of cases stained positive for p53 and mdm2, respectively. p53 expression was associated with serous type, higher grade, positive cytology, residual tumor and stage of the disease. mdm2 expression predicted of chemosensitivity and it was related with higher grade but not with other clinicopathological variables. Significantly poorer survival was seen for those with p53 (P < 0.05) or mdm2 (P < 0.01) positive tumors than those with negative p53 or mdm2 staining. Coexpression of p53 and mdm2 was also related to poor outcome (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that FIGO stage, mdm2 expression, response to chemotherapy and optimal cytoreduction were significant independent prognostic and predictive factors of survival. CONCLUSION Although our findings showed that mdm2 may be used as a prognostic indicator in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, these results should be supported by more and larger studies.

Abstract
We report a case of a urothelial carcinoma with trophoblastic differentiation of the bladder that occured in a 23-year-old man. The patient presented with hematuria. Multiple papillary masses were resected transurethrally. Histopathologically, grade III urothelial cell carcinoma contained giant cells that were positive for human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG), placental alkalen phosphatase, and human placental lactogen. HCG secreting tumors are reported to be highly aggressive. The patient is alive and well without evidence of recurrent disease or metastasis at 10 months from transurethral resection. To our knowledge, this case is the youngest patient in the literature so far.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnant women with female fetuses have higher maternal serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels than pregnant women with male fetuses. Ki-67, a cell proliferation and activity marker, is confined mostly in the nuclei of villous cytotrophoblasts of the human placenta. In this study, we examined the effect of fetal gender on the cytotrophoblast cell activity in human term placenta, with special regard to maternal serum and cord blood hCG levels. METHODS Thirty-four uncomplicated, singleton, term pregnancies (17 male and 17 female fetuses) were recruited in the study. hCG was measured in maternal peripheral serum and umbilical cord blood. Placental samples were collected in each patient during the cesarean section. Cytotrophoblast cell activity was measured by using immunohistochemistry for Ki-67 antigen. Ki-67 staining index values of the cytotrophoblasts were compared between the female and male placentas. RESULTS Maternal serum and cord blood hCG levels were higher in pregnant women with female fetuses than in those carrying male fetuses. There was no sex difference in Ki-67 immunostaining rates of the cytotrophoblast cells. There was no correlation between maternal serum and cord blood hCG levels and Ki-67 staining index values of the cytotrophoblast cells. CONCLUSIONS The difference in maternal serum and cord blood hCG levels in correlation with the fetal gender is not associated with cytotrophoblast cell activity in the human term placenta. The gender of the fetus does not seem to affect the regulation of cytotrophoblast cell proliferation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the expression of p53 and mdm2 and to determine whether they may be used as additional predictors of recurrence in superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Paraffin sections of 80 patients with superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, who were treated with transurethral resection, were stained with p53 and mdm2 antibodies using the standard avidin biotin immunoperoxidase method. Nuclear staining for both p53 and mdm2 was calculated as the percentage of labeled nuclei out of a total number of tumor cells counted. The percentage of p53- and mdm2-positive cells showed a significant relationship with tumor grade and recurrence (p = 0.002 and p = 0.016; p = 0.01 and p = 0.003, respectively). In addition, a weak inverse relationship was found between p53 and mdm2 values (r = -0.184). p53 and mdm2 reactivities are valuable parameters in predicting recurrence in superficial bladder cancer. Thus, mdm2 expression appears to play a role in predicting biologic behavior in superficial transitional carcinoma of the bladder.

Abstract
We investigated pS2 and HSP-70 protein expression in 36 pancreatic adenocarcinomas for their effect on disease extent and patient outcome. The cases were reviewed, histologically diagnosed, typed, graded, and staged. Lymphatic vessel, blood vessel and perineural invasion as well as lymph node, resection margin and adjacent organ involvements were re-evaluated. The standard streptavidin biotin immunperoxidase method was used for immunostaining with pS2 and HSP-70 antibodies. Cytoplasmic staining with both antibodies was scored semiquantitatively. The scores were compared with histopathological prognostic parameters using statistical methods. Standard prognostic parameters and staining scores were tested by survival analysis in terms of their effect on survival. All the tumors showed a positive cytoplasmic reaction with HSP-70 antibody. Seventy-seven percent of the tumors showed positive cytoplasmic staining with pS2 antibody (22.2% +, 13.9% ++ and 41.7% +++). There was a statistically significant difference between HSP-70 staining scores with N status and final stages of the tumors (Chi-square, p = 0.03 and p = 0.026, respectively), while neither direct nor inverse correlation was detected for both parameters. PS2 staining scores showed no statistically significant relationship with tumor grade T, M status, perineural invasion, lymph and blood vessel invasion. In tumors with extensive staining with pS2, tumor stage tended to be low (Chi square, p = 0.024, Kendall Tau-b, r: -0.336, p = 0.036). There was a statistically significant difference and inverse correlation between tumors with extensive pS2 staining and tumors with less intense staining in terms of lymph node metastasis (Chi-square, p = 0.041, Kendall Tau: p = 0.024, r = -0,373). In the R0 resection group, in univariate analysis, we found that with higher scores of HSP-70 staining, the prognosis of the patient tended to improve. (Cox regression, p = 0.013). In multivariate analysis, HSP-70 expression was found to be an independent prognostic factor. We found no relationship between pS2 staining and patient survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The tissue damage due to hypoxia in newborns is to some extent age-dependent; organs of premature babies are more vulnerable to hypoxic insult than full-term neonates. The aim of this immunohistochemical study was to investigate the role of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), a stress-inducible protein, in developing the response to hypoxia in premature newborns. METHODS Postnatal day-7 rats (corresponding to a human fetus of 32-34 weeks' gestation) and day-12 rats (corresponding to a full-term newborn infant) (n = 7) were subjected to mild hypoxia at 33 degrees C. Control rats (n = 7) for each group breathed room air for 4 h. After 4 h of recovery, the animals were killed, and brains, hearts and kidneys were removed for immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS Immunohistochemically, HSP70 expression was found to be induced in the hippocampus and myocardium after exposure to hypoxia. The level of HSP70 expression in the hippocampus after hypoxic stress was significantly higher in the 12-day rats than in the 7-day rats (p = 0.03). However, HSP70 expression in the myocardium did not show any significant difference between the two groups. In addition, no significant induction of HSP70 expression was apparent in the kidney of rats exposed to hypoxia or in any organ of the control animals. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that diminished HSP70 expression in the hippocampus of premature newborns may play a critical role in developing the response to hypoxic stress. However, HSP70 expression in the heart and the kidney after exposure to hypoxia did not appear to be related to fetal maturity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the expression and possible role of pS2 protein as a predictor of tumor recurrence in superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and to determine its relation with tumor stage, grade, size, number, recurrence and proliferative activity. METHODS Paraffin sections of transurethral resection material from 80 patients with superficial transitional cell bladder carcinoma were stained with pS2 and Ki-67 antibodies using the standard streptavidin biotin immunoperoxidase method. Cytoplasmic pS2 staining was scored on a scale of 1-3 and the Ki-67-labelling index was determined as a percentage of positively staining tumor cells. RESULTS An inverse relationship was found between pS2 expression and Ki-67 index (p<0.001). pS2 expression showed no relation with any clinicopathological prognostic parameters as well as the recurrence rate. The recurrence rate was only associated with increased tumor number (p = 0.05), while the time to first recurrence was significantly related to tumor size, proliferative activity and tumor grade (p = 0.04, p<0.001, and p = 0.03, respectively). On the other hand, higher tumor grade was correlated with increased tumor number, Ki-67 index and tumor stage (p = 0.016, p = 0.006, and p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION pS2 expression is associated with a low proliferative potential of superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, while it does not seem to be related to the recurrence rate of the tumor and other prognostic factors. Tumor size and proliferative activity may aid in the estimation of the time to the first recurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the role of angiogenesis in predicting tumor recurrence and its correlation with established clinicopathologic prognostic factors in superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. METHODS The paraffin sections of 80 superficial papillary transitional cell bladder carcinoma specimens were stained with CD31 antibody to label the vascular endothelium using the standard streptavidin-biotin-immunoperoxidase method. The vascular surface density (VSD) equivalent to the vascular surface area per unit of tissue volume and number of vessels per square millimeter of stroma (NVES) were assessed by means of stereology, and these morphometric parameters of angiogenesis were statistically analyzed to interpret the relation to tumor recurrence in addition to tumor stage, grade, size, and number and the presence of carcinoma in situ. RESULTS VSD and NVES values showed no statistically significant difference between pTa and pT1 tumors or patients with and without recurrence. In contrast, VSD and NVES values were found to increase in higher grade tumors (P = 0.019). VSD values were also higher in patients with coexisting carcinoma in situ in pTa tumors (P <0.001). Tumor number and size and recurrence number and time to the first recurrence did not correlate with any vascular parameters. CONCLUSIONS Stereologic assessment of angiogenesis does not help to predict recurrence in superficial bladder cancer. Angiogenic parameters appeared to be well correlated with the conventional histologic grading system. Otherwise, the present study did not show any correlation of angiogenesis with any potential prognostic factors. This may be due to the diverse angiogenic pathways occurring in invasive and superficial tumors.

Abstract
Prostate carcinoma infiltrating around ganglion cells is claimed to be diagnostic of extracapsular extension because ganglion cells are only found in periprostatic soft tissue. However, the presence of autonomic ganglion cells in the fibrous capsule of the prostate has been reported. In this study, we aimed to define the exact localization of the ganglion cells in radical prostatectomy specimens. Slides of 64 totally embedded radical prostatectomies were reviewed. The ganglion cells were noted as outside the gland if no relation could be defined with prostate capsule or prostatic glands. They were noted as in the capsule when ganglion cells were observed inside the capsule, which was easily and definitely discerned. Ganglion cells were noted as in the prostate when ganglion cells were observed beneath the capsule and in close proximity to the prostatic glands. Also, the ganglion cells were noted as in the capsule if they were observed inside the capsule but not adjacent to the prostatic glands, and as outside the prostate when the capsule could not be easily defined and distant from the prostatic glands. Ganglion cells were observed in the prostate in 12 cases (18.75%). There was no relationship of these ganglion cells with the tumor in the prostatectomy specimens. Ganglion cells were located in the capsule in 14 cases (21.9%). The ganglion cells were observed outside the prostate in the other 38 cases (59.4%). These results show that there may be ganglion cells in the prostate. Therefore, defining ganglion cell invasion by the tumor as extracapsular invasion may lead to staging error and cause erroneous management of the disease. Presence of carcinoma in ganglion cells should be recorded by defining whether these structures are within or outside the prostate gland. Prostate Cancer and Prostatic diseases (2000) 3, 34-36

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prognostic significance of biologic parameters such as angiogenesis, expression of cathepsin D (a lysosomal protease), and degradation of type IV collagen (a basement membrane protein), we studied 20 patients with primary grade III Stage T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. METHODS Endothelial cells were labeled immunohistochemically using factor VIII-related antigen. The vascular surface density (VSD) and the microvessel number (NVES) were assessed by means of stereology. The tumor tissues were also analyzed by immunohistochemical methods for the expression of cathepsin D and the staining pattern of type IV collagen. RESULTS Eight patients (40%) having either recurrence or progressive disease showed greater NVES and VSD values (P = 0.002 and P = 0.01, respectively) than patients without. The significance of vascular parameters was found to be statistically independent from coexisting carcinoma in situ, bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) treatment, tumor size, and number. Additionally, these parameters did not show statistical significance between progressive and recurrent tumors. However, tumors with solid morphologic features had higher VSD values and a significantly greater rate of recurrence or progression (P = 0.01 and P = 0.07, respectively). Tissue from 17 (85%) of 20 tumors showed absent or patchy basement membrane staining for type IV collagen, and 12 (60%) showed strong immunoreactivity for cathepsin D antibody. There were no differences for either molecule with either BCG treatment or other parameters related to prognosis. CONCLUSIONS Angiogenesis may have an independent role in predicting prognosis in grade III Stage T1 bladder carcinoma. Grade III Stage pT1 tumors with solid morphologic features have higher angiogenetic activity and a worse prognosis. Cathepsin D and type IV collagen do not seem to play a role in predicting biologic behavior.
