Impact of human activity on the distribution of native and non-native cockroach species (Dictyoptera) in La Réunion and Mayotte

Establishment of non-native species and human-driven alteration of habitats are major causes of the decline of native faunas. Interference between native and non-native cockroach species was evaluated here by comparing their distribution areas in two oceanic islands: Mayotte and La Réunion. A factorial correspondence analysis showed that their presence is related to environmental parameters among which human activity, humidity and altitude are the three most important. Human activity and humidity favour establishment and development of non-native species, whereas altitude limits their presence. Non-native species form guilds (up to seven species). Their distribution areas overlap and illustrate their colonizing capacities. On the contrary, distribution areas of native species never overlap, although some co-occur with non-native species. Native species are more endangered when they are established in cultivated areas than when they are in protected natural areas.

Exploitation of home range and spatial distribution of resources in German cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae)

We analyzed the expression of edge following behavior in German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.). Structure of the environment and spatial distribution of resources modified both expression of locomotory behavior of cockroaches and its distribution between the edge and the central area of an experimental arena. When they are in a familiar environment, German cockroaches are definitely not edge followers and they exploit similarly the different parts of the accessible surface of their home range. Cockroaches placed in a new environment tended to follow edges more than undisturbed insects. This modification could be assimilated to a response to stressful conditions.

Improvement of German cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) population control by fragmented distribution of gel baits

The aim of this study was to test the efficiency of gels in relation to fragmentation of baits and population density against the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). We hypothesized that the efficiency of cockroach control could be improved by fragmentation of gel baits, i.e., by distributing the same amount of bait in several small drops instead of one large one. Our results show that bait fragmentation increased the number of cockroaches gaining access to the gel. However, bait fragmentation increased cockroach mortality only at high population densities. Our results allow us to recommend modulation of bait application in relation to cockroach population density. At low population densities (42 individuals/m2), the recommended dose, one single 30-mg drop/m2, can be applied. At high population densities (> or = 208 individuals/m2), the same recommended dose would be more efficient if applied as several 3-mg drops.

Influence of a novel object in the home range of the cockroach, Blattella germanica

We investigated whether exploratory behaviour of the cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), was modified by the introduction of a novel object, such as a bait station, into their familiar home range. In particular, we measured the attractiveness of boxes, as novel objects, in relation to their complexity and to their contents. The presence of a novel object induced an increase of exploratory behaviour on and inside the object and its environs. Time spent around the object depended on the complexity of the object (closed box or with holes). The more complex the object, the longer cockroaches spent exploring it. When the object contained food, its attractiveness was greatly increased and it affected cockroaches from further away.

Comparisons of toxic baits for controlling the cockroach, Blattella germanica: attractiveness and feeding stimulation

Female German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) and nymphs (stages 1, 3 and 6) were used to test the attractiveness and the feeding stimulation of several commercial gel formulations of insecticide food baits in laboratory binary choice tests. The four toxic gel baits tested were: 'Avert' (0.05% abamectin=avermectin B1), 'Drax' (33.3% boric acid), 'Goliath' (0.05% fipronil) and 'Maxforce' (2.15% hydramethylnon). The attractiveness of a bait was estimated by the number of cockroaches that chose it first, and by their tendency to change to it secondarily. Feeding stimulation was estimated by the mean duration of feeding bouts and total duration of food intake. Variability of these factors was assessed in relation to age of cockroaches and to age of baits. With a few exceptions, cockroach age did not affect performance in any of these tests. Attractiveness to B. germanica ranked 'Goliath' gel higher than 'Avert', 'Drax' and 'Maxforce' gels, whether or not the active ingredient fipronil was present in 'Goliath' gel. Feeding stimulation ranked 'Avert' and 'Maxforce' gels higher than 'Goliath' gel, and 'Drax' gel was inferior. With ageing up to 3 months, the feeding stimulation power of 'Goliath' and 'Maxforce' gels increased, whereas that of 'Avert' fluctuated. Assuming that all types of bait effectively kill cockroaches once ingested, these results illustrate the importance of behavioural observations on bait efficiency and show that ranking of these different food baits varies in relation to the parameter analysed.

Secondary transmission of toxic baits in German cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae)

The death rates of three toxic gel baits (fipronil bait, 0.05%; hydramethylnon, bait 2.15%; and abamectin B1 bait, 0.05%) were estimated in Blattella germanica (L.). After ingestion, all three baits killed similar proportions of cockroaches, but they died more rapidly after ingestion of fipronil bait than after ingestion of abamectin B1 bait or of hydramethylnon bait. Laboratory experiments evaluated the impact of secondary transmission of fipronil bait and hydramethylnon bait. Mortality rates caused by secondary transmission were higher for fipronil bait than for hydramethylnon bait. Under controlled laboratory conditions, secondary transmission occurred mainly through direct contact with, or ingestion of, traces of baits dispersed in the environment by contaminated cockroaches. These traces were either deposited by "trampling" in the environment or on dead contaminated cockroaches. Social interactions and cannibalism played a minor role in secondary transmission of these two baits.

Comparative genetic diversity of parasites and their hosts: population structure of an urban cockroach and its haplo-diploid parasite (oxyuroid nematode)

Few studies have investigated the genetic structure of both host and parasite populations at a level of populations and at a level of individuals. We investigated the genetic structure of the urban cockroach Blattella germanica and its oxyuroid parasite Blatticola blattae. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to quantify genetic diversity between and within four populations (from two cities in France) of the host and its parasite. Diversity based on phenotypic frequencies was calculated for each RAPD marker using Shannon-Wiener's index. We used multivariate analyses to test the significance of genetic differentiation between host and parasite populations. Analysis of molecular variance was also used. Both methods gave similar results. Diversity between pairs of individuals was estimated by Nei & Li's index. Genetic diversity was higher within host or parasite populations (80% and 82%, respectively, of explained diversity) than between host or parasite populations (20% and 18%, respectively, explained diversity). The genetic distances between pairs of parasite populations (or individuals) were not correlated with the genetic distances between the corresponding pairs of host populations (or individuals).

Cuticular extracts inducing aggregation in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.)

German cockroaches Blattella germanica (L.) are gregarious insects. An aggregation pheromone contributes to the maintenance of aggregates. Choice experiments checked the efficiency of different solvents, i.e. dichloromethane, methanol and pentane, in extracting attractive substances and compared the attractiveness of extracts of different parts of the body. Dichloromethane and pentane were the most efficient solvents tested for extracting the attractive substances. Methanol whole body extracts appeared inefficient to induce aggregation. The proportion of larvae attracted to conditioned papers decreased in relation to the size of cuticular surface washed, from whole body to half-body and again to a section of the body cut in three. Attractive substances appear to be present on all parts of the body. Chemical analysis by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that the active extracts contained only cuticular hydrocarbons. In addition to behavioural tests, differences between the composition of methanol extracts and that of the extracts for the other two solvents were revealed by GC. These results indicated that the cuticular hydrocarbons operate as an aggregation pheromone in Blattella germanica.

Use of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) for generating specific DNA probes for oxyuroid species (Nematoda)

Random amplified DNA markers (RAPD; Williams et al., 1990) were used to obtained specific RAPD fragments characterising different species of oxyuroids. We tested six species of worms parasitizing vertebrates or invertebrates: Passalurus ambiguus Rudolphi, 1819, parasite of Leporids; Syphacia obvelata (Rudolphi, 1802) Seurat, 1916, a parasite of rodents; Blatticola blattae (Graeffe, 1860) Chitwood, 1932 parasite of the cockroach Blattella germanica; Hammerschmidtiella diesingi (Hammerschmidt, 1838) Chitwood, 1932 and Thelastoma bulhoesi (Magalhaes, 1990) Travassos, 1929, parasites of the cockroach Periplaneta americana, and an undescribed parasite species of a passalid insect from New Caledonia. Among 15 oligonucleotides tested, nine produced several specific bands allowing the interspecific discrimination.

Cockroach aggregation: discrimination between strain odours in Blattella germanica

Behavioural experiments on gregariousness in larval German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), confirmed that this species deposits an aggregation pheromone by body contact. Choice tests with groups of larvae indicated that they were preferentially attracted to papers conditioned by the odour of their conspecifics, although they were able to aggregate on clean paper in the absence of cockroach odour. Individual larvae were able to recognize the odour of their own population or strain in the absence of conspecifics. The odour was produced and perceived by larvae at all developmental stages. We report, for the first time, experiments comparing the relative attractiveness of odours of strains from different locations: larval cockroaches were able to discriminate and recognize the odour of members of their own strain. Our results showed that different strains have variations of a specific odour. All experimental strains had similar discriminatory capacities and all preferred the odour of their own strain. When larvae were presented with a choice between odours from two unfamiliar strains, they appeared to avoid these odours. Copyright 1998 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.

Bacterial load of cockroaches in relation to urban environment

Sanitation is an important problem in relation to the control of pests in urban environments. This investigation analysed the potential risk related to the presence of cockroaches and their capacity for disseminating bacteria in six different types of buildings: hospital nursing area and out-patient area, swimming-pool pool-side and toilet area, low-income flats and food-handling places. Fifty-six species of bacteria were identified from 157 samples, 14 of these have previously been reported as potentially pathogenic for man and vertebrates. Similarities were found between samples collected in (a) the hospital out-patient area and food-handling establishments and (b) the hospital nursing area and flats. Pool-sides possessed a poorer bacterial flora. There was a greater bacterial specific diversity in food-handling establishments, flats and swimming-bath toilet area. Enterobacter cloacae. Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca were dominant species in flats and the hospital nursing area. Therefore, cockroaches can play a role in disseminating bacteria, which they can carry passively on their cuticle.

Cockroaches as carriers of bacteria in multi-family dwellings

The potential risk of bacterial dissemination due to the presence of cockroaches (Blattella germanica, Blattellidae) in low-income flats was investigated. Cockroaches can carry a great variety of bacterial species; we identified 30 different species from 52 different flats. Klebsiella oxycytoca, K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae were the most frequently found. Pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria represented 54% of all the bacterial identifications. Bacteria were carried either on the cuticle or in the gut. Contamination through external contact is sufficient to insure bacterial diffusion. There was a very low level of overlap estimated by Pianka's index (a) between the bacterial flora of neighbouring blocks of flats, and (b) between bacterial flora of different flats in the same block.

Microbial organisms carried by brown-banded cockroaches in relation to their spatial distribution in a hospital

A simultaneous study of cockroach (Supella supellectilium) distribution and of associated carried bacterial flora has been made in the main hospital in Rennes (France). Wild cockroaches carry a high number of bacterial species that can be related to the normal environmental flora and a contaminant flora acquired from particular environments. The diversity of carried bacterial species reveals a proximity factor between continguous floors of the building which leads us to suppose that cockroaches are able to forage from one floor to the other.
