Design and Optimization of Novel Benzimidazole- and Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-Based ATM Kinase Inhibitors with Subnanomolar Activities

The ATM kinase is a promising target in cancer treatment as an important regulator of the cellular response to DNA double-strand breaks. In this work, we present a new class of specific benzimidazole-based ATM inhibitors with picomolar potency against the isolated enzyme and favorable selectivity within relative PIKK and PI3K kinases. We could identify two promising inhibitor subgroups with significantly different physicochemical properties, which we developed simultaneously. These efforts lead to numerous highly active inhibitors with picomolar enzymatic activities. Furthermore, initial low cellular activities on A549 cells could be increased significantly in numerous examples resulting in cellular IC₅₀ values in the subnanomolar range. Further characterization of the highly potent inhibitors 90 und 93 revealed promising pharmacokinetic properties and strong activities in organoids in combination with etoposide. Additionally, 93 showed no off-target activities within a kinome-representative mini kinase panel, with favorable selectivities within the PIKK- and PI3K-families.

Electronuclear Transition into a Spatially Modulated Magnetic State in YbRh_{2}Si_{2}

The nature of the antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion metal YbRh_{2}Si_{2}, its quantum criticality, and superconductivity, which appears at low mK temperatures, remain open questions. We report measurements of the heat capacity over the wide temperature range 180  μK-80  mK, using current sensing noise thermometry. In zero magnetic field we observe a remarkably sharp heat capacity anomaly at 1.5 mK, which we identify as an electronuclear transition into a state with spatially modulated electronic magnetic order of maximum amplitude 0.1  μ_{B}. We also report results of measurements in magnetic fields in the range 0 to 70 mT, applied perpendicular to the c axis, which show eventual suppression of this order. These results demonstrate a coexistence of a large moment antiferromagnet with putative superconductivity.

Branched medium-chain fatty acid profiling and enantiomer separation of anteiso-forms of teicoplanin fatty acyl side chain RS3 using UHPLC-MS/MS with polysaccharide columns

This work reports on targeted UHPLC-tandem mass spectrometry methods for the chiral separation of anteiso-methyl branched fatty acids (aiFAs). The methods involve precolumn derivatization with 1-naphthylamine and chiral separation on Chiralpak IG-U. anteiso-Methyl branched fatty acids with up to eight carbons can be separated. A method was used for the assignment of the absolute configuration of an aiFA present as fatty acyl residue of the teicoplanin mixture, namely teicoplanin RS3. Furthermore, the excellent methylene selectivity and improved selectivity for constitutional isomers of the polysaccharide columns was exploited for the elucidation and structural confirmation of previously unknown fatty acyl residues in teicoplanin. This shows the versatility and practical applicability of polysaccharide columns as orthogonal stationary phases to reversed-phase for structural elucidation of natural compounds. The developed methods are useful tools for related subdisciplines such as targeted metabolomics and lipidomics.

Development and chromatographic exploration of stable-bonded crosslinked amino silica against classical amino phases

The present work reports on a novel stable-bonded amino silica stationary phase obtained by crosslinking of surface aminopropyl moieties using triglycidyl isocyanurate. The obtained crosslinked amido-amino network silica material exhibited superior hydrolytic stability compared to classical 3-aminopropyl phases and showed, inter alia, excellent separation of nine therapeutically effective sulfonamides in hydrophilic interaction / weak anion exchange chromatography elution mode. Additionally, the separation of carbohydrates was investigated under classical hydrophilic interaction chromatography conditions as well proving the suitability of the novel phase for such applications. For the evaluation of the hydrolytic stability the prepared material, as well as two commercially available benchmark columns and a set of in-house synthesized amino modified materials, were exposed to harsh aqueous mobile phase conditions for in total 50 hours at elevated temperature. In this context, the materials were examined by elemental analysis, (¹³ C and ²⁹ Si cross-polarization/magic angle spinning) solid-state NMR and a chromatographic test before and subsequent to the exposure to these stress conditions. Lastly, the new stationary phase was classified in comparison to a set of commercially available stationary phases by principal component analysis of resultant retention factors gained from chromatographic standard tests. Study of microheterogeneity of silatrane-based silica surface bonding chemistry and its optimization for the synthesis of chiral stationary phases for enantioselective liquid chromatography

The present work systematically investigates the chemical microheterogeneity as part of the optimization of a single-step surface bonding chemistry of 3-mercaptopropylsilatrane (MPS) on mesoporous silica gel in comparison to the state-of-the-art silane chemistry with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). MPS functionalization turns out to be a favourable chemistry for the further use in thiol-ene click reactions such as the immobilization of chiral selectors, herein tert-butylcarbamoylquinine (tBuCQN), for the synthesis of chiral stationary phases (CSPs). MPS has higher reactivity than MPTMS and prefers the formation of trifunctional siloxane bondings unlike MPTMS which favours difunctional siloxane bonds to silica, as investigated by solid-state cross-polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) NMR (²⁹Si and ¹³C nuclei). Reaction conditions (ternary mixtures of methanol, water and toluene; with and without acid; prewetting of silica; HCl pretreatment of silica) were evaluated with the aim to find conditions which promote the formation of a horizontal siloxane polymer layer on top of the silica surface. Silanization reaction times could be reduced to 2 h. The ²⁹Si NMR signal corresponding to trifunctional siloxane bonding could be increased to 60% with no T1 signal that refers to monofunctional siloxane bonding in spite of water in the ternary reaction mixture. Furthermore, no significant disulfide bridges were formed in this approach, leading to high selector loadings. The thiol and selector coverage reached up to 4.6 and 1.4 µmol/m², respectively. With the preferred CSP, the enantioselectivity could be increased for a chiral probe (FMOC-Phe) and the mass transfer resistance (C-term) bisected compared to the corresponding CSP prepared from benchmark MPTMS-modified silica (2.54 vs 5.72 ms). It is demonstrated that the fine-tuning of the microstructure on the silica surface can have a significant influence on enantioselectivity and mass transfer kinetics of the resultant CSPs.

High Plasticity of the Amicetin Biosynthetic Pathway in Streptomyces sp. SHP 22-7 Led to the Discovery of Streptcytosine P and Cytosaminomycins F and G and Facilitated the Production of 12F-Plicacetin

A chemical reinvestigation of the Indonesian strain Streptomyces sp. SHP 22-7 led to the isolation of three new pyrimidine nucleosides, along with six known analogues and zincphyrin. The structures of the new compounds (6, 7, 10) were elucidated by employing spectroscopic techniques (NMR, MS, CD, and IR) as well as enantioselective analyses of methyl branched side chain configurations. Application of the precursor-directed feeding approach led to the production and partial isolation of nine further pyrimidine analogues. The new compounds 6, 7, and 11 and three of the known compounds (2-4) were found to possess antimycobacterial and cytotoxic properties.

DoE Optimization Empowers the Automated Preparation of Enantiomerically Pure [18F]Talazoparib and its In Vivo Evaluation as a PARP Radiotracer

Given the clinical potential of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARP) imaging for the detection and stratification of various cancers, the development of novel PARP imaging probes with improved pharmacological profiles over established PARP imaging agents is warranted. Here, we present a novel 18F-labeled PARP radiotracer based on the clinically superior PARP inhibitor talazoparib. An automated radiosynthesis of [18F]talazoparib (RCY: 13 ± 3.4%; n = 4) was achieved using a "design of experiments" (DoE) optimized copper-mediated radiofluorination reaction. The chiral product was isolated from the reaction mixture using 2D reversed-phase/chiral radio-HPLC (>99% ee). (8S,9R)-[18F]Talazoparib demonstrated PARP binding in HCC1937 cells in vitro and showed an excellent tumor-to-blood ratio in xenograft-bearing mice (10.2 ± 1.5). Additionally, a favorable pharmacological profile in terms of excretion, metabolism, and target engagement was observed. This synthesis of [18F]talazoparib exemplifies how DoE can enable the radiosyntheses of synthetically challenging radiolabeled compounds of high interest to the imaging community.

Enantioselective multiple heart cutting online two-dimensional liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry of all proteinogenic amino acids with second dimension chiral separations in one-minute time scales on a chiral tandem column

In this work, we present a unique, robust and fully automated analytical platform technology for the enantioselective amino acid analysis using a multiple heart cutting RPLC-enantio/stereoselective HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS method. This 2D-LC method allows the full enantioselective separation of 20 proteinogenic AAs plus 5 isobaric analogues, namely allo-Threonine (aThr), homoserine (Hse), allo-isoleucine (aIle), tert-Leucine (Tle) and Norleucine (Nle), after pre-column derivatization with 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate (AQC; AccQ). This N-terminal AA-derivatization method introduces on the one hand beneficial chromatographic properties for ¹D RP-LC (stronger retention) and ²D chiral separation (better chiral recognition), and on the other hand favorable detection properties with its chromophoric, fluorophoric, and easily ionizable quinoline mass tag. The entire separation occurs within a total 2DLC run time of 45 min, which includes the ¹D-RP run and the 68 s ²D chiral separations of 30 heart-cuts (from the ¹D-RP-run) on a chiral quinine carbamate (core-shell QNAX/fully porous ZWIX) tandem column. This relatively short overall run time was only possible by utilizing the highly efficient "smart peak parking" algorithm for the heart cuts and the resulting optimized analysis order thereof. ¹D retention time precisions of <0.21% RSD were a requirement for the time-based sampling mode and finally led to a robust, fully automated enantioselective amino acid analysis platform. This achiral-chiral 2DLC method was applied for the amino acid stereoconfiguration assignment of three peptides (aureobasidin A, a lipopeptide research sample, and octreotide) using an L-[u-¹³C¹⁵N] labelled internal AA standard mix spiked to each sample. The isotopically labelled L-AA standard allowed an easy and straightforward identification and configuration assignment, as well as the relative quantification of amino acids within the investigated peptides, allowing the direct determination of the number of respective amino acids and their chirality within a peptide.

Field-induced transition within the superconducting state of CeRh2As2

Materials with multiple superconducting phases are rare. Here, we report the discovery of two-phase unconventional superconductivity in CeRh₂As₂ Using thermodynamic probes, we establish that the superconducting critical field of its high-field phase is as high as 14 tesla, even though the transition temperature is only 0.26 kelvin. Furthermore, a transition between two different superconducting phases is observed in a c axis magnetic field. Local inversion-symmetry breaking at the cerium sites enables Rashba spin-orbit coupling alternating between the cerium sublayers. The staggered Rashba coupling introduces a layer degree of freedom to which the field-induced transition and high critical field seen in experiment are likely related.

Addressing a Trapped High-Energy Water: Design and Synthesis of Highly Potent Pyrimidoindole-Based Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3β Inhibitors

In small molecule binding, water is not a passive bystander but rather takes an active role in the binding site, which may be decisive for the potency of the inhibitor. Here, by addressing a high-energy water, we improved the IC₅₀ value of our co-crystallized glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) inhibitor by nearly two orders of magnitude. Surprisingly, our results demonstrate that this high-energy water was not displaced by our potent inhibitor (S)-3-(3-((7-ethynyl-9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indol-4-yl)(methyl)amino)piperidin-1-yl)propanenitrile ((S)-15, IC₅₀ value of 6 nM). Instead, only a subtle shift in the location of this water molecule resulted in a dramatic decrease in the energy of this high-energy hydration site, as shown by the WaterMap analysis combined with microsecond timescale molecular dynamics simulations. (S)-15 demonstrated both a favorable kinome selectivity profile and target engagement in a cellular environment and reduced GSK-3 autophosphorylation in neuronal SH-SY5Y cells. Overall, our findings highlight that even a slight adjustment in the location of a high-energy water can be decisive for ligand binding.

Preparation and characterization of poly(3-mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane functionalized silica particles and their further modification for silver ion chromatography and enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography

The present work reports on the preparation of polythiol-functionalized silica particles by thermally and photo-initiated radical addition reactions using poly(3-mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane (PMPMS) as sulfhydryl group-rich surface modification reagent. Prior to surface modification with PMPMS, the silica was vinylized with vinyl trimethoxysilane. Finally, the usefulness of the thiolated silica particles was demonstrated by their further modification for various HPLC applications such as argentation chromatography and chiral separations. Aiming at a sulfhydryl group-rich, thin PMPMS layer on the surface of the silica several factors such as quantity of PMPMS, radical starter and reaction time were investigated by a design of experiment (DoE) approach. In thermally induced polymerization reactions 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) was used as radical starter, in photo-induced reactions 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA) was used instead. The incorporation of PMPMS was evaluated by elemental analysis and reactive and accessible sulfhydryl groups were determined by performing a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction with 2,2'-dipyridyl disulfide (DPDS). Consequently, thiol-functionalized silica particles (200 Å, 5 µm) with 1.81 ± 0.07 µmol sulfhydryl groups per m² were prepared and further functionalized for silver ion chromatography and chiral separation chromatography clearly proving its utility as platform for further silica functionalization. The fabricated stationary phase for silver ion chromatography showed promising separation abilities for fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) according to the amount of double bonds within the fatty acid residue and cis- and trans-stilbene as model molecule for cis-trans isomerism. After the successful incorporation of O-tert-butylcarbamoyl quinine (tBuCQN) as chiral selector via thiol-ene click chemistry onto the PMPMS layer, the obtained chiral stationary phases (CSP) showed good separation of derivatized amino acids in polar organic elution mode comparable with a column based on commercially available CHIRALPAK QN-AX silica particles (120 Å, 5 µm).

Uniaxial and fourfold basal anisotropy in GdRh2Si2

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of GdRh₂Si₂ is examined in detail via the electron spin resonance (ESR) of its well-localised Gd³⁺ moments. Below T _N = 107 K, long range magnetic order sets in with ferromagnetic layers in the (aa)-plane stacked antiferromagnetically along the c-axis of the tetragonal structure. Interestingly, the easy-plane anisotropy allows for the observation of antiferromagnetic resonance at X- and Q-band microwave frequencies. In addition to the easy-plane anisotropy we have also quantified the weaker fourfold anisotropy within the easy plane. The obtained resonance fields are modelled in terms of eigenoscillations of the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices. Conversely, this model provides plots of the eigenfrequencies as a function of field and the specific anisotropy constants. Such calculations have rarely been done. Therefore our analysis is prototypical for other systems with fourfold in-plane anisotropy. It is demonstrated that the experimental in-plane ESR data may be crucial for a precise knowledge of the out-of-plane anisotropy.

Electron Doping of the Iron-Arsenide Superconductor CeFeAsO Controlled by Hydrostatic Pressure

In the iron-pnictide material CeFeAsO not only the Fe moments, but also the local 4f moments of the Ce order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. We elucidate on the peculiar role of the Ce on the emergence of superconductivity. While application of pressure suppresses the iron SDW ordering temperature monotonously up to 4 GPa, the Ce-4f magnetism is stabilized until both types of magnetic orders disappear abruptly and a narrow SC dome develops. With further increasing pressure characteristics of a Kondo-lattice system become more and more apparent in the electrical resistivity. This suggests a connection of the emergence of superconductivity with the extinction of the magnetic order and the onset of Kondo screening of the Ce-4f moments.

Discovery and Evaluation of Enantiopure 9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles as Nanomolar GSK-3β Inhibitors with Improved Metabolic Stability

Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) is a potential target in the field of Alzheimer's disease drug discovery. We recently reported a new class of 9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indole-based GSK-3β inhibitors, of which 3-(3-((7-chloro-9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indol-4-yl)(methyl)amino)piperidin-1-yl)propanenitrile (1) demonstrated promising inhibitory potency. However, this compound underwent rapid degradation by human liver microsomes. Starting from 1, we prepared a series of amide-based derivatives and studied their structure-activity relationships against GSK-3β supported by 1 µs molecular dynamics simulations. The biological potency of this series was substantially enhanced by identifying the eutomer configuration at the stereocenter. Moreover, the introduction of an amide bond proved to be an effective strategy to eliminate the metabolic hotspot. The most potent compounds, (R)-3-(3-((7-chloro-9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indol-4-yl)(methyl)amino)piperidin-1-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile ((R)-2) and (R)-1-(3-((7-bromo-9Hpyrimido[4,5-b]indol-4-yl)(methyl)amino)piperidin-1-yl)propan-1-one ((R)-28), exhibited IC₅₀ values of 480 nM and 360 nM, respectively, and displayed improved metabolic stability. Their favorable biological profile is complemented by minimal cytotoxicity and neuroprotective properties.

Evolution from Ferromagnetism to Antiferromagnetism in Yb(Rh_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}Si_{2}

Yb(Rh_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}Si_{2} is a model system to address two challenging problems in the field of strongly correlated electron systems. The first is the intriguing competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order when approaching a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The second is the occurrence of magnetic order along a very hard crystalline electric field (CEF) direction, i.e., along the one with the smallest available magnetic moment. Here, we present a detailed study of the evolution of the magnetic order in this system from a FM state with moments along the very hard c direction at x=0.27 towards the yet unknown magnetic state at x=0. We first observe a transition towards an AFM canted state with decreasing x and then to a pure AFM state. This confirms that the QCP in YbRh_{2}Si_{2} is AFM, but the phase diagram is very similar to those observed in some inherently FM systems like NbFe_{2} and CeRuPO, which suggests that the basic underlying instability might be FM. Despite the huge CEF anisotropy the ordered moment retains a component along the c axis also in the AFM state. The huge CEF anisotropy in Yb(Rh_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}Si_{2} excludes that this hard-axis ordering originates from a competing exchange anisotropy as often proposed for other heavy-fermion systems. Instead, it points to an order-by-disorder based mechanism.

Divalent EuRh2Si2 as a reference for the Luttinger theorem and antiferromagnetism in trivalent heavy-fermion YbRh2Si2

Application of the Luttinger theorem to the Kondo lattice YbRh2Si2 suggests that its large 4f-derived Fermi surface (FS) in the paramagnetic (PM) regime should be similar in shape and volume to that of the divalent local-moment antiferromagnet (AFM) EuRh2Si2 in its PM regime. Here we show by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that paramagnetic EuRh2Si2 has a large FS essentially similar to the one seen in YbRh2Si2 down to 1 K. In EuRh2Si2 the onset of AFM order below 24.5 K induces an extensive fragmentation of the FS due to Brillouin zone folding, intersection and resulting hybridization of the Fermi-surface sheets. Our results on EuRh2Si2 indicate that the formation of the AFM state in YbRh2Si2 is very likely also connected with similar changes in the FS, which have to be taken into account in the controversial analysis and discussion of anomalies observed at the quantum critical point in this system.

Evidence for the Presence of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State in CeCu_{2}Si_{2} Revealed Using ^{63}Cu NMR

Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed on CeCu_{2}Si_{2} in the presence of a magnetic field close to the upper critical field μ_{0}H_{c2} in order to investigate its superconducting (SC) properties near pair-breaking fields. In lower fields, the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/T_{1}T abruptly decreased below the SC transition temperature T_{c}(H), a phenomenon understood within the framework of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity. In contrast, 1/T_{1}T was enhanced just below T_{c}(H) and exhibited a broad maximum when magnetic fields close to μ_{0}H_{c2}(0) were applied parallel or perpendicular to the c axis; although the Knight shift decreased just below T_{c}(H). This enhancement of 1/T_{1}T, which was recently observed in the organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu(NCS)_{2}, suggests the presence of high-density Andreev bound states in the inhomogeneous SC region, a hallmark of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase.

Evolution of the Kondo lattice and non-Fermi liquid excitations in a heavy-fermion metal

Strong electron correlations can give rise to extraordinary properties of metals with renormalized Landau quasiparticles. Near a quantum critical point, these quasiparticles can be destroyed and non-Fermi liquid behavior ensues. YbRh2Si2 is a prototypical correlated metal exhibiting the formation of quasiparticle and Kondo lattice coherence, as well as quasiparticle destruction at a field-induced quantum critical point. Here we show how, upon lowering the temperature, Kondo lattice coherence develops at zero field and finally gives way to non-Fermi liquid electronic excitations. By measuring the single-particle excitations through scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we find the Kondo lattice peak displays a non-trivial temperature dependence with a strong increase around 3.3 K. At 0.3 K and with applied magnetic field, the width of this peak is minimized in the quantum critical regime. Our results demonstrate that the lattice Kondo correlations have to be sufficiently developed before quantum criticality can set in.

Full-Gap Superconductivity Robust against Disorder in Heavy-Fermion CeCu_{2}Si_{2}

A key aspect of unconventional pairing by the antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuation mechanism is that the superconducting energy gap must have the opposite sign on different parts of the Fermi surface. Recent observations of non-nodal gap structure in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu_{2}Si_{2} were then very surprising, given that this material has long been considered a prototypical example of a superconductor where the Cooper pairing is magnetically mediated. Here we present a study of the effect of controlled point defects, introduced by electron irradiation, on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth λ(T) in CeCu_{2}Si_{2}. We find that the fully gapped state is robust against disorder, demonstrating that low-energy bound states, expected for sign-changing gap structures, are not induced by nonmagnetic impurities. This provides bulk evidence for s_{++}-wave superconductivity without sign reversal.

Remarkable magnetostructural coupling around the magnetic transition in CeCo0.85Fe0.15Si

We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of CeCo0.85Fe0.15Si under high magnetic fields (up to 16 Tesla) measuring different physical properties such as specific heat, magnetization, electrical resistivity, thermal expansion and magnetostriction. CeCo0.85Fe0.15Si becomes antiferromagnetic at [Formula: see text] K. However, a broad tail (onset at [Formula: see text] K) in the specific heat precedes that second order transition. This tail is also observed in the temperature derivative of the resistivity. However, it is particularly noticeable in the thermal expansion coefficient where it takes the form of a large bump centered at T X . A high magnetic field practically washes out that tail in the resistivity. But surprisingly, the bump in the thermal expansion coefficient becomes a well pronounced peak fully split from the magnetic transition at T N . Concurrently, the magnetoresistance also switches from negative to positive above T N . The magnetostriction is considerable and irreversible at low temperature ([Formula: see text] at 2 K) when the magnetic interactions dominate. A broad jump in the field dependence of the magnetostriction observed at low T may be the signature of a weak ongoing metamagnetic transition. Taking altogether the results indicate the importance of the lattice effects on the development of the magnetic order in these alloys.

Valence fluctuation and magnetic ordering in EuNi2(P(1-x)Ge(x))2 single crystals

Unusual phases and phase transitions are seen at the magnetic-nonmagnetic boundary in Ce-, Eu- and Yb-based compounds. EuNi2P2 is a very unusual valence fluctuating Eu system, because at low temperatures the Eu valence stays close to 2.5 instead of approaching an integer value. The Eu valence, and thus the magnetic property in this system, can be tuned by Ge substitution in the P site as EuNi2Ge2 is known to exhibit the antiferromagnetc (AFM) ordering of divalent Eu moments with T(N)=30K. We have grown EuNi2(P(1-x)Ge(x))2 (0.0≤ x ≤0.5)) single crystals and studied their magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties. Increasing Ge doping to x  >  0.4 results in a well-defined AFM ordered state with T(N)=12K for x  =  0.5. Moreover, the reduced value of magnetic entropy for x  =  0.5 at T(N) suggests the presence of valance fluctuation/the Kondo effect in this compound. Interestingly, the specific heat exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient upon Ge doping. Subsequently, electronic structure calculations lead to a non-integral valence in EuNi2P2 but a stable divalent Eu state in EuNi2Ge2, which is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Muon spin relaxation study on itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe₃ and the effect of Ti substitution on magnetism of CeCrGe₃

A Muon spin relaxation (µSR) study has been performed on the Kondo lattice heavy fermion itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3. Recent investigations of bulk properties have revealed a long-range ordering of Cr moments at Tc = 70 K in this compound. Our µSR investigation between 1.2 K and 125 K confirm the bulk magnetic order which is marked by a loss in initial asymmetry below 70 K accompanied with a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. Field dependent µSR spectra show that the internal field at the muon site is higher than 0.25 T apparently due to the ferromagnetic nature of ordering. The effect of Ti substitution on the magnetism in CeCrGe3 is presented. A systematic study has been made on polycrystalline CeCr(1-x)Ti(x)Ge3 (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 1) using magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), specific heat C(T) and electrical resistivity ρ(T) measurements which clearly reveal that the substitution of Ti for Cr in CeCrGe3 strongly influences the exchange interaction and ferromagnetic ordering of Cr moments. The Cr moment ordering temperature is suppressed gradually with increasing Ti concentration up to x = 0.50 showing Tc = 7 K beyond which Ce moment ordering starts to dominate and a crossover between Cr and Ce moment ordering is observed with a Ce moment ordering Tc = 14 K for x = 1.0. The Kondo lattice behavior is evident from temperature dependence of ρ(T) in all CeCr(1-x)Ti(x)Ge3 samples.

Unusual weak magnetic exchange in two different structure types: YbPt2Sn and YbPt2In

We present the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties of the two new compounds YbPt(2)Sn and YbPt(2)In. X-ray powder diffraction shows that they crystallize in different structure types, the hexagonal ZrPt(2)Al and the cubic Heusler type, respectively. Despite quite different lattice types, both compounds present very similar magnetic properties: a stable trivalent Yb(3+), no evidence for a sizeable Kondo interaction and very weak exchange interactions with a strength below 1 K as deduced from specific heat C(T). Broad anomalies in C(T) suggest short range magnetic ordering at about 250 mK and 180 mK for YbPt(2)Sn and YbPt(2)In, respectively. The weak exchange and the low ordering temperature result in a large magnetocaloric effect as deduced from the magnetic field dependence of C(T), making these compounds interesting candidates for magnetic cooling. In addition we found in YbPt(2)In evidences for a charge density wave transition at about 290 K. The occurrence of such transitions within several RET2X compound series (RE = rare earth, T = noble metal, X = In, Sn) is analyzed.

Heavy fermion and Kondo lattice behavior in the itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3

Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe3 and LaCrGe3 have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity ρ(T), specific heat C(T) and thermoelectric power S(T) measurements. These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group P63/mmc), as previously reported. The ρ(T), χ(T) and C(T) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe3 and CeCrGe3 with TC = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In addition, a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C(T) data of CeCrGe3. The T dependences of ρ and finite values of Sommerfeld coefficient γ obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the T dependence of ρ of CeCrGe3 reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced γ of 130 mJ mol(-1) K(-2) together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from the ρ(T) establish CeCrGe3 as a moderate heavy fermion compound with a quasi-particle mass renormalization factor of ∼45.

Interplay of Dirac fermions and heavy quasiparticles in solids

Many-body interactions in crystalline solids can be conveniently described in terms of quasiparticles with strongly renormalized masses as compared with those of non-interacting particles. Examples of extreme mass renormalization are on the one hand graphene, where the charge carriers obey the linear dispersion relation of massless Dirac fermions, and on the other hand heavy-fermion materials where the effective electron mass approaches the mass of a proton. Here we show that both extremes, Dirac fermions, like they are found in graphene and extremely heavy quasiparticles characteristic for Kondo materials, may not only coexist in a solid but can also undergo strong mutual interactions. Using the example of EuRh₂Si₂, we explicitly demonstrate that these interactions can take place at the surface and in the bulk. The presence of the linear dispersion is imposed solely by the crystal symmetry, whereas the existence of heavy quasiparticles is caused by the localized nature of the 4f states.

Interplay between Kondo suppression and Lifshitz transitions in YbRh2Si2 at high magnetic fields

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity, and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands.

Doped YbRh2Si2: not only ferromagnetic correlations but ferromagnetic order

YbRh2Si2 is a prototypical system for studying unconventional antiferromagnetic quantum criticality. However, ferromagnetic correlations are present which can be enhanced via isoelectronic cobalt substitution for rhodium in Yb(Rh(1-x)Co(x))2Si2. So far, the magnetic order with increasing x was believed to remain antiferromagnetic. Here, we present the discovery of ferromagnetism for x = 0.27 below T(C) = 1.30  K in single crystalline samples. Unexpectedly, ordering occurs along the c axis, the hard crystalline electric field direction, where the g factor is an order of magnitude smaller than in the basal plane. Although the spontaneous magnetization is only 0.1 μB/Yb it corresponds to the full expected saturation moment along c taking into account partial Kondo screening.

Far-infrared optical conductivity of CeCu2Si2

We investigated the optical reflectivity of the heavy-fermion metal CeCu(2)Si(2) in the energy range 3 meV-30 eV for temperatures between 4 and 300 K. The results for the charge dynamics indicate a behavior that is expected for the formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state: upon cooling the spectra of the optical conductivity indicate a narrowing of the coherent response. Below temperatures of 30 K a considerable suppression of conductivity evolves below a peak structure at 13 meV. We assign this gap-like feature to strong electron correlations due to the 4f-conduction electron hybridization.

Optical study of archetypical valence-fluctuating Eu systems

We have investigated the optical conductivity of the prominent valence-fluctuating compounds EuIr(2)Si(2) and EuNi(2)P(2) in the infrared energy range to get new insights into the electronic properties of valence-fluctuating systems. For both compounds, we observe upon cooling the formation of a renormalized Drude response, a partial suppression of the optical conductivity below 100 meV, and the appearance of a midinfrared peak at 0.15 eV for EuIr(2)Si(2) and 0.13 eV for EuNi(2)P(2). Most remarkably, our results show a strong similarity with the optical spectra reported for many Ce- or Yb-based heavy-fermion metals and intermediate valence systems, although the phase diagrams and the temperature dependence of the valence differ strongly between Eu systems and Ce- or Yb-based systems. This suggests that the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons, which is responsible for the properties of Ce and Yb systems, plays an important role in valence-fluctuating Eu systems.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point: unusual short-range ordered state in CeFePO

Cerium 4f electronic spin dynamics in single crystals of the heavy-fermion system CeFePO is studied by means of ac susceptibility, specific heat, and muon-spin relaxation (μSR). Short-range static magnetism occurs below the freezing temperature T(g) ≈ 0.7 K, which prevents the system from accessing a putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point. In the μSR, the sample-averaged muon asymmetry function is dominated by strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations below 10 K and exhibits a characteristic time-field scaling relation expected from glassy spin dynamics, strongly evidencing cooperative and critical spin fluctuations. The overall behavior can be ascribed neither to canonical spin glasses nor other disorder-driven mechanisms.

Magnetic behavior of Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4): antiferromagnetic order and large magnetoresistance

The results of the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements on polycrystalline Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4) are presented. Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4) forms in Na(3)Pt(4)Ge(4)-type cubic crystal structure (space group [Formula: see text]). The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4) confirms the divalent state (Eu(2+)) of Eu ions with an effective magnetic moment μ(eff) = 7.98 μ(B). At low fields, e.g. at 0.01 T, a magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered state occurs at T(N) = 10.9 K, which is further confirmed by the temperature dependence of the heat capacity and electrical resistivity. The field dependence of isothermal magnetization at 2 K reveals the presence of two field induced metamagnetic transitions at H(c1) and H(c2) = 0.55 and 1.2 T, respectively and a polarized phase above H(PO) = 1.7 T. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at the transition temperature, ΔC|(T(N)) = 13.48 J/mol-Eu K would indicate an amplitude modulated (AM) antiferromagnetic structure. An interesting feature is that a large negative magnetoresistance, MR = [ρ(H) - ρ(0)]/ρ(0), is observed in the vicinity of magnetic transition even up to 2T(N). Similar large magnetoresistance has been observed in the paramagnetic state in some Gd and Eu based alloys and has been attributed to the magneto-polaronic effect.

Determining the in-plane orientation of the ground-state orbital of CeCu2Si2

We have successfully determined the hitherto unknown sign of the B(4)(4) Stevens crystal-field parameter of the tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeCu(2)Si(2) using vector q-dependent nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments at the cerium N(4,5) edge. The observed difference between the two different directions, q∥[100] and q∥[110], is due to the anisotropy of the crystal-field ground state in the (001) plane and is observable only because of the utilization of higher than dipole transitions possible in nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering. This approach allows us to go beyond the specific limitations of dc magnetic susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering, and soft x-ray spectroscopy, and provides us with a reliable information about the orbital state of the 4f electrons relevant for the quantitative modeling of the quasiparticles and their interactions in heavy-fermion systems.

Structural investigations on YbRh2Si2: from the atomic to the macroscopic length scale

YbRh2Si2 has advanced to a prototype material for investigating physics related to the Kondo effect. An optimization of the synthesis resulted in single crystals of extraordinary crystalline quality. At the atomic scale, we utilize scanning tunneling microscopy to study the topography of cleaved single crystals. A structural and chemical analysis was conducted by highly accurate x-ray diffraction and wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopy measurements. The latter indicate a homogeneity range of the YbRh2Si2 phase between approximately 40.0–40.2 at.% Rh. For our high-quality samples the number of defects found on the atomic scale (of the order of 0.3% of the visible lattice sites) is in quantitative agreement with a very small off-stoichiometry within this homogeneity range. Comparing our results for these samples allows an assignment of the structural defects observed at the cleaved surfaces to Rh occupying Si sites and, even less numerous Si in Rh sites. Such an analysis is hampered for samples of lesser quality, but there seem to be numerous empty Si-sites. Based on these observations the results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy can be analyzed in further detail and provide insight into the Kondo physics.

Magnetism, f-electron localization and superconductivity in 122-type heavy-fermion metals

Both CeCu2Si2 and YbRh2Si2 crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 crystal structure. Recent neutron-scattering results on normal-state CeCu2Si2 reveal a slowing down of the quasielastic response which complies with the scaling expected for a quantum critical point (QCP) of itinerant, i.e., three-dimensional spin-density-wave (SDW), type. This interpretation is in full agreement with the non-Fermi-liquid behavior observed in transport and thermodynamic measurements. The momentum dependence of the magnetic excitation spectrum reveals two branches of an overdamped dispersive mode whose coupling to the heavy charge carriers is strongly retarded. These overdamped spin fluctuations are considered to be the driving force for superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 (Tc = 600 mK). The weak antiferromagnet YbRh2Si2 (TN = 70 mK) exhibits a magnetic-field-induced QCP at BN = 0.06 T (B⊥c). There is no indication of superconductivity down to T = 10 mK. The magnetic QCP appears to concur with a breakdown of the Kondo effect. Doping-induced variations of the average unit-cell volume result in a detachment of the magnetic and electronic instabilities. A comparison of the properties of these isostructural compounds suggests that 3D SDW QCPs are favorable for unconventional superconductivity. The question whether a Kondo-breakdown QCP may also give rise to superconductivity, however, remains to be clarified.

Interplay between Fe 3d and Ce 4f magnetism and Kondo interaction in CeFeAs(1-x)P(x)O probed by 75As and 31P NMR

A detailed (31)P (I = 1/2) and (75)As (I = 3/2) NMR study on polycrystalline CeFeAs(1-x)P(x)O alloys is presented. The magnetism of CeFeAsO changes drastically upon P substitution on the As site. CeFePO is a heavy fermion system without long-range order whereas CeFeAsO exhibits an Fe 3d SDW type of ordering accompanied by a structural transition from tetragonal (TT) to orthorhombic (OT) structure. Furthermore, Ce 4f(1) orders antiferromagnetically (AFM) at low temperature. At the critical concentration where the Fe magnetism is diminished the Ce-Ce interaction changes to a ferromagnetic (FM) type of ordering. Three representative samples of the CeFeAs(1-x)P(x)O (x = 0.05, 0.3 and 0.9) series are systematically investigated. (1) For the x = 0.05 alloy a drastic change of the linewidth at 130 K indicates the AFM-SDW type of ordering of Fe and the structural change from the TT to the OT phase. The linewidth roughly measures the internal field in the ordered state and the transition is most likely first order. The small and nearly constant shift from (31)P and (75)As NMR suggests the presence of competing hyperfine interactions between the nuclear spins and the 4f and 3d ions of Ce and Fe. (2) For the x = 0.3 alloy, the evolution of the Fe-SDW type of order takes place at around 70 K corroborating the results of bulk measurement and μSR. Here we found evidence for phase separation of paramagnetic and magnetic SDW phases. (3) In contrast to the heavy fermion CeFePO for the x = 0.9 alloy a phase transition is found at 2 K. The field-dependent NMR shift gives evidence of FM ordering. Above the ordering the spin-lattice relaxation rate (31)(1/T(1)) shows unconventional, non-Korringa-like behaviour which indicates a complex interplay of Kondo and FM fluctuations.

Insight into the f-derived Fermi surface of the heavy-fermion compound YbRh2Si2

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) was used to study the Fermi surface of the heavy-fermion system YbRh(2)Si(2) at a temperature of about 10 K, i.e., a factor of 2 below the Kondo energy scale. We observed sharp structures with a well-defined topology, which were analyzed by comparing with results of band-structure calculations based on the local-density approximation (LDA). The observed bulk Fermi surface presents strong similarities with that expected for a trivalent Yb state, but is slightly larger, has a strong Yb-4f character, and deviates from the LDA results by a larger region without states around the Γ point. These properties are qualitatively explained in the framework of a simple f-d hybridization model. Our analysis highlights the importance of taking into account surface states and doing an appropriate projection along k(z) when comparing ARPES data with results from theoretical calculations.

Signatures of spin-glass behaviour in PrIr2B2 and heavy fermion behaviour in PrIr2B2C

The magnetic and transport properties of PrIr(2)B(2) and PrIr(2)B(2)C have been investigated by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements. PrIr(2)B(2) forms in CaRh(2)B(2)-type orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Fddd). At low fields the dc magnetic susceptibility of PrIr(2)B(2) exhibits a sharp anomaly near 46 K which is followed by an abrupt increase below 10 K with a peak at 6 K, and split-up in ZFC and FC data below 46 K. In contrast, the specific heat exhibits only a broad Schottky type hump near 9 K which indicates that there is no long range magnetic order in this compound. The thermo-remanent magnetization is found to decay very slowly with a mean relaxation time τ = 3917 s. An ac magnetic susceptibility measurement also observes two sharp anomalies; the peak positions strongly depend on the frequency and shift towards high temperature with an increase in frequency, obeying the Vogel-Fulcher law as expected for a canonical spin-glass system. The two spin-glass transitions occur at freezing temperatures T(f1) = 36 K and T(f2) = 3.5 K with shifts in the freezing temperatures per decade of frequency δT(f1) = 0.044 and δT(f2) = 0.09. An analysis of the frequency dependence of the transition temperature with critical slowing down, τ(max)/τ(0) = [(T(f)-T(SG))/T(SG)](-zν), gives τ(0) = 10(-7) s and exponent zν = 8, and the Vogel-Fulcher law gives an activation energy of 84 K for T(f1) and 27.5 K for T(f2). While zν = 8 is typical for spin-glass system, the characteristic relaxation time τ(0) = 10(-7) s is very large and comparable to that of superspin-glass systems. An addition of C in PrIr(2)B(2) leads to PrIr(2)B(2)C which forms in LuNi(2)B(2)C-type tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm) and remains paramagnetic down to 2 K. The specific heat data show a broad Schottky type anomaly, which could be fairly reproduced with CEF analysis which suggests that the ground state is a CEF-split singlet and the first excited state singlet is situated 15 K above the ground state. The Sommerfeld coefficient γ∼300 mJ mol(-1) K(-2) of PrIr(2)B(2)C is very high and reflects a heavy fermion behaviour in this compound. We believe that the heavy fermion state in PrIr(2)B(2)C has its origin in low lying crystal field excitations as has been observed in PrRh(2)B(2)C.

Pressure tuning of the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity in CeCu2Si2

We carried out specific-heat and ac-susceptibility experiments under hydrostatic pressure to investigate the interplay of spin-density-wave antiferromagnetism (A) and superconductivity (S) in single-crystalline AS-type CeCu(2)Si(2). We find evidence for a line of magnetic-field- and pressure-tuned quantum critical points in the normal state in the zero-temperature magnetic field-pressure plane. Our analysis suggests an extension of this line into the superconducting state and corroborates the close connection of the underlying mechanisms leading to the formation of the antiferromagnetic and the superconducting states in AS-type CeCu(2)Si(2).

Determination of gap symmetry from angle-dependent H(c2) measurements on CeCu₂Si₂

The tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeCu₂Si₂ exhibits a superconducting ground state (S type, T(c) = 0.67 K) close to a magnetic instability. Here, we present angle-resolved resistivity measurements of the upper critical field H(c2). In-plane rotation of S-type CeCu₂Si₂ single crystals reveals a fourfold oscillation of H(c2). An extended weak-coupling BCS model for a d-wave symmetry including strong Pauli-limiting effects confirms the aforementioned angular dependence and points towards d(xy) symmetry of the order parameter.

k Dependence of the crystal-field splittings of 4f states in rare-earth systems

The occupation, energy separation, and order of the crystal-field-split 4f states are crucial for the understanding of the magnetic properties of rare-earth systems. We provide the experimental evidence that crystal-field-split 4f states exhibit energy dispersion in momentum space leading to variations of energy spacings between them and even of their energy sequence across the Brillouin zone. These observations were made by performing angle-resolved photoemission experiments on YbRh(2)Si(2) and properly simulated within a simple model based on results obtained by inelastic neutron scattering experiments and band structure calculations. Our findings should be generally applicable to rare-earth systems and have considerable impact on the understanding of magnetism and related phenomena.

Electron spin resonance of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeRuPO

The spin dynamics of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeRuPO is investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) at microwave frequencies of 1, 9.4 and 34 GHz. The measured resonance can be ascribed to a rarely observed bulk Ce(3 + ) resonance in a metallic Ce compound and can be followed below the ferromagnetic transition temperature T(C) = 14 K. At T > T(C) the interplay between the RKKY exchange interaction and the crystal electric field anisotropy determines the ESR parameters. Near T(C) the spin-relaxation rate is influenced by the critical fluctuations of the order parameter.

Evidence for a non-Fermi-liquid phase in Ge-substituted YbRh2Si2

The canonical view of heavy fermion quantum criticality assumes a single quantum critical point separating the paramagnet from the antiferromagnet. However, recent experiments on Yb-based heavy fermion compounds suggest the presence of non-Fermi liquid behavior over a finite zero-temperature region. Using detailed susceptibility and transport measurements we show that the classic quantum critical system, Ge-substituted YbRh(2)Si(2), also displays such behavior. We advance arguments that this is not due to a disorder-smeared quantum critical point, but represents a new class of metallic phase.

Superconductivity versus quantum criticality: what can we learn from heavy fermions?

Two quantum critical point (QCP) scenarios are being discussed for different classes of antiferromagnetic (AF) heavy-fermion (HF) systems. In the itinerant one, where AF order is of the spin-density wave (SDW) type, the heavy 'composite' charge carriers keep their integrity at the QCP. The second one implies a breakdown of the Kondo effect and a disintegration of the composite fermions at the AF QCP. We discuss two isostructural compounds as exemplary materials for these two different scenarios: CeCu(2)Si(2) exhibits a three-dimensional (3D) SDW QCP and superconductivity, presumably mediated by SDW fluctuations, as strongly suggested by recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments. In Y bRh(2)Si(2), the AF QCP is found to coincide with a Kondo-destroying one. However, in the latter compound these two QCPs can be detached by varying the average unit-cell volume, e.g. through the application of chemical pressure, as realized by partial substitution of either Ir or Co for Rh. A comparison of CeCu(2)Si(2) and Y bRh(2)Si(2) indicates that the apparent differences in quantum critical behaviour go along with disparate behaviour concerning the (non-) existence of superconductivity (SC). No sign of SC could be detected in Y bRh(2)Si(2) down to mK temperatures. A potential correlation between the specific nature of the QCP and the occurrence of SC, however, requires detailed studies on further quantum critical HF superconductors, e.g. on β-Y bAlB(4), UBe(13), CeCoIn(5) and CeRhIn(5).

Anisotropic electron spin resonance of Y bIr₂Si₂

A series of electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments were performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion metal Y bIr₂Si₂ to map out the anisotropy of the ESR-intensity I(ESR) which is governed by the microwave field component of the g-factor. The temperature dependencies of I(ESR)(T) and g(T) were measured for different orientations and compared within the range 2.6 K ≤ T ≤ 16 K. The analysis of the intensity dependence on the crystal orientation with respect to both the direction of the microwave field and the static magnetic field revealed remarkable features: the intensity variation with respect to the direction of the microwave field was found to be one order of magnitude smaller than expected from the g-factor anisotropy. Furthermore, we observed a weak basal plane anisotropy of the ESR parameters which we interpret to be an intrinsic sample property.
