Abstract
Different efforts have been made to find better and less invasive methods for the diagnosis and prediction of oral cancer, such as the study of saliva as a source of biomarkers. The aim of this study was to perform a scoping review about salivary molecules that have been assessed as possible biomarkers for the diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A search was conducted using EBSCO, PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Web of Science. The research question was as follows: which molecules present in saliva have utility to be used as biomarkers for the early detection of oral cancer? Sixty-two studies were included. Over 100 molecules were assessed. Most of the markers were oriented towards the early diagnosis of OSCC and were classified based on their ability for detecting OSCC and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), OSCC outcome prediction, and the prediction of the malignant transformation of OPMDs. TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 IL-8, LDH, and MMP-9 were the most studied, with almost all studies reporting high sensitivity and specificity values. TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 IL-8, LDH, and MMP-9 are the most promising salivary biomarkers. However, more studies with larger cohorts are needed before translating the use of these biomarkers to clinical settings.

Abstract
We examined the associations of middle childhood and adolescence nighttime sleep duration with adolescence internalizing and externalizing behavior problems per the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) questionnaires, in a cohort of 889 Colombian schoolchildren. We estimated adjusted differences with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in mean behavior problem t-scores in standardized units between recommended sleep duration categories and as a continuous exposure using multiple linear regression and restricted cubic spline models, respectively. Compared with sleep duration within recommendations, middle childhood sleep above recommendations was related to 4.6 (95% CI: 1.6, 7.6; p = .004) and 5.4 (95% CI: 1.2, 9.7; p = .01) adjusted units higher YSR and CBCL externalizing problem scores, respectively. In continuous exposure analyses, this association seemed restricted to children aged ≥11 years. Longer sleep, both in categories and as a continuous exposure, was also associated with increased CBCL internalizing problems. Results did not differ by sex or weekend/weekday sleep. Sleeping under recommendations in middle childhood was not significantly related to behavior problems; nevertheless, shorter sleep in adolescence, in both categorical and continuous scales, was significantly related to behavior problems. In conclusion, behavior problems in adolescence are associated with longer sleep in middle childhood and shorter sleep in adolescence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Puberty affects sleep phasing. However, it is unclear if sleep duration earlier in childhood could influence the timing of pubertal events. We aimed to assess the association between middle childhood nighttime sleep duration and age at menarche (AAM). METHODS In a cohort of 819 premenarcheal Colombian girls who were followed annually for the occurrence of menarche, we estimated adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for menarche by categories of recommended sleep duration in middle childhood using Cox models. Analyses were stratified by age at sleep assessment. RESULTS Among girls aged 9 to <11 years, compared with girls who slept within recommendations, sleeping above recommendations was related to an adjusted 76% (95% CI: 4%, 198%; p = .04) higher probability of experiencing menarche during follow up. In girls aged ≥11 years, compared with girls who slept within recommendations, sleeping under recommendations was related to an adjusted 42% (95% CI: 5%, 93%; p = .03) higher probability of experiencing menarche during follow-up. Sleep duration was not associated with AAM in girls aged <9 years at the time of sleep assessment. CONCLUSIONS Sleeping above recommendations in girls 9 to <11 years-old and sleeping under recommendations in girls ≥11 years-old is associated with earlier menarche.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Telomere length (TL) attrition is related to chronic disease risk. However, less is known on whether TL predicts infectious outcomes, especially in childhood. We examined whether leukocyte TL (LTL) was associated with subsequent infectious morbidity in schoolchildren. METHODS We assessed LTL in 717 Colombian children 5-12 years-old at the beginning of a school year and followed them through the year for daily occurrence of common infection symptoms and doctor visits. We estimated adjusted incidence rate ratios (IRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) of gastrointestinal and respiratory syndromes for quartiles of standardized LTL Z score and per unit LTL Z score. RESULTS A longer LTL was associated with increased incidence of all infectious morbidity syndromes considered. Adjusted IRR (95% CI) per unit LTL Z score were 1.55 (1.20, 2.00) for diarrhea with vomiting, 1.34 (1.13, 1.60) for cough with fever, 1.70 (1.28, 2.28) for ear infection, and 1.66 (1.36, 2.02) for doctor visits with symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Longer LTL is related to increased incidence of common infectious morbidities in middle childhood.

Abstract
A low second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) is a purported biomarker of increased intrauterine androgenic exposure, presumably linked to postnatal behavior. We aimed to examine the associations between 2D:4D and adolescence behavior problems expected from high (externalizing and attention problems) or low (internalizing problems) prenatal androgen exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1042 Colombian schoolchildren aged 11-18 y. We examined whether caliper-assessed 2D:4D was associated with behavior problems per the Youth Self-Report questionnaire. Mean problem standardized score point differences were estimated between hand- and sex-specific quintiles of 2D:4D with use of multivariable linear regression. Lower right-hand 2D:4D was associated with decreased externalizing and internalizing behavior problem scores. Corresponding lowest-to-median quintile adjusted mean differences (95% CI) were -4.6 (-7.5, -1.7) and -3.5 (-6.4, -0.6) points in boys; and -3.4 (-5.9, -0.9) and -3.5 (-6.2, -0.8) points in girls. Lower right-hand 2D:4D was also related to less attention and thought problems in boys, and to less social problems among girls. Associations were nonlinear, apparent only below 2D:4D medians, and stronger with the right than the left hand. In conclusion, right-hand 2D:4D is related to behavior problems in adolescence in directions that are not fully consistent with an androgenic exposure origin.

Abstract
The range of vaccines developed against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2) provides a unique opportunity to study immunization across different platforms. In a single-center cohort, we analyzed the humoral and cellular immune compartments following five coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines spanning three technologies (adenoviral, mRNA and inactivated virus) administered in 16 combinations. For adenoviral and inactivated-virus vaccines, heterologous combinations were generally more immunogenic compared to homologous regimens. The mRNA vaccine as the second dose resulted in the strongest antibody response and induced the highest frequency of spike-binding memory B cells irrespective of the priming vaccine. Priming with the inactivated-virus vaccine increased the SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell response, whereas boosting did not. Distinct immune signatures were elicited by the different vaccine combinations, demonstrating that the immune response is shaped by the type of vaccines applied and the order in which they are delivered. These data provide a framework for improving future vaccine strategies against pathogens and cancer.

Abstract
We examined the associations of chronotype with behavior problems in a cross-sectional study of 957 Colombian adolescents (mean age, 14.6 years; 56% female), in addition to the mediating role of social jetlag. The midpoint of bedtime and waketime on free days, corrected for sleep debt accumulated during school week (MSFsc), was estimated from parent reports and used to assess chronotype. Behavior problems were evaluated through the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and the parent-completed Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) questionnaires. We estimated adjusted mean differences with 95% CI in externalizing, internalizing, attention, social, and thought problem scores per one hour difference in chronotype using linear regression. Later chronotype was related to internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Eveningness was associated with higher adjusted mean YSR scores (unit difference per hour) in externalizing behavior (1.0; 95% CI: 0.6, 1.5), internalizing behavior (0.6; 95% CI: 0.2, 1.1), attention problems (0.2; 95% CI: 0.0, 0.3), social problems (0.4; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.8), and thought problems (0.3; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.6). Similar patterns were observed with the CBCL. The associations of chronotype with somatic complaints and social problems were stronger in boys than they were in girls. Later chronotype was related to social jetlag but social jetlag was only associated with somatic complaints and attention problems, and mediated 16% and 26% of their corresponding associations with chronotype. In conclusion, later chronotype is associated with behavior problems in adolescence. Social jetlag does not substantially mediate these associations.

Abstract
Short telomere length is associated with chronic diseases and decreased lifespan. Vitamin D and its binding protein (DBP) may maintain telomeres through anti-inflammatory actions, yet the role of vitamin D on telomere length is uncertain, especially in children. We assessed the cross-sectional associations of plasma 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) and DBP with leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in a group of 447 children ages 5-12 years from the Bogotá School Children Cohort. We compared the distribution of age-standardized LTL (z-score) between 25(OH)D categories and between DBP quartiles overall and by sex. Overall, 25(OH)D was not significantly associated with LTL. Nonetheless, among boys, 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L was related to an adjusted 0.36 shorter LTL z-score (95% CI: -0.71, -0.01; P = 0.046) compared with 25(OH)D ≥ 75 nmol/L. There was no association among girls. DBP was not significantly related to LTL. Intervention studies are warranted to determine whether increasing vitamin D status enhances telomere length.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 severity has been linked to an increased production of inflammatory mediators called "cytokine storm". Available data is mainly restricted to the first international outbreak and reports highly variable results. This study compares demographic and clinical features of patients with COVID-19 from Córdoba, Argentina, during the first two waves of the pandemic and analyzes association between comorbidities and disease outcome with the "cytokine storm", offering added value to the field. Methods We investigated serum concentration of thirteen soluble mediators, including cytokines and chemokines, in hospitalized patients with moderate and severe COVID-19, without previous rheumatic and autoimmune diseases, from the central region of Argentina during the first and second infection waves. Samples from healthy controls were also assayed. Clinical and biochemical parameters were collected. Results Comparison between the two first COVID-19 waves in Argentina highlighted that patients recruited during the second wave were younger and showed less concurrent comorbidities than those from the first outbreak. We also recognized particularities in the signatures of systemic cytokines and chemokines in patients from both infection waves. We determined that concurrent pre-existing comorbidities did not have contribution to serum concentration of systemic cytokines and chemokines in COVID-19 patients. We also identified immunological and biochemical parameters associated to inflammation which can be used as prognostic markers. Thus, IL-6 concentration, C reactive protein level and platelet count allowed to discriminate between death and discharge in patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19 only during the first but not the second wave. Conclusions Our data provide information that deepens our understanding of COVID-19 pathogenesis linking demographic features of a COVID-19 cohort with cytokines and chemokines systemic concentration, presence of comorbidities and different disease outcomes. Altogether, our findings provide information not only at local level by delineating inflammatory/anti-inflammatory response of patients but also at international level addressing the impact of comorbidities and the infection wave in the variability of cytokine and chemokine production upon SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) food fortification in low- and middle-income countries near the Equator is unknown. OBJECTIVES We examined the effects of providing cholecalciferol-fortified skim milk to adolescents and their mothers on serum total 25(OH)D, free 25(OH)D, and vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) concentrations in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS We randomly assigned 80 Colombian families each with a child aged 12-14.5 y and their mother 1 L of skim milk daily, either fortified with 2400 IU (60 μg) cholecalciferol or unfortified, for 6 wk. We prescribed 500 mL of milk daily to adolescents; mothers consumed the remainder ad libitum. We estimated intent-to-treat effects as the between-arm difference in the change in serum total and free 25(OH)D and DBP concentrations from baseline to the end of follow-up. Secondary analyses included stratification by baseline characteristics and per-protocol comparisons. RESULTS Among adolescents, fortification effects (95% CI) on serum total 25(OH)D, free 25(OH)D, and DBP concentrations were 5.4 nmol/L (2.1, 8.8 nmol/L), 0.6 pmol/L (-0.2, 1.4 pmol/L), and -416 nmol/L (-944, 112 nmol/L), respectively. Effects on total 25(OH)D were stronger in adolescents with lower DBP concentrations, darker skin, less sunlight exposure, and higher compliance than in their respective counterparts. Fortification increased free 25(OH)D concentrations in high compliers. Among mothers, the effects (95% CI) on total 25(OH)D and DBP concentrations were 4.0 nmol/L (0.6, 7.5 nmol/L) and -128 nmol/L (-637, 381 nmol/L), respectively. There were no adverse events. CONCLUSIONS Provision of cholecalciferol-fortified skim milk increases serum total 25(OH)D concentrations in Colombian adolescents and adult women.

Abstract
Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with obesity and may be involved in its aetiology, but few studies have focused on children and most have been cross-sectional. We assessed the relation of LTL with adiposity development in a prospective study of Colombian children. We quantified LTL at enrollment in 722 children aged 5-12 years and measured anthropometry annually for a median 6 years. Using mixed effects models, we estimated changes in adiposity measures including BMI and waist circumference (WC)-for-age z-scores in relation to baseline LTL z-score. In girls, longer LTL was linearly related to a lower increase in WC z-score from age 6 to 16 years. Every 1 SD LTL was associated with an adjusted 0.13 units lower increase in WC (95% CI: -0.23, -0.03; p = 0.01). In conclusion, longer LTL among girls in middle childhood is associated with smaller increases in WC, an indicator of abdominal adiposity.

Abstract
Purpose: To perform a comprehensive and systematic critical appraisal of the genetic alterations reported to be present in adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) compared to ameloblastoma (AM), to aid in the understanding in their development and different behavior. Methods: An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science during March 2021. Eligibility criteria included publications on humans which included genetic analysis of AOT or AM. Results: A total of 43 articles reporting 59 AOTs and 680 AMs were included. Different genomic techniques were used, including whole-exome sequencing, direct sequencing, targeted next-generation sequencing panels and TaqMan allele-specific qPCR. Somatic mutations affecting KRAS were identified in 75.9% of all AOTs, mainly G12V; whereas a 71% of the AMs harbored BRAF mutations, mainly V600E. Conclusions: The available genetic data reports that AOTs and AM harbor somatic mutations in well-known oncogenes, being KRAS G12V/R and BRAFV600E mutations the most common, respectively. The relatively high frequency of ameloblastoma compared to other odontogenic tumors, such as AOT, has facilitated the performance of different sequencing techniques, allowing the discovery of different mutational signatures. On the contrary, the low frequency of AOTs is an important limitation for this. The number of studies that have a assessed the genetic landscape of AOT is still very limited, not providing enough evidence to draw a conclusion regarding the relationship between the genomic alterations and its clinical behavior. Thus, the presence of other mutational signatures with clinical impact, co-occurring with background KRAS mutations or in wild-type KRAS cases, cannot be ruled out. Since BRAF and RAS are in the same MAPK pathway, it is interesting that ameloblastomas, frequently associated with BRAFV600E mutation have aggressive clinical behavior, but in contrast, AOTs, frequently associated with RAS mutations have indolent behavior. Functional studies might be required to solve this question.

Abstract
Background MiRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level and have been associated with malignant transformation of oral epithelial precursor lesions such as oral leukoplakia. The aim was to perform a scoping review of the contemporary literature about the different roles of miRNAs during the malignant transformation of oral leukoplakia. Material and Methods We conducted a systematic search with the following MeSH terms: ‘oral leukoplakia’, ‘carcinoma in situ’, ‘microRNAs’, ‘mouth neoplasms’ and ‘epithelial–mesenchymal transition’ in PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and SpringerLink. Results Fifteen articles were included for analysis, among which in vivo and in vitro articles were included. A total of 21 different miRNAs were found to be involved in the malignant transformation process of oral leukoplakia. Regarding their possible effects, 6 miRNAs were classified as oncogenic, 5 as tumour suppressors and 10 were related to epithelial–mesenchymal transition, invasion and migration. Conclusions Based on the current review, we concluded that miRNAs-21, 345, 181-b and 31* seem to be potential markers of malignant transformation of oral leukoplakia. However, further clinical prospective studies are needed in order to validate their utility as prognostic biomarkers. Abstract
Introduction: Half of the Colombian households experience some degree of food insecurity. Food insecurity has been associated with malnutrition, which could result in micronutrient deficiencies in children; however, the evidence is not conclusive. Objective: To examine the associations between food insecurity and blood concentrations of hemoglobin, ferritin, vitamin A, vitamin B12, folate, and zinc in school-age children from Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 2,660 children aged 5-12 from Bogotá’s public schools. We assessed their household food insecurity level with the Spanish version of the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM), a validated scale, and quantified blood biomarkers of iron, vitamin A, folate, vitamin B12, and zinc status. We examined the associations between food insecurity, severe hunger, and micronutrient status biomarkers using propensity scores. Results: Three-quarters of households had some degree of food insecurity and 12 % had food insecurity and severe hunger. Prevalence of marginal vitamin B12 status and vitamin A and zinc deficiencies were, respectively, 17%, 14%, and 1.4%. Compared with children from households without severe hunger, those exposed to it had lower adjusted mean concentrations of vitamin A, vitamin B12, and folate, but these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Food insecurity with severe hunger was not associated with micronutrient status biomarkers in Colombian school-age children. The HFSSM may adequately measure hardship in food acquisition due to lack of resources, but it does not yield an index that is associated with micronutrient status biomarkers.

Abstract
Background Xerostomia or dry mouth sensation corresponds to a common clinical problem that can significantly impair the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). Currently, there is a large variety of local agents available for the treatment of xerostomia, but there is a lack robust evidence supporting the use of one treatment over another. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of a 1% malic acid salivary stimulant spray with a 1.33% betaine-based saliva substitute mouthwash in the improvement of xerostomia.
Material and Methods Fifty-one participants with drug induced or idiopathic xerostomia were randomly allocated into three groups, two intervention and one control group (placebo). OHRQoL and severity of xerostomia were assessed with the OHIP-14sp questionnaire and a visual analogue scale (VAS) respectively. Stimulated and non-stimulated salivary flow rates before and after treatments were also measured.
Results All three groups reported a significantly improvement in the dry mouth sensation and non-stimulated salivary flow rates, but only the malic acid spray and the betaine-based mouthwash significantly improved the OHRQoL. There were no significant differences between both intervention groups.
Conclusions This study provides evidence that both tested agents are comparable in improving the dry mouth sensation and OHRQoL of patients with drug induced and idiopathic xerostomia. Key words:Xerostomia, dry mouth, malic acid, betaine, oral-health related quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this work is the evaluation of usefulness of radioactive seed localization (RSL) for the detection of cervical recurrence of thyroid cancer in order to improve the surgical outcome. MATERIAL AND METHOD Ten patients with thyroid cancer and lymph node involvement (4 naive and 6 with cervical recurrence) evidenced by ultrasound, cytology/Tg-FNAB (reoperated group) were selected for this procedure. A 125I seed was placed in the metastatic lesion using a needle guided by ultrasound. During surgery, a handheld gamma probe/portable gammacamera were used for lesion localization and excision. After removing the target tissue, it was verified that the seed was included in the excised tissue. Surgical intervention duration, lesion location, seed activity, thyroglobulin level, effective radiation dose, complications and the degree of surgical resection were analyzed. RESULTS All the marked nodes were positive in histology. The mean duration of the ultrasound procedure was 11.4±3.4minutes. Seed was kept inside the patient, in average, during 4days (1-7) and the average surgical time was 44.7±29.1minutes. We found 21 metastatic specimens with an average diameter 13.9±6.3mm. The mean activity of the implanted seed was 71.27±21.6MBq (42.8-105) In the reoperated group, thyroglobulin level was 2.08±1.56ng/dl and decreased after surgery to 0.13±0.12ng/dl, P<.01. Only one case of transient hypoparathyroidism was found in the total group. CONCLUSIONS The introduction of RSL in our unit has shown benefits for the patient and medical team, being a safe and effective procedure that also improves surgical programming.

Abstract
La comprensión anatómica y locomotora de los aires naturales del camello es un elemento esencial para su evaluación cinética y cinemática en tanto que constituyen herramientas de marcada predictibilidad del rendimiento funcional, gasto energético y respuesta al entrenamiento. El estudio biomecánico, en asociación con evaluaciones termográficas complementarias, permite la delimitación precisa de los factores de riesgo potencialmente asociados a lesiones músculo-esqueléticas derivadas del trabajo físico desarrollado por estos animales y en consideración de patologías de etiología multifactorial en la mayor parte de los casos. Competiciones de velocidad, exhibiciones lúdicas o paseos turísticos son algunas de las actividades motoras desempeñadas por camellos y que, en regiones geográficas concretas, se encuentran perfiladas por un marcado arraigo cultural. En el caso particular del camello canario (Camelus dromedarius), su uso actual está marginalmente relegado al sector turístico. En condición de raza autóctona amenazada, el ajuste sistematizado de registros de rendimiento locomotor enriquecerá la viabilidad y sostenibilidad de las acciones de conservación, cría selectiva y revalorización funcional de esta raza camellar.

Abstract
La conservación, mejora y uso racional de los recursos genéticos animales locales y su diversidad son propósitos prioritarios a nivel nacional e internacional de evidente carácter legítimo. Reconocida en situación de amenaza, la raza camellar canaria (Camelus dromedarius) se encuentra marginalmente reducida a las islas orientales del archipiélago. Su uso queda restringido fundamentalmente a la explotación turística y, de forma esporádica, a labores variadas en el ámbito agropecuario. La caracterización morfoestructural y zoométrica del camello canario es una tarea clave que permitirá la identificación de aquellos caracteres o rasgos fenotípicos implicados en la actividad productivo-económica de estos animales con el fin de recuperar posibles nuevos nichos funcionales. La presente propuesta metodológica se enmarca en un contexto de oportunidad y resurgimiento de una potencial industria de producción con el asentamiento de las bases para un programa de recuperación y cría selectiva de esta raza camellar a través de su sustentabilidad funcional.

Abstract
El interés creciente en la aplicación de las ciencias del comportamiento a la producción animal ha posibilitado el desarrollo progresivo de técnicas para el mejoramiento y ajuste de los sistemas de manejo con vistas a obtener rendimientos productivos elevados en el marco de la sostenibilidad. La reproducción selectiva y diferencial para rasgos conductuales específicos y deseables en la raza camellar canaria (Camelus dromedarius), previa caracterización etofuncional, puede aplicarse a lograr un incremento del valor adaptativo de los animales a las presiones de los sistemas de producción pecuaria en que se encuentran. Esta iniciativa se enmarca en un plan estratégico de conservación, mejora y fomento de una raza autóctona amenazada a través de vías alternativas de rentabilidad y utilización sostenibles de la raza y sus productos. La cualificación del equipo humano implicado, así como la optimización técnica y mecánica de las infraestructuras en los sistemas de producción camellar, se convierten en objetivos de consideración prioritaria en etología aplicada.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is associated with depression and schizophrenia in adults. The effect of VDD in childhood on behavioral development is unknown. OBJECTIVES We aimed to study the associations of VDD and vitamin D binding protein (DBP) in middle childhood with behavior problems in adolescence. METHODS We quantified plasma total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and DBP in 273 schoolchildren aged 5-12 y at recruitment into a cohort study in Bogota, Colombia. Externalizing and internalizing behavior problems were assessed after a median 6-y follow-up by parental report [Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL)] and self-report [Youth Self-Report (YSR)]. We estimated mean problem score differences with 95% CIs between exposure categories using multivariable linear regression. We also compared the prevalence of clinical behavior problems (score >63) between exposure groups. We assessed whether the associations between DBP and behavior problems were mediated through VDD. RESULTS Mean ± SD CBCL and YSR externalizing problems scores were 56.5 ± 9.3 and 53.2 ± 9.5, respectively. Internalizing problems scores averaged 57.1 ± 9.8 and 53.7 ± 9.8, respectively. VDD [25(OH)D <50 nmol/L] prevalence was 10.3%. VDD was associated with an adjusted 6.0 (95% CI: 3.0, 9.0) and 3.4 (95% CI: 0.1, 6.6) units higher CBCL and YSR externalizing problems scores, respectively, and an adjusted 3.6 (95% CI: 0.3, 6.9) units higher CBCL internalizing problems scores. The prevalence of clinical total externalizing problems was 1.8 (95% CI: 1.1, 3.1) times higher in children with VDD than that in children without VDD. DBP concentration below the population median was related to higher YSR aggressive behavior and anxious/depressed subscale scores and to higher prevalence of clinical total externalizing problems. The associations between DBP and behavior problems were not mediated through VDD. CONCLUSIONS VDD and low DBP in middle childhood are related to behavior problems in adolescence.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects after miniscrew assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) and their correlation with the age of the patients. Settings and sample population: Sample comprised 19 patients with maxillary atresia and posterior crossbite, treated with MARPE. Cone-beam computed tomographs (CBCT) were evaluated before and after expansion. Three patients were excluded since the midpalatal suture was not opened. Thus, 16 patients (11 female; 5 male) were evaluated, with a mean age of 24.92 years (s.d.=7.60). The time between the installation of MARPE and the second CBCT was, on average, 1.64 months (s.d.=1.12). Material and Methods Linear and angular measurements were performed: bone thickness and level, tooth inclination, transverse dental widths, and nasal base and jugula widths. Comparison was performed with dependent t-test and correlations with Pearson coefficient. Results MARPE was 84.2% successful. There was significant reduction in the buccal bone thickness of the first molars and an increase in the palatal bone thickness of all teeth. First molars showed significant buccal inclination. All transverse dimensions showed a significant increase. Older patients tended to show a less maxillary transverse skeletal increase. A greater maxillary transverse increase was accompanied by a greater intermolar width increase and also a greater buccal bone loss in the mesiobuccal roots of the maxillary first molars. Conclusions MARPE corrected the maxillary atresia in adult patients, with significant transverse increases, a slight decrease in buccal bone thickness and buccal inclination of the first molars, combining skeletal and dental effects. Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES We sought to determine the associations of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in middle childhood with externalizing and internalizing behavior problems in adolescence. SUBJECTS/METHODS Using gas-liquid chromatography, we quantified n-3 and n-6 PUFA in serum samples of 444 Colombian schoolchildren aged 5-12 years at the time of enrollment into a cohort study. After a median 6 years, adolescent externalizing and internalizing behavior problems were determined with the Youth Self Report (YSR) questionnaire. We estimated adjusted mean behavior problem score differences with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between quartiles of each PUFA using multivariable linear regression. We also considered as exposures the Δ6-desaturase (D6D) and Δ5-desaturase (D5D) enzyme activity indices. RESULTS Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was positively associated with externalizing problems; every standard deviation (SD) of DHA concentration was associated with an adjusted one unit higher externalizing problem score (95% CI: 0.1, 1.9). The D5D enzyme activity index was inversely related to externalizing problem scores. Alpha-linolenic acid concentration was positively associated with internalizing problem scores, whereas adrenic acid was inversely related to this outcome. CONCLUSIONS Serum PUFA in middle childhood were related to behavior problems in adolescence. Some of these associations might reflect the role of D5D enzyme activity.

Abstract
Notwithstanding the National Salmonella Control Programs, the latest data published by the European Food Safety Authority show an increase in Salmonella Enteritidis prevalence in laying hen flocks. For this reason, the implementation of innovative techniques such as phage therapy is needed to control Salmonella at farm level. Most common bacteriophage applications are a cocktail of 2 or more bacteriophages, as it has been described that cocktails could remove different Salmonella serotypes, thus providing cross efficacy. Nevertheless, resistance to the bacteriophage cocktail has been reported, resulting in a decrease in their effectiveness. Along these lines, some authors have reported the possibility of using autophage when commercial bacteriophage cocktails are not active against field strains. To our best knowledge, no autophage (bacteriophage isolated from the same environment where the pathogen is isolated) has been found to control Salmonella in laying hens. In this context, the aim of this study was to assess the application of autophage in reducing Salmonella Enteritidis in environmental and fecal samples in a layer farm. To this end, the bacteriophage was isolated from the same farm where the bacteria was present and was applied onto the facility installations and the animals, at 2 different times. After bacteriophage challenges, swab cloths from facility surfaces and feces samples were collected at 3 times according to the time spent after the bacteriophage challenge. The results obtained in our study showed that all the surface samples collected from the farm facilities after phage therapy were negative for Salmonella. Concerning faces samples, statistical differences were found in Salmonella counts, with the strongest decrease (1.78log10) occurring after the second challenge. Otherwise, depending of the moment of sampling, the results obtained were 2.34log10, 1.39log10, 0.56log10, and 0.97log10 cfu/g for T0, T1, T2, and T3 respectively. The study highlights the use of autophage therapy not only for Salmonella Enteritidis control in animals, but as a sanitizer in cleaning and disinfection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron deficiency (ID) in infancy is related to subsequent behavior problems. The effects of micronutrient status in middle childhood are uncertain. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to examine the associations of micronutrient status biomarkers in middle childhood with externalizing and internalizing behavior problems in adolescence. METHODS We assessed whether ID (ferritin <15 µg/L), anemia (hemoglobin <12.7 g/dL), or blood concentrations of zinc, vitamins A and B-12, and folate at ages 5-12 y were associated with externalizing or internalizing behavior problems in adolescence in 1042 schoolchildren from Bogotá, Colombia. Behavior problems were assessed with the Youth Self-Report questionnaire after a median 6.2 y of follow-up. Mean problem score differences with 95% CIs were estimated between categories of micronutrient status biomarkers with the use of multivariable linear regression. RESULTS Mean ± SD externalizing and internalizing problems scores were 52.6 ± 9.6 and 53.8 ± 9.9, respectively. Among boys, middle-childhood ID, anemia, and low plasma vitamin B-12 were associated with 5.9 (95% CI: 1.0, 10.7), 6.6 (95% CI: 1.9, 11.3), and 2.7 (95% CI: 0.4, 4.9) units higher mean externalizing problems scores in adolescence, respectively-after adjustment for baseline age, time spent watching television or playing video games, mother's height, and socioeconomic status. Also in boys, ID was related to an adjusted 6.4 (95% CI: 1.2, 11.6) units higher mean internalizing problems score. There were no associations among girls. Other micronutrient status biomarkers were not associated with behavior problems. CONCLUSIONS ID, anemia, and low vitamin B-12 in middle childhood are related to behavior problems in adolescent boys.This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03297970.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cancer development. Autophagy and apoptosis are critical processes for development and homeostasis in multicellular organisms and have been linked to a variety of disorders. We aimed to investigate whether the quantity and quality of dietary fat can influence these processes in the adipose tissue of obese people. METHODS A randomized, controlled trial within the LIPGENE study assigned 39 obese people with metabolic syndrome to 1 of 4 diets: (a) a high-saturated fatty acid diet, (b) a high-monounsaturated fatty acid (HMUFA) diet, and (c, d) two low-fat, high-complex carbohydrate diets supplemented with long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LFHCC n-3) or placebo (LFHCC), for 12 weeks each. RESULTS We found an increase in the expression of autophagy-related BECN1 and ATG7 genes after the long-term consumption of the HMUFA diet (p = 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively) and an increase in the expression of the apoptosis-related CASP3 gene after the long-term consumption of the LFHCC and LFHCC n-3 diets (p = 0.001 and p = 0.029, respectively). CASP3 and CASP7 gene expression changes correlated with HOMA index. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that the processes of autophagy and apoptosis in adipose tissue may be modified by diet and that the consumption of a diet rich in monounsaturated fat may contribute to adipose tissue homeostasis by increasing autophagy. They also reinforce the notion that apoptosis in adipose tissue is linked to insulin resistance. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00429195.

Abstract
Objetivo: analisar as percepções dos cirurgiões-dentistas sobre sua prática profissional no ambiente hospitalar. Material e Métodos: estudo exploratório, utilizando abordagens qualitativa e quantitativa. A população do estudo foi composta por 72 cirurgiões-dentistas cadastrados na Associação Brasileira de Odontologia do Alto Vale do Itajaí - ABOAVI. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevista guiado por roteiro. Os dados foram analisados ??por meio da criação de categorias baseadas nas respostas dos entrevistados. Resultados: foram consideradas 47 evocações, distribuídas em três categorias. As duas categorias mais citadas para justificar a importância da prática do cirurgião-dentista (DS) no ambiente hospitalar foram: prevenção do surgimento e / ou agravamento de patologias e integralidade da assistência ao paciente. Conclusão: para esse grupo de profissionais, a prática do SD no ambiente hospitalar é percebida como positiva, e está de acordo com a visão do cuidado integral que contribuirá para melhorar a saúde dos pacientes hospitalizados

Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo descritivo foi conhecer a percepção e nível de informação de adolescentes sobre saúde bucal. A população constou de alunos de uma escola da rede pública de um município de Santa Catarina. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi um questionário. Participaram 144 adolescentes; a idade média do grupo era de 14,6 anos. A maioria (82%) informou que a última consulta odontológica ocorreu a menos de um ano e o principal motivo foi rotina/prevenção; 90% receberam informações sobre saúde bucal, tendo como principal fonte o dentista. O gênero não influenciou (p=0,21) na indicação das fontes de informação. A pontuação média da autoavaliação, em uma escala de zero a dez pontos, foi de 7,76 para condições de saúde bucal, 7,77 para hábitos de higiene bucal e de 7,51 para aparência dos dentes. No item dor (nos dentes e/ou gengiva) nos últimos doze meses, a pontuação foi de 1,81. No domínio cognitivo, o pior desempenho foi para o conceito de cárie. Os adolescentes pesquisados evidenciaram um nível satisfatório de autopercepção e de conhecimento sobre saúde bucal.

Abstract
Morphea, or localized scleroderma, is an inflammatory disease that leads to sclerosis of the skin and underlying tissues due to excessive collagen deposition. Oral involvement is unusual and it may produce white linear fibrotic areas with a scar-like appearance, atrophy of tongue papillae, gingival recession and alveolar bone resorption. We report a case of a 13-year-old girl who consulted for progressive recession on the attached gingiva of her upper left incisors. She also presented a hypopigmented line on the left side skin of her upper lip, which continued through the vermilion and the lip mucosa, including the gingiva of the affected teeth. Clinical examination, blood tests, computerized axial tomography, echo-Doppler ultrasound and histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of morphea. Treatment with methotrexate and systemic corticosteroids was conducted. After 24 months, no other lesions appeared. No adverse side effects have been reported so far.

Abstract
<p>Campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis are the most frequently reported zoonoses and among the most common causes of diarrhoeal illness in the European Union and the United States, and their incidence appears to be increasing. <em>Campylobacter </em>species are routinely found in poultry, swine, cattle, dairy cows and sheep. So far, there are few descriptions of <em>Campylobacter </em>isolation from rabbits. Rabbit meat is a common item in the Mediterranean diet. In this context, the aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of <em>Campylobacter </em>spp. in healthy rabbits reared in intensive farms in the Alto Palancia region, eastern Spain. Caecal contents from 70 healthy does reared on 7 different farms were collected. Bacteriological culture was performed in accordance with ISO 10272-1:2006. All samples tested negative for <em>Campylobacter </em>spp. To our knowledge, this is the first study in which comprehensive monitoring was specifically carried out in order to provide data on the occurrence of thermophilic <em>Campylobacter </em>spp. in large intensive rabbit farms in Spain. However, further microbiological studies throughout the Spanish territory are needed to determine the prevalence and risk of other foodborne pathogens in rabbits at farm level.</p>

Abstract
BACKGROUND Micronutrients are essential to neurocognitive development; yet their role in educational outcomes is unclear. OBJECTIVE We examined the associations of micronutrient status biomarkers with the risk of grade repetition and rates of school absenteeism in a cohort of school children. METHODS We recruited 3156 children aged 5-12 y from public schools in Bogota, Colombia. Circulating ferritin, hemoglobin, zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin B-12; erythrocyte folate; and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were measured in blood samples obtained at the beginning of the year. Absenteeism was recorded weekly during the school year, and grade repetition was determined the next year. Risk ratios for grade repetition and rate ratios for absenteeism were estimated by categories of micronutrient status indicators with use of Poisson regression, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS The risk of grade repetition was 4.9%, and the absenteeism rate was 3.8 d per child-year of observation. Vitamin B-12 deficiency (<148 pmol/L) was associated with an adjusted 2.36-fold greater risk of grade repetition (95% CI: 1.03, 5.41; P = 0.04) compared with plasma concentrations ≥148 pmol/L. Other micronutrients were not related to grade repetition. Vitamin B-12 deficiency was also associated with school absenteeism rates. Compared with children with plasma vitamin B-12 concentrations ≥148 pmol/L, vitamin B-12-deficient children had a 1.89-times higher adjusted rate (95% CI: 1.53, 2.34; P < 0.0001). Anemia was related to a 72% higher rate (95% CI: 48%, 99%; P < 0.0001), whereas every 5-fL difference in MCV was associated with a 7% lower adjusted rate (95% CI: 4%, 10%; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin B-12 deficiency was associated with risk of grade repetition and school absenteeism rates in school children from Bogota, Colombia. The effects of correcting vitamin B-12 deficiency on educational outcomes and neurocognitive development of school children need to be determined in intervention studies.

Abstract
Introduction Border disease virus (BDV) causes congenital disorders in sheep and results in severe, but underestimated, economic losses worldwide. However, information about BDV strains affecting several ruminants worldwide is scarce. Therefore, antigenic and genetic classification of isolates from different geographical regions is important to enhance the knowledge of the epidemiology of BDV. Materials and methods Five pestiviruses isolated from lambs in an epidemic outbreak with an unusually high mortality in Spain in 1997 were characterised antigenically with a panel of monoclonal antibodies and genetically by sequencing within the 50 untranslated (50UTR) region of the genome. Results All the isolates were classified as BDV and showed a high homology with the Aveyron strain (Av), which was associated with an epidemic reported in sheep from the Aveyron region of France in 1984. Conclusions Classification of the isolates from this study provides valuable information on the molecular epidemiology of BDV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early age at menarche is associated with increased breast cancer risk. Red meat consumption in adolescence predicts breast cancer risk, but it is unknown whether it is also related to earlier menarche. OBJECTIVE We studied the association between intake of red meat at ages 5-12 y and age at menarche in a prospective study. METHODS We assessed usual diets with a food-frequency questionnaire in a group of 456 girls aged 8.4 ± 1.7 y and followed them for a median 5.6 y in Bogotá, Colombia. Girls were asked periodically about the occurrence and date of menarche. Median age at menarche was estimated with use of Kaplan-Meier survival probabilities by categories of red meat intake frequency. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the incidence of menarche by red meat intake frequency, adjusting for potential sociodemographic and dietary confounders including total energy intake and intake frequency of other animal food groups (dairy, poultry, freshwater fish, tuna/sardines, eggs, and innards). RESULTS Median age at menarche was 12.4 y. After adjustment for total energy intake, maternal parity, and socioeconomic status, red meat intake frequency was inversely associated with age at menarche. When compared with girls with red meat intake <4 times/wk, those consuming it ≥2 times/d had a significantly earlier age at menarche (HR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.41; P-trend = 0.0009). Incidentally, we found that girls with tuna/sardine intake >1 time/wk had a significantly later age at menarche (HR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.42, 0.90; P = 0.01) than those with intake <1 time/mo. Intake frequency of other animal food groups was not significantly associated with age at menarche. CONCLUSION Higher red meat intake frequency during childhood is associated with an earlier age at menarche, whereas greater fatty fish intake frequency is associated with a later menarcheal age.

Abstract
Essential oils (EO) and short-chain fatty acids have potential antimicrobial activity in broilers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a specific blend of EO and a combination of this blend of EO with sodium-butyrate on growth performance and Salmonella colonization in broilers. A total of 480 one-day-old male broilers were distributed into 5 treatments (8 pens per treatment and 12 birds per pen) and reared during 42 d in experimental conditions. Dietary treatments consisted of the addition of different doses of EO (0 mg/kg, control; 50 mg/kg, EO50 and 100 mg/kg, EO100) or a combination of EO with 1 g/kg of sodium-butyrate (B; EO50 + B, EOB50 and EO100 + B, EOB100) to a basal diet. All birds were orally infected with 10(8) cfu of Salmonella Enteritidis on d 7 of study. Individual BW and feed intake per pen were measured at arrival and on a weekly basis. The prevalence and enumeration of Salmonella in feces was determined per treatment at 72 h postinfection and on d 23 and 37 of study. At slaughter, cecal content and liver samples from 16 birds per treatment were cultured for Salmonella and cecal pH was measured. No differences were observed on growth performance among treatments. All fecal samples analyzed were positive for Salmonella from d 10 to the end of the rearing period. At slaughter, Salmonella contamination (positive samples) in cecum was lower in birds fed EOB50 compared with the other treatments (P < 0.05), whereas birds fed the control diet showed the highest colonization rates. The pH of the cecal content was not different among treatments. Thus, EO or its combination with sodium-butyrate did not affect growth performance. However, a clear effectiveness of these products was observed in Salmonella control, especially when low doses of EO were combined with sodium-butyrate (EOB50).

Abstract
Infection is an important cause of morbidity throughout childhood. Poor micronutrient status is a risk factor for infection-related morbidity in young children, but it is not clear whether these associations persist during school-age years. We examined the relation between blood concentrations of micronutrient status biomarkers and risk of gastrointestinal and respiratory morbidity in a prospective study of 2774 children aged 5-12 y from public schools in Bogotá, Colombia. Retinol, zinc, ferritin, mean corpuscular volume, hemoglobin, erythrocyte folate, and vitamin B-12 concentrations were measured in blood at enrollment into the cohort. Children were followed for 1 academic year for incidence of morbidity, including diarrhea with vomiting, cough with fever, earache or ear discharge with fever, and doctor visits. Compared with adequate vitamin A status (≥30.0 μg/dL), vitamin A deficiency (<10.0 μg/dL) was associated with increased risk of diarrhea with vomiting [unadjusted incidence rate ratio (IRR): 2.17; 95% CI: 0.95, 4.96; P-trend = 0.03] and cough with fever (unadjusted IRR: 2.36; 95% CI: 1.30, 4.31; P-trend = 0.05). After adjustment for several sociodemographic characteristics and hemoglobin concentrations, every 10 μg/dL plasma retinol was associated with 18% fewer days of diarrhea with vomiting (P < 0.001), 10% fewer days of cough with fever (P < 0.001), and 6% fewer doctor visits (P = 0.01). Every 1 g/dL of hemoglobin was related to 17% fewer days with ear infection symptoms (P < 0.001) and 5% fewer doctor visits (P = 0.009) after controlling for sociodemographic factors and retinol concentrations. Zinc, ferritin, mean corpuscular volume, erythrocyte folate, and vitamin B-12 status were not associated with morbidity or doctor visits. Vitamin A and hemoglobin concentrations were inversely related to rates of morbidity in school-age children. Whether vitamin A supplementation reduces the risk or severity of infection in children over 5 y of age needs to be determined.

Abstract
AIM To identify correlates of bias in self-reported anthropometry among reproductive-aged Colombian women and to correct overweight/obesity and obesity prevalence based on self-reported data using two calibration techniques. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Self-reported and objectively measured anthropometry were obtained from 597 women aged 21-55 years from Bogotá, Colombia. This study identified correlates of reporting bias (self-reported minus measured anthropometry) by examining its distribution across categories of sociodemographic characteristics, objectively measured anthropometry and body shape perception using linear regression. Next, weight status misclassification was assessed using self-reported anthropometry. Finally, multivariable linear regression and ROC curves were used to calibrate weight status misclassification from self-reported data; these techniques were applied in half of the study population and validated in the remaining half. RESULTS Women under-estimated weight by 2.0 ± 5.0 kg and over-estimated height by 0.6 ± 4.0 cm. Correlates of bias included objectively measured anthropometry and marital status. Self-reported BMI yielded spuriously low prevalences of overweight/obesity and obesity. The ROC approach effectively corrected overweight/obesity prevalence, while the regression method provided a more accurate estimate of obesity prevalence. CONCLUSIONS Bias in self-reported anthropometry varied with respect to objectively measured anthropometry and sociodemographic characteristics. BMI from self-reported anthropometry under-estimates overweight/obesity and obesity prevalence; calibration methods can effectively correct reporting bias.

Abstract
Dyspnea is a subjective sensation of difficult or uncomfortable breathing caused by increased excitation of brain respiratory centres,(1) and is usually secondary to pulmonary or cardiac disease.(2) Heart failure is a serious public health problem in industrialised countries, with an increasing prevalence and incidence. It is more common in the elderly, and is usually caused by a defect in myocardial contraction, coronary atherosclerosis, or less frequently, valvular disease.(3) Aortic insufficiency (AI) is one of them. It may originate from infective endocarditis, congenital or valvular heart disease, or rheumatic fever. It may lead to a medical emergency due to the inability of the left ventricle to adapt to the rapid increase in the end-diastolic volume caused by regurgitation of blood from aorta to left ventricle. If not corrected, the AI can lead to acute cardiogenic shock.(4.)

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is highly prevalent among children worldwide. The effects of VDD include alterations of the immune response and increased risk of infection but little evidence exists in school-age children. We investigated the association of vitamin D status with morbidity in a prospective study of school-age children from Bogotá, Colombia. METHODS We measured plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations in a random sample of 475 children (mean ± standard deviation age: 8.9 ± 1.6 years) and followed them for an academic year. Caregivers were asked to record daily information on the incidence of morbidity episodes using pictorial diaries. Baseline vitamin D status was classified according to 25(OH)D concentrations as deficient (<50 nmol/L), insufficient (≥50 and <75 nmol/L) or sufficient (≥75 nmol/L). We used Poisson regression to estimate incidence rate ratios and 95% confidence intervals for days with diarrhea, vomiting, diarrhea with vomiting, cough with fever and earache or discharge with fever, comparing vitamin D-deficient with vitamin D-sufficient children. Estimates were adjusted for child's age, sex and household socioeconomic status. RESULTS The prevalence of VDD was 10%; an additional 47% of children were vitamin D-insufficient. VDD was associated with increased rates of diarrhea with vomiting (adjusted incidence rate ratio: 2.05; 95% confidence interval: 1.19, 3.53) and earache/discharge with fever (adjusted incidence rate ratio: 2.36; 95% confidence interval: 1.26, 4.44). VDD was not significantly related to cough with fever. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that VDD is related to increased incidence of gastrointestinal and ear infections in school-age children. The effect of correcting VDD on reducing risk of these infections needs to be tested in supplementation trials.

Abstract
Background Repetitive element DNA methylation is related to prominent obesity-related chronic diseases including cancer and cardiovascular disease; yet, little is known of its relation with weight status. We examined associations of LINE-1 DNA methylation with changes in adiposity and linear growth in a longitudinal study of school-age children from Bogotá, Colombia. Methods We quantified methylation of LINE-1 elements from peripheral leukocytes of 553 children aged 5–12 years at baseline using pyrosequencing technology. Anthropometric characteristics were measured periodically for a median of 30 months. We estimated mean change in three age-and sex-standardized indicators of adiposity: body mass index (BMI)-for-age Z-score, waist circumference Z-score, and subscapular-to-triceps skinfold thickness ratio Z-score according to quartiles of LINE-1 methylation using mixed effects regression models. We also examined associations with height-for-age Z-score. Results There were non-linear, inverse relations of LINE-1 methylation with BMI-for-age Z-score and the skinfold thickness ratio Z-score. After adjustment for baseline age and socioeconomic status, boys in the lowest quartile of LINE-1 methylation experienced annual gains in BMI-for-age Z-score and skinfold thickness ratio Z-score that were 0.06 Z/year (P = 0.04) and 0.07 Z/year (P = 0.03), respectively, higher than those in the upper three quartiles. The relation of LINE-1 methylation and annual change in waist circumference followed a decreasing monotonic trend across the four quartiles (P trend = 0.02). DNA methylation was not related to any of the adiposity indicators in girls. There were no associations between LINE-1 methylation and linear growth in either sex. Conclusions Lower LINE-1 DNA methylation is related to development of adiposity in boys.

Abstract
Low birthweight and preterm birth are associated with adverse health outcomes later in life, but acquisition of accurate birthweight information is not always feasible in large epidemiological studies. We examined the validity of child birthweight and gestational age recall by mothers, and the extent to which recall bias affects associations between birthweight and childhood obesity in children from Bogotá, Colombia. We surveyed mothers of 3,202 schoolchildren aged 5-12 years about child's weight and gestational age at birth, and sociodemographic characteristics. In a subsample of 279 children, we obtained hospital birth records and extracted birthweight, gestational age, and other perinatal information. Mean birthweight (SD) was 3,106 (739) grams according to maternal recall and 2,977 (462) grams according to hospital records (difference 129 g; 95% CI = 55, 203). Thirty-three percent of mothers recalled their children's birthweights exactly as they appeared in hospital records. Mother's age and fewer years of education were each significantly associated with greater birthweight recall bias. Specificity of low birthweight (<2,500 g) and preterm birth (<37 weeks gestation) from maternal recall was 0.95 and 0.86, respectively; however, sensitivity was lower (0.66 and 0.67, respectively). Associations between recalled birthweight and BMI-for-age or overweight during school age were weaker than those with hospital record birthweight. Maternal birthweight recall 5-12 years after birth differs from hospital record birthweight by a clinically meaningful amount. Birthweight recall should be used with caution in epidemiological studies conducted in this and comparable settings. Associations between birthweight and obesity may be stronger than they appear when using recalled birthweight.
