Abstract
Introduction Border disease virus (BDV) causes congenital disorders in sheep and results in severe, but underestimated, economic losses worldwide. However, information about BDV strains affecting several ruminants worldwide is scarce. Therefore, antigenic and genetic classification of isolates from different geographical regions is important to enhance the knowledge of the epidemiology of BDV. Materials and methods Five pestiviruses isolated from lambs in an epidemic outbreak with an unusually high mortality in Spain in 1997 were characterised antigenically with a panel of monoclonal antibodies and genetically by sequencing within the 50 untranslated (50UTR) region of the genome. Results All the isolates were classified as BDV and showed a high homology with the Aveyron strain (Av), which was associated with an epidemic reported in sheep from the Aveyron region of France in 1984. Conclusions Classification of the isolates from this study provides valuable information on the molecular epidemiology of BDV.

Abstract
The cohesin complex plays a key role for the maintenance of sister chromatid cohesion and faithful chromosome segregation in both mitosis and meiosis. This complex is formed by two structural maintenance of chromosomes protein family (SMC) subunits and two non-SMC subunits: an α-kleisin subunit SCC1/RAD21/REC8 and an SCC3-like protein. Several studies carried out in different species have revealed that the distribution of the cohesin subunits along the chromosomes during meiotic prophase I is not regular and that some subunits are distinctly incorporated at different cell stages. However, the accurate distribution of the different cohesin subunits in condensed meiotic chromosomes is still controversial. Here, we describe the dynamics of the cohesin subunits SMC1α, SMC3, RAD21 and SA1 during both meiotic divisions in grasshoppers. Although these subunits show a similar patched labelling at the interchromatid domain of metaphase I bivalents, SMCs and non-SMCs subunits do not always colocalise. Indeed, SA1 is the only cohesin subunit accumulated at the centromeric region of all metaphase I chromosomes. Additionally, non-SMC subunits do not appear at the interchromatid domain in either single X or B chromosomes. These data suggest the existence of several cohesin complexes during metaphase I. The cohesin subunits analysed are released from chromosomes at the beginning of anaphase I, with the exception of SA1 which can be detected at the centromeres until telophase II. These observations indicate that the cohesin components may be differentially loaded and released from meiotic chromosomes during the first and second meiotic divisions. The roles of these cohesin complexes for the maintenance of chromosome structure and their involvement in homologous segregation at first meiotic division are proposed and discussed.

Abstract
Great genome size (GS) variations described in desert-specialist octodontid rodents include diploid species ( Octomys mimax and Octodontomys gliroides ) and putative tetraploid species ( Tympanoctomys barrerae and Pipanacoctomys aureus ). Because of its high DNA content, elevated chromosome number, and gigas effect, the genome of T. barrerae is claimed to have resulted from tetraploidy. Alternatively, the origin of its GS has been attributed to the accumulation of repetitive sequences. To better characterize the extent and origin of these repetitive DNA, self-genomic in situ hybridization (self-GISH), whole-comparative genomic hybridization (W-CGH), and conventional GISH were conducted in mitotic and meiotic chromosomes. Self-GISH on T. barrerae mitotic plates together with comparative self-GISH (using its closest relatives) discriminate a pericentromeric and a telomeric DNA fraction. As most of the repetitive sequences are pericentromeric, it seems that the large GS of T. barrerae is not due to highly repeated sequences accumulated along chromosomes arms. W-CGH using red-labeled P. aureus DNA and green-labeled O. mimax DNA simultaneously on chromosomes of T. barrerae revealed a yellow-orange fluorescence over a repetitive fraction of the karyotype. However, distinctive red-only fluorescent signals were also detected at some centromeres and telomeres, indicating closer homology with the DNA sequences of P. aureus. Conventional GISH using an excess of blocking DNA from either P. aureus or O. mimax labeled only a fraction of the T. barrerae genome, indicating its double genome composition. These data point to a hybrid nature of the T. barrerae karyotype, suggesting a hybridization event in the origin of this species.

Abstract
In the present study, and as a sincere tribute from the Cytogenetics teams from Madrid to Professor Máximo Drets on his 80th birthday, we have analyzed and compared 3 different grasshopper species with different synaptic patterns, a standard pattern, a second pattern with synapsis restricted to the proximal regions, and a third pattern with synapsis restricted to the distal regions. In the 3 species we have thoroughly analyzed the relationships among cohesin axis morphogenesis, formation of double strand breaks (DSBs) and recombination initiation. Our results demonstrate that in every case recombination initiation precedes synapsis, and that there is a direct relationship between the absence of meiotic recombination and the existence of particular unsynapsed chromosomal regions during prophase I. Based on our results we propose and discuss the mechanisms underlying the existence of incomplete synapsis and the localization of chiasma in wild species.

Abstract
In situ gamma spectrometry provides a fast method to determine (137)Cs inventories in soils. To improve the accuracy of the estimates, one can use not only the information on the photopeak count rates but also on the peak to forward-scatter ratios. Before applying this procedure to field measurements, a calibration including several experimental simulations must be carried out in the laboratory. In this paper it is shown that Monte Carlo methods are a valuable tool to minimize the number of experimental measurements needed for the calibration.

Abstract
A new system has been developed for the detection of low radioactivity levels of fission products and actinides using coincidence techniques. The device combines a phoswich detector for alpha/beta/gamma-ray recognition with a fast digital card for electronic pulse analysis. The phoswich can be used in a coincident mode by identifying the composed signal produced by the simultaneous detection of alpha/beta particles and X-rays/gamma particles. The technique of coincidences with phoswich detectors was proposed recently to verify the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (NTBT) which established the necessity of monitoring low levels of gaseous fission products produced by underground nuclear explosions. With the device proposed here it is possible to identify the coincidence events and determine the energy and type of coincident particles. The sensitivity of the system has been improved by employing liquid scintillators and a high resolution low energy germanium detector. In this case it is possible to identify simultaneously by alpha/gamma coincidence transuranic nuclides present in environmental samples without necessity of performing radiochemical separation. The minimum detectable activity was estimated to be 0.01 Bq kg(-1) for 0.1 kg of soil and 1000 min counting.

Abstract
We present the analytical design of an imaging spectrometer based on the three-concentric-mirror (Offner) configuration. The approach presented allows for the rapid design of this class of system. Likewise, high-optical-quality spectrometers are obtained without the use of aberration-corrected gratings, even for high speeds. Our approach is based on the calculation of both the meridional and the sagittal images of an off-axis object point. Thus, the meridional and sagittal curves are obtained in the whole spectral range. Making these curves tangent to each other for a given wavelength results in a significant decrease in astigmatism, which is the dominant residual aberration.RMS spot radii less than 5 mm are obtained for speeds as high as f/2.5 and a wavelength range of 0.4-1.0 microm. A design example is presented using a free interactive optical design tool.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) artifacts have been described in many articles published in the literature. We present the case of a 72 year old man who was admitted due to left inferior limb weakness. MRI imaging demonstrated an acute right infarction of the right posterior cerebral artery. In the right frontal lobe a metallic artifact was demonstrated as well. The artifact showed a central signal void and it was surrounded by a high signal intensity rim. His aortic valve had been replaced 12 years earlier. This indicates that the artifact is in fact due to a small metallic fragment embolization during cardiac surgery.

Abstract
Faecal samples from 146 diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids, and from 511 healthy sheep and goats were screened for the presence of Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC). In healthy sheep and goats, VTEC were isolated in 24.4 and 16.2% of the animals, respectively. Moreover, VTEC were detected in 3.1 and 5.9% of the diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids, respectively. These data suggest that VTEC seems not to be associated with diarrhoea in lambs and goat kids. Only four VTEC strains were eae-positive. The absence of the eae gene in most of these VTEC strains could indicate that these strains are less virulent for humans that the classical eae-positive enterohaemorrhagic E. coli types. However, almost half (42.9%) and 12.2% of VTEC strains isolated from healthy sheep and goats, respectively, belonged to serotypes associated with severe diseases in humans.

Abstract
We present a serie of 1,093 patients that underwent, along 10 years, endoscopic surgery due to paranasal sinus pathology in a third level hospital. The technique used is described, the long term results analysed, as well as the minor and major complications specially the CSF fistulas and their cause.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the prevalence and characteristics of verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and necrotoxigenic E. coli (NTEC) in healthy cattle. METHODS AND RESULTS Faecal samples from 412 healthy cattle were screened for the presence of VTEC, EPEC and NTEC. Four isolates from each sample were studied. VTEC, EPEC and NTEC were isolated in 8.7%, 8.2% and 9.9% of the animals, respectively. VTEC and NTEC were isolated more frequently from calves and heifers than from adults. Seventy (4.2%), 69 (4.2%) and 74 (4.5%) of the 1648 E. coli isolates were VTEC, EPEC and NTEC, respectively. Seventeen (24.3%) of the VTEC strains were eae-positive. Thirty-six (51.4%) of VTEC strains belonged to E. coli serogroups associated with haemorrhagic colitis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome in humans. The serogroups most prevalent among the EPEC strains were O10, O26, O71, O145 and O156. CONCLUSIONS Healthy cattle are a reservoir of VTEC, EPEC and NTEC. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Although most of the VTEC strains were eae-negative, a high percentage of VTEC strains belonged to serogroups associated with severe disease in humans.

Abstract
Ubiquitination is a universal protein degradation pathway in which the molecules of 8.5-kDa proteolytic peptide ubiquitin are covalently attached to the epsilon-amino group of the substrate's lysine residues. Little is known about the importance of this highly conserved mechanism for protein recycling in mammalian gametogenesis and fertilization. The data obtained by the students and faculty of the international training course Window to the Zygote 2000 demonstrate the accumulation of ubiquitin-cross-reactive structures in the trophoblast, but not in the inner cell mass of the expanding bovine and mouse blastocysts. This observation suggests that a major burst of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis occurs in the trophoblast of mammalian peri-implantation embryos. This event may be important for the success of blastocyst hatching, differentiation of embryonic stem cells into soma and germ line, and/or implantation in both naturally conceived and reconstructed mammalian embryos.

Abstract
Quinolone resistance was studied in potentially pathogenic and non-pathogenic Escherichia coli strains from healthy ruminants. In cattle, 5.9% of the strains were resistant to nalidixic acid and 4.9% were resistant to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, whereas in sheep and goats only 0.5% and 1.4%, respectively, of the strains were resistant to nalidixic acid and none to fluoroquinolones. Most of the strains resistant to quinolones were non-pathogenic strains isolated from cattle. However, the results of this study do not show that the potentially pathogenic E. coli strains isolated from healthy ruminants are more susceptible to quinolones than the non-pathogenic E. coli strains.

Abstract
Attaching and effacing Escherichia coli (AEEC) strains isolated from diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids were characterized for intimin (eae) and EspB (espB) gene subtypes by PCR and sequencing, and for genetic relatedness by PFGE. Fifty (23 ovine and 27 caprine) AEEC strains of 398 (246 ovine and 152 caprine) analysed were detected by colony blot hybridization. These strains were epidemiologically unrelated since they were isolated from different outbreaks of neonatal diarrhoea over a long period. Ovine AEEC strains belonged to serogroups O2, O4, O26, O80, O91 or were untypable, and caprine strains belonged to serogroups O3, O153 and O163. Two intimin subtypes were detected among the ovine and caprine strains studied. Most of the strains (43/50) had the beta type intimin gene, but seven ovine strains possessed a variant gamma type intimin gene (gamma(V)). Analysis of deduced amino acid sequences of the eae gene revealed that the sequences of beta intimin of ovine and caprine strains were virtually identical to those of beta intimin of rabbit EPEC, human EPEC clone 2 and swine AEEC, whereas the gamma(V) intimin present in seven ovine strains had 75-76% identity with gamma intimin of human EHEC clone 1 strains, and 96% of identity with intimin of the human EHEC strain 95NR1 of serotype O111:H-. A PCR test was developed to identify the three different espB gene subtypes, espB of human EPEC clone 1 (espBalpha), espB of human EHEC clone 1 (espBgamma) and espB of rabbit EPEC and human EPEC clone 2 (espBbeta). There was close correlation between the intimin beta type and the espBbeta gene subtype in the ovine and caprine AEEC strains. The seven ovine strains possessing the gamma(V) intimin gene possessed the espBalpha gene subtype. None of the strains studied possessed the espBgamma gene found in human O157:H7 EHEC strains. PFGE analysis of genomic DNA of selected strains showed a great diversity among strains. Cluster analysis of PFGE patterns showed greater divergence between strains with the gamma(V) intimin gene than between strains with the beta intimin gene. This study showed that most of the AEEC strains isolated from diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids possessed beta intimin and espB genes identical to those of rabbit EPEC, and they may be associated with enteric disease in small ruminants.

Abstract
We propose a technique for time resolution of the polarization state of ultrashort light pulses that also provides the overall time-varying phase of the pulse. This method is based on a spectral polarimetric analysis of the pulse after propagation through a Kerr medium. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated both numerically and experimentally.

Abstract
A group of 47 bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) strains isolated from a variety of bovine tissues from eight different geographical areas of Spain and two BVDV strains isolated from a cell line were characterized antigenically with a panel of 23 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The mAbs were directed at one of three viral proteins: E2, Erns and NS2-3. A peroxidase-linked assay was used to test the mAbs for reactivity against infected cell monolayers. The data were analysed by two computational methods: the Antigenic Distance Program (MAP) and the Phylogeny Inference Package (PHYLIP), and compared with those obtained previously using the same mAbs with other pestiviruses, including reference strains and UK field isolates. All the Spanish field strains studied appeared to be broadly similar to reference strains of BVDV and were included in the subgroup of classical BVDV, meanwhile the two strains isolated from a cell line were included in the subgroup of atypical pestiviruses.

Abstract
Faeces samples from 218, one to 30 days old, diarrheic dairy calves in 65 dairy herds were screened for the presence of rotavirus and concurrent infections with coronavirus, Cryptosporidium, F5+ Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Calves were grouped according to their age as follows: 1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 22-30 days. Rotavirus infection was detected in 46.9%, 45.6%, 33.8% and 48.3% of the calves in the respective age-groups. No significant differences in the detection rate of rotavirus were found among calves on the different age-groups. Rotavirus was the only enteropathogen detected in 39 of the 93 (41.9%) diarrheic calves positive to this agent. Concurrent infections with other enteropathogen(s) were detected in 31.3%, 33.3%, 20.6% and 3.4% of the rotavirus infected calves in the age-groups 1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 22-30 d, respectively. A significant age-associated decrease in the detection rate of mixed infections (p < 0.01) was found. The detection rates of the other enteropathogens considered in calves with rotavirus infection were 20.4% for coronavirus, 85.2% for Cryptosporidium, 16.7% for F5+ E. coli and 1.8% for Salmonella.

Abstract
Fecal samples from 246, 1-90-days old diarrhoeic dairy calves in 72 herds were screened for the presence of cytotoxic necrotizing factors (CNF)-producing Escherichia coli (NTEC). NTEC were detected by tissue culture assays and PCR in 39 (15.8%) of the diarrheic calves, and the majority of these animals (34 of 39, ca. 87.2%) were infected by NTEC producing CNF2. Calves were grouped according to their age (1-7 days, 8-14 days, 15-21 days, 22-30 days and 31-90 days) and analyses of prevalence were done by the Mantel-Haenzsel chi2-test for trend. A significant age-associated increase in the prevalence of NTEC producing CNF2 (p<0.0001) was found. Eighty-one (8.4%) of the 958 E. coli isolates from the 246 diarrheic calves were positive for CNF in the tissue culture assays. These strains were analyzed by PCR and this technique showed that three (3.7%) strains were CNF1-positive and 75 (92.6%) were CNF2-positive. Moreover, three of the strains positive in the tissue culture assays were negative by PCR. These strains were subsequently assayed in several biological tests (rabbit skin test, mouse intraperitoneal test and mouse footpad test) which showed that they were really NTEC, probably producing CNF2, but with some different properties to classical strains producing CNF2. NTEC strains producing CNF2 belonged to different serogroups (O2, O7, O9, O14, O15, O41, O43, O45, O55, O76, O86, O88, O109, O115, O123, O128, O153 and O159) than strains producing CNF1 (O11 and O32) or PCR-negative strains (O111). Moreover, a strong association between CNF2 and F17 fimbriae was found (78.6% of CNF2-positive strains were F17-positive, whereas only 22.9% of CNF2-negative strains were F17-positive).

Abstract
Forty-five ovine and caprine nonenterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains producing F17-related fimbriae were characterized with respect to the fimbrial structural subunit and adhesin subtypes produced. In addition, several characteristics related to the virulence of strains producing F17 fimbriae were studied. Most of the strains (73%) possessed the f17cA structural subunit gene, whereas the f17aA and f17dA genes were detected only on three (6%) and two (4%) strains, respectively. The f17bA gene was not detected. All but one of these strains possessed the f17G genes of the adhesin subfamily II. The only strain having the f17G gene of subfamily I possessed the structural subunit gene f17dA. Sequencing of the f17A and f17G genes of four selected strains confirmed the association of f17cA and f17dA structural subunit genes with the f17G genes of the adhesin subfamily II. These results indicated that adhesins of the subfamily II are prominent among ovine and caprine isolates and that they are indistinctly associated with the F17 structural subunit subtypes on these field strains. CS31A- and CNF2-related genes were not detected. Most of the strains adhered in vitro to ovine intestinal brush borders (36 of 45) and agglutinated the erythrocytes of different species in the presence of D-mannose (39 of 45). F17-positive strains produced colicin V (57%) and were resistant to the bactericidal effect of serum (91%) in significantly higher percentages than F17-negative strains (34% produced colicin V, and 66% were serum resistant). Thus, most of the studied ovine and caprine strains showed phenotypic characteristics of septicemic strains.

Cryptosporidium infection was detected in 43.8%, 71.9%, 63.2% and 6.9% of the calves in the respective age groups. Significant differences in the detection rate of Cryptosporidium were found between the age group 22-30 days and all other age groups, and between the age group 1-7 days and the age groups 8-14 days and 15-21 days. Cryptosporidium was the only enteropathogen detected in 60 of the 114 (52.6%) diarrheic calves. Concurrent infections with other enteropathogen(s) were detected in 64.3%, 46.3%, 39.5% and 0% of the Cryptosporidium-infected calves in the age groups 1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 22-30 days, respectively. A significant age-associated decrease in the detection rate of mixed infections (p < 0.05) was found. The detection rates of the other enteropathogens considered in calves with Cryptosporidium infection were 87% for rotavirus, 11.1% for coronavirus, 27.8% for F5+ E. coli and 1.8% for Salmonella.

Abstract
Faecal samples from 221, 1-30-days-old, diarrhoeic dairy calves were screened for the presence of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) and eae-positive non-VTEC. Calves were grouped according to their age (1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 22-30 days) and analyses of prevalences were done by Mantel-Haenzsel chi 2-test for trend. VTEC and eae-positive non-VTEC were detected in 20 (9.0%) and 18 (8.1%) of the diarrhoeic calves, respectively. A significant age-associated increase in the prevalence of VTEC (p = 0.0001), but not in the prevalence of eae-positive non-VTEC (p = 0.381), was found. Significant differences in VTEC prevalence were found between the age-group 22-30 days and in all other age-groups. 43 (5.0%) of the 861 E. coli isolates from the 221 diarrhoeic calves were VTEC, and 30 (69.8%) of these strains produced VT1 only. More than one-half of the VTEC strains (55.8%) were positive for the eae gene and all these eae-positive VTEC strains produced VT1 only. A high percentage (76.7%) of VTEC strains belonged to E. coli serogroups (O4, O26, O39, O91, O113, O128 and O145) associated with haemorrhagic colitis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome in humans. 51 (5.9%) of the E. coli strains studied were eae-positive non-VTEC and the serogroups most prevalent among these strains were O4, O14, O26 and O123. Only four of the eae-positive strains were also espB-positive by hybridization with a probe from a human EPEC isolate and none of these strains produced VT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enoxaparin and other low-molecular-weight heparins are widely used to prevent and treat thromboembolic disorders. Cutaneous reactions secondary to enoxaparin injections include delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions described as erythematous, infiltrated plaques at injection sites. We studied three cases of erythematous infiltrated plaques after enoxaparin injection in order to establish the allergenic importance of this low-molecular-weight heparin. METHODS Patch tests were performed with sodium heparin, calcium heparin, calcium enoxaparin, and calcium nadroparin. A subcutaneous test with calcium heparin and an intravenous challenge test with sodium heparin were done. A punch biopsy was obtained from an erythematous plaque in one patient. RESULTS Patch tests were negative to calcium heparin in all patients, positive to enoxaparin and nadroparin in two patients, and positive to sodium heparin in one patient. In two patients, the subcutaneous challenge test was positive, the intravenous challenge test was negative, and the histopathologic appearance of the biopsy resembled a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. CONCLUSIONS These cases provide evidence of type IV hypersensitivity and the possibility of crossed-allergenicity among unfractionated heparin and low-molecular-weight heparins. We show that the subcutaneous challenge test is the most reliable diagnostic measure.

Abstract
Faecal samples from 218 diarrheic dairy calves in 65 dairy herds, selected by convenience, were screened for the presence of rotavirus, coronavirus, Cryptosporidium spp., F5+ Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Animals surveyed were from 1 to 30 days old. Cryptosporidium and rotavirus were the most commonly detected agents (52.3% and 42.7% of the samples positive, respectively). F5+ E. coli was detected in the faeces of 11.9% of the calves and bovine coronavirus was detected in the faeces of 7.3% of the calves. Salmonella spp. was only found in the faeces of two calves (0.9%). Mixed infections with two or more agents occurred in 28% of the calves. Concurrent infection of rotavirus and Cryptosporidium was found in 21.6% of the calves. Two tests were used for the detection of rotavirus (a commercial ELISA and PAGE), F5+ E. coli (ELISA and bacterial culture) and Cryptosporidium (ELISA and microscopy). The validity of the commercial ELISA for the detection of rotavirus, F5+ E. coli and Cryptosporidium in faeces from diarrheic calves was evaluated using PAGE, bacterial culture and microscopy as gold standard, respectively. The ELISA showed a very low sensitivity (28.6%) for the detection of F5+ E. coli compared to bacterial culture.

Abstract
The mammalian blastocyst comprises an inner cell mass (ICM) and a trophectoderm cell layer. In this study the allocation of blastomeres to either cell lineage was compared between murine, porcine and bovine blastocysts. Chemical permeation of trophectoderm cells by the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 in combination with DNA-specific fluorochromes resulted in the differential staining of trophectoderm and ICM. Confocal microscopy confirmed the exclusive permeation of trophectoderm and the internal localisation of intact ICM cells in bovine blastocysts. Overall, differential cell counts were obtained in approximately 85% of the embryos assessed. Mean (+/-SEM) total cell numbers were 72.2+/-3.1 and 93.1+/-5 for in vivo derived murine (n = 41) and porcine (n = 21) expanded blastocysts, respectively. Corresponding ICM cell number counts revealed ICM/total cell number ratios of 0.27 and 0.21, respectively. Comparison of in vivo (n = 20) and in vitro derived bovine embryos on day 8 (n = 29) or day 9 (n = 29) revealed a total cell number of 195.25+/-9.9, 166.14+/-9.9 and 105+/-6.7 at the expanded blastocyst stage with corresponding ICM/total cell ratios of 0.27, 0.23 and 0.23, respectively. While total cell numbers differed significantly among the three groups of bovine embryos (p < 0.05), the ICM/total cell ratio did not. These results indicate that a similar proportion of cells is allocated to the ICM among blastocysts of genetically divergent species.

Abstract
Fifty-five Escherichia coli strains isolated from 55 diarrhoeic goat kids from 13 flocks in Spain were serotyped and investigated for production of enterotoxins (LT and STa), verotoxins (VT1 and VT2), cytotoxic necrotizing factors (CNF1 and CNF2), alpha-hemolysin (Hly) and enterohemolysin (EntHly), and for antibiotic resistance. Only 3 (5%) strains were toxigenic: 1 VT1+EntHly+ (serogroup O8) and 2 CNF2+ (both of serogroup O153). The strains serotyped belonged to 19 serogroups. However, 31 (56%) were of one nine serogroups (O3, O8, O9, O10, O11, O21, O44, O103 and O153) and only three of them (O8, O9 and O11) accounted for 29% of the strains. The highest percentages of antibiotic resistance in order of frequency were: streptomycin (93%), sulfadiazine (89%), tetracyline (84%), kanamycin (82%), neomycin (82%) and ampicillin (69%). We conclude that E. coli strains isolated from diarrhoeic goat kids are usually non-toxigenic and belong to a large number of serogroups.

Abstract
The age of the sheep donating neutrophils had a marked influence in vitro on their phagocytic ability with respect to Staphylococcus aureus and S aureus subspecies anaerobius. Neutrophils from lambs five to eight weeks old phagocytosed these organisms significantly less efficiently (P < 0.001) than neutrophils from adults two to four years old. However, neutrophils from the young animals phagocytosed S aureus significantly (P < 0.001) better than S aureus subspecies anaerobius (61.5 v 53.8 per cent), whereas there was no significant difference in the ability of the neutrophils from adult sheep to phagocytose S aureus and S aureus subspecies anaerobius (68.2 v 68.2 per cent).

Abstract
The in vitro activities of 14 anti-microbial agents were determined against 92 strains of E. coli isolated from lambs (60 strains) and kids (32 strains) affected by neonatal diarrhoea. The overall percentage of resistant strains to streptomycin, sulphadimethoxine and tetracycline was very high (above 70%). A high level of resistance (from 30% to 50%) to ampicillin, kanamycin, neomycin and chloramphenicol was also detected. The E. coli strains were highly susceptible to cephalosporins, polymyxin and quinolones. Most of the strains showed multiresistance: 77.2% of isolates were resistant to at least two antibiotics, 55.4% were resistant to at least four antibiotics and 33.7% were resistant to at least six antibiotics. A total of 34 antibiotypes could be distinguished.

Abstract
One hundred and forty-four Escherichia coli strains isolated from 144 diarrhoeic lambs (5 to 21 days old) from 38 flocks in Spain were serotyped and investigated for production of enterotoxins (LT and STa), verotoxins (VT1 and VT2), cytotoxic necrotizing factors (CNF1 and CNF2), alpha-haemolysin (Hly) and enterohaemolysin (EntHly), for necrotic and lethal activities and for antibiotic resistance. The strains belonged to 39 different serogroups; however, 58% were of one of 13 serogroups (O4, O6, O7, O8, O9, O11, O23, O26, O77, O80, O101, O103 and O161) and only four of them (O8, O9, O11 and O77) accounted for 34% of strains. In total 10 (7%) toxigenic strains were detected: two LT+, two VT1+ EntHly+, four VT1+ EntHly-, one CNF1+ Hly+ and one CNF2+. The highest percentages of antibiotic resistance were reached in the group of antibiotics (tetracycline, streptomycin, sulphadiazine, ampicillin, kanamycin, neomycin, chloramphenicol, trimethoprim and cotrimoxazole) that are most generally used by Spanish veterinary clinics. We conclude that E. coli strains isolated from diarrhoeic lambs are not generally toxigenic and belong to a large number of serogroups.

Abstract
In this study the susceptibility of 91 methicillin-resistant and -susceptible Staphylococcus intermedius strains (MRSI and MSSI, respectively) against 15 antimicrobial agents was determined. The activity of the antimicrobial agents was studied at pH 7.2 and pH 8.5. Methicillin was more active at pH 7.2 (28 strains methicillin-resistant) than at pH 8.5 (55 strains methicillin-resistant). Gentamicin showed excellent activity, with only 3 strains resistant at pH 8.5. However, gentamicin would have to be administered parenterally. Oxytetracycline cannot be recommended for treatment of canine staphylococcal dermatitis, due to the high percentage (over 25%) of strains that were found to be resistant. Clindamycin showed little activity in inhibiting growth of the strains studied, the percent resistance at pH 7.2 was 93.4%. Rifampin behaved differently at the two pH values. However, a close relationship was noted between methicillin-resistant and rifampin-resistant strains, particularly at the lower pH. Of the fluoroquinolones, ciprofloxacin or enrofloxacin would be a good useful alternative for the treatment of methicillin-resistant strains of S. intermedius. Lastly, very high resistance to sulphamethoxypyridazine was found, as was the case with trimethoprim and a combination of trimethoprim/sulphamethoxypyridazine, against not only MRSI but also MSSI strains.

Abstract
To examine sex and development relationships in porcine embryos in early gestation, 10 gilts were killed on Day 4, 5, or 6 post mating (first day of standing estrus = Day 0). Embryos recovered immediately after slaughter were cultured in Medium 199 with colcemid (0.05mug/ml), fixed on slides, and stained with 4% Giemsa. The number of cells in each specimen was counted from the slides, and, whenever cell dispersion allowed, sex was determined by presence or absence of the Y-chromosome in at least 2 spreads from each embryo. Three gilts slaughtered on Day 4 yielded 2- and 4-cell stage embryos (n = 38), but no data on sex could be obtained due to lack of mitosis or readable metaphase spreads. Three Day 5 litters had individual specimens ranging from 8 to 14 cells (n = 8), 32 to 64 cells (n = 10), and 13 to 31 cells (n = 11), with the sex determined in 15 of these. Cell numbers ranged from 18 to 165 (n = 14), 16 to 32 (n = 9), 36 to 82 (n = 12), and 16 to 30 (n = 9) in the 4 gilts slaughtered on Day 6, with the sex determined in 26 of these. Embryos within each litter were divided into low, medium and high cell numbers by 3 equal divisions of the range of cell numbers. Three Day-5 embryos and 1 Day-6 embryo were lost during preparation; neither the cell numbers nor the sex could be determined in 4 Day-5 and in 3 Day-6 embryos. The overall sex ratio approximated 1:1, but on Day 5, the ratios for males to females were 0:5, 1:3 and 6:0 for the low, medium and high cell number groups, respectively. Embryos of undetermined sex in these same groups numbered 3, 1 and 3, respectively. On Day 6 the distribution was 1:11, 4:2 and 8:0 in favor of the males, while embryos of undetermined sex in the low, medium and high cell number groups numbered 5, 7 and 2, respectively. Chi-square analysis of the combined Day-5 and Day-6 results indicated the presence of significantly more females among embryos with low cell numbers and more males in the high cell number group (P < 0.01).

Abstract
A study was made of the susceptibility of 91 strains of Staphylococcus intermedius, isolated from staphylococcal dermatitis of dogs, to 11 beta-lactam antimicrobial agents. The activity of these antimicrobial agents against all strains was tested at pH 7.2 and 8.5. Finally, a comparative study was made of the susceptibility of these micro-organisms, dividing them into six groups: beta-lactamase positive and negative, methicillin resistant and susceptible and oxacillin resistant and susceptible. Only three of the 11 antimicrobial agents studied exhibited satisfactory behaviour at the two pH levels studied: mezlocillin, cefazolin and cefalotine. There was a good correlation at pH 8.5 between methicillin-resistant strains and those resistant to penicillin G, ampicillin, amoxycillin, cefamandole and cefuroxime. This correlation was not observed, however, between oxacillin-resistant strains and strains resistant to the other antimicrobial agents studied.

Abstract
The in vitro activities of four fluoroquinolone compounds were tested against 92 Escherichia coli strains of ovine and caprine origin under aerobic and anaerobic incubation conditions. The four fluoroquinolones proved to be highly effective against the E. coli isolates tested. When bacteria were cultured anaerobically, at least fourfold increases in the MICs of enoxacin for the strains occurred and no detectable changes in enrofloxacin, sparfloxacin, and ciprofloxacin MICs occurred.

Abstract
We present three cases of occupational allergy caused by the manipulation of food: cheese, chorizo (typical Spanish salami) and salty ham. A IgE-mediated sensitization is demonstrated by skin tests, RAST and positive challenge tests to Acarus siro and Blomia kulagini of the cheese rind, Euroglyphus maynei of the "chorizo" and Tyrophagus putrescentiae of the salty ham.

Abstract
A study has been performed of the prevalence of allergic pathology in the geriatric population attending our department during a period of one year, showing that this type of clinical problem affects 10.4% of our patients 60 years or older. In spite of such considerable prevalence, immunotherapy is not normally used with this age group. This paper describes the results of hyposensitization in 22 of these patients, diagnosed as having extrinsic allergic illness by means of clinical, functional and analytical parameters. We found a significant decrease in cutaneous sensitivity, bronchial hyperreactivity and specific IgE in the patients treated with immunotherapy, as well as a subjective clinical improvement. We feel that immunotherapy can be very effective for the geriatric population, offering the advantages of not requiring self-administration by the older patients and avoiding the secondary effects already described with other kinds of antiallergic medications.

Abstract
Urticaria and angioedema are easily recognized disorders, but in at least 70 percent of individuals, chronic episodes of urticaria are of unknown causes. We present 10 cases of chronic urticaria associated parasitation by blastocystis hominis. This parasite has not been previously related with urticaria. Both intestinal parasitation as well as urticaria responded successfully to paromomycin sulfate.

Abstract
We have amplified, cloned and sequenced the gene encoding the thymidine kinase (TK) of a wild-type strain (Ab4) of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) and two mutants with defective TK activity isolated for resistance to penciclovir (PCV). One of the mutants, PR1, has suffered a 879-bp deletion which reduces the size of TK to 180 bp. The other mutant, PR3, has an adenine to cytosine mutation resulting in a Lys38-->Thr change. This mutation modifies the amino acid sequence of a domain involved in binding ATP, leading to non-detectable enzymatic activity. Lys38 thus appears to be essential for the activity of the TK of EHV-1.

A 17-year old woman suffered progressively worse asthma attacks with hypereosinophilia, patchy lung infiltrates, and acute ischemic lesions of the fingers and purpuric lesions suggesting vasculitis. She developed hypoxemic respiratory failure despite treatment with high-dose corticosteroids. Intravenous cyclophosphamide was introduced with good clinical response, but had to be discontinued because of intolerance. Intravenous immunoglobulins were given in monthly doses for 10 months while the corticosteroid dose was tapered off. This treatment was associated with rapid clinical and biochemical improvement without adverse effects. We conclude that intravenous immunoglobulins is a useful complementary treatment for patients with severe asthma associated with pulmonary vasculitis refractory to corticosteroid therapy alone.

Abstract
The susceptibility of the ovine mammary gland to experimental infection with Staphylococcus aureus subsp anaerobius was studied in five lactating Churra ewes. The left mammary gland of each ewe was inoculated with bacteria while the right halves remained untreated and served as a control. A rapid cellular response was elicited in all inoculated glands. The reaction of inoculated mammary glands varied from that of clinical mastitis (ewes C and D) to subclinical mastitis (ewes B and E) or merely to a transient increase of somatic cell counts (ewe A). S aureus subsp anaerobius is less pathogenic for ewes by the intramammary route than S aureus since doses of about 10(8) bacteria caused clinical mastitis in only two of the inoculated animals.
