Abstract
Carboxylate-assisted Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation constitutes a mild and versatile synthetic tool to efficiently and selectively cleave inert C-H bonds. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to experimentally evaluate both reactivity and selectivity in such systems using mass spectrometry (MS) methods. The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) cations [(NHC)PdX]+, bearing as X- ligand bases commonly used to promote the C-H activation (carboxylates and bicarbonate), are generated in the gas-phase by ESI-MS. Their C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC is then studied using Collision Induced Dissociation (CID) experiments. Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IM)-MS is exploited to identify a number of regioisomers associated with the distinctive site selective C-H activations. It is demonstrated that such C-H activation concomitant with acetic acid release occurs from a mixture of activated [(NHC-H)Pd(CH3CO2H)]+ and non-activated [(NHC)Pd(CH3CO2)]+ complexes. The identity of the X-type ligands (X = Cl-, carboxylates and bicarbonate) has a significant impact on the regioisomer branching ratio upon CID conditions. IM-MS in conjunction with a DFT mechanistic study is presented for the acetate-assisted C-H activation of the [(NHC)Pd(CH3CO2)]+ cation featuring butyl and aryl as N-donor groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Abnormal endotoxin activity in critically ill patients has been described in the absence of Gram-negative bacterial (GNB) infection. As disease severity seems to be crucial in the detection of this phenomenon, we decided to assess and compare endotoxin exposure in those patients representing the critical situation: septic shock and cardiogenic shock. DESIGN Prospective, observational non intervention study. SETTING Critical Care Department of a University tertiary hospital. PATIENTS Cardiogenic shock (CS) and septic shock (SS) patients. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Follow-up was performed for the first three days. Inflammatory biomarkers (C-reactive protein, procalcitonin and interleuquin-6) and IgM antiendotoxin-core antibodies titter (IgM EndoCAb) were daily analyzed. Sixty-two patients were included; twenty-five patients with SS and thirty-seven with CS. Microbial etiology was established in 23 SS patients (92%) and GNB were present in 13 cases (52%). Although infection was suspected and even treated in 30 CS patients (81%), any episode could be finally confirmed. EndoCAb consumption was more intense in SS patients, although twenty-two CS patients (59.5%) had IgM anti-endotoxin value below 10th percentile range for healthy people. No statistically significant difference in endotoxin exposure was detected between Gram-positive and Gram-negative infections in the SS group. Endotoxin exposure ability to distinguish between SS and CS was moderate (AUC 0.7892, 95% IC: 0.6564-0.9218). CONCLUSIONS In the severely ill patient some mechanisms take place allowing endotoxin incursion and therefore blurring the limits of diseases pathophysiology. Our work representatively shows how exposure to endotoxin was not fully capable of distinguishing between CS and SS.

Abstract
The activation of C-H bonds in a selective manner still constitutes a major challenge from a synthetic point of view; thus, it remains an active area of fundamental and applied research. Herein, we introduce ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry-based (IM-MS) approaches to uncover site-selective C-H bond activation in a series of metal complexes of general formula [(NHC)LMCl]+ (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; L = pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*) or p-cymene; M = Pd, Ru, and Ir). The C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC ligand is promoted upon collision induced dissociation (CID). The identification of the resulting [(NHC-H)LM]+ isomers relies on the distinctive topology that such cyclometalated isomers adopt upon site-selective C-H bond activation. Such topological differences can be reliably evidenced as different mobility peaks in their respective CID-IM mass spectra. Alternative isomers are also identified via dehydrogenation at the Cp*/p-cymene (L) ligands to afford [(NHC)(L-H)M]+. The fragmentation of the ion mobility-resolved peaks is also investigated by CID-IM-CID. It enables the assignment of mobility peaks to the specific isomers formed from C(sp2)-H or C(sp3)-H bond activation and distinguishes them from the Cp*/p-cymene (L) dehydrogenation isomers. The conformational change of the NHC ligands upon C-H bond activation, concomitant with cyclometalation, is also discussed on the basis of the estimated collision cross section (CCS). A unique conformation change of the pyrene-tagged NHC members is identified that involves the reorientation of the NHC ring accompanied by a folding of the pyrene moiety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The current official model of training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) in Spain is based on exposure to experiences through clinical rotations. The main objective was to determine the level of competency (I novice to V independent practitioner) achieved by the residents at the end of the 3rd year of training (R3) in ICM through a simulation-based OSCE. Secondary objectives were: (1) To identify gaps in performance, and (2) To investigate the reliability and feasibility of conducting simulation-based assessment at multiple sites. DESIGN Observational multicenter study. SETTING Thirteen Spanish ICU Departments. PARTICIPANTS Thirty six R3. INTERVENTION The participants performed on five, 15-min, high-fidelity crisis scenarios in four simulation centers. The performances were video recorded for later scoring by trained raters. MAIN VARIABLES OF INTEREST Via a Delphi technique, an independent panel of expert intensivists identified critical essential performance elements (CEPE) for each scenario to define the levels of competency. RESULTS A total of 176 performances were analyzed. The internal consistency of the check-lists were adequate (KR-20 range 0.64-0.79). Inter-rater reliability was strong [median Intraclass Correlation Coefficient across scenarios: 0.89 (0.65-0.97)]. Competency levels achieved by R3 were: Level I (18.8%), II (35.2%), III (42.6%), IV/V (3.4%). Overall, a great heterogeneity in performance was observed. CONCLUSION The expected level of competency after one year in the ICU was achieved only in half of the performances. A more evidence-based educational approach is needed. Multiple center simulation-based assessment showed feasibility and reliability as an evaluation method of competency. TRIAL REGISTRATION COBALIDATION. NCT04278976. (https://register. Abstract
In this study we report the preparation of a new mechanically interlocked molecule formed by the self-aggregation of two metallotweezers composed by two pyrene-imidazolylidene gold(I) arms and a pyridine-centered pentacyclic bis-alkynyl linker. The mechanically interlocked nature of this molecule arises from the presence of the bulky tert-butyl groups attached to the sides of the pyrene moieties of the arms of the tweezer, which act as stoppers avoiding the dissociation of the self-aggregated metallotweezer dimer once it is formed. By combining experimental techniques, we were able to confirm the mechanically interlocked nature of this molecule in solution, in the gas phase and in the solid state. The behavior of the tert-butyl substituted tweezer differs greatly form that shown by the tweezer lacking of these bulky groups, whose dimeric structure is in equilibrium with the monomeric structure, therefore not showing any mechanical coercion that avoids the disassembly of the self-aggregated structure.

Abstract
The encapsulation of the tetracationic palladium metallosquare with four pyrene-bis-imidazolylidene ligands [1]4+ with a series of organic molecules was studied by Electrospray ionization Travelling Wave Ion-Mobility Mass Spectrometry (ESI TWIM-MS). The method allowed to determine the Collision Cross Sections (CCSs), which were used to assess the size changes experienced by the host upon encapsulation of the guest molecules. When fullerenes were used as guests, the host is expanded ΔCCS 13 Å2 and 23 Å2 , for C60 or C70 , respectively. The metallorectangle [1]4+ was also used for the encapsulation of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (NTCDI), to form complexes of formula [(NTCDI)2 (PAH)@1]4+ . For these host:guest adducts, the ESI IM-MS studies revealed that [1]4+ is expanded by 47-49 Å2 .. The energy-minimized structures of [1]4+ , [C60 @1]4+ , [C70 @1]4+ , [(NTCDI)2 (corannulene)@1]4+ in the gas phase were obtained by DFT calculations.Introduction.

Abstract
Self-assembly reactions of Na2WO4, SeO2/SeO32-, and [Mo2O2(μ-S)2(H2O)6]2+ give, depending on the pH value, two new large polyoxometalate complexes: i.e., [(γ-Se2W14O52)3(Mo2O2(μ-S)2(H2O)2)6]24- (1) isolated at pH 3.5 and [(γ-Se2W14O52)4(WO3(H2O))8(W2O5)2(W4O12)2(Mo2O2(μ-S)2(H2O)2)4(Mo2O2(μ-S)2(SeO3))4]36- (2) isolated at pH 2. Both compounds were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, EDX, elemental analysis, TGA, and FT-IR and in solution by ESI-MS and NMR.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Levetiracetam is used in the treatment of some forms of epilepsy. In renal impairment and patients on chronic haemodialysis, dose adjustment is required. We report a case. CASE DESCRIPTION This case report describes a woman on levetiracetam treatment who presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizures during a haemodialysis session. We report on treatment adjustment and on the impact of dialysis on levetiracetam levels. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION Haemodialysis reduces serum levetiracetam concentration and can lead to subtherapeutic levels. Close monitoring is necessary when dialysis is used on patients receiving anticonvulsant drugs that are extensively eliminated by the procedure.

Abstract
Reaction of [Nb6O19](8-) with H6TeO6 in water gives telluropentaniobate [(OH)TeNb5O18](6-) (1) as single product, which was isolated as Na(+) and mixed Na(+)/K(+) salts. Crystal structures were determined for Na6[(OH)TeNb5O18]·15H2O (Na6-1) and K6Na[Nb(5.5){Te(OH)}(0.5)O(18.5)]·26H2O (K6Na-1). Formation of 1 was monitored with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and (125)Te NMR techniques. Capillary electrophoresis was used to calculate electrophoretic mobilities and radii of the anionic species in solutions of [(OH)TeNb5O18](6-) and [Nb6O19](8-) in borate buffer. No condensation or degradation products were detected. Reactions of 1 with {Cp*Rh}(2+) sources gives 1:1 and 2:1 hybrid polyoxometalate, which are present in solution as a mixture of isomers, as detected by (125)Te NMR. The isomerism is related to various possibilities of coordination of {Cp*Rh}(2+) to different {M3O3} faces, relative to the unique Te atom. According to ESI-MS experiments in water and methanol, rapid redistribution of the organometallic fragments between the 1:1 and 2:1 complexes takes place. The 1:1 complexes are more stable in water, while 2:1 complexes dominate in methanol. X-ray structural analysis of the crystals isolated from 2:1 reaction mixture allowed identification of Na3[{Cp*Rh}2TeNb5O19]·24H2O (Cp*2Rh2-1) with two {Cp*Rh}(2+) fragments capping the opposing faces of the Lindqvist anion.

Abstract
The complexation of the macrocyclic cavitand cucurbit[7]uril (Q7) with a series of amino acids (AA) with different side chains (Asp, Asn, Gln, Ser, Ala, Val, and Ile) is investigated by ESI-MS techniques. The 1:1 [Q7 + AA + 2H](2+) adducts are observed as the base peak when equimolar Q7:AA solutions are electrosprayed, whereas the 1:2 [Q7 + 2AA + 2H](2+) dications are dominant when an excess of the amino acid is used. A combination of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and DFT calculations of the 1:1 [Q7 + AA + 2H](2+) (AA = Tyr, Val, and Ser) adducts is also reported and proven to be unsuccessful at discriminating between exclusion or inclusion-type conformations in the gas phase. Collision induced dissociation (CID) revealed that the preferred dissociation pathways of the 1:1 [Q7 + AA + 2H](2+) dications are strongly influenced by the identity of the amino acid side chain, whereas ion molecule reactions towards N-butylmethylamine displayed a common reactivity pattern comprising AA displacement. Special emphasis is given on the differences between the gas-phase behavior of the supramolecular adducts with amino acids (AA = Asp, Asn, Gln, Ser, Ala, Val, and Ile) and those featuring basic (Lys and Arg) and aromatic (Tyr and Phe) side chains.

Abstract
Pseudopeptidic molecular cages are appealing receptors since they can display different polar and non-polar interaction sites in a modular framework and a controlled disposition. Inspired by previous host-guest knowledge, two pseudopeptidic molecular cages based on serine and threonine (CySer and CyThr, respectively) were designed and synthesized as hosts for the binding of the four possible stereoisomers of the Ac-Glu-Tyr-OH dipeptide, a target sequence of tyrosine kinases. The careful NMR titration experiments in aqueous acetonitrile allowed the determination of the binding constants and reflected a difference in the stability of the corresponding diastereomeric host-guest complexes. The CySer cage proved to be slightly more efficient than the CyThr counterpart, although both showed similar stereoselectivity trends: LL > DD ≥ LD > DL. This stereoselective binding was retained in the gas phase, as shown by ESI-MS competition experiments using the enantiomer-labelled method (EL), as well as CID experiments. Thus, the MS-determined discriminations follow the same trends observed by NMR, suggesting that the stereoselectivity observed for these systems must be mainly dictated by the polar host-guest interactions. Despite the stereoselective binding of short peptide sequences in competitive media being a challenging issue in supramolecular chemistry, our results demonstrate the power of pseudopeptidic cages in molecular recognition with foreseen implications in chemical biology.

Abstract
A convenient, practical and green N-alkylation of amines has been accomplished by applying readily available carboxylic acids in the presence of molecular hydrogen. Applying an in situ formed ruthenium/triphos complex and an organic acid as cocatalyst, a broad range of alkylated secondary and tertiary amines are obtained in good to excellent yields. This novel method is also successfully applied for the synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted N-methyl/alkyl anilines through a direct three-component coupling reaction of the corresponding amines, carboxylic acids, and CO2 as a C1 source.

Abstract
Tetraannulation of a resorcinarene-octaamino cavitand with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde allows the preparation of a tetrabenzimidazole-resorcinarene cavitand with four ferrocenyl moieties directly linked to the C2 atom of the imidazole units. Oxidation of the four ferrocenyl moieties produces important structural modifications of the molecule, as indicated by DFT calculations performed for the neutral and tetraoxidized forms of the cavitand. By means of (1) H NMR spectroscopic analysis, the encapsulating properties of the new tetraferrocenyl-resorcinarene cavitand toward a series of ammonium salts were evaluated, and a clear cutoff point in binding affinity with respect to size was observed. Cyclic voltammetric studies allowed us to estimate the relative association constants for the neutral and oxidized forms of the cavitand, thus indicating that the guest was bound to the neutral (reduced) state of the cavitand and was released from the oxidized form. These redox-addressable conformational and binding properties of the resorcinarene-tetraferrocenyl cavitand constitute all the necessary features of a redox-switchable molecular gripper. By means of mass-spectrometric analysis, we could unambiguously confirm the molar stoichiometry of the host-guest complex (1:1) and assess the strong guest encapsulation, as indicated by triggering the covalent coupling between host and guest in the gas phase.

Abstract
OsHCl(CO)[κ(3)-PyCH2NHC2H4NHPtBu2] is the first efficient catalyst for chemoselective reduction of challenging unsaturated esters to enols and for acceptorless coupling of amines with MeOH and EtOH affording formamides and acetamides. The NMR, ESI-MS, and DFT data indicate a mechanism proceeding in the metal coordination sphere and producing no free organic intermediates.

Abstract
A study, involving kinetic measurements on the stopped-flow and conventional UV/Vis timescales, ESI-MS, NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, has been carried out to understand the mechanism of the reaction of [Mo3 S4 (acac)3 (py)3 ][PF6 ] ([1]PF6 ; acac=acetylacetonate, py=pyridine) with two RCCR alkynes (R=CH2 OH (btd), COOH (adc)) in CH3 CN. Both reactions show polyphasic kinetics, but experimental and computational data indicate that alkyne activation occurs in a single kinetic step through a concerted mechanism similar to that of organic [3+2] cycloaddition reactions, in this case through the interaction with one Mo(μ-S)2 moiety of [1](+) . The rate of this step is three orders of magnitude faster for adc than that for btd, and the products initially formed evolve in subsequent steps into compounds that result from substitution of py ligands or from reorganization to give species with different structures. Activation strain analysis of the [3+2] cycloaddition step reveals that the deformation of the two reactants has a small contribution to the difference in the computed activation barriers, which is mainly associated with the change in the extent of their interaction at the transition-state structures. Subsequent frontier molecular orbital analysis shows that the carboxylic acid substituents on adc stabilize its HOMO and LUMO orbitals with respect to those on btd due to better electron-withdrawing properties. As a result, the frontier molecular orbitals of the cluster and alkyne become closer in energy; this allows a stronger interaction.

Abstract
New triangular Mo(IV) and W(IV) incomplete cuboidal cluster complexes containing three η(2)-diethyldithiophosphates (dtp, one per metal centre) and a η(2)(μ)-AcO or η(2)(μ)-dtp ligand bridging two of these centres have been prepared as mono-substituted derivatives and characterized by the usual techniques plus single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in some cases. In the compounds, the single substitutionally available unlocked position is coordinated to different N-donor ligands (1,2-bis(pyridyl)ethylene, pyrimidine, pyrazine) or to the residual solvent. The compounds are very labile and the N-donor ligands are only weakly coordinated, being easily substituted by other donors or coordinating solvents such as acetonitrile. This lability has been explored kinetico-mechanistically by stopped-flow techniques at varying temperatures for the compound [Mo3S4(η(2)-dtp)3(η(2)(μ)-dtp)(H2O)]. By doing so, the nature of the activation process leading to substitution reactions on these complexes has been established as associatively activated and dominated by a very low formation equilibrium constant, that is, by the substitution of the incoming N-donor ligand. Furthermore, the existence of a non-dissociatively activated trigonal 60° fluxional twist has also been established for the η(2)-dtp ligand on the single unlocked position. The lability of the system has also enabled the association in dimers of the acetato derivative, i.e. [Mo3S4(η(2)-dtp)3(η(2)(μ)-AcO)(H2O)], via a pyrazine bridging ligand. After a very careful tuning of the reaction conditions, as established from the kinetico-mechanistic studies, the first single-bridged unsupported dimeric association of {Mo3S4} units, i.e. [{Mo3S4(η(2)-dtp)3(η(2)(μ)-AcO)}2(μ-pyrazine)], has been structurally characterised.
