Abstract
Sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) is the main chemical component in several lubricant products used for soil conditioning in the mechanized excavation industry using Earth Pressure Balance-Tunnel Boring Machines. During the tunnelling process, huge amounts of excavated soil are produced and the SLES presence can affect the subsequent re-use of this material as a by-product. Currently, there is still no regulatory indication of reliable and sensitive bioassays for monitoring soil quality during the excavation process. The main objective of this work was to verify if the Vibrio fischeri screening test was suitable as a consistent and precautionary tool for this specific purpose. Firstly, the ecotoxicity (EC20 and EC50) of the SLES standard solution and three commercial products (SLES content from 10 to 50%) were evaluated to select the most environmental friendly product. Subsequently, soil samples from about 2 years of tunnelling in a real construction site, conditioned with the selected product, were evaluated for their environmental compatibility with the prescriptions of an Italian site-specific protocol. The latter established 2 mg/L as a threshold value for SLES concentration in soil water extracts and a no toxic response (≤20%) for the Vibrio fischeri test. The comparison of the bacterium bioluminescence inhibition values (%) with analytical determinations showed an ecotoxicity when SLES was >2 mg/L. The toxicity was directly related to SLES concentration, indicating that the V. fischeri test and the SLES analyses are suitable tools for assessing excavated soil as a by-product, ensuring its safe reuse in accordance with a green production process (circular economy).

Abstract
58 cases of double malignancies of uterus and breast observed in 1048 breast cancers and 941 uterine cancers are reported. 46 cases were of double breast cancer, the second arising within a year of the first in 21 cases and later in the other 25. The interest of these findings lies in the incidence and chronological distribution of the two lesions and the long interval between the onset of the two malignancies and the increased risk of metastases. Double malignancies affecting breast and uterus are much rarer: 8 cases in which the breast was affected first, only 1 of which metastasised, and 4 cases in which the uterus was affected first, of which as many as 3 metastasised. The occurrence of these combinations does not seem to be related, or at any rate non consistently, either with age, marital status or treatment, roentgen castration in particular.

Abstract
The leukemic cells circulating in the peripheral blood and invading the skin of a patient with type M5 myelomonocytic leukemia were compared using ultrastructural, cytochemical and immunological criteria. Neoplastic cells exhibited more differentiated morphologic features in the skin than in peripheral blood, resembling tissue macrophages. The cytochemical pattern did not show any appreciable difference, whereas the surface antigenic profile was dissimilar. Most circulating leukemic cells were Leu M1+ and Leu M3+, and the percentage of OKM1+ and OKIa-1+ cells varied in two different blood samples examined. Conversely, OKIa-1 monoclonal antibody stained viritually all the leukemic cells infiltrating the skin in the absence of any appreciable reactivity with the other monoclonal antibodies. The phenotype of the malignant cells in the skin did not vary during the clinical course of the disease. These observations suggest that the cutaneous microenvironment is able to induce leukemic cells to mutate their phenotypic features towards a more mature state, or that only relatively differentiated circulating leukemic cells are able to leave the bloodstream and colonize the skin.

Abstract
The follow-up data on 39 cases of stage I malignant melanoma treated with CO2 laser are compared to those of an analogous group of cases treated by traditional surgical methods and selected for their clinical and pathologic similarities with the laser-treated group. The findings were expressed in terms of tumor-free time and were evaluated by variance analysis. The data showed that traditional methods gave better results. CO2 laser surgery requires longer healing time, which may have a negative effect on the course of the disease.

Abstract
The increasing worldwide consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products such as ibuprofen (IBU) is leading to the widespread and persistent occurrence of these chemicals and their transformation products in soils and waters. Although at low concentrations, the continuous discharge of these micropollutants and the incomplete removal by the actual wastewater treatments can provoke accumulation in the environment with risks for the trophic chain. Non-target organisms as duckweed can be used for the environmental monitoring of pharmaceutical emerging contaminants. In this work, plants of Lemna gibba L. were exposed to high (0.20 and 1mgL-1) and environmentally relevant (0.02mgL-1) concentrations of IBU to investigate their removal and metabolization capacity. The main oxidized IBU metabolites in humans (hydroxy-IBU and carboxy-IBU) were determined in the intact plants and in the growth solutions, together with non-destructive physiological parameters and phytotoxic indicators. The IBU uptake increased with the increasing of IBU concentration in the medium, but the relative accumulation of the pharmaceutical and generation of hydroxy-IBU was higher in presence of the lower IBU treatments. Carboxy-IBU was not found in the plant tissue and solutions. The changes observed in growth and photosynthetic performances were not able to induce phyto-toxic effects. Apart from a mean physical-chemical degradation of 8.2%, the IBU removal by plants was highly efficient (89-92.5%) in all the conditions tested, highlighting the role of L. gibba in the biodegradation of emerging contaminants.

Abstract
Zn(II) and Cd(II) removal by biosorption using Undaria pinnatifida was studied in batch and dynamic systems. The kinetic uptake follows a pseudo second order rate equation indicating that the rate limiting step is a chemical reaction. The equilibrium data are described by the Langmuir isotherm in mono-component solutions. In binary solutions, the Jain and Snowyink model shows that most of the active sites are exclusively accessible to cadmium ions without competition with the zinc ions. The dynamic studies show that the biosorbent has higher retention and affinity for Cd(II) than for Zn(II) in both mono- and bi-component systems. SEM-EDX analysis indicates that the active sites are heterogeneously distributed on the cell wall surface. FT-IR spectrometry characterization shows that carboxylic groups and chemical groups containing N and S contribute to Zn(II) and Cd(II) uptake by U. pinnatifida. According to these results calcium-treated U. pinnatifida is a suitable adsorbent for Zn(II) and Cd(II) pollutants.

Abstract
The organochlorine pesticide γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH, lindane) and its non-insecticidal isomers α-, β-, and δ- continue to pose serious environmental and health concerns, although their use has been restricted or completely banned for decades. The present study reports the first results on the ability of two Arthrobacter strains, not directly isolated from a HCH-polluted site, to grow in a mineral salt medium containing α-, β-, or γ-HCH (100 mgl(-1)) as sole source of carbon. Growth of cultures and HCHs degradation by Arthrobacter fluorescens and Arthrobacter giacomelloi were investigated after 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 days of incubation by enumerating colony forming units and GC with ECD detection, respectively. Both bacteria are able to metabolize the HCHs: A. giacomelloi is the most effective one, as after 72 h of incubation it produces 88 % degradation of α-, 60 % of β-, and 56 % of γ-HCH. The formation of possible persistent compounds was studied by GC/MS and by HPLC analysis. Pentachlorocyclohexenes and tetrachlorocyclohexenes have been detected as metabolites, which are almost completely eliminated after 72 h of incubation, while no phenolic compounds were found.

Abstract
Zinc and cadmium can be efficiently removed from solutions using the brown algae, Macrocystis pyrifera. Treatment with CaCl(2) allowed stabilization of the biosorbent. The maximum biosorption capacities in mono-component systems were 0.91 mmol g(-1) and 0.89 mmol g(-1) and the Langmuir affinity coefficients were 1.76 L mmol(-1) and 1.25 L mmol(-1) for Zn(II) and Cd(II), respectively. In two-component systems, Zn(II) and Cd(II) adsorption capacities were reduced by 50% and 40%, respectively and the biosorbent showed a preference for Cd(II) over Zn(II). HNO(3) (0.1M) and EDTA (0.1M) achieved 90-100% desorption of both ions from the loaded biomass. While HNO(3) preserved the biomass structure, EDTA destroyed it completely. Fourier transform infrared spectra identified the contribution of carboxylic, amine and sulfonate groups on Zn(II) and Cd(II) biosorption. These results showed that biosorption using M. pyrifera-treated biomass could be an affordable and simple process for cadmium and zinc removal from wastewaters.

Abstract
Two acidic hot springs close to the crater of Copahue Volcano (Neuquén, Argentina) are the source of the Río Agrio. The river runs several kilometres before flowing into Caviahue Lake. Along the river, temperature, iron, other metal and proton concentrations decrease gradually with distance downstream. From the source to the lake and depending on the season, pH can rise from 1.0 (or even less) to about 4.0, while temperature values decrease from 70°C to 15°C. Water samples were taken from different stations on the river selected according to their physicochemical parameters. In order to assess prokaryotic biodiversity throughout the water column, different and complementary molecular biology techniques were used, mainly in situ hybridisation and 16S rRNA gene cloning and sequencing. All microorganisms found are typical of acidic environments. Sulphur-oxidizing bacteria like Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus albertensis were detected in every station. Moderately thermophile iron- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria like members of Alicyclobacillus and Sulfobacillus genera were also ubiquitous. Strict iron-oxidizing bacteria like Leptospirillum and Ferrimicrobium were present at the source of the river, but disappeared downstream where iron concentrations were much lower. Iron-oxidizing, mesophilic Ferroplasma spp. were the main archaea found. The data presented in this work represent the first molecular assessment of this rare natural acidic environment.

Abstract
A bioremediation system for creosote-treated wood is proposed, based on the detoxifying capability of Pleurotus ostreatus, a ligninolythic fungus. Non-sterilized chipped contaminated wood was mixed at various ratios with wheat straw on which Pleurotus mycelia was grown. At 1:2 initial ratio contaminated wood:wheat straw, chemical analyses demonstrated an almost complete degradation of creosote oil components after 44 days, also confirmed by a significant reduction of ecotoxicity. Lower ratios, i.e. higher amount of contaminated wood, lower system efficiency, although a better creosote degradation was obtained by a stepped up wood addition.

Abstract
Tolerance of wood decay fungi of the genera Agrocybe, Armillaria, Auricularia, Daedalea, Pleurotus, Trametes to the presence of various amounts of creosote-treated wood (CTW) in the growth medium was compared. In the case of the most tolerant strain, Pleurotus ostreatus SMR 684, extracellular laccase and peroxidase specific activities were monitored during growth in the presence of CTW. Degradation of various creosote-constituting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by this strain was evaluated by GC-MS and the ecotoxicity of treated and untreated CTW was compared by Microtox test.

Abstract
Integrated biological processes involving the dissolution and subsequent precipitation have been used for the treatment of the spent material from the hydrogenation of vegetable oil containing a high-level of nickel. Our results show that nickel was successfully leached using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans. The percentages of nickel leached using A. thiooxidans were higher than those obtained with dilute sulphuric acid solutions. Due to the physical characteristics of the residue, the best results were obtained when the leaching process was carried out using sulphuric acid biogenerated by an A. thiooxidans biofilm. The recovery of nickel from the leachates was performed at room temperature by precipitating with sulphide generated by Desulfovibrio cells. Indirect precipitation using sulphide generated in Desulfovibrio sp. cultures allowed the recovery of nickel as the very insoluble nickel sulphide.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the effect of prolonged consumption of a synbiotic milk (Synbiotic) containing Lactobacillus acidophilus (strain 74-2, 10(7) CFU ml(-1)), Bifidobacterium lactis (strain 420, 10(7) CFU ml(-1)) and 2% inulin on colonic ecosystem in healthy humans. METHODS AND RESULTS A group of 26 healthy subjects, aged 22-47 years, participated in a 6-week placebo-controlled dietary intervention study. After a 2-week baseline period, in which all volunteers consumed 500 ml day(-1) of 2% skimmed milk (Placebo), the study was designed as a randomized, double-blind, two-armed parallel study in which 4-week consumption of 500 ml day portions of Synbiotic or Placebo were compared. Faecal microbial counts, pH, l-lactic acid and bile acid concentrations were assessed before and after the intervention. Synbiotic consumption significantly decreased faecal dry weight (P < 0.01) and l-lactic acid (P < 0.05) concentration, while significantly increased faecal bifidobacteria (P < 0.05) and lactobacilli (P < 0.01) counts. CONCLUSION The tested synbiotic milk showed its synbiotic nature by enhancing the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Scientific support to functional effect of a synbiotic milk.

Abstract
In this paper, we report the chromium(VI) reduction by filtrates of Acidithiobacillus and Thiobacillus cultures. Chromium(VI) reduction by filtrates of A. ferrooxidans cultures under acidic conditions was higher than that observed for A. thiooxidans. However, at pH close to 7, chromium(VI) reduction by filtrates of T. thioparus cultures was as high as that by filtrates of A. thiooxidans cultures and much higher than that observed for A. ferrooxidans cultures at the same pH. The capability of these cultures to reduce chromium(VI) was associated specifically with the fraction of cultures (cells, sulphur and associated sulphur compounds) retained by filtration through a 0.45mum filter. In the fraction that comes from A. thiooxidans culture, polythionates (S(x)O(6)(2-)) with 3-7 sulphur atoms were detected and identified (by HPLC with MS as detector). The model of vesicles containing polythionates, sulphur and water agrees with our results.

Abstract
The rate of iron (II) oxidation by sulphur-grown Thiobacillus ferrooxidans cells decreased when the pH of the original growth medium was lowered. This behaviour was observed even after shifting from the original growth pH to a higher pH. After being suspended in medium at a pH higher than the growth pH, sulphur-grown cells could leach covellite at a similar initial rate to iron-grown cells. Sulphur-grown cells exhibited a long lag phase when the original growth pH was low. These results were correlated with the number of protons associated with the cell surface, rather than with cell hydrophobicity or cell capacity to attach to solid particles. Sulphur-grown cells grown in very acidic media (without pH control) were not able to oxidize iron (II) or leach covellite even after shifting to a high pH.

Abstract
Diltiazem (DTZ) is an optically active calcium channel blocker having a benzodiazepine structure. The drug used in therapy is (+)-cis-diltiazem with configuration (2S,3S). To describe the analytical profile of DTZ different stationary phases (RP-18, RP-8, monolithic support) were tested. The best separation of DTZ from A, B, E and F was obtained using as stationary phase a RP-8 or a monolithic RP-18. The characterization of impurities was carried out using two analytical systems, HPLC and HPLC/MS.

Abstract
The lipophilicity of some cardiovascular drugs was determined by capillary electrophoresis (CE). Mexiletine, amlodipine and indapamide, the drugs considered, were in contact with liposomial vescicles for 2, 4 or 6 h. After the contact time the drugs, penetrated into liposomial vesicles, were determined by CE using phosphate buffer (pH 6.3 or 7.4) or borate buffer (pH 9). The lipophilicity of three drugs was determined considering the drug percentage penetrated into liposomial vesicles. The found lipohilicity order was amlodipine > mexiletine > indapamide.

Abstract
The lipophilicity of pipemidic, nalidixic and oxolinic acids was determined by forming phospholipidic micelles directly in an electrophoretic capillary. Phosphatidylcholine derivatives, namely L-alpha-dilauroyl phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) or L-alpha-dimiristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC), were added in the run buffer (50 mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.4). To obtain a mixed micelle, phospholipidic derivatives and sodium cholate were together added in the run buffer. Considering the increasing of migration time when phosphatidylcholine derivative is added in the run buffer, Ks can be determined and then quinolones lipophilicity.

Abstract
Midodrine hydrochloride is a peripheral alpha(1)-adrenoreceptor agonist that induces venous and arterial vasoconstriction. Midodrine, after oral or intravenous administration, undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis and releases deglymidodrine, a pharmacologically active metabolite. Midodrine and deglymidodrine have a chiral carbon in the 2-position. To investigate the bioactivity of racemates and enantiomers of the drug and metabolite, three chromatographic chiral stationary phases, Chiralcel OD-H, Chiralcel OD-R, and alpha(1)-AGP, were evaluated for enantiomeric resolution. Good enantioseparation of midodrine racemate was obtained using the Chiralcel OD-H column. This stationary phase was then used to collect separately the midodrine enantiomers. By alkaline hydrolysis of rac-midodrine and each separated enantiomer, rac-deglymidodrine and its enantiomers were prepared. The control of the enantiomeric purity was carried out by alpha(1)-AGP stationary phase, while the hydrolysis of rac-midodrine and its enantiomers was controlled by capillary electrophoresis using trimethyl-beta-cyclodextrin as chiral selector. The pharmacological activity of the two racemates and the two enantiomeric pairs was tested in vitro on a strip of rabbit descending thoracic aorta. The tests continued that the activity of the drug and metabolite is due only to the (-)-enantiomer because neither of the (+)-enantiomers is active.

Abstract
Pethidine, predominantly a mu-receptor agonist, is a phenyl-piperidinic synthetic drug. It is used in the management of moderate to several pain. A possible hydrolytic degradation of an ester group can generate a very toxic compound, the N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6 tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) which contaminates the drug. Because of the toxicity of MPTP a suitable method for its determination must be selective and sensitive. Afterwards we propose simple methods to determine pethidine and MPTP by capillary electrophoresis (CE), MECK and RP-high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) looking at the limit of detection obtained using these three techniques. CE was carried out using as running buffer ammonium acetate (pH 8.3). MECK was performed with a borate buffer (pH 8.3) containing sodium dodecylsulphate and trimethyl-beta-cyclodextrins. RP-HPLC was carried out on a RP18 stationary phase, using as mobile phase a mixture of phosphate buffer (pH 7) containing acetonitrile and 1% of diethylamine.

Abstract
The quality control of drugs is generally made by HPLC. This control could be made also by capillary electrochromatography (CEC). In this paper we report the analysis by CEC of ibuprofen, a well-known anti-inflammatory non steroidic drug, and some of its impurities. The analyses were performed in a 100-microm inner diameter (I.D.) fused silica capillary, packed with RP-18 stationary phase. The mobile phase was a mixture of 100 mM formic acid solution (pH 2.5), water and acetonitrile (ACN). The ACN percentage in the mobile phase and the applied voltage were carefully studied to well resolve the drug from each impurity. The results, obtained determining ibuprofen and related compounds by CEC, showed the selectivity and efficiency of the method.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of nasopharyngeal carriers of Neisseria meningitidis and Haemophilus influenzae, and to evaluate their chemoresistance. N. meningitidis was more frequently isolated in adolescents (10-15 years). All of meningococci were susceptible to ceftriaxone and rifampin, only one isolate showed reduced susceptibility to chloramphenicol and four strains showed reduced penicillin susceptibility. The results show that these drugs are still effective for prophylaxis and treatment in our area. All strains of H. influenzae were susceptible to penicillin, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, rifampin, azithromicin and gentamicin. 6 nontypeable strains were resistant to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, 7 strains of type a and c-f, and 3 non-typeable strains showed reduced susceptibility to tetracycline. In contrast with the current trend in the world, in our area the susceptibility of H. influenzae to betalactams was 100%, therefore these antibiotics are still the drugs of choice for treatment of invasive diseases.

Abstract
Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) and Capillary Electrochromatography (CEC) have been used to determine losartan and hydrochlorothiazide. The CE separation was carried out in an uncoated capillary filled with a 100 mM sodium borate pH 9 solution containing trimethyl-beta-cyclodextrins. CEC was performed using a capillary packed with a RP-18 stationary phase. The mobile phase was a mixture of 50 mM ammonium acetate pH 7, water, acetonitrile (1/1.5/7.5). By CE and CEC suitable methods to determine simultaneously losartan and hydrochlorothiazide in working standard mixture or pharmaceutical form were obtained. The proposed methods are very simple and both gave accurate and precise results.

Abstract
Fenticonazole is a chiral antifungal agent, used in therapy as the racemic mixture. The investigation on the chirality of fenticonazole is reported in this study. rac-Fenticonazole was resolved by HPLC and by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The chiral stationary phase (CSP), used in HPLC, was Daicel OD-H, a commercial phase, which allowed the separate collection of the two enantiomers. The chiral selectors used for CE were some cyclodextrin derivatives. The analysis time required from CE was about the half the HPLC enantioseparation time. The biological activity of the rac-mixture and each individual enantiomer was tested against Cryptococcus neoformans and two Aspergillus nidulans strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) evaluation showed that the eutomer was the enantiomer chromatographically more retained and had a longer migration time in the electrophoretic enantioseparation. The CD spectrum of the eutomer showed a positive Cotton effect.

Abstract
Spinal dysraphisms are diagnosed more frequently at birth or in infancy. We report a spinal malformation compatible with lipomyeloschisis in an elderly patient presenting with symptoms and signs of myelopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intraspinal mass continuous with a subcutaneous lipoma. Three-dimensional computed tomography reconstructions better showed the spinal dysraphism; dermal sinus was also evident. Neuroimaging can define the precise diagnosis also in elderly patients presenting with myelopathy and can provide valuable structural details.

Abstract
In periprosthesis tissues, Staphylococcus epidermidis produces extracellular polysaccharide slime. Recently it has been shown that S. aureus also produces slime and that both S. epidermidis and S. aureus contain the ica operon responsible for slime production. In the operon, icaA encodes for N-acetylglutaminyltransferase, the enzyme for polysaccharide synthesis. However, co-expression of icaA and icaD is required for full slime synthesis. The slime-producing strains of both S. epidermidis and S. aureus are more virulent and are responsible for severe postsurgical or periprosthesis infections. The authors describe a simple, rapid, and reliable polymerase chain reaction method to detect icaA and icaD. The method was applied to the detection of ica genes on two reference strains, 15 strains each of S. epidermidis and S. aureus from periprosthesis infections and 10 strains from the skin and mucosa of healthy volunteers. icaA and icaD were detectable only in slime-producing strains (tested for slime production on Congo Red agar), and never in nonslime-producing ones. This method is a straightforward way of detecting the slime-producing ability by S. epidermidis and S. aureus. In clinical specimens this polymerase chain reaction method enables rapid diagnosis of virulent slime-producing strains with respect to the traditional culture method on Congo Red agar, which requires much more time. Rapid identification of the virulent properties of the bacterial strain responsible for a staphylococcal infection is crucial for deciding treatment.

Abstract
During the last few years the direct diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii infection has taken advantage of PCR. The present work tested the sensitivity and specificity of PCR for rDNA and p30 genes. Using ascitic fluid from infected mice rDNA PCR detected 0.5 tachyzoite/ml, while nested p30 PCR 1 tachyzoite/ml. The rDNA amplification was positive in all clinical samples from a single immuno compromised patient (blood, urine and bronchoalveolar fluid). In the same patient nested p30 PCR was positive only in urine and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. The rDNA and p30 amplicons were never found in any amniotic fluids tested. These results could prove the usefulness of rDNA amplification to detect T. gondii in blood.

Abstract
We performed transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex in 22 left-handed and 25 right-handed subjects during active contraction of a small hand muscle. Motor evoked potentials had the same latency, amplitude and threshold on both sides of the body, whilst the silent period duration was shorter in the dominant hand. Silent periods elicited by nerve and brainstem stimulation were the same in both hands. Since the latter part of the cortical silent period is due mainly to withdrawal of corticospinal input to spinal motoneurones, we speculate that the results are compatible with the suggestion that tonic contractions of the non-dominant hand are associated with a greater involvement of the corticospinal tract than those of the dominant hand. It also seems likely that there is an asymmetry in the excitability of cortical inhibitory mechanisms with those responsible for the cortical silent period being less excitable in the dominant motor cortex.

Abstract
Clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis are frequently referred to produce a biofilm, known as slime, involved in adherence to medical devices and in resistance to host defences. A high frequency of slime producing Staphylococcus aureus strains was never reported, at least in the case of human isolates. In the present study the production of slime by clinical isolates of S. aureus and S. epidermidis from catheter associated infections and from post-surgical infections was studied by a sensitive method based on culturing the isolates on Congo red agar. The study demonstrates that in nosocomial surgical infections, considered separately from catheter-associated infections, S. aureus emerges as a more prevalent etiologic agent than S. epidermidis, with a proportion of slime producing strains markedly high.

Abstract
Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a rare condition characterized by deposition of haemosiderin in the leptomeninges and in the subpial layers of the brain and spinal cord. With the widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging, an increasing number of cases of superficial siderosis are being discovered, secondary forms being more frequent than idiopathic ones. We report a 78-year-old man in oral anticoagulant therapy, who presented neurosensory hearing loss, gait ataxia and spastic paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested the diagnosis of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system, without an evident bleeding source.

Abstract
Silybine (SBN), isosilybine (ISBN), silycristine (SCN), silydianine (SDN), and taxifoline (TXF) are the main active flavanoids, generally found in the dried fruits of silybum marianum. The concentrations of these compounds, excepted TXF, are all together usually expressed as silymarine content. In this paper the determination of the silymarine titre was made by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and high performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE). Two reversed stationary phases, RP-18 and RP-8, were observed comparing the resolutions of all considered flavanoids with each stationary phases. The HPCE was carried out considering the possible improvement in the resolution of SBN, CN, SDN and TXF using, 8-cyclodextrines or organic modifier. The qualitative and quantitative data obtained by HPLC and HPCE were compared.

Abstract
In this study, the production of sulphuric acid in bioreactors with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans attached on elemental sulphur was investigated. These bioreactors reached a maximum H+ productivity of 80 mmol kg-1 d-1 of support. This medium was used for the indirect dissolution of spent nickel-cadmium batteries recovering after 93 days 100% of cadmium, 96.5% of nickel and 95.0% of iron. Moreover, recoveries higher than 90.0% were reached when anodic and cathodic materials were directly added to Thiobacillus ferrooxidans cultures with sulphur as the sole energy source. The results presented show an economic and effective method which could be considered the first step to recycle spent and and discarded batteries preventing one of the many problems of environmental pollution.

Abstract
We have previously reported that limbic seizures regulate the gene expression of fibroblast growth factor-2 (basic, FGF-2) according to a specific spatio-temporal pattern. In the present paper we have investigated the role of adrenal hormones on seizure-induced elevation of fibroblast growth factor-1 (acidic, FGF-1) and FGF-2 gene expression. Adrenalectomy reduces FGF-2 mRNA expression in specific brain regions, such as frontal cortex, hippocampus and striatum, whereas FGF-1 mRNA levels were decreased only in the frontal cortex. The injection of kainic acid in adrenalectomized rats produced a widespread increase of FGF-2 mRNA with a pattern similar to sham animals as indicated by in situ hybridization. In contrast, although kainate-induced elevation of FGF-1 mRNA in the hippocampus was not influenced by adrenalectomy, its induction in frontal cortex was prevented by this surgery procedure. Taken together, these data indicate that adrenal hormones play a role in the regulation of the gene expression for fibroblast growth factors, but different mechanisms are operative in their induction following seizure activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE A radiological procedure, based on straightforward conventional methods, was used for a demonstration of pelvic anatomy during simulation to precisely delineate the target volume and increase the probabilities of pelvic tumor control. METHODS AND MATERIALS Between 1990 and 1993, 450 patients with primary pelvic malignancies underwent external radiotherapy by means of photons, 6-10 MeV, with multiple-field techniques. The simulation was carried out immediately following a pelvic organs opacification (POO) by standard methods. This procedure used a minimal quantity of contrast media (barium sulphate, iodine contrast) and metallic markers to locate directly and simultaneously: (a) small intestine, (b) bladder, (c) rectum, (d) anal canal, (e) bulbous male urethra, and (f) vagina. When all these structures were clearly visualized, the procedure was scored as successfully performed. RESULTS The sensitivity of procedure was defined as the percentage of successful pelvic organs opacification (POO) carried out in the patients. It was 98% in both women and men. Indirectly, the procedure helped us to locate the prostate, the perineum, and the uterus cervix in the same percentage of patients. Pelvic organs opacification allowed us to document not only the normal position of the pelvic organs tested, but also any variations (ranging from 5% to 40% of cases, after pelvic surgery). Furthermore, POO revealed previously not-reported abnormalities in patients undergoing surgery, mostly rectal stenosis, urinary or anal incontinence, and bladder luxation. The cost of the materials used was $10-15 for each POO, and the time required 5-7 min. The side effects were 7% and not significant. CONCLUSION In the simulation phase for multiple-field irradiation technique, the simultaneous visualization of pelvic organs obtained by POO procedure allows an exact positioning of the isocenter, an accurate shielding of structures, and finally, a reliable conformal therapy. Due to the low cost, the short length, and the insignificant side effects, POO can be carried out more than once during pelvic treatments for localization and verification of target.

Abstract
We investigated whether the severity of convulsions evoked by kainic acid and pilocarpine is modified in nitric oxide synthase inhibitor-treated rats. We found that chronic treatment (4 days) with NW-nitro-L-arginine greatly potentiates seizures induced by both convulsants suggesting a potential role for nitric oxide in mechanisms regulating seizure induction and propagation.

Abstract
Both RNase protection assay and in situ hybridization were used to investigate the effect of intraperitoneal injection of kainate on the messenger RNA levels for basic fibroblast growth factor in the rat central nervous system. Limbic motor seizures were produced by kainate injection and this event was followed by a significant elevation of basic fibroblast growth factor gene expression in rat hippocampus and striatum 6 h after the convulsant injection. The increase in hippocampus was maximal at 24 h and it was delayed with respect to nerve growth factor induction, which peaked 3 h after kainate injection. Animals that suffered prolonged seizure activity also showed a significant elevation of basic fibroblast growth factor gene expression four and 14 days after kainate, when no changes in nerve growth factor gene expression were observed. We show that, within the hippocampus, the increase of basic fibroblast growth factor messenger RNA was localized in dentate gyrus and the CA1 layer 6 and 24 h after kainate injection. Long-term effects on its gene expression were measurable only in the CA1 hippocampal subfield, where major cell damage and astrocytosis have been reported to occur following kainate-induced seizure activity [Ben-Ari Y. et al. (1981) Neuroscience 7, 1361-1391; Lothman E. W. and Collins R. C. (1981) Brain Res. 218, 299-318; Schwob J. E. et al. (1980) Neuroscience 5, 991-1014]. Indeed, the animals which displayed elevated messenger RNA levels for basic fibroblast growth factor four and 14 days after kainate injection showed a marked induction of messenger RNA expression for the astroglial marker glial fibrillary acidic protein. These results indicate that the glutamate analogue kainate produces short- and long-term increases of basic fibroblast growth factor messenger RNA expression with a specific anatomical pattern. Therefore, the gene expression for this neurotrophic factor is probably regulated by neuronal activity at early points in time, whereas the induction observed at later time points is related to adaptive mechanisms taking place following kainate-induced neuronal degeneration.
