Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important and controversial role in carcinogenesis. Microsomal redox chains containing NADH- and NADPH-dependent oxidoreductases are among the main sites of intracellular ROS synthesis, but their role in the oxidative balance has not been fully studied. Here, we studied the activity of cytochrome b5 reductase (CYB5R) and cytochrome P450 reductase (CYPOR) in ovarian cancer tissues and cells isolated from peritoneal fluid, along with the antioxidant capacity of peritoneal fluid. We used the developed a chemiluminescence assay based on stimulation with NADH and NADPH, which reflects the activity of CYB5R and CYPOR, respectively. The activity of CYB5R and CYPOR was significantly higher in moderately and poorly differentiated ovarian adenocarcinomas compared with well-differentiated adenocarcinomas and cystadenomas. For the chemotherapy-resistant tumors, the activity of tissue CYB5R and CYPOR was lower compared to the non-resistant tumors. In the peritoneal fluid, the antioxidant capacity significantly increased in this series, benign tumors < well-differentiated < moderately and poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas, so the antioxidant excess was observed for moderately and poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. The antioxidant capacity of peritoneal fluid and the activity of CYB5R and CYPOR of cells isolated from peritoneal fluid were characterized by a direct moderate correlation for moderately and poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. These results indicate the significant role of NAD(P)H oxidoreductases and the antioxidant potential of peritoneal fluid in cancer biochemistry. The parameters studied are useful for diagnostics and prognostics. The developed assay can be used to analyze CYB5R and CYPOR activity in other tissues and cells.

Abstract
The study of salivary microelements and their neurophysiological and behavioral correlates in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a pressing issue in modern psychiatry, which, however, lacks adequate research at this time. In this study, we tested the dynamics of behavioral parameters, resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG), and salivary iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, and zinc in 30 healthy volunteers and 30 individuals with OCD before and after an emotional antisaccade task. The eye-movement data served as a measure of behavioral performance. Our research revealed consistently higher manganese concentrations in the OCD group compared to healthy volunteers associated with a higher EEG ratio of amplitude transformation and symptom severity. The dynamics of salivary microelements and resting-state EEG, possibly influenced by cognitive and emotional load during the anticsaccade task, differed between groups. In healthy volunteers, there was a decrease in salivary iron level with an increase in high-frequency power spectral density of EEG. The OCD group showed a decrease in salivary copper with an increased Hjorth mobility of EEG.

Abstract
We studied the molecular mechanisms of cross-adaptation to ionizing radiation (1 Gy) of lymphocytes isolated from rats subjected to emotional stress. The effects of chronic (CES; various types of stress exposure) and acute (AES; forced swimming) emotional stress in rats on indicators of oxidative stress, cell death, and levels of NRF2 and NOX4 proteins involved in the development of the adaptive response were analyzed in isolated lymphocytes. It was found that stress induced an adaptive response in rat lymphocytes and triggered processes similar to the adaptive response induced by low doses of ionizing radiation: an increase in the level of oxidized DNA and cell death, as well as an increase in the content of NOX4 and NRF2 proteins. In animals subjected to emotional stress, suppressed DNA oxidation in response to irradiation, reduced levels of protective factor NRF2, as well as lymphocyte death were observed.

Abstract
The interaction of inorganic nanomaterials with biological fluids containing proteins can lead not only to the formation of a protein corona and thereby to a change in the biological activity of nanoparticles but also to a significant effect on the structural and functional properties of the biomolecules themselves. This work studied the interaction of nanoscale CeO2, the most versatile nanozyme, with human serum albumin (HSA). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed the formation of HSA-CeO2 nanoparticle conjugates. Changes in protein conformation, which depend on the concentration of both citrate-stabilized CeO2 nanoparticles and pristine CeO2 nanoparticles, did not affect albumin drug-binding sites and, accordingly, did not impair the HSA transport function. The results obtained shed light on the biological consequences of the CeO2 nanoparticles' entrance into the body, which should be taken into account when engineering nanobiomaterials to increase their efficiency and reduce the side effects.

Abstract
Objective : The acoustic stimulation in consciousness patients may improve the diagnosis assessment and the effectiveness of rehabilitation procedures. We aimed to investigate the event-related potential (ERP) response to emotional auditory stimuli in comatose patients. Methods : We measured the nonlinear and linear electroencephalogram (EEG) features, prepared the acoustic analysis of stimuli parameters, and assessed the subjective emotional rates of stimuli characteristics. Results : Patients with better outcomes had recognizable ERP responses and significant changes of the nonlinear EEG features to emotional sounds, unlike patients with worse outcomes. The response of comatose patients was attributed to acoustical features of emotional sounds, whereas the EEG response of healthy subjects was associated with their subjective feelings. The comatose patients demonstrated the variable EEG activity for neutral and emotional sounds. Conclusion : Thus, the EEG reactivity followed the better outcome of comatose patients to emotional stimuli. The study assumed the substantial differences of emotional stimuli perception in the healthy and unconscious brain.

Abstract
Individuals with ASD are known to have a tendency to have tactile sensory processing issues that could be associated with their impairment as regards social communication. The alterations in tactile processing in autistic subjects are usually accompanied by hypersensitivity and other unpleasant emotions induced by tactile contact. In our study, we investigated the impact of the velocity and the force of a tactile stroke received impersonally by a custom-built robotic device. A total of 21 adults with ASD and 22 adults from a control group participated in our study. The participants' responses were assessed according to subjective scales, EEG changes, and the dynamics of saliva antioxidants and oxytocin. It was found that the oxytocin level was significantly lower in subjects with ASD but increased after tactile stimulation. However, contrary to expectations, the increase in the oxytocin level in the target group negatively correlated with the subjective pleasantness of tactile stimulation and was probably associated with a stress-induced effect. The basic levels of antioxidants did not differ between the TD and ASD groups; however, these had significantly increased in individuals with ASD by the end of the study. The EEG findings, which revealed enhanced antioxidant levels, contributed to the relief of the cognitive control during the study.

Abstract
Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UVBI) is an alternative approach to the treatment of infectious diseases of various pathogeneses. Recently, UVBI has attracted particular interest as a new immunomodulatory method. Experimental studies available in the literature demonstrate the absence of precise mechanisms of the effect of ultraviolet radiation (UV) on blood. Here, we investigated the effect of UV radiation of line-spectrum mercury lamp (doses up to 500 mJ/cm2) traditionally used in UVBI on the major humoral blood components: albumin, globulins and uric acid. Preliminary data on the effect of various doses of UV radiation of full-spectrum flash xenon lamp (doses up to 136 mJ/cm2), a new promising source for UVBI, on the major blood plasma protein, albumin, are presented. The research methodology included spectrofluorimetric analysis of the oxidative modification of proteins and analysis of the antioxidant activity of humoral blood components by chemiluminometry. The effect of UV radiation on albumin caused its oxidative modification and, accordingly, an impairment of the transport properties of the protein. At the same time, UV-modified albumin and γ-globulins acquired pronounced antioxidant properties compared to native samples. Uric acid mixed with albumin did not protect the protein against UV-induced oxidation. The flash full-spectrum UV qualitatively had the same effect on albumin as line-spectrum UV did, but an order of magnitude lower doses were required to achieve comparable effects. The suggested protocol can be used for selecting a safe individual dose for UV therapy.

Abstract
A fast method for preparing aqueous graphene oxide (GO) dispersions by electrochemical oxidation of a graphite anode without preliminary intercalation with oxidizing agents is proposed. Ultrasonic probing was used in the modulation mode of ultrasonic waves (work/rest) for more efficient graphite oxidation-exfoliation. It is shown that the 4/2 s mode of ultrasonic modulation is the most effective due to the probe material's low corrosion while maintaining the optimum synthesis temperature not exceeding 30-35 °C and achieving the best characteristics of the resulting product. Three cases of anodic oxidation of graphite to obtain graphene oxide were considered: (1) a combined cathode-anode compartment, (2) a split cathode-anode salt-bridged compartment, and (3) separated anode compartment with a 3.5 kDa dialysis membrane. It was determined that the approach to synthesis with a divided cathode-anode compartment makes it possible to obtain GO sheets with fewer defects compared to chemical methods or methods with a combined cathode-anode compartment and makes it possible to control the oxidation degree of the material (C:O ratio) by varying the current density. The prepared samples showed good stability for more than six months. The spectral and morphological characteristics were studied. Using chemiluminometry in the luminol/Co(II)/H2O2 system, the antioxidant properties concerning three key reactive oxygen species (H2O2, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical) were demonstrated. It was also shown that the prepared GO dispersions do not induce lipid and phospholipid peroxidation.

Abstract
Thermal lens spectrometry along with spectrophotometric titration were used to assess the composition of the complex of oxidized cytochrome c (ferricytochrome c) with 1,1′,2,2′-tetraoleyl cardiolipin, which plays a key role in the initiation of apoptosis. Spectrophotometric titration was carried out for micromolar concentrations at which the complex is mainly insoluble, to assess the residual concentration in the solution and to estimate the solubility of the complex. Thermal lens spectrometry was used as a method of molecular absorption spectroscopy, which has two advantages over conventional optical transmission spectroscopy: the higher sensitivity of absorbance measurements and the possibility of studying the light absorption by chromophores and heat transfer in complex systems, such as living cells or tissues. Thermal lens measurements were carried out at nanomolar concentrations, where the complex is mainly in solution, i.e., under the conditions of its direct measurements. From the thermal lens measurements, the ratios of cytochrome c and cardiolipin in the complex were 50 at pH 7.4; 30 at pH 6.8; and 10 at pH 5.5, which fit well to the spectrophotometric data. The molecular solubility of the complex at pH 6.8–7.4 was estimated as 30 µmol/L.

Abstract
Fullerenes and metallofullerenes play an active role in homeostasis of reactive oxygen species and may cause oxidative damage to cells. As pristine fullerenes are a basis for derivatization, studying oxidative DNA damage/repair and apoptosis is important in terms of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity for their biomedical application. Aqueous dispersions of C60, C70, and Gd@C82 (5 nM and 1.5 μM) were cultured with human fetal lung fibroblasts for 1, 3, 24, and 72 h. Oxidative DNA damage/repair was assessed through concentration of 8-oxodG, double-strand breaks, and activation of BRCA1. Activity of apoptosis was assessed through the BCL2/BAX ratio. All three fullerenes caused oxidative modification of DNA at the early stages; C60 caused the most long-term damage, Gd@C82 caused the most short-term damage, and C70 caused "wave-like" dynamics. The dynamics of DNA repair correlated with the dynamics of oxidative damage, but Gd@C82 caused more prolonged activation of the repair system than C60 or C70. The oxidative toxicity of Gd@C82, is minor and the oxidative toxicity of C60 is mild and short-term, in contrast to C70. In relation to the studied effects, the fullerenes can be arranged in a safety row of Gd@C82 > C60 > C70.

Abstract
A semi-automated diffusion-dialysis purification procedure is proposed for the preparation of uncontaminated graphene oxide (GO) aqueous dispersions. The purification process is integrated with analytical-signal processing to control the purification degree online by several channels: oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity, and absorbance. This approach reduces the amounts of reagents for chemical treatment during dialysis. The total transition metal (Mn and Ti) content was reduced to a sub-ppb level (assessed by slurry nebulization in inductively coupled plasma optical atomic emission spectroscopy). Purified aqueous GO samples possess good stability for about a year with a zeta-potential of ca. -40 mV and a lateral size of ca. sub-µm. Purified GO samples showed increased antioxidant properties (up to five times compared to initial samples according to chemiluminometry by superoxide-radical (O2-) generated in situ from xanthine and xanthine oxidase with the lucigenin probe) and significantly decreased peroxidase-like activity (assessed by the H2O2-L-012 system).

Abstract
Cerium dioxide nanoparticles have a special place among engineered nanomaterials due to the wide range of their enzyme-like activities. They possess SOD-, catalase- and peroxidase-like properties, as well as recently discovered phosphatase-, photolyase-, phospholipase- and nuclease-like properties. Advancing biomedical applications of CeO2-based nanozymes requires an understanding of the features and mechanisms of the redox activity of CeO2 nanoparticles when entering the vascular bed, especially when interacting with lipid-protein supramolecular complexes (biomembranes and lipoproteins). In this paper, CeO2 nanoparticles are shown to possess two further types of nanozyme activity, namely lipo- and phospholipoperoxidase-like activities. Compared to a strong blood prooxidant, hemoglobin, CeO2 nanoparticles act as a mild oxidising agent, since they exhibit a 106 times lower, and 20 times lower, prooxidant capacity towards linoleic acid and phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxides, respectively. Compared to the widespread pharmacological preparation of iron, Fe(iii) carboxymaltose (antianemic preparation Ferinject®), the prooxidant capacity of CeO2 nanoparticles towards lipid and phospholipid substrates has been shown to be 102 times lower, and 4 times higher, respectively. The data obtained on the mechanism of the interaction of nanodisperse CeO2 with the main components of biological membranes, lipids and phospholipids enable the substantial expansion of the scope of biomedical applications of CeO2 nanozymes. CeO2 nanoparticles were shown to possess two novel types of enzyme-like activity, namely lipoperoxidase and phospholipoperoxidase activity.![]()

Abstract
Inductors of myogenic stem cell differentiation attract attention, as they can be used to treat myodystrophies and post-traumatic injuries. Functionalization of fullerenes makes it possible to obtain water-soluble derivatives with targeted biochemical activity. This study examined the effects of the phosphonate C60 fullerene derivatives on the expression of myogenic transcription factors and myogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Uptake of the phosphonate C60 fullerene derivatives in human MSCs, intracellular ROS visualization, superoxide scavenging potential, and the expression of myogenic, adipogenic, and osteogenic differentiation genes were studied. The prolonged MSC incubation (within 7–14 days) with the C60 pentaphoshonate potassium salt promoted their differentiation towards the myogenic lineage. The transcription factors and gene expressions determining myogenic differentiation (MYOD1, MYOG, MYF5, and MRF4) increased, while the expression of osteogenic differentiation factors (BMP2, BMP4, RUNX2, SPP1, and OCN) and adipogenic differentiation factors (CEBPB, LPL, and AP2 (FABP4)) was reduced or did not change. The stimulation of autophagy may be one of the factors contributing to the increased expression of myogenic differentiation genes in MSCs. Autophagy may be caused by intracellular alkalosis and/or short-term intracellular oxidative stress.

Abstract
Background: Fullerenes and metallofullerenes can be considered promising nanopharmaceuticals themselves and as a basis for chemical modification. As reactive oxygen species homeostasis plays a vital role in cells, the study of their effect on genes involved in oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory responses are of particular importance. Methods: Human fetal lung fibroblasts were incubated with aqueous dispersions of C60, C70, and Gd@C82 in concentrations of 5 nM and 1.5 µM for 1, 3, 24, and 72 h. Cell viability, intracellular ROS, NOX4, NFκB, PRAR-γ, NRF2, heme oxygenase 1, and NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 expression have been studied. Results & conclusion: The aqueous dispersions of C60, C70, and Gd@C82 fullerenes are active participants in reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. Low and high concentrations of aqueous fullerene dispersions (AFD) have similar effects. C70 was the most inert substance, C60 was the most active substance. All AFDs have both “prooxidant” and “antioxidant” effects but with a different balance. Gd@C82 was a substance with more pronounced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while C70 had more pronounced “prooxidant” properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cytochrome b5-reductase (CYB5R) and cytochrome P450 reductase (CYPOR) are important for cell metabolism; however, their role in thyroid hormonogenesis and carcinogenesis has not been elucidated yet. The activity of CYB5R correlates with the metastasis in breast cancer, but there are no similar studies for CYB5R and CYPOR for thyroid tumors. The aim of this study was to elucidate the activity of CYB5R and CYPOR changes in benign euthyroid and hyperthyroid neoplasms and in papillary thyroid cancer for their potential application as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis prediction of thyroid cancer. METHODS Thirty-six patients with thyroid diseases participated in the study. The control euthyroid nodular goiter group included ten patients; the thyrotoxic nodular or diffuse goiter group included 14 patients; the papillary thyroid cancer T1-2N0-1M0 (PTC) group included 12 patients. The activity of CYB5R and CYPOR was assessed with lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence stimulated by NADH and NADPH, respectively. RESULTS Compared to the control euthyroid nodular goiter group, activity of CYB5R and CYPOR increased ~5 and 10 times, respectively, in toxic goiter, and 15 and 30 times, respectively, in half of cases of PTC. The change in activity of CYPOR was more pronounced compared to CYB5R. Within the PTC group, the subgroups with low and high activities of microsomal reductases were identified. Microsomal reductases in follicular adenoma was 2-4-fold less active compared to the euthyroid nodular goiter and the low-activity PTC group. CONCLUSIONS Activity of tissue microsomal reductases varies in thyroid pathology and can be considered as a promising biomarker for differential diagnostics of benign and malignant thyroid tumors.

Abstract
A pleasant touch reduces psychoemotional stress via the oxytocin mechanism due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Our research is aimed to reveal the correlations between the subjectively perceived pleasantness of touch, the antioxidant potential of saliva, and salivary oxytocin. A total of 56 healthy volunteers aged 18-38 years participated in the study. The control group consisted of 24 volunteers. The participants were subjected to tactile stimulation using a specially designed protocol. They ranked the touch pleasantness on a scale from 1 to 10. Heart rate variability and low-frequency/high-frequency ratios from the power spectral density of ECG were determined to assess psychoemotional relaxation. Salivary oxytocin and antioxidant capacity were quantified before and after the touch test. We found a significant increase in salivary antioxidant potential and oxytocin after pleasant tactile stimulation for the participants compared to the control group. The difference in antioxidant capacity values before and after the test positively correlated with mean pleasantness in the touch test (r = 0.57) and the difference in heart rate variability (r = 0.67); it negatively correlated with the difference in low-frequency/high-frequency ECG band ratio (r = -0.59). Oxytocin ratio positively correlated with the difference in antioxidant capacity values (r = 0.47). As a result of tactile stimulation, a significant increase in the antioxidant capacity of saliva and salivary oxytocin was found in the test group compared to the control group. These findings support further studies of the effects of pleasant touch on hormonal and oxidative metabolism.

Abstract
The antioxidant potential (capacity and activity) of aqueous fullerene dispersions (AFD) of non-functionalized C60, C70, and Gd@C82 endofullerene (in micromolar concentration range) was estimated based on chemiluminescence measurements of the model of luminol and generation of organic radicals by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (ABAP). The antioxidant capacity was estimated by the TRAP method, from the concentration of half-suppression, and from the suppression area in the initial period. All three approaches agree and show that the antioxidant capacity of AFDs increased in the order Gd@C82 < C70 < C60. Mathematical modeling of the long-term kinetics data was used for antioxidant activity estimation. The effect of C60 and C70 is found to be quenching of the excited product of luminol with ABAP-generated radical and not an actual antioxidant effect; quenching constants differ insignificantly. Apart from quenching with a similar constant, the AFD of Gd@C82 exhibits actual antioxidant action. The antioxidant activity in Gd@C82 is 300-fold higher than quenching constants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the correlation between the blood plasma antioxidant profile and the transcriptional activity of the Nrf2 gene in acute psychosis in patients with schizophrenia and alcoholism. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 40 patients with the first episode of the paranoid form of schizophrenia, 33 patients with schizophrenic psychosis who had previously received therapy, 22 patients with first-time acute alcohol psychosis, and 25 healthy volunteers. The level of Nrf2 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells was estimated by flow cytometry, and the antioxidant profile of blood plasma was estimated with chemiluminometry. RESULTS The total and «thiol» antioxidant capacity were reduced in patients with initially diagnosed schizophrenic psychosis and alcoholic psychosis. In patients after treatment, the total antioxidant capacity was higher compared to previously untreated patients. The level of Nrf2 protein in mononuclear cells in patients with the first psychotic episode was significantly lower than in patients with alcoholism and lower than in the control group. In patients with alcoholic psychosis, Nrf2 level was correlated with both the total antioxidant capacity due to uric acid and the «thiol» antioxidant capacity; in patients with psychosis in schizophrenia, Nrf2 level was correlated only with the «thiol» antioxidant capacity. CONCLUSIONS The correlation between the total and «thiol» antioxidant capacity and the level of Nrf2 in mononuclear cells of patients with alcohol delirium indicates the undamaged state of the regulation. The absence of a correlation between the total antioxidant capacity and the level of Nrf2 in patients with schizophrenia indicates a disturbance of the activation of the Nrf2 pathway due to, possibly, a part associated with the participation of uric acid.

Abstract
Despite widespread using electroencephalography (EEG) and Doppler ultrasound in pediatric neurology clinical practice, there are still no well-known correlations between these methods that could contribute to a better understanding of brain processes and development of neurological pathology. This study aims to reveal relationship between EEG and Doppler ultrasound methods. We compared two cohorts of adults and preschool children with no history of neurological or mental diseases. The data analysis included investigation of EEG and carotid blood flow indexes, which are significant in neurological diagnosis, as well as calculation of linear and non-linear EEG parameters and ratios between the systolic peak velocities of carotid arteries and carotid blood asymmetry. We have found age-dependent correlations between EEG and power Doppler ultrasound imaging (PDUI) data. Carotid blood flow asymmetry correlated with delta-rhythm power spectral density only in preschoolers. The ratios of blood flow velocities in the internal carotid arteries to those in the common carotid arteries correlated with higher peak alpha frequency and lower fractal dimension; moreover, they were associated with lower Epworth sleepiness scale scores. The study revealed significant correlations between EEG and PDUI imaging indexes, which are different for healthy children and adults. Despite the fact that the correlations were associated with non-clinical states such as overwork or stress, we assumed that the investigated parameters could be applicable for clinical trials.

Abstract
Affective touch plays an important role in human social bonding, affiliative behavior, and in general emotional well-being. A system of unmyelinated low-threshold mechanosensitive C-type afferents innervating hairy skin (C-tactile or CT system) is postulated to provide the neurophysiological background of affective touch perception. C-tactile afferents respond optimally to soft and slow strokes, and this response correlates positively with pleasure ratings of tactile stimuli. As gentle touch is consistently associated with oxytocin release further promoting prosocial behavior, it has been suggested that this effect is mediated by the response of C-tactile afferents. This study assesses a possible link between CT-optimal touch, its subjective pleasantness, EEG indices of cortical arousal, and peripheral oxytocin response. EEG was recorded in 28 healthy volunteers during resting state and tactile stimulation[gentle slow brush strokes on forearm (CT-targeted touch) and palm (non-CT-targeted touch)]. Saliva samples were collected before and after the touch stimulation. Oxytocin concentration increase was significantly associated with greater subjective ratings of CT-targeted touch but not of non-CT-targeted touch, and with lower peak alpha frequency values indicating decreased cortical arousal. The findings suggest that CT-targeted stimulation triggers oxytocin release but only when the touch is perceived at an individual level as having clearly positive affective salience. This corresponds to previous studies reporting that oxytocin response to touch can be related to different personality factors, and bears important implications for planning touch-based interventions in social and medical care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the antioxidant profile of blood plasma in patients with paranoid schizophrenia and Alzheimer disease (AD). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-three patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 18 patients with AD were included in the study. Patients with schizophrenia were stratified into two subgroups by response to therapy. The indicators of the antioxidant profile were determined using methods based on chemiluminometry and spectrofluorimetry. RESULTS Systemic oxidative stress due to insufficiency of low molecular weight plasma antioxidants is not determined neither in AD nor in treatment resistant schizophrenia. At the same time, a «thiol» oxidative stress, which indirectly indicates a deficiency of the glutathione system, is present in both groups. In patients with paranoid schizophrenia responsive to treatment, systemic oxidative stress is more pronounced and «thiol» oxidative stress is less significant. Among the antipsychotics studied, haloperidol, zuclopenthixol, risperidone and ziprasidone do not exhibit antioxidant properties, but periciazine, clozapine and especially chlorpromazine exhibit strong antioxidant properties, but they unlikely affect the antioxidant potential of blood plasma. CONCLUSIONS The glutathione part of the antioxidant system is mostly affected, but systemic oxidative stress is not significant in patients with treatment resistant paranoid schizophrenia and AD. Oxidative disorders are more pronounced in treatment responsive paranoid schizophrenia.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to study the effects of EEG examination and ABA-therapy on resting-state EEG in children with low-functioning autism and tactile defensiveness. Methods We have performed this study with three cohorts of preschoolers: children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) who needed applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy due to their tactile defensiveness; children with ASD who didn't need ABA therapy; and the control group of healthy children. Number of microstates was determined in the initial and final parts of the resting-state EEGs. Results and conclusions Children with higher tactile defensiveness for the most part had specific EEG microstates associated with unpleasant emotions and senses. The EEG microstates of children with ASD who did not need ABA therapy, had more similarities with the EEG microstates of typically developing children except for temporary changes. Meanwhile, the children with tactile defensiveness demonstrated typical patterns of EEG microstates from start to finish of the procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the radical-producing function of neutrophils in paranoid schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 40 patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 22 with Alzheimer's disease. To assess the functional activity of neutrophils, whole blood samples were analyzed using the chemiluminescent method with two-step cell stimulation. Indicators of radical-producing activity of neutrophils in patients were compared to those in age-matched healthy people. RESULTS The quantitative indicators of radical-producing activity of neutrophils in the paranoid schizophrenia group and in the Alzheimer's disease group correspond to reference intervals of healthy donors, however almost one third of patients with paranoid schizophrenia had an altered shape of the chemiluminescent curve. CONCLUSION The neutrophil immune response might be involved in the pathogenesis of paranoid schizophrenia only in some cases.

Abstract
Endohedral metal fullerene are potential nanopharmaceuticals for MRI; thus, it is important to study their effect on reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. Superoxide anion radical is one of the key ROS. The reactivity of aqueous dispersions of pristine (non-functionalized) fullerenes and Gd@C82 endofullerene have been studied with respect to superoxide in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase chemiluminescence system. It was found that C60 and C70 in aqueous dispersions react with superoxide as scavengers by a similar mechanism; differences in activity are determined by cluster parameters, primarily the concentration of available, acting molecules at the surface. Gd endofullerene is characterized by a significantly (one-and-a-half to two orders of magnitude) higher reactivity with respect to C60 and C70 and is likely to exhibit nanozyme (SOD-mimic) properties, which can be accounted for by the nonuniform distribution of electron density of the fullerene cage due to the presence of the endohedral atom; however, in the cell model, Gd@C82 showed the lowest activity compared to C60 and C70, which can be accounted for by its higher affinity for the lipid phase.

Abstract
Free radical reactions play an important role in biological functions of living systems. The balance between oxidants and antioxidants is necessary for the normal homeostasis of cells and organisms. Experimental works demonstrate the role of oxidative stress that is caused by influenza virus as well as the toxic effects of some antiviral drugs. Therefore, antiviral drugs should be characterized by its pro- and antioxidant activity, because it can affect its therapeutic efficiency. The aim of the study was to quantify the antioxidant capacity and propose the mechanism of the antioxidant effect of the antiviral drug Umifenovir (Arbidol®). The kinetic chemiluminescence with the 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride + luminol system was used to quantify the antioxidant capacity of Umifenovir relative to the standard compound Trolox. With computer simulation, the reaction scheme and rate constants were proposed. The antioxidant capacity of 0.9 μM Umifenovir (maximum concentration of Umifenovir in blood after oral administration of 200 mg) was as high as 1.65 ± 0.18 μM of Trolox. Thus, the total antioxidant capacity of Umifenovir is comparable to the antioxidant capacity of Trolox. Unlike Trolox, Umifenovir reacts with free radicals in two stages. For Trolox, the free radical scavenging rate constant was k = 2000 nM-1 min.-1, for Umifenovir k1 = 300 nM-1min.-1, k2 = 4 nM-1min.-1. Slower kinetics of Umifenovir provides the prolonged antioxidant effect when compared to Trolox. This phenomenon can make a serious contribution to the compensation of oxidative stress that is caused by a viral disease and the therapeutic effect of the drug.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assessment of leukocyte activity as the main source of ROS in seminal fluid of patients with normospermia and pathospermia using an original protocol based on the kinetic chemiluminescence method and adapted for semen analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective study was attended by 95 men of reproductive age who applied to the Research Center of Medical Genetics (Moscow) for semen analysis. The material for the study were samples of native ejaculate. Chemiluminescent measurements were performed on a Lum-1200 chemiluminometer (DISoft, Russia) using the original method. RESULTS Both in amplitude of basal and stimulated response, between the "normozoospermia", "pathozoospermia" and "pathozoospermia + leucospermia" groups, significant differences were obtained in the level of ROS production by leukocytes (p<0.05): the median level of basal chemiluminescence, normalized on the count of leukocytes was 0.13, 0.71 and 1.78, respectively; the median level of stimulated chemiluminescence normalized to the number of leukocytes was 0.62, 2.14, 5.94, respectively. The level of stimulated response did not exceed 0.5 arb. units in normozoospermic samples. In pathospermic groups, the level of stimulated response was low in about a third of semen samples, it was moderate in one third of patients, and high in one third of patients. CONCLUSIONS A protocol previously developed for blood analysis was adapted to analyze the total ROS level produced by leukocytes in seminal fluid. In the groups of "pathozoospermia", "pathozoospermia + leucospermia", the level of basal ROS production by leukocytes was about 5 and 15 times higher than in the "normozoospermia" group, the level of stimulated ROS production was 3.5 and 9.5 times; this indicates oxidative stress, including with a normal number of leukocytes.

Abstract
AIM to evaluate antioxidant properties of dietary supplements Nefradoz, as well as its role in the prevention of calcium oxalate stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our study consisted of two parts, clinical and experimental. In the clinical trial a total of 80 patients with recurrent calcium oxalate urolithiasis of various localization were included. All patients were divided into 2 groups. In treatment group (n=45) patients received Nefradoz 1 capsule 2 times a day. In control group (n=35) no treatment was prescribed. In all patients a biomarkers level (bikunin, osteopontin, nephrocalcin) in urine was determined by ELISA. In addition, Litos-test was performed. Follow-up duration was 6 months. In the experimental part of the study, the antioxidant properties of Nefradoz were evaluated using chemiluminescence method. RESULTS The antioxidant activity of resveratrol, which is contained in 300 mg Nefradoz (1 capsule), was 23.66+/-1.18, which corresponds to the moderate activity. After 6 months of therapy a level of bikunin and osteopontin did not significantly changed, which indicates a minimal risk of stone recurrence. According to the Litos-test, the activity of stone formation in Nefradoz group significantly decreased to minimal values in 42 out 45 patients (p<0.05). In the control group an excretion of biomarkers was minimal, which significantly increased the risk of stone formation. CONCLUSION Dietary supplement NefraDoz can be used for prevention of calcium oxalate urolithiasis in case of increased stone formation according to the Litos-test. The antispasmodic, uroseptic and diuretic effects allow to maintain the effective level of biomarkers which is required for a recurrence-free course of urolithiasis compared to the control. The antioxidant activity, primarily determined by the resveratrol, can sufficiently compensate for oxidative stress and prevent the development of calcium oxalate stone. Further studies are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
Neutrophil dysfunction plays a considerable role.in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) The protective function of neutrophils is carried out through various mechanisms: isolation of granular antimicrobial peptides (gAMP), microbial phagocytosis with subsequent degradation via reactive oxygen species inside the phagolysosomes; as well as bactericidal action due to the release of networks from chromatin and gAMP, also called neutrophil extracellular traps (NECTs). The development of neutropenia in SLE has multiple causes, including the formation of antibodies directly to leukocytes; that of neutralizing autoantibodies to the growth factors of neutrophils and cells - myeloid precursors; bone marrow suppression; involvement of neutrophils in the processes of apoptosis and NETosis. Neutrophils in SLE are characterized by reduced phagocytic ability and pathological oxidative activity. In SLE, there is a decrease in the ability to remove the products of neutrophil apoptosis, which is correlated with disease activity. SLE patients are noted to have a higher expression level of the genes specific for low-density granulocytes, an abnormal immature neutrophil population. The impaired processes of formation of NECTs and removal NETosis products play a substantial role in the pathogenesis of SLE. It is shown that the abnormal formation of NECTs also causes endothelial injury and increases the risk of thromboses. The design of novel drugs that act on the specific parts of the formation of NECTs or contribute to their removal from the extracellular environment can propel therapy for SLE and other autoimmune diseases to new heights. There is evidence for further investigations of neutrophil-mediated pathogenetic processes in SLE in order to identify potential therapeutic targets and to understand the mechanisms of action of drugs used in clinical practice.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is a pathogenetic factor of many diseases. The control of its level is important for early diagnosis and therapy adjustment. In this work, antioxidant status was estimated in blood plasma. In the system of 2,2'-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride-luminol a set of chemiluminescence kinetic curve parameters is proposed for oxidative stress level estimation (the latent period τ(lat) and the increasing of analytical signal ΔI(CL)). Uric acid and albumin were shown as the main components that responsible for changes in chemiluminescence kinetic curve of plasma. Serum albumin undergoes oxidative modification in dose-depend manner under the action of UV irradiation, it causes the enhancement of antioxidant properties. Changes in plasma chemiluminescence kinetics are proposed as a measure of oxidative stress in human body.

Abstract
The accumulation of UV photolysis products of amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan, which possess an antioxidant activity, has been studied by the method of luminol-activated chemiluminescence. The amount of antioxidant products was judged by the value of the total antioxidant potential of a UV-irradiated solution, the measure of which was the distance between the peaks of the chemiluminescence curve in the system 2,2'-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane)hydrochloride + luminol in a UV-irradiated and an unirradiated samples (induction period, tau(i)). Simultaneously, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of unirradiared and UV-irradiated amino acid solutions were recorded. It was shown that, upon the exposure of a tryptophan solution to radiation, the accumulation of the fluorescent product N-formyl kynurenine (lambda(em) = 325 nm, lambda(max) = 440 nm) occures, and the curve of its accumulation was similar to the curve of growth of tau(i) photoproducts produced during UV-radiation. When a tyrosine solution was irradiated, the main fluorescent product was dityrosine (lambda(em) = 310 nm, lambda(max) = 415 nm). Nevertheless, the dose dependencies of the formation of dityrosine, and the total antioxidant potential (tau(i)) were completely different. It was found that another product of tyrosine UV-photolysis, dioxyphenylalanine, possessed a pronounced antioxidant activity. It was concluded that the main antioxidants produced under UV-irradiation of tryptophan is formyl kynurenine, and under the irradiation of tyrosine, dioxyphenylalanine.

Abstract
In this work, the effect of liposomes consisting of tetraoleyl cardiolipin and dioleyl phosphatidylcholine (1 : 1, mol/mol) on the rate of three more reactions of Cyt c heme with H2O2 was studied: (i) Cyt c (Fe2+) oxidation to Cyt c (Fe3+), (ii) Fe...S(Met80) bond breaking, and (iii) heme porphyrin ring decomposition. It was revealed that the rates of all those reactions increased greatly in the presence of liposomes containing cardiolipin and not of those consisting of only phosphatidylcholine, and approximately to the same extent as peroxidase activity. These data suggest that cardiolipin activates specifically Cyt c peroxidase activity not only because it promotes Fe...S(Met80) bond breaking but also facilitates H2O2 penetration to the reaction center.

Abstract
In this work, the actions of bovine heart cardiolipin, synthetic tetraoleyl cardiolipin, and a nonspecific anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on cytochrome c (Cyt c) peroxidase activity recorded by chemiluminescence in the presence of luminol and on the Fe...S(Met80) bond whose presence was estimated by a weak absorption band amplitude with peak at 695-700 nm (A(695)) were compared. A strict concurrency between Fe...S(Met80) breaking (A(695)) and cytochrome peroxidase activity enhancement was shown to exist at cardiolipin/Cyt c and SDS/Cyt c molar ratios of 0 : 1 to 50 : 1 (by chemiluminescence). Nevertheless, when A(695) completely disappeared, Cyt c peroxidase activity under the action of cardiolipin was 20 times more than that under the action of SDS, and at low ligand/protein molar ratios (=4), SDS failed to activate peroxidase activity while cardiolipin enhanced Cyt c peroxidase activity 16-20-fold. A(695) did not change on Cyt c binding with liposomes consisting of tetraoleyl cardiolipin and phosphatidylcholine (1 : 10 : 10), while peroxidase activity was enhanced by a factor of 8. Breaking of 70% of the Fe...S(Met80) bonds resulted in only threefold enhancement of peroxidase activity. Cardiolipin-activated Cyt c peroxidase activity was reduced by high ionic strength solution (1 M KCl). The aggregated data suggest that cardiolipin activating action is caused, first, by a nonspecific effect of Fe...S(Met80) breaking as the result of conformational changes in the protein globule caused by the protein surface electrostatic recharging by an anionic amphiphilic molecule, and second, by a specific acceleration of the peroxidation reaction which is most likely due to enhanced heme accessibility for H(2)O(2) as a result of the hydrophobic interaction between cardiolipin and cytochrome.
