In vitro protein fractionation methods for ruminant feeds. Animal 2023; 17:101027. Abstract
Estimating protein fractions and their degradation rate are vital to ensure optimum protein supply and degradation in the digestive system of ruminants. This study investigated the possibility of using the ANKOM gas production system and preserved rumen fluid to estimate the protein fractions and in vitro degradability of protein-rich feeds. Three in vitro methods: (1) gas production method (2) Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS), and (3) the unavailable nitrogen assay of Ross (uNRoss) were used to quantify protein fractions of four feeds (lupin meal, vetch grain, Desmanthus hay, and soybean meal). Rumen fluid mixed with 5% dimethyl sulfoxide and frozen at -20 °C was also compared against fresh rumen fluid in the gas production and uNRoss methods. All three methods ranked the feeds identically in the proportions of available (degradable or 'a + b') protein fractions as vetch grain, soybean meal, lupin meal, and Desmanthus hay in decreasing order. The use of fresh rumen fluid produced greater available protein fractions than preserved rumen fluid in all feeds. However, there was no difference between total gas production from lupin meal and vetch grain fermented for 16 h in either rumen fluid source. The in vitro degradable CP (IVDP) was higher for vetch grain (46 and 70%) at the 4th and 8th hours of incubation than other feeds, whereas soybean meal (85%) exceeded the other feeds after the 16th hour of incubation (P < 0.001). The greatest ammonia-N concentration was from soybean meal (1.27 mg/g) and lupin meal (0.87 mg/g) fermented for four hours using fresh rumen fluid. The proportion of fraction 'b' for soybean (82.1% CP) and lupin meals (39.4% CP) from the CNCPS method were not different (P = 0.001) from the fraction 'b' estimation of the gas production method for the same feeds (r = 0.99). Regardless of the methods, a greater water-soluble protein fraction was found from vetch grain (39.6-46.6% CP), and the proportion of fraction 'c' or unavailable protein in Desmanthus hay (39.1-41.5% CP) exceeded other substrates (P < 0.001). The strong positive correlation between fractions across different methods and identical ranking of feeds suggests the possibility of using ANKOM gas production apparatus for protein fractionation.

Abstract
Progeny born to primiparous sows farrowing their first litter, often called gilt progeny (GP), are typically characterised by their poorer overall production performance than progeny from multiparous sows (sow progeny; SP). Gilt progeny consistently grow slower, are born and weaned lighter, and have higher postweaning illness and mortality rates than SP. Collectively, their poorer performance culminates in a long time to reach market weight and, ultimately, reduced revenue. Due to the high replacement rates of sows, the primiparous sow and her progeny represent a large proportion of the herd resulting in a significant loss for the pig industry. While the reasons for poorer performance are complex and multifaceted, they may largely be attributed to the immature age at which gilts are often mated and the significant impact of this on their metabolism during gestation and lactation. As a result, this can have negative consequences on the piglet itself. To improve GP performance, it is crucial to understand the biological basis for differences between GP and SP. The purpose of this review is to summarise published literature investigating differences in growth performance and health status between GP and SP. It also examines the primiparous sow during gestation and lactation and how the young sow must support her own growth while supporting the metabolic demands of her pregnancy and the growth and development of her litter. Finally, the underlying physiology of GP is discussed in terms of growth and development in utero, the neonatal period, and the early development of the gastrointestinal tract. The present review concludes that there are a number of interplaying factors relating to the anatomy and physiology of the primiparous sow and of GP themselves. The studies presented herein strongly suggest that poor support of piglet growth in utero and reduced colostrum and milk production and consumption are largely responsible for the underperformance of GP. It is therefore recommended that future management strategies focus on supporting the primiparous sow during gestation and lactation, increasing the preweaning growth of GP to improve their ability to cope with the stressors of weaning, selection of reproductive traits such as uterine capacity to improve birth weights and ultimately GP performance, and finally, increase the longevity of sows to reduce the proportion of GP entering the herd.

Abstract
Pig production faces seasonal fluctuations. The low farrowing rate of sows mated in summer, increased carcass fatness of progeny born to the sows mated in summer, and slower growth rate of finisher pigs in summer are three economically important impacts identified in the pig industry. The purpose of this review is to examine advances over the past decade in understanding the mechanisms underlying the three impacts associated with summer conditions, particularly heat stress (HS), and to provide possible amelioration strategies. For impact 1, summer mating results in low farrowing rates mainly caused by the high frequency of early pregnancy disruptions. The contributions of semen DNA damage, poor oocyte quality, local progesterone concentrations, and suboptimal embryonic oestrogen secretion are discussed, as these all may contribute to HS-mediated effects around conception. Despite this, it is still unclear what the underlying mechanisms might be and thus, there is currently a lack of commercially viable solutions. For impact 2, there have been recent advances in the understanding of gestational HS on both the sow and foetus, with gestational HS implicated in decreased foetal muscle fibre number, a greater proportion of lighter piglets, and increased carcass fatness at slaughter. So far, no effective strategies have been developed to mitigate the impacts associated with gestational HS on foetuses. For impact 3, the slowed growth rate of pigs during summer is one reason for the reduced carcass weights in summer. Studies have shown that the reduction in growth rates may be due to more than reductions in feed intake alone, and the impaired intestinal barrier function and inflammatory response may also play a role. In addition, it is consistently reported that HS attenuates fat mobilisation which can potentially exacerbate carcass fatness when carcass weight is increased. Novel feed additives have exhibited the potential to reduce the impacts of HS on intestinal barrier function in grower pigs. Collectively, based on these three impacts, the economic loss associated with HS can be estimated. A review of these impacts is warranted to better align the future research directions with the needs of the pig industry. Ultimately, a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and continuous investments in developing commercially viable strategies to combat HS will benefit the pig industry.

Abstract
Plants are integral components of pig and poultry feed, and aside from their raw nutritive value, some phytochemicals contain bioactive compounds. The aim of the present paper is to review recent advances in the use of some phytochemicals in pig and poultry feed, focusing on the examples of isoquinoline alkaloids, polyphenol rich sugarcane extracts and superoxide dismutase-rich melon pulp extracts. As gut health is critical for efficient production, the review will focus on recent results modulating oxidative stress within the gastrointestinal tract and the potential mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Simple Summary This study was conducted to generate a greater understanding of the abattoir factors that influence the incidence of dark cutting in Australian grain-fed beef. Elucidation of the factors that are associated with an increased risk of dark cutting will allow for the development of effective management strategies to be implemented to reduce dark cutting in feedlot cattle. This will increase profitability across the supply chain for both producers and abattoirs, whom need to collaborate for the minimization of dark cutting. Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of carcass traits, lairage time and weather conditions during lairage and abattoir factors that impact the incidence of dark cutting in 142,228 grain-fed carcasses, as defined by Meat Standards Australia (MSA) guidelines. This study was conducted over a 12-month period analysing data from cattle that were supplied from seven feedlots and processed at three abattoirs. Abattoir data indicated that the average incidence of dark cutting within the study was 2.8%. Increased wind speeds (WSs) and rain during lairage at the abattoir was associated with an increased risk of dark cutting, whereas variation in ambient temperature and/or relative humidity did not influence dark cutting. Heavier carcasses with whiter fat, larger hump heights, more rib fat, higher marble scores and lower ossification had lower incidences of dark cutting. The factors abattoir, time in lairage, time to grading and grader within Abattoir had significant effects on the incidence of dark cutting. The results from this study suggest that reducing the time in lairage and increasing the time between slaughter and grading are the two major ways to reduce dark cutting in MSA carcasses.

Abstract
Background Adipose tissue may have different metabolic and endocrine functions depending on the region of the body in which it is located. While visceral or intra-abdominal fat has been found to contribute to leptin concentrations, insulin resistance and obesity-related diseases, there are only a few imaging studies documenting the preferential distribution of body fat to either the intra-abdominal or subcutaneous compartments in dogs. This study aimed to determine if CT-measured abdominal fat distributed preferentially to the visceral space (V) relative to the subcutaneous space (SQ), with increasing DXA-determined total body fat percentage; and if ultrasound measurements of the ventral midline subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral adipose thickness (VAT) can be used to estimate the distribution of fat to the subcutaneous and visceral abdominal spaces, in a sample of 22 dogs with variable body condition. Results Multivariate analysis showed no statistically significant correlation between visceral to subcutaneous fat ratio (V/SQ) and increasing total body fat percentage (β = − 0.07, p = 0.733), but strong correlation with age (β = 0.71 p = 0.002). A substantial amount of variation for the ultrasound visceral adipose thickness to subcutaneous fat thickness (VAT/SAT) could be explained by both CT V/SQ and sex (R2Adjusted = 0.477, p = 0.001), with female dogs having significant lower VAT/SAT ratios compared to the male dogs (p = 0.047). The ultrasound fat measurements appeared moderately reliable, but a larger sample number is required to confirm this. Conclusions The findings suggest that dogs with a relatively healthy to slightly overweight body condition score, distribute fat relatively similarly between their peritoneal (visceral) and subcutaneous abdominal compartments with increasing total body fat percentage. However, there was increased fat distribution to the peritoneal space relative to the subcutaneous space with increasing age. Further, abdominal ultrasound may be useful in estimating the ratio of fat distribution to both the abdominal visceral and subcutaneous spaces.

Abstract
Background Computed tomography (CT) has been used to estimate body composition and determine tissue distribution in dogs, despite limited validation. This may introduce error into estimates of body composition studies and its effect on health in dogs. Further, the modality has not been validated against dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or over a wide range of dog breeds, ages and sexes. The objective of this study was to validate the use of semi-automated, abdominal volume CT for estimating total body composition of dogs relative to DXA. Twenty-two staff-owned dogs (weighing between 5.1-60 kg) were sedated and underwent full body DXA scan and abdominal CT. Abdominal tissue composition was estimated by CT using semi-automated volume segmentation, over predetermined tissue Hounsfield threshold values. Abdominal tissue composition determined by the various CT threshold ranges was compared to total body composition determined by DXA. Results Abdominal tissue composition estimated by CT strongly correlated with the estimates derived from DXA with a small Bland-Altman mean percentage differences in values: total body mass (− 250/2000HU: r2 = 0.985; − 1.10%); total fat mass (− 250/-25HU: r2 = 0.981; − 1.90%); total lean tissue mass (− 25/150HU: r2 = 0.972; 3.47%); and total bone mineral content (150/2000HU: r2 = 0.900; − 0.87%). Although averaged CT values compared well to DXA analysis, there was moderate variation in the individual predicted values. There was near perfect inter- and intra-observer agreement in segmentation volumes for abdominal fat. Conclusions Abdominal volume computed tomography (CT) accurately and reliably estimates total body composition in dogs, but greater variations may be observed in dogs weighing less than 10 kg.

Abstract
Dietary supplementation of vitamin E (VitE) in a synthetic or natural form was examined. Forty-eight lambs were assigned (n = 16) to either a grain-based diet at moderate (MOD, 42 mg∙kg-1 VitE as all-rac α-tocopheryl acetate) or supranutritional (SUP, 285 mg∙kg-1 of vitE) levels of synthetic VitE or a lucerne hay-based diet (LUC; 37 mg∙kg-1 VitE) for 8 weeks. Meat from the LUC group had lower muscle n-6 and PUFA levels compared to meat from the MOD and SUP groups. Despite a similar VitE intake, muscle VitE was higher for LUC compared to MOD, while SUP lambs showed the highest VitE. Lipid oxidation did not differ between groups. For fresh meat, redness tended to be higher in LUC fed lambs than the other two groups, but brownness formation was only lower than the SUP group. For aged meat colour stability, redness tended to be higher in lambs fed SUP and LUC, whereas highest browning occurred in the MOD group.

Abstract
This study investigated the use of camelina forage and meal supplementation to a finishing diet on carcass traits, composition and retail value of lamb and hoggets. The metabolisable energy and crude protein concentrations of all 3 diets were 10-11 MJ/kg DM and 14-15% CP. Thirty maternal Composite wether lambs (28-38 kg) and 30 Merino wether hoggets (37-43 kg) were used in a 3 × 2 factorial experiment. Animals were slaughtered after 10 weeks of feeding with carcasses classified as 'Heavy lamb' or 'Heavy hogget' (>22 kg carcass weight). Carcass traits, composition, meat mineral concentrations and retail colour were measured. Camelina diets increased liveweight (P < 0.02) and carcass weight (P < 0.002) for both sheep types. Carcass weight (P < 0.005) and dressing % (P < 0.01) were lower for Merino hoggets than Composite lambs. Mineral concentration and retail colour stability of fresh meat were unaffected by diet, with 72 h retail colour considered acceptable for consumers.

Abstract
Selection for high productivity has resulted in ruminants adversely affected by heat stress (HS) due to their high metabolic rate and feed intake. One mechanism to ameliorate HS is to reduce the forage-to-concentrate ratio in the diet, although the inclusion of readily fermentable grains can reduce heat tolerance. The aim of these experiments was to investigate a chemical method for reducing the rate of fermentation of wheat and its effect on improving heat tolerance in sheep. In the first experiment, fermentation kinetics and buffered rumen fluid pH variation during in vitro incubation of corn, wheat, and 3% NaOH-treated wheat grains were compared. This experiment showed that corn and 3% NaOH-treated wheat had a slower (-23 and -22%, respectively; < 0.001) rate of gas production and elevated buffered rumen fluid pH ( < 0.001) compared with wheat. In the second experiment, 31 Merino × Poll Dorset wethers were housed in 2 climate-controlled rooms and were fed either corn grain plus forage (42.7% starch; were fed either corn grain plus forage (CD), wheat grain plus forage (WD) or 3 % NaOH-treated wheat plus forage (TWD) during 3 experimental periods: period 1 (P1), which consisted of 7 d of thermoneutral conditions (18 to 21°C and 40 to 50% relative humidity) and 1.7 times maintenance feed intake; period 2 (P2), which consisted of 7 d of HS (28 to 38°C and 30 to 50% relative humidity) and the same feed intake as in P1; and period 3 (P3), which consisted of 7 d of HS as in P2 and 2 times maintenance feed intake in a randomized control experiment. Water was offered ad libitum. The impact of HS was quantified by increases in rectal temperature, respiration rate (RR), and flank skin temperature (FT); variations in blood acid-base balance; and glucose, NEFA, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP-70) plasma concentrations. All physiological variables were elevated during HS, especially when wethers had greater feed intake (P3). Wethers fed CD had lower RR, rectal temperature, and FT than wethers fed WD ( < 0.001) and wethers fed TWD had lower RR and FT than wethers fed WD during HS ( < 0.05). There were reductions in blood CO, HCO3, and base excess concurrent with increases in blood partial pressure of O and pH during HS ( < 0.05). Heat stress reduced plasma NEFA and glucose concentrations whereas it increased prolactin ( < 0.05). Prolactin and HSP-70 plasma concentrations were greater for WD-fed wethers ( < 0.001) associated with Prolactin and HSP-70 plasma concentrations were greater for WD fed wethers (P < 0.001) during HS. These data indicate that the slow rate of rumen fermentation of CD and TWD can reduce the heat released during feed fermentation in the rumen, improving heat tolerance in sheep.

Abstract
This study validated the effect of gender (female, immunocastrated male; n = 50), electrical stimulation (none or 150 mA constant current for 30 s at 2 min post-slaughter) and ageing period (2 or 14 d) on the eating quality of pork roast and stir fry sourced from the loin (M. longissimus thoracis et lumborum) and silverside (M. biceps femoris) and steak from the loin only. Moisture infusion was applied to 2 d aged, non-stimulated primals as a positive control treatment. Neither gender nor ageing period influenced (P > 0.05) eating quality. Electrical stimulation and moisture infusion were each effective interventions in improving pork eating quality, but their effects were inconsistent between the five cuts evaluated. No interventions achieved the fail rate target of <10% for quality grade for all cuts, indicating that additional interventions are needed to enable industry to consistently deliver high quality pork.

Abstract
The Australian pork industry is strongly committed to assuring the integrity of its product, with substantial research investment made over the past ten years to develop and implement systems to assure the consistency and quality of fresh pork and to enable accurate tracing of unpackaged fresh pork back to property of origin using trace elemental profiling. These initiatives are pivotal to allow Australian pork of guaranteed eating quality to be successfully positioned as higher value products, across a range of international and domestic markets, whilst managing any threats of product substitution. This paper describes the current status of the development of a predictive eating quality model for Australian pork, utilizing eating quality datasets generated from recent Australian studies. The implementation of trace elemental profiling, by Physi-Trace™, to verify and defend provenance claims and support the supply of consistently high eating quality Australian pork to its customers, is also discussed.

This experiment investigated the metabolic response to a 2-dose epinephrine challenge of dairy cows undergoing an extended lactation. Twelve multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows that calved in late winter in a seasonally calving pasture-based dairying system were managed for a 670-d lactation by delaying rebreeding. In each of four 40-d experimental periods commencing at 73, 217, 422, and 520 (±9.1) d in milk (DIM), cows were offered a diet of perennial ryegrass (73 and 422 DIM) or pasture hay and silage (217 and 520 DIM), supplemented with 1 (CON; n = 6) or 6 kg of grain (GRN; n = 6) as a ration. Daily energy intake was approximately 160 and 215 MJ of metabolizable energy/cow for the CON and GRN treatments, respectively. At all other times, cows were managed as a single herd and grazed pasture supplemented with grain to an estimated daily total intake of 180 MJ of metabolizable energy/cow. Cows were fitted with a jugular catheter during the final week of each experimental period. Two doses of epinephrine (0.1 and 1.6 µg/kg of body weight) were infused via the catheter 2 h apart to each cow at approximately 100, 250, 460, and 560 DIM. Blood plasma concentrations of glucose and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) were measured before and after infusions. Cows in the GRN treatment had greater milk yield, milk fat and protein yields, and body weight than cows in the CON treatment. The maximum plasma glucose concentration was observed at 100 DIM for both the low and high doses of epinephrine. Thus, sensitivity and responsiveness to exogenous epinephrine were greater during early lactation, coinciding with increased priority of milk synthesis. Both the sensitivity and responsiveness to epinephrine decreased with decreasing milk yield, as measured by the acute appearance of NEFA in the plasma. Increased plasma glucose and NEFA clearance rates before 300 DIM indicated greater uptake of these substrates by the mammary gland for milk synthesis in early and mid lactation. These results support previous findings that major changes occur in terms of adipose tissue metabolism during extended lactations. Overall, sensitivity to epinephrine was not affected by diet, but responsiveness was greater in cows fed the GRN diet. The endocrine regulation of nutrient partitioning throughout traditional and extended lactations is complex, with many interactions between stage of lactation, diet, and milk yield potential.

Abstract
Random effects meta-regression techniques, analyzed using a restricted maximum likelihood (REML) approach, was used to determine the influence of various factors that may be experienced or imposed on pigs, carcases and pork on pork eating quality attributes and shear force of the M. longissimus dorsi (loin). This was done to inform the development of a pathway based eating quality system for pork. Estimated means of explanatory variables were obtained for those pathway factors where sufficient published studies met the criteria for inclusion in the analysis. Due to a lack of data for interactions between factors investigated, only single factors were included as fixed terms in the REML models. This analysis identified that moisture infusion (P < 0.001), ageing for more than 2 d post-slaughter (P = 0.006) and tenderstretching (P = 0.006) each resulted in significant improvements in tenderness. Cooking loins to an endpoint temperature of ≥ 80°C negatively impacted both tenderness (P = 0.022) and juiciness (P < 0.001) scores compared with 70 to 74°C. It was not possible to develop algorithms to reliably estimate the effects of multiple factors on pork eating quality attributes to a cuts-based level due to limited studies reporting data for treatment interactions.

Abstract
Gilt progeny (GP) are born and weaned lighter than sow progeny (SP) and have higher rates of mortality. This study aimed to quantify the performance and survival differences between GP and SP throughout the entire production cycle from birth to sale. Furthermore, the study looked at the effects of segregating GP and SP compared with commingling during rearing within common pens. It was hypothesized that GP would be lighter than SP at every age and have lower rates of survival accompanied by higher rates of medication, and that segregating GP and SP would improve the growth and survival of both groups. All progeny born to 109 gilts (parity 1) and 94 sows (parities 2 to 8) were allocated to 4 postweaning treatments at birth: GP separately penned, GP mixed with SP in a common pen (GM), SP separately penned, and SP mixed with GP in a common pen (SM), with littermates split among treatments. The GM and SM pigs were penned together after weaning. Individual live weight of all progeny was recorded at birth (birth weight [BWT]), weaning (28 d; weaning weight [WWT]), 10 wk of age (10-wk weight [10WT]), and sale (22-23 wk; sale weight [SWT]). Individual HCW, backfat depth, loin depth, and dressing percentage were measured at slaughter. All postweaning mortalities and medications were recorded. The GP had a lighter BWT ( = 0.032), WWT ( < 0.001), 10WT ( < 0.001), and SWT ( < 0.001) than SP as well as a lower HCW ( < 0.001) and dressing percentage ( = 0.012). Postweaning performance differences were mostly attributable to the lighter WWT of GP compared with that of SP when WWT was fitted as a covariate. The GP had a higher mortality in the immediate postweaning period (weaning to 10 wk of age; = 0.028) and from weaning to sale ( = 0.012) than SP, which was also attributable to lower WWT. The GP exhibited a higher incidence of mortality ( = 0.011) due to respiratory tract infection in the grower-finisher period, despite similar medication rates ( = 0.83). Segregation of GP and SP between pens presented no benefit in terms of growth and survival of both groups while requiring added labor and production considerations and, therefore, is not recommended. This study confirms that GP are lighter than SP, on average, at every stage of life from birth to slaughter and that their performance before weaning is an important determinant for whole-of-life performance.

Abstract
Female crossbred pigs were randomly allocated at 16weeks of age to one of three dietary treatments (A: corn and soybean meal; B: wheat and canola meal; C: wheat and sorghum) matched for digestible energy (13.6MJ DE/kg) and total lysine (0.93-0.95%) and fed for 4, 5 or 8weeks, respectively, prior to slaughter. Loin (M. longissimus thoracis et lumborum) and silverside (M. biceps femoris) were obtained from 20 pigs per dietary treatment group and prepared into steaks and roasts, respectively, for consumer evaluation with ageing treatments of 7 and 28days post-slaughter allocated within muscle. Neither dietary treatment/age at slaughter nor ageing treatment influenced sensory traits of either cut. Intramuscular fat levels were also not influenced by dietary treatment. Higher (P<0.001) fail rates for silverside roasts compared with loin steaks indicate that different interventions are needed at a cut level to optimise pork eating quality consistency and consumer expectations.

Abstract
During heat stress (HS), livestock reduce metabolic heat production by lowering activity and feed intake. Because this has obvious consequences for productivity, the aim of these experiments was to investigate nutritional methods for reducing digestive metabolic heat production, thereby allowing livestock more opportunity to dissipate excess heat. In the first experiment, the fermentation rates of corn and wheat grains were compared in an in vitro gas production system containing buffered rumen fluid. This experiment showed that corn had a slower (-15%; < 0.001) rate of gas production than wheat and no differences in total amount of gas production after 24 h of incubation. In the second experiment, we hypothesized that the lower rate of fermentation of corn would reduce metabolic heat load in wethers and, in turn, improve tolerance to HS. Twenty-two Merino × Poll Dorset wethers were housed in 2 climate-controlled rooms and were fed either corn grain plus forage (CD; 39% starch) or wheat grain plus forage (WD; 37% starch) during 3 experimental periods: period 1 (P1), which consisted of 7 d of thermoneutral conditions (18 to 21°C and 40 to 50% relative humidity [RH]) and restricted feed intake (1.3 times maintenance); period 2 (P2), which consisted of 7 d of HS (28 to 38°C and 30 to 50% RH) and restricted feed intake; and period 3 (P3), which consisted of 7 d of HS as in P2 with unrestricted feed intake (1.5 times maintenance) in a randomized control experiment. Water was offered ad libitum. The level of HS was quantified by increases in rectal temperature (RT), respiration rate (RR), and left and right flank skin temperature (LFT and RFT, respectively) and blood acid-base balance. Rectal temperature, RR, LFT, and RFT were elevated ( < 0.001) during HS, especially when wethers had unrestricted feed intake (P3). Wethers fed CD had lower RR, RT, LFT, and RFT ( < 0.001) than wethers fed WD, and this benefit was greatest during HS (P2 and P3). The reduction in RR with CD resulted in less CO exhalation (greater partial pressure of CO2) and greater HCO3 ( < 0.05) than with WD, indicating reduced efforts to dissipate heat by evaporative heat loss via panting. The greatest heat from fermentation was apparent in WD wethers, which had elevated LFT compared with RFT ( < 0.001). Crucially, this large difference was not observed with the CD wethers, indicating that the slow rate of fermentation of CD was expressed as low heat released during feed fermentation in the rumen. These data demonstrated that feeding CD may be a useful management strategy to reduce the impact of high environmental heat loads in sheep.

Abstract
Pigs immunized against gonadotropin-releasing factor (GnRF) have increased carcass fatness compared to entire males; however, the timing of this increase in fatness after the second immunization against GnRF has not been determined. An experiment was conducted to identify and compare the growth performance, body composition, and physiological changes in immunocastrated males (IC males) at different BW and feeding levels. A total of 64 pigs were used in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial experiment with the treatments being 1) sex (entire males or IC males), 2) initial BW (45.9 kg [light] or 78.3 kg [heavy]), and 3) feeding regime (2.5 times maintenance [restricted] or ad libitum). The pigs were individually housed, and the diets were fed for 4 wk after the second immunization against GnRF until slaughter at either 68.4 kg BW (light) or 105.8 kg BW (heavy). Immunocastrated males on a restricted feed intake had a lower ADG compared to entire males from d 15 to 28 and d 0 to 28 ( 0.011 and 0.011, respectively). Fat deposition was not affected by sex from d 0 to 14, but from d 15 to 28 IC males deposited 45 g/d more fat than entire males ( = 0.025). Immunocastrated male pigs fed ad libitum deposited 87 g/d more fat from d 15 to 28 than entire males fed ad libitum ( = 0.036). However, there was no difference in fat deposition between IC males and entire males when feed intake was restricted from d 15 to 28. Plasma urea nitrogen levels were greater in IC males compared to entire males from d 7 after the second immunization against GnRF ( 0.05 for d 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28). Plasma concentrations of IGF-1 were lower for IC males compared to entire males on d 3, 7, 10, and 28 ( 0.05 for all days). The following conclusions were made: 1) when pigs are immunized at a light BW (50 kg) and/or are on a restricted feed intake, they have a reduced propensity to deposit fat; however, the restriction in feed intake adversely affects growth rate. 2) The majority of fat deposition for males immunized at heavy BW (80 kg) occurs from d 15 to 28 after the second immunization against GnRF.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) disrupts redox balance and insulin-related metabolism. Supplementation with supranutritional amounts of selenium (Se) may enhance glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity and reduce oxidative stress, but may trigger insulin resistance. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of a short-term high Se supplementation on physiology, oxidative stress and insulin-related metabolism in heat-stressed pigs. Twenty-four gilts were fed either a control (0.20 ppm Se) or a high Se (1.0 ppm Se yeast, HiSe) diet for 2 weeks. Pigs were then housed in thermoneutral (20°C) or HS (35°C) conditions for 8 days. Blood samples were collected to study blood Se and oxidative stress markers. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was conducted on day 8 of thermal exposure. The HS conditions increased rectal temperature and respiration rate (both p < .001). The HiSe diet increased blood Se by 12% (p < .05) and ameliorated the increase in rectal temperature (p < .05). Heat stress increased oxidative stress as evidenced by a 48% increase in plasma advanced oxidized protein products (AOPPs; p < .05), which may be associated with the reductions in plasma biological antioxidant potential (BAP) and erythrocyte GPX activity (both p < .05). The HiSe diet did not alleviate the reduction in plasma BAP or increase in AOPPs observed during HS, although it tended to increase erythrocyte GPX activity by 13% (p = .068). Without affecting insulin, HS attenuated lipid mobilization, as evidenced by a lower fasting NEFA concentration (p < .05), which was not mitigated by the HiSe diet. The HiSe diet increased insulin AUC, suggesting it potentiated insulin resistance, although this only occurred under TN conditions (p = .066). In summary, HS induced oxidative stress and attenuated lipid mobilization in pigs. The short-term supranutritional Se supplementation alleviated hyperthermia, but did not protect against oxidative stress in heat-stressed pigs.

Abstract
Improving insulin sensitivity may reduce impacts of heat stress (HS) in pigs by facilitating heat dissipation. Chromium (Cr) has been reported to improve insulin sensitivity in pigs. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to investigate whether Cr supplementation can mitigate HS in growing pigs. Thirty-six gilts were randomly assigned to 2 diets containing 0 (control) or 400 ppb Cr. After 14 d the supplemented pigs were allocated to either 8 d thermoneutral (20°C constant; TN) or cyclic HS (35°C, 0900 h to 1700 h) conditions and continued their respective diet (n = 9 per group). Growth performance was recorded during the 14-d supplementation period. The physiological responses to HS were monitored by measuring respiration rate, rectal temperature, blood gas chemistry, and feed intake during thermal exposure. Kinetics of plasma glucose, insulin and NEFA were studied by intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) on d 8 of thermal treatment. Results showed Cr alleviated the HS-increased rectal temperature (P < 0.05) and respiration rate (P < 0.01) at 1300 h and 1600 h during thermal exposure. However, Cr did not mitigate the reduction in average daily feed intake which was reduced by 35% during HS or the HS-induced respiratory alkalosis. Chromium tended to increase average daily gain (0.86 vs. 0.95 kg, P = 0.070) during the 14-d supplementation under TN conditions before thermal exposure, which might be associated with the potential of Cr in improving overall insulin sensitivity, as evidenced by a reduced insulin resistance index calculated by Homeostatic Model Assessment (HOMA-IR; 0.65 vs. 0.51, P = 0.013) and a tendency of reduced fasting plasma insulin concentration (1.97 vs. 1.67 μU/mL, P = 0.094). Heat stress decreased the acute insulin releasing rate (P = 0.012) and consequently slowed glucose clearance rate (P = 0.035) during IVGTT. Besides, HS enlarged the values of area under the curve of NEFA during IVGTT (P < 0.01), indicating a reduced lipid mobilization. In conclusion, HS reduced insulin response to IVGTT. Chromium supplementation exhibited a potential in improving insulin sensitivity and mitigating HS symptoms in growing pigs.

Abstract
Dry matter intake and feeding behaviour were measured in grazing dairy cows fed partial mixed rations with (PMR+C) and without (PMR–C) canola meal. In spring (early lactation), 32 Holstein–Friesian dairy cows were offered two amounts of the two supplement treatments in a two × two factorial arrangement of treatments for 24 days. Amounts of supplement were low (8 kg DM/cow.day) versus high (14 kg DM/cow.day). The PMR–C ration comprised wheat grain (59.5%, DM basis), maize grain (18.9%) and lucerne hay (21.6%). The PMR+C ration was the same, except some wheat grain was substituted with canola meal (21.6%). Both rations were isoenergetic, with a grain to forage ratio of 78 : 22 (DM basis). All cows were offered a low pasture allowance of 10 kg DM/cow.day to ground level. Replacing some wheat in a ration with canola meal increased pasture and total eating time. Dry matter intake did not differ between PMR–C and PMR+C cows. The present experiment also demonstrated that altering the amount of supplement did not influence the increase in eating time that occurred as a result of the inclusion of canola meal. Increasing the amount of supplement reduced pasture intake as a result of a reduction in grazing time and grazing intensity.

Abstract
The growing Asian middle class, the proliferation of export markets and a more discerning domestic consumer base are creating new opportunities and challenges for the Australian pork industry. To fully capitalise on these opportunities and face these new challenges, the right questions need to be asked by the Australian pork industry. We need to know not only what our consumers want, but who our consumers are. The present paper aims to demonstrate that novel approaches to investigate consumer attitudes will be required, and it cannot be assumed that current productions systems, products and marketing strategies are optimal for the changing environment and the creation of new premium market opportunities. With new markets and new products come new consumers; identifying who those consumers are, the networks they operate within as food consumers, and what influences their purchasing decisions are the key to their adopting Australian pork as premium produce in a new global market.

Abstract
Grape marc consists of the skins, seeds and stems remaining after grapes have been pressed to make wine. Interest in grape marc for use as a dietary feed additive for ruminants has grown after recent research showed that inclusion of grape marc in the diet of dairy cows reduced their enteric methane (CH4) emissions. In the present research, in vitro fermentations were conducted on 20 diverse grape marcs to evaluate their potential as ruminant feed supplements and, in particular, mitigants of enteric CH4 emissions. The grape marcs, which were sourced from vineyards in south-eastern Australia, contained a range of red and white grape varieties with different proportions of skins, seeds and stalks, and had diverse chemical compositions. For each grape marc, four replicate samples, each of 1 g DM, were incubated in vitro with ruminal fluid. The volumes of total gas and CH4 produced after 48 h of incubation were determined. Total gas production ranged from 21.8 to 146.9 mL and CH4 production from 6.8 to 30.3 mL. White grape marcs produced more (P < 0.05) total gas (81.8 mL) than did red grape marcs (61.0 mL), but had a lower (P < 0.05) percentage of CH4 (25.3% and 30.3% of total gas). Grape marcs with a higher proportion of seeds produced less (P < 0.05) total gas than did the types composed of either skin or stalks; however, the seed types produced the greatest (P < 0.05) percentage of CH4 (49.8% of total gas). It is concluded that grape marcs differ greatly in their potential as mitigants of enteric CH4 emissions for ruminal production systems.

Abstract
Considerable investment has been made by the Australian pork industry over several decades, to address key factors that affect pork quality, so as to improve consumer acceptability of pork and pork products. These outcomes have been utilised to inform on-farm quality assurance programs, develop effective solutions to negate boar taint issues associated with the production of entire males, drive continuous improvement in animal management and encourage new technologies to be implemented in both the production and processing sectors of the Australian pork supply chain. Australian Pork Limited’s Strategic Plan 2015–20 is focused on maintaining profitable and sustainable growth in existing markets and developing strong foundations to support new opportunities, both in Australia and internationally. Guaranteeing that pork available for purchase is always consistently high in eating quality will support ongoing consumer demand for pork through increased consumption frequency. However, achieving this on an everyday basis presents industry with significant challenges due to the many complex interactions among the production, processing and post-slaughter factors experienced by pigs, carcasses and pork that can influence final product quality, either singularly or in combination. The present paper describes recent quantitative studies to determine the size and effect of pathway parameters on eating quality attributes of fresh pork and knowledge gaps identified. Outcomes of consumer sensory studies to inform the development of a non-prescriptive cuts-based eating quality system for pork and commercially validate particular pathway interventions are detailed. Through the implementation of validated pathway interventions to optimise pork eating quality, the overall industry objective is to reduce eating quality fail rates of different pork cuts to less than 10%.

Abstract
Betaine (BET), a natural, organic osmolyte, improves cellular efficiency by acting as a chaperone, refolding denatured proteins. To test if dietary BET reduced the effect of heat stress (HS) in lactating dairy cows, multiparous, lactating Holstein cows (n=24) were blocked by days in milk (101.4±8.6 d) and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 daily intakes of dietary BET: the control (CON) group received no BET, mid intake (MID) received 57mg of BET/kg of body weight, and high dose (HI) received 114mg of BET/kg of body weight. Cows were fed twice daily and BET was top-dressed at each feeding. Cows were milked 2 times/d and milk samples were taken daily for analysis. Milk components, yield, feed intake, and water intake records were taken daily. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were taken 3 times/d at 0600, 1400, and 1800h. Cows were housed in environmentally controlled rooms and were allowed acclimation for 7d at thermoneutral (TN) conditions with a mean temperature-humidity index of 56.6. Cows were then exposed to 7d of TN followed by 7d of HS represented by a temperature-humidity index of 71.5 for 14d. This was followed by a recovery period of 3d at TN. Dietary BET increased milk yield during the TN period. No differences were found between BET and CON in total milk production or milk composition during HS. The increase in water intake during HS was not as great for cows fed BET compared with controls. The cows on CON diets had higher p.m. respiration rate than both MID and HI BET during HS, but lower rectal temperature compared with BET. No difference was found in serum glucose during TN, but cows given HI had elevated glucose levels during HS compared with CON. No differences were found in serum insulin levels between CON and BET but an intake by environment interaction was present with insulin increasing in HI-treated lactating dairy cows during HS. The heat shock response [heat shock protein (HSP) 27 and HSP70] was upregulated in bovine mammary epithelial cells in vitro. Blood leukocyte HSP27 was downregulated at the HI dose under TN conditions and HSP70 was upregulated at the HI dose and this effect was increased by HS. No effect was seen with the MID dose with HSP27 or HSP70. The lack of effect of BET at MID may be associated with uptake across the gut. We conclude that BET increased milk production under TN conditions and was associated with reduced feed and water intake and slightly increased body temperatures during HS of cows fed BET. The effect of BET on milk production was lost during HS with HI BET, whereas serum glucose levels increased during HS.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of supranutritional dietary selenium and vitamin E (Vit E) to ameliorate the effect of heat stress (HS) on oxidative status and acid-base balance in sheep. Thirty-two Merino × Poll Dorset ewes were acclimated to indoor individual pen feeding of a pelleted control diet (0.24 g Se and 10 IU of Vit E/kg DM) for 1 wk. Sheep were then moved to metabolism cages in climatic chambers and randomly allocated to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design with the respective factors being dietary Se (0.24 and 1.20 mg/kg DM as Sel-Plex; Alltech, Australia), Vit E (10 and 100 IU/kg DM), and temperature for 2 wk. After 1 wk of acclimation in metabolic cages, 1 climatic chamber continued on thermoneutral (TN) conditions (18°C to 21°C and 40% to 50% relative humidity [RH]), and the other one was set to HS conditions (28°C to 40°C and 30% to 40% RH) for 1 wk. The sheep were then returned to individual pens and fed the control diet for 1 wk before being returned to the same diet as in the first period but a reversed thermal treatment for a further 2 wk. Physiological parameters were recorded 3 times daily, and blood samples were collected on d 1 and 7 of thermal treatment. Average respiration rate and rectal temperature of sheep were increased (P < 0.001) during HS; however, combined supranutritional supplementation of Se and Vit E reversed the effects of HS. Sheep given the high Se and high Vit E diet had a lower respiration rate (191 vs. 232 breaths/min; P = 0.012) and rectal temperature (40.33°C vs. 40.58°C; P = 0.039) under peak HS (1700 h) compared with those fed the low Se and low Vit E diet. Plasma reactive oxygen metabolites concentrations were reduced (P = 0.048) by 20%, whereas biological antioxidant potential was increased (P = 0.17) by 10% in sheep fed the high Se and high Vit E diet compared with those fed the low Se and low Vit E diet. Blood pH was elevated (P = 0.007) and bicarbonate was reduced (P = 0.049) under HS, and again, these effects were ameliorated by the high Se and high Vit E diet. Both white blood cell glutathione peroxidase gene expression and red blood cell lysate glutathione peroxidase activity were increased in sheep fed the high Se and high Vit E diet. These data suggest that supranutritional dietary Se or Vit E can reduce some of the negative effects of HS. However, the synergism between the 2 antioxidants improves their potential to ameliorate the impacts of HS in sheep.

Abstract
Variation in feeding behavior and milk production of grazing dairy cows fed a mixed ration was measured. Experiments were conducted in spring (early lactation) and autumn (late lactation) with 48 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. Pasture allowance (low vs. high) and amounts of supplement (low vs. high) were applied to determine the effect on variation among cows in feeding behavior and milk production. The experiments investigated 4 dietary treatments in a 2×2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Daily pasture allowances were 15kg of DM/cow per day (low) and 37kg of DM/cow per day (high; to ground level); and 12kg of DM/cow per day (low) and 31kg of DM/cow per day (high; to ground level), for the spring and autumn experiments, respectively. Supplements were offered at 6kg of DM/cow per day (low) and 14kg of DM/cow per day (high); and 6kg of DM/cow per day (low) and 12kg of DM/cow per day (high), for the spring and autumn experiments, respectively. There were 2groups of 6 cows per treatment. All treatments received a partial mixed ration, defined as a total mixed ration fed between periods of grazing that contained wheat grain, corn grain, alfalfa hay, and canola meal. The grain-to-forage ratio of the supplements was 78:22 (DM basis) in both spring and autumn. In both experiments, the pre-experimental period was 14d followed by a 10-d experimental period. The variation among cows within a group in feeding behavior was influenced by the amount of supplement but not the amount of pasture offered. The variation among cows in pasture eating time approximately doubled when the amount of supplement offered increased, indicating that to reduce the variability among cows, supplement feeding management strategies need to be considered. Increasing pasture allowance had no effect on pasture eating time although pasture intake increased as a result of increased grazing intensity compared with the low pasture allowance. However, increasing the amount of supplement in the partial mixed ration feeding system reduced pasture eating time by 51min/cow per day.

Abstract
A confined feeding study was conducted to compare the production and physiological effects of feeding three doses of wild-type perennial ryegrass alkaloids via whole seed to Merino sheep housed under thermoneutral conditions (21°C, 50% relative humidity). Eighteen Merino ewe weaners (16 months; initial bodyweight 47 ± 1.94 kg) were offered Nil, Low (50 µg/kg liveweight ergovaline, 22 µg/kg liveweight lolitrem B) or High (100 µg/kg liveweight ergovaline, 44 µg/kg liveweight lolitrem B) doses of alkaloids for 21 days. Dry matter intake tended (P = 0.072) to decrease in a linear manner with increasing dietary alkaloid concentration. Rectal temperature and respiration rate increased (P = 0.002 for both) in a linear manner with increasing dietary alkaloid concentration. Oxygen consumption increased linearly (P = 0.064) and quadratically (P = 0.015) with increasing alkaloid concentration, being highest in the Low dose and intermediate in the High dose group. Plasma prolactin decreased linearly (P = 0.002) with increasing dietary alkaloids. These data clearly show that animal production and efficiency are compromised when sheep consume perennial ryegrass alkaloids, even over a short period of time. This study indicates that a pyrogenic response can occur when alkaloids are consumed, even under thermoneutral conditions.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) and vitamin E are essential micronutrients for animal health and production. The major function of both Se and vitamin E is to prevent the oxidative damage of biological membranes and they can influence growth, reproduction, immune function, health, and product quality in ruminants. Both Se and vitamin E are important for maintaining low cellular and systemic concentrations of reactive oxygen species and lipid hydroperoxides, to ensure optimum cellular function. Discovery of various selenoproteins and vitamin E-responsive genes has contributed significantly to improving our understanding about multiple functions of Se and vitamin E. There is evidence that these functions extend beyond the classical antioxidant properties to immunomodulation and intracellular cell signalling and gene regulation. Research in recent years has also shown that supranutritional supplementation of Se and vitamin E is required to improve the performance of ruminants under certain stressful conditions such as heat stress and during transition period. Considering the growing awareness among consumers of the benefits of antioxidant-rich food, there is a great opportunity for the livestock industries to focus on producing antioxidant-enriched milk and meat products or functional foods. The present review focuses on the recent developments in understanding multiple functions of Se and vitamin E at the cellular and molecular level and the effects of supranutritional supplementation on ruminant performance. In addition, the paper also articulates the potential opportunities to produce functional foods enriched with antioxidants, and underlines the need for optimum supplementation of these micronutrients for efficient ruminant production.

Abstract
Thiazolidinediones (TZD) are synthetic orally active peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ ligands used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ gene plays an important role in regulating fat cell development, energy balance, and lipid metabolism in adipose and skeletal muscle tissue. There is interest in pharmacologic or nutritional means that may complement genetic techniques to improve growth and carcass composition of lambs and the major aim of the present study was to determine whether TZD impact on growth performance and meat quality of growing lambs. An initial study with four cross-bred lambs confirmed that rosiglitazone maleate is absorbed after oral dosing for 7 days. A second study was conducted with 30 cross-bred lambs to investigate the effects of sex (ewe vs wether) and dose of orally administered rosiglitazone maleate (0, 8 and 24 mg/day) for 55 days on growth performance, body composition, plasma metabolites and insulin and meat quality. Feed intake tended to increase linearly with dose of TZD (1521, 1816 and 1878 g/day for 0, 8 and 24 mg/day, P = 0.07) over the entire study, and particularly during the second half of the study (P < 0.05). There were both linear (P = 0.05) and quadratic (P = 0.04) responses in average daily gain to TZD (215, 270 and 261 g/day) with the quadratic response being most pronounced over the second half of the study (P = 0.004). As a result of the increased feed intake back fat (9.4, 11.1 and 13.5 mm, P < 0.001) and carcass fat (27.5%, 29.2% and 30.1%, P = 0.05) increased linearly with dose of TZD. However, there was no effect of TZD on internal fat depots. Plasma non-esterified acid concentrations increased linearly (0.37, 0.39 and 0.41 mM, P = 0.01) whereas plasma insulin concentrations (23.2, 26.9 and 20.9 mU/L, P = 0.05) and the homeostatic model assessment (6.82, 7.73 and 5.98, P = 0.05) exhibited quadratic responses to TZD. There were no significant effects of TZD on muscle pH, temperature or colour although muscle pH was higher at any temperature in ewes (+ 0.05 of a pH unit, P = 0.036) than in wethers. In conclusion, these data confirm that rosiglitazone maleate was rapidly absorbed from the digestive tract of growing ruminant lambs and was metabolically active. Oral TZD treatment appeared to mitigate against the inhibitory effect of carcass fatness on feed intake but the additional energy consumed was in turn deposited as fat.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic heat (thermal) stress and dietary antioxidant supplementation on the expression of heat shock proteins and inflammatory genes in the skeletal muscle of sheep. Twenty-four Merino × Poll Dorset crossbred ewes were allocated to either a control (10 IU vitamin E and 0.24 mg Se/kg DM) or high-antioxidant (VitE+Se; 100 IU vitamin E and 1.20 mg Se/kg DM) diet and were exposed to 2 thermal (temperature) treatments (thermoneutral [TN]: 18°C-21°C and 26%-30% relative humidity; heat stress [HS]: 28°C-40°C and 40%-50% relative humidity) for 1 wk. Physiological parameters were recorded daily, and muscle biopsies were conducted at the end of thermal treatments. Total RNA was extracted from muscle samples and reverse transcribed to cDNA for real-time PCR analysis. Respiration rates and rectal temperature were increased in response to HS (84.2 vs. 161 breaths per minute and 39.52°C vs. 40.06°C for TN and HS conditions, respectively; P < 0.001). There were interactions between dietary and thermal treatments, indicating that dietary antioxidant supplementation reduced respiration rate (P = 0.097) and rectal temperature (P = 0.086) of sheep during HS but not TN conditions. Skeletal muscle heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) mRNA abundance was increased by HS (1.3-fold; P < 0.050) but was not changed (P = 0.77) by dietary antioxidant supplementation. The expression of skeletal muscle heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA was increased (P < 0.001) 3.5-fold by HS and tended (P = 0.08) to be increased by dietary antioxidant supplementation. Although there were no main effects of diet (P = 0.42) or HS (P = 0.47) on skeletal muscle HSP90 mRNA expression, there was an interaction (P = 0.040) such that HSP90 mRNA expression was increased (P = 0.010) in antioxidant-supplemented sheep under HS compared to TN conditions. Skeletal muscle nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and tissue necrosis factor α (TNF-α) mRNA abundances were increased by exposure to heat (5.2-fold, P = 0.005 for NF-κB; 5.7-fold, P = 0.013 for TNF-α) ,but there was no main effect (P > 0.05) of dietary antioxidant supplementation. There was, however, an interaction between thermal and dietary treatments such that dietary antioxidant supplementation ameliorated the effect of HS on NF-κB and TNF-α mRNA expression. Taken together, these results indicate that high dietary antioxidants modulate skeletal muscle expression of heat shock proteins, proinflammatory cytokine, and NF-κB transcription, which may protect against HS in sheep.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of milk supplementation during lactation, over 1 wk after weaning, and oxytocin administration for the first 14 d of life on the pigs' response to weaning. Pigs from 20 litters were allocated to each of these 3 treatments in a randomized factorial design. Oxytocin was administered subcutaneously daily from 0 to 14 d of age at a rate of 10 I.U. per kg. The milk supplement consisted of a mixture of 25% skim milk powder offered either during lactation between 10 and 20 d of age or for the first week after weaning as a transitional diet along with dry pellets. Pigs were weaned at 21 d of age. Growth rate was measured from birth to slaughter at 140 d of age and feed intake of supplemental milk or feed from 10 to 56 d of age. Organ weights (heart, liver, stomach, and kidneys) and the gene expression of ghrelin, leptin, and glucagon-like peptides (glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucagon-like peptide-2) were measured in the stomach, ileum, and duodenum at 10, 21, and 28 d of age. Milk supplementation after weaning resulted in immediate feed intake and partially alleviated the depression in growth rate over the first 7 d postweaning (P < 0.001), but milk supplementation during lactation had no effects (P > 0.1). However, effects were only transient and disappeared once the milk liquid diet was removed. Neonatal oxytocin administration reduced weight loss over the first 2 d after weaning (P = 0.03), without affecting feed intake (P > 0.1), hence possibly reducing weaning stress. Seven days after weaning, oxytocin-treated pigs had greater stomach ghrelin and leptin expression (both P = 0.02), and pigs supplemented with milk after weaning had greater stomach leptin and glucagon-like peptide-2 expression (P = 0.02 and P = 0.05, respectively). Hence, neonatal oxytocin administration or postweaning milk supplementation are both effective means of enhancing gastric leptin expression and reducing weight loss at weaning, likely improving gut health during this critical period.

Abstract
As nitric oxide (NO) is postulated to be a mediator of the effects of pre-slaughter stress on meat quality the aims of this experiment were to investigate the effects of modulating NO pharmacologically on meat quality of sedentary lambs. As pharmacological NO donors are prohibitively expensive to use in the lamb model L-Arginine, the substrate for NO synthase (NOS) was infused into lambs and increased NO production by ~30%. In a 2 × 2 factorial design we infused either L-Arginine (500 mg/kg) or the NOS inhibitor L-N(G) nitroarginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME, 30 mg/kg) 190 min pre-slaughter and investigated meat quality in the Longissimus thoracis lumborum (LTL) or Semimembranosus (SM). The principal outcome of the experiment was that L-NAME inhibited proteolysis and reduced tenderness in the SM. These data indicate that events pre-slaughter that affect NO synthesis can influence meat tenderness, potentially via altered muscle metabolism or modulation of proteolytic enzymes.

Abstract
In pasture-based dairy systems, supplementary feeds are used to increase dry matter intake and milk production. Historically, supplementation involved the provision of the same amount of feed (usually a grain-based concentrate feed) to each cow in the herd during milking (i.e., flat-rate feeding). The increasing availability of computerized feeding and milk monitoring technology in milking parlors, however, has led to increased interest in the potential benefits of feeding individual cows (i.e., individualized or differential feeding) different amounts and types of supplements according to one or more parameters (e.g., breeding value for milk yield, current milk yield, days in milk, body condition score, reproduction status, parity). In this review, we consider the likely benefits of individualized supplementary feeding strategies for pasture-based dairy cows fed supplements in the bail during milking. A unique feature of our review compared with earlier publications is the focus on individualized feeding strategies under practical grazing management. Previous reviews focused primarily on research undertaken in situations where cows were offered ad libitum forage, whereas we consider the likely benefits of individualized supplementary feeding strategies under rotational grazing management, wherein pasture is often restricted to all or part of a herd. The review provides compelling evidence that between-cow differences in response to concentrate supplements support the concept of individualized supplementary feeding.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the different-sized particles of chromium (Cr) picolinate (CrPic) and dietary fat on growth performance, carcass traits and insulin sensitivity of finishing pigs. Ninety-six Large White × Landrace gilts were stratified on bodyweight, housed in pens of three pigs and then, on a pen basis, randomly allocated to eight treatment groups in a 2 × 4 factorial design for 6 weeks. The respective factors were dietary fat (2.2% or 5.7%) and dietary CrPic (0 mg/kg, 400 mg/kgnormal-size CrPic, 400 mg/kg 1-μm CrPic (μCrPic), or 400 mg/kg 100-nm CrPic (nCrPic)). Over the first 21 days, average daily gain (ADG) was increased by dietary CrPic (0.94 vs 1.01 kg/day, P = 0.021), although there was no difference (P = 0.17) between the CrPic particle sizes. High dietary fat also increased ADG over this period (0.96 vs 1.03 kg/day, P = 0.013). However, the responses to both dietary CrPic and fat diminished over time and so there was no effect of CrPic (P = 0.35) or fat (P = 0.93) on ADG over the full 42 days. Dietary CrPic increased carcass weight and muscle depth and decreased P2 backfat. Furthermore, dietary Cr decreased plasma insulin (7.66 vs 5.09 mU/L, P = 0.018) and the homeostatic model assessment (1.25 vs 0.82, P = 0.009), indicating an improvement in insulin sensitivity. In conclusion, dietary Cr can increase ADG and improve carcass traits and insulin sensitivity in lean pigs. There were few differences among particle sizes, possibly because the response to dietary CrPic may already be maximised at 400 mg/kg.
